Age Concern North Norfolk in Sheringham is only a small independent charity and relies heavily on kind donations from the public, local initiatives and fund raising organisations to help deliver the much-needed services we provide to the public.
One such service, our day centre on Cremer Street in Sheringham, was badly in need of being redecorated but sadly we could not afford to do so - until we learnt of the Community Payback Team.
Community Payback is a scheme that punishes offenders for their crimes but also allows them to make amends in their local community. Community Payback is part of a sentence passed down by Crown and Magistrates Courts and offenders can be sentenced to between 40 and 300 hours of unpaid work in the community.
Offenders paying back for their crimes have given Age Concern in S heringham a helping hand by redecorating our entire centre. Groups on Community Payback with Norfolk and Suffolk Community Rehabilitation Company (NSCRC) have been painting the centre giving it a new fresh, cheery, look for all that use the centre.
Everyone at Age Concern North Norfolk, staff, Trustees and clients to, would like to pass on our sincere thanks to NSCRC Team for all their hard work and effort in bringing our centre so much new life and colour.
NSCRC is always looking for new projects in the local area and members of the public can suggest projects by emailing: project.requests@nscrc.probation.gsi.gov.uk

Musical cast includes a North Norfolk sister act
Two sisters are playing love rivals in a youth musical telling the story of one of the 20th century's most influential and tragic women.
Twenty year old Paris Chandler is stepping into the starring role of Argentinian First Lady Eva Peron.
And younger sister Chloe, 17, plays Peron’s mistress who is ousted by the upwardly-mobile, actress turned political reformer Eva.
The sister act in Sheringham Little Theatre's Evita show is not unusual for the showbizzy siblings.
The Aylsham pair have regularly been seen on stage at the town's high school drama productions – both of them taking leading roles in recent years – and also help mum Jo Chandler run her West End Experience events for would-be young stage stars.
Paris, who is waiting to start an English Literature degree at the UEA said she was intoxicated by the songs and story of Evita, which told the story of a strong woman, who was “sassy, independent and ambitious” and rose from the streets to political power.
They are just two of 40 young cast and crew members, aged from eight to 21, in the sixth youth production staged by the theatre as part of its community role to encourage young people to get involved in the performing arts.
Theatre director Debbie Thompson said the youth productions aimed to give opportunities for talented young people in North Norfolk to “make friends, learn theatre and social skills, work as a team, and gain self confidence.”
• Evita runs at the Sheringham Little Theatre from April 2- April 9 (7.30pm nightly except April 3, plus a 2.30pm matinee on April 9). Tickets via the box office 01263 822347 or visit sheringhamlittletheatre.com
• The Little Theatre’s next youth production will be a mid-September concert of show songs. To get involved email debbie@sheringhamlittletheatre.com

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb has pressed the Government over reports that the recruitment of vital healthcare staff is being hindered by administrative delays.

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks are used to check the criminal records of people applying for certain jobs, such as working with children or in healthcare, but there have been reports of a vast backlog of DBS applications waiting to be processed. In an email seen by Norman Lamb, the Metropolitan Police stated that it is “working on [DBS] cases that are approximately 130 days old due to a backlog of around 71,000 applicants.”
In response to a written parliamentary question, a Home Office Minister admitted that the Metropolitan Police Service is not meeting its targets for the time taken to complete DBS checks, and that a recovery plan has been put in place. Norman Lamb has now pressed the Government to be honest about the full scale of the problem.
“It is completely unacceptable that thousands of people are being prevented from starting work because of these delays – particularly at a time when health and care organisations are already experiencing difficulty recruiting,” said Mr. Lamb.
“There can be no justification for this, and I have asked the Home Secretary Theresa May if she will publish information on the performance of every police force in the country. I hope that the Government will take immediate steps to clear the backlog and speed up the application process, so that people can move into their new jobs as quickly as possible.” Sheringham Independent 434 February 27th 2016

