Sea Wall Murals
Covering Sheringham, the Runtons, Holt and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and North Walsham Times
Last year the Sheringham Society funded a refresh of the sea front mural underneath the Two Lifeboats Pub.
This year the Society commissioned a re-fresh of the East Promenade sea wall mural. The refresh was undertaken by Colin Seal who was helped by David Barber. Colin, as usual, loved the interaction with people during the busy holiday season and getting children and others involved in painting a bit as they went by and David Barber brought his own creative and striking style to the re-fresh, including a painting of Neptune .
Due to the relatively poor state of the East Promenade wall, on most of the wall only the sea creatures have been re-painted leaving the background “faded under water”. Colin though, as ever, has used his love of fun to include a female diver and can of coca cola!
Peter Strudwick, Chairman of the Society said “Colin Seal (and David Barber) has done a fantastic job again in refreshing the sea wall mural. The wall is a popular place for people to sit whilst looking out to sea .Please go and have a look.”

Stay Well This Winter - get your flu vaccination GP Practices in North Norfolk and rural Broadland are urging patients to help themselves stay well this winter by booking in for a free NHS flu vaccination.
People with serious health conditions, adults over 65, some carers and healthy children between the age of 2 and 4 all qualify for one free from the NHS.
Pregnant women and children in primary school years one and two are also eligible. The call from local GP Practices comes just as the NHS prepares to launch a major new health campaign called Stay Well This Winter.
The very first message of this new campaign will be about flu:
“Don’t put it off. Take up the offer from your GP as soon as you can”

GPs and nurses at your local medical practice are geared up to vaccinate patients over the coming weeks. Many have arranged special flu vaccination sessions.
Jackie Schneider, nurse member of the Governing Body at NHS North Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Group and its Head of Patient Safety and Clinical Quality, said “Dedicated ‘flu clinics are run by almost all GP practices up and down the country. If you book a slot at a special clinic, you can ensure you get the vaccine early and have the maximum benefit through the autumn and winter months. We strongly urge everyone who meets the NHS eligibility criteria to ring their GP Practice and make sure they get vaccinated promptly.” The clinics – as experienced patients will know – are usually very busy and well co-ordinated affairs. Teams of doctors and nurses are on hand to vaccinate a patient every two minutes or so.
The flu jab for adults – and nasal sprays for children – can be a lifesaver. It is safe and it cannot give you flu, because it does not contain live viruses.
Flu is not like a bad cold, it is a debilitating condition which affects the whole body. It can increase the risk of developing more serious illnesses such as bronchitis and pneumonia, or can make existing conditions worse. Serious cases of flu can result in being admitted to hospital, and in some instances could be fatal.
Jon Cox, Consultant from Public Health Norfolk, said “As we age our immune systems become less effective, so it is important that patients over 65 take advantage of the flu jab. It’s also important that pregnant mums, people with underlying long-term health problems and young children have the vaccine because they are more vulnerable to serious illness if they catch flu.

“The vaccine is the best possible protection against the flu virus. Even if you have had the vaccination before, because the type of virus in circulation changes every year, it is important that you get the jab every winter.

Council completes hand over of local asset to North Norfolk Railway
North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is pleased to announce that Sheringham Tourist Information Centre (TIC) has been handed over to North Norfolk Railway (NNR).
The handover paves the way for a newly redeveloped TIC and toilet facilities and improved opening hours and has offered NNR the opportunity to shape how local services are run.
NNR submitted a Localism Act Expression of Interest to the Council to provide and manage the Sheringham Tourist Information Centre and the public toilets at Station Approach, Sheringham.
The transfer was dependent on a successful Coastal Communities Grant bid by the NNR for £450,000 for a wider development of the site at Sheringham, which was awarded in January 2015.
Following the handover, NNR intends to demolish the toilets at Station Approach together with the TIC and then rebuild a new shop, office,
TIC and toilet facility. NNR, following the signing of a service level agreement, will run the TIC and the toilets and has committed to re-opening the facilities in April 2016.
It is expected that the new TIC will be run by railway staff and will open throughout the year.
Temporary toilets have been installed on Station Approach car park and will be available for the duration of the project (subject to opening hours).
Cllr. Tom FitzPatrick, North Norfolk District Council Leader, said “Handing over the Tourist Information Centre and Station Approach toilets in Sheringham to North Norfolk Railway follows the successful transfer of Wells Tourist Information Centre to Wells Maltings Trust. Both transfers indicate how the Council is willing to work with local people and organisations to ensure important and well-used services and facilities continue to be provided in the future.”
Trevor Eady, General Manager for North Norfolk Railway, said “We welcome the
Bake Off inspires a coffee morning
While watching the Great British Bake Off and seeing the advert asking the public to hold a Macmillan Coffee Morning, Rupert Fox decided to hold an event at work.
He works at Crayford & Abbs in Bodham and the management kindly allowed him to organise the event and hold it in the showroom at their Bodham premises.
The event proved extremely successful and popular with both staff and visitors and a profit of £254.58 has been given to the North Norfolk Macmillan Cancer Support Group funds.
opportunity to enhance the facilities for both the North Norfolk Railway and Sheringham itself. Work will start immediately to ensure the new facilities, which will include a new shop for the Railway, will be available from April 2016. The project will also see the buffet on the station doubled in size to help provide better facilities for the growing number of passengers (2015 161,000).”

