Youngsters Step into Panto Spotlight

Bright young stage talent sang, danced and acted their hearts out to earn a place in a seaside pantomime.

Fifty hopefuls stepped into the audition spotlight with dreams of landing a role in Peter Pan at Sheringham Little Theatre.

The search was on for Lost Boys, pirates, plus the key parts of John, Michael and warrior princess Tiger Lily.

With numbers pinned to their clothes they were put through their paces learning lines, dance routines and songs under the eagle eyes of director Nick Earnshaw and his vocal and dance experts.

“We are looking for youngsters with stage presence who can connect with the audience, who can sing and dance on beat,” said Mr Earnshaw.

Young cast hopefuls at the “It was a good turnout and they were all very good – and we could have Sheringham pantomime auditions taken on more, but because we are the Little Theatre we New Puzzle Page & Competition inside this issue cannot!” Continued on page 4...

Youngsters Step into Panto Spotlight

Continued from front cover... Selection was also down seeking a mixture of sizes to fill parts ranging from small Lost Boys to bigger pirates.

But the casting session also threw up the need for Mr Earnshaw to rewrite the script – when the girl who landed the Tiger Lily role – Rachel Feetham - was younger and smaller than the original plan.

“She was so good and brought something different to the role – so I will rewrite the panto to fit.” In October the youngsters – who, apart from Tiger Lily, are split into two teams - begin weekly rehearsals, before joining the main adult professional cast in late November for the final countdown to curtain up in December. Mr Earnshaw is doing his fourth Sheringham panto, having directed it twice before and played an Ugly Sister in Cinderella back in 2009.

Clocks back 1 hour Sunday October 30th

Sheringham South Surgery and News

Since last writing, all sorts of rumours and buzzes have been spread about the loss of our three senior officers at District Council. Now that the dust has settled a little, let me give you a simple message - all is well! We were badly let down by Great Yarmouth Council and the loss is something we did not expect, nor deserve having held out a hand in friendship. Enough, it is done and I would like to re-assure everyone that it is ‘business as usual’. In spite of dire predictions from political opponents we have a good cash reserve in case the roof leaks and a wonderful and talented reserve of officers with whom we can more than cope! So the message is, don't worry, the ‘ship is steady’!

I would ask any serving or ex serving servicemen and women to back up our Royal British Legion , put your well-deserved medals on and march with me on Remembrance Day, Sunday 13 November, starting at 10.30am at the Salvation Army Citadel on Cremer Street. Are there any retired Matelots and Officers out there from the Navy? I could do with some company! We lead, being the Senior Service (sorry you Pongoes and Brylcream boys!)

Lastly, the old Co-Op store has been taken up - there is a God in Heaven - a bit of life in Church Street, which is great. Again, at this stage a buzz but apparently it's for a ‘Super Drug’ type store. Now all we have to do is sort out Oliviers dress shop as she is retiring. It's the store next to the Church -is there a ‘Coco Chanel’ amongst you?! Dick Shepherd

New Norfolk Beers Shop now open in Sheringham The Giddy Goat shop owner John Morgan opened the doors to his store for the first time in mid-September.

The Tipples Brewery from Salhouse has a large range and their ‘Black Moth Stout’ at 7.6% is one of the strongest drinks available in the shop.

John himself comes from Berkshire. Attracted by Norfolk’s beautiful beaches and, of course the beers, he has settled in North Norfolk. The Giddy Goat is John’s first beer shop.

There is also Cider from The Norfolk Cider Company from Wroxham, which has been in production for over 30 years, and Whin Hill Cider who are based in Wells.

Poppyland is based in Cromer whilst relatively recent to the market they have already won awards for their beers and do a changing and interesting range of gluten free ales.

The shop offers beers and ciders from over 15 local breweries in the Norfolk area. John’s rule for his suppliers is that they must be small and Norfolk based.

The beers in the shop are arranged vertically by supplier on the shop shelves. The bottles are further arranged vertically by beer type with lighter beers to the top and the dark beers to the bottom, and go from 3.2% up to 7.6%.

