London Marathon for Amyloidosis

Duncan Ayers was born and bred in Sheringham (born West Runton), and says that when he left North Norfolk to go to the university of Surrey, he took the unusual decision for a 21 year old, of not partying the night away but instead to run a marathon and raise money for charity.‘I ran in 2001 and raised over £2000 for Sheringham lifeboat - my family have had ties to the lifeboat for generations, both the Ayers family have had crew members and the West’s history is entwined with the Sheringham station.

At the age of 31, I ran the London marathon again, that time raising money for the spinal injuries association, a charity that had helped my brother Simon Ayers, after he was paralysed from the waist down in an accident at work. This year I was lucky enough to get a ballot place so was able to pick another charity I really feel passionately about.

My marathon inspiration came from my father who ran the London marathon in 1988 aged 39. He supported me with advice and with cheers on the day from varying points on the route. This year’s race will be the first without that support. Sadly, after a long battle, my father died 28 October 2014. He had been battling for years against Amyloidosis, a genetic hereditary disease that had killed his kidneys. Despite two operations and one kidney transplant, Dad was finally beaten by the decease. St Peter’s church was jammed for his funeral. He was loved in the town and well respected. He was a great husband, father and amazing grandfather. Continued on page 4...

London Marathon for Amyloidosis Continued from front cover...

Trying to do something to help, I threw my name into the ballot for the next race I could get into and got the proverbial golden ticket. The charity I am running for is the UCL Amyloidosis research fund. They are not like the big charities and cannot buy places in the London marathon so using my ballot place means I am the sole runner for the charity.

I have paid for my own running vest and set up a just giving page. All the money raised goes directly to research to develop a cure for amyloidosis. To stop this disease would be a legacy dad would be proud of and whereas I am lucky not to have the gene, both my brothers have inherited it. I have been contacted by others who have lost loved ones to this disease and there is a real chance that it can be stopped.

Im 35 now (36 by race day), I still live in Sheringham and love to run here, but I am a television cameraman so my training runs have been taking place while filming BBC’s One show, TFI Friday, TOTP and most recently I was running at 2000ft while working on The Jump in Austria, and seen running an odd lap at the Cheltenham Festival while working on the Channel 4 Racing.

Although I won’t have Dad cheering me on while I run, the money raised may mean another family keeps there loved one and that thought will keep me running’.

If any of our readers would like to sponsor Duncan, his fundraising page is www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Duncan-Ayers or traditional sponsorship can be made by sending a cheque, made payable to UCL Development fund, to either Duncan at 22b The Avenue, Sheringham NR26 8DG, or Beth Jones at National Amyloidosis Centre, Division of Medicine, Royal Free Campus, University College London Medical School, Rowland Hill Street, London NW3 2PF referencing Duncan’s name - please do a gift aid declaration if possible.

CROMER AND SHERINGHAM PROBUS CLUB

Cromer without a pier? It is difficult to visualise this gem of the Norfolk coast without one, and although the first jetty is said to date from the 14th century, storms frequently washed the structures away and it was not until 1821 that the first iron pier was constructed for the purpose of promenading.

Alistair Murphy, Curator of Cromer Museum, outlined the growth of Cromer in the 19th century at the April lunch meeting of Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club attended by 37 members, and with appropriate use of photographs, showed how the town expanded rapidly triggered by a combination of factors.

Wealthy families, encouraged by the health-giving properties of sea air, made their way to the Cromer area and built or bought large houses such as Northrepps Cottage, The Grove, Cliff House, Colne House and Newhaven Court. These families, among them the Gurneys, Buxtons and Barclays were leading lights in the formation of Barclays Bank in 1896. The Bond Cabbell family had bought Cromer Hall in 1852 together with much of the area and in 1885 sold off large chunks of the Estate for development.

The building of the railways made Cromer more accessible with Cromer High Station at the top of Norwich Road opening in 1877 bringing passengers from London and the present Beach Station from the Midlands in 1887.

Large hotels were built, the Hotel de Paris, the Grand and the Cliftonville among them and lots of other accommodation appeared to deal with the growing popularity of Cromer as a holiday destination. During that century the town’s resident population had grown from 678 to 3,781 according to the census, and with about 8000 today any decline seems unlikely.

And the pier? The present structure was built in 1900, the Pavilion, covering a former bandstand, in 1905 and the Lifeboat House added in 1923.

Mr Murphy was thanked for his informative and stimulating presentation by the Chairman. If you have not visited the Museum it is well worth calling in and a stroll along the pier to see some of the best views in the region is a must for everyone!

Our next Lunch Meeting at The Links Hotel, West Runton, is on Tuesday 5 May when the visiting speaker will be Captain Albert Schoonderbeek telling us what it’s like to be a Cruise Captain.

If you would like to meet a very friendly group of men for lunch and to hear Captain Schoonderbeek please contact our Lunch Secretary, Dave Vickery, on 01263 824306 or visit our website www.candsprobus.club

Chocolate Profiteroles @ The Dales

For the choux pastry • 200ml/7fl oz cold water • 4 tsp caster sugar • 85g/3oz unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing • 115g/4oz plain flour • pinch salt • 3 medium eggs, beaten For the cream filling • 600ml/1 pint double cream • 3 tsp icing sugar • ½ tsp vanilla extract (or essence)

For the chocolate coating • 200g/7oz dark chocolate, broken into pieces Method 1 Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6.

2. For the choux pastry, place the water, sugar and butter into a large saucepan. Heat gently until the butter has melted.

3. Turn up the heat, then quickly pour in the flour and salt all in one go.

4. Remove from the heat and beat the mixture vigorously until a smooth paste is formed. Once the mixture comes away from the side of the pan,

transfer to a large bowl and leave to cool for 10-15 minutes.

5. Beat in the eggs, a little at a time, until the mixture is smooth and glossy and has a soft dropping consistency - you may not need it all.

6. Lightly grease a large baking sheet. Using a piping bag and plain 1cm/½in nozzle, pipe the mixture into small balls in lines across the baking sheet.

