KELLING PROBUS CLUB
Kelling Probus Club held its first meeting of 2017 at The Dales Hotel Upper Sheringham on 19 January.
There were 25 members present and, after a very enjoyable lunch, David Vickery called on Club member John Hancock to give the second part of his talk on 'Coins and Currency'.

John outlined the importance of coins in history over the last 2500 years. He covered everything from the Roman denari to the early silver penny through to our modern coins. John emphasized that to the early Anglo Saxons coins were not important except for use by the traders. The serfs were paid in food, lodging, clothes etc. As trade developed then coins became a little more important to these people too. He traced the use of currency through the Middle Ages up to today, and particularly how the British Empire, with its vast trading ability, spread coinage throughout the world.
John then talked about how currency was so important for financing warfare and communication, as many dictators from Caesar to Cromwell and later in the last two world wars, used logos and marks on currency to publicize their achievements and, of course, borrowed money to finance the wars they fought.
Ken Murray thanked John for his interesting talk and he was applauded by members.
Kelling Probus Club meets on the third Thursday of each month for lunch and a speaker. The name Kelling is a bit of a misnomer as our members come from all over North Norfolk. We always welcome new members to enjoy the friendship and fellowship of the meetings and, of course, we are out from under our wives/partners feet for three hours! Membership costs are not high - if you are interested then ring John Whittington on 01263 820333.

Rock Bodham has announced details of its 2017 event, and is now looking for bands to play at, what has become, one of north Norfolk’s biggest live music events. The charity event, which has raised in the region of £15,000 over its 5 years, will be taking place on Saturday 22 July on Bodham Playing Field, and on Sunday 23 July at Bodham’s Red Hart pub.
The event recently made its latest round of donations to local charities, donating £3150 from money raised over its 2016 events, which include the main Rock Bodham weekend, the Sheringham Battle of the Bands over carnival week, and a village fireworks display In November. A special handover ceremony was held at Bodham Red Hart where the cheques were presented to local charities.
Rock Bodham secretary Callum Ringer said “We have been really pleased to give away such a great amount to charity from 2016, this being done while keeping the event as affordable as possible to local people. We are looking to build on that this year, and are looking not only for bands to play, but for members of the community to come forward to volunteer, to help us raise as much as we can”.
Rock Bodham Chairman Darryl Biss
Bands interested in playing should send details of what they are about to bodhambigweekend@ gmail.com including a bio and any online links etc or gig dates and anyone interested in volunteering or finding out more can email or find Rock Bodham on Facebook and Twitter.

Nine Paston Sixth Form College students, a record for the College, received a very special New Year’s present when they learned that they had won places at the prestigious Oxford and Cambridge Universities for September 2017.
The nine had to demonstrate outstanding academic ability in their GCSE and AS results and in their predicted A level grades. These, together with their personal statement and College reference, got them an interview. Winning a place was down to their own performance in the highly competitive interviews. They clearly were successful in convincing interviewers of their academic credentials and potential. Being part of the College A+ and Oxbridge Programmes run by Katharine Day supported the students in their ambition to aim for the very top. The scheme has been very successful, increasing the numbers each year aiming for Oxbridge or the top Russell Group Universities. In the summer, 24% of all Paston students going on to University went on to the Russell Group. Each year, James Keeler, an ex Paston student who is the Senior Admissions Tutor at Selwyn College, Cambridge, visits
The nine students are: Paston to talk to parents and students about life at Oxbridge and how to apply and be successful. A number of ex Paston students who are currently studying at Oxford or Cambridge also return to support and mentor students. Paston students also obtain

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS SOLICITORS in in 2017? 20 17 ?
“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”
I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that Christmas can be a difffficult time for many people or resolutions are made to resolve issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offffers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.
“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 2017 to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.
Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 0 1263 8 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk 01263 823465

Salmon en papillote (in a paper bag)
We’ve finally come out of our winter hibernation and, complete with a lick of paint and various other refurbishments, re-opened for business at the end of January. Our first big occasion was Burn’s Night, complete with authentic Scottish piper, who was excellent but rather loud. The new sea defences on the seafront took quite a battering from the decibel count and the windows shook as he strode majestically though the hallways. It brought to mind the old Scottish saying that a gentleman

is someone who plays the bagpipes… and doesn’t. It also becomes clear why bagpipes are mainly heard in the still of dawn beside an empty loch; we surmise it’s because the piper’s wife has told him to get as far away from her as possible. Joking aside Peter was absolutely superb, and the evening was a great success.

