Sheringham Museum welcomes the Two Ronnies to its high street shop scene
Over the winter, local Sheringham Artist Colin Seal has helped transform an empty shop on Sheringham (Museum) High Street into a 1930’s replica of how Blyth and Wright Ironmongers appeared.
This completes the High Street scene within the museum galleries in what was an unused area, with a strange door leading to a 5 metre drop below. The work was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and North Norfolk District Council as part of the redevelopment project at the museum, which is now nearing completion.
The Sheringham Museum permanent galleries reopened to the public two weeks ahead of schedule in April 2016 and they are currently putting the finishing touches to its new £1.4 Million Education, Archive and Exhibition centre which is scheduled to open on time on 1 July with an exhibition about the local and national knitting drive during the First World War. The work Colin Seal has undertaken completes the works to the internal existing areas of the museum – creating new displays for people to explore and enjoy.

Sheringham Museum welcomes the Two Ronnies to its high street shop scene
Continued from front cover... To celebrate the re-opening of the museum high street scene to the public, Ronnie Wright, owner of Blyth and Wrights ironmongers, was invited to the museum with his son Chris to view the work and pose with a life-size cut out. The museum has also been donated a mangle which was in the window display of Blyth and Wright for the last 10 years to finish the exhibition off along with a selection of current ironmongery sold in the shop today.
Ronnie, who is now in his mid-80s, was delighted with the work Colin has done and grateful to the museum for adding his shop to their display of other notable Sheringham businesses, including Pratt the Sadlers and Cadman the Chemist. Museum Manager, Philip Miles said “The strange doorway to nowhere was a legacy of the old Mo building which was never designed to be a museum and never really felt part of the museum displays. Colin has done an amazing job this winter for us

in keeping true to the historic appearance of the shop front scene – including choosing colours used in the 1930s and applying his heritage signwriting skills with a 1930s font. We were delighted that Mr Wright was able to join us in celebrating this addition to our museum high street shops.”
Obituary Mr Kenneth Jackson
To all the people who knew our father, Mr Kenneth Jackson, he passed away on 5 June 2016.
He was a colourful character, one way or another. Always chatting to people on his way around the town, you may have seen him whizzing about on his scooter. Perhaps annoying him with one of his jokes, good or bad. Singing to them or making up a verse or two to do with what they were doing.
These last few months though he has been struggling – his mobility was getting worse and he was getting frustrated because he was so slow – he laughed and said ‘a snail goes quicker than I can now’.
He achieved a lot in his life, did many different jobs, being able to turn his hand to most things.
He loved travelling and had been all over the world, made many friends en route and kept in touch via computer with some.
He will be sadly missed. We love you, rest in peace Dad Sandy and Stan
AND NOW FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT … Following their successful production of the popular comedy 'Outside Edge' in January this year, North Norfolk-based amateur dramatic group Stage Direct's next production, 'The Thrill of Love' dramatises the story of the last woman to be hanged in Britain in 1955, and takes a new look at her final days.
When Ruth Ellis, a nightclub hostess meets wealthy, womanising David Blakely, the attraction is violent and ultimately, deadly. But why, when their relationship ends in murder, does she plead not guilty but offer no defence. Who is she protecting and who gave her the gun?
'The Thrill of Love' is a piece of modern criminal history, and although it was 1965 before hanging was finally abolished for murder, there is little doubt that the Ruth Ellis case raised questions as to whether hanging was an acceptable punishment for anyone in the 20th Century
Performances are at Aylsham High School, 22 and 23 July at 7.30pm. Tickets £10 are available from ticketsource.co.uk or at the door on the night.

Braised Beef
This month, Links chef Harley Robson presents his recipe for Braised Beef. Try it and see what you think. Harley’s finished dish is pictured left. Enjoy!
Ingredients 4 x 227/8oz Braising steaks 2 tbsp Sunflower oil 3 Medium onions (rough cut) 2 Carrot (peeled and rough cut) 4 Garlic cloves (peeled and crushed) 1 Large leek (rough cut and washed) 3 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 2 tbsp Tomato paste 500ml Beef stock (stock cubes can be used) 250ml Red wine Seasoning Method
Heat the oil in a large pan.
Season the beef and seal the meat both sides in the large pan (this is to keep the flavor in the meat whilst cooking)
Place the beef aside
Re-heat the large pan and then add all the vegetables and stir till they are tender
Add tomato paste and stir Add the beef
Add stock, Worcestershire and red wine
Cover and cook gently 140 degrees for 2 -2 ½ hrs until the meat is tender.
Serving Suggestion - horseradish mash and roasted caramelized root vegetables with braised liquor.
CROMER AND SHERINGHAM PROBUS CLUB
Unlike many other annual meetings around the country such as the national retailers and banks, the Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club AGM passed off relatively quietly with no calls for mass resignations, slashed salaries or removal of bonuses!
At the meeting held on 7 June at The Links Hotel, West Runton, the acting Secretary reported an increased membership of ten for the year bringing the present total to forty two. The Treasurer produced a healthy statement of accounts with the membership fee and luncheon cost held at the same low level for a further year.
After a few small changes to the Club rules were approved the outgoing
01263 824555 01263 838383 01263 579579
Chairman, Ron Coleman, handed over the chain of office to the incoming Chairman, Barry Tomlinson, and wished him well for the coming year.
The purpose of the Club is entirely social providing an environment for making and meeting friends and hearing informative and entertaining talks, many with local themes. Our next meeting is on 4 July when, following lunch, the speaker will be Brian Butcher posing the question ‘Anne Boleyn : Saint or Sinner?’
If you are a retired or nearly retired business or professional man and would be interested in meeting a very friendly group of men for lunch and to hear our next speaker please contact our Lunch Secretary, Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or visit our website, www.candsprobus.club

