Dr Sampson retires Continued from front cover...

Dr Sampson grew up in Windsor and went to school at Haileybury School in Hertfordshire, which was founded in 1862 by the East India Company. After his schooling, he attained his medical qualifications at St Mary’s Paddington where he met his wife Gillian, who is a Consultant Dermatologist, and they have three children, James, Edward and Clare. He is a keen sailor and has a wealth of experience in local waters. Sheringham Lifeboat Chairman Phil Hawes, Dr Peter Sampson & Sheringham Lifeboat Operations Manager Brian Farrow

Lifeboat Operations Manager Brian Farrow said “The honorary role of Lifeboat Medical Advisor is a critical function in helping to manage a lifeboat station and Dr Peter Sampson had undertaken that role here at Sheringham with distinction since 1998”

On Sunday 24 October, Dr Sampson was presented the RNLI Gold Badge and to mark his retirement, an engraved glass photo frame from the Sheringham Lifeboat Management Group and an engraved slate plaque from the lifeboat crew.

In a short speech Chairman Phil Hawes thanked Dr Sampson for his commitment to the RNLI over the past 18 years, wished future health and happiness to Dr Sampson and

his family and expressed delight that he was staying in the immediate area and the hope that he would stay involved with the lifeboat management group.

North Norfolk Speakers Club

North Norfolk Speakers Club recently held their annual Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contests in North Walsham.

The winner of the Humorous Speech Contest was Club President Jennie Douse, who amused the audience with a speech entitled 'Mother and Mayhem'.

The Table Topics Contest was won by Julie Rubidge who imaginatively responded to 'You have found some money on the floor- how much is too much to keep for yourself'.

North Norfolk Speakers Club Contest winners Jennie Douse, left, and Julie Rubidge

Both contests were smoothly organised by Clive Willet, who also chaired the Humorous Speech Contest, while David McNaughter chaired the Table Topics Contest.

Members and guests enjoyed a very entertaining evening and Jennie later went on to gain a well-deserved third place in the Area Humorous Speech Contest in Dereham.

North Norfolk Speakers Club meets every other Wednesday at 6.45pm at North Walsham High School, Spenser Avenue, North Walsham. Guests and new members are always welcomed.

Sheringham Dementia Friendly Community

It was in November 2015 that Sheringham along with Cromer was launched as a Dementia Friendly Community. A dementia friendly community is a community where people with dementia can: • find their way around and feel safe • access their local facilities • continue participating in social activities and clubs We are one of 14 towns launched in the last 2 years in Norfolk by Norfolk Age UK, supported by Lottery funding, Victory Housing Trust and Norfolk Community Foundation. Our aim is to work with Sheringham businesses, local organizations, schools, Churches and local health providers to ensure that Sheringham becomes a Dementia Friendly Community, by increasing awareness and providing support and guidance to those living with dementia and their carers. We are now a year on and in that time we’ve successfully held 3 free workshops for local businesses and organizations run by Norfolk Age UK. The workshops have provided the people who attended with an understanding of some of the problems faced by those living with Dementia and a dementia toolkit with practical tips and hints on preparing their business. Along with networking with local businesses and shops we have developed a local source of dementia friendly signage and information, supported by the Alzheimer’s Association. In January 2017 we’re planning to hold an update for the town. If you would like to get involved with our local steering group or would like more information about Dementia Friendly Communities, please contact us for more information: Janet Eastwood Tel 01263822719, Roy Farthing 07818 068362; email us sheringhamdfc@gmail.com or follow us on facebook.

THE RNLI Remembers

Between the years 1936 and 1961, the RNLI Sheringham Lifeboat, Foresters Centenary, served the cause of saving life at sea. Over that time, she was launched 129 times saving 82 lives and is known as the Airman’s Lifeboat as she saved more downed aircrew that any other lifeboat in the UK. The photograph is of Helmsman Chris Taylor and Chairman Phil Hawes of Sheringham RNLI who visited the Foresters Centenary this week. Chairman Phil said ‘Whilst our prime focus is importantly on the capability of the RNLI today and our continued dedication to saving lives, it is important that we do not forget our heritage and the proud tradition we have inherited. We are here today firstly to pay our respects and to draw attention to two important anniversaries that fall at the end of this month. They should not be overlooked for both speak of the heroism of Sheringham men. The boat they took out to save all those lives is still wonderfully preserved and displayed here in the town’s museum. It ought to be a source of pride to

Space does not allow the stories to be told in full - rather I would wish readers to want to find out more for themselves - visit the town’s library and come here to The Sheringham Museum to touch history and pay tribute.’