What does a solicitor do? By Miranda Marshall - Director, Hayes + Storr
This article follows on from my last article on how to become a lawyer. The next step is to explain the work that a solicitor does.
A solicitor is a confidential legal adviser who combines legal expertise and people-skills to provide expert legal advice and assistance in range of situations.
Our work covers the following:
Everyday matters for private clients, such as buying and selling a house, making a Will and winding up people’s affairs when they have died. It also covers advice when relationships break-down and other family matters. Helping with the legal side of business and its transactions.
Protecting people, by advising them on their rights and making sure that they are treated fairly. This includes bringing and enforcing claims through the Courts and tribunals.
Of the 130,000 solicitors in England and Wales, two-thirds work in private practice. Scotland has its own legal system. They range from sole practitioners (who work on their own with support staff) through to multi-national firms with hundreds of partners, thousands of staff and offices across the world.
Some solicitors work with individual people; including representing them in the Courts and tribunals. Or, they might work advising businesses and corporate clients in areas ranging from employment law to contracts, through to company mergers and acquisitions. In counties such as Norfolk, there are thriving practices specialising in advising farmers on all aspects of agricultural legal matters.
Other work is in specialist areas: insurance, intellectual property (“I.P.”) i.e. advising on patents and copyrights, shipping, banking, the media and entertainment.
The remaining third of solicitors work ‘in house’ in commerce and
industry, local and central government, the Courts, the Armed Forces and Charities.
Solicitors are employed at all levels of seniority. A solicitor in private practice may well become a partner, i.e. a proprietor who owns a share in and runs their own business. This means that they take a share in profits but also take the risk of market-forces and fluctuating success, just like any other business.
Solicitors work across all of England and Wales and there are firms in every town. Conversely, work in overseas offices brings the opportunity to travel and would involve advising clients abroad on English, EU or foreign law.
The law, as a career, is hugely varied and offers chances for those with wide-ranging interests, skills and ambitions. It stretches geographically from major-conurbations to country practices, from litigious court work through to non-contentious advisory and transactional work. It is as varied as the wealth and diversity of the people and businesses it advises.
This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice.
If you require advice on this matter please contact Miranda on 01328 710210. If you require advice on any other legal matter please telephone our North Walsham office on 01692 503081 or email law@hayes-storr.com.

More full days of children’s activities offered by North Norfolk District Council during half term Kids’ Zone : jump, run and play all day - February half term sporting timetable altered to help families
The regular school holiday programme of sporting activities for children run by North Norfolk District Council has been given a fresh look for February half term.
A new focus on full days of activities running from 9.30am to 3pm has been adopted after feedback from parents, instead of a mix of mainly shorter sessions and an occasional full day.
The same feedback has also led to the sports teams offering early drop off and late pick up, meaning the day can be extended to 8am to 4.30pm.
The full days are priced at £10, plus £2 for each of the extended 90 minutes at either end of the day.
Full days will be held at Cromer, North Walsham and Stalham community sports centres, with one half day at Stalham. Activities include ball games, football fun day, multisports and street dance. The days will serve different age groups ranging from four to 12 years old.
Full details of locations, dates, times and costs can be found at www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/sports/docs/Sports-and-winter-17.pdf Cllr Maggie Prior, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Health and Wellbeing, said “We have listened to the views of both parents and young people, and used that information to change what we offer in our sports centres during half term and holidays.
“There was a clear desire for longer sessions to help busy families and we’re delighted to be able to tie that in with offering healthy, active fun at a very reasonable cost.
“All sessions are led by qualified and dedicated staff who know how to make sure young people of various ages have lots of active fun.”

