Lights Up!

Is a sub committee of Sheringham Carnival, all volunteers, whose purpose is is to raise money for Sheringham Town Christmas Lights and, this year, a charity of choice—Love For Leo, an amazing charity helping children with cerebral palsy.

The variety show raised £1816.71 and a bucket collection raised a further £180.73. As a result a cheque for £1,500 was presented to Moss Taylor & Robina Churchyard from Love for Leo. The balance goes to the Town Christmas Lights Maintenance fund.

Congratulations to all in the Lights Up! Team.

Dame Mary Archer presents local musician with top award

Lys Morgan-Hart, Director of Music at St Peter’s Church, Sheringham, has been awarded The Archbishops’ Certificate in Church Music. This professional qualification from The Guild of Church Musicians was recently presented at a prestigious ceremony in London, by the president of The Guild, Dame Mary Archer, and the Bishop of Norwich, The Rt Revd Graham James.

The degree-level course demands a high level of study and includes various written and practical examinations, as well as extensive portfolio and essay work. It usually takes several years to complete, but it took Lys just 8 months! Not only was she successful, but she gained such high marks that The Guild also awarded her The Maynard Prize in recognition of her “outstanding achievements”.

Lys was the only musician in the UK this year to be awarded the Archbishops’ Certificate and can now append the letters ‘ACertCM’ after her name.

Following the presentation, Lys said “I am really thrilled to have achieved this award. I have been passionate about Church music from a very young age and I continue to be so! I was especially pleased to have so many friends from St Peter’s and beyond come to support me (a coach load!). It was truly such a special occasion, and it has encouraged me to further develop our choral singing at St Peter’s to be the best we can be!”

North Norfolk District Council staff member wins national award

Leader of NNDC’s Democratic Services Team has been named Democratic Services Officer of the Year.

Emma Denny was presented with the prestigious award by the Association of Democratic Services Officers in recognition of her commitment to the District Council, her development of innovations and best practice, and her delivery of excellent service to customers above and beyond the call of duty.

Emma said “I am really proud to have received this award and to be acknowledged by ADSO.

“The work of Democratic Services Teams across local government authorities is incredibly important. At North Norfolk District Council we are a small council and a small team and I hope that this award proves you don’t have to be part of the largest authorities in the UK to be good at what you do.”

The winners of the ADSO Awards were announced last month at a conference in Nottingham.

Cllr Judy Oliver Cabinet Member for Democratic Services said “This is a well-deserved award. Emma is a dedicated leader of the Democratic Services Team and we’re very pleased to have her expertise within North Norfolk District Council.”

St Andrew's Ladies Association

We are now at the end of our meetings for this year, with the final one being the lunch on 13 December at Dee's Diner. Our meetings re-commence on Tuesday 10 January 2017 when Clare Mayell will come to talk to us from Silver and Ward Solicitors.

On 24 January we look forward to hearing Maggie Roffe who will tell us all about ‘Julian of Norwich’ and this promises to be very interesting. We look forward to seeing all our members and do please bring any friends who might be interested in any of our evenings. For any further information, please contact Anne Barker on 01263 824887

A happy and healthy New Year to everyone and grateful thanks to the ladies who arrange all our evenings. Sheringham Independent 454

Sheringham South News

Just got back from Rome having spent four days spending money! Met the first ÂŁ7.50 cup of coffee outside the Vatican, Oh dear! Wonderful city though and quite got me fired up for Christmas, which reminds me - HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND A GREAT NEW YEAR to you all from Judy and me!

Sheringham Christmas Lights Switch On was probably the best I have seen for a long time and the weather was kind to us. Lovely to see the parade of children and the smiley faces. Thanks as usual to the Salvation Army and the Ghastly Captain Hook, great stuff from our Little Theatre! We covered ‘potholes’ earlier and we seem to be okay but if you know of any then please tell me (01263 824662). Just a quick report now as your rep. on the Police Crime Panel...

I've always tried to be hot on Rural Crime which was given a low priority for years. The PCC is now ensuring that we have more dedicated people and has organised a combining of Lincs/Cambs/Suffolk forces to tackle this. It cost East Anglia ÂŁ30 million over a year and covers Hare Coursing, Church lead theft, Domestic oil theft and Farm machinery. There has now been a significant number of arrests due to shared intelligence.

We all need to be aware and call in any suspicious movements on 999, particularly in the hours of darkness and related to churches and transport of farm machinery.