Do you have a Will or Lasting Power of Attorney?
A Will is a legal document which sets out your last wishes by allowing you to choose who receives your belongings and assets after you die. It is essential for you to make a Will whether or not you consider you have any possessions, or much money. If you do not have a Will when you die, then the Government decides under the Intestacy Rules how your money, property, or possessions are divided. If you are living with a partner and not married, then if you die without a Will your partner cannot inherit any part of your Estate.
A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document that allows you to appoint a friend or family member who you trust to make decisions in respect of your finances, property, or health if you are unable to, for example, if you are in an accident, lose mental capacity, etc. If you do not have a Lasting Power of Attorney and lose mental capacity, for whatever reason, then it may put your family in a difficult financial position by not being able to access your finances or able to deal with your property.

Norman Lamb calls for urgent action to communicate risks of drug in pregnant women
Norman Lamb, MP for North Norfolk, has tabled a parliamentary motion calling for urgent action to ensure that women are properly informed of the risks of a drug that can cause severe harm to an unborn child. Valproate is used for treating epilepsy and bipolar disorder – but has long been known to carry an increased risk of birth defects and developmental disorders in babies when taken by pregnant women. These can include spina bifida, malformations of the face, skull, limbs and organs, lower intelligence, poor speech and language skills, and memory problems. Following a Europe-wide review, which came about following pressure from Norman Lamb and campaigners during his time as Health Minister, the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has developed a Toolkit to ensure that women who are being prescribed valproate medicines are better informed about the risks of the drug during pregnancy. The Toolkit includes clearer warning labels on valproate packaging, information booklets for women, and a checklist to ensure that the risks have been properly discussed with the prescribing clinician. Although the Government says that the Toolkit should have been issued by the Limited Offer for first 202016, Projects only inreports Junethat MHRA and the manufacturer in February there have been many clinicians and pharmacies have not received these essential resources – meaning that women across the country remain at risk of taking the medicine without being fully aware of its dangers. The motion tabled by Norman Lamb calls on the MHRA, UK Government, and NHS England to intervene urgently to ensure that the Valproate Toolkit is received and properly utilised by clinicians and pharmacists nationwide. Norman Lamb said “It’s incredibly worrying that this crucial information Toolkit isn’t getting through to women as it should. Valproate can cause severe harm to an unborn child, and the decision to use the medicine should only be made when a woman is fully informed of its risks. These risks have been known by regulators for decades. Now that this Toolkit has finally been developed, the Government, MHRA and NHS England must waste absolutely no time in getting to the root of this problem. There has to be accountability.” Janet Williams and Emma Murphy from IN-FACT (The Independent Fetal Anti Convulsant Trust), which has campaigned for better communication of the risks www.norfolklandscapegardeners.co.uk of using valproate in pregnancy, said “IN-FACT worked closely with the MHRA to agree and disseminate the Valproate Toolkit. But because the MHRA has only Email norfolklandscapegardeners@gmail.com sent the toolkit to pharmacies and surgeries that subscribe to its alerts system, it seems that its distribution has been left largely in the hands of the drugs company. “This has caused system failure with this vital information not reaching women of child-bearing age, and therefore around 30,000 women prescribed valproate unable to make that all-important informed choice.”

Six of the Best!
North Norfolk Photographic Society held the second of its annual competitions on Wednesday 1 June. Most Camera Clubs hold ‘annual’ competitions, where their members are invited to vie for the ‘best of the best’ for the year, and having previously held the contest for projected pictures, it was now the turn of the prints.
Judge for the day was Dave Stewart, a professional photographer from Peterborough,
who amazingly has a passion for photography that still allows him to give up his evening to travel from his home to judge in Holt.
The competition was in two groups: for so-called novices (many really not novices at all) and advanced members.
Nine members entered the ‘Novice’ section and Dave Stewart thought five of their entries worth putting to one side for a second look. In the end, Rob Palethorpe’s ‘Late Sun at Cley’ was the winner - the Mill and marshes brightly lit by the sun under a dark, brooding sky. Michaela Bone was 2nd with ‘Heathland Reflections’ and Grace Glaister 3rd with ‘Emma’.

