Co-op will be sadly missed …
Covering Sheringham, the Runtons, Holt and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and North Walsham Times
How sad to hear the Co-op is shutting its doors for the last time. It has been a constant support for the people of Sheringham and the surrounding areas for many years. It will be sadly missed by all.
When running the Sheringham Enhancement Group, SEG approached the East of England Co-op and asked if they would fund some salt bins out of their community fund. After all the correct protocol had been gone through. they duly paid for four yellow salt bins for Sheringham. We spoke with highways and we agreed on the placement of the bins, bin 1 at the top of the slope by the putting green, bin 2 at the junction of Nelson Road & Hillside, bin 3 at the top of Curtis Lane and bin 4 at the corner of Holway Road and Snaefell Park.
SEG had been discussing a Y Station information board on Beeston Bump for a long time. Diane Evans researched the Y station, it took months and a lot of re-adjusting but eventually we got there. Once again, we asked them for funding of the new project - Y Station information board.

Co-op will be sadly missed … Continued from front cover...
With their wonderful generosity for helping the local people, the Co-op again came through with the funds.
They not only donated the monies, but took the time and trouble to send their representative, Angela Weigh their campaign officer and a director of the East of England Co-op and also a staff manager from the local shop for the installations of the salt bins.
Again, for the unveiling of the board the Co-op sent good representation, we had the mayor Tricia Brook and members of SEG present. Judith Millar, Diane Evans and myself took bubbly and some nibbles up the bump and we all had a wonderful grand unveiling of the Y Station Board.
I must thank the Co-op on behalf of the Sheringham Enhancement Group for their generosity towards Sheringham. They will be sorely missed.

New Chairman at North Norfolk UKIP
At North Norfolk UK Independence Party’s recent annual general meeting Jack Smith was elected Chairman, Irene Ramsbotham Secretary. Gina Foster Membership Secretary and David Ramsbotham Treasurer.
Retiring Chairman Terry Comber spoke about the progress that UKIP had made during his five year tenure. Membership of the Branch had increased three fold, two County Councillors had been elected and, most importantly, a referendum on our membership of the European Union had been secured.
Jack Smith was delighted and honoured to be elected Chairman. He spoke of his determination to continue to progress the Party, both locally and nationally in preparation for the vote on the EU.
County Councillor David Ramsbotham said that he was very pleased with Jack Smith’s appointment adding “Jack is only 24 years old – hopefully this will convince everyone that we are not a Party of old fogies but the youngsters of Britain are also keen to protect the future prosperity, security, sovereignty, democracy, culture and way of life of our proud nation”.
To join UKIP please contact Gina Foster on 01263 712810 or e-mail gina.foster2015@gmail.com

MACMILLAN MAMMOTH QUIZ
After a very successful 2015, putting on a variety of plays which played to full houses and much acclaim, Sheringham Players are preparing for another year of drama, mystery, murder, comedy and mayhem.
To set off 2016, their spring production comprises an evening of two one act plays under the title “Practise Makes Perfect” and both are based around events that do not always go according to plan.
The first play, written by Lee Fewitt and directed by Hazel Randall, is entitled ‘Is There Anybody There?’, a drama set in late Victorian London where Mrs Carrington, a blind clairvoyant, summons the spirits for those who are willing to pay. Tonight, however, when one of the party is possessed by the spirit of a murdered girl strange happenings occur, when doors are locked and time stands still. Is it for real or are they being deceived? And is there a link to other murders that have happened in the area? Could any of those present be the suspect, or are there darker forces at work? Who is the killer? Will all be revealed, or will the spirits keep their secrets?
The second play, written by Paul Reakes and directed by Tim Travers, is entitled Bang! You’re Dead! and is a comedy mystery thriller. Lydia and her boyfriend Marcus rehearse the murder of Theo, Lydia’s husband, which they are to commit that evening. When the victim and “perfect witness” arrive all goes according to plan except that the wrong person ends up dead. A ghastly mistake - or are there some deviations from the original plot?
The performance runs from Thursday 17 - Saturday 19 March at Sheringham Little Theatre at 7.30pm and tickets are now available from the Box Office on 01263 822347 priced at £10.