Funny old times, I wonder what 2017 will bring?

Dick Shepherd

Do something amazing this year and support an older person in Norfolk

For some people, growing older can bring about social isolation, anxiety, frailty and loss of independence.

Age UK Norfolk is the first and most trusted port of call for so many older people and their families. Volunteers are the lifeblood and backbone of the local charity, which is calling for new volunteers to help them continue supporting older people in Norfolk, just like Roger Parsons.

Roger retired to Sheringham after a long and varied career in the ministry. He was ordained in 1969 and led two London parishes, in Clerkenwell and Hoxton. Today, Roger lives in a care home in North Walsham and finds that he now needs some support from others. Roger has regular visits from Brenda Barnes, an Age UK Norfolk Advocacy volunteer. Brenda helps to keep his finances and paper work in check – including tracking down his will.

Silver & Ward will continue to be one of the few solicitors to offer ALL the following services:

Brenda said, “From my work in banking, I was used to dealing with money and filling in forms and I thought, ‘I could do this for other people’, so I decided to become a volunteer.

Last year, the Age UK Norfolk Advocacy service carried out 3,487 home visits and helped people to deal with a combined total of ÂŁ27,440, of personal debt, which for some older people could mean the difference between heating and eating.

If you could help make a difference, contact Age UK Norfolk on 01603 785 241, email volunteering@ageuknorfolk.org.uk or visit www.ageuknorfolk.org.uk.

Early Bird tickets now on sale for The Great British Proms at Blickling Hall which will be performed by a Norfolk-based, traditional pipe band. Scottish greats including “Skye Boat Song”, “Scotland the Brave” and “Flower of Scotland” will be performed before the pipe band walks up through the centre of the crowd to mark the end of a truly memorable first half.

The event, previously known as the Last Night of the Blickling Proms, returns in 2017 as The Great British Proms. The programme, which contains a veritable British feast of music from across the home nations, is being planned for what has become an annual favourite in the Norfolk calendar for 1000s of concert-goers. The event takes place at Blickling on Saturday 12 August and there are a limited number of early bird tickets available now.

The National Symphony Orchestra will be performing iconic music from all corners of the UK - it will begin with the National Anthem. Following on from this there will be representation of some truly rousing English classics including the “Dambusters” March, “I Vow to Thee My Country” and “The Archers” theme tune! We will then move across the water to the Emerald Isle, from where the orchestra will play “Danny Boy”, “Irish Washerwoman Encore” & “Toss the Feather”, a favourite in Irish dance music.

The second half will see the National Symphony Orchestra, whose international reputation for excellence puts them in the top four orchestras in the UK, return to the stage to perform all the Proms favourites including “Rule Britannia”, “Land of Hope & Glory” and British anthem “Jerusalem”.

It promises to be a celebratory evening featuring some of Britain’s best artists and musicians, so come and join in the fun at the event that has become an annual favourite for thousands of concert-goers who know they can expect a very special evening.

The orchestra will then continue its journey back across the Irish sea to Wales from where the Classical Brit Award-winning Welsh vocal group, Only Men Aloud, will bring their breath-taking sound to the Blickling audience - they will be singing rugby favourite “Bread of Heaven” and other Welsh favourites. Then, it is time to head north for music from the Scottish Highlands,

As well as having FREE parking (for both coaches and cars), guests can bring their picnics and champagne, wave their flags, sing along and soak up the atmosphere with friends in the outstanding Blickling Hall setting. The evening will conclude with a stunning fireworks finale over the lake, choreographed to the music.

Don’t miss out – a limited number of Early Bird tickets are available now at a reduced price of £30 (£35 thereafter and £38 on the night) and event details are available online at www.revival-productions.co.uk or you can call the box office on 01630 674342.

Grants available for AONB projects

Do you need funding to get your local project off the ground? Will your project positively benefit the landscape of the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB)? If so, keep reading…

In 2017-18 the Norfolk Coast Sustainable Development Fund (SDF) will once again be available to support projects which look after the AONB. A grant of between £500 and £5,000 may just be that final piece of funding you need to

December at 3pm followed by mulled wine and mince pies. Family Service on Christmas day at 10am, bring your Christmas presents to show. A Holy Communion service will be celebrated separately after a short interval for those who wish to stay. All welcome.

do your project.

Kate Dougan, who administers the fund, said “We are looking for projects in the AONB which promote sustainable development. In other words, they should promote the health and well-being of the environment, people and economy, now and into the future.”