The Giddy Goat’s suppliers include the popular Beeston Brewery, well respected, with a range of year round and winter ales on the shelves and the Wagtail Brewery, which is based in Attleborough which has many strong Ales to try and has been going strong for 8 or 9 years and, like many local breweries, started as a hobby and blossomed into a thriving business. Some of the interestingly named beers like ‘Chocolate Nutter’ and ‘Hare of the Dog’ are from The Whynot Brewery which is based in Norwich.

Come on by for a look. All beers are bottle conditioned, 80-90% are vegan suitable. The beers are sold in presentation boxes or can be bought as single bottles.

‘Stubbs Mugs’ and various Breweries beer glasses are also sold as associated products again from Norfolk suppliers.

The Giddy Goat is situated on 2, The Courtyard, Station Road, Sheringham, NR26 8RF.

To check stock call John Morgan on 01263 478600 or mobile 07786 288916. Opening hours Mon – Saturday 10-5 Sunday 11 – 4.

Coast Arts 2016 Festival Week

Traditionally Coast Arts has focused on providing a busy programme of arts based events centred on Cromer and Sheringham during the autumn half-term week at the end of October.

“This year in collaboration with our partners, we're putting on over 20 events for the Coast Arts Festival week in October,“ Annie said. “Spreading events through the year has brought its own challenges and has allowed us to engage with more of the community. It's now time to focus on Festival week!”

Spooky goings on in North Norfolk this Hallowe’en

In the build-up to this year’s All Hallows’ Eve, North Norfolk District Council is organising some ghoulish events for all the family!

In Bacton Woods and Holt Country Park you can follow our trail through the magical woods and discover the myths and legends of the areas.

And for all those who enjoy fairy rings and toadstools, join expert Dr Tony Leech on a fungi walk.

Cllr Becky Palmer Cabinet Member for Leisure said “It is getting to that time of year when things goes bump in the night and North Norfolk District Council’s Countryside Team is gearing up for some frighteningly good events in the week before Hallowe’en. Everyone should put the dates in the diary – these are going to be great fun.”

On Monday 24 October enjoy the Hallowe’en Trail at Holt Country Park between 10am and 12pm, or at Bacton Woods on Thursday 27 October between 10am and 12pm. And at 2pm on Monday 24 October join our Fungi Walk at Holt Country Park.

Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club

One of the most impressive sights in Norfolk is the vast number of boats on the Broads, with hundreds visible from a vantage point such as Wroxham Bridge.

Yet among these hundreds there are one or two gems from the past, as Roger Watt, himself a Probus member, made clear in his wellillustrated talk at our lunch meeting on 4 October. ‘The restoration of the wherry Albion` is a story of the skill and dedication of a handful of volunteers based at Ludham.

Originally launched in October 1898, the ‘Albion` was one of over three hundred of these iconic vessels trading on the Broads, but unique in Norfolk in that it was the only one ‘carvel built’, that is having a smooth hull compared with the others that were clinkers. With its huge black 110 square metre sail hanging from its 16 metre mast, the Albion could transport 40 tons of cargo and was crewed by a man and a boy.

In 1949, the dilapidated boat was bought by the Norfolk Wherry Trust, has been lovingly restored to its former glory and now features on the National Historic Ships Register. It is still trying to earn its keep and can be chartered, with crew provided, for the day or, with bunks now fitted in the hold, overnight. A good idea for a special celebration perhaps.

Our next meeting is on Tuesday 1 November at The Links Hotel, West Runton and if you are a retired or nearly retired professional or business man and would like to join us please contact our lunch secretary, Dave Vickery, on 01263 824306 or, to find out more about our club, visit our website www.candsprobus.club

St Andrew’s Ladies Association

The September meeting speaker was Mr Simon McKinna, a volunteer speaker for the Medical Detection Dogs, whose Patron is HRH The Duchess of Cornwall.