Better Services, Better Value for Money – DWP at Council Offices
Better services and better value for money will result from the Department for Work and Pensions move to North Norfolk District Council’s offices in Holt Road, Cromer.
The 14-strong team moved into the building on Monday 11 January and started to run their services from the Council offices on the same day.
A total of 170m2 office space was created by moving teams within the existing building and reducing the need for storage space. This has enabled the DWP to have their own public waiting area, and for DWP clients to use the Council’s self-serve computers to access services directly.
The DWP’s move from Garden Street offices in Cromer provides an opportunity to bring services together in one location. It will also help to reduce the cost of services by sharing the building.
Cllr John Rest, North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet Member for Assets said “As an authority we have to make the most of the resources we have, especially our offices. I’m delighted to be welcoming the Department for Work and Pensions to our offices in Holt Road.
“We know we need to operate as cost-effectively as possible, and sharing our office space is a good way to generate income and provide customers with a more joined up service. With the public services under one roof my hope is that it will be a lot easier for people to get the support they need.”
Julia Nix, District Manager for the Department for Work and Pensions said “This is my second co location site to move into North Norfolk District Council’s Premises. By moving into the Local Authorities

“The move also represents an excellent opportunity for DWP to build stronger working links with North Norfolk District Council to work together to help our customers move closer to employment and provide a better all-round quality service”.

Green shoots are pushing through the snow Soon the crocuses will show. Bright yellow, mauve and white They will be a welcome sight. Hold a Fish and Chip Supper to help spinal cord injured people rebuild lives after injury Great British Fish and Chip Supper – Friday 20 May Want to eat Fish and Chips, while raising money for charity? Hold a fish and chip supper on Friday 20 May whilst raising awareness of spinal cord injury and supporting SIA’s vital services.
You can hold a fish and chip supper in your own home, at work or hold a larger supper at your local community centre.
SIA will provide a fundraising pack containing hints and tips, recipes, invitations and donation envelopes. By inviting eight friends and asking them to donate an additional £5 means you will raise at least £40 from your supper but we will also give you additional fundraising ideas to raise even more money for SIA.
Just £50 could contribute towards the support from our Peer Support Service for one hour, in a district general hospital or Major Trauma Centre.
Art Exhibition at Hobart Gallery, Blickling Hall
The Norfolk Broads Art Society will be holding their third annual exhibition this year at Blickling Hall Hobart Galleryfrom Wednesday 6 to Sunday 24 April. The gallery will be open every day during this period from 10am until 5pm.
As usual there will be a vibrant mix of art work in a variety of mediums, including oil, watercolour, acrylic, pastel and mixed media. Styles vary from contemporary to traditional with subjects ranging from local scenes to abstract work there is something for everyone, whether you are looking for a present for a friend or relative, or something original to grace your own home. As well as framed art there will also be the opportunity to buy from a wide range of unframed work and prints. Greeting cards will also be on sale.
In 2016 we want to make the batter matter and raise £40,000 from everyone holding suppers. Last year we raised £12,000 from the suppers. The money raised from the suppers will help the Spinal Injuries Association offer support to individuals who become paralysed and their families, from the moment a spinal injury occurs, and for the rest of their lives by providing services and publications, which enable and encourage paralysed people to rebuild lives after spinal cord injury.
Every year in the UK over 1000 people experience a spinal cord injury and there are an estimated 40,000 spinal cord injured people in the UK alone.
Community Fundraising Manager, Elizabeth Wright, says “The Fish and Chip Supper is a wonderful opportunity for a great evening with friends and family. We are also encouraging people who work to hold a Fish and Chip Lunch in their work places to raise even more funds. You may be even a local community group wanting to run a fun evening with your group.
For more information or request a fundraising pack call Elizabeth Wright on 0845 071 4350 or email fundraising@siafishandchips.co.uk or visit www.siafishandchips.co.uk
Come and meet us at the gallery - there is no charge for entry and we welcome everyone even if you just want a chance to browse before meeting friends a coffee in the café below.