She went on to say “Ideas are warmly welcomed from local community groups, parish councils and individuals. Over the past 12 years we have supported over 60 recipients providing over £450,000 of grants and this has brought fantastic benefits to the Norfolk Coast. We look forward to continuing this in 2017-18.”

A wide variety of projects can be considered, so long as they fulfil the criteria for the scheme. Previous projects have included pond restoration, landscape heritage, school wild spaces and equipment for traditional industries (reed-cutting and blacksmithing).

If you have an idea, start by looking at the Sustainable Development Fund pages on the Norfolk Coast Partnership website: http://bit.ly/1ZMKPI7 where you will find more information. Before you complete an application you are welcome to chat through your idea with Kate by contacting her on kate.dougan@norfolk.gov.uk.

Pop on your woolly hat, slide into your fluffy socks and swap the duvet for your coat. Christmas is here. All along the Norfolk coast birds are flocking in their thousands, using our county as a winter retreat. At Cley, wigeon, wintering wildfowl and waders gather on the water. Bearded tits immerse themselves in the reeds. Snow buntings forage on the beach. Marsh harriers silently search for their prey.

Come evening, starlings congregate in the skies. Dancing, whirling, and diving in their mesmerising murmurations. Why starlings perform such intricate acrobatics is an unanswered question in the field of physics as much as biology. Do they dance in unison to defy the jaws of a hawk? Or do murmurations signal a roost site to other starlings? Either way, the uncertainty adds to the mystery of the spectacle. Across the marsh, pink-footed geese assemble after a long migration. Hooting and chattering away, preparing for their communal sugar beet breakfast come morning.

Pink-foots must travel to local farms for their fresh sugar beet; unfortunately it is not available at Cley Marshes’ café. There is however a lovely selection of warming soups, piping jackets and delicious cakes on offer. Work off the over-indulgence later by joining us for a post-Christmas guided walk and yoga in the New Year.

North Norfolk Residents: have your say on new ward boundaries

The independent Local Government Boundary Commission for England is asking people across North Norfolk to comment on its draft proposals for new council ward boundaries.

An eight-week public consultation on the recommendations began earlier this month and will end on 30 January 2017. The consultation is open to anyone who wants to have their say on new council wards, ward boundaries and ward names across North Norfolk. The Commission’s draft recommendations propose that the North Norfolk should have 40 councillors in the future, eight fewer than the current arrangements. The recommendations also outline how those councillors should represent 26 single-member wards and seven two-member wards across the district.

The full recommendations and detailed interactive maps are available on the Commission’s website at consultation.lgbce.org.uk and www.lgbce.org.uk. Hard copies of the Commission’s report and maps will also be available to view at council buildings and libraries. Professor Colin Mellors, Chair of the Commission, said “We are publishing proposals for a new pattern of wards across North Norfolk and we are keen to hear what local people think of the recommendations. “Over the next eight weeks, we are asking local people to tell us if they agree with the proposals or if not, how they can be improved.

“Our review aims to deliver electoral equality for local voters. This means that each councillor represents a similar number of people so that everyone’s vote in council elections is worth roughly the same regardless of where you live. “We also want to ensure that our proposals reflect the interests and identities of local communities across North Norfolk and that the pattern of wards can help the council deliver effective local government to local people. We will consider all the submissions we receive whoever they are from and whether your evidence applies to the whole district or just part of it. The Commission wants to hear as much evidence as possible in order to develop final recommendations for North Norfolk. If you would like to make a submission to the Commission, please write or email us by 30 January 2017 to The Review Officer (North Norfolk), Local Government Boundary Commission for England, 14th floor, Millbank Tower, London, SW1P 4QP or email: reviews@lgbce.org.uk

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Hopefully, by the time you read this you will be looking forward to spending Christmas with families, friends (and pets if you have them) and wondering what 2017 will bring. We would therefore like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy Christmas and a Healthy and Prosperous New Year.

As we look back over the year, we remember the challenges we have all faced and also the things we have achieved. Cats and kittens that have come into care have found lovely new homes and it is always a pleasure to learn how they have adapted to the changes in their lives. Nevertheless, we still have many waiting for that special person to come and claim them. In the meantime, we have had the pleasure of caring for them, watching the timid ones learn to trust people, the ones with health problems recover, and the kittens develop their individual characters. Although we miss them when they leave, we are happy to know that they can continue to thrive and grow in a home environment.