Coastal Community Funding Boost for Sheringham and Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk Blakeney Welcomed
Two bids supported by North Norfolk District Council to fund ‘Coastal Community Teams’ have been given the green light by Government.
The successful bids for Sheringham and Blakeney Channel will receive £10,000 each from Government and become part of a nationwide network of Coastal Community Teams.
The announcement brings the total number of Coastal Community Teams to four in North Norfolk. Back in 2015 CCT funding was approved for Wells-next-the-Sea and the ‘Deep History Coast’ (Weybourne to Cart Gap – centred on Cromer). The bid for Blakeney is a consortium of local organisations primarily concerned with addressing the navigation of the Channel. The Sheringham bid is for a wide range of community organisations to work together to develop innovative ways of maintaining the vitality of the town centre.
In Sheringham, the money for the Coastal Community Team will be used to develop ideas to help keep the town centre and the seafront vibrant and attractive, for example by exploring options for improving lighting on the promenade and possible measures to better accommodate pedestrians in the town centre.
The Sheringham Coastal Community Team will involve Sheringham Town Council,
01692 405301
Sheringham Chamber of Trade and Commerce and Norfolk County Council.
In Blakeney the grant will be used to develop a plan for the management of the marine waters inland of Blakeney Point. The first stage of the project will be to develop an Economic Plan, which has to be submitted to the Department by 31 March.
District Council said “Sheringham and Blakeney are great locations. North Norfolk has fantastic towns and coastline and has such a lot to offer residents and tourists alike.
“These grants will help Sheringham and Blakeney to develop new projects and schemes which will benefit the economy of the area.”
The Blakeney team is keen to involve stakeholders and other interested parties of the local community in this project. The Team membership and structure is currently being developed, with an initial public meeting planned for 21 February in order to communicate the objectives of the project and to invite comments and volunteers.
The Team plans to communicate further details of this project once the membership of the Team has been formed and following feedback from the community.
The Coastal Community Team initiative is to provide a catalyst for local people to get together to address the needs of their areas and help improve local economic prospects. North Norfolk District Council is happy to support these new teams, to provide help and advice and further assistance in applying for further funding to help put the ideas into action.

New for 2017 - Norfolk Artisan Fair
Norfolk Artisan Fair is set to launch on Easter Sunday 2017.
The co-ordinator, Glyn, ran the predecessor Weybourne Meet the Producers Market and said: “the fair will host up to 40 artisans from across Norfolk displaying their handmade crafts and foods to up to 3000 holidaymakers plus local visitors at Kelling Heath Holiday Park, with extended opening hours from 10-4. 2016 was a record season for tourism in North Norfolk and this year is forecast to be even better – Kelling Heath has been supportive to small artisan businesses over the years with its sustainable-sourcing and hosting of our events. When the management were kind enough welcome us back this season, we were very keen
to accept. There is so much to do in the heart of the park, our fairs offer a great day out for all the family”.

North Norfolk District Council calls for groups to join in the Great British Spring Clean
North Norfolk District Council is backing a campaign to get half a million people out and about across Britain cleaning up their local communities in March 2017.
The brand new Great British Spring Clean will roll out for the first time in 2017, with a view to it becoming an annual event helping to bring people together and clean up the country.
NNDC will be encouraging and supporting groups that want to help clear up litter that blights the streets, parks and beaches in our district.
Crayford and Abbs Ltd
Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett Cabinet Member for Environmental Services said “We have been working hard with our communities to keep our beaches, villages and towns clean and tidy. The Great British Spring Clean is a chance to keep up the great work and encourage more people to take part in making North Norfolk an even better place to live.”
Many other organisations will also be supporting the clean up 3-5 March, including the Women’s Institute, National Trust and RSPCA, as well as a range of businesses.
TV wildlife presenter and children’s favourite Steve Backshall is lending his support to the campaign, which is backed by anti-litter charities including Keep Britain Tidy, Keep Wales Tidy, Keep Scotland Beautiful, Marine Conservation Society and Surfers Against Sewage.
If you want to take part in the campaign or to set up your own event, contact North Norfolk District Council’s Environmental Team at cleansing@north-norfolk.gov.uk or 01263 516195.

