Sheringham Christmas Tree Festival

Covering Sheringham, the Runtons, Holt and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and North Walsham Times

St. Andrew’s Methodist Church Sheringham extends a warm invitation to enjoy the atmosphere in your build up to Christmas by visiting Sheringham’s seventh Charity Christmas Tree Festival which will take place from Thursday 8 December to Sunday 11 December.

Organised jointly by St Peter’s Parish Church and St. Andrew’s Methodist Church, the festival is a major event for Sheringham and provides a spectacular spiritual platform for charities to raise funds by attracting donations from visitors.

Last year’s event was hosted by St. Peters Parish Church and raised over £5,000 for the 41 charities that took part. This year around 30 local and national charities will be represented.

Each charity will decorate its tree in an imaginative way that will uniquely portray the charities aims. There will also be a prayer tree where visitors will be able to write a prayer and display it on the tree.

Stitch Together for Big C

On 2 November the StitchTogether Sewing Group presented Sheringham Big C Shop Manager, Maureen Nash, with a cheque for £1329.25.

These funds were raised from sales of handicrafts, car boot sales and a quilt raffle in memory of friend and fellow stitcher, Marion Patmore, who sadly lost her battle against Breast Cancer last year.

The group would like to express their thanks to all local people and visitors for their generous support.

Sheringham Town Christmas Lights 2016 Switch on took place on 18 November.

The fantastic illuminated parade of bicycles and scooters (and prams and pushchairs!) was the brainchild of Graham Curlew (also known as Jumbo). He originally envisioned a parade of festively lit motorcycles but when Health & Safety advised against that he was thrilled to switch to bicycles and scooters as it meant all the children could be actively involved.

Once again, the town community has come together and made this a fantastic night. It was wonderful to see so many happy children taking part and the carnival committee plans for this to be held again next year. The carnival committee thanks all those who took part in the shop window competition, organised by the Chamber of Trade. Winners were Miss Madeleine's Gift Emporium, The Sitting Room and Driftwood Gallery.

We would also like to thank Tesco for providing free mulled wine and fruit for all those gathered for the start of the parade and thank

you to Sainsbury's for free sweets and chocolates! Thank you to Tony and Luke for the fabulous Hog Roast and thanks to all the other stalls.

Thanks go also to Sheringham Primary School Choir, Ukelele Club and Handbells.

Thanks also to the Little Theatre for showcasing Captain Hook and the children's cast from this year's pantomime, Peter Pan.

More thanks - to Town Crier Andrew Cunningham Brown, an excellent host, to David Starling for starting the Countdown, to Mayor David Gooch and to all in the Salvation Army for their wonderful and festive music.

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS? SOLICITORS?

Finally, thanks to Paul Starling for organising the evening, to the hardworking bucket collectors who collected £390.28, marshals and first aiders and to Stuart, Graham, Steve and all the crew who suffered wind and rain and cold but achieved their deadline in getting those lights up!

“It’s a common misconception that a larger firm is better.”

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor, qualified Family Mediator and Collaborative solicitor.

As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. The common misconception is that a larger local firm or city firm is better but this is incorrect. A client just pays more.

When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I am one of the few solicitors that offffers a free first appointment so that clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision.

I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.

“I would say to any potential client to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.

Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 0 1263 8 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk 01263 823465

New waste and recycling information for North Norfolk Christmas, New Year and 2017 wheelie bin collection dates

New waste and recycling calendars will help people across North Norfolk understand how their bin collection dates will be affected by public holidays such as Christmas, New Year’s Day and Easter.

Every year North Norfolk District Council’s collection dates over the Christmas period and other public holidays differ slightly, sometimes taking place a day or two earlier or later than expected.

“The calendars are being delivered to everyone across the district with a wheelie bin. We hope they will help people organise in advance when to put bins out for collection especially over Bank Holidays. “It’s a really good idea to keep the calendar somewhere safe that you can see easily as a reminder of collection dates. I always keep mine on the kitchen pinboard so I don’t forget.” New garden waste calendars are also being delivered across the District and will be left under the garden waste bin lid or posted through residents’ doors if their bin has not been left out.

The new calendars show when wheelie bins will be collected over the next 12 months, from this December through to November 2017. Each calendar is specific to the usual day of collection, so people with Monday collections will receive different calendars to those with Tuesday collections and so on.

