Local girl achieves her childhood dream and is awarded Doctorate of Philosophy in Ireland

Amy Lusher was deputy head girl at Sheringham High School (2006) and attended Fakenham College (2006-2008). After moving to Plymouth for her undergraduate degree, Amy moved to Ireland to take up a PhD research position in marine pollution at GalwayMayo Institute of Technology (GMIT).

Microplastics, which are tiny fragments or fibres of plastic, are an emerging pollutant of global concern. They are formed either from the breakup of plastic litter in the ocean or discharged directly from industrial and domestic effluent. Little is known about their effects on ecosystems, yet they continue to become more abundant and are found in every ocean on earth.

A keen swimmer and kayaker, Amy grew up loving the ocean. She spent her summers and some winters on the beach or in the sea between Sheringham and the family’s beach hut at Cromer. She says her interest in biology and marine life stem both from her mother, Anita Lusher's interest and love of nature, as well as her late grandfather Ken Durrant's passion for insects.

Sheringham Lifeboat

Lifeboat Boat ‘Oddfellows B 818 Service Launch –Tuesday 15 December 2015

At 21.08 hrs on 15 December HM Coastguard tasked Sheringham Lifeboat to launch to assist in a search for a missing person. The lifeboat was tasked to do an inshore search back toward Sheringham. Both Coastguard and Police teams were completing foreshore searches at the east end of Sheringham.

Following a complicated search on a dismal dark night the casualty was eventually located 400 metres west of Sheringham Lifeboat station at the toe of the cliff by a very alert searcher. The casualty was assessed and stabilised on site, secured in an RNLI stretcher and then carried to the lifeboat from whence he was transported to Sheringham west Fisherman’s beach in the centre of town where he could be accessed by the paramedics.

Local girl achieves her childhood dream and is awarded Doctorate of Philosophy in Ireland

Continued from front cover... Dr Lusher’s research was the first to examine the distribution of microplastics in the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans. During her research, Dr Lusher developed new methods for sampling at sea, and techniques for the detection of microplastics in animals. Dr Lusher published the first reports of the presence of this emerging pollutant in the North Atlantic, Arctic Ocean and in whales. She has published her research in internationally renowned journals including Nature’s Scientific Reports. Through enhancing our knowledge of microplastics, Dr Lusher’s research provides the foundation for assessing the ecological risks posed by microplastics. She was honored to accept her Doctorate in her family’s presence when they attended her graduation ceremony in Galway in November.

The lifeboat was gently nosed into the shingle beach and the casualty evacuated from the lifeboat and taken onto the lower end of the fishermen’s gangway where he was continually assessed by the crew whilst waiting for the ambulance to arrive. On arrival on scene, the paramedics were debriefed by the lifeboat crew before the casualty was taken by ambulance to Addenbrooke's Hospital.

Carnival letter for help FRIENDLY & RELIABLE - LOCAL & LONG DISTANCE

Sheringham Carnival Association’s activities have grown considerably over the last 5 years and they are now responsible for organising and contributing to 12 major events in the town. This work has not only raised the profile of Sheringham locally, nationally and internationally but also attracted large numbers of visitors to the area. It is a focal point for our community and brings all parts of the town together. Visitors often comment to marshalls volunteering at Carnival events, that in their experience a community which works together as ours does, is very much a rarity and a pleasure to visit. The work of the Carnival Organisation has a significant impact on the economic health of the area and surrounding villages. With B&Bs reporting that they have weekends linked to the Carnival activities booked up a year in advance. The success of the Carnival committee has come about from a great deal of hard work from a small band of people but also from the fact that they are supported by all aspects of the community.