CHRISTMAS IN SHERINGHAM Our 2016 Christmas Dinner at St. Andrew's Methodist Church saw 50+ diners sitting down to a two course meal on Christmas Day.
This year we also delivered more meals to housebound people in their home than in previous years.
But, the meal would not be able to take place without the volunteers who come in Christmas Eve to prep the veg and lay tables, and come again on Christmas Day to greet and serve our guests and clear up!
Also the drivers who picked up and took home all who wanted a lift. The committee thanks each and every one of you.
This year we are looking for a new committee so if a ‘different’ 2017 Christmas appeals to you, please contact me for details. Connie Burchett 01263 837647
Sheringham Shoal helps About with Friends become ‘green'
A small group of supporters, trustees and members of the Cromer-based organisation, About with Friends, gathered with representatives of the Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm at its operational base on 24 January, to witness the ‘Grand Switch On' of a new lighting system. One of our diners had walked from Cromer - and planned to walk home! One of our young helpers entertained everyone with her playing of the violin and everyone joined in the quiz she had planned, as they enjoyed their coffee and mince pies before they departed for home.
As in previous years, this meal is free to our guests although many do give a donation towards the cost.
The meal is able to be free because Hastings the green grocer and fruiterers, D&M Butchers & Tesco's, all in Sheringham, donate food and a lady makes and gives 100 mince pies. Also Waitrose in North Walsham, The Classic Car Club and the Charity ”Sheringham Social Services League” give us cash. St Andrews also allow us use of their kitchen and full facilties free.

Ross McMillan (far right) addresses guests of About with Friends at the Grand Switch On
The replacement of old fluorescent tubing with modern, long-lasting LED tubes was made possible by a £5,000 grant from the Sheringham Shoal Community Fund.
Responding to thanks from Helen Dalton-Hare, founder and CEO of About with Friends, Ross McMillan, Head of Operations at Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm said "The company set up its Community Fund in 2010 to help North Norfolk community groups finance projects that focus on renewable energy, marine environment and safety, sustainability or education in these areas. The About with Friends project to install LED lighting fell neatly within these parameters, and the Fund panel was very pleased to be able to play a part in the successful changeover."
The speeches were followed by canapés served by members of ‘About with Friends'.

Take your Cue to Support Seaside Theatre
It takes more than acting and creative talent to keep a community theatre in the spotlight – it also requires funding.
And Sheringham Little Theatre is appealing for more business sponsors to support its work staging of the performing arts.
The venue generates income from a widening programme of events – from drama and music to cinema and live arts screenings – as well as its popular Hub coffee bar. But it also relies on support from the community it serves, including businesses, groups and individuals.
The Little Theatre is stepping up its drive to find more sponsors – including seeking its first ever “gold” backer.
Sponsorship can be for a full year with packages ranging from bronze (£695 a year plus VAT), through silver (£1250) to gold (£4950). But it can also include individual events or seasons, such as summer drama and pantomime, with backers gaining publicity through programme and in-venue advertising.
During the recent pantomime season, sponsors dropped in to meet the cast during rehearsals and after shows. And they spoke of how backing the popular theatre also provided the businesses with a stage for entertaining and
informing existing and potential clients. Mark Loveday from financial planners Loveday and Partners said “I enjoy being involved with Sheringham Little Theatre because of the wonderful work they do in the community. The quality of the performances combined with the passion and enthusiasm of all the support cast makes this a real gem in our society. Playing a small role in the ongoing success of the theatre is truly a pleasure for our firm.”
Solicitors Clapham and Collinge have used the venue for a breakfast seminar advising businesses and individuals how to avoid common legal pitfalls which can ruin commercial and family lives.
Marketing manager Louis Hilldrup-Boorman said “The award-winning theatre, which is down the road from our office, offers year-round entertainment for all the family is incredibly important to our community. We are proud sponsors of our neighbours.”
The Hub coffee bar also provides a friendly meeting space which Clapham and Collinge regularly uses for client meetings and legal seminars.
Theatre trustee Peter Davies, who deals with sponsorship, said "Sponsorship is absolutely key to the long-term sustainability of the theatre and we are so grateful for the support of backers who enable us to continue to offer a wide variety of both professional