Shantymen 25th Anniversary Gig
During 2015 the Shantymen have been celebrating their 25th anniversary, having started in 1990. This year, as well as the other forty odd gigs in their programme they also planned to do three very special gigs, two in Sheringham and the last one at the Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre on 6 November.
Musical Director Brian Farrow said This will be our final celebratory gig of 2015 and we are really looking forward to it. To make it really special we have asked Keith Skipper if he will join us for the show. We have always admired Keith’s work and he will bring his own unique taste of Norfolk to this show, which we have called ‘The Silver Darlings’.
They are still planning the show details but Secretary Dick Grieve added “We propose to tell the story of the road we have travelled over the last 25 years and include a few well-placed anecdotes from our resident comedians and I know Keith will add his own splendid blend of humour”
The Shantymen are keen to demonstrate their thanks to the people of Norfolk who have supported them over the last 25 years and have come up with a novel way to show that.
Chairman Bob Hawkins said ‘We have decided to give all of the profits from the Pier show to four local charities, one of which is the RNLI with whom the Shantymen have always been closely linked. The other three, which must be registered Norfolk charities, will be picked at random on the night of the concert from those who have expressed a written interest. In order to be in with a chance, we are asking everyone to complete the form on our web site and send it to our secretary. He continued ‘This is your chance to be one of the four charity beneficiaries from the Silver Darlings Concert on Friday 6 November at The Pavilion Theatre, Cromer Pier’.
They also plan to make another CD late this year or early next, which will feature their favourite and most popular songs. Booking Secretary Chris Dolby said “The Shantymen are going to make a list of their twenty four favourite songs and will then choose the most popular ones for the CD. However we thought the public might wish to have an input into what’s on the new CD so we are inviting them to let us know their favourite songs which we have recorded.”
You will find a list of all of the songs they have recorded in the discography section of
Love for Leo
The August bank holiday weather was awful - it rained all day, so the Love for Leo tombola could not take place. Instead Moss and Robina decided to make it part of the 40s Weekend, which was fun!
We had a lot of support by people donating items for prizes and we were able to fill three long tables with over 100 excellent prizes. This was obviously an attraction as we made the wonderful sum of £300.
their web site www.shantymen.com and the Shantymen have said that if you have any favourites please let them know.
In summing up, Musical Director Brian Farrow said ‘This has been a wonderful year for us and this will be a very special show. But I would like to add some very specific thanks to all of the guys, some still with us, many who have left, but to all who travelled this road with us. We could not have done it without them.
As our pot of money grows, we will be able to make further useful donations to children in Norfolk who have cerebral palsy
We will have another tombola next year so any prizes would be gratefully received.
For any information please contact Moss on 01263 823637 or Robina on 01263 823588.
We would like to say a big thank you to all who donated prizes, those who bought tickets and to the very kind gentleman who risked life and limb by standing in the road before it was closed and used Moss's camera to take our photo.
The funds are rising steadily, Moss is donating from his talks and the sales of his books and Robina's home made preserves on sale at the All Natural Company shop in the High Street Sheringham get sold very quickly - the special jam at the moment is the blackberry and apple jam. Friends of Kelling Hospital
We are holding a Coffee Morning at The Feathers Hotel in Holt on Saturday 7 November from 10am until 12 noon.
We are a charity that raises money and receives donations to make life in the hospital more comfortable for the patients. To this end, we provide newspapers and other support items for the patients. Recently, because there was so little room for patients and families to sit and chat, we have funded the construction of a garden room where they can sit and chat in comfort. The Slater family, who had a member who was a senior doctor at Kelling Hospital for many years, recently held a sponsored cycle ride from Oxford to the hospital to raise funds towards palliative care. We would like to invite you to come to our coffee morning to meet our Trustees and Friends and to learn more about what we have done and what we are planning and perhaps become a supporter and Friend for the future. 8

It really is rocket science at Briston!
Once again the sky over Briston will be lit up on 5 November, courtesy of the local seafood retail business, the Norfolk Larder.
They will be 'doing their bit' raising money for a local good cause with yet another super Bonfire and Firework display. As well as a dazzling display of rockets and the like, there will be other entertainments aimed at the younger visitors, and as usual, delicious hot food and drinks will be available too! Dave Chambers, Margaret, his wife, and his staff provide this event each year as a way of thanking customers for their business throughout the year, and at the same time, the event raises funds for the Briston Day Care Centre, so everyone's a winner.
The huge bonfire will be lit at 6.30pm, and the display itself starts at 7pm. Entry for adults is just £1 per head, with accompanied children getting in free! Norfolk Larder is situated in Mill Road, Briston, NR24 2JF, and there is plenty of parking nearby.
If you need further information, phone The Norfolk Larder on 01263 862991.
This event is always very well supported and enjoyed by local families and visitors alike, so do come and join us!