These sectors include Sheringham Town

Council, the local Chamber of Trade and local businesses as well as the local population. In the last year the Carnival Association have organised or supported The Viking Festival, The Crab and Lobster festival, Sheringham St.Georges Day Concert, The Potty Festival, The Classic Car Festival, The Harley Davidson parade and meet, The Forties Weekend, The Three Peaks Challenge, The Remembrance Parade, Christmas Lights Up and the decorating of the town for Christmas. All of these in addition to the 77 events of Carnival Week and other associated activities. 2016 will see the Carnival Association running and helping at all of these events again and very much looking forward to the community getting behind them again for another fantastic year for Sheringham. Most of these events are run by a small band of committee and helpers, who have found they have made many friends through being involved with Carnival activities and also had great fun and satisfaction in supporting and contributing to their community. If the Carnival Association can achieve all this with the support of a small

band can you imagine what they could achieve if there were more people actively involved. Could this be you? The Association always needs marshalls to help run the parades, man the road closures and generally be of assistance to the town’s visitors. We can provide training and safety clothing and guarantee you an interesting time. The more people we have the less time people have to cover on rotas for events. We also need First Aiders to help at the events we organise. The Carnival runs First Aid training courses to help provide this cover. All we ask is you volunteer for a few hours in the year for Carnival events. Just as with marshalling it is the more the merrier. The next course for first Aid is in February and if you are interested, contact us on the details below. There is a role for everybody in Carnival. If you want to help with marshalling or in any other capacity contact Liz Withington on lizwithington1@gmail.com or on the Sheringham Carnival fb page or web page. The Carnival Team with Colin Seal are already getting ready for the Viking Festival on the Sunday 14 February so get on board and be part of a worthwhile organisation making a difference to the town as a whole.

“It’s a common misconception that a larger firm is better.”

I am Clare Mayell and I run Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor, qualified Family Mediator and Collaborative solicitor.

As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. The common misconception is that a larger local firm or city firm is better but this is incorrect. A client just pays more.

When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I am one of the few solicitors that offffers a free first appointment so that clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision.

I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.

“I would say to any potential client to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.

Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 01263 823465 0 1263 8 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk

Chilli & Chocolate Braised Venison

A very happy new year from all of us here at the Grove.

After a tremendously busy Christmas period we’re closed for January to give our staff a well-earned rest. We are lucky enough to have a superb team here who all work very hard and we appreciate everything that they do. Our winter menu has been very well received and Icarus Hines’

Norfolk venison was the undoubted star. This version has an unusual chocolate and chilli twist, perfect for warming up those long nights before spring arrives. We look forward to seeing you all in 2016.

Ingredients 2 tbsp vegetable oil 1½ kg diced stewing venison 3 large carrot, roughly chopped 1 onion, roughly chopped 1 tbsp cumin seed 1 tsp ground coriander large pinch of chilli powder 1 red chilli, whole 1 heaped tbsp plain flour 500ml red wine 300ml beef stock 400g can chopped tomato large thyme sprig 2 bay leaf 50g dark chocolate (more than 70% coco solids)

Method Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Heat the oil in a large casserole dish and brown the meat in batches. Add the vegetables in the dish and brown lightly, then stir in the spices, chilli and flour, and cook for a few mins. Pour in the wine, stock and tomatoes, then add the herbs. Bring to a simmer.

Weather with Ned Nimbus

The past three months were as forecast, the main theme being the warm or very mild conditions throughout.

Overall 2015 for us was ok, beginning with a mild winter then average conditions except for the majority of August, which was poor.

Cover with a lid and put in the oven for 1 hr 30 mins, then remove the lid and cook for a further 1 hr until the meat is really tender. Remove from the oven and leave to cool slightly, then stir in the chocolate and serve.

Things got back on track, however, in September. UK wide the west and north suffered with a lot of rain and when it came to the recent record-breaking deluges, a saturated ground could take no more.

Atlantic wise the hurricane season was benign. This is the fourth year now that predictions of increased activity, off the back of climate change, have not materialised.

The next three months will basically follow on from the previous three months although there is now a greater chance of days with temperatures below normal but none of these colder spells should last long.

The end of February and then during the second half of March look favoured for some well above average temperatures. Ned Nimbus

JAZZ IN JANUARY

Jazz continues to flourish in this region. Over the last few years, The Goat Inn at Skeyton has developed a reputation as the home of traditional jazz in North Norfolk and the very popular Norfolk Dixieland Jazz Band will continue to play Sunday afternoon sessions on the first Sunday of the month in 2016. The exception will be March when it will be the second Sunday. The music starts at 1.30pm and admission will be free. You can just drop in for a drink and enjoy the atmosphere or choose to eat in the garden room, where the band plays, or in restaurant. If you would like a table for lunch, however, it is essential to book. Tel: 01692 538600.