The Association receives no Government funding and rely purely on donations for the wonderful work they are doing training dogs to assist individuals managing complex life threatening conditions, to get help and fetch vital medical supplies and the early canine warning system reduces the number of paramedic call-outs and hospital admissions.

The cancer detection dogs assist the early detection for cancers that are currently difficult to diagnose such as prostate cancer. Dogs are chosen for their scenting ability using all sorts of breeds and they work from 9 to 5 each day, going home every evening and weekends to live as part of a family ensuring their welfare and wellbeing. It costs £11,200 and up to 18 months to train one of the puppies.

It gave us all an insight into this wonderful pioneering work which can change lives.

October Meetings : Sunday 23 October - Ladies Association Service at St Andrew's Church, at 10.30am when the Preacher will be Mrs Barbara George. We hope as many as possible of our Ladies Association will be present at this annual Service. 25 October - Crafts and Sales with Christmas in mind. November Meetings : 8 November - An evening with |Jo from the Beauty Box

All meetings start at 7.30pm unless otherwise stated, and we do hope to welcome some visitors. For any further details, please telephone Anne Barker 01263 824887 Sheringham Independent 450

Multi-Faceted Performer Returns to Sheringham Little Theatre

‘An Evening with Richard Digance’ sees the multi-talented artist make another visit to one of his favourite intimate venues, Sheringham Little Theatre, on Saturday 29 October.

Digance is a rare performer in that he is respected by comedians for his original material and by musicians for being an accomplished performer/guitarist. His loyal following confirms his wide appeal, from the younger generation attracted by both his guitar playing and the fact he has inspired many modern-day performers, to the super-loyal who have followed him since the time he had his own ITV series and even further when he started out in folk clubs.

His evergreen career has been acknowledged through numerous awards within both the music and entertainment industries, from a BAFTA Nomination as a TV entertainer to a Gold Award from the British Academy of

On 12 November Age Concern North Norfolk are turning back the clock and getting into the ’60s mood as part of their ongoing fundraising efforts in conjunction with the team from G.I.F.T. (the Good Intentions Fundraising Team).

Their ’60s-themed evening stars Norfolk’s very own Pat James. Fancy dress is optional – as the best costume wins a prize – but either way we hope to see everyone getting in the swing of the party and come and enjoy an evening of live

music and dance. Tickets cost just £7.50 and that includes a buffet. The evening starts at 7.30pm and finishes around 11pm, and is being held at Aldborough Community Centre. For more information, or to reserve your ticket, please call GIFT organiser Yvonne Tiffany on 01263 768076 or by calling Age Concern North Norfolk on 01263 821188 or 01263 823126.

Our next fun quiz night is this coming month, also at Aldborough Community Centre, which is on Friday 28 October staring at 7pm. It costs £5 per person and everyone is welcome. A

raffle and light refreshments will be available on the night. It would be great to see you there for another fun filled evening, to challenge your little grey cells whilst helping to raise money for our much-needed local independent charity.

Age Concern North Norfolk provides care for the older person at our Day Services, which involves personal care, lunch, a bathing service as well as activities. We also have a Befriending scheme and three Keep-In-Touch Groups in Sheringham, Cromer and North Walsham respectively where an older person can meet new friends and get support. We organise regular events and intergenerational activities and are always on the lookout for new ways to expand and outreach to those who are most socially isolated.

Changes to State Pension Age 1950s Women I would like to draw your readers’ attention to the 2.6 million women born in the 1950s on or after 6 April 1951 who have had significant State Pension changes imposed on them by the Pensions Acts of 1995 and 2011. Changes which were made with little, or no, personal notification. Some women had only two years notice of a six-year increase to their State Pension age. In Norfolk it will affect thousands of women in this age group. Many will not be aware that their circumstances have changed.

The issue is that the rise in 1950s women's State Pension age has been too rapid and has happened without sufficient notice being given, leaving no time to make alternative arrangements. Women born in this decade feel they have been seen as a soft target, financially. They have worked hard, raised families, paid their tax and national insurance with the expectation that they would be financially secure when reaching 60. Historically these women had no state funded child-care so leaving work and often taking on part-time, low-paid employment (and unequal pay) as their children grew.

