Celebrating the life of Humphry Repton
The life and work of landscape gardener Humphry Repton is set to be celebrated through a photography competition, launched by the National Trust’s Sheringham Park.
As part of the build-up to 2018 and the 200 year anniversary of the death of Repton, Sheringham Park is joining forces with the International Garden Photographer of the Year competition to search for images taken at places he helped design.

Repton was involved in more than 300 commissions across the country including several in the east of England. As well as Sheringham Park, he was involved in the design of the Holkham Estate, Catton Park and at Bracondale in Norwich. Further afield, the National Trust’s Wimpole in Cambridgeshire, Woburn Abbey in Bedfordshire, Harewood House in West Yorkshire and Russell Square in London all bear the mark of Humphry Repton. Celebrating the life of Humphry Repton
Continued from front cover... However, it was Sheringham Park that he considered as his most favourite work, stating in the Red Book design for the park “Sheringham possessed more natural beauty and local advantages than any place I have ever seen”.

Malcolm Fisher, Visitor Services Manager at Sheringham Park is looking forward to seeing the best images from the competition on display in 2018.
“I am very much aware how much the Repton views are still enjoyed today here at Sheringham Park, and it will be fascinating to see images from right across the country showing the impact he still has on the landscape 200 years on from his death.”
Tyrone McGlinchey, Managing Director of International Garden Photographer of the Year said “Making the connection between photography and unique green spaces, whilst encouraging public engagement with the natural world is one of our main objectives. We’re really excited to launch this special award, create these connections and share the beauty of plants and gardens through the lens of a truly great landscape gardener.”
An exhibition of the images from the competition will form a part of the 2018 celebrations and it is hoped that the competition will inspire many photographers right across the country to go out and enjoy the work of Humphry Repton. The competition was launched on the anniversary of Repton’s death 24 March 2017 - to enter visit: https://igpoty.com/competitions/humphry-repton-2017
There are National Trust vouchers for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places, plus winning images will also be published in the beautiful annual book of International Garden Photographer of the Year Competition.

MIND YOUR PEAS - AND QUEUES!
The Headmaster of the 'Briston School for Wayward Girls and Boys' wishes to announce that on Saturday 22 April, there will be another School Dinner Night at the Copeman Centre at Briston.
Our first one last year was a great success, despite the Head’s mortar board catching fire after one of the first formers mistook it for a bunsen burner. A crowd of ‘pupils’ came along and enjoyed a superb (our words, not theirs) two course dinner, loads of laughs, and some live music of the 50s and 60s to dance to, which is actually quite a feat when you are full of lumpy custard!
The evenings are fundraisers for the Copeman Centre’s on-going improvements, and now that our Chemistry master, Mr. Lindsay Doyle, is out on parole, and his eyebrows have grown back, it has been decided it’s about time we had another bash to raise a bit more cash! So, for just a fiver, you get dinner, dancing, a rolling nostalgic slide show on our big screen TV, and loads of laughs - especially if you dress up - not compulsory of course, but you will get extra gravy on your plate if you don’t! To book your tickets, telephone our Miss Parsons right now while she’s sober you can pay by cash, cheque, or leading credit or debit cards - the number is 01263 860844. We open the doors at 6.30pm, with dins around 7pm.
Pictured here from the last event is the Headmaster (being held up by four of his better looking pupils - well, three out of four anyway) - so why not throw caution and come and join us - we promise we won’t tell your neighbours … or Ofsted!
North Norfolk Chorale to perform for Holy Week
During Holy Week the North Norfolk Chorale will sing excerpts from Handel’s Messiah at St Nicholas’s Church, North Walsham on Wednesday 12 April at 6.30pm. This will be an act of worship so there is no admission fee - a retiring collection will be held in aid of Church and Choir funds.
Jonathan Dodd, Musical Director of North Norfolk Chorale, said “the Messiah is so popular it needs no introduction from me. We shall be performing a selection of movements that give a good flavour of the work. And of course it will include the Hallelujah Chorus! Do come – everyone is most welcome”.
Sheringham Town Council St Georges Day Concert
Sheringham Town Council believe one of Sheringham’s greatest strengths lies in the closely connected community we have. This St. Georges Day we will be taking the words of Jo Cox MP ‘we are far more united and have much more in common than things which divide us’ to inspire us to all to celebrate and continue to build our strong and vibrant community in Sheringham. Councillors have invited musical groups reflecting all aspects of the community to come and join us for an evening, reflecting the wide musical talents of Sheringham. The Town Council have also invited many representatives of the organisations in the town to come together and enjoy this event and at the same time, strengthen and celebrate the bonds we have from working together.
It would be wonderful if you as the general public, the vital individual members of our community, also came to take part in this celebration of our town at St. Peter’s Church Sheringham at 7.30pm on Saturday 22 April. Admission is free but there will be a retiring collection in aid of Ladybird Playgroup. Refreshments will also be available for purchase during the interval. Sheringham Independent 461