We have also been able to help many in our area by offering our special neutering vouchers for those people on low incomes and benefits and, during 2016, have already helped over 250 cats and kittens. When money is left to the branch we have to plan how it should be spent and we believe this is one way of making good use of any money we receive. While there is still money in this “kitty” we will continue to do so. We have also used money left to the branch to replace some of our pens, which makes life easier for our fosterers and gives the cats more space.

One of our supporters recently overheard a remark that their charity, unlike Cats Protection, spent the money they received on their cats and not on administration. Rest assured, any money that we receive is spent entirely on the cats. We are all volunteers, and none of us claim any expenses for the work that we undertake on behalf of the charity. The

01692 405301

bulk of the money we raise is spent on veterinary costs, special food for cats that have health problems and cat litter. None is wasted.

Rachel, Ant and friends and family had a very busy time at the Christmas Lights event and raised £295 from their stall. We are also happy to advise everyone who supports Sharon’s stall at High Hedges on Lyngate Road, that during the year she has raised £465 to help care for the cats. When the weather is good, she has lots of Millie Mo, nice friendly girl, 7 years young interesting items on sale, including continually changing supply of books and pet carriers at very reasonable prices. We continue to look for new ways to raise money for the cats and do welcome fresh ideas and new volunteers for this.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Or visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

Return of Stage Direct to Little Theatre

Back by popular demand, and hopefully a regular spot, Stage Direct return for another successful run at Sheringham Little Theatre from 20 to 21 January with a Frank Vickery comedy called Family Planning.

Directed by Nigel Manson, it promises to be a great success for those who like their chuckle muscles ticked. Included in the cast are also Jamie and Carol Manson , son and wife of the Director, who assures us this was not nepotism but the right folk for the job.

Acting alongside the adults, in his debut role with Stage Direct, we have 13 year old Wesley Burgoyne, who will show off his acting talents, along with his knitting prowess - surely not the last we will be seeing form this young man.

The Welsh playwright Vickery explores, in his effortless way, family relationships, with dark, mysterious and sinister twists that is very reminiscent of Alan Ayckbourn.

12

This comedy takes us into the world of the Roberts family, where hypochondriac Mr Roberts misunderstands a situation, after being misled by Gran and others, that he only has a short time left on this planet to live, although the reality is very different. Too much information at this time will spoil what is promised to be the laugh of the winter! Nigel added ‘we would like to express our gratitude to Aylsham High school for allowing us to use their drama studio for free as rehearsal space’. Tickets are available online and from The Little Theatre Box Office on 01263 822347.

Sheringham RNLI mourns a fine friend

Last month members of the Sheringham Lifeboat Management Group were among the hundred and more friends who gathered at St. Andrew’s Church, Sheringham to remember Ann Hook.

Originally from Yorkshire, Ann and her partner Andrew Dawson moved to Sheringham from the Thames Valley, brought to the coast through their shared love of sailing. This interest in boats led Ann to become involved with the RNLI.

Phil Hawes, Sheringham Lifeboat Management Group Chairman commented ‘Ann was a loyal friend and great supporter. For many years, she managed the RNLI car park at The Lees and fundraised. Through her efforts, thousands of pounds have been raised towards saving lives from drowning.

Ann was awarded an RNLI Bronze Badge for her work and an engraved glass photograph frame from the Sheringham RNLI Lifeboat Management Group. She will be sorely missed by everyone, not least for her great sense of fun. Ann’s bravery and the dignified way she carried herself through the final months of her illness won the respect of us all’.

FAIRTRADE FOR SHERINGHAM

We enjoyed an interesting time in The Lobster on 24 November, accompanied by a singing, dancing lobster.

We were promoting Fairtrade Liberation nuts - 44% of the company is owned by the farmers and workers, in Bolivia, Peru, Nicaragua, the Amazon basin, India and Malawi. Besides earning a fair wage, the workers receive a premium each year which they use to benefit their community, often for schools or to improve health.

In Africa it has been used to erect solar -powered fences to safeguard the cashews from the local endangered elephants.

People in The Lobster enjoyed the nut samples, and bought nuts and other Fairtrade products.

Thanks to Graham and his staff, who were very welcoming and helpful.

North Norfolk Railway

The North Norfolk Railway will be renewing the track in the Sheringham area from 5 – 15 January 2017.

