New playgrounds for Sheringham Woodfields School

Sheringham Woodfields School is going into the New Year with exciting plans to redevelop its play areas.

The existing school playgrounds are over 12 years old and showing signs of tiredness. Importantly, they are failing to meet the needs of all the pupils. However, adding items to the layout as it is now would present difficulties. As the school has funds and grants that have been accumulated over the past few years that must be used for capital expenditure, the decision has been made to bite the bullet and undertake this extensive project.

New Puzzle Page & Competition inside this issue

"In addition to the grant support we are receiving, we owe a debt of gratitude to businesses and groups in North Norfolk, who have donated money to us. I would especially like to thank the East of England Co-operative Society, Crayford and Abbs, the Sheringham Shantymen, Royal Cromer Golf Club and Sheringham Methodist Church all of which have supported us in our aim to give our pupils a fantastic play and learning experience," says Matthew Smith, Business Manager at Sheringham Woodfields School.

New playgrounds for Sheringham Christmas in Sheringham On 25 December 70+ ladies and gentlemen sat down to a two course Woodfields School Christmas Lunch at St. Andrew's Church. Continued from front cover...

He goes on "We must also add to our list of staunch supporters, the Friends of Sheringham Woodfields School, who give freely of their time and have raised £8,000 for the project, and finally the school's own charity shop, Woodfields Den, which has contributed a mighty £20,000 to swell the coffers. Without the efforts of all these organisations and businesses, the project would be unable to go ahead. Thank you everyone."

Playdale Playgrounds has been chosen to develop the project, which is scheduled to begin with the first stage development at the start of the Easter school holiday. The rest will be undertaken during the May half term and summer holiday, and be completed in time for the start of the new school year in September 2016. Once fully open, pupils will be able to enjoy a new and exciting playground with fun and challenges accessible to everyone. The different play areas will incorporate shade and shelter, water and sand play and many more activities for pupils in wheelchairs.

"We wanted to involve the whole school in the planning process, so we have taken steps to ask questions of both pupils and staff about colour schemes, equipment, the play value in the varying areas, and above all, whether we have missed anything vital," Matthew finishes by saying. "Everyone now has ownership of this very exciting project."

This event would not have been achievable without a small band of volunteers, who fetched and took guests home on the day, served the food and cleared and tidied the hall afterwards. The Committee would like to thank you all very much for giving up your usual Christmas Day activities.

Also a big thank you to Hastings, D&M Butchers and Nobby's for food donations and to the North Norfolk Classic Car Association for their cash donation which went a long way to pay for the meal .

Thank you all once again, Connie Burchett, Chairman, Christmas in Sheringham

Dear Margaret,

May I take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone who came to the Town Carol Concert in St. Peter's Church, Sheringham on Thursday 17 December. It was so good to see the church completely full, and there was a great atmosphere - everyone was in fine voice for the carol singing!

Thank you to the choirs, special guests, Ministers, and Sheringham Salvation Army Band for taking part, and of course thanks to Rev. Christian Heycocks and St. Peter's Church for hosting the event, and The Sheringham Independent for helping with publicity. The wonderful total of just over £1,400 was raised, and the proceeds will be shared between The Stable Door Housing Association, and Beach Life 2016, the Sheringham Churches Together summer beach mission. Yours sincerely, Paul Winterbourne Bandmaster, Sheringham Salvation Army Band

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS? SOLICITORS?

“It’s a common misconception that a larger firm is better.”

I am Clare Mayell and I run Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor, qualified Family Mediator and Collaborative solicitor.

As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. The common misconception is that a larger local firm or city firm is better but this is incorrect. A client just pays more.

When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I am one of the few solicitors that offffers a free first appointment so that clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision.

I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.

“I would say to any potential client to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.

Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 01263 823465 0 1263 8 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk

Aldborough Panto

This year's performance, The Three Musketeers (and D'Artagnan) is the 23rd panto put on by the Aldborough Players. The script author and director is the youngest so far, the 21 year old James Green.

James, a teaching assistant at the village school, saw a number of friends leave the area for university, and decided he needed new challenges to fill the gap. After taking a small part last year, he decided to write his own. It is very much a family affair with his dad Duncan, and sister Maisie taking leading roles, and mum Sharon organising costumes. There is a cast of 23 which includes the young (10 years) and the not so young.