The regular band is John Gooding (cornet), Tim Densham (clarinet and saxophones), Bill Brewer (trombone), Peter Gregory (banjo and guitar), Liz Underdown (bass) and Vic Brown (drums).

Jazz at The Hub, the bar at Sheringham Little Theatre, is another success story. The venue provides an alternative to traditional jazz with an emphasis on small combinations of musicians from within the region playing a variety of styles. Since the venue started promoting monthly events on Sunday evenings in September 2014, it has had capacity audiences. The first date of the New Year will be 31 January when local trombone maestro Dave Amis will lead the eclectic Cyan Traces. The band always plays new and varied programmes, which keep it fresh and appealing. The line-up will be Dave Amis (trombone), Holly Graham (vocals), Tom Harris (piano), Ivars Galenieks (double bass) and Alex Best (drums/percussion). Tickets £10 from the box office Tel: 01263 822347 or on-line at www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com Sheringham Independent 431 January 16th 2016

Cricket lovely Cricket … or is it?

Roger’s sole aim is to defeat the British Railways Maintenance Division Yeading East team but he is having problems assembling a team and, even when he has, the complicated relationships between the players and their wives, ex-wives and girlfriends causes uproar, which even Roger cannot escape when his wife, the usual docile Mim, rebels.

‘Outside Edge’, based in the successful 90s sitcom of the same name, is the next production of local Amateur Dramatic Group, Stage Direct at Sheringham Little Theatre.

So why not come along and be ‘bowled over’ as this very funny play cannot fail to brighten up a dark January evening.

Performances are on Friday 22 January and Saturday 23 January at 7.30pm. Tickets at £10 are available from Sheringham Little Theatre Box Office on 01263 822347.

The final cheque of £1000 was presented to Janet Acott, for the Ronald Macdonald House Charity (Camberwell) in memory of Janet's son David, who lived in the village and died earlier in the year aged only 17. The charity provided them with home from home accommodation when David was in hospital for a prolonged period. Janet was supported by many of David's friends and family at the handover.

Speaking after the handover, event secretary Callum Ringer said it was important “we raise money, not just for village organisations but also recognise charities which help people from the village. We are really pleased to be able to raise some money for a charity close to the hearts of David's family and friends, and in his memory". The handover was closed by a set from local duo AudioJack.

Rock Bodham 2016 will take place on 23 and 24 July and will be the fifth edition of the event. More details will be announced for this early in the new year.

The Regency Act 1937 and restrictions on the use of LPAs

Written by Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr The case of XY v Public Guardian (2015) involved a very wealthy individual who in making his Lasting Power of Attorney (“LPA”) wished to impose detailed guidance and tight restrictions upon his Attorneys.

The case was brought by the Public Guardian (“PG”), the head of the administrative arm of the Court of Protection, who refused to register the LPA because of the conditions. XY was a high-worth individual who owned assets in numerous countries and wanted to include additional safeguards. The conditions were intricate and aimed to ensure that decisions could only be made on his behalf when he clearly lacked capacity and there was a genuine financial need for a decision to be made. The provisions were lengthy (five sheets) and required two psychiatrists’ opinions and the opinion of a ‘Protector’. The role of the Protector was to review the medical evidence before the LPA could be used. These provisions were similar to the Regency Act 1937 (the law that governs how decisions would be made in the event of the monarch lacking capacity). The Protector was a third- party who had to agree with the medical evidence before the

powers conferred on the Attorneys by the LPA could be used.

The PG objected on the basis that most of the conditions imposed were an unreasonable fetter on the Attorneys’ power to act and were therefore ineffective under the Mental Capacity Act. One of the main concerns was that the ‘Protector’ was not an Attorney, yet was in a position to interfere with the Attorneys’ duty to act in the best interests of XY. The Protector was not bound in law by the same duties as the Attorneys.

Even though this case is very specific to the facts and concerns an extremely rich person, essentially it is about the question of whether the LPA is effective “only when I don’t have capacity” in accordance with the prescribed form of an LPA, or not. There is something akin to a government health warning in the new-style LPA, as follows: “Be careful – this can make your LPA a lot less useful. Your attorney might be asked to prove you do not have mental capacity each time they try to use this LPA”. The question therefore is does “a lot less useful” mean the same as “ineffective”?

