WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS? SOLICITORS?
“It’s a common misconception that a larger firm is better.”
I am Clare Mayell and I run Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor, qualified Family Mediator and Collaborative solicitor.
As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. The common misconception is that a larger local firm or city firm is better but this is incorrect. A client just pays more.
When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I am one of the few solicitors that offffers a free first appointment so that clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision.
I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.
“I would say to any potential client to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.
Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 01263 0 1263 8 823465 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk

Holt Probus Club - Mind the Jaguar!
Imogen White does not only mind jaguars, but also a couple of hundred other animals from guinea pigs to pumas, flamingos to macaws, spider monkeys to tapirs and even a 20 foot long anaconda.
Imogen is Head Keeper and Manager at Amazona Zoo in Cromer and told Holt and District Probus Club about her life and her job. She has a passion for animals and especially those from South America. It was a dream come true when in 2008 she was offered a job as a keeper at the zoo, then just at the formative stage.
Having progressed to Head Keeper and now Manager, Imogen lives at the zoo, where regulations require someone in attendance 24/7 - and most of the time that is Imogen.
Members were told how the animals are cared for - periodic vet examinations, heated accommodation, regular meals and clean cages are just a part of it, but it all goes to explain why the animals live so much longer than they would in the wild.

Our most recent meeting was held at St. Andrews Methodist Church and our talk was about the history of The Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band.
Mrs Jane Bussey was the speaker and brought along many group photos of the band over the years. Also included was a brief look at some of the actual musical instruments, their names and sounds.
On 29 October 2016, The Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band will celebrate 60 years as a band with a performance at St. Peters Church, Sheringham. The year was 1956 when two bands merged and were originally called the Cromer and Sheringham Silver Band with Henry Grice as Bandmaster from 1956 to 1984.
The two bands were The Sheringham Temperance Band and The Cromer Boys Band who played together for the first time at Cromer Town Hall in 1954 in aid of the Henry Blogg Memorial Fund. When the Cromer band was short of members Christmas 1955, the Sheringham band filled in the ranks to help with events. In 1956, Henry Grice pioneered the merger between bands and was the leader until retirement in 1984.
The current band is still going strong with rehearsals Thursday evenings 7.45pm at Upper Sheringham Village Hall and events next year include Hog Roasts to Last Night of the Proms. As you can see, the band shares a proud history and name with Cromer. The band is involved throughout North Norfolk playing a variety of songs as a traditional brass band, not just horned instruments but also percussion. Catch up with them on their website www.cromerandsheringhambrassband.com/

Sheringham Shantymen Charity Donations
Following their very successful Silver Darlings concert with guest performer Keith Skipper at Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre on Friday 6th November, the Shantymen handed over £2,800 to representatives of four charities on Saturday 14th November at the Tyneside club in Sheringham.
Secretary Dick Grieve said, ‘We decided to give all of the profits from the Pier show to three local Norfolk based charities and the fourth share to the RNLI with whom we have been closely linked since we started 25 years ago. The £2,800 is split equally between four charities, three of whom were picked at random from the hat on the night of the gig. Three of the charities are; About with Friends, F.A.I.T.H. Animal Rescue and The Friends of Sheringham Woodfields School.
The Shantymen have performed almost forty gigs this year with many of them in support of local charities and institutions. They have supported the RNLI since they started over twenty five years ago and have the letters R N L I incorporated into their badge. They will be making another CD in the New Year and have been inviting audiences to tell them their favourite songs to incorporate in the new CD.
Musical Director Brian Farrow added; ‘This has been a terrific year for us and we have enjoyed it immensely. The people of Norfolk have supported us in every venture and we knew we had to show our appreciation of their support not just for this year but for over the last twenty five years; mind you, the next twenty five will be interesting!