Council Gains Gold in International Employers’ Award North Norfolk District Council Achieves Investors in People Gold Award
North Norfolk District Council has been awarded the Investors in People Gold Award for being an excellent employer.
Gold is the highest level of recognition which organisations can achieve and is only given to those that are able to demonstrate a degree of excellence in the way they develop and support their staff.
The international standard has been awarded to the district council following an in-depth assessment carried out in December 2015 in which members of staff were interviewed by two independent assessors.
The report found that the Council had met 180 of 196 indicators and should therefore receive the Investors in People Gold Award. The council had previously been given a ‘bronze’ award by Investors in People in July 2013.
Inspectors praised the Council’s culture of openness and trust, its socially responsible policies and practices, its approach to learning and development of staff and the work of the council’s staff focus group.
The ten areas covered by Investors in People Standard are: • Plan – Business Strategy; Learning and
Development Strategy, People Management Strategy; Leadership and Management Strategy
• Do – Management Effectiveness; Recognition & Reward; Involvement & Empowerment; Learning & Development
• Review – Performance Measurement; Continuous Improvement
Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council said “The Council is committed to providing excellent services which offer value to money for our residents. Ensuring our people are equipped to offer a great customer service is crucial and it’s especially pleasing that the Council’s continual improvement has been recognised by the achievement of Investors in People Gold Award.”
Chief Executive Sheila Oxtoby added “I’m incredibly proud that we’ve achieved this award for the Council and more importantly for the residents and businesses that we serve. I would like to thank all the staff and believe it is well-deserved.”
In the assessors’ letter to the Council they state “The standard is a very challenging one to

Masons help Cromer Charity back on the road
until 1986 when it moved to Sheringham.
The Baring Lodge of Freemasons has presented Cromerbased charity About With Friends, a cheque for £525 to launch the fund to replace their fully-accessible minibus.
About With Friends, who offer people with learning disabilities the chance to lead the lives they choose, run a range of services for people from the age of eight upwards. This includes social activities, respite breaks, supported living, and their ground-breaking Workskills programme where adults with learning disabilities are supported in commercial work ventures.
The current minibus has clocked up more than 90,000 miles over the past six years and is due for replacement. As well as running staff, volunteers and members of the charity around, it is also used in the community to pick up people for the lunch clubs that About With Friends run for the Over 55s and similar events. With a wheelchair lift on the back the minibus is a vital part of the charity’s fleet and will cost about £32,000 to replace so the gift from the Freemasons
It has quietly been a part of the Cromer community and continues to support local and national charities, whilst maintaining its Masonic history and traditions.

is a very welcome start to the fund.
Richard is wearing regalia (a Collar and Apron) borrowed from the Master. Also pictured are Workskills members Keara Dougan, Jonathan Chamberlen and Stuart Phillips.
Baring Lodge now meets at Sheringham Masonic Centre but its roots are very much in Cromer. Why English law is good
Written by Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr
Two recent but very different events have led me to write this article on how lucky we all are to have the English legal system. The first was, prosaically, a seminar on European succession law (in Norwich) and the other was reading an article on current problems with the Indian legal system (in India).
Let me start closest to home. The European Succession Regulations, which came in this August, and to which the UK has not signed up, allow a national of an EU state to choose the law which should govern the administration of their estate upon death. In addition to the forced-heirship rules, other foreign anomalies worth noting are: that marriage does not revoke a Will (including in Scotland, where the birth of a first child can do so); that in Italy lifetime gifts to children must be brought into account in distributing the estate upon death; and, that one can sign to forgo one’s inheritance (never straight-forward in fact and law, especially where some time has elapsed). Whereas one can request that English law applies to ones assets in other EU countries, because many civil law countries do not recognise trusts, seeking to apply an English Will containing a trust to EU assets may be complex and incur a double tax charge.
So, what about India? Well, when the British left India in 1947, amongst the systems and structures that ‘we’ left behind was that of the
English legal system. However, in the 69 years since then there has been much divergence. The legal principles remain but the Indian Courts and the implementation of the decisions, apparently, leave much to be desired. On the principle of ‘justice delayed is justice denied’ the Indian system would appear to be failing. It takes years for a case to be heard and the system has become unwieldy and inefficient. Nine judges sit on cases heard in their Supreme Court and all nine of them give a judgement. Such judgements, when published, are sometimes as long as 900 pages for a single case. As cases take so long to be heard and even longer for the decisions to be enforced, there is a tendency for litigants to take matters into their own hands rather than wait any longer for justice to be delivered.
The English legal system is a high earner for the English economy. Litigants and companies from overseas come here to use our legal systems and our Courts. Rather than the codified rigid laws of Civil Law countries, we have the concept of ‘equity’, which combined with our law of trusts and flexibility in relation to Wills and property management, make our system highly desirable.
Yes, there is much to improve here in England. Our legal system is creaking with antiquated IT in the Courts and the threat of closure of our some Courts (King’s Lynn, being our local