This will include work on the weekend of 7 and 8 January. The work area will range geographically from the Church Road Bridge to just opposite the old Police Station, although the work will take place entirely on the railways’ premises. In order that the work can be done as quickly as possible, the Railway is employing an experienced contractor to undertake the task. During that time, we regret that there may be some disturbance, although we will do our best to keep the noise to a minimum. No work is planned to take place after 6.30pm or before 7am. The work on the track during the late afternoon will require temporary lighting to be installed. This will, of course, be removed on conclusion of the work.

The Railway would apologize, in advance, for any disturbance we may cause. Please rest assured that this will not become a regular occurrence - part of the track was last replaced in 1942, the remainder when the Railway first opened for business in the late 60s. Renewals of this nature take place regularly on the Railway to provide safe travel for our passengers, but as the vast majority take place in unpopulated areas, it rarely causes inconvenience. Unfortunately this work, being in a residential area, may be more obtrusive.

Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club

Our President, Arthur Bailey, recently gave a talk at The Morley Club, Sheringham to the Lions and interested members of the public.

Arthur told us about his many years driving coaches in the UK and abroad. All were fascinated and were left wanting more at the end of the evening.

On 22 November Roger Bassham, a volunteer from Prostate Cancer, talked to the Lions and the less squeamish members of the public about his cancer operation and subsequent remission.

This subject, with talk of rubber gloves and catheters, would normally frighten the bravest of men, but Roger talked candidly and it is to be hoped that he reassured the audience that, even though the subject is fairly unpleasant, nothing is painful and it is possible to completely recover in all respects, if any problems are presented to a Doctor early. A raffle and donations made £42 and Roger accepted this for the charity.

Meanwhile at Sheringham Allotments … TURNIP AND CHIPS by John Yeo

"I tell you it's the Turnips fault. Ever since he was voted in with a narrow majority, we have been forced to be openly aggressive to anything and everything. I always used to think it was the Sprouts and Runner Beans that were full of wind. This Turnip fellow has majestic plans to sort out the rest of the allotment and stick

strictly to home-grown vegetables in future. No more imports of any description will be allowed in."

The Pumpkin puffed out, as he openly flicked a large slug from attempting to gnaw into him, with a large frond attached to one of his leaves. A group of Iceberg Lettuces standing in a neat row nodded in agreement in the strong wind, their spokesman addressed the assembly "Don't blame us! We voted for the Onion - a good choice - not exactly a Spring Onion, you understand, but a super experienced Onion. An Onion that knows its Radishes from Beetroot." The Pumpkin continued "The Turnip has promised some incredibly wealthy nutrients, riches beyond our wildest dreams. The powerful fertility from the rear end of some home-grown equines. An economic miracle is on the way."

"Surely there is no way our economy can function without the cheapness and convenience of the new varieties of F1 interbreeding and Scientifically modified imports." emphatically stated a venerable Pak Choi.

"No way? Our esteemed Turnip is decidedly against all mass-produced cheap imports and proposes we will function quite successfully with our own homegrown vegetables. The new leader didn't hesitate to propose a solid wall be erected right around the allotments, preventing entrance by all alien varieties of vegetables." the Pumpkin went on.

An army of potatoes,

smartly dressed in heaped up piles of rich khaki fertilizer stood to attention, awaiting orders from their commanding officers. Always at the ready to be roasted, fried or mashed for the good of the allotment appetites.

Meanwhile, grumbles of discontent at the new order were heard among the Carrots and Swedes and several other varieties of vegetables. Particularly certain sections of the Jerusalem Artichokes and Asparagus.

There were also rumbles of discontent among certain self-seeded wildflowers whose seeds had drifted onto the allotments from neighbouring areas. Dissatisfaction was noted with certain inferences and some mysterious patterns of thought as to their place in the future plans of the allotment growth.

Threats of anarchy and revolution were brushed off by the Turnip administration.

Peace would certainly require a recount and possibly a re-seeding of the whole administration to promote new growth and eliminate oppression.

The whole assembly agreed that the well tended allotment site would continue to function successfully regardless of the Turnip at the head of the assembly during the future growing seasons.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER

MUM, DO I HAVE TO EAT BRUSSELS SPROUTS?

vegetable, for example

This is said to be the most popular whine at Christmas but why were Brussels sprouts voted the most hated vegetable in Britain? There are, in fact, many reasons why we should all eat more sprouts and they are also a very interesting

• Sprouts contain high levels of vitamins A and C, folic acid and dietary fibre, and can help protect against colon and stomach fibre. • An 80g serving of sprouts contains more vitamin C than an orange, and a cup of cooked Brussels sprouts contains only about 60 calories. • The area covered by Brussels sprouts fields in the UK is the equivalent of 3, 420 football pitches. • A team of scientist s and schoolchildren used the energy from 1000 sprouts to light a Christmas tree in London.