The calendars show any changes to collections as a result of public holidays by showing the actual collection date highlighted in yellow. If the dates have not changed they will appear in white. On the reverse side it illustrates what can go in the green recycling bin. Calendars will be hung on wheelie bins following emptying.

The information can also be seen online at www. northnorfolk.org/ bincollection. Simply enter your postcode and then select your property.

Delivery of the new calendars began last month, taking place on collection day.

Happy Birthday PD Taxis During November 2015, PD Taxis was launched and has not looked back since, and now after completing his first year, the business has gone from strength to strength. In the last year owner Pete Thorogste has enjoyed watching his business grow and with it the cliental. Pete says, “Sheringham is a wonderful place to live and work and I have had genuine pleasure to be of service to established customers and new alike.“

With expansion has come the opportunity to employ a second driver - someone who can concentrate on providing a super competitive service to Airports, not only Norwich but all over the country.

“I have bought a six seater, which is perfect for families and larger parties, and ideal for the forthcoming Christmas and New Year party season. One of the cars has DVD screens in the rear headrests, so that on long distance or airport transfers you can keep the little ones amused with their favourite movie. Applications will be sought in the New Year for a seasonal third driver to further enhance availability along with the purchase of another new vehicle.

many groups as possible join us at this service so on behalf of the people of North Norfolk I can thank them for all their hard work; their dedication to helping others in all walks of life is a lesson to us all."

Chairman’s Volunteer Service

A special church service will be held at Cromer to say thank you to the people who volunteer their time and effort to help others.

Cllr John Lee, Chairman of North Norfolk District Council, has organised the special church service in February as a way of thanking all the people who go out of their way to help the community.

The Church Service will be held on Sunday 26 February 2017 at Cromer Parish Church at 3pm and it is hoped there will be an opportunity to showcase the work of voluntary groups across the district at the venue.

Cllr Lee said “In the six months that I have been Chairman of the Council I have been honoured to attend many events that recognise the fantastic work carried out by different volunteer groups across North Norfolk. I would be delighted if as

SKIP AND POPPYLAND BLOOMING AGAIN!

Cromer-based author Keith Skipper and Poppyland Publishing’s Peter Stibbons have joined forces for the third year in a row to provide another colourful addition to the local literary scene.

Keith’s A Rum Ole Norfolk Year, his 40th volume with that distinctive local flavour, is crammed with notable nuggets mined from over 30 years of keeping a comprehensive daily diary.

He says the general idea behind these month-by-month selections is “to salute the downright silly, acknowledge the outstanding achievers, bless those able to brighten the bleakest of days and congratulate all with a penchant for attracting publicity in the name of home-grown posterity.”

There are a few recurring themes, such as loyal service to local communities and the changing face of Norfolk life, but all those years of eavesdropping and jotting around his native patch tend to emphasise a natural passion for the mildly unbecoming or markedly unusual.

“When I started to keep a full-page daily diary just as 1984 dawned, I knew there must be room for smaller local items to spice up my pages and underline Norfolk’s well-deserved reputation for dewin’ diffrunt and then confusing the rest of the world even more by chuckling at the results.”

Peter Stibbons adds “This follow-up to Norfolk in a Nutshell and Keith Skipper’s Norfolk Scrapbook looks like completing a successful hat-trick for our cheerful partnership of recent times. Skip has a prolific pen and it’s always fun to combine our efforts in the name of homely entertainment.”

A Rum Ole Norfolk Year costs £9.95. Skip will be signing copies at the Jarrold book department in the Cromer store on Saturday, 10 December between 11am and 1pm.

PM and Chancellor must deliver Equality for Mental Health, urge North Norfolk MP and former Health Secretaries The cross-party ‘Equality 4 Mental Health’ campaign, co-founded by North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb, has won the backing of nine former Health Secretaries in calling on the Prime Minister and the Chancellor to address the continuing injustice suffered by people with mental ill health in next week’s Autumn Statement. The health secretaries, who served under both Labour and the Conservatives, have been joined by seven former health ministers, the former Chief Executive of NHS England, a former Permanent Secretary at the Department of Health, the current chair of the Health Select Committee, and leading mental health charities Mind and Rethink Mental Illness. The 'Equality 4 Mental Health' campaign was launched ahead of last year's spending review by Lib Dem MP Norman Lamb, Tory MP Andrew Mitchell and Time to Change Ambassador Alastair Campbell. 250 leaders from across society joined the demand for an end to the historic injustice of discrimination against the mentally ill within the NHS, and the then Chancellor George Osborne recognised the work of the campaign in announcing an extra £600m for mental health services.

