Sheringham Carnival

As is traditional hundreds if not thousands turned out to watch the Sheringham Carnival parade on Wednesday night. There were some fantastic entries, excellent music and spectacular dancing and acrobatics. Carnival week is much more than the parade - all sorts of competetitions and races mean that everyone can find something they can either take part in or have some fun watching. Turn to our centre pages for a small fraction of the pictures we have taken or have been sent in. Well done all those on the Carnival Committee that made it yet another great week. And there is still more to come.......

St Andrew`s Flower Festival

Our annual Flower Festival at St. Andrew`s Methodist Church, Sheringham, took place in July on the theme of “I am…..”.

This was depicted in 30 large stunning arrangements covering a range of titles including the “I am” sayings of Jesus, along with other titles from I am… a Fisherman, a Carpenter, the Potter….. to I am going to the Zoo, I a Deep Sea Diver and many more...

We are very grateful to all the flower arrangers who took part with ages varying from members of our Sonseekers, young people`s group who depicted "I am... a Bake Off Contestant" to our oldest lady who is now almost 90 who depicted "I am....a Fairtrade Farmer"

The Festival was opened by Sheringham Mayor, Mr David Gooch, Deputy Mayor, Mr Mark Hill along with Rev David Philo.

visitors to the event, many who had booked their holidays to be here especially for it. Along with the flowers, they enjoyed background music by a rota of organists, and meals and snacks provided in the Cafeteria, as well as browsing round the various stalls and getting their souvenirs of items made from photos of the Festival, along with quizzes, plants and many other items. There was also a prayer space and a children`s area at the event.

The total raised by the festival is £9,958, for the upkeep of the church, and its outreach and witness. A 10% donation is also given each year to charity, which this year is `The Nook Appeal` of EACH East Anglia Children`s Hospices. We express our very

grateful thanks to everyone who came to the Festival and especially to everyone who helped in anyway. We couldn`t have done it without you all. Thank YOU. A DVD of the Festival, £4.50 (+ £1.20 P&P) is available, please contact Rosa on 07889694086 or Email riwest19@msn.com

Photos can also be viewed on our church website at sheringhamethodist.org.uk

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER THYME

in ‘knocking things up’ cheaply and easily. At this time Geoff was actively involved in the campaign to stop the destruction of the limestone pavements – those unique habitats for plants, which were being rapidly depleted to provide the limestone for rock gardens.

It is hard to believe that it is 20 years since the sudden death of Geoff Hamilton, who died from a heart attack on a charity bike ride in the Brecon Beacons in 1996. He was buried, in his boots and jeans, on what would have been his 60th birthday.

Geoff’s impact was enormous - his down to earth and cost conscious approach turned many people onto gardening. Memorable amongst his projects were the £2-a-week garden in 1983, when he set himself a challenge. Could he maintain and improve a small garden roughly 10 x 14m with a lawn, borders, some fruit and vegetables and a small unheated greenhouse on just £2 a week? A second favourite with Gardeners’ World viewers was his creation of artificial rocks. This project, which had some of his nearest and dearest convinced that he had finally flipped, brought together two important strands in his work – his concern for the environment and his delight

I also remember the raised wooden bed he built to hold thyme plants. His thymes table! As a little tribute to Geoff I have planted an old tin bath with a selection of these herbs. The plants were bought from Norfolk Herbs at the Felbrigg Hall Chilli Festival. This is a nursery specialising in the growing of culinary, medicinal and aromatic herb plants based at Dillington near Gressenhall in Dereham.

There are hundreds of species and varieties to choose from and I picked Creeping Lemon, Pink Ripple, Golden Thyme, Creeping Red, Harlington Silver and Silver King. All are hardy if grown in well-drained, neutral to alkaline soil in full sun. After flowering, vigorous growth will be cut back to maintain compactness.

Thymes are easily propagated either from seed sown in early spring or by cuttings. Divide plants in Spring, insert semi-ripe cuttings in mid or late Summer or softwood cuttings in early Summer. Separate rooted stem sections in Spring or Summer, and pot on until established.

In the Western Isles of Scotland wild thyme was put under the pillow or drunk as a tea to prevent nightmares or otherwise give a restful sleep. In areas where lavender would not grow well, women used flowering sprigs of thyme to scent their clothes, handkerchiefs and household linen.

Finally, according to Witchipedia, thyme can be used in magick spells and will attract faeries into the garden, so I will keep my eyes open!

have culinary and medicinal properties. All species of thyme contain the volatile oil, thymol, which is an antiseptic and perhaps it was some inkling of this quality which led to the herb being a key ingredient in judges’ posies and the Sovereign’s Maundy Thursday posy to give the carriers some protection from the infectious diseases of the poor.

North Norfolk Railway First Trains to Cromer

North Norfolk Railway has been working with partners for the last two years to bring a new dining experience to its customers.

On Wednesday 10 August the first train departed at 12noon from North Norfolk Railway station at Sheringham and crossed the road onto the Network Rail line through to Cromer. The train was hauled by diesel to Cromer and then steam back to Sheringham where it continued through to Holt then returned to Sheringham.

The first train was a VIP special, which operated as a dining service with the meal being served along the full journey. The VIP special was only the start, as this was followed later in the afternoon by a further dining train operating the same route for fare paying passengers.

The idea of running dining trains through to Cromer has been under discussion at the railway for a number of years and there have been many hurdles to negotiate. Running on the mainline requires upgrading stock and having locomotives that have been upgraded from the

Heritage line requirements, including the installation of various equipment that has to be available for mainline operations.