• In 2010, a new vegetable was created called the Flowersprout, a hybrid with kale that contained double the amount of vitamin B6 and vitamin C of an ordinary sprout. • A man once pushed a sprout to the top of Mt. Snowdon using only his nose. • A man from Sweden swallowed 31 sprouts in one minute. • The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge reportedly ate Brussels sprouts on their honeymoon in the Seychelles – the vegetable is supposed to be an aid to fertility. • Supplies are threatened this year due to the invasion of the diamond-back or cabbage moth. • Bernard Lavery of Wales grew a monster sprout that weighed in at 8.19 kg.

The freshest sprouts are green with a white base. If they are slightly yellow or brown it means they are getting old. Overcooking sprouts makes them smell like rotten eggs due to the high levels of sulforaphane they contain. Sprouts are not the easiest vegetable to grow ourselves but if you fancy a go sow the seeds in April, in a small pot and germinate under cover or outside in an open cold frame. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, prick them out into modules or into a tray of multi-purpose compost 7-8cm deep. Do not touch the stems, pick up the plants by their

leaves only. Grow the young sprouts on until they are 10-12cm tall.

Prepare the previously manured land by forking it over and then tread firmly on the soil before planting the seedlings. Make holes with a dibber or trowel, 80-90cm apart, and set out your plants so that the seed leaves are level with the soil. Water thoroughly and let the water drain away. Press the soil back around the roots very firmly.

Keep the sprouts well hoed and protected from all the usual brassica pests. If you have pigeons in your garden or allotment, netting is essential.

As it is Christmas do you know...

‘What is green and goes camping?’ – A Brussels scout

‘Which vegetable is the strongest?’ – A muscle sprout

‘Why was the Brussels sprout sent to prison?’ – Because it was a repeat offender

Finally, If you are bored over the holiday there is a paper and pencil game called ‘Sprouts’ which looks interesting, see Wikipedia for the rules. Bob Wilkinson

Lamb backs NFCA fostering proposals

In October, the Committee launched a new inquiry into fostering in England, looking at a range of issues including the adequacy of current recognition and support given to foster carers, challenges in recruitment and retention, and the stability of foster care placements for looked-after children.

In its submission to the inquiry, the Norfolk Foster Care Association (NFCA) has highlighted a range of serious concerns about the fostering system. These include, but are not limited to, inadequate support for foster carers from local authorities; frequent and unnecessary removal of children from their established foster placements; a lack of legal protections for foster carers who blow the whistle on bad practice; and a failure to ensure that allegations or complaints about foster carers are investigated fairly.

The NFCA also questioned the fairness and Sheringham Independent 454

legality of Norfolk County Council’s implementation of the ‘Staying Put’ initiative. The scheme allows young people to remain with their foster families beyond their 18th birthday, but a cap on funding in Norfolk currently discriminates against young people wishing to remain with ‘Level 5’ foster carers, who receive the highest pay rates because of their specialist knowledge and experience.

The NFCA has put forward a set of recommendations to improve the fostering system so that it better supports foster carers and the vulnerable young people who depend on them. Key recommendations include better support for foster care associations from local councils, statutory whistleblowing protections, new standards to ensure that investigations are conducted fairly, more robust processes for removing children from their foster placements, and a Central Register to overcome recruitment challenges and allow foster carers to relocate more easily to other parts of the country.

In a letter to the Education Committee chair Neil Carmichael MP, Norman Lamb, a long-time campaigner for improved rights for foster carers, endorsed the NCFA’s proposals for strengthening the system. He

Keep your small furries safe this winter Here are some helpful tips to keep your furry little ones warm this winter...

• If possible, move the hutch into the garage or shed. If not, increase the insulation around the hutch by raising the hutch from the ground, covering with a thick blanket and tarpaulin to protect it from the elements

• Ensure that the hutch has plenty of soft dry bedding such as straw and hay that your pet can get cosy in • Check that your pets water bottle doesn't freeze

• Provide food and water to last throughout the night

• Give your small furry a microwaveable heat pad to last the night, these are safer than electric heat pads

• Dental disease can be a common occurrence, particularly in rabbits and guinea pigs so if you notice a reduction in appetite please have your pets teeth checked regularly or call us on 01692 407126 for a pre-winter check-up.