SHERINGHAM & CROMER LIONS
On Saturday 10 October, Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club held another of their Race Nights at The Morley Club.
Before the first race, their Immediate Past Present Derick Bowler had the pleasure of presenting two cheques.
The first was a cheque for £1050, which was presented to Julie Lythgoe, who received it on behalf of the Norfolk & Norwich Association for the Blind, and the second cheque for £500 was presented to James Edghill, who received it in on behalf of The East Anglian Air Ambulance. The monies donated were raised over the past year by the Club holding street collections, having their tombola stall at various events and by holding fundraising evenings such as Race Nights and Quiz Nights. Following the presentations, the Club carried on with the Race Night and, by the end of the evening, they had made a profit of just under £300.
Club members would like to thank all those that attended and hope they enjoyed the evening. Club members would also like to thank the Morley Club for allowing them to hold the event and Hughes, Cromer for the loan of the large television and DVD player.
On the evening of 29 September, Sheringham & Cromer Lions held a Charity Fashion Show courtesy of M & Co, Cromer where the Club made £90 for charity.
100% of the money raised at Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club fundraising events are donated to charity, nothing is deducted for administration. All administration costs are met by Club members. This year the Club is raising money for the North Norfolk Branch of The Multiple Sclerosis Society and/or local Lions causes.
If you would like to know more about the Lions please ask a Club member next time you see him or her out collecting, or contact Lion Brian on 01263 821276 or email brihaz@btinternet.com.
Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club
It is rare to watch television news without there being reference to the latest graphic account of natural disasters, civil wars, starving and homeless families or such like in many parts of our world. Frequently these occur in some of the most remote and inhospitable areas where communications are disrupted and contact is cut off.
At its October meeting at the Links Hotel West Runton, Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club heard how this inaccessibility is being bridged by the Mission Aviation Fellowship. The speaker, David Balfour, explained how the link between giving and receiving aid is met by this dedicated Christian organisation which provides aviation, communication and learning technology services to more than a thousand humanitarian agencies as well as isolated missionaries and indigenous villagers in the world’s most remote areas. Many of these services involve flying into steep, short or otherwise difficult runways and the organisation is also equipped with amphibious aircraft capable of reaching flooded areas such as Bangladesh.
Formed after World War Two the organisation has a fleet of over 130 aircraft delivering food, aid and medical assistance, and plays a key role in disaster response including vital help following the Nepal earthquakes and the Indian tsunami’s impact in Sumatra.
This was an interesting and fact-filled talk and Mr Balfour was warmly thanked on behalf of the Club by Ken Macnish, himself a former RAF navigator.
The Club welcomed two new members and if YOU are interested in joining us, retired or nearly retired and particularly if you are relatively new to the area and would like to meet a very friendly group of men for lunch, please contact our lunch secretary, Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or visit our website, www.candsprobus.club
Our next meeting is on November 3rd when the speaker, PC Barrie Creswell, will be dealing with much more local issues in talking to us about ‘ Police work in N. Norfolk’. If you are unable to join us for that, we are holding an informal get-together for coffee (other drinks and food available!) at the Hole-in-One adjacent to The Links at 10.30 am on November 10th. Multi-Faceted Popular Performer Returns to Sheringham
‘An Evening with Richard Digance’ sees the multi-talented artist make a return visit to the intimate setting of Sheringham Little Theatre next month.
Digance is a rare performer in that he is respected by comedians for his original material, and by musicians for being an accomplished performer/guitarist. His loyal following confirms his wide appeal, from the younger generation attracted by both his guitar playing and the fact he has inspired many modern-day performers, to the super-loyal who have followed him since the time he had his own ITV series and even further when he started out in folk clubs.
His evergreen career has been acknowledged through numerous awards within both the music and entertainment industries, from a BAFTA Nomination as a TV entertainer to a Gold Award from the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters. He has supported Steve Martin in the USA and Robin Williams at The London Palladium and is included in

The Virgin Anthology of Songwriters for his important contribution to British comedy song writing. When presented with the Gold Award from the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters, he was described as someone who for half a century has travelled the world with just a guitar and an immense collection of stories gathered through his own experiences.
He has survived all trends with his one-man show, his summer festival appearances in the UK, the United States, Canada and Dubai, his cruise work and television appearances. He is both an accomplished musician, rated by many as one of Britain's greatest acoustic guitarists, inspired by his good friend Ralph McTell, and an entertainer who many younger comedians, including Ross Noble, claim as one of their major influences. On his own ITV Saturday-night show Richard has played guitar with Queen's Brian May, The Moody Blues, Status Quo, Chris de Burgh, Juan Martin, Marc Cohn and Elkie Brooks.
Having been rather impressed by them at this year’s ‘Folk on the Pier’ festival in Cromer, Richard has invited Suffolk’s very own up and coming song writing duo, the Broadside Boys, to open the show for him at the Sheringham theatre.