Panto time for Tick and Tock the comedy crocs

A pair of specially-made crocodile puppets will spell double trouble for Captain Hook at a north Norfolk pantomime.

Mr Leech designs characters for famous puppet makers Pelham, and said he enjoyed the challenge of being asked to make a croc for the first time.

The pirate baddie from Peter Pan famously lives in fear of a croc that swallowed a crewman's alarm clock, and also snacked on his hand when it was cut off in a swordfight with the boy who never goes up.

"David was great. We had a meeting, and I described these two crocs, including their personalities and appearance. He immediate came back with lots of ideas and examples," said Mr Earnshaw, who has directed the Sheringham Panto twice before.

But show director Nick Earnshaw has decided to have two of them to add a new dimension to the classic adventure tale.

And the puppetry doesn't stop at the crocs, with Mr Earnshaw promising more marionette magic in the panto show.

He turned to top puppet maker David Leech, having worked with him on a student drama production of Sheringham panto creator and director Nick Theatre director Debbie The Lonely Goatherd Earnshaw with Tick and Tock the crocodile Thompson said “Peter song from the Sound Pan is already a magical puppets of Music at a festival story but the crocs, and in his home town of Stone in Staffordshire. other puppetry involved, really puts the icing on our annual Christmas cake.” "I had the idea of splitting the character in two and making it twin brother crocodiles. That The panto tells the timeless tale of Wendy way we could have sibling rivalry within the Darling and her younger brothers enjoying story to add a fresh twist. stories of Peter Pan’s adventures including battling with the evil Captain Hook, amid "They are a straight man and a fool. One is knockabout humour, swordfights, fairy posh with a monocle, the other crazy with red magic, song and dance. hair - partly based on my sons.”

Peter Pan runs from 7 December to 1 January, with two shows a day, and including some dates especially for schools.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER DAISY, DAISY

daisies, which open white and then slowly fade to pink and finally turn red providing an ever changing display. The flowers are attractive to bees and butterflies.

Walking around the garden on a chilly and damp November morning, it is always cheering to see splashes of colour. The nerines are possibly the showiest flowers but the last of the dahlias and chrysanthemums and some of the perennials such as gaura and salvias are adding to the interest.

However, the most floriferous plant in my garden at the moment is, without doubt, the daisy, Erigeron karviniskianus ‘Profusion’. Coincedentally, this has just been featured as the plant of the week in the Daily Telegraph and it is easy to see why this plant is so popular and has earned the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit. It is commonly known as the Australian daisy or Mexican fleabane. I was told by a football fan that the plants colonised the concrete terraces of the stadium built in Mexico for the 1970 World Cup. This small, spreading plant flowers non-stop for most of the year and is covered in small dainty

01692 405301

I first saw this plant at Great Dixter in Sussex, the wonderful garden of the late Christopher Lloyd where it had seeded into cracks in walls, the paths and crevices of stonework. It has done exactly the same in my garden and also appears unexpectedly in the vegetable beds and pots on the terrace. It is so free seeding that it is considered a serious weed in New Zealand, where it is prohibited to sell the plant. Conversely, the Daily Telegraph is currently offering three plants for £11.99 plus P&P of £4.95! It is probably better and much cheaper to grow the plants from seed as they will flower within two or three months of sowing. In common with many rock-dwellers, Erigeron karvinskianus makes strong, wiry tap roots that drill into the spaces between rocks ensuring that the plant is firmly fixed and drawing on water and nutrients to help it to grow. It is thereby possible to make a ‘daisy wall’ by mixing a little

seed with well-crumbled, dampened soil and pressing it into the cracks between stones. With luck, they will germinate and the plants will root deep in the cracks and crevices. General cultivation is easy - they prefer full sun but will tolerate shade and are not fussy about soil. If the plant gets floppy, it can be cut back by a third in early summer. It associates well with Alchemellis mollis (lady’s mantle) which self seeds just as freely and provides lovely contrasting texture and form. One book I read recommends dead-heading the erigeron but this would be a never -ending task. If any admirer of your daisy wall asks for a bit of one of the plants it is possible to pull out a root and pot it up but this form of propagation is not easy – far better to hand over a few fluffy seed-heads.