Politics, business, church, civic society, sport, and arts come together to back equality for mental health
An open letter calling for equality between physical and mental health is the centerpiece of a new campaign in advance of the government spending round.
In a matter of days, over two hundred top names from all walks of life signed up to the all party campaign, launched by Lib Dem former mental health minister Norman Lamb, Time to Change ambassador and former Labour government communications director Alastair Campbell, and former Conservative Cabinet minister Andrew Mitchell.
All three have had their own or family mental health issues and said they have been overwhelmed by how quickly support has gathered for this latest call for more to be done to address mental illness in the UK. In addition to other political figures who have backed the call, among them the Prime Minister’s former advisor Steve Hilton, and nine former Tory and Labour health secretaries, the first signatories include senior figures from:
• BUSINESS AND EMPLOYMENT– including the IOD, TUC, as well as individuals like Sir Tom Hunter, Sir Martin Sorrell, Lord Richard Rogers, Martin Gilbert and Delia Smith. • FAITH LEADERS, including The Most Revd Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury, Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis and Dr Shuja Shafi of the Muslim Council of Britain. • CULTURE AND ARTS – among them Richard Curtis, Danny Boyle, Annie Lennox, Mumford and Sons, Jamal Edwards, Jimmy McGovern, Graham Norton, Emma Thompson, Frankie Bridge from the Saturdays, Steve Coogan,
Caitlin Moran, Michael Morpurgo, Louis Theroux and Frank Skinner. • SPORT – including the League Managers’ Association, the Professional Cricketers’ Association, the Professional Footballers’ Association, the Rugby League State of Mind campaign, along with individuals such as Gordon Strachan, Sam Allardyce and Alan Pardew from football, Olympians Sir Steve Redgrave and Dame Kelly Holmes, Kevin Sinfield from rugby league, Henry Paul dual-code rugby player, Marcus Trescothick, Graeme Fowler and Mike Brearley. • MILITARY – including General Lord Richards, Sir Peter Wall and Falklands hero Simon Weston. • CIVIL SOCIETY, EDUCATION AND MEDICINE – including former Chief Medical Officer Sir Liam Donaldson, Classicist Mary Beard, the National Federation of Women’s Institutes, and medical royal colleges.
The open letter calls on the government to address the historic inequality between mental and physical health. It highlights just ten of the major concerns over inadequate mental health care, including the lack of access to treatment, long waiting times, inadequate crisis care, use of police cells and the shocking 20 year gap in life expectancy between those with mental health problems and the rest of the population.
Norman Lamb said “People with mental health problems have always been seen as second class citizens. It's an historic injustice which has to end. The moral and the economic case is overwhelming. It is changing, but so much more needs
to be done and we need the investment now.”
Alastair Campbell said “This is an issue whose time has come. The range of people now giving their active backing to a cause that used to be so taboo nobody would talk about indicates that if we can keep up the momentum, a tipping point can come.” Andrew Mitchell said “This is a campaign which transcends party boundaries. We all know people with mental health problems and it is time they had the same levels of understanding, support and treatment as people with physical health problems. We believe this will lead to long term savings for the economy.” Ruby Wax OBE, who has enthusiastically championed the campaign, said 'I am delighted to be part of this campaign for better mental health care. I think we are reaching a tipping point and this is clear from how readily so many people are joining us to support this campaign.'