Tip 1 - Gently rub the top of each choux pastry with a wet finger as this will help it make a crisper top. 7. Place the baking sheet into the oven. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden-brown

8. Remove from the oven and turn the oven off. Prick the base of each profiterole with a skewer. Place back onto the baking sheet with the hole in the base facing upwards and return to the oven for five minutes. Tip 2 - The warm air from the oven helps to dry

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS? SOLICITORS?

Freewheel Fabrications Ltd, Unit 6 Cornish Way, North Walsham, NR28 0AW

“It’s a common misconception that a larger firm is better.”

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor, qualified Family Mediator and Collaborative solicitor.

As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. The common misconception is that a larger local firm or city firm is better but this is incorrect. A client just pays more.

When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I am one of the few solicitors that offffers a free first appointment so that clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision.

I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.

“I would say to any potential client to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.

Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 0 1263 8 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk 01263 823465

Raise funds for your club or charity in The Three Peaks (Norfolk) Challenge

Sheringham Carnival introduced this event 2015 as a fun way to help people raise money for their own club, favourite local charity or community project.

Sheringham Carnival demands no monies - anyone who obtains sponsorship gets to keep it all to donate to whichever club, charity or project they want. Being under the umbrella of Sheringham Carnival means the event is already talked about and has plenty of local advertising.

All people have to do is take part and get themselves sponsored to complete the 5k route in any way they feel comfortable by walking, running, ambling, hopping... in a crazy costume maybe?

The challenge involves climbing up Beeston Hill, then down the other side. Following the well signed path to Incleboro Hill, then across to Stone Hill and back down Briton’s Lane to the start. Last year the finishing post was a joyous place as participants were absolutely elated with themselves for having ‘done the challenge’. The youngest entrant was five and the oldest was in his nineties. Both completed the course and received their wellearned certificate – as did everyone who took part.

Sheringham Independent 438

Some comments from last year’s entrants: • “That was REALLY great” • “am so proud of myself” – • “I’ve lived here all my life and have now seen paths I didn’t know existed!” • “next year I am going to run it” • “next year I am going to do it in fancy dress and get more sponsorship”

There was quite an assumption that there was going to be a “next year” and we hate to disappoint, so here it is again, The Three Peaks (Norfolk) Challenge on Saturday 13 August.

Some suggestions for whom you could raise money - your school, football club, rugby club, pre-school & nursery, youth group, bowls club, lunch club, community project… .. anything. Maybe your hall needs a new roof or a lick of paint? You might even consider raising money for the Carnival!

Sponsorship forms are now available by contacting Paula Popham on 01263 823546. You can start getting sponsors as soon as you like. The sooner you start the more money you could raise for your club, charity or project!

• There is a charge of £1 per adult to enter, accompanied children go free. No entry fee if you have raised at least £5 sponsorship. • Registration at 10am on the day. • Entry forms can be completed on the day and you will receive a competitor number. • You will need to provide a mobile phone number as, if you do not get your entry form

stamped by a marshal on each hill, we shall be ringing you to find out where you are! • If you decide to leave the course and go shopping, please phone one of the marshals so that we don’t have to send out a search party.

The main thing is it’s a fun event so come along and enjoy yourself and at the same time raise money for a cause you believe in.

Music at the Muckleburgh Collection

Sir Michael Savory, owner of the Muckleburgh Military collection, and Jane Bussey, Musical Director of the Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band, discuss the music programmes for two forthcoming concerts at the Museum. These occasions are not new events. Sir Michael invited the band to appear twice last year and due to the popularity of the occasions has suggested the local band return in 2016 to perform on 1 May and 4 September at 2pm.

On these dates visitors can make a leisurely tour of the museum, admiring the huge collection of military memorabilia, learning something of its history, and then, in the afternoon sit and listen to the music in the restaurant. Admission charges and opening times can be found on the Museum web site - www.muckleburgh.co.uk but, for the price of a cup of tea and a piece of cake the band can be listened to for free.

Cantamus Concerts

Cantamus Choir, a 40 strong concert choir based in Southrepps, are gearing up for their final two performances under present conductor, David Ballard.

David has held the baton at Cantamus since September 2010, and in that time the choir has performed across Norfolk venues in works as diverse as choral repertory mainstays such as Faure’s Requiem and Vivaldi’s Gloria, through to smaller scale works, sacred and secular, contemporary and classic.

The final two concerts will be at West Runton Parish Church (Saturday 14 May at 7pm admission by donation) and North Walsham Parish Church (Saturday 28 May 7pm, admission £5 as part of the churches exhibition of church vestments.) They will feature a selection of varied short pieces of music from both sides of the Atlantic and spanning 500 years of music making. The choir is particularly pleased to be showcasing music written in the early years of the 21st century by American composers such as Eric Whitacre, Stephen Paulus, and Morten

Lauridsen, whose work O Magnum Mysterium has sold more copies of sheet music than any other in American history. This will be interspersed with English music by composers such as Elgar and Parry as well as arrangements of traditional folk songs.

David Ballard said “I’ve been tremendously proud of what Cantamus has achieved in my five years at the helm, during which time the choir has been able to attain very high standards of amateur music making, and gain a reputation for the wide variety of music that has been showcased. The choir has also had a reputation for being a very friendly group, and I can assure everyone that the internal warmth of the choir will radiate through these performances of familiar and not-so-familiar music. There will also be solos from local Contralto Jo Oxbourgh and Flautist Jodie Taylor, so truly something for everyone!”

Celebrate Your Local Knitting Store ‘Owl Tree Crafts’ on Yarn Shop Day Whether you're a crochet expert, novice knitter or just fancy trying out a new craft, don't miss Yarn Shop Day

On 30th April 2016, the third annual Yarn Shop Day will take place in knitting and craft stores across the country, and Owl Tree Crafts is just one of the many stores delighted to be involved. The event has been organised by leading publication Let's Knit Magazine in a bid to celebrate Britain's much-loved independent wool shops.