Braised Lamb Shoulder
www.silverandward.co.uk
For this month's special recipe from the Mackenzie Hotel Group, Jamie Hood, Head Chef from the Links, presents his recipe for Braised Lamb Shoulder
Ingredients 1x lamb shoulder 2x lits of beef stock 3x shallots 3x teaspoons of garlic puree 100g salted butter 100 ml of port or red wine
Method Buy a lamb shoulder from your local butcher and place in a oven proof bowl and cook for 2-3 hours at 160 oC. Once the lamb shoulder is cooked and
tender to the point of falling apart take out of the stock and leave to cool.
Reduce the rest of the stock down with the port or red wine until thick and dark in colour. Then dice your shallots and sweat down with the butter and garlic. When your onions are cooked add your stock to the mix.
Flake down your lamb shoulder picking out the fatty pieces and placing into a bowl. Add your shallot mixture and slowly fold together adding seasoning to taste.
Practice Makes Perfect
Tickets are already selling for The Sheringham Players March production, comprising an evening of one act plays under the title “Practise Makes Perfect”, both of which are based around events that do not always go according to plan.
The first play, written by Lee Fewitt and directed by Hazel Randall, is entitled “Is There Anybody There?”, a drama set in late Victorian London where Mrs Carrington, a blind clairvoyant, summons the spirits for those who are willing to pay. However, when one of the party is possessed by the spirit of a murdered girl strange happenings occur, when doors are locked and time stands still. Is it for real or are they being deceived? And is there a link to other murders that have happened in the area? Could any of those present be the suspect, or are there darker forces at work?. Who is the killer? Will all will be revealed, or will the spirits keep their secrets?
The second play, written by Paul Reakes and directed by Tim Travers, is

entitled “Bang! You’re Dead!” and is a comedy mystery thriller. Lydia and her boyfriend Marcus rehearse the murder of Theo, Lydia’s husband, which they are to commit that evening. When the victim and “perfect witness” arrive all goes according to plan except that the wrong person ends up dead. A ghastly mistake - or are there some deviations from the original plot?
In-between the two plays there is a short sketch entitled "Cindy and Julie", written by Bruce Kane and directed by Helen Simmons, and tells of two women who sit nervously in a waiting room, arguing and commiserating about the clichés of romantic love and their broken marriages.
The performance runs from Thursday 17th - Saturday 19th March at Sheringham Little Theatre at 7.30 p.m and tickets are available from the box office at £10.

CAB advisers to offer drop-in service at local foodbank centres
The Cromer and District Foodbank is delighted to announce that Citizens Advice advisers will soon be operating at three of its distribution centres in North Norfolk.
Since last December, Citizens Advice Mid Norfolk have provided a drop-in service at the foodbank’s distribution centre at Sheringham and from the end of February, Norfolk Citizens Advice Volunteers will provide a drop-in service in the foodbank’s distribution centres in Cromer and Stalham, too.
Since it was founded in 2012 the foodbank has built up a strong support network for local people in financial crisis, working with over 70 partner agencies to offer food and advice across 200 square miles of North Norfolk.
“Citizens Advice plays a crucial role for foodbank clients, helping to identify and resolve the causes behind each crisis,” says Ella King, the foodbank’s project manager. “Both Citizens Advice Mid Norfolk and Norfolk Citizens Advice have been working closely with us to help provide easier access for clients within a caring supportive environment. The service is available to all comers. You don’t have to have a foodbank voucher to attend – but if you need one, the CAB adviser can issue it.”