Many of these women are living in hardship. Retirement plans have been

shattered with devastating consequences. Many are already out of the labour market, caring for sick husbands or elderly relatives, providing childcare for grandchildren. Many others suffer age-related illness and discrimination in the workplace, and are struggling to find employment. The inevitable consequences are less money circulating in the local economy a greater strain on local health services, and an underclass of ageing women. Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) is a national campaign asking for fair transitional arrangements for women affected by these changes. We are not against women’s pension age being equalised with that of men.

If any of your readers would like further information they can find it on the group website at waspi.co.uk. We have a Norfolk Waspi Group Facebook Page - Pension Action In Norfolk- PAIN/Waspi in Norfolk. This is a closed group, please send a request to join. Traidcraft

The Fairtrade charity, Traidcraft Exchange, helped 18 projects in 11 countries, last year.

This improved the lives of 558,900 people.

These amazing results mean that over 50,000 tea growers can provide nutritious food for their families, and ensure that their children receive an education. It is a similar outcome for beekeepers in Tanzania, weavers in India and forest fruit farmers in Senegal, and other projects too.

Because of your support for the voluntary stalls selling Fairtrade goods in our area, I have just sent £330 to this charity, (the second similar amount this year).

Well done North Norfolk; you're making a great difference to people's lives! Brenda Smith

Iron Horse back in the saddle

Over 350 members and shareholders had a special treat at an event held for them on 1 October at North Norfolk Railway.

Visitors to the railway’s Weybourne workshops were delighted to see the M&GN Society’s ‘Iron Horse’, War Department 2-10-0 locomotive 90775 boiler reunited with its chassis and wheels – a visual milestone in the process of the loco’s expected return to service early next year in time for the start of the 2017 season.

Society Chairman, Neil Sharpe, said ‘Trustees and members are really pleased with the progress being made. The ‘Iron horse’ really is back in the saddle’.

The Society awarded the contract for the locomotive’s overhaul to the recently established engineering division of the North Norfolk Railway, which has received

considerable investment from the Railway in new facilities and expertise to enable the complete overhaul of locomotives without the need to send them away. It can also undertake work for other heritage lines and locomotive owners. The work on the WD included the complete refurbishment of the horn guides, axle boxes and wheel sets. Optical alignment equipment was used to ensure the accuracy of these components and complex plate renewals were done in the new boiler shop.

Following the successful steam test earlier in the month, the boiler was reunited with the loco chassis in late September. This is a major step in the completion of the overhaul.

Mr Sharpe said ‘The Members and Shareholders’ Day was a huge success giving visitors a wonderful opportunity to see the railway at work and what goes on behind the scenes to make the operation of the railway so successful. The opportunity to see the newly ‘mated’ boiler and chassis was an added bonus and whetted appetites for its return to service in 2017’.

facility, which now has a growing order book for overhaul works including some from Europe’.

The locomotive WD 90775 was built at Glasgow in 1943 as part of an order for the Ministry of Supply. The engine from new was sent abroad to work, and never worked for British Railways. It was repatriated for preservation in 1984, and has been working on the NNR since 2003. It was purchased by the M&GN Society in 2006. The engine is numbered 90775, as the last engine of the same design in BR stock was numbered 90774.

Fundraising for the “Iron Horse Project” has so far raised almost 50% of the estimated cost of the overhaul and return of 90775 to traffic.

Trevor Eady General Manager added ‘the WD is the first complete locomotive overhaul to be processed by the newly established department at the North Norfolk Railway. Our staff have demonstrated the capabilities of the new

Sheringham Lifeboat ‘The Oddfellows’ B 818 Service Launch – Saturday 8 October

At the request of Humber Coastguard, Sheringham Lifeboat was tasked to go to a position approximately 6 miles on a bearing of 275 degrees from the station to investigate what appeared to be a very large yellow object which had been observed by the local coast watch team at Sheringham.