WET DOG ARRIVES IN SHERINGHAM
Almost four years to the day since opening in Cromer, the popular ‘Active Lifestyle Shop’ Wet Dog has now opened its doors on Station Road in Sheringham.
Owners Phil & Kay Weston had always hoped they could expand the business into the town and fulfil their plan to provide the same quality brands, quality service and competitive prices. Now after a very quick turnaround the shop has become a reality and the pair are really excited about being there and look forward to welcoming new and existing customers to the shop.
"Sheringham and its surrounding area has a whole new customer base for us to cater to," said Phil. "We found, from experience, that from a local customer perspective and also a visitor one, Sheringham has an audience that does not necessarily visit
Cromer to shop, and vice versa."
Garden Maintenance & Landscaping Grass & Hedge Cutting ~ Clearance & Tidying Fence Installations, Repairs & Painting Local man offering a friendly & reliable service Patio & Pathway Installations Competitive rates, free estimates given Property Maintenance & General DIY Fully Insured kerrybilly@vodafoneemail.co.uk
"As we found when opening in Cromer, the town lacks a specialist outlet catering to a Beach Lifestyle, with the brands everyone associates with ‘Surf’," said Kay. "Our aim is to offer the same well established names as in Cromer, such as: ANIMAL, WEIRDFISH, BILLABONG, SALTROCK, BRAKEBURN, OSPREY, etc., and to fulfil the needs of customers of all ages and sizes."
The couple will of course also bring their laid back, relaxed and friendly approach to the new shop ensuring their high levels of customer service and satisfaction are maintained, something that really sets them apart from others. Phil added, "Our philosophy has always been about ‘choice’, so
with the new shop, we have kept things the same, but different, and by that we mean the shops will stock the same brands but with different products available in each, therefore expanding the choice to our customers."
The shop will be open all year round and will stock swimwear, wetsuits, bodyboards, surfboards, surf accessories, beach shoes and flip flops as well as t-shirts, hoodies and sweaters, shorts, hats, sunglasses and bags and much more.
"We look forward to seeing you soon at 45 Station Road, Sheringham NR26 8RG or check our website www.wetdogsurfshop.co.uk. And you can call us on 01263 821444."
“Our website’s aim is to help you make the right, and

Former Mayor, Mr Peter Cox presented Part 3 of his talk, Mishaps and Misdemeanours of Shannocks earlier this month.
The information was gleaned from 20 years researching the Norfolk Record Office.
At times in Sheringham, the nearest jail was at Little Walshingham and the House of Corrections was at Aylsham. Births were not always registered, but 200 illegitimate births were registered - some from the nearby house of ill repute.
Deaths occurred due to consumption, adults as well as children. Deaths from cholera and typhoid were as the result of unsanitary conditions of drinking water and sewage.
John Barrow had 11 children and in 1785 Phoebe Cox had 17 children, five of whom died. Henry Ramey Upcher had 11 children.
By 1885, the rich were looking for places to live. Lady Battersea stayed at a house in Overstrand in the summer.
Two visitors died from typhoid after they returned from Sheringham believed to be caused from drinking water.
The filthy state of the beach was reported in the EDP and Norfolk Chronicle. This was due to refuse left on the beach by fishermen as well as sewage expected to be washed out to sea.
When new toilets were built on the promenade a fence had to be built to shield them from the guests staying at the Grand Hotel.
FREE local delivery on orders of £10.00 or more
Mr. Cox has worked many hours researching the history of Sheringham and claims he doesn't know everything, although people still ask questions when they visit his bookshop on St Peters Road.
Here's hoping books continue to be written and published in this digital age. Loraine Greer

Cromer Pier Show 2016 39 years of First Class Variety
From one of the UK’s most Famous Pier Theatres Bringing Audiences Talent from Norfolk to Australia Back for another recording breaking year, Cromer Pier Show is now the only ‘End-of-the-Pier’ show in the world and, if advance bookings are anything to go by, this year will see a high demand for tickets.
Headlining this year’s show is comedian Phil Butler, who last appeared in 1998 and 1999. Phil is truly a comedy act like no other, using his razor sharp wit to inject his hilarious take on entertainment. His stage skills include magic, juggling and ventriloquism which, added to his wealth of experience, has made Phil a hit at both mainstream and alternative venues.
Joining Phil is Australia’s favourite comedy juggler, James BuSTAR. James appeared on Australia’s Got Talent and is now a headline act at performances and festivals across the globe.
Making her first ever appearance at the Pavilion Theatre is Marea Smithson, a comedy impressionist from Norfolk. She has been impersonating people for as long as she can remember and began performing on stage at around the age of eighteen, after the girls at work (in the wage office at Rowntree Mackintosh) encouraged
her to enter the ‘Search for a Star’ talent contest at The Talk of The East in Norwich. Marea’s usual place of work is at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital, as a secretary in the radiology department, where she has worked for the past 25 years and, although she enjoys it, the chance of doing a summer season in Cromer was so different and exciting Marea could not say no. The Norfolk and Norwich has kindly allowed Marea to take a sabbatical so she can to take part in The Cromer Pier Show, a challenge that she is really looking forward to.