Calling all old Cub Scouts
A call has gone out for norfolk residents to search through their family photographs, and question their grandparents or even great grandparents for the challenge of the century.
The aim is to find the oldest surviving Cub Scout or Wolf Cub in Norfolk, as 2016 sees the Cub Scouts celebrate their 100th anniversary. Norfolk Scouts also want former Cub Leaders who live in Norfolk to get in touch so that they can be invited to a Grand Howl on 25th November.
They want to make this an anniversary to remember for the 2000 Cub Scouts across Norfolk.
Scouting history goes back to Robert Baden-Powell, a soldier, artist, actor and free-thinker, who was the founder of Scouting in 1907. His first camp on Brownsea Island brought together 20 boys from a variety of backgrounds. The success of the camp spurred him on to write what would become a classic book of the 20th century, Scouting for Boys.
Scouting soon became a global phenomenon and with numbers growing, it quickly became clear that young people of all ages wanted to get involved. Baden-Powell
recognised that a junior section was needed back in 1914 and published his outline for such a scheme, calling it Wolf Cubbing.
It was not until 1916 that Wolf Scouts was established for younger Scouts and Rover Scouts for the older boys. Baden-Powell wanted the junior scheme to have its own distinct name, uniform and programme.
Baden-Powell asked his friend Rudyard Kipling for the use of his Jungle Book as a motivational frame in Cub Scouting and in 1917 Baden-Powell wrote a new book, The Wolf Cub's Handbook, for the new Wolf Cubs section. Wolf Cubs were renamed Cub Scouts in 1967 and are still going strong.
The County Commissioner Nickie Chapman, and Tony Milburn, the Assistant County Commissioner for Cubs in Norfolk have launched the Cubs 100 Challenge, offering the chance for boys and girls to earn the Norfolk County Cub Challenge Badge to celebrate 100 years of Cub Scouting. The badge is a multi-part badge with an “Achieved” Arc. The badge design is a wolf’s paw print. Each toe of the paw print is worth 25 points and is awarded once a Cub Scout completes one of the four sections.
The sections are: Get Active, Adventure Camping, Look Around You and Down the Cub Hut! The Cubs can choose various
Holt Probus Club
activities from each section to earn points ranging from 2–10 to gain their unique badge. Norfolk Scouts have organised an “It’s a Knockout” Competition with the final in July and all Cubs will be receiving a 100th Anniversary woggle.
Nickie Chapman said: “Creating programmes that will be exciting and challenging for all Norfolk Cubs has been our main aim and the activities are designed to offer a more taxing and adventurous Cub Scouting experience to both boys and girls.
“Yes, Cub Scouts is not just for boys, it is for girls as well. I find that a lot of parents still just think Cubs and Scouting in general is only for boys, but we have, in Norfolk, sections which have girls outnumbering the boys. It is worth highlighting we also have young people with disabilities and special needs. Scouting truly is ‘For All’.
“Cub Scouts is for young people aged 8 to 10½ and operates all over Norfolk. This Cubs 100 challenge is open to all young people, even if they join next week.”

In an informative and witty talk on 4 February, Holt Probus member Robin Johnson spoke in support of the charity Prostate Cancer UK.
He drew attention to the need for men, particularly as they grow older, to be aware of the various problems that can affect the prostate gland. All too often, men are reluctant to refer water-works difficulties to their GP until past the time that treatment could prove effective.
Yet, if symptoms are picked up early, a troublesome prostate can be dealt with successfully, as Robin was able to assure the gathering from his own experience.
He made available a range of helpful literature provided by the charity.
In giving a vote of thanks to the speaker, Edward Hackford made a point of praising the quality of service provided by the Urology Dept at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital.