NENBC events
Weybourne Camp, Muckleborough Hill and Kelling Water Meadow on Sunday 23 April 9am – 1pm - Moss Taylor will lead a walk around an area which is famous for migrant birds, but which is largely inaccessible to the general public. We will leave the Muckleborough Collection car-park at 9am, explore a variety of habitats within Weybourne Camp, then visit Kelling Water Meadows and return back over Muckleborough Hill. We have scheduled the walk to (hopefully) catch a nice range of spring migrants, but birding at migration time is always highly weather-dependent. This is a moderate walk over varied terrain (some of it possibly wet), with a short climb over Muckleborough Hill. Stout footwear is essential. We will return to the car-park between 12noon and 1pm. The Muckleborough Collection has facilities and a cafe. The Muckleborough Collection is just to the west of Weybourne Village, and the entrance is off the A149 coast road by Foxhills Campsite. Go through the gates (which will be open from 0830), proceed along the straight drive and turn right at the V1 doodlebug and long white building into the clearly marked carpark. The post-code for sat-navs is NR25 7EH. As usual, children are welcome if accompanied by well-behaved adults, but we regret no dogs. Andy Clarke will co-lead.
Birdwatching Holidays on a Budget - Trevor Williams Thursday 27 April 7.30pm – 9.30pm - For those on a modest budget, who want to make the best of the birding opportunities on a foreign trip, this talk introduces a dozen or so potential venues for a birding holiday. Venue - Aylmerton Village Hall, NR11 8PX. Please park along Church Road or in the overflow car park at the church. Please ensure that local residents can still access their driveways and there is sufficient clearance for agricultural vehicles to use the road. A torch might also be helpful, as the village has no street lighting. To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing.