Diabetes UK - North Norfolk Group

Through the North Norfolk Group's fundraising activities this year we are again able to offer a limited number of FREE support holidays, organised by Diabetes UK, during the summer of 2016. These will be available for children and young people with diabetes between the ages of 7-10 and 11-17 who live in Norfolk.

The holidays are invaluable for the youngsters, allowing them to gain skills and confidence to help them deal with their diabetes among others of the same age. Some go on holiday having never met anyone else with diabetes before. So to be able to leave thinking “I’m not different from anyone else” has to make it all worthwhile. 100% of them said that they had benefited from their holiday.

If your child is at all interested, please encourage him/her to contact Jackie or David on 01692 405492 or email diabetes.uk@hotmail.co.uk All contacts will be acknowledged on a first come first served basis. Whilst we are prepared to fund the holiday, you would be expected to organise travel and provide pocket money.

Details of the holidays for 2016 will be available from us early in the New Year.

The Senior Judge who decided the case told the PG that “it is not part of his

statutory duties to police the practicality or utility of individual aspects of an LPA.” This was a polite rebuff to the PG not to involve himself in such matters. The conditions in the LPA were difficult and complex but did not make it ineffective.

The case makes it clear that there is a distinction between a Protector who confirms incapacity (allowed) and third parties sanctioning decisions of attorneys (not allowed).

Latest Big Society Fund grants agreed

Groups encouraged to apply for next round The latest round of Big Society Fund grants have been agreed, with North Norfolk District Council supporting a wide range of groups, including musicians, young footballers and girl guides.

NNDC's Big Society Fund offers grants of up to £15,000 to voluntary and community organisations based in North Norfolk.

Since the fund started in 2012, in excess of £1,000,000 has been awarded to more than 100 community projects.

The committee which oversees the grants meets four times a year. This time they approved grants totalling nearly £27,500. The awards are subject to each group agreeing to formal terms and conditions.

BSF grant awards in this round were awarded to:

• Stalham Brass Band (£3,000) towards musical instruments. The band offers opportunities for children aged 6 to 16 who attend schools in the Stalham area to learn to read music and play brass instruments. • High Kelling Society (£4,199) to buy portable, easy to assemble staging to be

used in the village hall for social and cultural events. The staging will help increase the use of the hall, which until now has had no stage or raised platform. • Sheringham Girl Guiding (£5,000) for conversion of a cupboard to a purpose built level access shower and toilet at the guides’ headquarters. In the past limited facilities have been highlighted as a reason why the headquarters is not used more by external organisations. • Happisburgh Hammers Youth Football (£2,300) to buy football goals, football kits and match footballs to accommodate the increased club membership numbers and age range. The Hammers were established last year by a group of local parents concerned about the lack of opportunity for their children to play youth football. • Northrepps Parish Council (£3,675) for the replacement of play equipment at Northrepps Adventure

The Beachcomers Dining Club

long-established in North Norfolk, met for the last time at The Feathers Hotel in Holt on 7 December and is now officially disbanded.

Beachcombers, when it was first formed, met at The Maltings in Weybourne and then moved to Pinewoods Leisure Centre. Membership during the 1990s reached a maximum of one hundred and there was still a waiting list! There were guest speakers each month and, at the December meeting, dress was "formal" and we danced to a live band.

Some 12 years ago, due to declining membership, a decision was made to move to The Feathers Hotel. At the same time, Christine Jackson (a newcomer to the area) volunteered to organize the catering plus arranging regular speakers. These guest speakers have talked on such a wide variety of subjects (too many to list here) and we have been entertained by bellringers and The Cliftonville Singers.

Harrie Morshuis, proprietor of the hotel - a historic building in Holt dating from 1650 - made us so welcome. Nothing ever was too much trouble! With Diane organizing our monthly gatherings, assisted by her very efficient team who provided silver service, it has indeed been a great pleasure to meet there and we are undoubtedly going to miss these meetings.

Throughout these 30 years or more, many members have served on the committee - each one contributing to its success. However, Christine Jackson is intending to move away from the area and has very reluctantly decided to resign. We owe her a huge debt of gratitude and wish her well in her new home.