Probate Law One of the most frequent situations I find in the contested probate law field is where there has been a second (or third) marriage and the husband or wife (or both) have children from their previous marriages. For whatever reason, the husband and wife prepare Wills, perhaps later in their lives, and exclude a child. It is remarkable how often this happens. You can understand how such a situation may arise. There are family disagreements and as the child grows up, becomes an adult and has their own life, they become distant and disconnected from their parent.
That child may have had the expectation all through their life that they would inherit money from mum or dad and it is not until the last Will and Testament is read that the child finds out that they are excluded. They are then looking for advice about what they can do next. When a client like this came to me recently, the first thing we did was examine the Will. As a specialist contested probate solicitor, I am looking to see if the Will might, for some reason, be invalid. Many are, particularly if they are DIY internet wills or prepared by an online Will Writer. It is easy to get the signing of a Will wrong and this is a way to show it is invalid. I consider the signature and the signatures of the witnesses. I will also start to ask questions about the
circumstances of the drafting of the Will and who was present , for example, was it the person who stands to benefit who acted as a witness. In this case, everything appeared to be in order and a Will prepared up by a solicitor is likely to be done correctly.
I also look to see whether there has been a possibility of undue influence, although this can be difficult to prove. It is possible to overturn a Will if it is clear it has been made under duress. Questions can then be asked about the capacity of the person. Did they understand what they were doing? Was there any dementia or depression?
In this case, all those issues seemed to be in order and the Will appeared to be valid. The next aspect to look at is whether there is an Inheritance Act claim. This is where the Will did not give reasonable financial provision to someone who might have expected it, for example, a spouse or partner or a child or dependant. A claim can be brought in those circumstances. In the case I was advising on, the child was now an adult and she was working and supporting herself comfortably. Unfortunately, there was not anything else she could do to challenge what seemed to her to be an unfair situation. The lesson to draw from this? I think it is to talk to your family, be as open as possible
Sheringham Independent 434 February 27th 2016
about your Will and what you want to happen with your assets. It should not have been a surprise to this client and it was only after her father died that she discovered her ideas of what would be left to her were wrong. She, perhaps, could have been saved a lot of heartache if she had only known in advance, hard as that might have been at the time.
In other cases, we succeed in overturning wills or making Inheritance Act claims, but after the event it takes a lot of hard work and time to deal with such situations, which could be avoided. At Clapham & Collinge we can provide you with all of the necessary information, support an d legal advice on Will disputes and how they can be resolved. Sheringham WI
There was a flurry of excitement at Sheringham WI this month when the word chocolate was headlined in the programme.
Linds Bestwicke of Pixie-Hall Handmade chocolates gave a mouth wateringly delicious demonstration on making your own chocolates and then, best of all, ladies were able to test them. They certainly met with the members’ approval!
It was also a busy night with members signing up to a whole array of activities ranging from walking at Blickling Hall, feasting at Marmalades and the Sitting Room, International Women’s day at the Forum on 5 March 10am – 5pm and Art Buffs.
This month Art Buffs will be creating green hearts to share as part of the Green Hearts for Climate Change campaign.
As a result of our recent open evening at the Sitting Room there were lots of new faces and it was good to see new friendships being formed as we discussed plans for the involvement of the WI in the street party to celebrate the Queen’s 90th Birthday on 11 June.
We will be representing the WI at Sheringham Town Council’s meeting on 15 February, where all the groups in the town can come together and share ideas. Anyone who wishes to join this lively vibrant WI is welcome to come and visit at our next meeting on 14 March at Sheringham Community Centre. Doors open at 6.45pm and the meeting starts at 7.15pm. Find us on FB and contact presidentsewi@gmail.com or Liz on 01263 649227 for more information. Make this the year you do something different and come along and see us for a night out with the girls.

A Blue Tit’s Tale I’m a very busy blue tit, I keep a tidy nest, My partner’s getting friendly And becoming quite a pest!
I know that it is springtime And I should do my ‘bit’ But I’m fed up with this ‘baby’ lark So I’m giving it a miss. I plan to put my feet up, My feathers need a curl. There’s a blackbird winking at me So I might give him a whirl!!

North Norfolk Photographic Society
north norfolk Photographic Society welcomed vic Hainsworth to judge their members’ digital photographs on 3 February.
Vic first caught the Photographic bug whilst serving in the forces in Aden in 1965. After leaving the Services, he was for over 20 years a professional wedding photographer, and has been a member of Colchester Photographic Society for over 40 years. In February 2013, he was elected to the Executive of the East Anglian Federation of Photographic Societies as Awards Officer of the Photographic Association of Great Britain, his role being to promote distinctions around East Anglia.
Power to Go
There were three competitions, the first being in the Novice section. Intended for new and inexperienced members, many of the images shown looked to be well better than novice material! There was no set subject, and the winner was Martyn Gould with an action photo ’Lone Swimmer’.
Lone Swimmer
The ’Advanced’ members had two competi tions to enter - the first with a set subject ’Power’, which was interpreted in many ways. There was a light bulb, a vigorous canoeist, a steaming locomotive, and so on. This was won by Nick Akers with ‘Power to Go’ - the steaming loco.
Lastly, the Open Advanced group was won by Liz Akers - a lovely head shot of a young girl, beautifully lit and composed, entitled ‘Hayley‘.

