Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club - Local Club Moves
Club President Roger Hill and Club President Elect, his brother Alan Hill, took on the task of moving the Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club’s emblem to their new venue.
The Club has newly relocated to the Sea Marge Hotel for its fortnightly meetings. This elegant hundred-year-old hotel set on the cliff top at Overstrand has been welcoming, with a warming fire in the Minstrel Gallery before Club members move to the dining room for their fortnightly meeting.
When Rotary was formed in February 1905, it was simply a time for business men to socialise in their lunchtime, rotating between different venues – hence the name Rotary. Since that time Rotary has welcomed both genders and greatly extended its welcome to all sorts of members. To begin with Rotarians would occasionally volunteer either to give some personal service or raise funds for their community, but like ‘Topsy’ it got bigger and bigger to the cost of fellowship and friendship.

Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club - Local Club Moves
Continued from front cover... On the premise that “all work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy” today the members of this club are taking a positive step back to grass roots. There are a few adjustments, such as the frequency of meetings (now is twice a month), ensuring the regular nurturing of fun, fellowship and friendship. In between time the Club has been known to lend support to causes such as the Youth Football, Scouts, Air Ambu-
lance and Special Care Refuges, while Rotary worldwide, together with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, are the main promoters for the eradication of Polio. This project has cost many millions but Rotary considers it to be a very worthwhile cause.
If you would like to join Rotary for the fellowship of the meetings, to help with the running of the club because you have a special skill or because you’re keen to help with
fund-raisers, Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club would love to hear from you. Be their guest at a first meeting with the club; ring 01263 513757 (Roger Hill) or 01263 578194 (Tony Nash).
Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club meets on the first and third Wednesday of each month at 6pm for 6.30pm at Sea Marge, High Street, Overstrand NR270AB.
North Norfolk Photographic Society
It is perhaps a little unfair that some people seem to have so many talents. Dr Kevin Elsby filled in at short notice to talk to North Norfolk Photographic Society on 1 March. He took a cruise to Iceland not long ago and was able to take more of his brilliant wild bird photographs, many of which he showed to members. Kevin also showed pictures of the unique landscape of Iceland - its volcanoes, lava fields, islands and sea cliffs. People and habitations are few and far between. Iceland is a wonderland for the keen birder - such as Kevin Elsby! Technically part of Europe, it also attracts some birds from North America. And when the keen birder is also a wonderful photographer, the recipe for a superb show is complete. Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are normally held on the first and third Wednesday each month at Holt Community Centre.

Bessie’s Story – RESCUE WOODEN BOATS
The whelk boat “Bessie” was built by Johnsons at Sheringham in 1935 for G.H.Cox and Sons who were fishermen based at Wells-next-the-sea. She is 26ft long and 10ft broad, built to the traditional double-ended design that was prevalent along the North Norfolk coast, made of larch and oak with an inboard engine with an auxiliary lugsail. She was named after George Henry Cox’s wife, Bessie and was used in the fishing industry for many years, as a busy whelk boat. Later, when the Cox family acquired three Liverpool-type ex-lifeboats she was retained as a reserve vessel. She was well regarded by the family and considered a fine sea boat.
Ovenclean will transform your oven and put the sparkle back into your kitchen! ●
In 1940, Bessie was taken to Ramsgate to help in Operation Dynamo to help evacuate the British Expedionary Forces from Dunkirk. She was, however, chosen for a special sub-mission. She crossed the English Channel and had to lay off the French coast in a vulnerable position. When Michael Graham applied for the 1939-45 STAR medal he named the following people who took part in the Operation alongside him under Captain Selby as: T. Neilson, W R. Cox, W. Long, H. Albrow, R. Pegg, J. Bishop, J. Barnes and C. Warton Later Bessie was sold to ‘Squeakie’ Bishop of Blakeney who used her there for commercial pleasure trips. Later still, she worked out of Gorleston in the same job and was finally acquired by the Charity, Rescue Wooden Boats from Trevor Farman in late 2011. She has since had the wheelhouse removed and some major repairs to her stem post completed but is presently in urgent need of a major overhaul to return her to pristine condition. (Research by Geraldine Green)
We have just - in 2017 - started fund-raising to restore Bessie. She is in dire need, especially after Storm Doris recently necessitated her being hauled out of the water at Morston. Do join our friendly team at Stiffkey in the Maritime Heritage Centre (NR23 1QF) – we open for the new season on Saturday 8 April, 11am to 3pm, weekends and Bank Holidays – • as a visitor, to see our display of stories, artefacts and films • as a volunteer, welcoming visitors to the Centre (we work in pairs, no experience necessary, just a friendly face!) • as a volunteer in the boatsheds, working alongside other enthusiasts, restoring boats back to a life afloat for the enjoyment and education of all We have a stand at Burnham Deepdale Hygge Fair on Saturday 25 March, plus various other Events, including Langham Dome’s 1940s event in June, are also involved in the Lifeboat Festival in Wells at the end of July, and have a stall at Burnham Market Craft Fair in August. There is a small shop at the MHC in Stiffkey, selling merchandise including calendars and Tide Tables, sweatshirts and mugs, woolly hats and books. In the last issue’s feature on Holt Then and Now we got the captions on the photos the wrong way round apologies to Steve and Anthony
Anthony Burn
Sheringham & District Pensioners Group NPC is a new group which meets quarterly at The Lighthouse in Sheringham.
We are affiliated to the National Pensioners Convention (NPC) which is a national organisation campaigning on issues of concern to pensioners.
On Dignity Action Day at the beginning of February, we gave out pamphlets in the Norwich and Norfolk area on the very hot topic of better Social Care. It should be properly funded through taxation and carers should be adequately trained and paid a decent wage. We need a National Health and Social Care Service (NHSCS) funded through taxation. What we campaign for today will benefit future generations. Sheringham Independent 460