The ocean waves rise, touching the sky, Opal greens and peridot gleams, the sea is alive. Silver foam frothing like a Bailey’s drink, Crashing over ice and spilling over the brink. Birds attempt to keep hold of dry land, But the rain begins like the slap of a hand. It bristles the face, pale and cold, Grabs the hair ever so bold, Wraps around your bones until every inch is wet And for a warm bath you are incredibly set. Oh how I’ve missed this lovely June weather For this is Norfolk and there aint no place better.

St Andrews Methodist Church Flower Festival
Flower arrangers from towns and villages all over North Norfolk are busily planning for arguably the district’s premier flower festival, which takes place at St Andrew’s Methodist Church, Cromer Road, Sheringham from Thursday 7 July to Sunday 10 July.
Last year’s theme was ‘A Touch of Wonder’ and the theme was very cleverly interpreted.
The annual festival, which has been run for over 40 years, is a major event for both the church and the town and regularly attracts over 3000 visitors with several coach parties and many planning their holidays around the festival dates.
This year’s theme is ‘I AM’ and over 25 arrangements will depict this theme, with titles such as ‘I AM going to the zoo’, ‘I AM a fisherman’ and ‘I AM a bake off contestant’. Throughout the Festival background music, played mainly by organists, adds to the ambiance of the event.

You have goat to be kidding me!
North Norfolk District Council brings Britain’s oldest breed of goat to Cromer cliff to control scrubland.
A new habitat management project by NNDC hopes to keep an area of Cromer cliff under control with the introduction of goats.
Eight Bagot billy goats will be released into a fenced off area in June where their grazing will keep unwanted plant species and excessive growth to a minimum.
In the past, the cliff area has become overgrown, leading to a problem with litter embedded and snagged in bushes. The Bagot goats graze on rough materials rather than grass and will therefore keep plant growth over the area under control.
Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett, Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, said “This is an exciting project we hope the people of Cromer will be able to enjoy two-fold – for the habitat management the goats will offer and the enjoyment of having unusual animals in the town. Now residents and visitors will not only be able to enjoy the beautiful Cromer sunsets, but watch our Billy goats working hard to keep the town beautiful.”
The Bagot is believed to be Britain’s oldest breed of goat and unlike most other breeds - that favour mountains and uplands - it developed in the English lowlands. Bagots are hardy and easy to tame.
NNDC’s Cromer goats have been checked and monitored by a local vet and their welfare will continue to be appraised over their time on Cromer cliff. They will be surrounded by double livestock fencing that will be six foot tall at the bottom of the slope. The fences will be checked twice a day. Cllr Fitch-Tillett added “We must ask people not to feed or touch the goats because they have a job of work to do and we need them to not get distracted.”
The habitat grazing project was developed with support from Suffolk
Steam Trains to the Norfolk Broads
Wildlife Trust and the goats arrived with the District Council in April. Two came from the Dinosaur Park near Lenwade in Norfolk, and the other six from Levens Hall, Cumbria where they are raised as a semi-feral parkland breed. They have spent the past weeks getting used to one another and settling into their new group.
The goats will be released into the fenced-off area in June and remain until October or November when they will be taken to other NNDC land to graze over the winter. If the goats clear the land too rapidly they will be moved to other land for grazing.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW 2016 - ROYAL CONNECTIONS
The Queen made her 51st visit to the Chelsea Flower Show this year and there were many floral tributes to mark her 90th birthday. This made it a special occasion for all of us lucky enough to attend.
A grand floral arch was erected at the Bull Ring Entrance, inspired by a painting in the Royal Collection of a floral arch created to celebrate a visit of Queen Victoria to Reigate and follows a worldwide tradition of building triumphal arches. The arch was festooned with Britishgrown flowers. The arch was created by Shane Connolly, who was the florist responsible for directing the horticultural elements of the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and who possesses a Royal Warrant of Appointment to the Queen.
At the London Gate, the RHS created six ‘crowning’ moments, one on top of each of the six gate pillars. Each was planted with seasonal English favourites such as roses, clematis and foxgloves that spilt over the edges and climbed up the iron arches.
There was also a photographic exhibition of the Queen’s visits to Chelsea over the years and the celebrations continued in the Great Pavilion where a number of exhibitors tailored elements of their displays to mark the Queen’s birthday and the continuing connections between the Royal family and the Royal Horticultural Society.
First time exhibitors New Covent Garden Flower Market, managed to keep their creation secret until the last minute. On Saturday night,
four florists from London company Veevers Carter spent nearly eight hours creating a 10ft high 3D portrait of Her Majesty, using more than 4000 blooms in bands of vibrant colours. The familiar postage-stamp head was an intricate design incorporating three profiles in ascending sizes from the smallest in yellow-orange flowers, the middle-sized in pink-red, and the largest in blue-purple. The flower heads used were relatively small so the large hydrangeas were divided into individual florets to create a tapestry feel.
Society introduced the first pink and green indoor chrysanthemum, named ‘Princess Charlotte’ so that the youngest member of the family did not feel left out.
All-in-all there was much to see and enjoy at this year’s show and our day there was blessed with very warm weather. However, my lasting memory has nothing to do with royalty but is the display of hepaticas by Ashwood Nurseries. These are tricky perennials in the buttercup family requiring full sun in spring and deep shade in summer. I have lost my one and only hepatica but John Massey has mastered their cultivation and brought to Chelsea an enormous variety of these plants in many colours and, quite rightly, won the Diamond Jubilee Award for the best exhibit in the floral pavilion. Bob Wilkinson
This dramatic installation was built inside a wall made of 90 black flowermarket buckets and on the back of the wall were foliage and flowers in green and white arranged to look as natural as possible. To keep both sides of the display in mint condition throughout the week an extra 2000 stems were kept in reserve. SOME THINGS WERE MADE FOR EACH OTHER« Peter Beales Roses launched its ‘Sandringham’ rose reinforcing the company’s Norfolk roots. This deep pink, heavily scented shrub rose was chosen by the Duchess of Cornwall from a selection of three presented to her at the Sandringham Flower Show of 2014. The National Chrysanthemum