“We’re very happy to be taking part,” said Jo, owner of Owl Tree Crafts “Yarn crafting is really growing in popularity, and customers rely on their local yarn shop for more than just needles and wool. It's a place to get advice and to feel part of a crafting community.”

On the day Owl Tree Crafts will be knitting and crocheting alfresco (weather permitting) for Operation Christmas Child (please bring your own needles, yarn will be provided). Inside we will be demonstrating how to get started in the art of knitting and Crochet and handing out free patterns, free worksheets for beginners and advice on needles, hooks and yarns to get you started. There will also be free refreshments and lots of good fun. “We are looking forward to welcoming customers old and new through the door, and hope our local knitters and crocheters will get involved.”

Come and celebrate with us ‘buying local’

Keep-In-Touch

Age Concern North Norfolk runs three Keep-In Touch (or KIT for short) Groups. They are local social groups for the over 55s, where people can meet new friends, learn new skills and get more involved within their local community. The groups are, essentially, coordinated by their own members, and those members can vary in age and circumstances. We have members who are widows, carers, married or single and we are always on the lookout for new members to join any of the groups at any time - many of our members go onto volunteer for our charity with a great range of volunteering opportunities available.

In no particular order, the three groups consist of:

• The Pop-In Group at Cromer who meet every Friday morning at The Cottage on Lounden Rd from 10am. A warm welcome always awaits you here, so go along for a cup of tea/coffee, a chat and make new friends. For more info contact our key volunteer at the Pop-In, Ann, on 01263 761508

• The Voyager KIT who meet at St. Nicholas Room on Vicarage Street in North Walsham; a friendly group that meet every Wednesday from 2-4pm. The group takes part in various fun activities and offer a great way to meet new friends. For more info contact our key volunteer at the Voyager, Linda, on 07541 795133

• Lastly, but by no means least, The KIT

Club that meet every fortnight in the Community Lounge at Anchor Close in Sheringham from 10am. All our welcome and the next group meeting is on 9th of May. For more info contact our key volunteer at the KIT Club, Ann, on 01263 761508

The Pop In Group at Cromer

We arrange outings, go for lunch, organise activities and trips as well as inviting speakers to all our groups. A talk by the local Arthritis Care coordinator is taking place at our Pop-In on Friday the 17 June.

Just some of the things we have planned for the coming few months include…

• A trip to the wonderful Blickling Gardens on 19 May to see the procession down the drive to commemorate the death of Anne Boleyn.

• The fantastic Marsham Hand Bells visit the Pop-In on Friday 20 May

• A trip on the train and a lovely meal in the picturesque setting of the riverbank in Norwich is planned for Friday 3 June.

• See the amazing animals at the popular Banham Zoo on Thursday 24 June.

• Learn more about one of the countries most

Charity Dinner Raises £610

Val & John would like to say a big thankyou to all who supported them in raising money for the Cromer Community & Hospital Friends at The Constantia Restaurant on 18 March.

We made a profit of £610, which will be used for the benefit of patients when attending Cromer & District Hospital or Benjamin Court.

Thank you to those who came to the dinner, those who donated a lovely selection of raffle prizes and Mr Graham Jones, who was our auctioneer for the evening. We also thank all the staff at The Constantia Restaurant who helped make the evening so enjoyable.

beautiful and iconic landcsapes, the Broads, with our trip to the Broads Museum in Stalham (with optional boat trip) on 14 July.

• Or join us for a day in Norwich on 3 August to take a look around the Cathedral and enjoy some of the city’s more hidden delights.

Some of regular events include a pub quiz, held every month at the New Inn at Roughton our next quiz is on 26 May. We also organise creative writing workshops, art groups, reminiscence and relaxation sessions, open gardens, tea parties, and poetry reading groups as well as gentle exercise classes in conjunction with Cromer Library.

There’s more to Age Concern North Norfolk than what you might think so come on, what are you waiting for, pop-in or give us a call and join one of our clubs TODAY! In fact, why just join one, you are free to join them all if you wish!

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER ALPINE PLANTS

The love of alpines becomes more and more absorbing for many gardeners. The charm of the miniature, the romantic association with the mountains which are their traditional home, the satisfaction of the many easy and floriferous species and as they become more expert, the challenge of those plants which are more difficult to grow. All these factors help to explain their attraction.

Broadly speaking, alpine plants are those found in mountainous districts, that is, in the high alpine pastures above the tree line and in the actual rocky cliffs arising from them. However, most gardeners use the term alpines to include any species suitable for growing in the rock garden, trough or unheated alpine house. In general, this means plants that are reasonably hardy, perennial and compact in habit (usually six inches or less).

It has been suggested that there are two extreme types of alpine plantsmen. There are those for whom a rockery is primarily a pleasant and colourful addition to the garden, and those whose delight is in the fascinating detail of each small plant – an enjoyment enhanced by segregating them in pots and pans and in bringing them nearer eye level in an alpine house, raised bed or cold frame.

Alpines can be grown in rock gardens, sinks and troughs, in gravel or cracks in the paving or in a cold greenhouse. A alpine house is of course the ideal, but an unheated greenhouse with very ample ventilation will give the plants the conditions they need. Whatever space and facilities you have there is room for alpines and here are some recommended plants that are in flower in my garden at the moment ■ Androsace sempervivoides – a fine Himalayan species which has rosettes of leathery leaves and spreads by runners. Develops mats from which arise numerous 5cm stems of pink flowers in April and May. An easy plant suitable for sunny screes or troughs.

■ Saxifraga ‘Peach Melba’. One of the many wonderful saxifrages that are available. This variety is best grown in pots but there are saxifrages available for every situation. ‘Peach Melba’ has

beautiul large peachy-pink, flared flowers in sprays amongst the light cushion of smallleaved evergreen foliage. It is a slow growing perennial spreading to 15cms and prefers full sun or partial shade.

■ Tulipa ‘Little Beauty’. A dwarf botanical tulip with a beautiful blend of bright red-pink flowers with purple-blue centres. Many flowers are produced from a single bulb in April and at a height of just 12cms are perfect for rockeries. Choose a sunny spot where possible, if not partial shade is fine. Plant around 10 cm. deep in well-drained soil for best results.

