Sheringham Christmas Tree Festival

Covering Sheringham, the Runtons, Holt and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and North Walsham Times

St. Peter’s Parish Church Sheringham extends a warm invitation to enjoy the atmosphere in your build up to Christmas by visiting Sheringham’s sixth Charity Christmas Tree Festival which will take place from Thursday 10 December to Tuesday 15 December.

Organised jointly by St Peter’s and St. Andrew’s Methodist Churches the festival is a major event for Sheringham and provides a spectacular spiritual platform for charities to raise funds by attracting donations from visitors. Last year’s event was hosted by St. Andrew’s and raised over £6,000 for the 41 charities that took part. This year, again, over forty local and national charities will be represented. Each charity will decorate its tree in an imaginative way that will uniquely portray the charities aims. There will also be a prayer tree where visitors will be able to write a prayer and display it on the tree.

The innovative displays will be supported by a background of seasonal music and entertainment by local groups. There will also be a variety of stalls where last minute Christmas gifts can be bought! Light refreshments will be available throughout the festival.

The festival will be open Weekdays 10.30am - 5.30pm, Saturday 10.30am – 6pm and Sunday 2pm – 6pm. On the evening of Saturday 12 December at 7.30pm there will be a concert amongst the trees.

Admission to the festival and the concert is free with donations welcomed to support the charities.

A warm welcome awaits so come along, support your favourite charity and share in the love of the Holy Child, Jesus Christ in this special community event.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Although now nearing the end of the year the kittens continue to arrive. One of the kittens mentioned last time is now in care but the other continues to evade capture. A further six kittens have also come into care from the colony and a young mum and her three kittens have also joined us, having been found dumped in an alley near a fast food outlet when the kittens were only about two days old.

Another litter is waiting to come in when we have space available; these are being cared for by a lady who has provided shelter for them, their mother and another kitten once she realised they had been abandoned. Some of the kittens from the feral colony have already left for new homes together. We have also said farewell to some of the other kittens and also several older cats, including one lovely black lad who is over 13 years old.

India, lovely black girl helping prepare Providing food, veterinary the Christmas Hampers in her new home care and cat litter for all the cats does cost the branch a considerable amount of money each year and without the help of our volunteers who are prepared to give their time to raise money, we would not be able to continue. On 21st November we held our annual Christmas Sale in the St Benets Hall, North Walsham and despite the

inclement weather and several other events taking place, we raised £1659.46. We are extremely grateful to all those who helped at the sale but must make special mention of Bren and Jenny for all the lovely Craft items they made, and to Andrea for the cakes, sausage rolls, mince pies, scones, etc. she provided, not only for the cake stall but also for eating at the sale. Barbara and Val, two of our friends, had a stall at Dereham Cats’ Protection on the same day and they raised £151.25 there. These two ladies are known as the “old dears with ears” when fund raising for us and throughout the year they attend car boot sales and hold garden sales to raise money for the cats even though they live some distance away. It is hard work but they are happy to do this knowing that the money will be spent on the cats and kittens in our care.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

Fairtrade at Sheringham Lights Switch-On

Some of the older people - yes, including me! - were not keen on braving the biting, strong wind, or the promised hail or snow, on the evening of 20 November.

But there was a great atmosphere as the crowds enjoyed the entertainment, shops and stalls. Four of the Fairtrade Group had baskets of Fairtrade samples - mainly fruit-juice, sweets and leaflets about Fairtrade. Most people, including children, knew something of Fairtrade's work - hurrah. We were surprised, but impressed, at how polite and receptive the youngsters were - they are a credit to their families and school.

Was the Switch -on worth waiting for? My goodness it was. What a fantastic display!

Congratulations to everyone involved. Brenda Smith, Fairtrade for Sheringham Group

North Norfolk Photographic Society

One of North Norfolk Photographic Society’s talented members spoke to the Society at Cley last month and showed examples of his work.

Paul Richards called his talk ’The Art of Nature Photography' and is developing fine art nature images which he hopes to sell through local galleries - judging from what he displayed he stands every chance of doing well.