BLOOMING AWARDS
Sheringham in Bloom held its nnual Awards Evening last month at St Andrews Church Hall. Awards were handed out to the winners of the town flower display competitions held in July and this was followed by a buffet and then the AGM for members.
FREE VALUATION
Chairman Joan Thame, gave a quick run down of all the events that Sheringham in Bloom organised during the year, and thanked all the sponsors and volunteers for their help, especially those who Best Flower Display at a Guest House turn out in all weathers for the award winner with Mayor David Gooch two monthly beach cleans that make such a difference to our beaches.
The awards were presented by Sheringham Mayor, David Gooch, and Bob Wilkinson of Sheringham Horticultural Society, to many businesses in the town as well as private gardens, old folks homes and amenities such as the Health Centre. Bob Brewster of the Crown Inn Bob Brewster did especially well winning the Best Overall flower display at a Public House, and runner up for best hanging basket.
Bob said that on behalf of many of those in business in the town he would like to thank all the volunteers at SiB who do sterling work each year on all the summer and spring displays and other planting schemes around the town.

WILL GILES, THE EXOTIC GARDEN, NORWICH
Members who have visited the Exotic Garden in Norwich or heard Will Giles speak when he came to Sheringham, will have received news of his death with great sorrow. He died on 2 September, having first been diagnosed with cancer in 2013. The statement released on his death says that he dealt with the news of his illness in his own private way and was determined to relish every last minute of his life and enjoyed relatively good health until earlier this year when, after a spell in hospital, it was discovered that his treatment was no longer effective. Will enjoyed working in his garden for as long as his health allowed, creating a new green wall and designing the planting season for this season.
He will be missed by all of us who were inspired by his enthusiasm for unusual plants. Will described his garden as a ‘stage set’. To enhance the effect he built a colonial-style balcony at first floor level across the front of the house. Covered in Vitis coignetiae and Begonias it evoked rum punches on the sun-dappled verandah of some Caribbean plantation house. He was not particularly fussy about what ranked as an exotic. It just had to look different and be able to endure the Norwich climate.
The garden is now closed and its future is uncertain but Will Giles showed us all that gardening should be fun and we should be bold and try growing unusual plants to give our own gardens that touch of the exotic. Bob Wilkinson Sheringham Independent 426 October 24th 2015

Cromer Walkers Are Welcome
News & Festival Events
Cromer Walkers Are Welcome are a small but busy team aiming to make Cromer a first class destination for walkers. Cromer is at the hub of several long distance paths, and with excellent rail and bus services, it is the perfect place to leave the car behind, stay for a few days, enjoy the friendly local atmosphere and experience the superb coastal scenery.
It has been a busy year so far, just some of our ongoing projects include walkers information boards around town, window stickers for walker friendly businesses and accommodation providers, supporting the Nook Hospice charity walkers, reporting footpath & littering problems with resultant NNDC action, activities at the Crab & Lobster Festival, Cromer Carnival, Coast Festival and North East Norfolk Walking Festival and Cromer walking film.
We have benefited from excellent help and support from North Norfolk Information
Centre staff who host our display stand with free walkers information packs, more than 1200 gone so far!
Also available is our delightful little Cromer Sheringham walkers passport, packed full of local information, and at only £1 a perfect souvenir/ stocking filler.

Older People’s Day 2015
Fun and Finger Food were the words on everyone’s lips at Sheringham Community centre in October. Age was again proven to be just a number as everyone at Age Concern North Norfolk helped celebrate Older People’s Day. Activities, cake and song and dance were enjoyed by an attendance of nearly a 100 people, of various ages.
The event was free to attend and there were information stands to help allow people access to, and have knowledge of, local services that can help them in later life. These stands included Ben’s Workforce, North Norfolk Community Transport, Age Concern North Norfolk Day Centre and the North Norfolk District Council’s Care and Repair Team. As well as this there was plenty of advice on hand in the form of The Older People’s Forum, Age UK Norfolk, a Community Support Officer from the Police and the Coordinator of the scheme Be Ready for It. A volunteer for North Norfolk Stories was also on hand to introduce, and to encourage contributors, to their Oral History project, which takes audio recordings of memories from people who have lived and worked in the area so they can put them towards an exhibition starting in the New Year.
It was an inspiring event to be a part of and to see that a part of our society all too easily overlooked, and dismissed, had a voice of their own. All who attended were as strong and full of life, with a drive to succeed and determination to live life to the full, as they were (in some cases) 80 years previously - putting many of the younger generations to shame
(especially on the dance floor) and proving once again that age need not be a barrier to a happy later life when given the support, encouragement and understanding of their younger peers. A further aim of the event was to help highlight the isolation and loneliness that has been an increasing part of living longer and the ways in which we can, together, combat that. Our overall aim, ideally, would be to also reach those people from rural areas who could not otherwise access such events and local services.
Organisations such as the Sheringham library and our Age Concern North Norfolk’s own Computer Support Group are two such schemes that aim to help lessen that isolation and general anxiety and they were both well attended during the event.
Phoenix offering suport (and sweets) and even a chance for a hand or foot massage, which, not surprisingly, was extremely popular, with Erica, who also kindly signposted the session onto a local bereavement support group at the Salvation Army in Sheringham.
Age Concern North Norfolk would like to say a big thank you to everyone who attended, including the local organisations who came with their information stands as well as all the wonderful volunteers who helped make the teas and cakes and sold raffle tickets on the day. Over £100 was raised in various guises throughout for good causes.
Age Concern North Norfolk Befriending scheme, funded by the National Lottery, also had many requests for a volunteer to pay them, or a loved one, a visit. There was a lot of interest in volunteering If you would like to find out as a befriender, where more about any of the above, we arrange for a including how to become a volunteer to visit an elderly person in their own befriender please call Age Concern North home, whether it be for a chat or just a nice Norfolk on 01263 823126 cuppa. We are always on the lookout for New Volunteers (Much Needed) across the whole of North Norfolk to help reduce loneliness amongst the elderly and if you are interested in learning more then we would We offer a range of legal services love to hear from across North and West Norfolk. you, please just call 01263 823126 for Trust our specialists to give you the more information.