Be part of Norfolk Open Studios 2016
“I love to hear how each artist develops their ideas and concepts and relish the opportunity to purchase not only beautiful creations, but something with meaning. It is the highlight of my summer!” visitor comment, June 2015
Calling all Norfolk artists! Applications are now open to take part in one of the most successful Open Studios schemes in the country.
Hundreds of artists across the region take part in Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios each year, inviting the public into their private studios to reveal where and how they work. The event attracts thousands of visitors and this year an estimated 26,000 people visited studios across the county. Artists have the opportunity to promote their work and meet their audience, and visitors see artwork as it happens, away from traditional gallery spaces.
This year 458 artists participated across 248 venues, and artists came together to create 17 Art Trails in various areas across Norfolk, allowing the visitor to enjoy a number of studios all in one day. Art demonstrations, private views, workshops and talks also make up this well-loved event.
For many of the artists who take part it is not just about making artwork sales. Artists comment that it helps them to feel part of their local artist community and the scheme helps
raise the profile of Norfolk artists. West Norfolk artist Karen Wadham, a painter who opened her studio in Great Massingham as part of the scheme this year, said that as well as selling paintings and prints, she “gained valuable feedback from visitors and hopefully more people will be aware of my style and output as a painter”.
Norwich based company Wex Photographic will be supporting the scheme again in 2016. Their Events Manager Emma van Deventer
NNOS artist Stephen Parry at work in his North Norfolk studio
said, “We are delighted to be sponsoring Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios once more this year, reflecting our long-term commitment to supporting local arts programmes. The ethos
01263 820006 Unit 3F, Glaven Road Holt, Norfolk, NR25 6ES info@marshall-hi.co.uk www.marshall-hi.co.uk
of Open Studios is very much in line with our own values as a photographic company and we look forward to helping celebrate and promote artistic talent in Norfolk.”
Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios 2016 will take place between 28 May and 12 June 2016. Artists wanting to take part can apply online at nnopenstudios.org.uk. The cost for inclusion in the scheme is £100 for individual artists and £280 for groups of artists and includes a listing in the Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios brochure with a print run of 35,000. Artists will also receive a listing on the Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios website, posters and postcards to publicise their involvement and the opportunity to take part in the high profile Central Taster Exhibition at The Forum in Norwich in April 2016, one of the largest annual art exhibitions held at The Forum.
The deadline for 2016 applications is Friday 4 December 2015.
For more information please visit www.nnopenstudios.org.uk, email nnopenstudios@nnfestival.org.uk or call Ros Dixon on 01603 877762.

New ownership for Doodle Pots ceramic cafĂŠ in Holt
In mid-November the paint-your-own pottery studio on New Street in Holt changed hands. Rachel Parker established the business 13 years ago, creating a fun, friendly and vibrant environment for both children and adults to paint unique items of pottery.
Rachel on the left and Caroline on the right
Caroline O’Leary, the new owner, has lived in Sheringham for most of her life and worked at the studio during her time at university, catching the pottery bug! Caroline jumped at the chance to take over Doodle Pots and continue the business into the future. Talking about the studio, Caroline said “It is such a unique shop, allowing customers to design their own ceramic kitchenware, decorations and trinkets. I can’t wait to introduce my own ideas into the business, whilst maintaining
the level of service our customers expect.
The shop offers a wide range of blank pottery and all the facilities needed to create your own masterpiece. Artistic ability is not essential, with lots of handy tricks, tips and ideas to create beautiful keepsakes. It’s simple, choose what you would like to paint, spend a hour or two painting your item, then leave it at the shop to be glazed and fired. Usually pots are ready within a few days. The shop will continue as normal under Caroline’s new management, but a number of new ideas, designs and offers will be introduced.
In the build up to Christmas the shop will be bursting with baubles and other decorations for around the home. Whether you want to capture a little ones hand or foot print on a decoration, create your own festive designed pottery or buy readymade gifts, Doodle Pots is the place to come.
St Andrew's Ladies Association
At our last meeting, we listened to Lucy who told us all about the Nook Appeal, and how the three |hospices, at Quidenham, Milton and the Treehouse, provide care and support to families in Cambridge, Essex, Norfolk and Sussex, who are bereaved of a child, as well as babies and children with life threatening conditions up to the age of 18.
Care referrals can be made by anyone - family or care professionals. They rely heavily on volunteers as they receive no Government funding and they need to raise ÂŁ10million for the new building, which will be in Framlingham Earl. It is hoped that building work will start in 2017 but at least 70% of the money has to be available before work can begin - at present the Nook Appeal has raised ÂŁ1m - so they need every penny for this big project, which will be very modern and provide the very latest equipment for the children - such a worthwhile cause which touched all our hearts.
Our last meeting before Christmas is on 24 November at 7.30pm when we will listen to Mrs Tricia Brooks telling us ‘Stories of a Mayor’. We look forward to our Christmas Lunch on 8 December at the Burlington Hotel 12.30pm for 1pm and meanwhile we wish all our members and their families a happy and peaceful Christmas.
We will recommence meetings on 12 January 2016 when Maureen Winslade will talk about prison letter writing worldwide.
Plans are being made to give the shop a refresh in the New Year, so watch this space!
Join us on 25 November for our special Holt Lights Christmas Bauble Offer – take a break from the street activities and paint a bauble for half the normal price! With simple designs for the whole family, keepsakes can be made within minutes. Please book to avoid disappointment.