Ham Hock Terrine
Our homemade ham hock terrine is an old favourite that regularly appears on the evening menus and is a traditional dish that is simple but satisfying. It is one of our head chef, Matt Staceys’, favourite starters as it is a classic rustic dish which is best served with just some crusty bread and some piccalilli. Matt has always said that some of the best dishes are the simplest.
3 x ham hocks 6x bay leaves 1x onion (chopped) 2 x carrots ( peeled) 6x whole garlic clove
6x black peppercorns 50g mixed herbs 20g x flat leaf parsley 20ml grain mustard vinaigrette
1. Take a large saucepan and fill with the ham hocks, bay leaves, onion, carrots, peppercorns and garlic. Cover with water and bring to the boil. Once the water is boiling reduce to a simmer and leave to cook all day for roughly 5 hours. 2. After about 5 hours, when the meat is falling off the bone, Strain the pan off in a colander. When the ham is cool enough to handle, pick out the ham and pick off the bone. 3. Place the cooked ham in a mixing bowl and add the parsley, herbs and vinaigrette. Mix this all together with your hands. Set aside a baking tin lined with cling film and put the ham hock mixture in and press down firmly

All change on the Bittern Line
It’s “all change” on the Bittern Line, one of the great successes of North Norfolk.
At a very well attended AGM of the Bittern Line Community Rail Partnership, held at Paston Sixth Form College in North Walsham, on 28 February, Ted Gadsden formally retired after 10 years as chair. Jonathan Jonathan Denby presents a Denby, head of corporate affairs at retirement gift to Ted Gadsden, Greater Anglia, and Ian Dinmore, out-going chair of the Bittern chair of Community Rail Norfolk, Line CRP were present to mark the occasion.

Jonathan thanked Mr Gadsden for “his constant and unwavering support for the Bittern Line CRP over the last decade.” The CRP was created in 1997 and over those 20 years passenger journeys have tripled. “This is down to the commitment of many people who have played their part, in the CRP and more widely. One of the key players in the last 10 years has been Ted. He’s been a tireless supporter and advocate for line.”
Ted was presented with a gift voucher by Mr Denby, on behalf of the Partnership, for him and his wife Sheila to enjoy a day out on one of NENTA’s excursion trains.
Mr Gadsden intends to continue his involvement as a “community railer” supporting the Bittern Line, as Vice President, and Community Rail Norfolk, the body which oversees this work on the lines from Norwich to Sheringham, Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft.
Ted is succeeded as chair of the BLP by Peter Mayne, who is active in community rail as a director of Community Rail Norfolk. In 2011 he was instrumental in the Bittern Line winning the prestigious “Passengers Matter" award made by the national rail body, ACORP. He retired in 2012 as principal of Paston Sixth Form College, although he continues to support improvement in schools nationally, doing so - you’ve guessed it - by rail as his preferred mode of travel.
Peter looks forward to an exciting period ahead for the Bittern Line, not least with the arrival of brand new trains in 2019/20. A fleet of state-of-the-art three and four carriage trains, no less!