Although tinged with some sadness, our last meal (as usual in the tastefully decorated Gresham Suite) was so enjoyable, and the service excellent as usual.

The gentlemen all went home carrying a bottle of wine and the ladies a box of chocolates. Raffle prizes - Bakers of Holt Christmas hampers were won by four members and, as you can imagine, they went home with happy smiling faces! Sheringham Independent 431 January 16th 2016

Playground, to improve and enhance provision for children of all ages. • North Walsham Gymnastics Club (£9,248) towards a larger project called Dream, Believe, Achieve, which will enable the club to move into and furnish a new venue with gym equipment and build toilet and changing facilities.

Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council and Cabinet Member for Big Society, said “The Big Society Fund continues to help fund or part-fund projects which are making a real difference to people across the district. The type of organisations it helps varies widely in terms of age groups, activity type and location. We are helping people in both towns and rural areas improve sporting facilities, play areas, music bands, museums, heritage, lunch clubs and to buy defibrillators. I would encourage groups and organisations to realise how wide that range is and put in an application.”

If you have an idea or a project that you wish to develop and apply for funding, you are encouraged to speak to your local Councillor and get in touch with the Council (via Sonia Shuter 01263 516173, email supporting.communities@north-norfolk.gov.uk) or visit www.northnorfolk.org/bigsocietyfund Ce leb ra tin g

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER GET RID OF YOUR GARDEN WEEDS

AnnuAl WEEDS Bring up annual weeds by shallowly working the soil with a hoe. If you hoe too deep it may bring up ungerminated seeds to the surface.

Over the years there have been some bizarre and unusual art installations in the Turbine Hall of Tate Modern in London. The current work is called Empty Lot and is the work of Mexican sculptor Abraham Cruzvilleges.

Two large stepped triangular platforms, created with scaffolding, support a grid of triangular wooden planters. Each planter was filled with soil collected from parks, heaths, commons, green spaces and gardens across London. Some compost was added and the planters are lit and regularly watered. However nothing has been deliberately planted in the soil. Flowers, mushrooms or weeds may or may not grow, dependent on what is already in the soil, what seeds or spores are carried in the air or what people drop into the structure. For the artist the project is about feelings of hope and expectation, as much as it is about whatever may or may not happen over the six months of the installation.

Equally, back in the ordinary world, it is always amazing what grows in any soil that is left uncultivated in our own gardens. Weeds can grow in great variety and numbers and at amazing speed which can intimidate the gardener. These weeds can be controlled but first the type of weed has to be identified. Some are annuals, such as hairy bittercress and chickweed, and have a one - year life cycle that ends with them setting seeds for the next generation. Others are perennials, like dandelions (having a lifecycle longer than one year).

Common annual weeds include: CHICKWEED This weed thrives on rich soils, quickly smothering other seedlings and spoiling the appearance of borders. Remove it promptly before it flowers. SHEPHERDS PuRSE Rosettes of leaves grow all year round sending up characteristic heart-shaped seed pods after white flowers. Buried seeds can germinate after 30 years of lying dormant in the soil, so prevent a potential problem by removing plants and seedheads as soon as you spot them. GROunDSEl Produces seeds all the year round. Although hoeing seedlings is effective, remove larger uprooted plants as these can still set seeds that will germinate.

PEREnnIAl WEEDS If you wish to use a weedkiller, treat perennial weeds with the ‘systemic’ weedkiller glyphosate, which is applied to the foliage but absorbed into the plant’s sap stream. The chemicals go all the way to the roots and kill all parts of the plant. It’s a slow acting but efficient method. Common perennial weeds include:

GROunD ElDER Underground stems grow beneath the soil surface and wind indiscriminately around garden flowers. Patience is the key if you want to dig out these rhizomes and the job may have to be repeated several times. You can apply a glyphosate-based weedkiller. Alternatively you can lay a weed control membrane between plants to help suppress the weeds. DAnDElIOn Recognisable to us all – you can dig out the long tap root by hand or spot treat with a glyphosate stick. Further follow up treatments may be necessary. BInDWEED The twisting stems of bindweed can swamp flowers and shrubs in borders. Try pushing a pole or cane into the border next to the bindweed to encourage it to climb and then apply the systemic weedkiller with less risk of it getting onto nearby specimen plants.