Laura Williamson, who lives in West Runton plays the lead role of Geraldine Grainger. Laura who works in Horsham St. Faith and has performed in many productions locally, said that it was her ambition to play the role of Geraldine Grainger.

The script was written by Ian Gower and tells the story of a small Oxfordshire village Parish Council, who are awaiting the arrival of their new vicar. They are amazed, and not altogether pleased when they find that a woman vicar has been appointed. Will Rev Geraldine Grainger be able to make her mark in Dibley or will the eccentricities of the inhabitants of the village prove too much for her? All will be revealed in this rib-achingly funny production.

The production is at the Sheringham Little Theatre from 23 to 27 February and tickets are on sale from the box office on 01263 822347 or online from www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com Ticket prices are £10 and £11. 8

The panto suggests links between the French royal family and this corner of Norfolk and will be great fun for all the family. Performances at Aldborough Community Centre are at 7.30pm on 3 to 6 February. Tickets are available from Aldborough village post office and cost from £5 to £7, with half price tickets for children. Please shake off those winter blues, come along and support one of your local community events. Sheringham Independent 432 January 30th 2016

North Norfolk Photographic Society

An eccentric lady visited North Norfolk Photographic Society on 6 January.

That lady is Barbie Lindsay - a very distinguished and successful photographer, well known for her creative images.

Barbie’s talk and show was titled ’Creative Photography’; she

specialises in combining and altering images, producing as the finished product a truly artistic picture, though sometimes one that is a bit ‘off the wall’!

The holder of several photographic distinctions, Barbie Lindsay is totally addicted to her art to the extent that she works for a photography company as well.

She started by showing a photograph of herself wearing a T-shirt with Genius printed across the front - a reference to just one of the photo groups that she has espoused. Also wearing one of her pairs of extraordinary shoes and a top hat on her bright red hair! Then there were pictures of a lavish dress, which appeared in different colours in different locations, photographs of Cleveden Pier all warped and twisted and many others.

Children Go Free at Bure Valley Railway!

The Teddy Bear Express at the Bure Valley Railway returns for the children’s half term holiday from 13th to 21st February 2016. The Railway’s resident bear will take charge again at Aylsham Station to ensure nine days of fun for all the family!

The vote of thanks was proposed by Bill Day, who spoke of the incredible originality and quality of the images that had been shown.

Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are held on the first and third Wednesdays each month from 7.30 pm in the Holt Community Centre. For further details please contact the club Secretary, Judith Wells at secretary.nnps@gmail.com.

Steam Trains to the Norfolk Broads

Trains will operate from both Aylsham and Wroxham stations three times per day. A children’s competition to see how many teddy bears can be spotted on the train journey, a colouring corner and a decorated Whilstlestop Café add to this teddy bear themed event.

To make this truly a children’s event, the Railway is giving free travel to every child when accompanied by a fare-paying adult (maximum 2 children per adult). No prior booking required.

PS. Don’t forget to bring your own teddy so that the Railway Bear is not lonely!

Sheringham Independent 432 January 30th 2016

A New Year brings with it new hopes and maybe new ears; for new pleasures and revisiting previous delights...

The 2016 FALCON Concerts held at St Andrews Church in Holt, arranged to help raise funds for FALCON (the North Norfolk based arts initiative - Facilitating Arts and Literature for the Children of Norfolk) and St Andrew's Church Development Fund, are upon us once more. Performers once again are drawn from the pool of young professionals, all ex-pupils from the Purcell School (an international school for young musicians of exceptional talent), who very generously come for expenses only.

And what a wonderful range of concerts are on offer, including, for the first time, a Chamber Orchestra concert, in early July, conducted by the internationally acclaimed conductor Peter Stark. This concert is part of an exciting and ambitious School’s Concert project (which, funding permitting, includes a wider programme of related events and activities – composition workshops, children’s art and poetry workshops, exhibitions and competitions, visits to their local libraries), all on the theme of ‘Carnival of the Animals’. And all of which are being developed in partnership with Holt Festival, 5 local Primary School’s (Langham, Holt, Gresham Village, Roughton and The Belfry in Overstrand), the North Norfolk Library

Service, the acclaimed local poet and prize winning children’s author Kevin CrossleyHolland and St. Andrews Church.