However, many of the examples of injustice and discrimination that were identified a year ago are still all-too-evident evident today.

Many mental health trusts continue to experience cuts to their budgets despite the rhetoric of ‘parity of esteem’ from Government and NHS England. Suicide remains the biggest killer of men under

01692 405301

the age of 45 in the UK. Mental health research receives a disproportionately small amount of public funding, and flagship new treatment standards for people suffering from a first episode of psychosis have not been backed by the necessary resources.

In her first speech as Prime Minister, Theresa May promised to fight “burning injustice” in British society, highlighting that there is too often “not enough help to hand” for those who suffer from mental health conditions. She is right, and now has the opportunity to address this. Norman Lamb, the Liberal Democrat spokesperson and former Minister of State for Care and Support, said “It is a stain on our country that people with mental ill health are so often treated as second class citizens. Last year’s joint statement sent a powerful message that this cannot be tolerated, but still we are reminded on a weekly basis how people with mental illness are left without the treatment and support they desperately need.

“Promised investment hasn’t made the difference many expected – especially in services for children and young people, where the majority of mental health problems begin. At a time when the prevalence of mental illness seems to be rising, it would be negligent for the Government not to act. Alastair Campbell, former Director of Communications to Tony Blair and co-founder of Equality 4 Mental Health, said “We welcome the fact that stigma around mental illness is decreasing but are concerned that the services are not there to match the need. The Prime Minister’s expressed com-

mitment to tackling the growing mental health crisis is welcome, and the Autumn Statement is a golden opportunity for her to deliver on this rhetoric.” Andrew Mitchell, Conservative MP for Sutton Coldfield and former International Development Secretary and Government Chief Whip, said “We are concerned at the new evidence emerging of inequalities in the mental health system based on age, gender, ethnicity and social class. Promised funding for children and young people’s mental health is not getting through to where it is needed in many parts of the country. NHS Digital has also exposed a dramatic increase in mental illness andself-harm among young women in recent years, while people from Black British communities and lower-income households are less likely to receive treatment for common mental disorders. People of all political stripes, who share a belief in the fundamental principle of equality for mental health, must work together to make this ambition a reality.”

Sheringham South News and Dates (apres Trump!)

This is being written from my nuclear bunker which I have hastily dug! You couldn't write a better story but there you are, that's Democracy and we live by it.

I am not afraid to say that I predicted Therese May as PM and for Brexit to happen nearly two years ago. Now is your chance to have a pop at me and Judy, next date at the Community Centre as usual 12noon to 1pm on Friday 16 December. Come laden with either presents or rolickings. We do have a free issue of tin helmets and flak jackets! jackets!

Please don't forget your bonfires and the neighbours washing in the meantime.

As this is the last message before Christmas, we would like to wish you all a Very Happy Christmas and a hope that we can serve you all in the New Year with a District Council that is the envy of the Nation, with our Officers winning plaudits and awards that are nothing to do with us, your councillors. We are so lucky to have so much talent in house.

As your representative on the Police and Crime Panel, I must mention that we had a major meeting on Rural Crime, which I've been after for some time. Every time a Church gets raided for lead I have a nasty curdling feeling inside. We are so vulnerable. If you live near one of our beautiful Churches and have a restless night, please take yourself or the dog (he may

St Andrew's Ladies Association

Our evening on 8 November was with Jo and Maddie from The Beauty Box, and was very much enjoyed by all the ladies.

Experts with make up, they used their skills to enhance the features of one of our ladies, whilst we all watched with interest. This lady looked lovely when she came in but Jo was able to enhance her beautiful eyes even more. Their products look lovely, although a little expensive, but with Christmas coming, perhaps Father Christmas could help in this direction.

Jo and Maddie themselves glow with good health and are wonderful exponents of good health and the make up which they sell.

Our last meeting will be our Christmas Lunch on 13 December when we will once again go to Dee's Diner to celebrate - a relaxing and enjoyable day before all the celebrations begin and most of us will be involved with cooking etc at home!

KELLING PROBUS CLUB NOVEMBER MEETING

Kelling Probus Club held its November meeting at the Dales Hotel, Upper Sheringham on 17 November.

After their regular tasty lunch and fellowship, where there is always an enjoyable exchange of the past months events in our lives and even the odd joke, we settled down to an informative and interesting talk by member John Hancock.