Spring Events at NWT Cley Marshes Microsculpture Exhibition
Saturday 1 April – Tuesday 2 May Microsculpture is a ground breaking project by Levon Biss that presents insect specimens from the Oxford University Museum of Natural History like never before.
These images reveal an unexpected and often breathtaking beauty and make visible the many intricate adaptations to the form of insects – what entomologists call their microsculpture.
This series of beautifully-lit, high magnification portraits captures the microscopic form of insects in striking high-resolution detail. Displayed as large scale photographic prints up to 3m high, the Microsculpture project provides the viewer with a unique opportunity to study and appreciate this hidden world. We will also be hosting a launch evening & talk on Friday 31 March, doors at 6.45pm tickets £12 please call 01263 740008 to book. This exhibition has been kindly sponsored by Swarovski Optik.

Jonathan Dodd, Musical Director of North Norfolk Chorale, said “the Messiah is so popular it needs no introduction from me. We shall be performing a selection of movements that give a good flavour of the work. And of course it will include the Hallelujah Chorus! Do come – everyone is most welcome”.
St Andrew's Ladies Association
At our meeting on Tuesday 28 February we were so pleased to welcome our President, Rev Jackie Smith and her friend Margaret, who had recently been on a five day holiday to the Holy Land and showed us slides and talked about their visit .
Their holiday was arranged by the Council of Christians and Jews which was founded in 1942 and its aim is to form a bridge building between Jews and Christians. It was quite awe inspiring for those of us who have never travelled that far and it certainly made the Bible come to life with all the places they visited.
The first day was spent at Caesarea and every-
where they went there were massive amounts of archaeology projects taking place. From there they visited many places mentioned in the Bible, Caperrnaum, the Garden of Gethesmane, the Church overlooking the Sea of Galilee, Nazareth and the Church of the Annunciation and Jerusalem where they were invited to a Shabbat Meal. To have walked in the footsteps of Jesus wherever they travelled must have been an incredible and humbling experience and something which one would always remember.
Their tour ended with a visit to the glass memorial to all the victims of the Holocaust the greatest destruction of life - where one and a half Jewish children died, where the light
never goes out and the names are read out quietly continually.

Thorpe Market Church Local History Project
In 2001, a local history evening attracted a full church and lots of interest. Since then further pictures have been added to our collection. It is hoped that enough material can be amassed for a power-point presentation using the church’s new cinema screen, maybe in the autumn. If anyone has Thorpe Market connections and access to family

pictures we would be thrilled to make contact. Nowadays there is no need to be separated from precious photographs, they can be copied in their owners’ homes.
Our photos are from Anthony Beck’s Green Farm archive and are just the sort of anecdotal village history that we are seeking. Of course Thorpe Market was a ‘Suffield’ village, with many people employed on the Gunton
estate. Photographic material from that era, to add to that which we already hold, would be most welcome.
Memories of the Methodist Chapel, Post Office, The Dairy, 1947 winter, Sunday School, Coronation, WW2 all make fascinating stories to be shared.
Please contact us if you can add to our knowledge, or point us to someone who can. info@thorpemarket.org.uk