The series of concerts began in 2012 and without exception, as anyone who has attended will testify, each has been wonderful,

Saturday, 6 February at 6.30 pm when Juliana Myslov, an exciting young harpist, will be performing a programme with which she has recently toured the Netherlands and recorded on CD. It is a programme, called 'Carpe Noctem', designed to reflect aspects of the night, both its stillness and amazing vibrancy. mesmerising and delighting, both old and young, who have been persuaded to pass through St Andrews welcoming doors.

Norman Lamb calls for fair funding for rural areas

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb has called on the government to ensure that rural areas get a fair deal on funding.

Earlier this month Mr Lamb co-sponsored a debate in Parliament that called for Council Tax payers in rural areas to be protected from the impact of cuts in government funding for local councils.

“Urban councils get more in government support than rural areas despite the strains being placed on the delivery of vital services by funding cuts. I am particularly worried about the impact on the provision of care. The government risks penalising older people and those most in need of support and many care providers are already struggling to provide the high quality service that people deserve on the funds available,” says Mr Lamb.

The government announced an increase in the Rural Services Delivery Grant before Christmas but this only provides half of the extra support that campaigners say is needed.

Congratulations to Sam Lowe and all the brave folk who plunged into a freezing North Sea on New Years Day for charity.

Robert Plumb, who had already raised £2000 from previous events, was delighted with the additional £260 that was raised by the swimmers on the day. 12

He said “the money will go to Arthritis Research. I met up with the swimmers at The Links Country Park Hotel, where another annual charity golfing tournament was taking place, so it was a brilliant start to the year.”

“I will do all I can to help this worthy cause and I look forward to next year’s event. Well done to all concerned, keep up the good work.”

I have been cut out of a Will – What can I do?

As a general rule of thumb, people in England and Wales can leave their property in their Wills to whoever they wish. After all, it is the whole point of going to the cost of having a Will in the first place. The courts can decide if a Will is valid if the deceased’s capacity at the time of making the Will was impaired or if it can be proved they were unduly influenced by another to leave their estate to them entirely or in greater measure than they would have done. However, there may be nothing that can be done to overturn the Will itself where these cannot be shown to have occurred.

There may however be another protection for someone close to the deceased where they have been cut out of the Will. The Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependents) Act 1975 allows, in certain circumstances, for payments to close family to be made out of the estate despite what the intentions of the deceased were in their Will. It is also possible that promises that were made by the deceased may be enforceable.

Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependents) Act 1975 - The Act makes it possible for close family and dependents who are not adequately provided for financially under a Will, to apply to the Courts for an order that they should receive reasonable provision from the deceased’s estate.

A spouse that is cut out of a will can generally expect to receive a considerable payment. The Courts are likely to order that provision should be made that is reasonable for the surviving spouse to have, whether or not the spouse is financially secure or not. Children of the deceased, or another dependent relative, might get a lesser payment that is sufficient to ensure that their everyday needs are paid for.

It is possible, and in fact quite regular, for these types of claims to be brought by several different people against the same estate. This is especially likely to be the case in disputes involving a longrunning sibling rivalry and subsequent fallout or a family argument of perhaps the elderly widow(er) and the fresh on the scene, younger love interest.

Under the Act, the Courts are required to take into account many factors in deciding whether to make an order for provision of the disappointed dependent and if so, the amount that the dependent requires from the estate to be provided for adequately.

Even where such an order is made by the Courts, the Will, as created and signed by the deceased, remains valid. After the terms of the order have been satisfied, the Will continues to apply to the rest of the estate subject to any further order of the Courts. This is true of all gifts under the Will and all powers provided to the Executor(s) of it.

Proprietary Estoppel - A person may be granted relief where there was a “representation or assurance made to the claimant pertaining to an interest in identified property; reasonable reliance on it by the claimant; and detriment to the claimant in consequence of that reliance. The claimant has to show that it would be unconscionable for the person who made the assurance or representation to go back on his word, and deprive the claimant of the proprietary interest he had been led to expect. In plain English, this means where the deceased made a promise to someone that the Will would leave them something, but then the Will did not in fact do so. If the person acted on that promise, and suffered a loss, then they can seek to enforce the promise to receive the property in spite of the Will.

Take for example the model of this family business.