It will be interesting to go back to Tate Modern in March and see what plants and weeds have grown. Bob Wilkinson

Construction begins on new affordable homes for Upper Sheringham

Building work started last month to create a new housing development in Upper Sheringham, which will provide eight new affordable homes for local people.

The new properties, located off Blowlands Lane, are being developed by Broadland Housing Association in partnership with North Norfolk District Council, transforming the site of the former Council Depot which has been vacant for many years.

With property prices in many areas of North Norfolk having risen beyond the reach of many local people, the mixture of two, three and four bedroom homes, will be a Rural Exception Housing scheme. These are sites where an exception has been made to normal planning policy to allow affordable homes to be built to meet local housing needs.

Andrew Savage, Executive Partnerships Director at Broadland Housing Association, explained “Rural Exception Housing schemes are a key means of providing affordable homes in rural areas. This development will give local people an opportunity to remain living in their community. We are very pleased to be working with North Norfolk District Council to provide this much needed affordable housing for Upper Sheringham, and we look forward to breathing new life into this vacant site. ”

North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet

Member for Strategic Housing Cllr John Rest said “The delivery of affordable housing for rent is one of the Council’s most important objectives. This partnership with Broadland Housing Association, Upper Sheringham Parish Council and the Homes and Communities Agency will create eight rental properties in a rural area, supporting the local economy and contributing to community cohesion.”

Record Rotary Christmas Sleigh Collection Major portion to Canaan Homeless Centre

This year’s Christmas Sleigh collection by Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club is the highest ever recorded in recent years.

Over two evenings around the streets of Cromer and two days outside Morrisons, the Club raised over £1600! A large amount of this will go to the President’s preferred charity the Canaan Homeless Centre in Sheringham. Some £250 was collected during the first evening followed by £274 the following night. Then, on the Friday and Saturday at Morrisons, the Club collected £448 and £642 respectively. Father Christmas greets a Cromer family

“No one can quite believe this year’s collection”, commented Club President, Debz Conisbee. “Indeed, it is twice the amount raised last year and beats the previous best over recent years by over £200. We are so grateful to the people of North Norfolk and to our collectors – both from within the Club and friends from outside.”

Rotarians gather for the evening sleigh collection

A major portion of the proceeds will be presented to the Canaan Trust at a special meeting of the Club on January 27.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Now that Christmas is past and New Year celebrations over we look forward to finding loving new homes for the many cats and kittens in care. Titania has already left to join her new family and Lottie and Pearl will be leaving us shortly too.

Volunteering for the branch will no doubt see us face many challenges during 2016, and without all the wonderful people who give up their spare time to help the cats, in whatever capacity, we would not be able to continue. As well as our fosterers, and the people who help with either the cat care or fund raising, we must not forget our supporters who give us donations, goods to sell or food, beds, blankets and toys for the cats. So many caring people out there are all willing to help the needy cats in North Norfolk, the area covered by our branch. We thank you all and look forward to seeing you during 2016.

In the last article we mentioned ways of helping your cat to settle in its new home and indicated that for kittens the process is different. We would suggest that, like a cat when he arrives in his new home, the kitten should be put in a secure room with his litter tray and bowls but should not be left alone until he has settled. A warm bed at ground level (a cardboard box will suffice) should also be provided. Once he has had a look round, show him where his litter tray, etc. are. He may be unsettled to begin with so, when not with him, a soft toy or low volume radio might help him feel at ease. As kittens are very inquisitive and love exploring, check for any hazards round the house and be aware that they can squeeze into the smallest of spaces, as many of our new owners have discovered. Block off any gaps between cupboards, etc, screen off open fireplaces and always supervise your kitten if you have an open fire. Keep all windows shut (and toilet seats down) and ensure all wires are protected and out of reach. You will find your kitten will frequently sleep for long periods throughout the day but, when he is awake, he will

Victory and Splash gym users to benefit from refurbishment

Refurbished gyms due to reopen in next few days

Two North Norfolk leisure centres had a fresh look before Christmas thanks to gym refurbishments worth more than £140,000. The gyms at Victory in North Walsham and Splash in Sheringham were refitted with new strength and cardiovascular equipment, an improved layout, and redecoration. The centres are owned by North Norfolk District Council and operated by Places for People Leisure. The refurbishments were funded by the operator.

enjoy short play sessions. Treat him gently and respectfully and give him lots of love and he will grow up to be a happy well adjusted little cat.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

Gremlin, one of the feral kittens If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

Songbird Survival

Eddie, Lynn and the volunteers at Songbird Survival held a special evening at The Lighthouse Inn in Walcott on 4 December when Keith Skipper conducted the draw, making for a very entertaining evening.