VACANCIES
Based in Cromer Norfolk we have 2 vacancies one for a full-time position and one-part time position for domiciliary support workers.
This is not an easy job but it is an extremely rewarding role. You will be undertaking the support of vulnerable adults within the community. This involves every aspect of their needs - personal care, emotional support, companionship, shopping, assistance with eating, medication etc.
This is also an extremely skilled position, care workers are no longer unqualified individuals. Nowadays they work alongside the other disciplines within the community and are required to have a number of skills as directed by the care quality commission. These include moving and handling training, medication training, health and safety training. Anyone undertaking this employment must be a dedicated individual and genuinely want to do the work, it is not a light hearted undertaking.
The work varies from a days’ worth of pop-in visits, to longer sits, to live in and night sits. A car is essential, we cover North Walsham, Mundesley, Gimmingham, Cromer, the Runtons and Sheringham as well as villages within and around the surrounding area. Experience is preferred although we would give full training to the right individual. No criminal records are accepted and the hours available can be as few as 8, or as many as 40 plus.
In acknowledgement of the wonderful work our staff undertake we pay above the rate of any of our competitors. We also pay time and a half all Bank Holidays, we pay 5 weeks holiday a year (full time employees) and mileage. I believe this work ideally suits the 45 plus age group but younger individuals would be considered. We have vacancies for both female and male care workers.
If you are interested please contact Tee Carver directly on 07591 686812 between 9 and 5pm and leave a message with your name and contact number or email tee@theecccltd.com

Dear Margaret,
On Wednesday, February 3rd, 2016, Moss Taylor gave a talk on The History of Birding in North Norfolk. The setting was at the Little Theatre and was enjoyed by all.
The Age of Collecting - At this time most birding consisted of shooting birds – mostly by 'Gentlemen gunners” who came to this area for wildfowling and identified birds after they were killed. “ The Banville Diaries” - being diaries of a gamekeeper working for Lord Buxton from 1822-1844 - were an excellent record of the times. Banville lived for some time at the Lodge to Sheringham Hall at the top of Lodge Hill. Birds were often stuffed and 2 prominent taxidermists were Gunn of Norwich and Pashley of Cley.
The Age of Conservation - In 1926 Sydney Long presented a large area of saltmarsh in Cley to the newly formed Norfolk Naturalists Trust – later to become the N.W.T. A short while later Mr E Arnold gave what is now known as Arnolds Marsh in Salthouse – which joined the Cley reserve one of the first bird reserves in the country. Bob Bishop was appointed warden/gamekeeper – he lived at the Wardens House at Cley specially built for holders of this position. His grandson Billy later became Warden – Billy's son Bernard is still Warden. Interestingly Long and Arnold were keen wildfowlers but could see the merits of conservation.
Post War Years - Shortly after WW2 the Cley Bird Observatory was created from defence buildings left after the war – it lasted until those buildings were destroyed by the 1953 floods. It was set up by Richard Richardson an avid bird watcher and brilliant self-taught bird artist. He encouraged many young people to watch birds instead of shooting them. Ringing to find more about their lives began at this time at 2 bases Walsley Hill and Blakeney Point. Things came full circle with Aubrey Buxton, a descendant of the Lord Buxton in Part 1, being prominent in continuing the conservation work as well as directing/producing the famous TV series “Survival”. Nowadays North Norfolk, especially Cley, is known as the Mecca of English birding.
Mr. Taylor presented an excellent talk combining two of his favourite topics - history and birding, having a thorough knowledge of both within North Norfolk.