If the father is the sole owner and has four children. Children 1-3 each leave home and pursue extremely successful careers in the city. Child 4, however, enters the family business at 16 when he leaves school and remains there his whole life, without taking a wage and living with his parents on the assurance from his father that the business would pass on to him. Father dies and the Will leaves the family business to all four children in equal shares. Children 1-3 are delighted because on top of the city salary, they now have a 25% share of a reasonably successful local business. Child 4 has devoted his entire life to the business without taking a salary and ends up receiving the same share of the business as his brothers and sisters. The rules of equity determine that this is not fair and Child 4 could reasonably make a claim for the entire 100% share of the business.

Again, the Will remains valid, but the specific property in question no longer forms part of the estate. These are just two of many potential issues that may arise with the passing of a loved one. At Clapham & Collinge we can provide you with all of the necessary information, support and legal advice on Will disputes and how they can be resolved. It’s been a fantastic first few months for Sarah and Ian as the new owners of Marmalade’s

The new Marmalade’s team have been working hard over the Autumn to create a delicious, fresh, lunch menu which is proving to be more and more popular as the winter draws on and available Thursday-Saturday. “We’ve been so lucky, the local community and customers have been so warm and supportive. We’re very grateful for all the feedback we’ve had, we really think we’ve found our feet now” Says Sarah, “I’m delighted to announce that we now have a brand new coffee machine which uses gorgeous ground coffee and we have a special offer price for desserts at lunch time. We use local Norfolk produce wherever possible, from the ice cream up to the delicious fresh mussels and we can accept credit/debit cards now too! We’re also very proud of our newly awarded 5* hygiene rating.” Coming up in February Marmalade’s will be introducing some exciting events such as ‘Steak night’ on Friday the 26th of February and a special offer for Mother’s day too.

Although usually closed on Sundays, Marmalade’s will be open for lunch and dinner on Valentine’s day and with it’s cosy atmosphere, it’s the perfect setting for a romantic meal.

Regular customers will know Marmalade’s had a ‘slight issue’ with BT in September, but now and you can reach the restaurant for bookings and information on 01263 822830 once more.

So whether for lunch, dinner or just a coffee and a chat, let Marmalade’s warm you up this winter.

St Andrew's Ladies Association

Our first 2016 meeting welcomed Maureen and friends who talked to us about prison letter writing worldwide.

She also runs a small group of letter writers once a month in her house. There used to be 20 people but the number has decreased to about five, and she would welcome anyone interested.

She explained how countries imprison Christians when a Church is gaining in popularity- for example, a Communist country etc. She explained that the ten worst countries in which to be a Christian include North Korea, Sudan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Cuba and Nigeria, China, India. Maureen is associated with ‘Tear Fund’ and has fund raising afternoons in her house - all work and no pay - children trapped in modern day slavery. Just £12 per month could protect children from trafficking - what a cruel world some children live in.

We were asked to sign two cards to be sent to prisoners. She recently heard from a man now living in America, who sent her a letter and photocopy of a Christmas card she had sent to him in prison 17 years ago – it had meant so much to him. Food for thought for us all.

Further meetings are as follows :9 February - Fun with flowers - Jill Tullie 16 February - Committee Meeting 23 February - NO MEETING 8 March - Blickling Hall -Jan Brookes-Bullen Advance notice : 12 April - Fashion Show by M & Co Cromer

Call for Sites - New Local Plan for North Norfolk North Norfolk District Council has started the process of preparing a new Local Plan. The Plan will introduce new planning policies, which will be applied in the determination of planning applications and will also include new development sites to address the development needs of the District for the period 2016-2036. As part of the preparation of the Plan, the Council is carrying out a ‘Call for Sites’.

This provides an opportunity for developers, landowners, individuals and other interested parties to put forward potential sites within North Norfolk District for development. Any sites which are suggested will then be subject to a detailed appraisal process by the Council. The Council will then publish preferred options for consultation. The final site selections will then be included in a draft Plan which will be subject to independent examination before the new Plan can be adopted. Cllr Sue Arnold, Cabinet Member for Planning, said “This is an important stage in the process of preparing the new Plan and the Council is keen to hear from as many people as possible so that we can consider the options that may be available not just for new housing but also other types of development.”

The Call for Sites registration form and guidance notes are available on the council’s website at www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/callforsites and all forms should be returned on or before 31 May 2016.

Here at Age Concern North Norfolk we are trying to eradicate loneliness amongst the over 55s in our area and have been running a befriending service for 10 years now. We are funded by the National Lottery with an aim at doing just that.