In addition, the operator has to be approved to operate mainline services. To enable the trains to operate West Coast Railways have been contracted to run the trains on the mainline on the railway’s behalf.

The steam locomotive used for these trains is a Standard 4 76084 which is owned by the 76084 Locomotive Co Ltd and has been overhauled to the mainline standards in readiness for performing other work on the mainline in the future. It will be assisted by a Class 20 Diesel locomotive, which has been hired in to assist with the Cromer mainline operation.

The North Norfolk Railway will be operating further trains on 7 and 8 September. The product has proved popular with sales for the three public trains already at a high level.

Hugh Harkett Managing Director of the North Norfolk Railway said ‘This day has been a long

time coming so we are extremely pleased to see it come to fruition. The ability to run occasional trains to Cromer does give the railway a new premium product, which we hope to continue in future years.

North Norfolk Railway is based at Sheringham Station and last year carried over 166,000 passengers.

Cromer gears up for World Pier Crabbing Championships and auction of 102 dinky beach huts flowers to a fully operational Moulin Rouge, the spectacular huts have collectively taken more than 2,000 hours to decorate.

This August Bank Holiday Cromer will welcome the return of the World Pier Crabbing Championships where crowds of people will line the length of the pier to vie for the coveted title.

On the same day, 102 dinky beach huts will be displayed on the pier forecourt before they are auctioned off to the highest bidder for charity.

The two annual events, which will be held on Sunday, 28 August are organised by the Cromer and Sheringham Crab & Lobster Festival and will be joined by an array of local craft stalls along the promenade. Throughout the summer, the dinky beach huts have been adorning shop windows, hotels, pubs and guesthouses across north Norfolk.

Decorated by over 400 local people, have been on display as part of the Festival’s annual art trail. From a boathouse complete with slipway and lifeboat to a bookshop complete with replica newspapers and a potting shed filled with

Lining the pier forecourt, the spectacular huts will be auctioned off by master auctioneer Martyn Fox, who has presided over the last six festival auctions which have raised more than £33,000 for local good causes.

The auction, which has become a staple event for the festival, will be the first and only time people will have a chance to see all the huts displayed together.

The 102 lots on sale, sponsored by local businesses and tricolated by local people, include huts decorated by artists Dianne Lindsay, Samuel Thomas and Lizzie Riches as well as schools and community groups.

The trail has received wondrous attention from locals and visitors alike who have taken on the challenge of spotting all the huts since it began. Schools, youth groups, business, organisations and many talented local people have produced a stunning array of quirky

Holt Probus Club

Stepping Out in a Good Cause

In 2012 Father Howard Stoker, Rector at St Andrews Church, Holt, and Steve Dyer, a member and server at the church, set out on a 90 mile walk over several days to raise money towards the building of the extension to St Andrews Church.

Steve Dyer

The route combined parts of the Peddars Way and the North Norfolk Coastal footpaths, starting at Knettishall Heath near Thetford and ending at Cromer. Steve Dyer spoke to members of Holt and District Probus Club about this adventure at their August meeting, illustrating his talk with photographs taken along the way.

In a few weeks’ time Steve will set out to climb 12 Welsh mountains over 3000 feet high in 4 or 5 days. He has been a keen walker (and qualified mountain guide) for most of his life so the challenge of the North Norfolk walk was less for him than it was for the Rector.

Steve had organised the walk like a military campaign, having worked out the length of each stretch and arranged for support people to meet them at each resting place. So it did go like clockwork, in spite of sore feet and shins.

Over £5,000 was raised and applied to the St Andrews Church extension, which is of course a completed building now.

Holt and District Probus Club meets at The Feathers, Holt, on the first Thursday in every month and enquiries about membership (or a trial visit - visitors are most welcome) should be made to Treasurer Ray Morgan on 01263 7114789 Sheringham Independent 446

Fairtrade for Sheringham

What a beautiful day to welcome this year’s Sheringham Carnival!

Everything was splendid - the sunshine, the crowds, the Carnival helpers, the crowning of the Carnival Queen and all the activities.

We were very busy on our stall, but I did see the wonderful Newfoundland dogs, and the fantastic aerobatic aircraft display.

We enjoyed talking to people on the Fairtrade Stall, selling goods, and offering Fairtrade samples, thanks to the generosity of our local Sainsbury and Tesco Stores.

Many thanks to all the people involved. Brenda Smith Fairtrade for Sheringham Steering Group

Norfolk Foodbank Given Electric Support

A North Norfolk food bank will provide a lifeline for even more families in crisis after cutting its running costs with the introduction of an all-electric Nissan e-NV200 van.

Cromer and District Food Bank, which covers an area of 200 square miles, supplied three-day emergency food packages to 2,409 people in need, including 920 children, last year.

And now it will be able to help even more vulnerable local people after taking delivery of its new 100% electric Nissan van, which has been funded by a grant from the Sheringham Shoal Community Fund and supplied and sponsored by local Nissan dealership, Crayford and Abbs.

The Nissan e-NV200 costs just two pence

per mile to run and has significantly lower maintenance costs. The charity will use the savings it makes to feed more families.

Ella King, Project Manager at Cromer and District Foodbank, said “We cover around 200 miles a day making deliveries and before we were spending a small fortune on diesel. Now though, the e-NV200 has cut our running costs significantly and that’s money we can plough straight back into providing food for the people we exist to support.

She added There’s a huge and growing need for food banks in and around this area so the addition of this van and the support of the Sheringham Shoal Community Fund and Crayford and Abbs is real boost.”