New life for the Perrott brothers
Back in 2003 at just 19 years old, Matthew founded his business ‘Matthew Perrott Carpet Cleaning.’ The business quickly grew based on local accountability, exceptional service and great results. Matthew was able to provide employment as the business built up and in 2006 Thomas came on board. He became experienced in all roles of the business and was a great asset. After Matthew scaled down the business to make room for his new family in 2009, Thomas went to work in the local Sheringham branch Post Office until the opportunity arose for him to become a full partner in the business. In 2012 ‘The Perrott Brothers’ was formed. Since then the business has seen significant growth with the addition of two new vans and new members of staff (Luke, Jamie, Vicky and Chloe). Alongside this, the Perrott brothers introduced a new form of carpet cleaning which provides even greater cleaning results and faster drying times.
Bidding a fond farewell! Matthew has held a strong Christian faith for many years and recently an opportunity to attend a course has opened up. He has taken this opportunity to spend the next year in full time study. Therefore, Matthew has decided to step down as a director of 'The Perrott Brothers Ltd'. Thomas will now be taking the lead of what has become a thriving local business.
"I would like to thank all of my customers and the local community for your support over the last 12 years. It has been a real pleasure serving and getting to know so many of you. I am very proud of the business and all it has achieved so far. I look forward to seeing it grow under Tom's leadership. The last twelve months have probably been my most challenging which has motivated me to move in a different direction, I now look forward to a new phase, where I will be exploring my deeply held beliefs." (Matthew, October 2015)
The company is putting together a leaving book for Matthew and we are welcoming our customers to write down any happy memories and/or experiences you have shared with Matthew over the years. Please feel free to either send these into Unit 29, Weybourne Road Industrial Estate, Weybourne Road, Sheringham, NR26 8AF, or by email to enquiries@newlifecleaningservices.co.uk
Thomas is now directing the company with the help of his lovely wife Vicky. With the recent changes 'The Perrott Brothers Ltd' is having a change of name to New Life Cleaning Ltd, the same services as before but with two new additions. 16

New Life Cleaning Ltd Two New Services
“Times of change could be intimidating, but I have gained a great deal of knowledge and experience working alongside Matthew over the years and know that if properly managed, they become the wind in the sail for the next adventure. I look forward to the challenge of driving the business forward. We have a new name for the business ‘New Life Cleaning Ltd’ and also two new services that we will be providing; a general house cleaning service and recommending and working alongside Hannah Ghoorahoo who provides an exceptional curtain making service. We will of course continue to bring you a professional, reliable and friendly service.” (Thomas, October 2015)