But to help us achieve this goal we desperately need more volunteers to become befrienders. We currently have a long waiting list for people who would like a befriender and many, without more volunteers, will have to potentially wait for a long time to be matched with someone. We want that to change in 2016.

Please do something wonderful this New Year and give someone who

East Anglian Band Certainly Not Scruffy or Unkempt Musically!

The folk-rock band from Essex Mawkin have been firm supporters and favourites of North Norfolk’s ‘Folk on the Pier’ festival for over ten years and during that time have progressed in leaps and bounds musically. Both individually and collectively the members of the band have collaborated and played with many of English-Folks’ top names as well as releasing an impressive catalogue of recordings, including their highly acclaimed new album ‘The Ties That Bind.’

The band’s name is derived from an Old English word for ‘scruffy or unkempt person’. Scott Butler the producer of ‘Folk on the Pier’ says ‘when they first played the event in 2004, they were indeed a bunch of unkempt, though musically excellent even then, bunch of lads with great humour. Since then their music has progressed to a very high level and there is certainly nothing scruffy about their playing, or indeed their appearance nowadays. Frankly they are one of Brit-folk’s brightest new guns!’

‘An Evening With Mawkin’ at Sheringham Little Theatre offers a blistering 5-piece band fusing folk, blues and rock firmly on the cutting edge of the contemporary music scene and all the verve and mystique of ancient folk music traditions from across the globe. Expect rousing songs of rebellion sung by brothers David Delarre (Eliza Carthy, Tred) and fiddler James Delarre (Saul Rose and James Delarre, Topette) all underpinned by the virtuosic bellowing of Nick Cooke’s melodeon (Kate Rusby, Jim Moray) and a solid rhythm section with Danny Crump on bass and Lee Richardson (Diverted, Extreme Music) on drums.

is lonely back their life by lifting their moral and, for many, giving them a reason to go on living. I did this before I became employed by our charity and, like so many of our wonderful existing volunteers, I got so much pleasure out of seeing another person being made so happy by a simple act, such as making a cup of tea and listening to their stories.

Your visit may last for an hour or two, once or twice a week, or fortnightly; whatever time you are free to give and that you and your new friend mutually agree upon. You may play games, reminisce, and help to read books or just have a good old chat over that aforementioned cuppa.

Having that someone you know and get along with in your life and the feeling you have as you look forward to seeing them can make the world of difference to a befriended person and the volunteer. It can be the difference between the befriended getting poorly and or falling ill and them having a happy, fulfilling quality of life. Made only all the more important this time of year as the cold days and dark nights can often bring the gloomy thoughts of loneliness to many.

Bring a little light back to someone’s life in 2016.

If you would like to become a volunteer, then please contact us on the details below as you could be making a real difference to someone’s life in the year ahead.

We have quiz sheets, in conjunction with G.I.F.T (Good Intentions Fundraising Team), to test your little grey cells. Pick up a form from our Day Centre - it is only £1 to enter and you can enter any time up to 28 February. Prizes available.

All Proceeds go towards Age Concern North Norfolk and the Grand Order of Water RatsThank you, Adam, Administrator, Age Concern North Norfolk 01263 823126 ageuknn.admin@xlninternet.co.uk

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Gremlin, the little kitten featured in the last article, has now found a loving new home in North Walsham with her brother Scallywag. We have now taken into care 32 kittens from the colony and know there is at least one more to be caught. Some of the kittens have had contact with the person caring for the adult cats and most have reacted positively and quickly to the people involved in their care. Another two of the kittens, Malificent and Rioja, have also left for a loving new home.

As well as taking the kittens into care, we have also taken in 3 cats whose owners have sadly died. Boco, is a really big, but beautiful, black and white lad and his sister is a very pretty tortie girl. These cats are about six years old and, apart from Boco needing to lose some weight, they appear to be in good condition. However, they not yet been to the vets for a check up. The other little cat is ginger and is quite old, about 17 years our vets believe. She had been outside since her owner died so it is quite a relief to have her in care. At present we are waiting for the results of blood tests to confirm the vets concerns about her general health. However, we soon realised that this dear little cat is blind. On arrival she was disorientated but, by confining her to her housing unit with all facilities to hand, she soon settled down and is very much hap-

pier. She also just loves attention, which was obvious to David, her vet, when trying to examine her and listen to her heart. Once her health problems have been resolved, she will be adopted by one of our fosterers who, having lost two of her old cats last year, was looking to give a home to another old cat. This special little girl has certainly landed on her paws.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to Recent arrival, Boco help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