Spooky Night at The Wheatsheaf Bedecked in Halloween dressing, the Wheatsheaf at West Beckham had a really fun night laid on for everyone. And many of their regulars got into the spirit of the night with some fancy dress almost de rigeur.
Mein hosts Stephen and Daniella like to get creative and this Halloween, the pub and restaurant could not have looked creepier and was complemented by a terrorising menu that included witch’s fingers with blood and guts dip, frogs’ legs, Jack-o-Lantern risotto, Pasta Afraid-o and I-scream! But the best was the baked pumpkin and white chocolate cheese cake.
Nearly a year on from when they took over the pub, it was fitting that a special night was so well supported as, prior to that, the pub, although it had historically been a popular, well known venue, had fallen on hard times recently and had been underfunded. Hence the need to renovate the outdoor areas, reinstate the children’s play area, refit the toilets adding a provision for a disabled toilet and baby changing facilities, and generally bringing back to life the business through dedication and tender loving care.
Within five months of taking the reins in West Beckham they were awarded a certificate of excellence from Trip Advisor, and anyone who has eaten or visited since their arrival will know why, from the warm and friendly welcome afforded to everyone by Daniella and her lovely team, and the freshly prepared, quality, locally sourced and value for money food available.
In fact the Pork Loin in Calvados sauce served with Caramelised Apple Rings has been so popular that Stephen has received many proposals of marriage (one of which was from a gentleman!) and many guests often ask Daniella if they could take her husband home with them, much to her amusement!
Daniella’s philosophy is: “if life gives you lemons, add gin and tonic. She adds: at the Wheatsheaf, we have both! Her aim is to infuse this friendly little English Country pub with humour. All of The Wheatsheaf’s advertisements are whimsical and jokes are displayed all around the pub which is a great ice breaker and makes the customers immediately feel at home.
As part of the August Rush series of events held at the Wheatsheaf, Stephen and Daniella were keen to ensure that local charities could also benefit. Capitalising on the large numbers attending, they operated a raffle with prizes that included meals for two, bottles of bubbly and a number of football team shirts to name but a few. The raffle raised the best part of £100 and it was donated to a local charity shop in Sheringham, who were pleasantly surprised as well as grateful as they had no idea of the endeavour.
Every other month, The Wheatsheaf teams up with Clic Sargent and organizes a charity fund raising race night (in fact there is one happening this November 20th), where a giant screen is displayed and recordings of previously run races (horses, dogs and even pigs!) are selected randomly by the attendees. There is a tote for placing £1.00 bets and you can even win prizes for being an owner, trainer or jockey. The last race night held at the Wheatsheaf raised approximately £400.00 and a great night was had by all. There is a fabulous six course Christmas day menu available so if you haven’t already made your arrangements for Christmas Day, hurry up as places are rapidly filling.
But it doesn’t stop there; the second floor of this beautiful building is currently being remodelled to comprise 5 en-suite B&B rooms with beautiful furniture, modern facilities and full amenities. They expect the B&B to be launched before the end of the year and in conjunction with Foodie Bouquet shabby chic tearoom which will service the breakfast buffet and morning and afternoon teas.

North Norfolk Shows it Has Got Talent Talent Competition GRAND FINAL brought Cromer Pier Alive
On Thursday night 30 October, Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre was brought alive by the 10 finalists in North Norfolk's biggest talent competition.
The theatre was packed with supporters of the performers, many of whom had been following the competition since the first heat at the end of the summer. Based on the well-known show format, the audience knew what to expect and they weren't disappointed – it was a truly memorable event.
All the acts in the Grand Final had already been through the heats held across North Norfolk during the late summer, and the semi-finals held at Davenport's Magic Kingdom in October, so the high quality of all the performers was already known.
In the first half of the final all 10 acts were given three minutes to impress the judges, with compere Joe Ballard, from Arts North Norfolk, encouraging the judges to offer insightful comments to help the acts prepare for their performance in the second half. This advice was taken on board and all the acts 'upped their game' after the interval making the final selection of a winner harder for the judges. At the end of the show there could only be one winner.
The duo Angelo Bernal and Ryan Major performing as GELO were given the M&A Partners trophy. Their performances ‘Bring Him Home’ from the musical Les Misérables and ‘Let it Go’ from the movie Frozen, really impressed the judges.
They have been given an