Chairman Robert Middleditch and Michael Hope from Songbird Survival also attended.

Organisers would like to take this opportunity to thank local businesses and local people who kindly donated prizes. The total raised was £1,130.

‘It is nice to know that local people can be so generous’ said Eddy ‘especially local residents who have given items for our table top sales which we hold throughout the year. We must also thank Steve at The Lighthouse Inn for all his help and support. Thank you everyone who comes to our sales and gives us their support’.

Victory gym reopened on Thursday 17 December, following a £68,000 refurbishment and a seven day closure. Splash gym reopened on Tuesday 22 December, following a £76,000 refurbishment and an eight day closure. Fakenham Sports and Fitness Centre, also owned by North Norfolk District Council and operated by Places For People Leisure, underwent a £108,000 refurbishment programme in November 2014, well received by users.

Cllr Becky Palmer, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture at North Norfolk District Council said “I’m delighted that both gyms have been refurbished and improved. “The two centres are very popular with a wide range of age groups and they contribute greatly to the health and wellbeing of the community.” Stuart Jardine, contract manager at Places for People Leisure, said “Our aim is to create active places and healthy people, and keeping our facilities updated is a priority. We hope this investment is a clear sign of our commitment in providing the best possible service, not just to local residents but also to seasonal visitors. We are so pleased that we will have both refurbishments ready to carry out those New Year’s resolutions in January.”

Find out more and join online at www.placesforpeopleleisure.org or follow the centres on Facebook and Twitter.

Cosmetic Surgery and Non-surgical treatments for 2016

The popularity of cosmetic procedures is on the rise. A high proportion of men and women would consider surgical or non-surgical procedures today.

There have been amazing advances in technology and our understanding of age related changes allowing us to achieve results with minimal recovery time.

At the same time there has been a shift in attitudes. Stretched artificial appearing facelifts of the 70s are out. Patients today want a natural, fuller and fresher appearance.

We also now understand that bigger, more invasive surgeries do not necessarily provide better results. These are associated with prolonged recovery periods and higher risks. A lot of doctors and patients are moving away from these. Today more than 80% of cosmetic procedures are non-surgical or minimally invasive and this number is going to rise further as newer and better treatments come along.

Let us look at what is driving this change... We now know that facial ageing is more than just sagging skin. In the past you would have major facelift under general anesthesia. You would bruise and swell for weeks and you would look tighter but not necessarily younger! We now know that the face deflates due to loss of soft tissue such as fat and even bones. We also know that skin quality also suffers. So now we address all these aspects of facial ageing. Lasers have come of age and can repair and rejuvenate the skin. Soft tissue fillers or even fat can replace lost volume and if we do these two treatments we don’t need major facelift. A less invasive alternative is

just as good and provides more natural appearance. We can now do facelifts under pure local anaesthesia with no to minimal bruising and no to minimal recovery period depending on the extent of surgery.

For body contouring also you do not need general anaesthesia. It can be carried out purely under local anaesthesia with fine instruments while you can be listening to music. You can also utilize the removed fat and recycle it for enhancing other body parts such as hands, breasts or buttocks. Possibilities are endless.

For more information log on to our website www.coltishallclinic.co.uk or call us on 0800 0430737. We have full range of non-surgical to surgical options to choose from.

‌ and they all lived happily ever after

You may remember seeing in the last issue of the Sheringham Independent the picture of a handsome tabby cat who had for several months been living rough on the allotments in Weston Terrace.

Well thanks to his picture he was spotted by his owner and they have been reunited after more than a year.

The family moved some time ago from Beeston Road to the Sheringham High School area and Toby the cat made his way back to the allotments which had been his old haunt.