Sheringham Stroke Support Group Have you had a stroke? Do you know anyone who’s had one?

The Group aims to provide practical and emotional support to all those people in North Norfolk whose lives have been affected by stroke, including their carers.

It offers a friendly, sociable environment in which they can meet and interact with people whose needs are similar.

Our meetings are held fortnightly on Wednesday afternoons from 2.15pm until 3.45pm. Our autumn session runs from 7 September to 30 November.

We have a variety of guest speakers and entertainments and exercise sessions are held once a month.

Our new venue from 7 September will be the Communal Day Room at Anchor Close, Sheringham.

We make a nominal charge of £10 to cover the whole of a spring or autumn session (carers free) but there are no other expenses, We pay for a door to door taxi service for anyone who needs it.

For further information please contact Bernice Escott on 07553 642413 or Harvey Pitcher on 01263 512328. They will be delighted to hear from you.

Kevin Abbs, Director at Crayford & Abbs Nissan in Gypsies Lane, Bodham near Holt, said: “Foodbanks are so important to families

across the country so we were delighted to be of help to Cromer and District Foodbank, whose work is having a great impact in the area.

“More and more businesses are making the switch to electric motoring and immediately seeing the benefits. We hope they will enjoy the vehicle as they continue to help more families and young people in need.”

Volunteers Needed

After a record year in 2015, the North Norfolk Railway continues to power ahead in 2016.

With a busy schedule of regular service trains and special events on the ever popular “Poppy Line”, the current year is shaping up to be another success.

Behind these achievements lies a dedicated and hard working team of volunteers who support a small number of permanent staff. Many of the Railways visitors are surprised when they learn that the vast majority of roles on the NNR are undertaken by volunteers. Like most heritage railways, the NNR relies heavily on its volunteers and with the continuing expansion of the railway, the need for volunteers to support it continues to grow.

There are a huge variety of roles available for volunteers from the more traditional ones such as engine driver, guard, signaller and station staff to less obvious but equally important ones such as stewarding the increasingly popular Railway Cottage at Holt - a cottage faithfully converted from an old railway carriage, dressed and furnished just as it would have been in the 1930s. The gardens at the stations are lovingly tendered by volunteers who manage to combine two interests in one. The NNR is constantly looking for new volunteers and whatever your aspirations or skills, we believe we can find a volunteer role in our team that you will find both rewarding and enjoyable.

If you are interested in volunteering on the “Poppy Line”, please contact the NNR at enquiries@nnrailway.co.uk using the heading “Volunteering” in the subject field or telephone on 01263 820800. Sheringham Independent 446

Sheringham South Perambulations! Hedges are much tidier. I've had three complaints about thoughtless people lighting bonfires which does nothing for neighbours washing and could harm passing car drivers visibility. Autumn is coming, please think. Sticking with gardens, we're in the favourite time for theft of garden machinery so mark it and keep it locked up. Full marks to the lady on Campion Way who was busy clearing her pavement and gutter of debris. Good to know that people care.

There are a certain amount of weeds growing through the pavement tarmac, Norfolk Highways won't get around to it so it would be great if individual house-holders could give it a "Weedol" blast!

Lighthouse Community Church in Sheringham is backing a project to support and develop a school at Lumperie in Uganda, and a new website has just been launched to promote the scheme.

The project was established following a series of visits made by mission teams from Lighthouse to the primary school in Lumperie. During these visits, the team built guttering, a rainwater storage tank, a water filtration system, re-wired the electrical system and completed and decorated classrooms. They also provided bunk beds, book shelves, books, teacher training, a school office, computer, 180 food parcels, shoes and clothing as well as running a holiday club, sports day, feeding programme and health checks.

Following the last mission visit in November 2015, two members of the team, Ian Mutton and Derek Baldry, felt that they should make a greater commitment to the work in Lumperie,

Most of the Campion Way front gardens are looking really good and a credit to the owners.

On to planning matters, the new website is about to be up and running and has been simplified somewhat. Simple advice on applications, how, when, what needs one etc. In fact, a huge variety of subjects tackled by NNDC so it's worth a visit. Still no movement on trimming up Butts Lane, yet another reminder to NCC Highways imminent!

Finally, Septembers Surgery with Doug Smith, Judy Oliver and I will take place at 11am on Friday 16 September at the Community Centre. Let's now hope that the Sun continues to shine on our splendid Sheringham! Dick Shepherd

and this was confirmed when they shared their thoughts with Pastor Stephen Musisi the Director of African Child Development Trust, who had a similar vision.

Ian and Derek met with Lighthouse Senior Pastor Ian Savory and shared their vision for the work in Lumperie, and Lighthouse leadership confirmed that this project should become a significant part of the Lighthouse missions programme. Ian and Derek have been set apart to lead the Project, which has been called ‘Reed People’. The name comes from Isaiah 42 v 3 : A bruised reed he will not break, and smouldering flax He will not quench. The pair returned to Lumperie in May this year to gather information and survey the site in order to produce a comprehensive plan to complete the development of the Primary School, and plan for a Secondary School and potentially a Vocational Training College. Alongside these

projects, it is hoped to develop an agricultural training centre to teach better land management, arable farming methods and animal husbandry in order to increase crop yield and high animal welfare.

Derek says “we are simply working with Lighthouse Charity Trust, and with Pastor Steve Musisi in Uganda to help develop the school to fulfil the vision from God.”