MARE AND FOAL RESCUED FROM HADDISCOE

On Monday 11 January, Redwings’ Senior Field Officer Julie Harding attended a field near Haddiscoe following a call to the charity’s welfare line. On attending the site, a piebald cob mare was discovered with a very sickly foal at foot. Requiring immediate veterinary attention and with the help of Redwings’ Senior Welfare Veterinary Surgeon Nic de Brauwere and RSPCA Inspector Ben Kirby, the foal was removed with the mare and taken to Redwings’ Reception Centre. “It was essential that the foal was taken to a safe environment for treatment,” reflected Julie, “and we couldn’t have done this without nearby welfare charity Horse Rescue Fund who we called upon for help in transporting the horses to our Reception Centre. “They helped us load the two relatively unhandled horses, drove them to our centre and even stayed to assist our vets in setting up the treatment for the horses. Their help with this urgent case was invaluable and we cannot thank them enough”. Once at Redwings’ Reception Centre, Nic – together with Welfare Veterinary Surgeon Nicola Berryman – provided care to the mare and foal through the night. “We’re very concerned about this young foal and diagnosis for his current condition is underway,” commented Nic.

KELLING PROBUS CLUB

Kelling Probus Club held its January lunch time meeting at 'The Dales Hotel' Upper Sheringham on 21st January. After a welcome by Club Chairman Michael Bennett the club stood in silence to remember two members John Neller, and Malcolm Bell who had died in the past month,Terry Penrose and Ken Murray each paid a tribute to them John in fact was a founder member of the club. Twenty members and a guest were present. After the usual tasty lunch the club was addressed by Andrew Hyatt a member of the club and a recently retired dentist. Andrew talked about his career in science and dentistry, he told the club that for the past 30 years he had been an endodontist that is a dentist who specializes in root canal treatment. He emphasized that his chosen specialty was a very accurate and long process for treating diseased teeth, he showed the club pictures of all the various processes involved and stated that treatment was not always completely successful. Andrew then talked about all the problems for patients, and dentists in ensuring treatment worked. He was thanked for his very interesting talk br Gordon Little, and applauded by the club for his efforts. The Club meets at The Dales each month for lunch and a speaker. For details of the club contact John Whittington on 01263 820333. We are always pleased to welcome prospective members. 18

This case comes just months after a similar mare and foal rescue by Redwings late last year. In October 2015, the charity rescued a mare with a six-week-old foal at foot found on farmland near Harleston. The pair – named Star and Rocket by the Sanctuary – were both extremely thin and Star was in such a severe state of neglect that she sadly died less than two weeks after her rescue. Investigations into this recent rescue are ongoing, but if you would like to help support Redwings’ care for this foal and his mother, you can donate by texting “HORS30 £5” to 70070 or visit www.redwings.org.uk.

Lost Cat

Please help me find Bruce who stowed away in a van and ended up lost in Cromer miles from his home in Reepham. Bruce was last seen on 7 January at the Norfolk Homes development, Park View, Sayer Crescent, Roughton Road, Cromer, heading towards Amazonia. He is a 20 month old neutered tom, white and black with a ‘beauty spot’ of black fur on the right hand side of his face. He is microchipped.

Any sightings please call Carolyn on 01603 870850 or 07920035405 Thank you.

Romantic Jazz and Back to Blue Note

The Norfolk Jazz Quartet has built its reputation around playing swinging jazz standards and music from the Great American Song Book and will draw on this repertoire to provide a programme of romantic music for a St. Valentine’s dinner at Woodland Holiday Park in Trimingham on Saturday 13 February. The food fare will be a three course meaL (£29.95) and you can burn off the calories by dancing to this delightful quartet. The music starts at 8.00 p.m. and the band will be Tim Densham (clarinet and saxophones), Peter Gregory (guitar), Liz Underdown (bass) and Vic Brown (drums). Tables can be reserved by telephoning 01263 579208.