Sheringham gets new pastor at Lighthouse Community Church
The new Senior Pastor of Lighthouse Community Church in Sheringham, Ian Savory, will be inducted at a special service on Saturday March 6, and everyone in the community is welcome to join the celebrations. He has explained the importance of engaging with the community as he and his wife Sue settle into the town.
training events. Ian and Sue have many friends in the town, including Lighthouse youth pastor, Peter Skivington, who was youth worker at Oak Grove while Ian was there.
Ian is very keen to build on the excellent work that has already been achieved by Lighthouse in building links with the community. “Lighthouse seems to be held in high regard in the town” he says, “and I am grateful to God for that – Our first priority has to be mission”
Ian has taken up the post at Lighthouse following the retirement of Bryan Pickard, who has pastor at the church for six years, and steered the Baptists through a major building project, resulting in the establishment of Lighthouse Community Church in 2013.
“The Lighthouse building is amazing, and I would encourage anyone who hasn’t been there to come along and sample the coffee, but it is not WHO we are” explained Ian, “We must get involved with our community as people – It is not enough just to expect them to come into our lovely building”
Ian was senior pastor at Kingsgate Community Church in Great Yarmouth, and for many years before that pastor at Oak Grove Chapel in Norwich. He has memories of coming to Sheringham as a child, and also camping with his family at nearly Kelling Heath.
Ian said that the church enjoys strong links with the other churches in Sheringham, and this has been helped by the BeachLife youth outreach, where folk from different churches have worked together in a climate of mutual respect.
“We are thrilled to be here,” he says, “And I’m committed to seeing what God wants to do in North Norfolk. Even our kids, who are now grown up and married, still come back to Sheringham for their fish and chips!”
He is also Police Chaplain for North Norfolk, a role which he finds rewarding, and very useful for forming bonds with the local community.
The links with the Sheringham church go back at least ten years, and he has returned on many occasions to lead meetings, services and
society where there is a huge amount of loneliness” Ian said, “We can help to build community, drawing different ages together, which is really important.”
Ian’s induction service will be at 3pm on Saturday March 5. The guest speaker will be Mrs Audrey Chipper from Isleham, and there will be refreshments.

Local voices must be heard in national review of flood defences North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb has asked the government to make sure local people have the chance to have a say in a planned review of flood defences. Environment Secretary Liz Truss announced the setting up of a National Resilience Review before Christmas. The Review will examine the best way to cope with flooding risks in the future.
"As the MP for a constituency with a near 50 mile stretch of coastline,
extensive inland waterways and significant areas of low-lying land I believe it is critically important that the government is fully focused on the need to protect communities from the risk of flooding," says Norman Lamb.
"I have asked the government to clarify the timetable for the review and to make clear how communities and local councils can have their say. It's vital that people living in places like North Norfolk can make their voices heard."
Paralympic Star Launches Nissan Dealership’s Fundraiser
A London 2012 Paralympic Gold Medallist has helped a north Norfolk Nissan dealer kick-off a major fundraiser for the British Paralympic Association.
Kevin Abbs, Dealer Principal at Crayford and Abbs Nissan, said: “We had a fantastic turnout for the event which just goes to show what an incredible inspiration Jessica-Jane and her fellow Paralympians are to so many.
As part of Nissan’s relationship with the British Paralympic Association, Paralympics GB star Jessica-Jane Applegate MBE, who won gold in the S14 200m freestyle, visited Crayford and Abbs Nissan in Holt to officially launch its fundraising campaign which aims to raise thousands to help send ParalympicsGB’s athletes to the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.
While at the Gypsies Lane dealership, she took time to meet local schoolchildren and aspiring athletes and to chat to them about her preparations for Rio 2016.
She also met some of the many dealer staff, customers and friends who, as part of the fundraiser, will run, swim and cycle 5,876 miles – the distance between north Norfolk and Rio – by April 30th.
“It was particularly pleasing to see so many young people with dreams of following in Jessica-Jane’s footsteps visiting the showroom to chat to her.”
Jessica-Jane Applegate MBE said: “It’s always great to meet young people with a passion for swimming and Paralympic sport in general.
The proceeds will be combined with money raised by Nissan and its dealers nationwide and will help to supercharge ParalympicsGB’s bid for sporting glory in Rio. Nissan is the Official Automotive Partner of ParalympicsGB.
Sheringham Independent 434 February 27th 2016
“It was also very interesting to hear about Crayford and Abbs’ fundraising campaign. The money it raises can have a real impact on the success of ParalympicsGB at the Rio Games.”