CARNIVAL OF THE ANIMALS
This term, children from five primary schools in North Norfolk have been taking part in an exciting and ambitious music, art and poetry project based around the orchestral work ‘Carnival of the Animals’ by Camille Saint-Saens.
On 13 July at 12.30pm the musicians from ‘Parnassus’, led by the internationally renowned conductor Peter Stark, will give a concert featuring ‘Carnival of the Animals’ at St Andrew’s Church, Holt, which up to fifty children from each of five partner primary schools - Holt, Gresham Village, Langham, Overstrand and Roughton - will be attending. There will also be a public performance at 6.30pm that evening.
During the first half of the summer term, children took part in art, music and poetry workshops, based on the animal theme, to inspire and add to the musical experience. These workshops have stimulated adventurous and imaginative ideas for the related art and poetry competitions.

The Carnival of the Animals project is being organised and part-funded by FALCON, with generous funding from the Arts Council of England and the Norfolk Arts Fund. It is being run in partnership with Holt Festival (who are funding the school’s concert), and is made possible by support of the five partner primary schools, as well as the Norfolk Library Service and the Rector of St Andrew’s Church, Holt.

Official openings for two North Norfolk grant recipients
Improvements at Cromer Lawn Tennis and Squash Club and Gimingham village hall. Two official openings have taken place of projects funded in part by the Big Society Fund.
On 3 June, Cromer Lawn Tennis and Squash Club opened their improved and extended table tennis building. The building will house activities including table tennis, yoga, pilates, aerobics, and Zumba.
A BSF grant of ÂŁ8,000 was awarded to be used towards the costs of removing the existing tin shed, upgrading the existing timber building and construction of a 5m x 10m timber extension to double the size of the current table tennis building. The Club match funded the project. Chairman Nick Amis thanked North Norfolk District Council at the opening event, saying the project could not have gone ahead without the grant. Tom FitzPatrick, leader of North Norfolk District Council and Chairman of the Big Society Fund Grants Panel, cut the ribbon on the extension and said “This type of project encourages healthy physical activity for all ages and we were delighted to be able to help with the funding.â€?
On 21 May, improvements to Gimingham village hall were unveiled, including replacement of the front doors, 100 new steel framed stacking chairs with fabric padded seats and an upgraded kitchen. A BSF grant of ÂŁ5,000 was agreed last September to go towards the work. North Norfolk District councillor Sue Arnold attended the event and said “The village hall, along with the church, is pivotal to the life of this community. “That community has come together to raise funds for the modernisation and it was very evident at the launch how positive this project has been for the people involved.â€?

Dear Margaret,
For all your gardening & landscaping requirements throughout Norfolk
I am writing to say a very big thank you to everyone who contributed to making last weekend such a successful one for Sheringham.

To all the individuals, groups, shops and businesses who decorated up to celebrate the Queen's 90th birthday. The houses, bunting and shop windows, together with everyone who dressed up in red white and blue for the birthday picnic on the Saturday, looked splendid. It was pleasing to see such a very large turnout, from a few days old to 90 + years young, for the party and people enjoyed themselves and the entertainment provided by local groups. After the forecast, the weather was an added bonus.

The classic car rally on the Sunday again attracted a large number of vehicles and people to the town. Another triumph for the Carnival committee. The few odd showers did not seem to deter people.
The North Norfolk Railway also attracted many visitors with their diesel weekend. I trust that as well as the many locals and visitors who enjoyed themselves, it will have proved to be a good start to the holiday season here in Sheringham.