■ Arabis caucasica ‘Little Treasure White’ is a compact variety of this popular perennial rock plant, which forms an evergreen mound covered for weeks in spring with fragrant white flowers. It is attractive to bees. Height and spread 10-15cms by 25-30cms. Suitable for rock gardens, as ground cover or covering sunny banks. Thrives in most soils but likes full sun. Cut hard back after flowering to maintain a neat shape.

Alpines plants are widely available in garden centres and there are also local specialist nurseries such as West Acre Gardens near Swaffham. Bob Wilkinson

Easter Egg Hunt at The Patch - the best yet!

On Easter Saturday, over 100 families went along to The Patch, the Community Smallholding situated on the site of Sheringham's three schools, to take part in two hours of seasonal fun.

This was the third Easter Egg Hunt organised at The Patch and proved to be the best one yet - helped by the fact that despite the appalling weather forecast, it didn't rain! There were many other ‘Easter-related' activities available during the morning - children could have their face painted, make themselves an Easter mask or enter a colouring competition, and there was a raffle and a plant sale for the adults.

Matthew Smith, Business Manager at Sheringham Woodfield's School was delighted with the success of the event, saying "We raised £469.35 in the space of two hours, all of which will be put towards the running costs of The Patch. Our hens are very popular with the pupils who visit the site, and one of the things we'd like to do with some of the money is introduce new breeds of chicken.

"We owe a big thank you to Emma Furness, who gave her time to paint faces, and also to Smiths Clarity Solutions, Hansells, Blyth and Wright and Claws and Paws for their generosity and support. They all helped to make the Easter Egg Hunt a success." 14

High Sheriff joins Cromer RNLI Crew for a day

The outgoing High Sheriff of Norfolk joined Cromer RNLI crew on his last day of office.

Nicholas Pratt has enjoyed many experiences during his time in office, but rated joining the RNLI crew as being on ‘top of my list’ of experiences.

During his tour of t he station, the High Sheriff was keen to learn about Cromer’s all weather boat ‘Lester’ and how it came to be donated to the station through legacies.

He then enjoyed the trip to the windfarms, inspected some of the marker buoys and was able to observe the professionalism of the crew. Watching the crew run through a practice session, he was joined by his wife and youngest son.

After the return to shore and returning the safety outfits, the High Sheriff addressed the entire crew, saying ‘thank you for your hospitality. It is always said you should leave the best to last and definitely the chance to be on the lifeboat is the best.

The RNLI is one of this country’s most supported, loved and cherished of the charities. As High Sheriff of Norfolk I am proud to be associated with this county and proud of the crew and your representation of the work of the RNLI’ 15

THEATRE CAFE'S PLEA FOR HELPERS

A busy community cafe, which feeds a theatre with vital funds, is putting out a plea for helpers.

The Hub at Sheringham Little Theatre is a key income stream that helps the venue stage drama, music, cinema and live screenings. Its growing popularity, however, means it needs more volunteers to keep pace.

Theatre director Debbie Thompson said: "The Hub is increasingly busy and we are struggling to keep on top of clearing the tables. We are very flexible and would welcome anyone who can spare time - from a couple of hours a month to four hours a week." It was a chance to do rewarding work and be to be part of a team at a vibrant community arts centre, she added. "The money the coffee bar generates helps the theatre survive," said Mrs Thompson. The venue has a team of 86 volunteers doing a range of tasks. There is also a need for people to help run the evening bar in the 60-seat Hub - training is provided.

Anyone interested should contact Debbie Thompson on 01263 822117 debbie@sheringhamlittletheatre.com or drop into the Hub for a chat. It is open from 9.30am to 4pm six days a week. Closed Sundays.

SUMMER ACTOR HAS NURSING CAREER IN WINGS TOO

A young actor is learning nursing skills as well as lines as he prepares for a summer drama season in his native Norfolk.

“It can be tough for young actors and Ryan has shown a lot of maturity by adding nursing skills to help him provide finances while he furthers his dream.”

Ryan Starling is taking two roles in the Rep programme at Sheringham Little Theatre. But he is also studying a nursing degree to help bolster his finances, and “do something worthwhile,” during the spells between acting jobs, so the 24-year-old from North Walsham has been appearing in operating theatres as well as community arts theatres as he pursues his twin careers.

JOIN RYAN IN THE CAST A trio of volunteer actors are being sought to join the cast of the Railway Children. The professional production is looking for two females and a male to bolster the team by playing a variety of roles.

Theatre director Debbie Thompson said: "The roles are voluntary and would suit experienced actors who would like the opportunity to work in a professional environment. It could be a competent amateur from a community drama group, or a young person on a gap year before going to drama school."

Ryan explained “It is difficult to support yourself financially as an actor. Some people do bar and restaurant work, but I wanted to do something useful which also gave me the flexibility to put acting first.”

He is in the first year of a three year adult nursing degree course at the University of East Anglia which has also seen him gaining experience in operating theatres and community hospitals. He aims to be a ‘bank nurse’ - picking up stand-by hospital work when he is free, but also able to head off to auditions at the drop of a hat.

This summer Ryan will play Peter, one of the Railway Children in the classic adventure story, which is one of the Sheringham venue’s fivestrong summer drama line-up. He is also Tristram in the Alan Ayckbourn farce Taking Steps.

It will be Ryan’s third season at the theatre, whose youth outreach work has helped him forge his acting career.

Ryan was born and raised in North Walsham where dad Keith Starling is an electrical engineer and mum Diane a secretary at the junior school.

He first took to the stage at North Walsham High School, where he loved drama lessons and took the lead role in Macbeth. He joined the Sheringham Little Theatre’s outreach group, and went on to help run sessions for them.

Ryan also got involved with productions at Paston Sixth Form College and its Far East Theatre Company before heading to the Rose Bruford Drama School in Kent.