Cromer and Sheringham
Probus Club
Following two successful coffee meetings in November and January, Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club welcomed eight new prospective members to its February lunch meeting at The Links Hotel West Runton. The Club, formed over 40 years ago, exists primarily to extend friendship to those gentlemen who are retired or nearly retired, meeting monthly for a good lunch and to hear informative and entertaining speakers on a variety of topics.
This month our speaker was both informative and very entertaining. As a former county cricketer and coach, schoolmaster and mathematician, Alan Ponder kept us very much on our toes with his wideranging coverage of all things sporting. After leading with five of the major requirements to be successful in most sports - skill, speed, strength, suppleness and psychology - he went on to elaborate statistically how each sport also required stamina. An average Premier League footballer covers about 17kms in a football match, exceeded however by a Test Match fast bowler who in a single day's cricket covers about 20kms. Apparently football referees, if they keep up with play (and some supposedly do not!) run much further than this in 90mins. After many questions to Alan he was thanked by Tony Lyons for his very amusing and interesting contribution.
Our next lunch meeting at The Links Hotel West Runton is on 1 March when the speaker will be Dr Tony Leech on 'Witches and Devils: the Darker side of Fungi', a very 'down to earth' topic on which he is the foremost authority in the region.
If you would like to meet a very friendly group of men for lunch and to hear Dr Leech please contact our lunch secretary, Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or visit our website, www.candsprobus.club.

Colours of Venice
A Major One-Man Exhibition by Trevor Woods at Gallery Plus, Wells-next-the-Sea
Saturday 26 March – Sunday 3 April
Burano – the island of colour – is where Trevor feels totally in his element. Each building is painted with a different coloured render and there’s so much to explore, it’s hard to know which way to turn, because every corner reveals a new set of colours and angles. Trevor wants his paintings of Burano to make you feel like you are there, looking to see what’s around the next corner or down the next alleyway.
Everything constantly moves in Venice: from the visitors and residents, to the boats and the pontoons; and from the washing hanging across the canals, to the reflections in St Marc’s Square when it’s flooded and you go for a paddle!
This exhibition is about stopping time, freezing the frame, and producing paintings that are a snapshot of Venice seen through Trevor’s eyes.
This exhibition, featuring over 30 brand new paintings, has been inspired by returning trips to venice.
The buildings and the history, of course, will always provide a superb source of material for paintings – it has done for centuries and many artists have covered the classical scenes – but for this exhibition Trevor has gone beyond that and sought out the nooks and crannies, the rhythm, the light and shade, and the ebb and flow of the floating city.
There is so much to explore on the islands that make up Venice, especially when you head off the well-beaten tourist track. Getting lost and following the signs, which send you round and round in circles, is all part of the adventure!
Venice island itself is a magnificent source of inspiration: The views over the rooftops from with the towering cruise ships in the background, or up close to the crumbling stonework, the canals, the hidden alleyways, the bobbing pontoons and the swaying boats all sights that never fail to stir emotions.
Trevor Woods is a popular artist based in Wells-next-the-Sea, North Norfolk. He has been painting professionally for 12 years and, with his wife Jo, owns Gallery Plus where his studio is always open to visitors. His distinctive, graphic style has allowed him to develop the skill of breaking down views into their raw elements: clean lines, flat colours, and dark shadows. Each painting is just as much about what he leaves out as what he includes.
COLOURS OF VENICE opens with an all-day preview on Saturday 26th March from 10am – 5pm, when Trevor will be present to welcome you with a glass of Prosecco, and continues until Sunday 3rd April. Open Monday - Saturday, 10am5pm, plus Sundays 27th March and 3rd April 11am-4pm.