Ian and Derek have further trips planned, but in the meantime they would welcome invitations to share their vision with community, business and public organisations. A new website has been launched to promote ‘Reed People’ and invite donations - visit www.reedpeople.org

Invitation to Merchant Navy Day at North Norfolk District Council headquarters

Red Ensign will be raised Anyone with connections to the Merchant Navy, including veterans and those currently serving, are being invited to NNDC's Cromer headquarters on 3 September for a flag hoisting ceremony of the Red Ensign.

The event will recognise the work of members of the Merchant Navy, including their role in the two world wars and our continuing reliance on modern day merchant seafarers who bring in 95% of our imports including half of the food we eat.

Local dignitaries and youth groups with sea connections will be invited, but there is also a general invitation to all who have connections to the Merchant Navy.

People attending are asked to arrive at the Holt Road offices at 10.45am for an 11am start. A small reception will follow the hoisting of the Red Ensign, which is the UK Merchant Navy's official flag.

The event will be hosted by North Norfolk District Council Chairman John Lee, who has many links with the sea as a working crab fisherman who comes from a family line of sea fishermen and a long heritage with the RNLI.

"Both Cromer and North Norfolk as a whole have a very long and close relationship with the sea and with people who work on or in the sea, whose efforts can sometimes go unrecognised," said Cllr Lee.

"The opportunity to show our respect for a hard working group of people who operate in a difficult environment for all of our benefit is very welcome." Sheringham Independent 446

Talent Competition

Another Glass Ceiling Shattered!

North Norfolk Photographic Society’s Annual Exhibition was held in July, ,this year in St Andrews’ Church Hall. This proved to be an excellent location - visitor numbers were well up on previous years and the spacious hall suited the show very well. On the evening of the first day of the

exhibition, 27 July, members held a social evening when, as well as admiring each other’s pictures, certificates were awarded to those that had done well in competitions over the last year.

A special part of the evening

18

was the announcement of members who had come first, second and third taking all the competitions into account - the Photographers of the Year.

Photographer of the Year winners (from left to right) Lizzie Wallis (3rd) Diana Knight (2nd) and Liz Akers (winner - with trophy)

Chairman Malcolm Edwards first awarded certificates to Michaela Bone and Karen Spence, who came second and third in the Novice category and then awarded a trophy to the winner of this group, Rob Palethorpe.

But anyone who thought that photography was a hobby for men in anoraks got a shock when ladies took first, second and third places in the advanced section - another glass ceiling shattered! The trophy

for first place went to Liz Akers, with Diana Knight and Lizzie Wallis taking second and third spots.

Chairman Malcolm English with some of the exhibits at the exhibition

Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are normally held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays each month but after a summer break will resume on 21 September when Barry Freeman will talk about English Monochrome Landscapes. A New Education Officer for Sheringham RNLI - The Force of Gail At the monthly Crew meeting Sheringham Lifeboat, we were introduced to Gail Barker who is to be the New Education Officer for the Sation. Gail is a teaching assistant at Sheringham Primary School and her husband Ady is the second Coxswain on the Cromer Lifeboat, so she is certainly well qualified to take on this task. Despite the close association Gail’s husband has to Cromer, it was thought that, the fact they live in Aylmerton, would not be an issue that would cloud Gail’s judgement, especially as she hails from the south, well Hoveton anyway! Of course the lads at Sheringham have been “educating the general public and most notably the local schools on the workings of the in general and the Sheringham Lifeboat in particular both in taking the message out to the schools and organising and accompanying visits to the station.

Gail’s role will be more to do with the administrative side of things which will ease the pressure of organising so that more time can be spent getting the important message across, that message being “The Saving of Lives on Water. So we welcome Gail into the happy throng and wish her all the best in her new voluntary role of which there are over 3000 volunteer shore crew and 4700 lifeboat crew throughout the UK and Ireland. In fact 95% of all RNLI people are volunteers.

It was also reported at the meeting that the Sheringham RNLI Lifeboat Crew have again retained the Sheringham Carnival Tug of War Trophy, this time without even breaking sweat!

Another successful year for Holt Festival This year’s Holt Festival continued to build on past successes with many of its events selling out. The week-long festival began with the announcement of the winner of the annual Holt Festival Art Prize.

This year’s winner was Lara Cobden from Gressenhall. Her painting In The Enchanted Garden was chosen from 190 entries that had been whittled down to a shortlist of 30. Organiser James Glennie said ‘Lara’s winning work was amongst many strong entries but there can only be one winner. It is technically amazing and the reflections of the moonlit sky give a mysterious edge to an otherwise calm warmth’.

As well as a cheque for ÂŁ1500 Lara has the chance to have her work displayed at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts.

Elsewhere in the festival there were sell out appearances from Gyles Brandreth, Jacqui Dankworth, leading journalist Kate Adie, amazing Polish pianist Mariola Cieniawa making her very first UK concert appearance outside London and many others. Forensic mind reader Colin Cloud amazed a packed Auden Theatre and caused every jaw in the house to drop in amazement and disbelief that a man can deduce such things. Another big hit was the return of international film star Julie Christie, reading poetry with Anthony and Ben Holden.

Other big names at the festival, now in its 9th year, include novelist Joanna Trollope, comedians Jenny Éclair and Mark Watson and Dire Straits founder John Illsey. Around 35% of the festival programme is

free and there was a much expanded selection of events for children this year, ranging from story telling to dance workshops to the swashbuckling all action family play Captain Morgan and the Sands of Time and Norwich Puppet Theatre’s Oddly. The week came to a sweet conclusion when pop legends The Searchers wowed the audience in the open air Theatre In The Woods with a set packed with sixties hits. from The Searchers. Lead singer Frank Allen said the band were thrilled and honoured to play such a unique venue. Holt Festival, Artistic Director Charles Pugh said ‘This has been such a successful festival, so many people enthused about the events. I would like to say a big thank you to the festival team, especially our marvelous volunteers. It feels like a Holt Festival to be proud of. Now of course we must look forward to 2017!’ Planning for the 2017 Festival which runs from Saturday 22 to Sunday 30 July has already begun!