Finally, a visit to Sheringham Park this month is well worthwhile as there are a number of rhododendron in flower to cheer up the dog walkers. They look quite incongruous against the autumn foliage but are still very welcome.

Different Strokes to say Goodbye

It has been decided by the Committee of North Norfolk Different Strokes that the Sheringham branch will cease to be a charity at the end of December 2016.

The charity was formed in 2007 for stroke survivors and their carers, providing support, exercise sessions and social activities.

We have helped many members to gain confidence and to move on with their lives. But, with falling membership and lack of funding, it is with sadness that we have decided that the time is right to finish.

Doug and Sandra would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has helped and supported us through the last nine years. Sheringham Independent 452

Cantamus Choir: Christmas in a Small Country Church Cantamus was the inspiration of Margaret Hunter, a member of the congregation at St Margaret's church in Thorpe Market. Founded in 1998 by Ro Curtis, the choir fast established its reputation by successive music directors, as a choir with a wide repertoire who performed great choral works. Their annual event came to be loved by all, the 'Christmas Concert’ - its setting quite iconic in the picturesque church at Thorpe Market, lit only by candlelight, holly-entwined wooden staves at the end of each pew, beautifully chosen carols and mulled wine to lend further warmth. For the last five years, the choir had been based in a number of other venues. In September 2016

the choir returned to its roots and was welcomed once more at Thorpe Market church, a venue well known for its support of the arts and with vastly improved facilities to stage performances and exhibitions.

Cantamus is now led by a new Director of Music, Philip Adams. An experienced former chorister and organist who held a number of significant directorships across the country. Whilst in Brighton he organised concerts for the Brighton Festival, and sang with the Brighton Chamber Choir. He also taught music for 25 years at Cumnor House School, in Sussex.

Rosemary is an experienced Bowen therapist offering this unique therapy at Randells Healthcare, Augusta Street, Sheringham.

There will also be Christmas readings and congregational carols.

This will take place in the candle-lit church of St Margaret's, Thorpe Market, and to complete that typical 'country church at Christmas' ambience and for everyone's further enjoyment, there will be a glass of mulled wine during the interval. It would be hard to find a more iconic setting. Do come along and join us.

The Christmas Concert is on Friday 9th December at 7pm. £8 New Director of Music Philip Fee on entry of which 50% of all Adams income raised will be donated to the ‘new organ’ fund at Thorpe Philip will be presenting a Christmas Concert Market church. this year with an innovative programme, quite different from the usual year-in, year-out St. Margaret of Antioch, Poppyland Group of repertoire of concerts prior to Christmas. What you need to know about planning a Lasting Power of Attorney

By Lin Whitehead, Partner and Head of Wills, Trusts and Probate Department at Clapham & Collinge Solicitors

If you lose mental capacity because of dementia, you will need someone else to manage your legal, financial and health affairs. Having a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) in place can be just as important as having a Will. It gives you the reassurance of knowing your wishes will be respected if at any time in the future you become unable to make decisions for yourself. Before you have your LPA prepared there are some important factors for you to consider.

whom you have a settled and easy relationship. The person or people chosen must be absolutely trustworthy and possess appropriate skills to make decisions on your behalf. They must be over 18 and not be an undischarged or interim bankrupt person, if you are making a Property and Affairs Power.

How many Attorneys should I appoint? You can appoint one Attorney but it is advisable to appoint more than one or a replacement, to lessen the chance of abuse and ensure continuity in case your chosen Attorney cannot act. If you choose more than one, it is essential that those people get on with each other.