Following on from their very successful sell out summer production, Sheringham Players are rehearsing hard for their autumn production of ‘And Evermore Shall Be So’, a humorous murder mystery by Norman Robbins.
Taking the title from the traditional folk song ‘Green Grow the Rushes Oh’, this play, directed by Greg Pope, explores the events surrounding a murder that took place four years previously in the sleepy village of Athleston near Norwich.
Saturday Family Advice Mornings (available by appointment only)
The Point, 1 Augusta Street, Sheringham NR26 8LA If you’re thinking of separating, have a dispute with your ‘‘ex’’ over your children, or just want some family legal advice why not come along to one of our free family advice mornings for a chat? It’s the ideal opportunity to meet our specialist family law solicitors to talk through your situation and find out how we can help.
To book an appointment, please contact Neale Grearson on:
01263 823398 ng@clapham-collinge.co.uk
It takes local gossip, Sheila Pashley, to realise how strangely the song lyrics seem to fit with the circumstances, where the action focuses on the repercussions that can be felt where there is “something wrong with the village” … “a sense of evil about it”, where gossiping villagers, pillars of the community and some very shady characters all have their secrets to hide.
All the clues are in the play, but will you be able to sort the truth from the gossip and find your way through the twists and turns to work out the final scene?
The play runs from Thursday 19 – Saturday 21 November, 7.30pm at Sheringham Little Theatre and tickets are available now from the theatre box office.
Superstar retires
Some people take it easy when they reach the age of 78 years, but not Jean Brown of Bodham. She decided that she would offer her time to work in The Salvation Army's Charity shop and has done so faithfully, for twelve years until her health didn't allow her to continue.
Customers loved her and she loved working in the shop and interacting with customers. Not only did Jean work at the Charity Shop but she helped to raise money for different Army projects at the "now famous Super Sales". RESCUE WOODEN BOATS Lucy Lavers trips…
Dunkirk Little Ship and former lifeboat Lucy Lavers has been giving trips afloat in Wells-next-the-Sea during the summer, following her successful return trip to Dunkirk75 years on.
Around 225 people have been afloat in her, with over 50 children, including some from Fakenham Academy who have been studying Lucy Lavers. People described the trips as ‘informative, memorable, evocative, history alive, exhilarating, fulfilling and nostalgic’.
Lucy Lavers will be coming out of the water for winter maintenance at Stiffkey in November and trips should start again at Easter (as always, subject to weather). Trip dates will be on the website and notices.
DATES FOR YOUR DIARIES - The Maritime Heritage visitor centre at Stiffkey will close at the end of October and re-open at the beginning of March (Saturdays and Sundays 10 – 4). BUT we will be open from time to time for special events: The first is a special weekend on 28 & 29 November when, as well as the displays, artefacts and films of Lucy Lavers story and plenty on fishing heritage, there will be a small display of Jack Cox paintings and plenty of special offers in the shop for your Christmas shopping! Do come along and bring your friends!
We now have two DVDs of Lucy Lavers – one of her history and restoration and the second of her return trip to Dunkirk this May. We will be showing these, dates to be announced, and they are for sale in the shop.
GROUP BOOKINGS - School groups, adult groups and societies – somewhere different to hold your meetings, perhaps with a Maritime Heritage tour and talk thrown in? Groups are warmly invited to use our flexible and well-equipped Education Room. Do get in touch.
If you like messing about with boats or in boatyards or are interested in our local maritime heritage, why not talk to us about being an occasional volunteer at the Visitor Centre? Do give us a call. 07920 760238 www.rescuewoodenboats.com; info@rescuewoodenboats.com
Norman Lamb speaks to Paston students about mental health
North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb says he wants Britain to be a world leader in providing care and support for those dealing with mental health issues.
Speaking to students at Paston Sixth Form College in North Walsham, Mr Lamb said "It was great to have the opportunity to talk about the importance of investment in mental health services. It is brilliant that the students wanted to raise this. The moral and the economic case for investment in mental health is overwhelming. It is morally wrong and economically stupid Norman Lamb to neglect mental health. It is estimated that speaking at Paston mental ill health costs the economy up to College last month £100bn a year. The impact on families is incalculable. I want this country to lead the world in understanding the importance of giving people speedy access to care and support and in accepting the case for equality for those suffering mental ill health.
Norman Lamb calls on District Council to offer low-cost energy deal to North Norfolk residents
Norman Lamb is urging North Norfolk District Council to help bring about real savings for local residents on their energy bills.
Recent media coverage has revealed that a number of councils across the country are now offering gas and electricity to the public – in a direct challenge to the big six energy companies. Norman Lamb is keen for North Norfolk District Council to get in on the act.
The savings are made possible by local councils using their buying power to negotiate competitive arrangements with energy companies, and it is estimated that savings of £250 per year can be made on a household bill.
One such deal, negotiated by Southend Council, also includes a guarantee that 33% of electricity will come from ‘green’ sources. They are also able to offer a 100% green option for customers who are happy to pay a little bit more.
Commenting, Norman Lamb said ‘It would be really brilliant if North Norfolk District Council could adopt this innovative approach being taken by a number of councils around the country. I am conscious that the potential savings on offer are quite significant. Many households could really do with a reduction in their energy bills of this sort.’
Commenting, Eric Seward (Liberal Democrat District Councillor) said ‘This is certainly something that the District Council should be looking at. I know that Norman has encouraged the Chief Executive of the Council to follow the lead of these pioneering councils. The Liberal Democrat group are absolutely in favour of the Council helping to reduce people’s energy bills and particularly on using green energy sources. We will continue to make the case to the Conservative administration that they should learn from other progressive councils and do something which could clearly benefit a great number of North Norfolk residents.’
Norman Lamb is also running a survey to find out how many people might be interested in such a scheme if it were to be offered by the District Council. To make your voice heard go to normanlamb.org.uk/energydeal