Recently Asked Questions and Answers from the Clapham & Collinge Family team By Neale Grearson, Partner and Head of the Family Department provision for your children. Also if investing money in property with another person (e.g. a new partner or new spouse) it is important to look at things like Declarations of Trust dealing with joint ownership as new relationships do not always work and that could mean that a new partner might be entitled to a share in property that you would want your children to have had. If you live with a new partner having a Cohabitation Agreement would be advisable but most importantly if you intend to remarry a Pre-Nuptial Agreement could be essential. This could set out that you wish to "ring fence" any assets that you receive from your divorce that you wish to ensure your children benefit from and not your new spouse or his/her children or family.

Q. How can I ensure I get my fair share in a divorce?

A. Make sure you see a specialist family Solicitor who is part of Resolution. Obtaining a divorce settlement in the right terms is vital and it is important that you have the right person or people working with you. There is only one "bite of the cherry" so getting this right is very important.

Q. How do I ensure my children get what I want them to get following my divorce? How do I protect what they're entitled to?

A. When a divorce takes place the needs of children are a vital priority. The Family Court will take into account those needs but after a financial settlement is concluded it is left to individual parents to make sure they provide for the children and ensure they get what they want them to have following the divorce. Complications in particular arise when parents form new relationships and have children from that new relationship or marriage. The starting point is making a Will to have

Q. Will I have to go to court to finalise my divorce?

A. The procedure for an actual divorce is straightforward so long as the husband and wife agree and co-operate. It is now usually unnecessary to attend Court at all. However if there is a disagreement over finances or your children a Hearing might be necessary to deal with those aspects.

Q. If I'm talking about my provisions in a divorce in a court, can it be publicly reported in a newspaper?

A. It is very unusual for this to happen. Proceedings "in chambers" are private unless the Court allows reporting.

Q. Why should I use a solicitor instead of an online divorce service?

A. Most Solicitors will be able to give you a tailored service that is personalised to you and you have the reassurance of being able to ask questions. Many Solicitors will offer a fixed fee for an actual divorce which may be higher than the cost of an online divorce service but you need to decide what type of service you want and what is included (or not included) in the online divorce service.

To find out more or discuss your individual requirements in further detail, our dedicated Family Law solicitors will be delighted to help. About With Friends Allotment Opening

East Runton Parish Councillors, a District Councillor and church officials were amongst those who joined members, staff and volunteers from About with Friends when they opened their new allotment on Monday 1 August.

The organisation, who have gardening teams on their Workskills programme for adults with learning disabilities, took over a rundown allotment plot in East Runton earlier this year. Squeezing in visits between their regular, commercial customers, the teams have transformed the wasteland into a

22

beautiful space brimming with vegetables and fruits. The product, which will be used by the group’s Catering team and Community Cafe was ceremonially pulled by some of the community dignitaries present at the opening with the gardeners moving in to harvest the rest once they left.

CEO Helen Dalton-Hare and Development Manager Steve Smith spoke at the opening and emphasised the need for more volunteers and gardening equipment to help the group develop. Helen also noted that they were looking for local ‘Weekend Quail-Sitters’ to check for some quails they would like to keep

on the plot.

About With Friends is a fun, active and energetic charity based in Cromer. We offer children, young people and adults with learning disabilities the chance to lead the lives they choose. When they become part of our family they have opportunities to develop lasting friendships; engage in fun and active social activities; get involved in the community; have the chance to try new experiences; learn new skills both for life and work; but above all feel a valued part of society while enjoying life to the full.

A cooking demonstration by Richard Bainbridge of Benedict's restaurant and Thornage Hall's very own Kelby Light will showcase main ingredients tended and grown by tenants and work-based learners at Thornage Hall. All ingredients will be sourced from within a 20 mile radius of Thornage. The demonstration will take place between 2pm and 3pm and one lucky bidder will get the once in a lifetime chance to eat this fine three course meal prepared by the two chefs.

Richard Bainbridge has been delighted to champion Thornage produce at his British Bistro in Norwich which opened in June last year; ‘The vegetables enjoy the finest provenance you could expect locally, combining a sound understanding of biodynamic principles with learning opportunities for the wider community’.

Alison Hall, Director of Thornage Hall, is keen to share the work of the organisation with the wider community; ‘I am delighted to be opening the doors here at Thornage and allowing the wider community an opportunity to come and have a closer look at what we do. Fundamental to our Steiner based ethos is the principle that every individual has unique skills, our role is to celebrate these whilst at the same time providing opportunities to enhance and develop new ones’. Prestigious Green Flag award for three North Norfolk for adults and chilThe three sites are among a record-breaking 1686 District Council green spaces place dren to experience the parks and green spaces that have been awarded Holt Country Park, Sadler’s Wood and Pretty Corner Woods recognised again as among best open spaces in the UK Holt Country Park, Sadler’s Wood, near North Walsham, and Pretty Corner Woods, near Sheringham, have again been named amongst the best open spaces in the UK, winning the right to fly the prestigious Green Flag for 2016/17.