Blue Note is probably the most famous independent jazz recording label of all time and the band at The Hub (Sheringham Little Theatre) on Sunday 28 February will draw on the Blue Note catalogue for its programme. The line-up will be an outstanding group of local musicians who were extremely well received Norfolk Jazz Quartet when they played at The Hub last year. Martin Eaton (tenor saxophone), Chris Cooper (piano), Andy Doyle (bass) and Rob Masters (drums). Music starts at 7.30 p.m. Tickets are £8.50 from the theatre box office (Tel: 01263 822347) or on-line at www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

Before either of these dates, however, remember that you can see the Norfolk Dixieland Jazz Band play its regular Monthly Sunday date at The Goat Inn, Long Road, Skeyton, on 7 February from 1.30 pm. If you want a table for lunch it is essential to book. Tel: 01692 538600.

Voters asked to refresh their signatures

Letters will be sent this month to people who have voted via postal vote or postal proxy vote for more than five years asking them to refresh their signature.

More than 800 letters will be sent to voters in the district who have been voting by postal vote or postal proxy vote for more than five years asking them to return a form with a fresh signature.

Returning the completed form by 19 February will ensure that they will remain eligible to vote in future elections without having to apply to vote in this way again. Reminder notices will be sent to those who have not returned their form by 9 February.

People are being urged to complete the form before the deadline date 19 February or their right to vote by post will be removed and they will have to reapply to vote in this way.

Cllr Judy Oliver, Cabinet Member for Democratic Services at North Norfolk District Council said “I would urge people who do exercise their democratic right to vote in this way to return the form if they receive one.

“If people who have been voting by postal proxy or postal vote for more than five years want to carry on voting in this way please return the form rather than having to reapply later on.”

The work is being done to help prevent postal vote fraud and to reflect the natural change in someone’s signature over a five year period.

If people have any questions about the process please contact Electoral Services at register@north-norfolk.gov.uk or call on 01263 516046/516317.

Sheringham Museum Volunteers Remember Olive Edis Sixty years ago this month, Olive Edis, one of the most famous residents of Sheringham passed away at the age of 79. She died in London but her ashes were interred with her husband Cambridge academic Edwin Henry Galsworthy, a cousin of the novelist John Galsworthy, in a family plot in Sheringham cemetery. Most famous locally for her portraits of

Sheringham fishermen, Edis was also the first female war photographer in the country during the First World War. A large amount of her work is held at the National Portrait Gallery, Imperial War Museum, Cromer and in Sheringham.

With no surviving immediate relatives in the local area, the Sheringham Museum Volunteers felt that it was important to remember the life of such an important woman in the history of the town and so spent a day tidying up the weeds that had grown over the grave and then placed a wreath and bunch of lilies in her memory. Prior to undertaking this work, they sought the permission of Sheringham Town Council, custodians of the cemetery, and tracked down one of the few living relatives. The Sheringham Museum is currently undertaking major extension works to the museum building and hopes to create a permanent display of some of the pieces of her work in the collection in one of the new spaces upon its reopening in April.

Nearly there - junction at Felbrigg A148/B1436

After over eight years of campaigning by the Steps to Safety group, acknowledgement of the need for a roundabout at this important, frustrating and dangerous junction has been made by Norfolk County Council Highways Dept.

Their costing estimate is £552,000 but they are unable to meet the entire costs from their own funds and are seeking help to cover the shortfall, which after pledges received from local town and parish councils, the district council and the National Trust, is in the region of £107,000. In order to safeguard the monies committed by NNC, work needs to start fairly soon.

During the past two years surveys undertaken by the Steps team, both from the public and local businesses, showed overwhelming support for a roundabout at this junction.

We are now seeking monetary pledges in order to close the funding gap. 24

We are not asking for money at this stage but pledges, which will only be called in when the project is ready to start. If you would like to see a roundabout at this junction please consider pledging now.

The easiest way is through our web site www.felbriggroundabout.com, which has a lot of information on the project or to me Sue.arnold@talktalk.net.

Please give this your URGENT CONSIDERATION. If we are unable to realise these additional funds there is a real possibility the commitment from NNC will be withdrawn.

Yours sincerely, Sue Arnold Chair of Steps to Safety Campaign District Councillor for Roughton Ward (Felbrigg, Roughton, Southrepps and Thorpe Market) Sheringham Sheringham Sheringham Independent Independent Independent 422 432419 January August July22nd 30th 11th 2016 2015