By showing stunning images of birds, mammals and insects Paul explained how to make them stand out. The brilliant wildlife images included Kingfishers, Barn Owls, Water Voles and Dragonflies. It also included two audio-visual sequences one of Norfolk wildlife and one of a trip to Norway. The vote of thanks was proposed by Judith Wells. Members felt that this was one of the best talks we had ever had at North Norfolk Photographic Society.

Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are held on the first and third Wednesday of each month from 7.30pm in the Holt Community Centre. For further details please contact the Club Secretary, Judith Wells at secretary.nnps@gmail.com.

Kelling Probus Club

Kelling Probus Club held its November meeting at the Dales Hotel, Upper Sheringham on 19 November. Twenty three members and two guests were present.

After a very tasty lunch, our guest speaker was Father Andrew Lane, who spoke about his life and work. He told us of his ordination into the Church of England 40 years ago, and his search for a job after ordination. Andrew initially taught religion at a couple of schools, and eventually joined the RAF as a chaplain. It was the time of the 'cold war' and he was soon involved in the counselling side of his religion, and dealing with stress disorders. Not only was the stress of war present, but he was also involved with people connected with the disasters of this era, which included Lockerbie, Kings Cross, and the Zebrugge.

Andrew was then posted to Cyprus and was present when Terry Waite was repatriated, then seconded to Beirut and was given the job of teaching the teachers of children who had been deafened by the bombs and shells of the war in Lebanon. He found this job and the work with children who were there in the school, most rewarding – before the war the country of Lebanon had been one of the most prosperous in the world, but was by then impoverished and war torn. After he left the army he became involved with people he had known in his work with deaf children, and spent a lot of his later life helping and working for the ‘Society of St Luke', who still minister to deaf children in Lebanon.

Andrew Hyatt thanked Andrew for his very interesting talk .Probus meets once per month for lunch and a speaker, Interested? Contact John Whittington on 01263 820333 Sheringham Independent 429 December 5th 2015

Merlot-poached Pears Christmas is nearly here and we have been extremely busy with all the usual festive accoutrements that accompany this time of year.

As always we will be holding our annual Carol Concert on 23rd December at 6pm; it’s a great way to kick off your holiday and get into the spirit of things with some lusty singing and the best sausage rolls and mince pies this side of Bethlehem.

Our annual event – held to raise money for Cromer RNLI – is always hosted by our good friend Darren Thornton - now Reverend Thornton, Dean of Norwich, but once Darren from the Chocolate Box who used to moonlight at the Grove waiting tables in the summer. He once dashed back in the middle of the night in a panic thinking that he’d left the hot water boiler on, and was discovered at 3am wedged halfway through the pantry window attempting to check the switch. But he has moved on to bigger and better things and it is always lovely to see him in his old stomping ground once more.

Please enjoy our seasonal poached pears and we’ll hopefully see you for dinner before Christmas.

Well how wrong can you be? Just when you thought you had solved the murder of Jason Lillywhite, the whole shocking truth was not revealed until the final scenes and you have to admit you coudn't have seen the final twist coming, what a surprise. With an increasing murder toll, Athleston village turned out to be more like Midsummer Murders.

Sheringham is lucky to have a wonderful local talented group of amateur thespians in The Sheringham Players, and their production of ‘And Evermore Shall Be So’ lived up to expectations. Taking the title from the traditional folk song ‘Green Grow the Rushes Oh’, the play was full of twists, turns and red herrings and introduced us to some wonderful characters including Ida Cornish and Sheila Pashly, the village gossips played by Robin Spruce and Miriam Welch, the smooth Brandon Walsh, played by Dominic Pinkham, the enigmatic pillar of the community Mrs. Cranshaw, played by Thelma Torr, the sinister Roy Walker delivered with menacing style by Matt Warrington, the seemingly upright but murderous Helen Lillywhite, played by Ruth Elliot, the rather whimpish, but cunning, David Lillywhite, who turned out to be his brother Jason, played by Paul Marriott and the naughty Lydia Summerfield, played by Hazel Randell.