immediate opportunity by David Mackay, one of the judges, to perform in the show ‘The Elvis Years’ on 31 October showing the power of the talent competition.
Second prize went to Jack Goodacre who was accompanied on the night by Perry McCabe and Tim Goodacre. Jack was the youngest performer on the night and quickly grabbed the hearts of much of the audience with his performances.
Third prize was given to Olivia Watson, supported on the acoustic guitar by Rob Bindley. The judges commended Olivia for her performance of ‘On My Own’ from Les Misérables.
North Norfolk's Great Talent, #NNGT, was organised by the Coast
Arts Festival in conjunction with the Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre, Arts North Norfolk and Art is Medicine. The #NNGT Trophy was created by Annie Lloyd – Art is Medicine - sponsored by M&A Partners in Cromer. The four judges were David Mackay, Anna Mudeka, Roy Davenport and Annie Lloyd.
The 10 acts in the #NNGT Grand Final were Winner: Gelo – Male Vocalist Duo (Angelo Bernal and Ryan Major), 2nd Jack Goodacre – Guitar and Vocals with Tom and Perry supporting, 3rd Olivia Watson – Vocalist Accompanied by guitarist Rob Bindley, Dylan Wilson – Stand up Comedian, Lost Talent – dancers from Marlene’s School of Dance, Elena Ioannou – Vocals with Keyboard, Tofs – Paul Cooper and Myke Joyce, Acoustic Guitars and vocal, Daniella Homer – Vocalist and Into The Crowd – Girl Group, Vocalists with Keyboard (Josie Weller, Megan Howlett, Nyomi Brady and Lydia Gibbs) and Christina Winters – Vocalist. North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
We have had nine kittens in from the feral colony mentioned before but have now been advised there are a further two to be caught. Catching the adults is ongoing but has not been helped by the fact that when previous ones were caught they did not have their ears tipped, which is the normal procedure, but instead had some fur taken from their tails, which has grown back again. Consequently, several have been trapped again and have had to undergo an unnecessary operation. The tail clipping was done by a different vet and is not the accepted practice for dealing with feral cats, for obvious reasons. One of the joys of being a volunteer is being involved in caring for the cats and kittens while they are with us. Seeing frightened cats gaining confidence and learning to trust their carers gives us great pleasure and although we do get attached to them all, it is nice to know that they will be living in a house and getting the attention they deserve. A new home, where they can share a lap, a chair or even watch the television and enjoy the company of their new family. One of the biggest benefits is helping to care for the kittens. While some are born in care or arrive when a few days old, others can be several weeks old when they join us. Seeing the very young ones open their eyes and
The Need for
then starting to explore the world outside their bed, never ceases to bring a smile to our faces. Once they become more mobile, watching them finding and using a litter tray (with no help from us). You honestly do not need to train a kitten to use a litter tray as they do this instinctively, which Cassandra, Electra and Achilles, makes you realise three of the many kittens in care how wonderful nature is. Then, as they get older, seeing them playing and learning how to hunt. To watch a small kitten growling at its litter mates to make sure they do not come too close as they have caught a cat mint sack and do not want to share, always causes amusement. They are not kittens for long, so it is a privilege we enjoy on a regular basis and one of the perks of having to clean the pens on a cold, wet and windy day.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
Microchipping
Each week we see cats and dogs that are lost or have escaped from home. Some, sadly, have been involved in road traffic accidents. Thanks to the majority of our clients having already microchipped their pets, they usually get reunited. Imagine though, if your pet went missing and it didn’t have a microchip…… the outcome could be very different.
Microchipping is a permanent form of identification for your pet, not only will it prevent your pet from becoming lost and ending up in rehoming centres because the owners cannot be traced, it will also help to prevent theft of animals. • • • • • •
Microchips are easily placed via a needle into the scruff of the neck No need for anaesthetic or sedation Painless – no aftercare required Permanent – one microchip should last the lifetime of your pet Microchips are about the size of grain of rice Cats can be chipped too, but it is not a legal requirement.
From 6th April 2016 it will become law that all dogs have a microchip by 8 weeks of age and are registered on an approved database. Non-compliance may result in a fine of up to £500. You will also be required to keep your contact details up to date on the database. Non-compliance may again result in a fine of up to £500. It will still be a legal requirement for your dog to wear a collar and tag when out in a public place.
The tag must state the name and address of the owner, ideally with a contact number.