John talked about money through history, and of his own interest in collecting historic coins and currency. Although original trade was done by barter, the Chinese soon found a need for coins made from bronze well before Christianity, and the Romans made coins from 400 BC in silver and gold. The Persian empire, which spread across Africa and Europe, were the main users prior to this, as their empire was a major trader with the rest of the world. In Britain the early coins were Celtic then Roman after the conquest - later we had Saxon currency. The first bank notes were printed in 1694 and have been in use ever since. John talked of Norwich, and particularly the association of the Gurney Bank with early modern currency. Christmas Market at Garden Centre Overstrand not a wash out

On Sunday 6th November Garden Centre Overstrand, supported by Sheringham based events company Ruth Elizabeth Events, hosted a Christmas Market. Despite the weather, people turned out in their hundreds to stock up on decorations, gifts and festive treats courtesy of the array of local exhibitors at the event. Over 1200 people attended the event, packed with over 20 local exhibitor stalls, along with Radio Norfolk who featured the event on the popular Sunday morning

show, Treasure Quest, where Sophie found the treasure hiding with Thor the Great Grey Owl owned and raised by Norfolk based bird of prey sanctuary, Norfolk Wild Encounters.

The Garden Centre staff worked tirelessly in the week leading up to the event to get everything ready for the day and were on hand throughout the day to answer any queries customers had and to keep down the queue at the tills.

Sam Lowe, Manager at Garden Centre Overstrand, said ‘As the Autumn Market was such a huge success we were really keen to have a repeat event. We are passionate about supporting local businesses and will be looking at delivering more of these events as

we head into 2017’.

Following the success of the recent events at Garden Centre Overstrand, more events are to be announced for 2017.

For more information or to book an exhibitor stand, please contact Ruth Lowe on 07747 161880 or info@ruthelizabethevents.co.uk

Norfolk Orbital Railway

THE NEXT PUSH - HELP RAISE £6,000 FOR THE NEXT STAGE OF LAND PURCHASE … MEANWHILE, THE FIRST PIECE OF TRACK IS TO BE LAID! bed extending our existing section towards

In the last update we reported on the successful purchase of the track bed and bridges at Pudding Norton, Fakenham, which will provide the northern part of the extension from the Mid Norfolk Railway's Wymondham - Dereham route on to Fakenham.

MNR is itself rapidly extending its track beyond Dereham northwards towards North Elmham and recently ran a loco-hauled inspection train to within 150 yards of Worthing level crossing.

This time, we are able to demonstrate physical

progress on the ground at Holt. The aim there is to construct an initial embankment over the track bed which we already own beyond the North Norfolk Railway's present terminus, so that track can be laid as a demonstration of our aims and progress and to display an item of rolling stock.

We are grateful to the North Norfolk Railway, which has agreed to provide the track and the piece of rolling stock.

As previously reported we are in the process of purchasing a second, longer, section of track

Holt. Two of the four stage payments on this purchase have been made, and we now need to be ready to make the third payment of £15,000 at the end of the year. Fundraising has made considerable progress and only some £6,000 is needed to complete this sum.

Standing order donations help enormously by providing a steady flow of income while one-off donations will help to build up the £6,000 shortfall in the limited time available.

Joint appointment signals innovative approach at NNDC

An innovative approach has been adopted by North Norfolk District Council to provide the council with clear leadership and a dynamic structure for the future.

At the full Council meeting on Wednesday 16 November elected Members appointed corporate directors Nick Baker and Steve Blatch as joint Head of Paid Service.

Nick and Steve have worked at the authority for a total of 35 years. They have provided clear leadership and have a deep understanding of the challenges facing the district.

Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “This innovative approach will enable the Council to be bold and decisive as we face future challenges. Our focus has always been to deliver an excellent service for our residents and to do that, we need to ensure we get the very best from the talented team of managers and staff we have here. I’m absolutely delighted that the Council has taken this approach and this will not only deliver a dynamic new management style, but it will also help us move forwards. Team work is an essential part of local government and by appointing both Nick and Steve as joint Head of Paid Service, it shows the faith and confidence we have in our existing staff.”

This approach will build on the strengths of the senior officer team, deliver £240,000 annual saving to the Council, whilst ensuring the council can move forward quickly and effectively on an agenda which will continue to be community focussed.