But great credit must go to lead character Tim Travers, playing the slightly bumbling but evil intentioned village vicar Eddie Summerfield who kept us guessing right to the very end.

The play and production with its wonderful set, directed by Greg Pope, who also played local chef Maurice Walker, was another wonderful evening’s entertainment and again proved the versatility of this lively group.

The final haunting rendition of the song from the beautiful voice of Miriam Welch was a fitting end to another excellent production. Looking forward to the next one.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER PICKING CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS FROM THE GARDEN

it symbolised eternal life, rebirth and the spring season. In some cultures ivy was a symbol of marriage and friendship, perhaps due to its tendency to cling.

Holly and Ivy have been used as winter decorations since ancient times. Decorating homes with these plants ‘freshened’ the air and their greenery reminded occupants of the coming spring. While the cold, dark days of winter turned much of the landscape dreary, holly and ivy remained green signifying eternal life, and the bright red holly berries provided cheerful spots of colour.

Additionally, these evergreen plants were believed to have magical properties. In some ancient cultures, the howling, icy winds in the dark nights of winter were thought to be ghosts and demons. Decorating with holly and ivy was thought to ward off these evil spirits. Holly has long been associated with winter holidays. Early Europeans used holly as ornamentation during their winter solstice celebrations to signify the gradual lengthening of days and the coming of spring. The use of ivy also goes back thousands of years. The fact that ivy stayed green throughout the year led some to believe it had magical properties and

It is really satisfying if we can decorate our houses using greenery from our own garden and if you don’t have evergreen plants that can be cut for Christmas decorations this is a good time to make plans for future years.

There are some 400 varieties of holly but possibly the most commonly grown variety is Ilex aquifolium, which with its numerous garden varieties is extensively used for hedging or as a single specimen tree. All species have inconspicuous , five petalled green or white flowers with male and female flowers usually being borne on separate trees. It is therefore necessary to have male and female plants growing close together to ensure that berries are produced. The varieties ‘Argentea Marginata’ and ‘Handsworth New Silver’ have gained an RHS Award of Garden Merit’ and are very attractive.

Ivies produce two kinds of growth, juvenile or runner growth with, with lobed leaves and aerial roots which attach themselves to any surface, and adult or arborescent growth, which has leaves with waxy margins and no aerial roots, and which bears flowers and fruit. stall holders set up from 8.30am Pitches £5 Beverages on sale in the newly renovated Pavilion For any further details contact Hayley on 07765633539 Car boot sales at Bodham playing field on Saturdays 24 May until 6th September 9am till noon pitches £5 no bookings needed set up from 7.30 am refreshments available. Cuttings taken from the arborescent growth, will retain the adult form and develop into rounded, bushy shrubs. Recommended varieties include Hedera canariensis with green leaves that turn bronze in the winter and H. colchica, the Persian Ivy, which has many attractive varieties.

However although we normally think of holly and ivy to complement the fir Christmas tree it is worth walking around the garden to see what other foliage can be used such as bay, rosemary, hebe, pittosporum, eleagnus and myrtle.

So, this Christmas, bring your garden indoors and don’t rely on commercial baubles and tinsel. A couple of hours foraging in the garden could bring plenty of good material, not only foliage but stems, berries, cones and seedheads which can be used to bring some natural magic to your home. Keeping Fit and Healthy –

American Football Club Opens at Sheringham High School

A new weekly American Football sports club has been opened at Sheringham High School.

The club was launched last month as part of the Council’s Sports Clubs and Hubs project by Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council and Sheringham South Cllr Judy Oliver.

The Council’s Sports Clubs and Hubs team has been working with the school since February, initially creating a boxing and street dance club.

Students from the school then carried out a survey to see what other sports clubs students would be interested in and Flag Football, a type of non-con tact American Football, came out as one of the most popular.

Now the students, with help from Wyn Nurse from North Norfolk District Council’s Sports Clubs and Hubs team and Head of PE Mr Mclinchy have launched the club just for pupils. The club meets every Wednesday between 3.15pm and 4.15pm.

Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council said “Health and wellbeing is a council priority and our sports clubs are all about getting young people involved in sport early on. Physical activity is part of a healthy lifestyle for all age groups and it was great to see people enthusiastic and starting a new sports club.”

Gresham’s sponsors successful North Walsham Rugby Club Minis Festival

Children and coaches from ten Norfolk and Suffolk-based rugby clubs took part in North Walsham Rugby Club’s 39th Mini-Rugby Festival, sponsored by Gresham’s School.

Despite windy and muddy conditions, the day was a huge success for everyone who took part.

Gresham’s Rugby Coach, Sam Curtis, assisted by some current and former members of Gresham’s 1st XV Rugby team ran a fun rugby game where children had to try and throw a ball through a cut-out rugby player to win prizes which included signed rugby balls by Old Greshamians and England and British Lions Internationals, Tom and Ben Youngs, an undoubtedly popular addition to the Festival!

The teams who took part in the Festival ranged in ages from U7s to U12s and included players from Swaffham, Norwich, Holt, Wymondham, Diss, Bury St Edmunds, Lowestoft & Great Yarmouth, West Norfolk, Southwold and North Walsham.

Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club

Geoff Mather, last year’s Chairman, stood in as chairman for the lunch meeting on 3 November at the Links Hotel in West Runton.

He was delighted to welcome Tony Ireland and Michael Webb to the Club at their first meeting as members. The guest speaker was PC Barrie Cresswell, Beat Manager of the Cromer Safer Neighbourhood Team on the subject of ‘Policework in North Norfolk’. Barrie explained the structure and ways of working for the north Norfolk area and answered questions from members. A vote of thanks was proposed by Jack Broughton.

As an additional event in November, we held a coffee morning in the hope of attracting new members to come and meet us informally. Twelve members, five wives and two visitors attended. Furthermore, both of the visitors intend to join, so it must have been an enjoyable occasion for them 01263 825523 or 07990 505095 as well as us.

Service forbring Local The December meeting is our Christmas lunch, to Local which members may ladyPeople guests and other friends. The following lunch meeting will be on Wethere arewill open every coffee day during 2 February because of our January break. However, be another morning the on Tuesday 12 January, which will again be open to ladies Christmas & New Year holiday period. and non-members.

The Club is open to gentlemen who are retired or nearly so. If you are interested, or know someone who might be, please contact Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 for more information or look at our website www.candsprobus.club.

Retired? New to the area?

You do not need to be a recent arrival for this to be of interest, but you do have to be retired or near to it.

Cromer & Sheringham Probus Club is a great environment for retired men to make and meet friends over a good lunch. We also have a guest speaker at most meetings, with talks on a wide range of topics, often with a local flavour.

All in all, the club is an excellent way of getting to know what goes on in the area. The speakers are part of it, but our members are also involved in a wide range of other local clubs and activities, so connections can be established. An added bonus is that you do not have todo anything other than come along to enjoy the meetings and, if you cannot attend every month, it does not matter.

Now taking bookings for Christmas & New Year. We are open every day during the holiday period.

The regular meetings take place on the first Tuesday of the month at The Links Country Park Hotel in West Runton.

Gentlemen are very welcome to get in touch and book to attend a regular meeting as a visitor, however we are holding a coffee morning, open to all, when booking is not required. It will take place on Tuesday, 12 January from 10.30am at the Hole-in-One Sports Bar, at The Links Hotel.

The coffee morning has been arranged for the purpose of welcoming new people to come along to get to know us and what the club provides. Other halves of both members and visitors are very welcome at this event.

More details of the coffee morning and the club generally can be obtained at www.candsprobus.club or by contacting Dave Vickery on 01263 824306.

Sheringham Coastwatch is looking out for you

If variety is the spice of your life, being a volunteer with Sheringham Coastwatch must be the ideal role for you.

What other voluntary role ranges from giving water to a thirsty dog to (on one occasion!) helping to dispose of a hand-grenade? Or helping a holiday-maker with weather or tidal information and then helping in a Coastguard search. And all without moving more than ten feet.