The choir rehearses in Reepham for two hours each Wednesday evening and performs about four concerts a year. The Choir’s repertoire is broad and varied, from ‘Bach to Broadway’. The choir has the services of a professional accompanist. The role is remunerated for time and expenses, plus the prospect of an annual bonus based on the financial outcome of the year.

and amateur productions.”
Other sponsors are Dardan Security, Breakwater IT, Swains PLC, Paston Sixth Form College, Lawrences Garages, Loveday and Partners, M+A Partners, Sharps, EBS, Beeston Regis Holiday Park, and Norfolk Country Cottages.
Theatre director Debbie Thompson said sponsorship was vital in keeping the theatre running, even more so during a time of grant cutbacks.
“We are so grateful for the monetary support given by our sponsors, but in return our venue provides them with an ideal fully equipped venue where they can entertain clients, or stage corporate events.”

01263 710138 Green Hearts for Climate Change - Share the Love
During February, as part of a nationwide campaign, WI members across England and Wales will be showing the love for everything we could lose to climate change. The WI has played a key role in keeping the issue of climate change high on the political agenda.
Nina’s Wine Bar and Bistro first opened for business on November 1st 2015, and after a 10 month refurbishment period is open to the public once again. From 2004 the venue was known as Balthazar’s and now has been transformed into brand new Bar.
Nina herself has lived in Norfolk since 1979 and has a professional background in acting and catering. She worked for Byfords for a period. She now brings 14 years of Wine Bar experience to her current work at her latest venue.
Nina’s philosophy for the Bar is a friendly and informal atmosphere, with frequent diverse events that bring something for everyone. The bar is also Dog friendly!
Events include: Quiz Nights, Rock & Roll Bingo Nights, and once-a-month Friday Supper Nights. Music enthusiasts can expect Jazz, Country and Blues music evenings. One such evening—the Jazz Duo Phil Brooke and John Clark at the Dine with Music evening on Valentines Day—is drawing nearer and ready for bookings.

North Norfolk Photographic Society
John Wilcox came from Wisbech to judge North Norfolk Photographic Society’s competition on 18 January, despite being in the course of recovery from leg surgery. John holds the LRPS distinction and is also a member of the eminent Cambridge Camera Club.
The contest as usual was in two parts - for Novice and for Advanced members. John Wilcox said afterwards that he thought the overall standard was very high.
The Novice section was won by Grace Glaister with a photograph of a tangle of tree roots with the sun just peeping through from behind. There were two second places, Barrie Price with a clever shot of two planes at Cromer Carnival in close formation and Tony Shipp with one of Jarrolds store in Norwich at night with the Christmas lights.
The award for the best Advanced member’s entry went to Paul Richards who caught a Red Kite flying in a snowstorm. Second place went to John Cucksey’s picture of four Hippopotamuses up to their eyes in swirling water.

St Andrew's Ladies Association
Our 24 January meeting welcomed our good friend Maggie Roffe to tell us about Julian of Norwich who lived in the 14th Century in Norwich as an English Anchoress, a Christian mystic.
She actually lived in the Julian Church and she was the first English woman to write and publish a book in the 14th century.
We know so little about her but believe she was 30 years old when she came to live in the cell attached to the Church. Her book was entitled ‘Revelations of Divine Love’ and it is known all over the world. Her writings gave hope and trust in God's goodness. At that time Norwich had many plagues and there were so many poor and sick people and it is believed that Julian of Norwich would give counsel to the many people who came to her little window - advice, prayer and hope.
Maggie gave us such an interesting evening and this subject is very close to her heart
14 February - Valentines Night which will be arranged by Eleanor and Dot and promises to be a really fun and entertaining evening 7.30pm - don't miss it.
21 February - Committee Meeting 7.30pm
28 February - Our President, Rev Jackie Smith and her friend will tell us all about their recent trip to Israel. 7.30pm
ADVANCE NOTICE - 28 March WE HAVE ANOTHER BRILLIANT FASHION SHOW FROM M & CO IN CROMER. Put the date in your diary, details to follow. This will be an Open evening so do bring your family, friends and neighbours.
Our Meetings commence at 7.30pm and visitors are very welcome to join us.