Cats are territorial and sometimes do try to return to an area, whereas dogs are normally much more attached to people and will stay wherever their human is.

Toby had survived by eating bread and table scraps put out daily by a Weston Terrace resident for the birds, and he found shelter in her windowless run down shed. This story has a happy ending but so many like this do not. I cannot emphasise enough the need to have your cats

Shortthorn’s

Toby reunited with Sarah his delighted owner

and dogs microchipped. It is painless and quick and means lost pets can be reunited with their owners by passing a small detector over the animal's neck at the site of the chip. It saves a lot of heartache.

I think Toby probably got a microchip for Christmas!

M&D Butchers were delighted to win the 2015 Norwich Food and Drink Christmas Window competition.

HOLT & DISTRICT PROBUS CLUB - FLYING FOR FUN

At the December meeting of Holt and District Probus Club, after a very satisfactory Christmas lunch, members settled down to listen to John Mangan talk about Flying for Fun.

John explained that there are several types of pilot including the ones that fly you to your summer holidays, the ones that fly military aircraft (some faster than others) and those, like himself, who fly for fun.

Then, the various kinds of aircraft - apart from commercial and military machines, everything from a tiny microlight carrying (usually) just one person to a larger plane such as a 6 seater Cessna. In between are acrobatic planes (such as the Pitts Special), powered gliders and many others.

John outlined the licensing formalities and costs of flying (the cost being much reduced if you form a group with other owner-fliers) and showed still and moving pictures of many examples. The first movie he showed was not really flying at all. A few weeks before he had joined the brave souls who ‘flew’ from the top of Happisburgh Lighthouse in the charity Zip Wire challenge - several Probus Club members had sponsored John for this for which he offered his thanks.

Holt and District Probus Club meets at The Feathers, Holt, on the first Thursday in every month and enquiries about membership (or a trial visit - visitors are most welcome) should be made to Secretary Eric Dear on 01263 823207.

KELLING PROBUS CLUB - DECEMBER MEETING

The Kelling Probus Club Held their December meeting at The Links Hotel West Runton. Forty seven members and wives enjoyed a festive meal. They were welcomed by Chairman Michael Bennett and Vice Chairman David Vickery.

After the meal a quiz with festive theme was set by secretary Ken Murray - everyone enjoyed the quiz but struggled to find the right answers. David Vickery then proposed a toast to the 'ladies', the response and thanks for the invitation was given by Ann Whittington who noted that Probus was one way of getting husbands out of the house once a month!

The Club meets on the third Thursday of each month at The Dales Hotel Upper Sheringham. Membership is open to all retired professional and businessmen . If you would like to give the club a try, ring John Whittington on 01263 820333.

Please note we are purely a social gathering once a month with a speaker after a two course lunch - there is no fund raising obligation unlike other clubs of a similar nature.

Woodfields' sports teams newly kitted out

Woodfields' sports teams have been kitted out in a smart yellow and blue strip thanks to a generous donation from the Craig Prior Memorial Fund. Roger Palmer, a leading light in the fundraising charity, visited the school on 3 December for a ‘kit inspection' and to pass over a cheque for £660. The fund was originally started in memory of local amateur rugby player Craig Prior, who died tragically young, to buy a scrummage machine for the rugby team that he was passionate about. Craig's brother, Roger and his fellow fundraisers quickly realised that they could achieve so much more for the local sporting community through their continued efforts, and by these means enrich the sporting experiences of many youngsters, including those with disabilities, in and around Craig's home patch. The money was raised in a variety of ways. Roger's wife ran the Norwich half marathon, completing the course in a very commendable 1 hour 57 minutes and 48 seconds! There was also a flower exhibition at Fakenham Salvation Army Flower Festival, the proceeds from the sale of badges and wrist bands and a sponsorship scheme in conjunction with Fakenham Academy. Matthew Smith, Business Manager at Sheringham Woodfields, expressed his thanks to Roger and his fundraisers saying "We have many sporting teams within the school, including football, basketball and athletics, all of whom will be proud to wear their new kit. We were also able to invest some additional money on PE and outdoor play equipment. We rely on gifts such as this to supply the ‘added extras' that are so nice to have, and our pupils and staff all say a big ‘Thanks' to Roger and the Craig Prior Memorial Fund."