Our volunteers keep a lookout over the cliffs, beaches and sea visible from the former Coastguard lookout high above the Sheringham golf course. If we spot someone in trouble we immediately contact the emergency services (usually HM Coastguard) and provide any assistance requested by them.

So as well as enjoying the spectacular views there is enormous satisfaction in knowing that

we are helping to ensure the safety of those on the sea or using the beaches and cliff paths. Whether you are male or female, of working age or retired, you could enrich your life by joining our friendly group of volunteers.

No previous maritime experience is needed. Full on-the-job training and on-going support is provided. Professionalism and common sense are the order of the day, not physical ability.

Like to join us? You must be at least 18 years of age and fit enough to walk to the lookout up a fairly steep hill over some uneven ground.

To find out more please either ring the Station Manager on 01263 713392 or email info@sheringhamcoastwatch.org.uk. www.sheringhamcoastwatch.org.uk has more information.

Members come from many different backgrounds and “work” for three hours on a weekly or fortnightly basis.

An application form and a further information sheet can be downloaded from the website or can be picked up from our lookout which is on the coastal path on Skelding Hill above Sheringham Golf Club.

Christmas at St Margaret’s Thorpe Market We cannot promise the snow outside but we do promise a warm, cosy and atmospheric inside.

The Carol Service for 2015 is on Sunday 20 December at 6.30 pm. It will be led by Rev Janet Stewart.

The service will be the traditional Nine Lessons and Carols, as broadcast annually by Kings College Cambridge. This order of service originates from the end of World War 1 and was devised as a national morale-raiser. The organ on this occasion will be augmented by local musicians. If anyone would like to join us with woodwind, brass or strings, please contact us on info@thorpemarket.org.uk. A chance to dust down those sleeping instruments and start playing again! Mulled wine will end the evening.

Snowy by Margaret Hunter

Carols 2014 by Paul Damen

The Midnight Service on Thursday 24 December will again be by candlelight and led by Rev Stewart. It commences at 11.30pm.

However, not everyone will be happy that Squiffy is to inherit, and who amongst them could be driven to murder to keep the secrets from being revealed?'

Strange Fascination Theatre was created in summer 2014 by professionals Daisy Plackett, Paul Andrew Goldsmith and Simon Michael – Morgan to create a sustainable industry for theatre professionals in East Anglia. To date they have performed immersive murder mysteries as well as open air Shakespeare to sell out audiences. 2016 will see the company embarking on their first tour of the region. Their shows are fast paced and immersive, full of comedy, drama and excitement! Long ago, before radiators ruled and boilers burned, And frost grew icy blue on the inside of windows,

My father rose at five for the early shift, whilst we

Slept, snug and warm under sheets and blankets.

He would dress breathing breath like smoke and with

Sleep still on his mind, light the fire in the cold grate.

He would quietly make his breakfast and drink his tea.

The fire would roar and heat the house and he would slip

Quietly off to work, wrapped and packed against the cold.

An hour later we would wake to a warm house and eat Breakfast in the warmth of my father’s love.

Gentle Laser Skin Rejuvenation

- also known as Polaris laser, Laser Skin Tightening or Laser Genesis - the perfect lunch-time procedure

What does it do? It is an innovated, technologically advanced way to promote vibrant and healthy looking skin in men and women. The non-invasive laser procedure safely, discretely and effectively treats fine lines, wrinkles, large pores, uneven skin texture and diffuse redness. You can expect to see subtle results after just one treatment without unwanted side effects.

What does the treatment feel like? Patients describe the treatment as relaxing and therapeutic. You will experience a gentle warming of your skin’s surface as the laser headpiece is moved back and forth above you skin. Laser procedure is very comfortable; it’s sometimes called the warm laser facial. It is a gentle, relaxing and virtually painless procedure with zero downtime.