As well as the appointments at Full Council, the Council agreed to fund £500,000 to support the Bacton and Walcott Coastal Management Scheme, agreed the Economic Growth Strategy and Action Plan – to support businesses and attract more people to the area and signed off a Housing Strategy to address the housing and infrastructure needs for people in the area.

Cllr FitzPatrick said “These appointments show the authority is decisive,

effective and is always prepared to adopt new ideas and ways of working. We have a winning team in Nick and Steve and as we look to the future, I’m confident we will manage our services with a theme of continuous development and for the benefit of the people of North Norfolk.”

Both Mr Blatch and Mr Baker have many years of experience of frontline service delivery, with Mr Blatch specialising in planning, economic development, housing and community engagement, and Mr Baker specialising in waste, environmental protection, civil contingencies and contract management.

In a joint statement Mr Blatch and Mr Baker said “We will play to these strengths giving strong technical leadership and resilience. We are both honoured the Council has appointed us and thank members for their confidence. We look forward to working with the Council, partners and local communities to help North Norfolk realise its full potential both economically and socially.”

Get ready for Christmas with our treatment combinations Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic is fully equipped with 16 state-of-the-art lasers and experience of helping thousands of people.

Dermal fillers have enjoyed tremendous increase in popularity. Unfortunately, success has brought lots of untested products, as well as untrained or poorly trained operators. Recent studies have shown an alarming rise in side effects with some studies showing as much as 25% complication rates.

Complications that we are particularly worried about are infections, direct injection into an artery which can cause catastrophic effects, Venous compression and more worryingly some cases of chronic pain. Permanent fillers are more of a problem because they do not stay confined but they can spread into the tissue planes, which may make surgery necessary if expression by needle fails.

Dr Sanjay gheyi MBBS MS FRCS BCAAM is medical director and laser surgeon at the Coltishall Cosmetic clinic and has been injecting safe dermal fillers for over 11 years with outstanding results. So, what are his tips for safe treatments and to minimise risk of complications.

a reputable product with a proven safety track record is used and that an experienced cosmetic medical practitioner administers it. Recently there has been a surge of new fillers coming into the market but a lot of these have far less research. The latest treatment is not necessarily the greatest. You do not want to be a guinea pig for an untested product. Choose that safest product and avoid permanent fillers.

Why treatment combinations? A number of changes happen to us as we age. We have volume loss, muscle over activity, sun damage and loss of elasticity. No single treatment can address all of these issues. Treatment combinations provide the best and natural results. We have invested in top of the range comprehensive technology and have the experience of using it effectively. We have designed these packages for reversing age related changes in one appointment. A kind of mini extreme makeover! you can find out more by calling 0800 0430737 or log on to the website www.coltishallclinic.co.uk

1. Choose your practitioner wisely - what is their background? Do they have a medical qualification? Have they had any training in dermatology or surgery? How many treatments have they done and can they show you their results? This is very important because the person administering these treatments should not only be excellent at treatments, he or she should be able to manage complications should things go wrong. There is no shortage of people from different medical and even non-medical backgrounds offering these treatments. Remember you get what you pay for and cheapest is often not the best!

2. Choose your clinic wisely - do they offer a variety of treatments or do they have only one or two treatments that they can offer? Are they trying to fit you to a treatment rather than offering you most suitable treatment from a range of different available options? Do they provide information on side effects? No medical treatment is risk free. You have to know possible side effects and then make an informed choice. 3. Choose your product wisely - the most important thing is that

High Seas, Shantymen and Lifeboats

So, who do we thank for this musical and humorous extravaganza?

Charity Concert on Cromer Pier

“On a cold winters night with the storm at its height the lifeboat answered the call” - words from the well-known lifeboat song ‘Home from the Sea’ written by Phil Coulter.

And so it was that on Sunday 6 November, 400 or so brave souls battled their way along Cromer Pier into the bitterly cold northerly gale with rising seas, determined to make it to the Pavilion Theatre, to listen to one of their favourite groups perform, what is becoming an annual event, their end of season concert, more than ably assisted by the redoubtable Norfolk raconteur Keith Skipper.

The whole concert was a cracking affair, kicking off with an upbeat version of ‘New York Girls’, and culminating with that most ebullient of sailor’s friends, ‘Maggie May’!

The concert was interestingly, and most expertly interspersed, with wit and humour from Keith who is renowned for his love of all things Norfolk, particularly its dialect and kept

Well, firstly we thank Cromer Pier for allowing us to use their premises at a greatly reduced cost to enable the Shantymen to further benefit the lifeboat crews at Sheringham and Cromer, in particular Debs and the box office crew and Phil and his backstage crew.

us entertained with his Norfolk explanations of common English words and stories of pigs in wheelbarrows.