The Lifeboat was launched at 12.30 hrs and quickly found the floating object approx. ½ mile off the beach at Weybourne. The object, a very large metal buoy painted yellow, would appear to be tied to the seabed or at anchor, and is thought to be a mooring buoy (with bollard attached) for the use of vessels working or monitoring the wind farms in the area.

It was an interesting launch.

Addition to car park and toilet plans on part of North Lodge Park Specially designed toilet added to planning application

A new Changing Places toilet for people to use in Cromer has been added into North Norfolk District Council’s plans for the new toilets and car park on part of North Lodge Park.

A campaign for the Changing Places toilet was launched on social media in recent weeks. After seeing the support for the initiative online, Cllr John Rest, North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet Member for Assets, asked for the facility to be included in the designs for the new toilets.

Cllr Rest said “I’m delighted to say that we have altered our design for the new toilets to 16

include a Changing Places toilet. These facilities are much-needed and offer a real benefit to Cromer.

“It made sense to change the designs especially to help people with disabilities who are visiting Cromer. Visitors would be able to park in the new car park, make use of the Changing Places toilet and get easily down to the seafront.

“Good public toilets that offer the range of facilities that visitors now need are essential – especially when we know more people are visiting north Norfolk than before. I’d like

to thank campaigners for raising the issue and giving us the opportunity to provide a much needed facility in Cromer.”

The plans, amended to include the Changing Places toilet as part of the new public toilets and a 48 space car park, are currently out to consultation.

Emma Spagnola, who started the Facebook group said “This is amazing news. It will make Cromer more accessible for many, locals and tourists alike. I would like to thank all the people that have supported the campaign, particularly Tony Clough MBE (Changing Places) and Jane Davis for putting up with my endless questions.”

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER DAHLIAS

Over a period of 18 months, a dedicated team of staff and volunteers at Blickling Hall have turned a neglected events field into a beautiful, productive walled garden, similar to the one that supported the estate up to the late 1930s.

The walled garden produces vegetables and cut flowers and is edged with over 150 fruit trees and it has been interesting to visit the garden regularly as the restoration takes shape. In each season there have been things of interest and the current star of the show is the display of dahlias.

Dahlias have been in and out of fashion since they arrived in Britain from Mexico some 200 years ago. However, current gardeners are again discovering that dahlias are easy to grow and bring wonderful colour to the late summer Sheringham Independent 450

garden. There are few other plants that produce flowers in such an array of colours reds, purples, mauves, pinks, yellows, magenta, orange, apricot and white. There are also the different sizes and flower shapes. The tightly packed perfectly formed petals of ball and pompon dahlias, the multi-spiked flower heads of the small, medium and giant cactus cultivars, the simple singleflowered forms, the water-lily varieties and many others.

Some people consider that dahlias can be garish but they come in such a variety of shapes, sizes and colours that there is a plant for every taste and varieties that will fit into every colour scheme.

Anyone with dahlias in their garden will now be preparing to protect them for the winter. There are many different ideas on how this should be done. Many gardeners lift their dahlia tubers at the beginning of November or after the first hard frost, whichever comes first. Lifting the tubers is also necessary if slugs are a problem but if the garden is

October 22nd 2016

relatively free of such pests, sheltered and with free draining soil you might get away with planting deeply and then giving winter protection with straw or bracken.

If you decide to bring the tubers in cut them down to 6 inches from the soil after the first frost blackens them and dig up the tubers carefully, shaking off any soil. Put them upside down in a seed tray or box for a week or so until any water drains from the hollow stems. When the stems are drained, turn the tubers the right way up and stack them together in a box, covered with old potting compost – keeping the crowns uncovered. They must be dry but not left to dry out completely and should be checked once a month and watered if they are getting too dry. Store the tubers in a dark, dry, frost and rodent free place.