Songbird Survival Supporter Mina
Songbird Survival funds research into the dramatic decline in songbird numbers. Supporter Eddie Bullimore blames the decline on modern farming methods including the use of chemicals, not leaving margins around fields and the severe cutting back of hedgerows with mechanical cutters, along with the rising number of predators.
Eddie and his friend Lynn Frarey are always grateful for the support given to them through donations of cash and items for their various fundraising table top sales by members of the public, but were particularly pleased recently to learn of a very young supporter. Six year old Mina Fawkes has been putting her pocket money into a Songbird Survival charity box in Cromer and Eddie is delighted about Mina’s interest in the songbirds and their future. Well done Mina!
Norfolk Landscape Gardeners Get Grubby
By Beckie Grimmer from Norfolk Landscape Gardeners Grown-ups: when was the last time you got grubby? No, not just a bit smelly from sitting around watching an entire series on Netflix in your jammies all day, I’m talking about a sloppy mud, grass stained, pocket full of sand, twigs in your hair kind of filthy. When was the last time you actually let rain fall on your head? Walked outdoors barefoot? When did we decide that dirt was no longer entertaining?
too) I’ve picked up are the Small Adventures Journal by Keiko Brodeur and My Extra Messy Adventure Notebook by Nicole Daw and Hannah Jones McVey for the National Trust.
Now I double dare you to go outside and pick up some mud. If you really need a reason then you can do a texture test to determine the quality of your garden soil, but really I just want you to get it all mushy in your hands and fingernails and remember what it’s like to be mucky. I promise it won’t hurt and that you’ll be able to wash it away once you’re done. You can even bring out a bowl of water and towel for your hands as a figurative comfort blanket. To do a soil texture test, dig about 15cm below the surface then follow this RHS created flow diagram: (source: schoolgardening.rhs.org.uk/Resources/

Speaking from experience, it will enrich the quality of your life. Quoting Yes Man; “The world’s a playground. You know that when you are a kid and then somewhere along the way everyone forgets it.”

Some of my particular favourites are: - Walk barefoot on a mud safari - Target practice with mud and a spoon - Dissect an owl pellet - Give a tree a face - Disappear into the landscape – camouflage yourself and disappear - Create a wild assault course - Go on a puddle hunt - who can find the biggest splash? And even the less messy: - Make patterns with sand - Build a scarecrow - Stop and listen - Identify the clouds - Take a breath… take note of the natural smells around you, and - Make a time capsule

Cliffscapes and Marshscapes
An Easter Watercolour Exhibition by John Hurst
Sheringham resident and professional watercolourist, John Hurst is holding his annual exhibition of new paintings at Cley Marshes Visitors’ Centre from 5 - 18 April, 10am to 4pm daily.
John is well known for his observational studies of the Norfolk coast and this exhibition
is no exception. By using strong colours, The Artist has created distance and atmosphere in the landscape, enabling the viewer to visualise being there at a particular time of day and in specific light.

John’s exhibition will also feature copies of his acclaimed book ‘On My Way’, a book of twenty-five illustrated Norfolk coastal walks, ranging from Holme in the west to Winterton in the east, each supported by hand drawn maps, colour palettes, sketches and completed watercolours. A humorous foreword has been written by John’s lifelong friend and patron, Sir Ian Botham, as The Artist was involved in Ian’s early Leukaemia charity walks and has pledged proceeds to the Foundation from sales of the book. Featured in winter editions of the national ‘Coast’ and ‘Country Life’ magazines, the hardback edition was kindly
sponsored by Norfolk Country Cottages, Bakers and Larners of Holt and His Royal Highness, The Crown Prince of Bahrain, who acquired one of John’s original watercolours for his private collection.
John is also grateful for the support of Chevertons Printers, Cromer and to Jim Witherspoon, Sheringham, who has been beautifully framing his watercolours since 2006.

Mr Collect commented, "This was an opportunity for me to experience driving in a Nissan Leal Electric car. On a fine spring like day I found the test drive route, scenic and interesting. I found the interior spacious and easy on the eye. The instrument panel is bright and clear to read."
"The controls were readily accessible and simple to operate. Overall excellent drive and remarkably quiet. The quiet ride in the comfort of the leaf made the journey very enjoyable and I was quiet surprised to find I am a greener drive than I thought!"
"Many thanks to Nissan and Crayford and Abbs for sponsoring and organising this event and you look forward to enjoying my prizing winning day at the 02 courtesy of Nissan."