How does a long distance lorry driver, who travelled up and down the country delivering anything from washing machines to fruit, end up working in fabric.
Steve was driving along the road one day when a sign appeared ‘Low Bridge Ahead.’ Before he knew it, the bridge was right ahead of him and he got wedged under the bridge. Cars backed up and the police finally arrived to see that the lorry was not going anywhere, forwards or backwards, and needed some serious equipment to cut it out from under the bridge.
Samaritans Purse Shoebox Appeal
Once again Christmas is approaching fast and it is a time when small groups of volunteers gather together to think of others.
In an outbuilding in Aylsham, we are gathering shoe boxes full of sweets, toys and basic essentials to be sent to poor and vulnerable children in Eastern Europe, Africa and for the last two years, Syrian refugee children.
Operation Christmas Child has been supplying gifts since 1970 to bring a smile to children at Christmas.

Inquisitive people got out of their cars to see what has happened and why they are not going anywhere and one very irate driver walked up to Steve, put his hands on his hips and said ‘got stuck, huh?’ Steve, who has a great sense of humour replied “no, I was delivering this bridge and ran out of gas!”
If you would like to fill a shoebox and would like to know more, please look at www.samaritans-purse.org.uk/ what-we-do/operation-christmas-child These can be done as individuals, families or as a group.
Thank you for bringing a smile to a child’s face at Christmas. Contact details are Jo Masters on 01263 513458.
He got the sack, and decided that there has to be more to life than living in a lorry.
So where does the fabric come in? Well, his sister and friend were in the early stages of starting Tuliptree Designs and asked him to help with the ‘heavy work’. He did a great job, made an OK cuppa and picked up all things ‘fabric’ very quickly, so was asked to stay. He is a big hit with the quilting ladies, who love it that he takes an interest in what they are doing and he even suggests colours and fabrics that they may not have.

At 15.48 hrs HM Coastguard tasked Sheringham Lifeboat to proceed east about one mile to beneath Beeston Hill where a man had fallen on the low level apron of the seawall and fractured his ankle and was unable to stand or walk. This is a very remote location and there is no vehicular access. The tide was coming in quite quickly and the Coastguard and Paramedic teams on site requested that the Lifeboat be used to evacuate the casualty to a safer position in the centre of town where he could be safely attended. The casualty was strapped into the Lifeboat stretcher and carried through the surf to the lifeboat. He was then taken to the west Sheringham Fishermen’s beach where he was safely taken ashore and attended by the paramedics before being taken to hospital. SKIP TURNS UP VOLUME WITH BOOK NUMBER 39
Cromer writer, broadcaster and entertainer Keith Skipper is ready to test his mardling and joined-up writing skills!
His new book, number 39 off his homely Norfolk production line, forms an affectionate salute to packed years on the local scene as he dips into his memory bag and photograph albums. Signing sessions have been arranged at The Atrium in North Walsham on Saturday November, from 10am until 3pm, and at Jarrold’s book department in their Cromer store on Saturday 5 December from 11am until 1pm.
Keith Skipper’s Norfolk Scrapbook is shot through with his customary wit and humour – but there also some more serious items, including verses written by people he admires. Pictures of Skip’s colourful career abound along with a series of old postcard scenes of Norfolk villages and poignant images of old farming days.
The volume also includes various posters, programmes and other memorabilia closely connected with invitations to hold forth at all manner of occasions since finding his feet at cricket dinners in the 1960s. “In some respects, this is my way of finding a permanent home for old friends I simply can’t live without.”
The book, another collaboration with Peter Stibbons of Poppyland Publishing based in Cromer (www.poppyland.co.uk) and costs £9.95 in local bookshops. 22