Safe and effective Laser Hair Removal for all skin types Why it is a great idea to see us.
When it comes to laser hair and tattoo removal it is the wild west in this country. There is no shortage of new places opening up at every corner. We are seeing increasing number of patients who are either dissatisfied or have been harmed because of poorly trained and unregulated providers and cheap copycat or downright dangerous and unapproved machines.
As we all know one size does not fit all. There is simply no machine which is suitable for every person's needs. With this in mind we have invested heavily in modern high-end medical machines that have undergone rigorous testing and evaluation. All our therapists also undergo rigorous initial and on going training in laser safety.
We have helped thousands of patients remove unwanted hair, ingrowing hair and rashes, pseudofolliculitis barbae (razor bumps) and even helped patients with poly-cystic ovaries.
Thanks to our proven gold-standard lasers and extensive experience we are able to treat every skin type- from very fair to dark skin patients. Nd-Yag laser is great for treating Asian and Afro-Caribbean patients.
Caucasian patients are generally treated with Alexandrite laser or IPL machine made by worlds leading medical laser companyLumenis corporation.
Sometimes additional lasers are required so we also have a selection of diode lasers. In general though we prefer our three "big-boys" as pictured.
So if you have wanted safe and effective Laser Hair Removal at an affordable price-come and see us. It simply is not worth taking chances and trying anything other than a reputable clinic with lots of experience and FDA approved medical lasers.

Council calls on ‘Absent Voters’ to refresh their signatures - Keep your right to a vote -
More than 2,500 people defined as ‘long-term absent voters’ will receive letters from North Norfolk District Council asking them to return a form showing their fresh signature.
The letters have been sent out to postal voters and anyone who has a postal proxy vote, whose signatures have been held for more than five years and not updated in that time. Anyone in this category who wants to remain an ‘absent voter’ will need to send in a new signature.

Returning the completed form by 2 March will ensure absent voters remain eligible to vote by post in future elections. If the deadline of 2 March is missed, their right to an absent vote will be removed and they will be required to complete a new absent voter application form if they wish to vote by post in the future.
Anyone with concerns about the process should contact Electoral Services at register@north-norfolk.gov.uk or by telephone on 01263 516046.

And for the trio staging The Sentence Snatchers, their visit to the Sheringham Little Theatre is a ‘homecoming’ to the county where they met.
Director Gwen Hanauer and cast members Jonathan Cobb and Sophie McKenzie formed Flat Pack Productions in 2013 while studying English and drama at the UEA.
The play follows a determined young girl called Frank who has a terrible fear of speaking. But when a mysterious figure offers her a deal to take those nerves away, everything changes.

Trapped in a ‘contract’ where even the clauses have claws and the Syn-Tax is far too expensive, she must go on a big adventure, across lexical fields and letter seas, to defeat her fear and take back her voice from the sneaky Sentence Snatchers.
The imagination exploding family fun performance for six to 12 year olds but which can also be enjoyed by adults, is jam packed with puppets, music and magical storytelling.
The show was nominated for the International Youth Arts Festival’s Best Family Show award in Brighton, where it premiered last year, and is in now on tour in Norfolk and Suffolk, supported by Creative Arts East.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
We have mentioned the actions people need to take when they see a stray cat in their garden to ensure they are not stealing someone’s beloved companion. However, after taking appropriate action, there are some that are indeed strays and need to come into care. It may be that we cannot take them into care straight away because all our pens are full so we will ask the person who has contacted us to ensure the cat is fed and has shelter until we are in a position to do so.