I have not named individuals to say thank you to because there are so many involved to make a weekend like this so successful. Again, Sheringham has shown what a fantastic bunch of volunteers we have. You all know the valuable contribution that you have made to these events so thank you again.

WILLIAM IS CERTAINLY MAKING HIMSELF HEARD
William Johnson proudly displays the cup awarded to him for second place in the Solo Performer Section of this year’s East Anglia Brass Band Association Spring Competition, in which he competed against musicians of diverse ages.
William who is 12 years old plays bass trombone with the Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band and produces a quality of sound expected of more experienced musicians. However, his musical talent does stop there. William has achieved Grade 5 - 8 is the top grade - in the Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music examination, not only for trombone but for piano and music theory as well.

Our Reputation is built on Recommendation
John has amassed a huge amount of information about the way the war was managed in our area. There were large military camps at Weybourne and Stiffkey and Holt lay John Roebuck with on one of the country’s ‘Stoplines’. These were a facsimile of a lines at vulnerable points where it was felt WW II rifle there was particular danger of seaborne invasion by Germany. The idea was that in addition to barbed wire, anti-tank blocks, land mines and pill-boxes, the Home Guard would hold these lines until stronger military reinforcements could be brought in.
Holt contained the Area HQ being the ‘nodal point’ between Weybourne and Stiffkey and the radar stations at Cockthorpe, Bard Hill and West Beckham, as well as being not far from RAF stations at Langham, Little Snoring and Matlaske.
John said that during the war, Holt resounded to the noise of endless troop and vehicle movements and many of Holt’s houses, shops and pubs were requisitioned either as administrative or Home Guard premises, or as billets for the many personnel brought in to the area, vehicle parks, ammunition dumps and so on.

The speaker was Norma Howell, herself a Rotarian from Diss but also a volunteer for the charity Medical Detection Dogs. Members heard that dogs trained by this relatively new charity are not only alerting people with complex health conditions but also assisting the medical profession in the early detection of cancer.
The cost of training a cancer detection dog is £7,200 with an ongoing monthly cost of £600. President Roger Hill For training a medical alert assistance dog, the presents a cheque to cost rises to £11,200. In this area, over 60 dogs Medical Detection Dogs volunteer, Norma Howell are in operation throughout the country. Patron of the charity is The Duchess of Cornwall but, as yet, it receives no government funding, being wholly reliant on donations. Mrs Howell described the two sides to the charity - one trains and partners dogs to alert and support people who manage lifethreatening conditions, the other works in research in the early detection of cancers. Using their amazing sense of smell, the dogs can be trained to identify minute odour Some of the medical changes emitted prior to an emergency and detection dogs alert the person to take preventative action. Examples of this are Type 1 Diabetes, Addison’s Disease, Narcolepsy and severe allergies. ”Our dogs” she said “reduce paramedic call-outs and hospital admissions. In other words, they can save lives daily”.
She explained that there have been anecdotal reports for many years of dogs changing their behaviour around people with undiagnosed cancers - most notably bladder, colorectal, lung and prostate cancers. Dogs are trained using scent and breath samples from clients when they are experiencing a condition.
At the conclusion of the talk, the Rotary Club made a donation of £50, plus a collection among members.