First Highlights announced for
Music, chat, comedy, burlesque and cabaret for North Norfolk’s premier arts festival The award-winning Holt Festival has rapidly established itself as one of the East of England’s most anticipated events. Festival organisers have just announced the first 14 highlights for the July 2017 arts extravaganza, giving an intriguing sample of the full festival programme that will be revealed in May. In the summer months the charming North Norfolk Georgian country town is a magnet for tourists. During Festival week, briefly and dazzlingly, it also becomes home to musicians, poets, actors, dancers, artists and comedians as well as attracting extra cultural tourists into the area. At venues all over the town visitors can catch performances encompassing music, drama, visual art, literature, comedy, kids shows, workshops and more. Household names and stimulating discussion are established features of the festival.
Original 70s leather-clad rocker Suzi Quatro has a catalogue of songs that have sold millions of records worldwide and earned her 101 weeks in the UK charts. Suzi has also enjoyed a long acting career that has included TV shows such as Happy Days, Minder, Absolutely Fabulous and Midsomer Murders as well as West End theatre runs, but she’s bringing her seven-piece band to Holt’s spectacular Theatre in the Woods to rock! One of our favourite comedians, the ever-popular Jasper Carrott, is bound to be a big draw at the same venue. His unique new show features a blend of music and comedy, combining a stand up set with an all star band featuring Bev Bevan, founding member of ELO and The Move alongside other midlands music heroes.
At the other end of the musical spectrum there’s a rare UK visit from Spanish opera stars Javier Agulló and Amparo Navarro. The singers will perform a history of opera with arias and duets from Monteverdi and Mozart to Verdi and Puccini with a common theme of jealousy. Also watch out for million selling, Brit Award winning local boy (and former Gresham’s schoolboy) Humphrey Berney on temporary leave from Blake. For this special concert he will be joined by his friends mezzo-soprano Charlotte Tetley and pianist James Sherlock for an evening of song and virtuosic piano. Pop Up Opera, dedicated to broadening the appeal of the form, will perform their accessible and enjoyable adaptation of French composer Emmanuel Chabrier’s deliciously madcap and witty Une Éducation Manquée. A night of homegrown Americana, Roots in the Wood, will see a double bill of Norfolk heroes The
16
Vagaband and The Wangford Bass Combo featuring BJ Cole, the latest project from the grizzled Godfather of British alt. country Hank Wangford. Talks include former Observer Literary and Associate Editor, Robert McCrum, also an established BBC Radio Four broadcaster and distinguished veteran of the British book world. Robert will discuss matters of life, death and literature, in conversation with Charles Pugh. Professor Robert Winston is a pioneer of IVF and his work developed surgical techniques that improved fertility treatments for many people. The doctor, scientist, TV and radio presenter and politician comes to Holt to discuss the possibility of human genetic modification and its ethical considerations. As Chair of the Public Accounts Committee Margaret Hodge was the scourge of waste and inefficiency by successive governments and at the same time she helped to disclose the chicanery of companies out to avoid tax. This is chronicled in her engaging book ‘Called to Account’ with former Norwich Theatre Royal Chief Executive Peter Wilson. East Anglian and Radio 4 favourites Kit & McConnel return to their favourite festival with a new set of comic cabaret songs. Hugely acclaimed Edinburgh hit Cautionary Tales for Daughters features comic song and animation from the appropriately named Tanya Holt, coming to Norfolk following a sell out London season that delighted audiences and critics alike. The Ronnie Scott’s Soho Songbook uses world-class live jazz, narration and rare archive images to trace the history of the world famous London jazz club from its humble beginnings as a basement music bar to a venue that hosts international stars. Viva Cuba is a night of irrepressible Cuban rhythms, dance and atmosphere from the cream of UK based musicians and dancers – be prepared to get up, join in and learn to dance Cuban style. Cirque du Cabaret promises to be one of the most spectacular events with a mix of circus, burlesque and cabaret that is bound to set temperatures rising. The company are London’s longest running cabaret company and feature 1920’s styled burlesque starlet Bonnie Fox, circus thrills from international stars from as far afield as Russia and Mz Marelena (AKA Abi Collins) as host.
2017 is to be the final year of Charles Pugh’s tenure as Artistic Director. ‘I always intended to step down
after 3 years’ he said. ‘I hope I have built on the previous successes of the festival and left it in an excellent shape for my successor. Entry details for the Holt Festival Art Prize, which attracts submissions from far and wide will be announced soon.
The 2017 Holt Festival runs from 22 – 30 July.
Tickets for the early shows go on general sale on 13 March following 2 weeks of priority booking for Friends, Ambassadors and Sponsors. For full details of the programme, updates and how to become a Friend, Ambassador or Sponsor of the festival visit www.holtfestival.org