What are the risks of DIY Wills?

A recent report from the Solicitors for the Elderly has focused on the risks of DIY Lasting Lesley Ward Powers of Attorneys and Wills. With the ever growing power of the internet and the constant desire to make financial savings, the amount of DIY legal forms on offer has never been greater, so what are the risks and is the potential short-term financial benefit worth not seeking professional advice?

Why is my Will important? Having a Will ensures that all of the savings and assets that make up your estate are distributed in the manner that you intend after your death. Making sure that your friends and family are provided for in whatever way you see fit. If you die before making a Will your estate will be distributed in accordance with the Intestacy Rules which can be unjust and unfair. What are the risks of a DIY Will? Many DIY Will making facilities are now offered online and by several companies allowing you to do it yourself. You can buy 'Will making kits' from high street shops or fill out online forms. The seeming benefit of this DIY method is primarily the cost. • Mistakes in drafting your Will Inaccuracies in drafting can lead to partial intestacy i.e only some of your estate goes

• Changes in circumstances Sometimes, you might not consider a change in your circumstances requires your Will to be updated, but lawyers will know.Take for example a scenario where you own an old piano which you would like your nephew to inherit the piano upon your death. You draft the Will yourself and gift the piano to him. A few years later you purchase a newer, much more expensive piano and sell the previous one you owned when you drafted the will, you don't think this is a problem as you refer to a piano in your will. Right? Wrong! Upon your death if you have not changed the Will your nephew may not receive the newer piano as that was not the piano you owned when you drafted the original will. The newer piano could fall under intestacy rules and go to someone who you never intended it to.

where you want and the rest is distributed under the intestacy rules. For example: "I leave £10,000 to my daughter" but your estate is worth £50,000 and you haven't specified where the rest should go then the £50,000 would fall under intestacy rules to dictate who receives the remainder. • Not witnessed correctly If a Will is not witnessed correctly then it can be rendered invalid, often with the error being irreparable, as the mistake is only discovered post death.

• Potential risk of being contested A DIY Will may be more susceptible to potentially being contested on grounds that at the time of making the Will you did not have the capacity to do so. A solicitor can get a doctor to provide a capacity assessment to prevent this and ensure the correct legal test of capacity is applied. The DIY drafting may well be somewhat ambiguous and thus leave the Will open to being contested by jealous family members or the like.

For most people the purpose of drafting a Will is to give peace of mind and reassurance that your wishes will be respected in the future and to relieve the stress for family and friends during emotional times. The danger with a DIY Will is that you risk not doing either, leaving them instead with a costly legal minefield.

• Complex family situations With the increase of blended families and second marriages the 'simple' Will concept is becoming less common and the complexity of a Will may well depend on the make-up of your family. For example, if you cohabitate but are not married then you will not automatically have rights to a partners estate if the Will fails to stipulate what should pass to the survivor. If you get married after making a Will then the Will can be automatically revoked unless it expressly states otherwise.

At Clapham & Collinge, we have dedicated expert solicitors who can ensure that these significant legal documents are not only correctly drafted but that you receive expert counsel on these matters. A NEW HORSE TRAILER FOR RANDY IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS

An official hand-over took place earlier this month of a newly sign-written trailer by Redwings Chief Executive Lynn Cutress to the Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service at their Bowthorpe Training Centre on Barnard Road in Norwich

Redwings Horse Sanctuary has loaned a trailer to Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service

on a permanent basis to help them transport their training horse, named ‘Randy’.

Full-size, 15 hands high, 200kg model horse Randy is an important Fire Service recruit. He is vital to the service’s work in both helping to train firefighters how to rescue horses in trouble – such as those trapped in hard to reach places like ditches and rivers –

Can You Help The Holt Friday Club OUR WONDERFUL COOKS ARE RETIRING AFTER 30 YEARS OF SERVICE We are looking for volunteer cooks or chefs to help on a Friday morning 8.30am to 1.30pm to supply a two course cooked meal at Holt Community Centre for approximately 30 elderly residents of Holt. If we can get enough interest this could be worked on a monthly rota basis. If you can help please contact Jill on 01263 711149 (Chairman) Glenys Rn 01263 710197 Secretary)

and in raising the profile of the fire service’s rescue work during demonstrations at external events.