It is the 12th year in a row that Holt Country Park, which, like the other two winners, is run by North Norfolk District Council, has earned a Green Flag for being welcoming, safe, clean and well-managed.

Becky Palmer, NNDC Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services, said “This is an incredible result. For Holt Country Park, Sadler’s Wood and Pretty Corner Woods to keep winning is testament to the hard work of our countryside rangers and the wealth of beautiful places that surround us in North Norfolk. "Our award-winning green spaces are a wonderful

natural world. There are also events at all our Green Flag sites, so do take the opportunity to visit and take in these beautiful places.”

In 2005, Holt Country Park was the first in Norfolk to win a Green Flag - an award that demands yearon-year improvement for the status to be retained. Holt Country Park was joined by Sadler’s Wood, just outside North Walsham, when it achieved a Green Flag in 2012, and then by Pretty Corner Woods the following year. Pretty Corner was awarded a Green Flag on its very first application, which is very rare and a clear acknowledgement of the excellent work that is being carried out by NNDC staff and dedicated local volunteers.

North Norfolk businesses best in county at paying their rates

According to a table of council collection rates across Norfolk, North Norfolk District Council collects more than 99% of business rates. Officers at NNDC have been working hard to ensure collection levels for both business rates and council tax across the district are high and making it as easy as possible for residents to keep up to date with council tax payments.

The table published for the county shows NNDC has the highest collection levels of any Council in Norfolk for non-domestic rates or business rates and had collected an impressive 99.3% for 2015/16. The table also put North Norfolk District Council second in the county for collection of council tax at 98.6%.

Cllr Wyndham Northam Cabinet Member for financial services said “We do understand there are sometimes occasions when circumstances can change and paying council tax or business rates can drop down people’s priority list. Paying rates and council tax is the right thing to do and is a legal requirement, so the fact NNDC, our businesses and our residents are up at the top of the league table is a super achievement.”

NNDC offers residents and businesses access to ebilling, online services, text alert reminders, Direct Debit over a variety of payment dates, barcoded bills and a 24-7 automated payment line to suit different needs.

To let the council know about a change in circumstances or to discuss a more convenient way of paying your council tax, contact 01263 516071 or ctax@north-norfolk.gov.uk

BEESTON REGIS CELEBRATIONS

Saturday, 6 August was a big day in the history of Beeston Regis as the foundation of Beeston Priory 800 years ago in 1216 was celebrated. There was a weekend of medieval-themed events on the meadow and a service in the priory ruins conducted by the Rt Revd Graham James, Bishop of Norwich and the Revd David Head, Rector of All Saints’ Church. Surround your day with elegance and

romance on your special day. Arrive in a beautiful authentic vintage car painted in ivory and black.

The service was preceded by the chimes of bells summoning us to the priory ruins and included monastic plainsong and the age-old sound of flint-knapping. As the congregation prepared to pray they were invited to ‘keep silence for a while, listening to the timeless sounds - the wind, the trees, birdsong, the stories told by the ancient walls on every side ...’

Attention then moved to All Saints’ Church and the arrival of the Diocese of Norwich Classic Car Rally on Church Field. The Bishop and the Rector led a special service in the church attended by the rally participants.

John Capgrave, a famous theologian writing in 1424, described the order of canons at Beeston Regis as ‘an order which is not in the world, as they say, but in Norfolk’. Just to show that All Saints’ is very much of the world the church was full of flowers arranged to celebrate the Olympic Games in Rio.

The Bishop said that his prayers for the day included one for good weather and another for a win for Norwich City - and we had them both! Judy Wilkinson

BeachLife activity week to return to Sheringham clifftop Final preparations are underway for this year's BeachLife activity week on Sheringham's cliff top and beach later this month. Bumper crowds are expected, and there is no charge to join in the fun.

BeachLife is a joint venture by the churches in Sheringham, aimed at engaging with local youngsters, as well as holidaymakers, and this will be its fifth summer. It will run from Tuesday August 30 to Friday September 02. The event is open to all ages up to 17. Daily activities will start with the ‘Beach Special’ at 10.30am every day except Friday, where all ages come together at the cliff-top marquee on The Leas for music, games, drama and fun, and to introduce the day’s theme, which this year is the Rio Olympics. The children and young people then split into age-groups for their ‘Going Deeper’ sessions to explore that day’s theme in more depth before breaking for lunch. On the Friday, the morning starts at 10.30am with the Going Deeper sessions. The afternoons comprise of beach games and sports, giant inflatables including the Demolition Ball, a family buffet with Samba band, and the tide fight. Evening activities for young people will include a quiz night with chips, carnival crafts, a ‘Sheropoly’ challenge around the town, and swimming at Splash.

“This has become one of the major events in the town's calendar” said Peter Skivington, one of the organisers. “Not only does this provide an opportunity for the churches to engage with local youngsters, but we provide a great week for visitors as well. We already have people asking when next year's BeachLife is so that they can plan their holidays to Sheringham”.

Those wishing to attend can download a form from www.sheringhambeachlife.co.uk and bring it with them to save time on the day. Alternatively, although anyone can just come along and register on the morning, from 10.15am. The website also gives more information about the event, and contact details.

Nic graduated from Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute in South Africa earlier that year and brought to the Sanctuary unparalleled compassion and insight (as well as a curious penchant for fountain pens!). It is this understanding and skill that has seen Nic provide clinical care, herd health management, and round up and rescue expertise to both Redwings and fellow welfare organisations for the past 25 years.