Of course, the main purpose on the evening was to provide financial assistance for the two lifeboat stations at Sheringham and at Cromer. Members of both crews were invited to attend the concert and sat very patiently throughout the evening waiting for their turn to shine they did not appear to be bored at all!‘

Of course, we thank Keith Skipper. Not only for his Norfolk squit during the concert, but also his expertise and enthusiasm during the preparation and build up to the performance. It is a little known fact that Keith is a Deputy Lieutenant of Norfolk and was awarded the MBE in 2007. (He assures me that it doesn’t stand for Member of Beeston Eccentrics!) We thank the Sheringham Shantymen for their time and effort in putting on the show, especially the small band of dedicated guys who thoroughly enjoyed putting the thing together.

Eventually, Coxswain John Davies (Cromer Lifeboat) and Senior Helmsman David Hagan (Sheringham Lifeboat) were invited on stage with the other crew members (both male and female) lining the front of the stage to join in the singing of ‘Home from the Sea’.

John and David were then presented with cheques by Sheringham Shantymen Chairman, Bob Hawkins for £1,424 each, this being the amount of money paid for tickets by those brave 400 or so souls (less a few quid for expenses)

Finally, it would not have been possible without the attendance on an awful night of the people from near and far who braved the elements to have a damn good night out.

- MUSICALLY SPEAKING!

The Copeman Centre at Briston was again packed with music lovers on the night of 11 November. They had all come along to see and hear organ superstar Andrew Nix weaving his musical magic at the Roland digital organ! Yorkshireman Andrew played a wide selection of music, including such gems as the rousing march ‘With Sword and Lance’, ‘Telstar', ‘Ghost Riders in the Sky’, a selection of well-known tunes penned by Sigmund Romberg,’Wedding of the Painted Doll’ and Bob Dylan’s haunting ‘Make You Feel My Love’. Between numbers, his saucy north country humour caused lots of giggles in the audience too. As usual, it was a great night of live musical entertainment, with quite a lot of new faces in the packed crowd of listeners. Proceeds from the raffle and refreshments as usual were for the Copeman Centre’s own fundraising - a wonderful £169, and the charity stall raising funds for the wonderful ORBIS charity we support made an additional £49 as well!

Our next show is on Friday 16 December, when you are welcome to join us for our Christmas Extravaganza; this will feature organ and keyboard gems from local entertainer Mick Leary and friends, aided and abetted by some of the wonderful band of helpers at these shows. who will be adding a bit of light-hearted humour to the proceedings. The whole point of this evening is not just to give you a super night of music and mirth for just £6, but to raise funds too for our chosen charity, the ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital project - last year’s efforts raised around £1000 for this very worthy cause - see more about them at www.orbis.org

The show starts at 7.30pm, doors open at 7pm, and advance booking is essential, which you can do by ‘phoning Carol on 01263 860844. you can see more details about all the Briston Organ Shows on our new website, www.bristonorganshows.co.uk

biggest dance tracks from the last 20 years to life.

The music started with a chilled set and, as the sun went down, the vocalists and USO’s dynamic musicians ramped things up as the evening exploded into festive-club mode with accompanying lasers and the crowd sang along and bounced in appreciation. The inaugural event was declared a smash hit by organisers and thousands of revellers from across the region clamoured for its return. Well the date has now been set, so keep Friday 11 August 2017 free and sign up early if you don’t want to miss the fun next year! There are a limited number of early bird tickets available NOW at a reduced price of £30 (£35 thereafter). It will be the summer’s coolest classical dance party says Lisa Ward of Revival Productions “There’s something really special about the combination of a beautiful National Trust setting and a set that gets absolutely everyone on their feet dancing and singing to some of the biggest club tunes of the last two decades. The crowd were fantastic this year and the performers had a great time too! They cannot wait to return in 2017.”