North Norfolk Photographic Society
The 2015-2016 Season got into its stride for the North Norfolk Photographic Society on 7 October with the first set of club competitions. The rules have changed this year, and beginners or those with less confidence have the opportunity to enter their pictures in a ‘Novice’ section without intimidation from the more experienced and established members.
The first ever winner of the first ever Novice print contest was Rob Palethorpe whose wet stone footpath full of reflections and with just two walkers’ legs ‘Walking in the Rain’ was a
deserving winner. Advanced entries were in two competitions, the first having a set subject ‘Simplicity’. The winning print, ‘Simply Stilt’ by Paul Richards showed a solitary bird against a background that blended from yellow to very pale.
The second competition was ‘Open’ - no set title and was won by a vivid picture of a stunt motorcyclist at Cromer Carnival jumping through a hoop of fire. This was by Mike Coles.
in his own right and well known for his individual style of judging. It is admirable that judges are willing to travel to and from Holt to assess these photographs - Jim had a drive home to Peterborough after the meeting finished at around 10pm.
Meetings of Norfolk the North Photographic Society are held on the first and third Wednesday of each month from 7.30 pm in the Holt Community Centre. For further details please contact the club Secretary, Judith Wells at secretary.nnps@gmail.com.
The judge was Jim Hartje, a very successful photographer
Norfolk artist donates one of his paintings to the East Anglian Children Hospice Love Art appeal
Peter Herring of East Anglian Children's Hospice (EACH) recently visited North Walsham artist Jamie Cooper to pick up a painting for the charities Love Art appeal.
The appeal is being run as a competition by EACH to promote and raise funds for the Nook, which is a support complex planned to be built in five acres of idyllic woodland near Framlingham Pigot, just south of Norwich.
As well as the competition, EACH are asking local artists to donate artwork to the appeal. It was this call-to-action to which Jamie responded. The competition runs until 1 November and artists can find further information on the website at www.each.org.uk/the-nook/events/details/loveart-competition.
Jamie Cooper opened his gallery/studio at Alby Craft Centre earlier this month. He said 'When I saw the appeal was running I thought that I had a painting I could spare. I have previously taken part in three dragon boat races to raise money for EACH and organised and submitted a team when I used to work at EAGIT Ltd. (East Anglian Group Industrial Training). It's a charity that seems to get things done and I am pleased to be able to help’.

J’s WEDDING CARS
Surround your day with elegance and romance on your special day. Arrive in a beautiful authentic vintage car painted in ivory and black.
Needless to say, for the volunteers who man the lifeboat crews, time is important. It must take many practice sessions to be able to get 'the kit' fully on in one and a half minutes!
At our October talk, Mr. Nick Grice spoke to us about some of the training involved in answering calls for help at sea. The training is done at Poole in Dorset through the RNLI, in an indoor pool - how to survive an overturned lifeboat, made to allow air pockets, must be able to do figure eights, in the lifeboat on the water forward and backward without touching the barriers as well as training offshore.
There is also a simulator where you sit in front of a screen and the seat moves as if you are on the sea moving with the waves and very realistic, must be able to work as a team as well as an individual and learn many life skills, such as navigation.

Mr. Grice became a volunteer on the lifeboats after buying an ice cream at the seaside and enquiring about a display - not the usual method of the mantle being passed down through generations of family and fishermen with tales of callouts and rescues. Nick himself served for 12 years and is now a RNLI trainer using his experience to carry on the tradition to the next generation. He wanted us to know it costs £200 million to run the RNLI around the UK and if we stop giving, it would only take seven months to run out of money.
The talk was informative, as are many of our talks, but also inspirational.
Going to hear the Sheringham Shantymen at Cromer Pier on 6 November would be an enjoyable way to contribute to the RNLI. Here's hoping it is a sellout! Loraine Greer Sheringham Independent 426 October 24th 2015

To Eat or Not to Eat?
When it comes to fungi, whether you think it is a mushroom or a toadstool, can you eat it?
The overwhelming answer is - unless you are absolutely sure that you know what it is, then don’t! Get your mushrooms from the greengrocer.
Dr Tony Leech (he prefers just Tony) spoke to Holt and District Probus Club on 1 October about fungi. Tony is the Norfolk Fungus Recorder and also the present Chairman of the North Norfolk Local Group of the Norfolk Wildlife Trust. For many years he was a teacher of biology at Gresham’s School in Holt.
The talk started with a summary of some of the mostly wrong guides to whether a fungus is edible - such as if you can peel it or if an animal has eaten it - both not true. And then a few words about this country’s most dangerous fungus, the Death Cap. With a greenish top, white stem and gills and a large bulbous base,

if you eat just a bit of one of these your liver is going to fail after a couple of weeks and death is more than likely.
Another dangerous mushroom is the Destroying Angel good name!