About mid-February the tubers can be potted up and with a little heat shoots are produced to provide cuttings to grow on for next year’s plants. If you are not going to take cuttings, plant the overwintered tubers about 6 inches deep in early April in good rich soil in full sun. The new shoots will appear above the soil about a month later. Sheringham Society 2016 Art Exhibition

Sheringham Society held its popular annual Art Exhibition in August this year at the Masonic Hall. The exhibition provides a great opportunity for local artists to display, and hopefully sell, some of their work. The mayor, David Gooch, opened the exhibition. This year an increasing number of artists (60) displayed their work and 68 paintings were sold. Peter Strudwick and Maureen Gardiner from the Society visited Sheringham Playpark Revamp in October to give the Playpark a cheque for £600, the profit from the art exhibition .The Playpark were very grateful for the donation.

Since Sheringham Playpark Revamp began about 5 years ago, through various fundraising events and donations received from the local community , several improvements have 18

taken place, including:

• increasing the size of and installing some new equipment in the infant area, as well as introducing a picnic area to encourage family use;

• purchasing a pair of football goals with climbing cargo nets;

• replacing the swings which we believe were over 35 years, including a basket swing designed for those who are less able but also a fun experience for all children;

• installing 'The Viper' which is a large rope swing for the older children; and

• installing 'The Rocket Launch’ which is a large rope climbing frame .

The Playpark’s priority is to now roll out new play provision which provides inclusive play that supports those children with special needs and/or physical disabilities, as well as more able children. They would also like to provide accessible outdoor gym equipment for older children and adults.

New joint procurement pest control contract awarded

North Norfolk District Council, in partnership with Broadland District and Kings Lynn and West Norfolk Borough Councils, has awarded a new pest control preferred supplier contract.

The joint procurement contract with Millennium Pest Control Ltd will lead to savings for residents across the three councils and the introduction of a new online booking system to streamline services, giving people the opportunity to book 24/7.

Cllr Tom FitzPatrick Leader of North Norfolk District Council “We’re really pleased to have Millennium Pest Control as our approved contractor and that working on a joint procurement basis with Kings Lynn and Broadland has allowed us to negotiate very good rates for all our residents.

“If you experience a problem with pests in your home you are guaranteed a service costing significantly less than market rates.”

From 1 October 2016 anyone in the three council areas experiencing a problem with pests, such as bed bugs, rats, fleas, cluster flies, carpet beetles, mice, wasps, or cockroaches, should contact Millennium Pest Control via their council website.

Cllr John Fisher, Broadland District Council’s portfolio holder for environmental excellence, said “This new contract shows excellent partnership working between district councils, and one that delivers great value services for our residents in Broadland.”

A new online booking system will ensure residents’ concerns are dealt with as soon as possible. And for an extra charge, there will be an express service.

Millennium Pest Services will deliver quarterly reports to each council ensuring their environmental teams are aware of services provided and any complaints made. If there are wider pest control issues in any of the council areas, these will be tackled as normal by the councils’ enforcement teams.

Importance of a Will what will you leave behind?

Clapham & Collinge Solicitors support local Will scheme

Having a Will allows you to decide what happens to your assets on your death. Without a Will, your estate, which is everything you own such as: your property, bank accounts, pensions and personal possessions, will be distributed in accordance with the Intestacy Rules. These rules are arbitrary and take effect irrespective of whether or not you would have wanted the distribution. Everyone should consider whether or not they need a Will and then aim to review it at least every five years to check that it reflects any changes in their personal or financial circumstances.

Clapham & Collinge has always been a big supporter of charities and has previously taken part in Will Aid, as well as the Marie Curie Will Scheme that took place 1st May – 31st July this year. This October we are taking part in the scheme Norfolk Will Help. The scheme is a local Will scheme, supporting the following charities: Nelson's Journey, Age UK Norwich, The Benjamin Foundation, Norfolk and Norwich Association for the Blind (NNAB) and the Big C. NORMAN LAMB CALLS FOR CHANGE IN THE LAW TO REQUIRE MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID IN THE WORKPLACE

Norman Lamb MP is calling on the government to commit to equality for mental health in the workplace by amending health and safety legislation to require all employers to provide Mental Health First Aid.