His first job as a newly-qualified professional actor was back at the Sheringham theatre as

schoolboy Salty in Teechers during the 2013 summer season when he also appeared in the farce Tom Dick and Harry. Ryan returned in 2014 for parts in Neville’s Island, Irma Vep, and Kiss of Death.

Ryan stressed that although he is working hard towards his nursing degree, drama remained his main goal and love.

“Acting is the main thing and always will be. It is just a case of there being no guarantees and I don’t want to end up struggling for money all my life,” he said.

The roles are a big commitment, with rehearsals in August and shows running from August 10-16 (7.30pm daily and matinees on the 11 and 13).

Specific requirements are: • One female aged 40 plus to play various characters • One female aged 18-30 with roles including a child • A male aged 18-30 playing a variety of roles including a child.

Auditions are on May 8 at Sheringham Little Theatre from 11am to 1pm. Applicants are asked to email a brief resume in advance to debbie@sheringhamlittletheatre.com

Sheringham Little Theatre director Debbie Thompson said “We are pleased and proud that our outreach work helped Ryan towards his chosen career – and delighted to showcase his skills again in our summer season.

Our mini coaches are also available for outings up to 26 people

Good NHS Care Experience

In recent months, there has been much criticism of the NHS, some I know is justified, but I feel strongly that it is not balanced by stories of good experiences of the care it can provide.

I therefore would like to tell you of our experience of local NHS hospitals and doctors when my partner, Carole Sheppard became seriously ill last year. Unfortunately Carole, at just 57, did not survive her illness which was diagnosed as terminal very early. However, the care provided during her illness was second to none.

Because the chemotherapy is potentially very toxic, we had frequent visits to NNUH to have Carole’s blood checked. During all of these visits, we had nothing but admiration for the way the staff in the Colney Unit and the Acute Oncology Dept. treated both Carole and myself. It was clear that they worked under a lot of pressure, but at no time did that affect their professionalism and dedication to providing the best care they could.

As Carole’s disease progressed, so her mobility decreased and eventually she couldn’t leave home. At this stage, her care transferred to the community In 2014 after experiencing nursing team and Paston Surgery severe neck pain, it was in North Walsham. Again, the discovered that cancer had care provided was outstanding. eroded three of Carole’s Co-ordination between the vertebrae. Despite being a various teams was excellent Andy Aitken and Ruby Mabbs (Carole’s non smoker all her life, the and, as Carole became less Mum) presenting a hamper of tea and cancer had originated in her coffee for the nursing staff at PBL (Nicola mobile, every potentially helpful lung and had spread to her piece of equipment was provided Ritchie, Lynne Eastick, Julie Hoath, spine. It was established that within a day or two. While Natalie Gooch. Angela Beard) the lung cancer was an I was providing the EGFR mutation, a type of necessary day to day cancer increasingly affecting younger women practical care, we had almost daily visits or who are non smokers. There are many different contact from the Community Nursing Team, mutations and Carole’s was one that her oncologist District Nursing Team, and Doctor Bowman at NNUH had not seen before. However, she did a at Paston Surgery, each one adding to the lot of research and discovered that a common oral jigsaw of solutions to help us cope with a fast chemotherapy tablet had been effective at slowing changing situation. At no time did we ever the development of the cancer in a small number of feel we were alone in our battle to make life cases. In addition to radiotherapy to deal with the as comfortable as possible for Carole. cancer in Carole’s spine, the oral chemotherapy had an almost immediate effect and allowed Carole to have a relatively good life for almost nine months.

However, by the end of November 2015 it became obvious that Carole’s needs were too complex to be managed at home and she was offered a bed at Priscilla Bacon Lodge palliative care unit at The Colman Hospital in Norwich. Our experience of the care provided at PBL was absolutely outstanding, I would say exemplary, and it made a huge difference to Carole’s comfort, security and happiness in the last few weeks of her life. Also to my own well being, as all my worries about her care and contentment

were taken away. This is very much a patient centred approach with the wellbeing of the patient at the forefront of the care provided. Every single member of staff we met or observed did everything possible to ensure that patients were as comfortable as possible, as pain free as possible, as content as possible, and received the best medical treatment available. They showed immense compassion and patience in sometimes difficult circumstance, and although always busy, made time to talk to us about Carole’s condition and treatment, giving us options when they were available, or telling us difficult news in a caring and sympathetic way. We were not alone in this experience as we saw and heard the other patients receive this same level of care.

I think it is important that the outstanding staff who go well beyond the call of duty in providing care to those with life limiting illnesses, receive recognition of their professionalism, dedication, care and compassion, which is why I am asking you to publish our story. We know that finances in the NHS are stretched to the limit so Carole asked that friends and family should make donations to Priscilla Bacon Lodge in lieu of flowers at her funeral, and on Wednesday 6 April, along with Carole’s mum Ruby, I was proud to represent those friends and family to present cheques for a total of £3220 to the PBL Support Group in memory of Carole. Every penny will go to improving the experience of patients and providing even better facilities for staff at PBL. Carole Sheppard

The palliative care provision in Norfolk is a service we hear very little about, and in our experience deserves more positive reports on the care they provide. Andy Aitken

Recently Asked Questions and Answers

from the Clapham & Collinge Business Support team By Philip Lumb, Consultant Solicitor in the Business Support Team

Q1 I created an app which did well over Christmas & made some money. Do I have to tell my employer?

This will largely depend upon what is contained in your employment contract and the circumstances in which the app was created. Many employment contracts contain provisions which mean that anything created in the employer's time (i.e. your working hours) will belong to the employer and not to you. If you created the app during working hours, and/or on work equipment, it could infer that the app does in fact belong to your employer, in which case you would need to notify them and account for any money made. There may also be clauses in your employment contract which restrict you from operating in competition with your employer. Depending on the wording of the restrictions, you may be in breach of your contract if your app competes with your employer's products and/or services.

Q2 I am looking at buying a Franchise in 2016. How could a Solicitor help me choose the right opportunity?