Rachael’s Walk for Friends
About With Friends’ member Rachael Phillips did a 10 mile walk around Cromer and the Runtons to raise almost £200 for the charity she attends four days each week. The sponsored walk was arranged almost entirely by Rachael and was not her first, as she has done the same thing for other charities in the past.
Rachael joined the About With Friends’ Workskills team last year and was working one day a week in the Community Café in Tucker Street, Cromer. However, she has been doing so well that recently she was able to increase her days to four. Rachael now works three days in the café and one in the Production unit on Middlebrook Way.
On her day off Rachael organised this sponsored walk which was two laps of a course that followed the coastal path out of Cromer into East Runton then looped out round Incleboro Fields to West Runton before turning back to Cromer. Rachael was seen off from the charity’s Holt Road headquarters by the Youth Advisory Board who were meeting there, and met about four hours later by the About With Friends’ adult social group who were in the café prior to visiting the cinema.
Development Manager Steve Smith walked with her and said “Rachael was ready for another lap but
I needed a cuppa. It’s marvellous that Rachael has done this walk but also great that she took on so much of the work involved and got all her own sponsorship. We are all very proud of her”.
The money will be used to buy special equipment for the charity.
Fitness is for all (not just women)

Print Show with H.J. Jackson Showcase, Book Signing, and Demonstration Saturday 24 to Saturday 31 October at Gallery Plus, Wells-next-the-Sea
H.J. Jackson – highly collected and hugely popular Norfolk print artist - celebrates the release of his new book Afloat and Ashore with a showcase exhibition at Gallery Plus in Wells-next-the-Sea. When H.J. Jackson produced his first handprinted linocut in his last year at school, he had no way of knowing that over 60 years later he would still be printmaking. This small single-colour print of a galleon in full sail was instrumental in helping H.J. Jackson – John to his friends – to obtain a place at the Norwich School of Art the following year. It was also directly responsible for him pursuing linocutting as a craft as part of the National Diploma in Graphic Design. It was while at the School of Art that John became interested in coastal themes, stimulated by visits to Sheringham, Cromer and to the fishwharf at Great Yarmouth during the annual visits by the Scottish Fishing Fleet. By the end of the 1950s, however, his interest was taken up with the closure of the local Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway, where his father, grandfather, and other family members had all worked and the clearance of large areas of Victorian Norwich.
On leaving Art School, John lost the use of the print-room equipment and although he could purchase tools, lino and ink, he realised he would have to dispense with the services of a printing
press. After experimenting, he finally settled on a ‘tobacco tin’ as the ideal burnishing tool – a method he still employs today. After working for over 30 years in marketing and publicity, printmaking during evenings and weekends, John was able to pursue linocutting ‘full time’ in 1995.
Now a Senior Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers and a Member of the Society of Wood Engravers, H.J. Jackson has perfected his craft. Working from photographic reference, John produces a drawing to the size of the proposed print. He then plans the number of lino blocks needed, some printing more than one colour. The drawing is photocopied onto tracing paper, reversed and transferred using carbon onto the lino. With drawing ink, he identifies the areas to be retained before cutting using only two tools: a V tool and a small gauge. The different blocks are printed using oil based inks and pin-hole registration. The printing is carried out entirely by hand burnishing using the tobacco tin.
The declining fishing industry features strongly in John’s work, and he likes his boats to look as if they have been to sea. The multiple layers of ink result in a ‘treacly’ appearance, which helps to gives them the look of working vessels.
To mark the release of his new book ‘Afloat and Ashore’, H.J. Jackson will be exhibiting a showcase of his recent linocuts, including his much-loved images of Norfolk boats, at Gallery Plus, Wells-next-the-Sea.
Dear Margaret,
On Friday 9 October, together with my wife and several other councillors, I attended a concert at St Peters Church given by The Kidderminster Male Choir in support of the Gina Holmes Memorial Fund. The concert was well attended and thoroughly enjoyed by the audience as was evident by the applause. We were very lucky indeed to have had this brilliant group fit Sheringham into their busy Norfolk Tour schedule.
The next evening we attended the 'Lights Up' concert at Sheringham Little Theatre, given by local amateurs, to raise funds to provide additional lighting for the town at Christmas. The programme was very varied with something to suit all tastes and for several of the performers it was the first time that they had appeared on stage - not an easy thing to do in a full theatre. I hope the length of the prolonged applause showed the cast how much their efforts were appreciated. Collective THANKS to all who took part or helped in any way whatsoever, but particular thanks have to go to Paul Starling who was the main driving force behind the event. Thank you also to all individuals and businesses who contributed to the auction of promises on the Sunday.
Sheringham has got talent and some wonderful volunteers. Thank you all. David Gooch, Mayor of Sheringham
Sheringham Independent 426 October 24th 2015
The exhibition, which will also include work by other Gallery Plus print artists, opens with an all-day preview on Saturday 24 October – all welcome to join us for a glass of Prosecco and continues daily until Saturday 31 October. Open Monday-Saturday 10am-5pm, plus Sunday 25 October 11am-4pm.
John will be in attendance at the preview to sign copies of his book and will be available to chat to about his work and history in the industry. He will also be demonstrating his linocutting techniques during two sessions - morning and afternoon - on the preview day.