Spring Notes from the Commons
The spring can be said to have been rather on the cool side for the most part and that herald of spring, the Primrose, was slow to bloom (03 March), also a pair of Mallard were seen on the pond. Mark Clements, a regular contributor to the Commons website, spotted a Tawny Owl being chased by a pair of Jays (06 March). If an owl is discovered during the day it often comes in for scolding and harassment from other birds. A Weasel made a brief appearance as it crossed a path. These are the UK’s smallest carnivore but for all that they often tackle prey larger than themselves. On sunny days the male Adders came out to bask and six were seen (10 March). Mark reported a Firecrest and a Brambling (11 March) and up to 12 Adders. A male Stonechat turned up (12 March) and stayed until the following day. Later the same day a Barn Owl was seen hunting over the central marsh. A Red Kite was seen drifting west by Mark (22 March) and up to 25 Redwings were also present. The sun brought out the Small Tortoiseshell butterflies (7) and on the heathy areas Green Tiger Beetles were noted. Earlier in the day a Woodlark was also seen feeding by the old pill-box. Another Red Kite, heading south this time, was observed (24 March) and two Slow-worms were found dead in a recently
burnt area, Mark again reported the sighting of a Firecrest and the first Peacock butterfly for the year. An Orange Underwing, an early day-flying species, was also noted. A third sighting this month of a Red Kite (27 March) was reported by Mark. In this case the unfortunate kite was being mobbed by two Carrion Crows. Mark later reported another sighting of the Firecrest (30 March) and the first Swallow over the Common (31 March). April started off sunny with bumble bees, hoverflies, butterflies etc., (01 April), all making the most of the good weather. Dark-edged Bee-flies or ‘Primrose Sprites’ were abundant. These are brown ‘furry’ insects with a distinctive wing cloud and a very long proboscis, which they insert into the ‘long neck’ of the Primrose flower to get at the nectar. Mark reported that the Firecrest was still present (04 April). The following day (05 April), Peacock, Small Tortoseshell and Comma butterflies were seen as was a Gorse Shieldbug. Jane Fairweather had a sighting of an early Common Whitethroat (13 April) and Mark saw a Grass Snake (14 April). A Fox, Firecrest, Barn Owl and an unexpected Ring Ouzel were noted by Mark (16 April). Two Mediterranean Gulls passed over the Common (17 April) and two
confiding Wheatears were present at the top of Pill-box Hill (18 April) also Mark heard the first Willow Warbler on site this year. The Willow Warbler seems to have deserted the Common in the last two years. This former common breeding bird seems to have been reduced to a passage migrant. Why this is isn’t clear as the habitat seems fine and its relative the Chiffchaff seems to be doing well. Nationally there has been an overall reduction in numbers of breeding birds throughout southern Britain over the last 25 years and as a result the bird is placed under an Amber List status in conservation priority. A Roe Deer was present (24 April) and Mark also spotted a female Redstart the following day (25 April). Moss Taylor noted a Peregrine Falcon heading west (29 April) and Mark saw a Fox, a Barn Owl and two Lesser Whitethroats.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Now that Harvey is much better he will be having another blood test, which will be sent to an external laboratory to confirm whether or not he is FIV positive. Once the result comes back, and depending on the result, he will be put up for adoption, possibly as an indoor cat. We will update you on the outcome next time.
Garfie, one of the other cats mentioned last time as being confirmed as FIV positive, has now left for a new home with another FIV positive cat. As he came from a multi cat household and is used to having feline companions, this is the ideal home for this lovely little lad.
Last time we mentioned the two kittens which are being hand reared and the importance of ensuring that to compensate for being without their mother’s milk, they get the next best start in life by providing good quality cat milk and food. We also mentioned the need to provide them with opportunities to interact with people and other animals and also to learn hunting and playing skills.
We had a steady flow of supporters and cat lovers to our Spring Sale on 14 May and raised £658 for the cats in care. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who came to our sale. Tickets are now available for the Hog Roast at Dilham which takes place on Sunday 10 July.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered
Another priority, not only with kittens but also all the cats, is to ensure that they are vaccinated to protect them from some of the serious infectious diseases (including FELV) which can affect felines. All our cats and kittens will have had, at least, their first injection before leaving our care and we pay for the second to be done with one of the three veterinary practices with whom we have accounts and which hold supplies of our vaccines. When a cat or kitten leaves for a new home we advise the new family not to let them go outside until at least two weeks after the second injection has been given. This is particularly important for kittens as the antibodies they received from their mothers milk will have depleted and they will be more susceptible to infection as a consequence. Booster injections are recommended to ensure the cat remains protected and the kitten/cat’s vet will be able to advise the new family when these should be given.

A summer scene
I walked up the hill and down to the stream, and drew in my breath at the colourful scene. A field of corn stirred in the breeze, sheep quietly grazed beneath the trees. Poppies, daisies and buttercups too helped to form this wonderful view. I sat and enjoyed my bread and cheese whilst listening to the hum of bees. Much later, I felt a chill as the sun went down behind the hill. Now it was time to cycle home, there’ll be other days when I can roam.

Read-throughs and auditions for a cleverly written comedy are being held at the end of June at the Friends Meeting House in Cremer Road, Sheringham.
The play, written by Andy Powrie, cleverly follows the story-line of The Great Escape, but instead of prisoners of war escaping from a POW camp in Germany, it’s two older ladies, escaping from their residential home.
Fed up of the repressive regime at the home, Dorothy and Ruth decide to escape. Their efforts finally succeed and they go on the run, pursued by the overbearing manager of the home, the police and Dorothy’s son, who wants to force her to sign a Power of Attorney document, so he can get control of her money. Taking evasive action where necessary, they attempt to reach a safe haven. But who can they trust? Will anyone see through their disguise? Do they evade capture or are they forced to go back to the home?
This play, originally titled ‘Climbing The Wall’, has been re-named ‘The Great Escape - from a Residential Home’ by the author.
The read-throughs and auditions are at the end of June on Monday 20, Thursday 23, Monday 27 and Thursday 30 at 7.30pm and are open to all. Rehearsals will be on Monday and Thursday evenings starting at the beginning of September and the production will be on at the Sheringham Little Theatre from Thursday 17 to Saturday 19 November.