Indeed, as testament to Nic’s extensive experience working in the field of equine welfare, in 2009 he was elected to be Chairman of the National Equine Welfare Council (NEWC) – an umbrella organisation for equine rescue centres and sanctuaries across the UK and a role he fulfils alongside heading up Redwings’ welfare and behaviour teams. As Head of Welfare and Behaviour, Nic’s knowledge is fundamental to Redwings’ rescue work, in particular specialising in the rounding-up and subsequent rehabilitation and long-term care of feral, unhandled or mistreated horses, and it is his expertise in this field that has spearheaded Redwings’ approach to not only equine health and

welfare but equine behaviour and training too. Colleague and fellow veterinary surgeon Roxane Kirton explains: “Nic has dedicated his career to the promotion and advancement of horse welfare. He has led the development of our behaviour programme at Redwings because he has the vision and conviction to drive forward change and make things happen, while always being open-minded and reflective of ways in which we can improve the lives of our horses.

an expert witness in prosecution cases.

Nic has also been involved in consultations on many areas of animal welfare policy; most notably he worked with the Welsh Government between 2012 and 2014 to help draft the Control of Horses (Wales) Act, which became law in 2014 and helped energise the commitment to an English equivalent that came into force the following year.

Commenting on Nic’s 25 years at Redwings, Chief Executive Lynn Cutress said “Nic has been instrumental in our landmark achievements as a charity and this is testament to his 25-year commitment to Redwings and helping horses in need.

“I – and his whole team – are so proud to work alongside Nic and to be part of such a dynamic and forward-thinking department, plus his brilliant sense of humour and vivid shirt collection ensures there is never a dull day!”

However, it is his unwavering commitment and passion that those who work and have worked with Nic comment on most frequently. Nic has headed up several high profile rescue operations – including the notorious Spindle Farm in Amersham in 2008 where over 100 horses, ponies and donkeys were rescued over a gruelling 24-hour period – and he regularly lends his experience as

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We have recently had several calls from people whose cat has gone missing and we always try to offer advice depending on the individual situation. Although not all cats get reunited with their owners, a high proportion are. We will always suggest that the owner contacts local vets to ensure they are aware of the situation and also to ask neighbours to check in their garages and sheds. Cats are very curious, will sneak in to have a look round, and may decide ‘this looks a nice place to have a little nap’. As the neighbours may not have reason to go into these buildings every day, it is a good starting point. We have on many occasions been advised that the cat has turned up after a few days, very hungry and thirsty and it is obvious that it has been shut in somewhere. However, it is worth noting that a nervous or timid cat will not immediately come out of its hiding place, so all nooks and crannies need to be checked.

Indeed, even those who are not fortunate enough to work alongside Nic shoulder-to-shoulder in rescuing horses in need, cannot help but be inspired during his retelling of what he has experienced as a frequent event speaker. His compassion is tangible, and at a recent event both he and the whole audience were moved to tears while reflecting on Redwings’ largest ever rescue operation in 2013 where over 400 horses were found in South Wales in some of the most horrific scenes ever witnessed by the charity.

“Both within our own charity and in his partnership working with our fellow animal welfare organisations and key partners like local authorities and emergency services, Nic’s drive and determination are inspirational and demonstrate that when working together we can achieve the unachievable – from the Amersham rescue to the phenomenal work in Wales. When the chips are down for horses in dire need, I always know Nic and his team will deliver.”

There are also instances where a timid cat, even having been in its new home for some time, will decide not to come in for various reasons. Stephanie recently had a call about such a cat. The owner had seen it in the vicinity but could not entice it indoors. He borrowed one of our traps, placed some nice smelly food inside and within 24 hours the cat was back in its home, being made a great fuss of and cuddling up on her owners lap.

We also hear of instances where a cat has been frightened by a dog and run off. Because they are scared, Ditty Dotty, one of they may lose their sense of direction and not know the younger cats the way home. In these instances we would suggest the owner advises their neighbour of the situation and ask them to let them know if they see the cat in question. Once the cat has been spotted, the owner can try to entice it back home. If this does not work, we will gladly lend a trap to help reunite it with its owner. Although you may catch another cat (or even a hedgehog) before getting the ‘right cat’, this is often successful. Although not all cats are reunited with their owners (and sometimes it can be years before this happens, as we know from past experience) a good few are. Some may have been unfortunate and been in an accident and some, having got lost, may have turned up some distance away as “a stray”. If you do see an unfamiliar cat in your garden please bear in mind it may be someone else’s cat and they will be desperate to be reunited with it. Your first course action should be to contact local vets to see if any are missing which fit the cat’s description and to get the cat checked to see if it is micro chipped. That way, more cats could be reunited with their owner. If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered

The Garage offers professional face painting course in Sheringham

The Garage is offering local people the opportunity to learn the art of face painting on a course held over 3 evenings at Sheringham Community Centre in September. The course, which takes place on Wednesdays 14, 21, 28 September from 6.30pm - 9pm, will be a great chance for adults and young people aged 14 or over to develop skills and techniques under the guidance of a professional creative body artist.

Over two days participants will benefit from step-by-step demonstrations of a range of designs,

work on brush and sponge techniques, practice applying different designs and learn how to work safely. The Garage will help participants find volunteering opportunities at local events to put their new skills to the test. Experienced face painters find lots of opportunities for work at parties, festivals, seaside resorts, and is a great skill to have.

Theatre panning for gold in search for Lost Boys actors

The search is on for some Lost Boys to join a Norfolk pantomime cast.

Sheringham Little Theatre is staging Peter Pan later in the year, but has launched a summer appeal to find his pals.