“Randy is the only mannequin we have,” explained Operational Support Officer Jennie Schamp, “and we have a number of teams within the service, including Kings Lynn, Thetford, Carrow and Dereham, that need to train with him frequently to keep up their standards. So his regular and safe transportation across the county is incredibly important.” So when Randy’s former horse trailer fell into disrepair and was deemed no longer useable, Redwings Horse Sanctuary was able to lend a helping hoof by loaning its trailer.

“We’re delighted to support the Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service by loaning our trailer for both their animal rescue demonstrations and training, and for the safe transportation of their trusty education horse Randy,” commented Redwings Chief Executive Lynn Cutress. “The trailer is one we don’t use very often due to its size so we are pleased it will be put to good use. Indeed, we have also pledged a retirement home at the Sanctuary to Randy should he need it!’

Wimbledon lawnmowers gifted to Cromer Tennis Club

Two lawnmowers which cut the most famous grass in the tennis world will be heading to Cromer to take up their new permanent home in the new year.

Cromer Lawn Tennis & Squash Club groundsmen, Matthew Jordan and Peter Cooper, will be taking ownership of two of Wimbledon’s mowers in January to help them maintain the excellent surfaces for which the club has become well known.

The famous All England Club, which manages Wimbledon, has gifted the mowers to Cromer.

Matt, aka Jordy, who is the year round groundsman at the Norwich Road club, explained “A lot of care goes into the surface to ensure it is well maintained all year around. “People think it’s just a summer job, but that’s not the case. We put in the work all year and that’s why the Cromer club is in the top six grass courts in the country.”

dressing the surface to ensure people are playing on one of the best grass court lawns in the country.

He and Peter have continued to build on the great work of Bob Cox, who maintained the courts for 40 years before he retired in 1978, and Mike Thompson, who then took up the mantle for a further 29 years.

“When the tennis season is in full swing and a tournament is on we cut and mark every day, otherwise it’s every other day,” added Jordy. “Even out of season we keep it clipped and treat it. We have a regular maintenance Matthew Jordan and Peter programme and we spray and Cooper, groundsmen at fertilise to keep the rye grass Cromer Lawn Tennis Club surface in good condition.” will shortly be taking Nationally the focus of the ownership of two Lawn Tennis Association is Wimbledon mowers at to keep grass courts across the start of next year. the country as good as possible

With 10 grass courts to maintain, the surface comes in for a lot of wear and tear during the season, which usually runs from April to October.

champion, it’s fundamental to that,” said Jordy.

The Cromer duo was recently invited to Felixstowe Lawn Tennis Association to share their expertise in grounds maintenance and carry out their end of season renovation, a testament to their hard work and dedication.

Multiple doubles Grand Slam winner and Davis Cup champion Jamie Murray and Dan Evans, who is also a Davis Cup champion, are among many leading names to have played at Cromer.

Cllr Judy Oliver, NNDC representative on the Club committee said “The Club has a fascinating history, and has welcomed its fair share of famous players through the years from Winston Churchill’s wife through to seven times champion Dorothy Chambers and Wimbledon champion Ann Jones. My hope is that the next Wimbledon champion comes from north Norfolk.”

With the club coming up to celebrating its 110th anniversary in 2018, it is not hard to see why Cromer Lawn Tennis Club, which is supported by North Norfolk District Council, is regarded as one of the best in the country and a hidden gem on the North Norfolk coast.

After struggling with her weight for over 10 years, Sarah joined her local Sheringham Slimming world just over 18 months ago, and it has completely changed her life.

She says “Before Slimming World I was so unhappy with my weight and I didn’t believe it would ever change. I had tried lots of other diets but none of them had worked for me. I hated being so restricted and feeling like I was missing out. Slimming World was so different – the focus is on filling foods like pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meats and fish. I was never hungry, didn’t spend hours weighing out ingredients, and I could still enjoy a glass of wine or a chocolate when I wanted – it was perfect!”

“I am more confident and happier every day. It has helped with my joint aches, sleeping and my general mood. I am no longer ashamed of myself and that is absolutely liberating. I want to help as many people as I can feel the better about themselves and show them it really can change”

Her first group will be launching on the 2 January at the Lighthouse Community Church – 5.30pm and 7.30pm – do pop along if you are interested or call her on 07964 181760.