A Solicitor will meet with you to ascertain your objectives and what you are seeking from the opportunity. They will then help by reviewing the franchise agreement, explaining the terms of business and assessing whether it is a good fit for your objectives. They can also help by trying to negotiate better or more suitable terms of the agreement for you if you want them to do so. There are many aspects to consider when buying a franchise, such as intellectual property rights and what licences and/or ownership you have in relation them. You will also need to give consideration to employment matters, such as having contracts of employment for any employees you may take on and policies and procedures for matters such as grievances and disciplinary issues. If you require a premises for your franchise, a solicitor can also help you with negotiating the terms of a lease and advise as to the title of the building too, for example by checking if there are any covenants which will prohibit you from carrying out the business activity. Solicitors are usually unable to give financial advice so bear in mind you are also likely to want to speak to an independent financial adviser to discuss aspects arising from the accounts and to advise more generally on the financial opportunities different franchises may offer. Whenever considering buying a franchise it is worth bearing in mind the British Franchise Association Code of Ethics, which governs the behaviour of franchise practitioners.

Q3 I see a lot about crowdfunding investments these days. Are they regulated under UK law like other investment vehicles?

Crowdfunding has become very popular recently as it helps entrepreneurs reach a large number of people who each invest a small amount in a new business to help it reach its funding objective. There are three forms of crowdfunding: donation (people give money to organisations whose activities they want to support), debt (money is lent to the organisation in return for interest payments and a repayment of the capital over a period of time) and equity (direct or indirect investment by buying products such as shares or debentures). The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) established industry regulation last year for debt-based and investment-based crowdfunding, but it is based on the type of product offered rather than the risk profile of the business that will benefit from the investment. As these forms of crowdfunding are activities regulated by the FCA under the Financial Services and Markets Act (FSMA), you should make sure that only a person or firm authorised by the FCA advises you in relation to this. Donation-based crowdfunding is not included in the regulation. Sheringham Independent 438

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Harvey is making good progress and we can now see what colour his coat will be. We are giving him some more time before sending his bloods off to be checked, which will confirm whether he is FIV positive or not but, in the meantime, he is receiving lots of fuss from his carers as he is a really affectionate cat that loves lots of attention and cuddles and one we all find takes up a great deal of our time.

We recently had 4 cats handed into our care because their owners could no longer look after them. All of Harvey, very friendly them are quite young and also unneutered (with one being heavily pregnant and kittens due any day). FIV positive cat Because the male cats had several scratches, our vets advised we blooded tested the younger three when they were neutered. Unfortunately, once again, we had an FIV positive result and are at present awaiting the result of further tests. Although Garfie had been living with the other cats, it was necessary to separate him from his family and move him to a pen on his own to avoid the risk of infecting them. His vet advised that, although you often get false positive results, negative results are usually accurate. The pregnant cat will need to be tested in due course and, depending on the result of that test, the kittens may need to be tested too, People often query why we promote neutering the male cats as well as the females. This is because the virus is picked up primarily through fighting or mating (although an infected female can also pass it on to her kittens). Unfortunately, unlike FELV, there is no vaccine available to protect your cat.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign. If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858 or visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

Indoor meeting - Nick Acheson 'Big Cat Quest' on 28 April 19:30 - 21:30 at Aylmerton Village Hall, aylmertonvillagehall.wix.com/northnorfolk

Nick Acheson grew up watching Bitterns and Bog Bush-Crickets in North Norfolk. A year spent in the Camargue and Crau during his French literature degree inspired him to seek bigger, wilder landscapes and, on completing his MSc, he moved to Bolivia. Here he spent ten glorious years ringing James' Flamingos and austral migrant flycatchers, lamping for Maned Wolves and Giant Armadillos, working with AymarĂĄ, Quechua and Chiquitano indigenous people on sustainable development projects, teaching yoga, and whistling sweet nothings to Golden-headed Quetzals. Yoga then took him to India, where he has spent almost three years tracking Tigers and Snow Leopards, cruising on the Brahmaputra, and speaking clumsy Hindi. On return to the UK he worked for two years for Norfolk Wildlife Trust and he continues to work freelance for NWT, RSWT and the Hawk and Owl Trust. When not shedding tears to the sound of Indris in Madagascar or watching Walruses and Belugas from zodiacs in the arctic, he thinks, writes and listens to Bach in a flint cottage by a duckpond and swims in the sea off North Norfolk. Please park along Church Road or in the overflow car park at the church. A torch might be helpful, as the village has no street lighting. To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing. NENBC 'The Big Sit' 8 May 04:00 - 04:00 - the aim of the Big Sit is to record the total number of species, seen from within a single 17ft circle, in a maximum 24 hour period, though most sites operate from dawn to dusk. Big Sit sites in the NENBC recording area currently include Felbrigg Park, Beeston Bump, Holt Lowes and Muckleburgh Hill. Members are encouraged to visit these locations and share in the fun. Anyone can participate - even create your own circle. From doing the Big Sit we hope to gain valuable data about visible migration and the birds in our area. Results will be collated and published in the NENBC newsletter (the Pied Flyer). If you are interested in creating a new Big Sit location, email us with the details at info@nenbc.co.uk by Friday 29 April.

Now in its 12th year, the Norfolk Coast Partnership has helped fund over 60 projects via the Sustainable Development Fund; investing just under £1/2 million directly into the communities of the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), realising a total of £1.5 million of the projects total value into the area.

This year, the fund application process has been simplified and has now been opened up to smaller grants in order to try to attract more local community groups. There is a wealth of supportive documentation on line to help with your application. Take a look at the website www.norfolkcoastaonb.org.uk to find out more, see previously funded projects and take the checklist test.

The Best Gig on the North Sea Comes of Age

Born out of a one-off concert at Cromer’s historic Pavilion Theatre featuring Fairport Convention in 1998, this May sees Norfolk’s flagship folk and roots event ‘Folk on the Pier’ celebrating 18 years since its inception in 1999.