Because we do not have any background information on the cat once we have space to take it in, we will get our vets to blood test for FIV and FELV. If this provides a positive result, further investigations are made at specialist centres to confirm the diagnosis. Fortunately, the result from these will often come back negative. However, if the result is positive, we can only rehome cats with FIV to indoor homes, either by themselves, or with other FIV cats. Unfortunately, if the cat is FELV positive, it will need to be put to sleep, something we have rarely needed to do. Last year 3 cats tested positive Harvey, our lovely FIV for FIV but none for FELV.
boy
Two of the cats, both ginger boys, quickly found new homes with people who wanted indoor cats because they lived on busy roads. Garfie, the second of these to arrive, came into care with other cats. When his blood tests indicated he was FIV positive, the other cats were also tested but their tests proved negative.
Herard, the last to arrive, was a stray and would have been offered a home by the people who handed him in but they were unable to do this because they had cats already. He too was with us for a very short time. Harvey, who arrived first, was also a stray, and in very bad condition when he arrived. Here again he would have had a home with the people handing him in if they had not already had two cats. Although it took a few weeks for him to recover, today he is a picture of health and we now have to watch his weight as he loves his food. If he sees you with a dish of food in your hands he will jump up and down on his back legs with excitement. Harvey is a little older than the other two but a great favourite with everyone who comes to Dilham. We would all dearly love to see him settled.
Although not a stray, Leo another cat who came into care recently, needed an operation as his eyelashes were ingrown and causing serious discomfort. He has now had “cosmetic surgery” to rectify the situation and should get a clean bill of health from his vet next week. He will then be available for re-homing. Leo is a lovely friendly cat, finally receiving the treatment he needed, who is appreciating the attention and loving care he is having and is another favourite with us all. If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please call Stephanie on 01692 535858. Alternatively, visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

A fishy encounter at Toll Barn Vets!
You could be mistaken for thinking that the life of a goldfish is not a particularly exciting affair and usually doesn’t involve venturing outside of their aquarium or pond. However, we would like you to meet Bob!
Goldfish are known to live to over 25 years old when properly cared for and Bob is at the ripe age of 20 years old.
He was brought in to see the Toll Barn Vets team when his owner noticed a large lump growing on his fin. Examination confirmed this lump was unfortunately a tumour. We believe that all pets should have the highest possible standards of care
regardless of their age and species so we acted swiftly to operate and remove the lump. Bob was anaesthetised by gradually adding a powder based anaesthetic agent to a small amount of his normal water whilst monitoring his depth of anaesthesia. Once he was anaesthetised he was removed from the water and placed on a waterproof drape. Our nursing team sprung into action using a Doppler to monitor Bob’s heart rate and therefore depth of anaesthetic and a catheter placed into Bob’s mouth to allow administration of carefully titrated doses of anaesthetic water in order to keep him safely anaesthetised.
His scales were kept moist throughout as drying out damages the mucus layer that covers the scales and risks post operative complications. Using microsurgical equipment we successfully removed the tumour whilst avoiding any damage to the fin in order to make sure Bob was still able to swim properly. Bob recovered very well and is now back home recovering from his fishy adventure! At Toll Barn Vets we really do care for ALL your pets! Faye Bethell, BVetMed, PgC & CertGP (ExAP) MRCVS

On the Up?
by Joel Lodge, our Football Correspondent
Too many times this season Norwich have given fans a sense of false hope by winning in around three games however things seem to be on the up although that is something I have felt many a time this season.
If city can mount the same kind of promotion charge we did back in 2015 then there could be hope for us making the playoffs however the automatics seem like a pipe dream with Newcastle and Brighton steadily distancing themselves from the pack of teams behind them.
Norwich seem to be taking steps in the right direction though, with two wins in the last two games against Wolves (3-1) and Birmingham (2-0) respectively, have pushed Norwich up the table. By no stretch of the imagination does this mean that good form is guaranteed as the Championship is amongst the toughest and most unpredictable leagues in the world, Alex Neil has also managed to keep his jib after losing to bottom table Rotherham proving that the board are hesitant to change manager at this point in the season and by now, its too late anyway and if some of Norwich’s key players
Woodlands NEW BOWLERS Indoor Bowls Club WANTED
can regain form coupled with replacements for Martin Olsson who’s left for Swansea and Brady who appears to be off to Burnley then Norwich should be able to make the play offs this season.
As for replacements for Brady and Olsson, at the time of writing this (January 30th) it appears that Ajax full back Mitchell Dijks could join on loan and Yanic Wildschut from Wigan who is a left winger.