On Murano – the island of glass – you have to separate the work of generations of glass makers from the tourist “souvenirs”, so when visiting these incredible makers you can be blown away by the work they produce and appreciate the seemingly impossible skills that have been passed down through their families. The artistry is astounding and the sense of passion and nostalgia is all around.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Last year, of the 219 cats which came into care, 128 were kittens under 6 months old. This meant that 128 kittens were either unwanted by their owners or were born to mother cats that were strays or feral.
We therefore feel that, with Spring just around the corner, it is an appropriate time to remind everyone that there is help available from us to get their cats neutered. We have been running a special campaign since last April, but, having been contacted by people recently who were unaware of this who would have contacted us sooner had they known, we feel now is the time to advise you all of what help is available from us.
we hold accounts, namely, Bridge at Wroxham, Westover in North Walsham, Glaven in Holt, and Miramar in Sheringham. Although the offer if for a maximum of 2 cats per household, you can still get help with any additional cats as we also have the fixed price vouchers at £40 for females and £25 for males.
We have, in recent weeks, had sightings of a “new cat” in our garden and because he is in good condition thought he was new to the neighbourhood and finding his way around. We have now discovered that, although new to the town, he has strayed some considerable distance from his home and, as a consequence, we are now trying to gain his trust with food placed in a cat trap (one is also being set in a neighbour’s garden) to help reunite him with his owner. Feeding a cat in other instances would only entice and encourage it away from its home, which can be very distressing for the family whose cat it is.
All contact for help should initially be made to the neutering line, 07880 256948. If you are on a low income or benefits and have one or two cats, you can apply under our special scheme “get your cat neutered for £5”. Irene, who deals with the calls on this line, will be able to advise whether you are eligible and where to send the money if you are. On receipt of this, we will e-mail the appropriate vets to confirm that you have paid and that a voucher or vouchers to cover the cost is being sent to them. This offer is only available to be used with the vets with whom
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

kidneys and ureters (the tube running from the kidney to bladder).
Could your rabbit be at risk of Bladder and Kidney Stones?
Bodley was referred to Toll Barn Vets by another veterinary practice when he stopped eating. His owner was understandably very concerned so we started investigating immediately. Just an hour later we had the answer from our own in-house lab – the blood tests showed Bodley’s kidneys weren’t functioning properly and the x-rays and ultrasound scans revealed the reason for this was stones causing blockages within both

5 Station Road, West Runton, Norfolk. Tel: 01263 837611 www.williamsofwestrunton.co.uk
Treatment was started immediately with IV fluids, antibiotics and surgery to remove the stones causing blockages in both the kidneys and the ureters. After several days of intensive care from our dedicated team in our purpose built ‘exotic pet’ hospital ward, and repeat blood tests to ensure his kidneys remained functional after surgery, Bodley went home to continue his recovery with lots of TLC from his owner!
Bladder and kidney stones in rabbits are often composed of calcium carbonate or oxalate. The exact reason why these stones form is unknown, however, factors believed to be involved include not drinking enough, genetic predisposition, excess dietary calcium, underlying kidney or bladder disease, obesity, arthritis and insufficient exercise. A variety of signs can be associated with kidney and bladder stones ranging from difficulty or straining to urinate, Urine sludge (white chalky calcium deposits seen in urine), urine incontinence and therefore urine scald, blood in the urine, urinating small amounts in unusual areas, weight loss, inappetence and abdominal pain. These signs can also be associated with other diseases so it is important to have your bunny regularly checked by a vet to ensure they remain healthy.
A variety of treatment options exist for kidney and bladder stones depending on the stage of stone formation when the disease is noticed so it is vital to detect problems early in order to maximise the chance of successful treatment. If you are concerned about your pet please give us a call on 01692 407126 to discuss how we can help or book a free of charge health check with our qualified nurses. Sheringham Carnival Queen 2016
Have you ever dreamed of becoming a real queen? Here's your chance to make that a reality!
The 2016 Carnival Queen selection night is held on the 15th April 7:30pm at The Two Lifeboats (judging at 8:30pm). You must be age 16 or over, be available carnival week and the Cromer Carnival Parade August 17th and live within a 3 mile radius. Entries close on April 15th.
The Sheringham Shoal Community Fund criteria relate to renewable energy, marine environment and sustainability, or education in these subject areas, and the Fund's assessing panel found the Energy Rescuers project to be a good fit.
The aim of the project is to inspire energy education and to change habits at an early age. The workshops are based on fun - storytelling, singing, dance and games - and each child receives a book to share with their parents or carers, so that the energy saving message is continued in the home. Bjorn Mo Østgren, General Manager of the Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm is pleased with the interim findings of the project, saying:
"This is just the type of environmentally friendly scheme that Sheringham Shoal wants to support. The overall objective of the project is to reduce energy use in participating schools by 10%, and an early analysis of short term energy saving in 18 of the 35 schools indicates that the project is progressing well."