Classic Ibiza 2017 will be very much along the same lines with the best Ibiza anthems being brought to life by the uber-cool Urban Soul Orchestra, with international DJ Goldierocks mixing an exclusive, crowd-pleasing set. The orchestra will be fronted again by super-talented vocalists who excelled at getting the crowd going, with one change from last year, bringing in Roo Savill who was unable to perform this year as she was on tour. “These guys are at the top of their game and we’re delighted to have them all on board again for 2017. “

At 8pm on Friday 11 August, the Urban Soul Orchestra will start the evening with a fabulous ‘chill-out’ set featuring some of the best iconic Ibiza tracks including, Les Nuits – Nightmare on Wax, Massive Attack’s ‘Teardrop’ (medley), Groove Armada’s ‘At the River’ and William Orbit’s version of Barber’s Adagio for Strings.

During the interval, Goldierocks will take over the stage and fill the Blickling evening air with her creative mix of top Ibiza tunes. Jagger, having performed exclusively for them all.

As the sun goes down, the Urban Soul Orchestra return with vocalists that ooze talent and charisma, Jina Burrows, Roo Savill and Maxamillion Barnes-Davy, will bring their own flavour of Ibiza as they join Goldierocks on stage for the second half of the concert; this is when the party really starts.

There will be 5 new tracks in the 2017 playlist and concert-goers will have the opportunity to choose two of them by selecting their favourites from a list of 10 iconic tunes to be revealed later. The programme will once again create a club-atmosphere with a fantastic laser-show cutting through the night sky in sync with the music.

Tracks will take the audience on a white island journey through hugely popular club anthems including Fat Boy Slim’s ‘Right Here, Right Now’; Faithless “Insomnia”, Chase and Status “Blind Faith”, Underworld “Born Slippy” and Swedish House Mafia “Don’t You Worry Child”. Lisa said: “Next year, the crowd will know what to expect so we’re even more excited, we have never received such phenomenal feedback from any event before. In fact, it was such a success that we are taking it to other venues around the country next year – it’s clearly a formula that works.”

So, sign up for your early bird tickets now for an unforgettable party under the stars. The concert is expected to sell-out and you really wouldn’t want to miss it! Gates will open at 6pm and you can bring your own picnic (or order a Carluccio’s special), or buy at one of the top food outlets onsite; car-parking is FREE (both for coaches and cars).

North Lodge Park – Car Park Proposals

A further consultation on proposals to create a car park on part of North Lodge Park is being undertaken following receipt of additional information and amended plans. The consultation period will end on Wednesday, 7 December 2016.

The changes to the proposal are: • The design and access statement for the proposal has been updated to include a statement on the impact of the proposals on the conversation area, • Revised layout for a 47 space car park to create more room to access the ramp by the proposed toilets • Inclusion of motorcycle parking provision • A new lighting column next to the pay and display machine

Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council said “We will be re-advertising the proposals in light of minor changes to the design following comments already received through public consultation.

“I hope this will give people the time to comment and make their views known prior to the meeting of the Development Committee in December. Sheringham Independent 453

North Norfolk District Council hosts exhibition of silver and gemstone jewellery OPEN TO THE PUBLIC & TRADE

New Exquisite Crystals collection showcases locally hand-crafted items North Norfolk District Council’s public art gallery welcomes local artist Bev Harding with a collection of jewellery.

Cromer resident Bev has been making costume jewellery and gifts for over 25 years.

This intricate collection demonstrates a variety of craft techniques, many of which have been self-taught. Bev’s jewellery showcases gemstones and pearls, as well as interesting reclaimed and recycled elements, some beachcombed around Norfolk’s coast.

Bev said “My work really reflects where I live and where I come from; the reclaimed items I use come direct from my environment, while the beauty that can be created from silver and gemstones mirrors seas and skies and the light we experience here in Norfolk.

“I’m so pleased to be able to exhibit at the District Council.” Bev’s exhibits will be for sale and she is available to make bespoke commissions in the run-up to Christmas.

Cllr Becky Palmer Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture said “It’s great to be able to offer craftspeople and artists a space to exhibit their works. This is a lovely collection of handmade jewellery and we are pleased to be able to host them.”

Exquisite Crystals runs from 24 November to 25 January, 2017 at the NNDC offices gallery in Holt Road, Cromer.

The 1st Floor Gallery is open to the public Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 8.30am-5pm, Wednesday 10am-5pm and Friday 8.30am-4.30pm.

NNDC seeks to offer free opportunities to local artists to display their work in the well-lit gallery and in turn provides staff and visitors to the building the opportunity to see a variety of different artists’ work. Currently six exhibitions are held annually. 27

Lecal Solicitor urges caution about using Government’s ‘risky’ online legal tool By Fiona Hewitt, Solicitor and Director of Elderly Client Services at Hayes + Storr

Fiona Hewitt, Solicitor and Director of Elderly Client Services at local law firm Hayes + Storr, has joined a number of organisations representing older and vulnerable people to raise serious concerns around the Government’s online tool for creating Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs).