‘Race to Rio’ with Crayford and Abbs
Our objective is to raise over £5,000 between February and the end of April for the Paralympic association in conjunction with a national Nissan Fundraising initiative.
We hope to achieve this by encouraging runners, cyclists and swimmers in North Norfolk (who record their mileages electronically and weekly) to complete in miles, the distance from North Norfolk to Rio - 5,876 miles and then match, via corporate and individual sponsorship a £1 per mile covered to raise over £5,000.
As an incentive for all competing athletes, we have a corporate hospitality box at the O2 Arena during this summer and the highest performing, cyclist, runner and swimmer and their partners, will be invited to join us, in our box, as our guests. We are delighted to confirm that Paralympics
gold medal Swimmer, Jessica-Jane Applegate, from Belton, near Great Yarmouth, will be our ambassador for this event and will be visiting Bodham on the 13th February. Jessica competed in the London 2012 Paralympics and won Gold in the 200m freestyle and came fourth in the 100m backstroke. Her other achievements include the 2012 British disability champion in 200m freestyle and four gold medals at the 2013 British Gas International. We are also delighted to announce local boxer Ryan Walsh, British Featherweight champion, is adding his support to our cause. It is our aim to manage and co-ordinate a fun, rewarding and safe event, whilst raising a minimum of £5,876 for the Paralympic Association. Raising funds for the British Paralympic Association is a fantastic opportunity to make a difference to the ParalympicsGB team and directlycontribute to the performances of
ParalympicsGB athletes in Rio. Not only this, but your money will also go a long way to inspiring a shift in perceptions of disabled people and the things they can achieve.
To also help raise funds, we will be holding a Gala Dinner with a guest speaker and auction at The Links Hotel, West Runton, on the 30th April and tables for this event are now on sale.
For more information on how you can help fundraise for the ‘Race to Rio’ or to book a table at the Gala Dinner, contact Crayford and Abbs on 01263 588160 or visit their website at www.crayfordandabbs.co.uk.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
As well as several more kittens and young adults finding new homes since the last article our two oldest cats Bertie and Belle (12 years young) have also left for pastures new. It is fortunate that over 20 cats and kittens found new homes in January as, although we have been able to take some of the cats in from the waiting list, we need to have the two large pens at Dilham empty for a short while for essential maintenance work. The work should only take a few days so no doubt they will be back in operation by the next article.
Last time, we also mentioned the little blind girl and said that we were waiting the results of blood tests. These have now come back and we were pleased to learn that Rosie (previously Nala) is not suffering from any of the age related illnesses. David believes that the blindness is probably the result of another problem which cannot be treated. She has now settled in her new home and lives in a bedroom with her food and water bowls and litter tray nearby. She quickly found her way round the room and always uses the litter tray. Fortunately, her hearing is still good and she has, on occasion, ventured out of her special place to explore a little further. She is a very happy little cat and just loves all the attention she is now receiving; even though she is quite old and we do not know for how long her new family will have her, we are sure she will get the very best of care and lots of love. As most people who use Lyngate Road are aware, Sharon sells goods to raise money for the cats in care at her gate. Last year, although we mentioned that some articles had been stolen from the stall, she still managed to raise £450 to add to our funds. We would like thank Sharon for all her hard work and also everyone who purchased goods, for their support. Sharon has advised that sales of goods will recommence in earnest once the weather improves. We look forward to your continued support.