At least a dozen Lost Boys are needed, as well as four youngsters to take the speaking parts of John and Michael, Wendy's brothers who join the magical journey.

Dear Margaret,

With all the talk of buildings in Sheringham being an eyesore, the latest being the proposed demolition of The Shannocks Hotel, I would like to add another to the list.

Surely one of the biggest blights of this beautiful town is the property previously known locally as ‘The Top Club’.

What a sight to behold for all visitors using the Holway Road, Cromer Road or Weybourne Road to enter the town. I just wonder how much longer these building works will take, particularly as they seem to be done by one man and his dog (a small dog).

On behalf of everyone who attended the Vintage Tea Party on Friday 5 August, could I say a very big thank you to the ladies of the Sheringham WI.

Iron Man Adventure by Joel Lodge

My Dad, Andrew Lodge, is an employee of Shell and over the past couple of years he has been doing triathlons around North Norfolk and he has also recently taken part in the Staffordshire half Iron Man in order to prepare himself for his biggest challenge yet, the Iron Man event in Maastricht. He started off doing triathlons to start being more active and too get into better shape, which he has been successful in doing after losing four stone over the past few years. Doing these triathlons has given him a new hobby to partake in and something that he can challenge himself to do.

On the 1st of August 2016, my Dad completed his first Iron Man in the Dutch town of Maastricht. After months and months of preparation, with early morning cycles, running and lake swimming to prepare him for the event which tests every competitor to the absolute limit.

The Iron Man course in Maastricht consists of a 3.8km swim, 180km bike ride and a 42.2km run (a marathon). The event started at around seven in the morning and there was a cut off time in the evening, which was around midnight, meaning that anyone who finished after the designated cut off time unfortunately wouldn’t be counted as an Iron Man which would be absolutely devastating for someone who would’ve spent over 16 hours competing in the event, as well as countless hours of training for the event for it to all come too nothing.

Luckily after all my Dad’s hard work and dedication he managed to complete the Iron Man within the time bracket which is a fantastic achievement and one of which I am very proud of him for doing and completing, considering the fact he only started doing triathlons a couple of years ago.

You will all be aware from National newspaper and television coverage of the NHS, including general practice, coming under increase pressure. This is particularly true in Sheringham where we have a very elderly population with increasing health needs. In recent months the practice has been inundated with calls to speak to a doctor resulting in high pressure on the system and longer waits for appointments. The practice and PPG have worked closely together to work out how best to deal with these issues. We have decided that in order to ensure that all patients get the best attention possible and are dealt with as quickly and appropriately as possible, calls need to be handled slightly differently. We have a team based approach that makes sure you get the help you need while making best use of our resources. This is in line with National Guidance. The enclosed leaflet “Patient Services at Sheringham Medical Practice” describes our approach and the service we provide. Please read it and keep it for future reference.

In revising this system we have tried to take account of any difficulties which you have brought to our attention. However, it is important to understand that it is not always possible to provide everything that everyone would ideally want. Nevertheless, we have also tried to ensure that the way the system works gives you, the patient, the best possible service we can give. Keith Cameron, Chairman of the Sheringham Medical Practice, Patient Participation Group.

Norwich City Transfer Roundup and first game thoughts by Joel Lodge, our Football Correspondent

So far in the transfer window, Norwich have been quieter than perhaps expected, however since the last transfer roundup Norwich have made two further signings in the form of attacking midfielder Alex Pritchard and goalkeeper Paul Jones to provide competition for McGovern and John Ruddy. As far as departures are concerned, Ricky Van Wolfswinkel has left Norwich for an undisclosed fee to go back to Holland to play for Vitesse Arnhem, meanwhile, Declan Rudd has gone on a season long loan to League One side Charlton which seems like a step back in terms of his development.

Norwich also missed out on the signing of Ross McCormack as he ended up at Aston

Villa after Norwich were unable to salvage a deal with Fulham.

Norwich kicked off their Championship campaign against Blackburn away from home as they showed their dominance in a 4-1 win, blowing Blackburn away with attacking quality whilst remaining resilient at the back however they were unable to keep a clean sheet. Norwich started off brightly as Jacob Murphy scored one of the goals of the day with a 25 yard rocket in the top right corner to give City an early lead, shortly after Murphy’s screamer, Hoolahan doubled the Canaries lead with a wonderful solo goal proving that he still has it even at the age of 34. In the 25th minute Cameron Jerome slotted home from Ivo Pinto’s cross as his shot deflected in off

Blackburn got a consolation goal from an Anthony Stokes after some poor marking from the Norwich defence.

Overall it was a good result for the Canaries as they start the season off at the top of the table and long may it continue!

Afterwards Annamarie said ' I am so very proud of all my fitness ladies - not only do they enjoy the physical side that the classes offer, but also the social aspect. Fitness League has a history of over 85 years and I like to think that we have many more years of being a success in Norfolk’.

Over 70 of Annamarie’s ladies, aged from 40 to 92 years, came together to take part in a fun fitness class led by Annamarie, sharing with spectators the wonderful work they have achieved this term.

They carried on where they left off in the second half as Steven Naismith scored with a low-drilled finish into the bottom right corner after a sublime nutmeg from Wes Hoolahan who was a menace to the Blackburn defence all game.

The afternoon was a complete success with lots of laughter and fun and raised the amazing amount for EAAA of £744.50.

The classes are low impact to wonderful music, making sure everyone mobilises and strengthens all their muscles and joints to enable them to be the best they can be, as well as focusing on correct posture.