Mr. Lamb made the call in a Parliamentary Motion to coincide with World Mental Health Day 2016, which this year focuses on the importance of ‘psychological and mental health first aid for all’. The campaign was launched in collaboration with MHFA England, a leading provider of mental health first aid training across the country, with the support of the mental health charity Mind and leading businesses WH Smith and Unilever.

Currently, the main legislation which relates to first aid provision in the workplace focuses on physical illnesses and injuries and is silent on the mental wellbeing of employees. Mr. Lamb’s Early Day Motion marks the first step

in a new campaign urging the Government to address this lacuna in the law, and update guidance for employers to ensure that they are clear about their obligation to support workers’ mental health.

Having staff trained in Mental Health First Aid can help to prevent someone’s condition deteriorating when they are experiencing a mental health problem, by providing initial support until professional help is received.

Recently, a major new survey by Business in the Community, in collaboration with MHFA England, found that employers across the UK are failing to provide adequate support for employees or equip managers with the skills to help them. More than three quarters (77%) of employees have experienced poor mental health and nearly two thirds (62%) have identified work as a contributing factor, the Mental Health at Work report found. Despite this, over half of employees (56%) who disclosed symptoms of poor mental health said that their employer took no actions to address this and only 1 in 5 managers (22%) had received appropriate mental health training. WHSmith and Unilever have now pledged to lead the way in supporting the mental health and wellbeing of employees, while also calling on the Government to act to bring parity to mental and physical health in the workplace. WHSmith has committed to training 1,100 line managers in Mental Health First Aid over the next 12 months, in a bid to ensure that the company has as many mental health first aiders as it does physical first aiders.

Mental Health First Aid training provides people with the skills to recognise the symptoms of common mental health problems, provide initial support to prevent the problem from getting worse, and effectively guide a person towards the right support services. To date, almost 150,000 people in England are trained in Mental

Health First Aid.

Norman Lamb MP, who recently became a trained Mental Health First Aider, and has written to the Work and Pensions Secretary to request a meeting to discuss a possible change to the law, said “The bias towards physical health in first aid legislation is a clear example of the discrimination against mental health in society, which cannot possibly be justified at a time when more and more people are reporting that they have struggled with mental health problems at work.

“If mental health is to be treated in exactly the same way as physical health, every organisation should have trained Mental Health First Aiders just like they have physical first aiders – and I am in no doubt that this important principle should be enshrined in law.

“On a personal level, my eye-opening experience of Mental Health First Aid training was not only incredibly helpful but also emotionally powerful. Most of all, it brought home the absolute importance of listening to people’s concerns, giving them time to express themselves and making sure they understand that there’s nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed about.

“If we can stop people’s condition deteriorating and guide them to help, we can have a big impact on their lives. Sickness absence and unemployment related to mental illness is an enormous burden on the economy, so the economic as well as the moral case for all employers to adopt Mental Health First Aid is overwhelming.

“I was very pleased to highlight this important issue in Parliament on World Mental Health Day, particularly given this year’s theme of ‘psychological and mental first aid for all’. The Government should act without delay to amend first aid legislation to include mental health, and make it clear that employers’ responsibilities in the workplace relate to the mental as well as the physical wellbeing of staff.”

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

The branch has been very fortunate in recent years to have been left money by cat loving supporters who want to continue to help needy cats in our area. As the money has been left to the charity we do have to advise Cats Protection how it will be spent. When large amounts are received the money cannot be spent on day-to-day running expenses but used for specific purposes. One of the ways we have tried to make a difference is by running our £5 Neutering Campaign to ensure that we help people on low incomes and benefits to get their cats neutered. The money has also been used to pay for neutering feral colonies. At present, with the help of members of the public, we are dealing with three colonies. One of these colonies has been particularly challenging as we have, over the past 15 months, taken in over 50 kittens as well as neutering about 20 adults. Unfortunately, some of the kittens have eluded capture during this time and therefore, when they are eventually caught and neutered, need to be returned to site because they are too old to accept a change in lifestyle. With the help of a determined neighbour we will get them all in the end.