Who should I choose to act as my Attorney/s? You should choose a person or people with

How do the Attorneys know what to do? They must always act in your best interests as set out in the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and follow the guidance contained in the Code of Practice to the Mental Capacity Act 2005.

How should my Attorneys act? If you have more than one Attorney, you will need to decide whether you want them to act: Jointly - always together - If they are appointed together, they must always sign together and agree which can be difficult in practice. Additionally if one dies, loses mental capacity or becomes bankrupt (if the Power is a Financial Power), the document can no longer be used. Together and independently – they can act either together or entirely independently of each other. This works well when the Attorneys do not live near to each other or, if one were to retire or die, then the other Attorney could still act. A combination - you decide which decisions they have to make together and which independently.

What if my circumstances change? You should consider appointing a replacement Attorney to provide for a situation that your chosen Attorney is not able or is unwilling to act. If you appoint your spouse or civil partner, be aware that dissolution of the marriage or civil partnership terminates the appointment of your spouse/civil partner, unless you have indicated otherwise. On Wednesday 7th December, Clapham & Collinge Solicitors and AgeUK Norfolk will be delivering a training session for businesses and individuals to help understand Dementia and the legal consequences. New Norfolk Lettings Company hits the ground running in Cromer…

Last month, Gemma Bailey (formerly Lettings Manager of Harrisons Estate Agent) opened the doors to her new office on Garden Street, Cromer.

Gemma was integral in winning her team the ‘Best Letting Agent in Norfolk 2016’ award in January. This was after rave reviews from clients and she is bringing her brand of industry expertise, local knowledge and networking skills to her new business.

"I created The Norfolk Lettings Company because I have a passion for offering a top notch service for clients wanting to let their properties (whether long term or holiday lets)," commented Gemma. "I offer competitive and transparent rates (no hidden fees!) coupled with being ARLA (Association of Residential Lettings Agent) qualified, and will offer a fantastic, local and good value service to landlords who appreciate a common sense approach to managing their properties."

Within the first few weeks of trading, Gemma is already receiving great feedback and support from tenants and landlords who have been matched together.

“If you’re looking for a tenant for your property or you’re a tenant looking for a new home, get in touch, I can help!” Call 01263 513399, email info@thenorfolklettingscompany.co.uk visit www.thenorfolklettingscompany.co.uk or search The Norfolk Lettings Company on Facebook and Twitter!

North Norfolk Photographic Society – a distinguished visitor

Those who read reports of the North Norfolk Photographic Society will have come across the ‘RPS’ - the Royal Photographic Society.

North Norfolk Photographic Society members were privileged to entertain one of the best photographic teachers in the country on 19 October.

Formed in 1853, the RPS is a nationwide society (with international membership) whose object is to promote excellence in photography in all its forms.

Gavin Hoey travelled up to Holt from his home near Gatwick to give his presentation ‘Snap Happiness‘. Gavin’s teaching videos are very popular not only in the UK but also in the USA, and he explains in a fully understandable way how to achieve some of the results that Photoshop, for example, can provide.

One of the RPS’s key activities is to admit members to its ‘Distinctions’, an assessment of standards basically, starting from the Licentiate (achieve this and you can put LRPS after your name) then Associate (ARPS) and the top distinction, Fellow (FRPS).

He started to demonstrate how to create a 180 degree panorama, and he did it twice - once in full PhotoShop and then using the simpler programme, PhotoShop Elements. Then he showed his way of editing a picture of the RNLI pier at Selsey, and how to merge a scene with no less than five images of himself in different attitudes. Not necessarily something that you would want to do every day, but still!

Ian Wilson, ARPS, Regional Organiser for the RPS, came to Holt from Cambridge to tell members about these distinctions, and the procedures to follow in seeking to achieve them.

One key part of this is the submission of a ‘panel’ of usually 10 or 15 images to demonstrate the applicant has the necessary technical and imagination skills required. This was admirably demonstrated by Ian showing a dozen or so ‘panels’ submitted by successful applicants, which was a show in its own right.