Sheringham questions and answers
Each month we are inundated with questions from vendors and buyers alike. As property experts we get asked a lot of questions – from both vendors and buyers. Here is a selection of this month’s…
If you have a question for our property expert find us on social media (@arnoldskeysresi #AskClive) or email us sheringham@arnoldskeys.com #AskClive
February 1. I’ve offered the guide price for the property but I have a property to sell, why won’t the owner accept my offer? As agents, we have a duty to ensure that we act in the best interest of our client – the seller. If they accepted an offer from an applicant who has yet to sell then they may be precluding other interested parties in a better position. In general terms an offer will only be accepted from a non-dependent purchaser who can proceed immediately with the purchase.
YOU Y OU WANT WANT T O MOVE... MOVE... TO TURN TO? TO? BUT WHO DO Y YOU YO OU TURN
2. An online valuation tool is suggesting the property is worth a lot less than you’re asking. Why is this? An online valuation tool is just an algorithm, based on the previous known sale price. It will have no reference to any changes made to the property since it was last sold. That’s why an expert estate agent with years of experience and local knowledge is the only person able to give an honest valuation.
3. I’ve completed on my purchase – can I now have the keys please? Generally speaking - yes you may. However the selling agent will only release them once they have been instructed to do so by the sellers’ solicitor. They are the only party that can confirm the property has been paid for.
CROMER AND SHERINGHAM PROBUS CLUB
‘Anything from a pin to an elephant’ is an intriguing title for a talk, and Chris Armstrong used this to entertain Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club at their lunch on 7 March at The Links Hotel, West Runton.
He has recently produced a fascinating book dealing with the larger independent family retail businesses in Norfolk, namely Roys of Wroxham, Palmers of Great Yarmouth, Bakers and Larners of Holt, Aldiss of Fakenham and Norwich and Jarrolds of Norwich and Cromer. All have retained their family connections through the years with Bakers, widely known as the Harrods of North Norfolk, dating from the 1720s and starting off as an ironmongers, Palmers from 1837 and now thirty times its original size and Roys from 1899 and regarded as the largest ‘village’ shop in the country.
Many of those running the businesses had turned out to be quite eccentric but prepared to adapt to changing retail needs, and their current success speaks volumes about their vision. Roys even turned to holding Saturday night dances at one time to encourage customers to their store, and Palmers introduced conductors barons as one of their lines so successfully that Sir Henry Wood used only theirs for his Promenade Concerts in the Albert Hall.

To their credit, these family- run stores have more than held their own in the battle with the much more powerful national chains, and we the customers are grateful.
Our next speaker is Sir Michael Savory who will be dealing with the history of defences at Weybourne. As usual this will follow our lunch on Tuesday 4 April and if you are a retired or nearly retired business or professional man and would like to join us please contact our Lunch Secretary Dave Vickery on 01263 824306, or have a look at our website candsprobus.club for more information. People who use the many services that ACT provides regularly ask about the different options that might be available to them and to have this extensive range of information in one place would be very beneficial.
For those people who do not have easy access to the internet it can be challenging to find out what is available. This ‘one stop shop’ will hopefully provide lots of help and information. This is the first event of its kind in the area.

Family Disputes after death: Where there’s a Will by Tammy Parnell, Partner and Contentious Probate and Trusts Solicitor is an associate Member of the Association of Contentious Trust and Probate Specialists ( ACTAPS) Contentious probate is on the rise, with the number of Will disputes now at record levels. All too commonly, people find themselves embroiled in a family war over the contents of a loved one’s Will. Furthermore, with our growing elderly population and approximately 850,000 people diagnosed with dementia in the UK, increasing numbers of elderly people are vulnerable to financial abuse.
Coping with the grief and bereavement of losing a loved one is one of life's biggest challenges. Going through this process after a family member or friend has died is never easy, but matters can become even more difficult and emotive if there is an issue or dispute with the Will or Estate.
You may feel unfairly treated by the contents of a loved one's will or feel the deceased has failed to make adequate financial provision for those left behind. Alternatively, you may have had doubts about the mental capacity of the person signing the will or feel they were pressured into signing it by someone else. Our modern, complex families are causing some issues too. For example, what if a person re-marries and leaves their estate to their new spouse and child from that relationship, but not the children from their first marriage? This can result in you wanting to contest a will (this process is also referred to as contested or contentious probate).
Clapham & Collinge are holding a series of legal briefings throughout March and April to examine many of the issues surrounding Wills, Probate and the administration of estates, and how and by whom they can be challenged. The briefing will highlight several of the most common difficulties we encounter when acting for our clients, and what we have learned about in the legal and regular press, including: • An update on recent developments and the most newsworthy cases
• Abuse of the elderly : common signs, how to identify them and what to do when they are spotted
• Forward planning : how to minimise potential issues occurring
• How we can assist in the event of a challenge, using case studies as illustrations Taking place at North Walsham, Fakenham and Sheringham these legal briefing is designed to be of value and relevant to businesses and individuals as well as other professional advisers such as Accountants and Financial Advisers. They are free to attend and light refreshments will be available at each venue.
To book your place or for more information, please contact Louis Hilldrup-Boorman on 01603 693579 or email lhb@clapham-collinge.co.uk