As a few of our pens are now quite old and need replacing, we are also using some of the money we have been left to purchase new pens. We are at present awaiting the delivery of new double pens at the homes of two of our fosterers. This means that, at present, we cannot take in as many cats because the existing pens have been dismantled, new bases have had to be laid as the new pens are bigger than the existing ones, and these have also been tiled. They should be in place by the time you read this, although we may still be waiting for electricity supplies to be reconnected. The new pens are made of UPVC rather than wood and should be easier to clean. If everything goes to plan we will include a photo with the next article.

We recently advertised our first ‘Cats Protection Bingo’ and are happy to report that £278 was raised for the cats. This event proved very popular

and several people wanted to know when we would be having the next one. Rachel and Ant, who worked very hard and organised the event, have said they will arrange some more next year. Turtle, Bear, Panther and Puma Thank you to Lovely young cats, neutered, vaccinated, chipped all who were and ready to leave for new homes involved in making this such a success and for all those who supported the event.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

Dear Margaret,

On 5 October, I fell and cracked my skull open causing loss of blood quite quickly.

I would like to thank Ben at Centra Care and Support for his advice and help, St John's Ambulance team, who professionally cared and took me to Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital and A&E there, where my gash was glued.

An unpleasant incident but with the extremely efficient people on duty I was sent home the next day.

BERTIE & THE BANDITS - POPPYLAND SONGS

The concert will include new musical arrangements of poems and tales collected before the First World War by Christobel ‘Kit’ Hood from the men and women who lived and worked on the land.

Life in this remote rural part of north Norfolk was very different in those halcyon days before the London journalist Clement Scott first encountered the remains of St Michael and All Angels church in Sidestrand. So inspired was he by the lonely tower standing at the cliff edge, surrounded by waves of wild poppies, that he described it as The Garden of Sleep, and so created the romantic mystique of Poppyland.

But these original songs and poems pre-dated Clement Scott. Local historian Kit Hood recorded the words as remembered by the folk of Sidestrand and neighbouring parishes. However, she did not record the tunes, and only now have they been set to music by her

great-great niece Bertie Anderson-Haggart.

As a child, Bertie was familiar with the hand written words in the leather bound note books, as she was born and raised in Kit Hood’s house opposite the church in Sidestrand.

Bertie will be performing these previously unknown songs, and some of her own written to commemorate the joy of Poppyland history, singing with her sister Evie Anderson, and their professional musician friends from London, violinist Anne-Marie Kirby, ‘cellist Rhiannon Lock, and Emma Price on flute and accordion. The songs include tales of the Maid of the Mill, Louie Jermy, the elegant daughter of the Overstrand miller, Sally Bean, the local gin smugglers’ favourite moll, The Mundesley Shepherd’s ode to the Mun Beck river, and the extraordinary story of Sidestrand church being moved inland by Sir Samuel Hoare (father of Kit Hood and MP for Norwich), leaving only the medieval tower to its fate on the cliff edge. The concert tells how the collapsing tower and the First World War swept a whole way of life into the history books.

Both Bertie and Evie’s first music lessons were with Cromer postman Terry Keeler on piano, and Bertie learned violin with Norman Moor

Walking Festival

Half term looms, and parents and youngsters are thinking about things they could do together, or indeed, separately. The problem can be finding something that has elements that will delight everyone in the party.

What we can offer on Sunday 23 October, as part of the Norfolk Walking Festival, is a day out that won’t break the bank.

Bertie Anderson-Haggart with her daughter Poppy at Sidestrand church, birthplace of Poppyland

when she was 4 years old. They both attended Overstrand Belfry primary school before receiving scholarships to the Purcell Music School, and the Royal College of Music and Birmingham University.

Bertie is currently musical arranger, voice and viola player in the BeauBowBelles band and the Bowjangles string quartet and appropriately her daughter is called Poppy.

Evie has returned from London to teach singing and music in and around Cromer and is voice coach to the Sheringham Little Theatre productions.