Lucy Lavers trips.....
Dunkirk Little Ship and former lifeboat Lucy Lavers has been giving trips afloat in Wells-next-the-Sea during the summer, following her successful return trip to Dunkirk 75 years on. Around 225 people have been afloat in her, with over 50 children, including some from Fakenham Academy who have been studying Lucy Lavers. People described the trips as ‘informative, memorable, evocative, history alive, exhilarating, fulfilling and nostalgic’. Lucy Lavers will be coming out of the water for winter maintenance at Stiffkey in November and trips should start again at Easter (as always, subject to weather). Trip dates will be on the website and notices. Dates for your diaries…. The Maritime Heritage visitor centre at Stiffkey will close at the end of October and re-open at the beginning of March (Saturdays and Sundays 10 – 4). BUT we will be open from time to time for special events: The first is a special weekend on 28 & 29 November when, as well as the displays, artefacts and films of Lucy Lavers story and plenty on fishing heritage, there will be a small display of Jack Cox paintings and plenty of special offers in the shop for your Christmas shopping! Do come along and bring your friends!

restoration and the second of her return trip to Dunkirk this May. We will be showing these, dates to be announced, and they are for sale in the shop. Group bookings….. School groups, adult groups and societies – somewhere different to hold your meetings, perhaps with a Maritime Heritage tour and talk thrown in? Groups are warmly invited to use our flexible and well-equipped Education Room. Do get in touch. If you like messing about with boats or in boatyards or are interested in our local maritime heritage, why not talk to us about being an occasional volunteer at the Visitor Centre?

Landmark Supreme Court Decision on Divorce Settlements
By Neale Grearson, Head of Family Department at Clapham & Collinge SoliciThe decision of the Supreme Court on 14th October in the case of Alison Sharland and Varsha Gohil has opened the floodgates for retrospective reassessments of divorce settlements. They have also highlighted the need for honesty in financial disclosure during divorce settlement negotiations. Both Alison Sharland and Varsha Gohil felt that they had been badly treated by their ex-husbands who had not been honest with them and the Court in their financial dealings. Whilst no decisions were made about the eventual settlement that both women should receive the cases were sent back to the High Court for reviews of the settlements to take

place and potentially far greater awards being made to both of them. The Court assumes that both parties in a divorce settlement will be honest and provide full details of their financial positions and assets. However there has always been a reluctance to reopen settlements concluded previously because of the need for certainty.
In the appeals of Alison Sharland and Varsha Gohil decisions were made on the facts of their particular situation. The Court was satisfied that their respective ex-husbands had misled them and the Court as to the financial position making the Court Order unsafe. The Courts have a wide discretion to determine what is fair in any particular divorce but this can only be based upon full financial information being provided that is reliable and accurate. The Supreme Court decision is significant and could mean that many thousands of divorce settlements are reviewed and reopened. Whether more generous settlements would be substituted depends upon the particular circumstances of each divorce where there is thought to be dishonesty or the misleading of the Court about the financial

situation. At the very least this is a warning to husbands and wives that are going through a divorce that they should not mislead and must be honest in their financial dealings with full financial disclosure being given. If they do not they run the risk of any Court Order being overturned in the future. The clear message for all those going through divorce is to be honest. Holding back financial information or trying to be selective is not going to work. Whilst in those two particular cases the Supreme Court has merely referred their settlements back to the High Court for a new decision to be made it is likely that they will be receiving substantially more than originally ordered and in addition their ex-husbands will be paying the substantial legal costs involved. If you require advice on this matter, please contact Neale Grearson on 01603 693532 or email ng@clapham-collinge.co.uk. If you require advice on any other legal matter please contact Clapham & Collinge Solicitors on 01263 823398 or email info@clapham-collinge.co.uk