How does it work? The effect that Laser treatment has on your skin is a gradual one. Most of our patients begin to see an improvement in their skin after about 3 or 4 treatments. We use a medical grade laser to gently heat the skin below the surface. This “healthy heat” stimulates the body’s own natural healing response which stimulates new skin cell growth and collagen production. The texture of your skin literally becomes smoother. Depending on what you are having treated, pores get smaller, lines are decreased as your underlying collagen is refreshed, and color of your skin will even out while redness is diffused.

What is diffuse redness? Diffuse redness is the appearance of facial redness, such as rosy cheeks. This condition is caused by dilated capillaries. The most common areas are the nose, forehead and cheeks. Diffuse redness is often associated with a condition called rosacea. Laser treatment will help your appearance by gently generating heat in the dilated capillaries resulting in reduced redness.

How many treatments will you need? People and conditions will vary in the way they respond, based on their skin biology. Typically we recommend a series of 4 to 6 treatments to optimize the results.

How long does the treatment take? Each treatment session takes about 30 minutes.

What are the side effects? Most patients report few if any side effects and return to their normal activities immediately following the treatment. You may be flushed from the heat but that will disappear within a few hours of the treatment. The most common side effect of Laser treatment is beautiful skin!

What can you expect? Laser treatment can help restore the skin’s youthful glow and appearance by smoothing out uneven textures caused by aging, sun damage or scars. You will see a creamier, healthy complexion as large pores reduce in size, and minor imperfections are diminished. The individual treatment results are subtle, but the overall effect of multiple treatments can be quite dramatic.

Can anyone have it done? Yes. Adults of all ages and all skin types can benefit from Laser treatment and can have it done year round.

How does it differ from other laser treatments you offer? If you have obvious issues or medical conditions such as rosacea, acne, acne scarring or pigmentation issues then you need a customised treatment plan which may include any one or more of our sixteen lasers. We first suggest a consultation with our doctor for such problems.

New European Succession Laws; or, why those with EU assets should review their English Wills Written by Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr

It is often said that the reason that France and other continental countries have so many small farmers is due to their ‘forced heirship’ laws, introduced by Napoleon. We typically think of adjoining, tiny fields farmed by cousins, with all the family feuds that accompany such geographical and familial proximity.

Napoleon codified French and other European laws and created rigid legal structures which endure this day. Amongst these are the European ‘forced heirship’ rules whereby certain fixed portions of a deceased person’s estate must go to designated heirs. Contrast this with the English right of testamentary freedom and you will see one of many legal examples of ‘vive la difference’.

But is all that set to change?

New EU cross-border inheritance laws are

now in place, allowing individuals to opt out of the forced heirship rules that apply in a number of EU countries. Individuals may opt either for the law of the country of their nationality or last habitual residence to apply to any assets across Europe.

The default rules will remain that the law of the country where someone is a habitual resident when they die is the law that governs succession to their estate as a whole. The new rules are intended to ease cross-border succession.

Even though the UK (and Ireland and Denmark) opted out of the new rules, there are implications for Brits with assets in other EU countries. If someone has an English Will, they will automatically have chosen English law. As well as removing EU forced heirship rules governing the succession of EU assets owned by a British national (a good thing), the changes mean, for instance, that the right for disappointed persons to claim against their overseas assets [under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependents) Act 1975] might well now arise (a bad thing).

Those owning assets in other EU countries

free parking Council to provide

on the weekend before Christmas No charges on 19 & 20 December

Parking in North Norfolk District Council’s car parks will be free over the weekend before Christmas (19 and 20 December).

The Council has decided to, once again, waive the parking charges prior to Christmas, as in previous years. The decision supports North Norfolk's businesses and traders by encouraging people to buy their Christmas gifts and supplies in their local towns.

At a crucial time of year for the retail community, it is also a gesture of goodwill for the festive season in response to requests from businesses.

Cabinet Member for Assets Cllr John Rest said "At such an important time of the year for retailers, it is vital that the Council supports local businesses. There are scores of excellent shops across the district offering a wide range of goods and services. By providing this weekend of free car parking, we hope to encourage people to use that wealth of provision."

On December 19 and 20, shoppers will be able to stay throughout the day without a ticket in any North Norfolk District Council run car park, saving them up to £1.20 an hour.