North Norfolk District Council wins Empty Homes Award
The prestigious Empty Homes Innovation Award has been given to NNDC’s Enforcement Board for their innovative approach to bringing empty homes back into use.
The Award recognises the Board’s close working across Council departments to ensure projects are identified and plans actioned without delay.
Deputy Leader of North Norfolk District Council Judy Oliver said “We are incredibly proud to be given this award and I would like to offer my congratulations to the Enforcement Board. “The success of this group is about the momentum to make things happen. The Board is a significant strength of the Council, speeding up both actions and outcomes in relation to the most problematic empty or derelict sites.”
NNDC’s Enforcement Board has considered 127 cases since it was set up in 2012, with positive action being taken on 121 cases. David Gibbens Secretary of the Empty Homes Network said “Congratulations on this well-deserved success which will be an inspiration to other authorities up and down the country.”
The Award was presented by the Empty Homes Network at their annual conference in Birmingham in May.

CLASP 'Walking Out Of Darkness'
Norman Lamb, the Liberal Democrat MP for North Norfolk, has handed over a giant cheque to one of two local charities for which he recently fundraised.
The former health minister managed to raise over £3,500 during a 10 mile sponsored walk through London and presented a cheque to Mancroft Advice Project (MAP) in Norwich at the beginning of the month. He is due to do the same for the Holt Youth Project sometime later in June.
Dan Mobbs, CEO of MAP, praised Norman's efforts saying “It's great to see Norman showing his support for young people. We really appreciate how willing he is to promote our work with young people's mental health, so that young people can access expert help early on, preventing unnecessary distress and crisis.” The sponsored walk, called 'Walking Out Of Darkness', took place on Saturday 14 May and saw thousands of people walk 10 miles through London to end the stigma surrounding mental illness and signalled the start of Mental Health Awareness Week 2016 (16th to 22nd May).
Speaking about the charities Norman said “Each person doing the sponsored walk could raise funds for mental health charities of their choice and I decided that Organised by Counselling Life these two brilliant charities in Advice Suicide Prevention Norfolk deserved my support as Charity (CLASP Charity), a they do incredible work. The charity which aims to confront Holt Youth Project is an award the stigma surrounding mental Norman Lamb with volunteers on the CLASP sponsored walk winning project which runs and stress related illnesses, it preventative programmes that was the third time the walk had allow young people to reach their full potential and meet their own aspibeen organised. European Championships 2016 by Joel Lodge, our football correspondent
England 1 Russia 1
England played well against an average Russian side to kick off their Euro 2016 campaign. However they could only come out with a draw after a header in the dying minutes of the game.
England started in positive fashion with chances coming through attempts by Adam Lallana, who perhaps could have done better with them as they didn’t test the Russian goalkeeper Akinfeev, with one shot being straight at him and the other going narrowly wide. One major talking point to come out of this game was the decision by Roy Hodgson to place Harry Kane on corners. This was because Harry Kane is definitely more of a force to be reckoned with inside the penalty area, rather than being the man who whips in the crosses from dead ball situations. Furthermore, Harry Kane stands over 6ft tall and is an aerial threat to opposing teams, meanwhile Raheem Sterling, who is a small player, was inside the box instead and he has a far less chance of reaching the ball from a corner than Harry Kane would.
In the second half England continued their pressure from the first half, with a big chance falling to England captain Wayne Rooney as he hit a beautiful right footed shot into the bottom left hand corner, only for it to be superbly turned onto the post by Akinfeev. The deadlock was finally broken in the 73rd minute as Eric Dier smashed an unstoppable 20 yard free-kick past the impressive Akinfeev to give England the lead their performance warranted. However, in typical England fashion in the dying embers of the game, some poor defending allowed Russian defender Berezutski to climb highest in the box to loop a header over Joe Hart to crush the hearts of the thousands of England fans watching at home and in the Stade Velodrome. Overall, there are positives that England can take from the game.

However the match will be forever over shadowed by the disturbing scenes at the end of the match with Russian fans storming into the England section and attacking fans as they tried to desperately escape.
England 2 Wales 1
In one of the early kick offs of the Euro’s, England fought brilliantly against a robust Welsh side in what was one of the best games of the tournament so far. In the opening minutes of the game a mistake by the Welsh defence allowed Dele Alli to race through on Stuurige is a winner goal and play a wonderful ball into the area for Raheem Sterling to pounce on however he put the ball over from close range when it seemed easier to hit the target. Another big chance for England came through Chris Smalling that narrowly went past the left hand side post. The game however took a turn for the worse from the perspective of an England fan as Gareth Bale hit a free kick from around 35 yards which crept into the bottom corner after some woeful goalkeeping from Joe Hart, who could do nothing else other than parry Bale’s effort into his net. England came back after the break with a bang, as Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane were replaced by Daniel Sturridge and Jamie Vardy, after Sterling and Kane’s poor first half performances. Roy Hodgson’s half time subs paid dividends as Vardy capitalised on a mistake from an Ashley Williams header allowed to him to swivel on the half turn and place the ball past Wayne Hennessey. Finally, in the dying embers of the game, Daniel Sturridge topped off the best second half comeback England could’ve wished for as he worked his way into the area and poked the ball past Hennessey. After a poor first half, this result gives England some hope if they can make it through to the knockout stages as it will only take a point against Slovakia to secure their place in the next round.