Dear Residents of Sheringham and Beeston Regis - Standing Down
It has been a pleasure and an honour to serve you over the last 16 years (4 terms) as your County Councillor, a role which I hope I have carried out with honesty, integrity and transparency across the political divide. I now feel is the time to stand down and give someone else a chance to take the reins and bring a fresh perspective on local issues.
The last four years at County have not been easy with the political complexity that has prevailed, and I am conscious that at times the political card has not been played for the benefit of Norfolk but for party politics itself, a situation which I am afraid is not my brief.
In 2014 I was delighted to attain the Chairmanship of the County Council and to represent your County on the many official functions around Norfolk and further afield, meeting the Queen and Prince Philip, Prince William and Lady Catherine amongst many others. In this ambassadorial role I attended over 250 events that year as Chairman. I have also completed 11 years as Norfolk’s Champion for Restorative Approaches taking Norfolk to be one of the leading exponents of the approach in the UK.
I am pleased to say the Liberal Democrats have found a very willing and able candidate for Sheringham and Beeston Regis in Helen Dalton-Hare who I hope you feel you can support. I know with the support of Norman Lamb as I had she will be a good and trustworthy member of Norfolk County Council.
Again very many thanks for all your support over the last 16 years for the Honour and Privilege of being your elected County Member, I shall still remain the District Member for North Norfolk District Council.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
HELP! Daisy, one of the young cats, recently re-homed by us, is missing. This little short haired black cat has escaped from her new home in the Queensway area of North Walsham. If you see a new cat in your area that fits this description, please contact us. We would love to get her back and can lend a trap to catch her if necessary as she is very nervous so may not let you approach her. Fortunately she is chipped so easy to identify if successfully caught. We have recently been helping with the neutering cats at a local business site in North Walsham, with invaluable help in the catching being done by a gentleman working there. To date, three of these young cats have been caught and neutered. The last two caught have now left the site and are enjoying life at local stables where they have shelter and regular meals provided by the owner. Before continuing to catch the cats, plans were made to provide shelter for those left at the site and this did hold up the catching for a time. With somewhere safe to place the cats when they return from the vets, neutering them will now continue. All the vets we use for this type of work are very helpful and will hold cats overnight if necessary. In the meantime, we had a call from our friend at the site advising that he had seen a young kitten there. With no mother or litter mates around we advised him to catch it, if possible, and we would take it into care. Early the next morning, I

received a call from our friend to let us know he had caught the kitten and, after advising Stephanie, I went to collect it and take it to Dilham. As soon as we looked at the kitten, we saw it had a problem as it had a large lump of poo stuck to his bottom and, as he was long haired, this would be difficult to remove. With an appointment to take another cat to the vets that morning Stephanie rang to see if they could see him too. As they were holding a nurses clinic that morning, they were happy to oblige and this little lad was left there to receive professional care. Poor little lad, he was returned later that day with a very sore ulcerated bottom, and was given Manuka Honey and Daisy, the little cat Vaseline to make him more comfortable and antibiotics to missing from the help his recovery. Irene, one of our fosterers, was happy Queensway area in to take him under her wing and, one week later, he reNorth Walsham turned to see his vet who not only gave him a clean bill of health but also, subject to a satisfactory blood test when he is vaccinated at 9 weeks old, will be giving him a new home. A happy ending for this little kitten we called ‘Manuka’. Our friend at the site has been keeping an eye out but no further kittens have been seen. If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign. If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Or visit northwalsham.cats.org.uk for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
The Big Brew Success
Fairtrade for Sheringham had their main event, ‘The Big Brew’ on 11 March, serving tea, coffee, and homemade Fairtrade cakes, with stalls and tombola. The winner of ‘Find the Chicken’ competition appropriately had fresh eggs as a prize. She joined in the theme by saying "I'm very egg-cited to have won!" We had a wide range of people from one year old Freya, to MP Norman Lamb, to people in their 90s.
The helpers, including the Mayor wearing his chain of office, worked very hard, selling raffle tickets and serving coffee.
Many thanks to Tesco, Sainsbury, Lidl, and the Town Council for all their help. Added to the proceeds from other sales since January we are sending £500 to Traidcraft Exchange, which helps farmers in Kenya to lessen the impact of extreme climate change. Fairtrade for Sheringham Group