Moreover it now proudly boasts the patronage of none other than the veritable ‘Godfather of Folk-Rock’, Ashley Hutchings MBE, who keenly accepted the post in 2014, often citing the Cromer festival as a ‘friendly indoor mini-Cropredy’ From the start the festival was created by, produced, directed and for many years now funded by Scott Butler, a long-time fan of many aspects of folk and roots music who unashamedly admits a longstanding penchant for English Folk-Rock, the genre that has always formed the bedrock repertoire of this annual popular event.

Like most festivals, ‘Folk on the Pier’ has had its ups and downs, including a particularly difficult year in 2004 when the Pavilion Theatre was not available due to pier renovation works, and found itself decanted

to marquees on a clifftop car park in Cromer, enduring some of the most inclement unseasonal weather possible to add to its difficulties. Most importantly though it didn’t miss a year and cold marquees aside, the festival’s ever increasing and devoted audience year on year instantly rebook around 30% of the full weekend tickets for the next year’s event. Sunday morning on Cromer Pier traditionally witnesses a substantial queue of regular audience politely waiting to snap up their favourite seat, without a single act for the following year having been announced!

However, the success of ‘Folk on the Pier’ is not just about programming, it must be said that the Pavilion Theatre is a major part of the magic and as well as a superb acoustic, as a celebrated variety theatre, has a unique atmosphere, a characteristic that Mr Butler has always been mindful of when programming artists. ‘Artists love playing the venue, and It was

Holt and District Probus Club

Fairport’s Dave Pegg who in 1998 first coined the expression ‘the Best Gig on the North Sea’, which has been the festival’s slogan ever since.’ says Scott.

This year’s line-up, if bookings are anything to go by, is as strong and varied as ever and includes performances from the likes of Steve Tilston, Richard Digance, Welsh group Calan, the Spikedrivers, Nancy Kerr and the Sweet Visitor Band, the Urban Folk Quartet and many more. Fairport also return and there is another unique UK performance from Breton squeezebox maestro Fred Guichen, as well as dynamic dance and music from the Demon Barbers XL Show. The usual fringe programme will also be on offer around Cromer. More details about the 2016 event can be found at www.folkonthepier.co.uk Folk on the Pier 2016 takes place Friday 6 to Sunday 8 May at Pavilion Theatre, Cromer Pier and around town. Main concerts 2pm and 7.30pm each day. Ticket prices – afternoon concerts £17.50 evening concerts £19.50. Box office 01263 512495.

Holt and District Probus Club elected a new Committee at their Annual General Meeting on 7 March.

After the usual splendid lunch at The Feathers, Treasurer John Nicholson reported a favourable financial year, Secretary Eric Dear reported an increase in membership and Chairman for the day John Evans thanked them and the members for another successful and enjoyable year.

Alan Mason was elected Chairman, Eric Dear was re-elected Secretary and Ray Morgan was elected Treasurer.

For the coming year, members can look forward to an interesting and varied programme with speakers on such diverse topics as wartime Holt, cerebral palsy and in-flight aircraft refuelling, among others!

Holt and District Probus Club meets at The Feathers, Holt, on the first Thursday in every month and enquiries about membership (or a trial visit - visitors are most welcome) should be made to Secretary Eric Dear on 01263 823207. The AGM of Christmas in Sheringham will be held at St Andrews Church, Cromer Road, Sheringham on 5 June at 7.30pm. 27

Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club

Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club would like to thank all who enjoyed our charity Fashion Show at M & Co in Cromer. We are pleased to report that we were able to add to our funds for local charities and good causes. We hope that all those who attended found the evening as enjoyable as our own members did.

We are now starting a new season of fund raising events, during the spring to the autumn period. One of the highlights of this is a special sponsored event by our current Lion President Anton Elliott.

Lion President Anton will this year be celebrating his 70th birthday, and to mark this event, supported by his family, he will be taking part in travelling down the longest zip wire in Europe! The zip wire is at Zip World, Llechwedd Slate Caverns, Blaenau Ffestiniog in Snowdonia. This exciting ride is over one mile long and, during the descent, will reach speeds around 100mph!. Anton will be hanging from the wire in a horizontal position!

Lion President Anton is doing this to raise funds for his chosen charity, North Norfolk Branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, so we are asking everyone to sponsor Anton in this event.

We would, at this point, like to emphasise that the costs of this ‘ride’ are being paid by Anton's family as a birthday present and all sponsorship money will be paid to the named society. No money will be taken for any other reason. Details of how to sponsor this are available below.

We will be collecting at various points in Sheringham, Cromer and Holt, plus at various stores, so please put in as much as you can afford as all money collected goes to our chosen local charities, and no money is used for any other reason.

We are still looking for new members to help us to help others, so please contact our Secretary Lion Brian, details below. We are a friendly bunch of both sexes, with no age limit, so everyone is welcome. We have a very varied programme of social events as well as fundraising for our local charities.

For further details on any of our events, or to sponsor Lion President Anton, please contact our Secretary, Lion Brian Harris on 01263 821276 brihaz@btinternet.com

Janet Ellis - Writing for Charity

They say everyone has a book in them. I think this is very true but in my case, I have written three.

Let’s just say one book led to another. It is very rewarding when you see your book in print with its shiny cover and more importantly with your name on the cover! But for me, it’s more than just publishing books. My mission is to sell as many books as I can so I can donate the profits on sales to two very deserving charities, Cancer Research UK and the British Heart Foundation. You can read the reasons why I have chosen these two charities on Clifftop Publishing’s website www.clifftoppublishing.com.

The website also provides details about my Greek themed books. All are available to purchase through Amazon in both paperback and Kindle versions. The first to be published was ‘Timotheus Pserimos Puss’, a light hearted short story about a cat. This was followed by ‘On the Verge’, a novel based on a young woman’s diaries. Then there is my book of recipes which incorporates travelogues and is titled, ‘The 3Rs – Recipes Reflections & Reminsicences’. By the way, you don’t have to like Greece to enjoy my books.