We see patients in all age groups, both sexes and gender reassignment cases. We all realise the physical impact of unwanted hair, but when we dig a bit deeper it is quite heart wrenching to hear some stories. Often there is lack of awareness of laser hair removal and how effective it is.

More years to your life, more life to your years Last month Norman Lamb visited North Norfolk Coastal Fitness TLC ( Total Low Impact Conditioning) class at the Lighthouse Church Sheringham, where he took part in some gentle exercises, based around daily maintenance to improve balance, flexibility and strengthen the body.
After the class, Norman had a chat with the members about the importance of exercise in later years and afterwards commented “It was great to meet the North Norfolk Coastal Fitness team at one of their regular fitness sessions last week. I joined them for a TLC class, where individuals with restricted ability
could exercise with ease and without pressure. Exercising both in later life and after operations or illnesses is essential for healthy living”.
One of the group’s members Jean Dean, aged 78, explained how the classes have improved her fitness and balance – ‘The best thing I ever did. I struggled with balance for seven years. It is the only class thst has helped me and enabled me to walk more than I have done for many years’.
North Norfolk Coastal Fitness offers two classes a week at the Lighthouse Church, Cromer Road,

Get into Golf with a course of lessons from just £20
Golf will return to the Olympic Games this summer for the first time since 1904.
Golf is a game for all, whatever your age, ability or time pressures and it is never too late to give it a try or to get back into it.
As well as the challenge and sense of achievement from learning a new skill, golf ticks many other boxes for health and wellbeing.

Simply venturing outdoors can also provide a feel good factor and it boosts vitamin D levels. Vitamin D helps maintains strong bones and muscle function and keeps the immune system healthy.
There are social benefits too, both while on the course and in the friendly environment of the clubhouse.
The government recommendation is for at least 150 minutes of brisk walking a week. This equates to around 12 holes

CHAIR YOGA
When you hear the word ‘yoga’, what springs to mind? Maybe you recall magazine images of slim, young people with amazing, bendy bodies and think; “that’s not for me!” The beauty of yoga, though, is that it is available to anybody, no matter how mobile or bendy.
Recent studies have indicated some of the many benefits of yoga and it is now being taught in many settings, including; care homes for the elderly, facilities for people with physical or learning disabilities, hospitals, injury-recovery units and hospices.

ZUMBATHON 2016
This year Zumbathon with Wyn will take place on Saturday July 16th in Sheringham Lobster pub gardens. 10am - 1pm.
We will be raising funds for Sheringham Carnival and North Norfolk radios Kids Trust.
This three hour session will be fun with a party atmosphere and I would like as many people as possible to come along and take part. Don’t worry if you have never done Zumba before come along and have a dance.
For those amongst us who are not able to sit or lay down on the floor, then practicing yoga with a chair provides a good solution. Chair yoga is also valuable for people struggling with low energy, or low confidence, as the chair offers that extra support. And everything in a class may not be done sitting on the chair; it can also assist when doing standing poses. By using a chair, one can develop flexibility, muscle tone, balance and strength, within a safe environment.
Yoga, however, is not just about the physical body; the system also includes breathing exercises to improve our breath and over-all health, as well as relaxation techniques to calm the mind. Through yoga, we can learn and develop coping skills for dealing with the stresses of daily life. A weekly Chair Yoga class is starting at Sheringham Community Centre on Wednesday 17th February, 2pm – 3pm. For more information contact Elaine Smith, yoga teacher and yoga therapist; 01263 862168.