Flying high at Toll Barn Vets
As a veterinary practice offering specialised care for pets including exotic animals we regularly get visitors of all shapes and sizes and this month has been a “soaring success for our feathery friends!
In addition to our more usual visitors such as a Siberian Eagle Owl who required surgery for pododermatitis (infection of the feet), a feather plucking parrot and a parrot requiringendoscopy for respiratory infection, we also teamed up with Phoenix Bird Of Prey Rescue, a charity focusing on the rescue, rehabilitation and release of wild birds of prey. This months wildlife casualties included a Barn Owl who had flown into a wire, and a kestrel who had been hit by a car.
Both casualties underwent x-rays in our Diagnostic Imaging Suite which showed the Barn Owl had fractured his humerus (the bone between the shoulder and elbow) whilst the Kestrel had luckily escaped without any fractures, although examination showed signs of concussion. When caring for wildlife our main concern is always to enable them to return successfully to the wild whenever possible.
Green Hearts and Skilled Minds
Sheringham Mayor David Gooch and Norfolk WI Federation Chairman Wendy Adams braved the freezing weather on Saturday 11 February, to join 10 hardy WI members at the Town Clock to share their love for climate change. The 600 green hearts, knitted, sewn, crocheted and decorated by Sheringham WI members were shared with passers-by to raise awareness of this important issue. On Tuesday, 14 February, Sheringham President, Liz Withington (pictured with Norman Lamb MP) joined WI members from all over Norfolk, and other campaign groups, at the Forum to give out over 300 green hearts. Over 200 children also took part in a WI Maker's Month workshop decorating and making green hearts.
Sheringham ladies!
On 13 March our meeting will be a practical workshop event with members choosing from crafts, flower arranging, photography and learning how to use Facebook. Watch out for multi-skilled
If you are interested in finding out more about us, other WI campaigns, our various speakers, joining in our many activities, simply making new friends, or just a night out with the girls, then please feel free to come along to our meetings which are held at The Community Centre on the second Monday of the month at 7pm. You will be assured of a warm welcome!
With this in mind we operated using micro-surgical equipment to repair the fracture of the humerus. It was essential to achieve perfect alignment as a key aspect of Barn Owl flight involves hovering and this requires perfect wing function. The Barn Owl continued his rehabilitation with physiotherapy and medication with Phoenix Rescue and came back to visit us after two weeks when we re-xrayed his wing to assess the extent of the healing. We were delighted to see that the fracture had healed perfectly and his wing alignment was excellent, so we were able to remove the pin placed at the time of fracture repair. He has now returned to Phoenix Rescue and will complete his rehabilitation and be released back into the wild.
Following several weeks of rehabilitation we re-examined the Kestrel to ensure all signs of concussion had resolved and there was no lasting eye damage, as this would affect his hunting ability. Thankfully there were no signs of remaining damage and the Kestrel was declared healthy for release. As he was found just yards from our surgery, our team assisted in his release within the Toll Barn Vets grounds. It was a truly wonderful sight to see him souring back to the wild. It is a privilege to be able to extend our skills caring for exotic pets to caring for and preserving our wildlife and we are grateful to charities such as Phoenix Rescue for their continued support and skill in the rehabilitation and release of wildlife.
Free of Charge Micro-chipping Toll Barn Vets are offering free of charge Micro-chipping for Dogs, Cats & Rabbits over 4 months old. Offer ends March 31st 2017.