I will be at the Overstrand Summer Fair on 24 July, where you can take a look at samples of my books, as well as being able to purchase signed copies. In October, as part of this year’s COAST programme of events, I will be giving a talk titled, ‘Writing by the Sea’. This will be an informal event where I will cover the pros and cons of self-publishing. By then I plan to have completed my fourth book - a collection of short stories.

&'

If you buy one or all of my books – I do hope you enjoy my stories and recipes.

Dear Margaret,

Issy and Nelly made £115 for the Nurses Fund at their sale on Easter Saturday.

They had a lovely time, especially when the town crier Tony Nelson

gave them some publicity!

AWARENESS WEEKS:

Parkinson’s 18 – 24 April & Bowen Therapy 12 – 18 April

The overlap of Parkinson’s and Bowen Therapy Awareness Weeks gave me the idea to choose Parkinson’s as my ‘Awareness Subject’.

My professional association (Bowen Association UK) asked individual therapists to get out there in the community to bring awareness to the benefits of Bowen.

Parkinson’s is close to my heart as my brother (one of twins) was diagnosed some eight years ago, aged only 52. This has given me an insight in Parkinson’s with its many symptoms, its unpredictability and life-changing challenges.

So what’s on offer? I invite those with Parkinson’s /the symptoms of Parkinson’s and those affected by Parkinson’s (wider family, carer, friend etc) to come and have a 30 min hands on treatment – no charge – no further commitment. Just some time for you to relax and experience a Bowen Treatment.

What is Bowen Technique? The Bowen Technique is a drug-free, noninvasive, hands-on therapy, mainly done through light clothing, with the client sitting, lying or standing. Small rolling-type movements are performed over muscles, tendons, ligaments and soft tissue at precise points on the body. One of the most profound effects Bowen can have is in shifting the Autonomic Nervous System, which controls over 80% of our body’s functions –from sympathetic to parasympathetic dominance.

Cromer RNLI Open Boathouse

This subtle but dynamic process allows the body to release stress at a very deep level, re-align and address imbalances in functions and chemical composition and, as far as possible, restore homeostasis (physiological equilibrium) within the body.

As well as providing Parkinson’s and Stroke care, conditions treated include muscularskeletal problems such as back, neck, shoulder, hip and knee pain (also post-replacement), whiplash, tennis elbow, frozen shoulder, carpel tunnel syndrome and sports injuries. Bowen can also help with a large variety of other conditions such as asthma, hay fever, eczema, migraine, IBS, high blood pressure, Bell’s palsy, dystonia, depression, anxiety, addiction, stress, hormonal imbalance, MS, ME and fibromyalgia.

Cornelis van der Does BTAA BAUK is an Advanced Level Practitioner of The Bowen Therapy, registered for over 20 years with the Bowen Association (UK), which requires members to maintain annual CPD courses, insurance cover and 1st Aid. In addition, he is ITEC A&Ph qualified.

The Holt Bowen clinic is at the Holt Consulting Rooms in Church Street. To book please call in or telephone reception on 01263 711712 or 01263 825438, 07944 099135 email eowenclinicnorfolk@gmail.com

Clinics also at Aldborough Surgery, Cromer, Sheringham and Norwich. Home visits by arrangement.

Cromer RNLI is holding an open boathouse on Sunday 1 May from 10am to 1pm.

Come along and see our lifeboat Lester at our open day. The boathouse at the end of the pier will be open from 10am to 1pm on Sunday 3rd May 2015. Meet the crew, ask questions, enjoy the refreshments provided by the Ladies Lifeboat Guild and help raise money for Cromer’s lifeboat.

New guide to care and support in Norfolk – a crucial time for information

A new, updated Norfolk Guide to Care and Support for Adults has recently been published in association with Norfolk County Council. It gives readers crucial information on how to access, and pay for, care services throughout Norfolk.

With Government plans to cap the costs of social care now postponed, it’s never been more important to have impartial information to guide you through choosing and paying for care and support. The guide helps readers to understand their options, highlights where to go for advice and gives information on how the paying for care system works. With no cap on care costs at present, this independent information is invaluable to help navigate the system.

The new edition of the Norfolk Guide to Care and Support for Adults and accompanying website give information on all aspects of arranging care and support in Norfolk. It includes how to stay independent for as long as possible, the different care and support options available and what to look for when choosing a care provider. It also offers guidance on important issues such as paying for care and what financial assistance may be available from the local authority. There are comprehensive

listings of all registered care services throughout Norfolk, plus checklists to help you ask the right questions when visiting services.

For free copies of the Norfolk Guide to Care and Support for Adults contact Norfolk County Council on 0344 800 8020. It is also available throughout the region from outlets including Citizens Advice Bureaus, hospitals, Community Services, Age UK and the Alzheimer’s Society. It can be downloaded www.carechoices.co.uk and is available in spoken word. Further help and information can be accessed via the guide’s free telephone helpline on 0800 389 2077.

Robert Chamberlain, Managing Director of the guide’s publisher, Care Choices, commented “This is an invaluable source of information for anyone considering short or long term care in Norfolk, and contains vital information to help people decide what type of care and support is best for them.

“With no cap on the cost of care, finding a care service for yourself or a loved one that meets their needs and is affordable can be a daunting and unfamiliar task. This new Norfolk Guide to Care and ‘Pie in the Sky’ Support for Adults

Care Choices is the UK’s largest independent publisher for social care and adults with additional needs. It is also the largest publisher of care directories for local authorities in England.

If a vote to leave the European Union is a ‘leap into the dark’, a vote to remain must be ‘pie in the sky’.

David Cameron is now advocating that we should remain in a reformed EU which he failed to reform. If the EU failed to listen to him with the threat of our withdrawal hanging over it, what chance is there of any influence or reform in the future? The position of the Labour party is even worse – it is suggesting that we should vote for an EU which does not exist and is very unlikely to manifest itself for many years to come if ever. For me a leap into the dark is the better option. At least that way I know that I will be living in a democratic and proud country where I will, along with my fellow British citizens, have the freedom to control our own destiny. Yours sincerely , David Ramsbotham, UKIP County Councillor, Melton Constable Division