In the second half of the meeting, Gavin invited a club member to act as his model, which Howard Denner duly did. Using just one light, he took several portrait pictures, ending up by putting a scarf and hat on poor Howard, taking his photo and then through software adding a snowstorm. All indoors and fully explained.

Some were panels of prints and some were panels of projected pictures, and a lot of discussion took place about the best presentation of such panels. With prints in particular, regard needs to be paid to the overall appearance of the panel as a whole - they should be set out in an arrangement that does them most credit, having regard to colour, shapes, light and dark, etc.

Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are normally held on the first and third Wednesday of each month at the Holt Community Centre. For further details please contact the Club Secretary, Judith Wells at secretary.nnps@gmail.com.

We will walk through the wood, down to the canal and then loop back to the car park (about 2 hours). We then drive to Bacton Woods for a walk. This section should also be about two hours, and the car-park is on the NE side of Bacton Wood (postcode NR28 9UE). We at C.A.S. Travel, Sheringham are running for the 4th year our very successful Santa’s Sleigh Appeal. We will be having a Santa’s Sleigh in our branch between 12 November and 10 December and are hoping to fill the sleigh with lots of lovely toys and goodies which will then be presented to Break Charity on 13 December. Break Charity will then distribute the gifts to the vulnerable children, families and young people they work with.

We would be so grateful if you would be able to help us with this worthy cause and donate a small gift, child’s book or toy, unwrapped from a baby to a teenager. All we ask, is that you pop it into the branch unwrapped by 10 December.

The BeachLife light party in Sheringham on 31 October was a great success, with games, challenges, craft and a short talk, largely on the theme of space. Forty three primary age youngsters attended the event at St Peter’s Church in Sheringham, organised by the BeachLife team. They enjoyed a variety of games and activities, although the short talk was interrupted by the visit of an alien! The afternoon was rounded off with pizza and chips.

Maggie Rothe, one of the organisers, said “It’s great to see so many local children enjoying a great fun afternoon, without the need for anything macabre, scary or dark.”

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We now have cats in all four of the new pens and both our fosterers are delighted to once again be helping needy cats. Although several cats and kittens have recently left for new homes, including Beth, one of our long term residents, their places have already been taken by cats from our waiting list. In a recent article I mentioned Cats Protection’s Skye, lovely friendly concern with regard to the problem of kittens being bred and sold in poor welfare conditions by girl about 5 years old individuals more motivated by money than their welfare. They are now asking for the help of like minded people to change the law to protect kittens sold that are underweight, under eight weeks old, in poor condition and flea and worm infested. The adverts are often misleading, some giving the impression that they are purchasing a pedigree cat, although there is no documentary evidence of this; some even claim the kitten is, for instance, a Ragdoll/ British Shorthair cross (or other combination of breeds), when it is apparent from the photos that it is just an ordinary little moggy. Others will charge more for a certain colour, while the most important factor should be the kitten(s) temperament and sociability. It has also been noted that when a person is regularly advertising kittens on these websites, then it is not an instance where there was no intention for the cat to have kittens, but they are being deliberately bred to sell. Because Cats Protection sees so many abandoned and unwanted cats and kittens, we all believe it is important that legislation is in place to safeguard vulnerable animals. For cat lovers with computers you can read more about this at www.cats.org.uk/truecostofkittens. Approaches will be made to the Minister responsible for animal welfare to (1) end sales of kittens under eight weeks old (2) regulate repeat breeding for sale from the family cat (3) define commercial pet sales to protect the welfare of kittens bred for sale. If you would like to support this action, please contact us via the Cats Protection website or at our Christmas Sale, where we will be able to go into more detail. We do feel strongly about this as there are so many cats and kittens out there needing homes, some of which have been abandoned because they are surplus to requirements, so deliberately breeding and selling kittens, just add to our workload. A recent instance of this was the little kitten, which had obviously originated from a home, which was found abandoned on the road. The person who found it initially thought it had been in an accident and was going to place it on the verge. When he discovered it was alive and not injured, he took it to one of the vets we use, where it was placed in intensive care. Thankfully, it has now recovered. If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign. If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. You can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.