An LPA is a powerful legal document that allows a person to appoint trusted individuals to make important decisions about care and finances on their behalf, in the event of a loss of mental capacity through an accident or illness such as dementia.

In May 2014, the Government’s Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) launched its online LPA tool, which it claims allows people to create the documents without the need for professional advice from a solicitor.

But a new report, published by a coalition of organisations led by national member organisation - Solicitors for the Elderly (SFE), warns that anyone creating an LPA without taking specialist legal advice faces a significantly higher risk of being left with an ineffective legal document, incurring additional application fees, and even becoming a victim of fraud or coercion.

The report also raises concerns around the potential of a completely digital system proposed by the OPG, whereby ‘wet signatures’ – the physical signing of the document – would no longer be required.

Fiona Hewitt is a full accredited member of Solicitors for the Elderly (SFE), and said:

“The prospect of being able to submit an LPA application entirely digitally is extremely concerning, and raises some serious questions around the potential for fraud and financial abuse.”

During a study conducted for the report, participants were invited to

create LPAs using the OPG’s online tool and other ‘DIY’ methods. The study revealed that some of the forms did not accurately express the way in which participants would want their affairs and welfare to be handled in the future and that documents made using DIY methods were more likely to contain elementary mistakes, rendering them ineffective and requiring additional application fees. Following consultation with a solicitor, most participants made significant changes to the permissions of their documents regarding how and by whom their affairs were managed.

June McSparron, a 75-year-old who participated in the study, said: “You’re exposing yourself to a lot of risk by filling this form in on your own. There are so many bits that you can get wrong, and you can easily be pressured into making choices that you’re not entirely comfortable with.”

The number of LPAs being registered has increased steadily since the launch of the online tool, with over half a million registered in 2015/16 alone. The OPG is actively trying to convince more people to apply for LPAs online, having set a target for the service to comprise 30% of all applications from April 2016 to March 2017. In its latest Annual Report, the OPG even admits it is willing to take ‘risks’ in striking a balance between ‘empowering and safeguarding’.

With the OPG already receiving over 1,000 calls to its contact centre every day, the organisations behind the campaign say the Government body is potentially exposing people to unacceptable levels of risk and in doing so may be compromising its ability to safeguard those who are most vulnerable.

Fiona Hewitt said “an LPA is a powerful and important legal document which allows you to pass potentially life-changing decisions about your affairs on to a third party. It’s absolutely right that people should be planning ahead for the future with LPAs, but granting someone this sort of authority over your affairs is an extremely big responsibility for all parties involved. This is a specialist area of the law, and we recommend that anyone considering an LPA goes to a legal expert to ensure they get the right advice, consider all the options, and safeguard themselves for the future.” To download the report ‘The Real Cost of DIy LPAs’ go to: http://www.sfe.legal

Norwich City Review

by Joel Lodge, our Football Correspondent

As of writing this article, Norwich, seem to find themselves in a difficult situation and are spiralling down in form. After 5 consecutive losses, Alex Neil is in a precarious position after losing 2-1 away to QPR. This has left Norwich drifting further away from the automatic places as Newcastle and Brighton have continued with their good form as Norwich start to drastically decline. One of the key issues that has been highlighted over the past few weeks is the defensive woes of Norwich City, leaking in the second worst amount of goals in the league (just behind Rotherham). The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over but expecting different results, Alex Neil continues to play the same defenders making mistakes such as Russell Martin; we have the same defence as we did when we were in the

New Yoga Class in Sheringham

Premier League 4 seasons ago with the only changes now being Pinto and Klose. This is not Neil’s fault, clearly, but the recruitment team and the board need to have a clear vision of where they want to be as we don’t want to be drifting between the Championship and Premier League. I'm personally a fan of Alex Neil, however I think a change of personnel is needed, but who to replace him with? My personal option would be Sam Allardyce, as long as it was feasible following the allegations with his involvement with third party ownership of players. Allardyce has a proven track record from managing teams like Bolton, Newcastle and West Ham and I believe he would get us out of the division.

Oddfellows Hall are pleased to announce that the Monday afternoon Yoga Class run by Elaine Smith has now been taken over by Paula D’Attoma.