Big Society Award winners announced - Winners named at Sheringham Little Theatre ceremony Volunteers who have helped improve their communities were thanked publicly as they were named winners in the Big Society Awards during a ceremony at Sheringham Little Theatre last month. North Norfolk District Council organised the Big Society Awards to thank the people and the projects that help to create a strong community.
Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council and Chairman of the Big Society Fund Panel, said “It has been a pleasure watching such deserving people come here tonight for recognition. The winners are of course hugely deserving, but so are the other finalists who may not have won, but should leave here full of pride at their efforts and achievements.”
Cllr John Lee, Chairman of North Norfolk District Council, acted as Master of Ceremonies at the event. He said “The purpose of the evening was to celebrate, recognise and honour a type of work that so often goes unseen and unrecognised – volunteering. We say thank you to some of those innovative projects, but especially those people, that help to build a strong community spirit in the area, all for no payment. We have heard stories of determination and hard graft; long term planning and dynamic working. We have also heard stories of heart rending effort in the most difficult and dangerous of circumstances.” • Outstanding Contribution by a Young Person to their Community : Abigail Bunn. Abigail has been nominated for this award as a tribute to her dedication to North Walsham Gymnastics Club and her desire to support the younger members. Abigail is an excellent coach, firm but fair and combined with her outstanding practical work is a real asset to the club. Abigail is looking forward to the club moving to their own dedicated premises later this year. • Outstanding Contribution by a Young Person to their Community : Holly Rumsby. Holly has been
nominated for this award in recognition of her involvement and fund raising efforts for a number of organisations close to her heart including North Norfolk Surf Life Saving Club and St Johns Ambulance. Holly has raised several hundred pounds by making and selling key rings and coasters. She is a trained first aider and lifesaver and volunteers her skills at public events. • Voluntary Services to Young People : Hayley Allard. Hayley has been nominated for this award in recognition of her outstanding work to improve play facilities in Gresham. She has cheerfully volunteered endless hours even with a young baby, her drive and enthusiasm has helped unite the whole community. • Voluntary Services to Sport : William Wright. William has been nominated for this award for his dedication to Bradfield Cricket Club. His expert knowledge has helped the club achieve an award winning cricket pitch in 2015 & 2016, known for its outstanding playing surface throughout Norfolk. William is a constant source of encouragement to players of all ages, he is greatly respected by everyone he meets and is described as the spirit of Bradfield Cricket club. • Community Project 2017 : Erpingham Leisure Hub. Erpingham Leisure Hub has been nominated for this award for providing opportunities for all members of the community to participate in a variety of affordable and inclusive sporting activities. This enables the local community to enjoy the physical, mental and social benefits that participating in sport can achieve. • Voluntary Services to a Neighbourhood : Dennis Rolfe. Dennis has been nominated for this award for his voluntary services to the community of Itteringham. He has been involved with Itteringham Community Shop for over 20 years and is the longest serving volunteer on its Management Committee.
Dennis can be found most days of the week ensuring the shop is fully stocked, assembling weekly orders for the more vulnerable customers, helping teach new staff and volunteers the ropes and managing the animal and bird feed counter. • Outstanding Contribution to a Big Society Funded Project : Alexis Thurston. Alexis has been nominated for this award for her dedication to gymnastics in North Walsham through establishing the North Walsham Gymnastics Club for children aged 3 to 15 years. Alexis is the driving force behind the club, is a mentor for younger children, head coach and fund raiser. Her skills and expertise have helped gymnasts attending the club progress to become regional champions. Alexis dream is for the club to have their own bespoke gymnastic club, this will become reality when the club moves to its own building later this year. • Outstanding Act of Heroism : David Castleman. On 23 July 2016 at Sea Palling beach David responded to request for help as there were people who had got into difficulties in the sea. David did not hesitate before he plunged into the water and swam 50 metres to reach a man who was unconscious and towed him back to the beach where he regained consciousness and was airlifted to hospital. • Outstanding Act of Heroism: James Richardson and Aaron Spencer. On 19 August 2015 at Pinewood beach at Wells-next-the-sea. The life-saving duo were on a Scout summer activity trip when Aaron spotted a boy in inflatable dinghy having difficulty in getting back to shore. Aaron showed tremendous courage to swim over 100 metres to the boy, before towing him back to shore via the inflatable’s tether line. James then helped Aaron pull him to safety. • Those people who played such a large part in the 'before and after' of the January tidal surge were also thanked for their efforts.
WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS SOLICITORS in in 2017? 20 17 ?
“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”
I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that Christmas can be a difffficult time for many people or resolutions are made to resolve issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offffers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.
“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 2017 to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.
Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 0 1263 8 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk 01263 823465

Sue Arnold, North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet Member for Planning and Planning Policy, said “We believe these turbines are in the wrong place and we want to support the views of our local communities.
“Our view is very much that we do not need onshore wind turbines, which among other impacts, can damage the local tourism economy.”

A new service from Norfolk Landscape Gardeners
The North Norfolk Property Market
www.norfolklandscapegardeners.co.uk
Can you afford to ignore it? By Richard Hewitt, Director, Hayes + Storr
Why now? A wise old client once said that she disliked pensions, preferring to see and touch her investments. Many now agree - 0.0%, or thereabouts, sitting in a bank is not at all "interesting", with demand strong for all types of property. Whilst we are threatened by City money skewing our market, there are plenty of opportunities being exploited by locals.
The banks A key to stress-free property investment is to minimise the need for bank finance. Banks can make life awkward and whilst interest rates may be low, upfront survey and arrangement fees are often not! Some clients achieve ‘bank free’ developments, where landowner, developer, contractor and purchaser share in the risk and reward all relying on the sale of the completed build, as the time to get paid.
The frenzy Currently, our local towns can resemble a gold rush with swathes of land promoted for valuable development – see Cromer, Holt, Fakenham and Swaffham for example – with plenty of companies and individuals understandably jumping on the bandwagon! Whether the frenzy makes sense in the long-term is debatable. Tensions are felt very locally, as important landscapes are threatened by "grand designs", and village tranquillity lost Sheringham Independent 461
to the new outlying housing estate. However, it is certainly capable of making money for anyone involved.
Is it for you? So, what about individuals thinking of bricks and mortar pension pots? One or two cautionary points; such purchases are relatively expensive with higher stamp duty and the cost of upgrading properties to make them fit to rent out. If you do need to borrow, whilst mortgages are widely available, including equity release and ‘buy to let’ options, these are administratively timeconsuming and complicated.
The Aim Find a well-built property. Avoid flats and apartments if possible as they involve monthly maintenance fees and restrictions on use. Such restrictions can prohibit some rental options.
The work All services and facilities must be checked and up-to-date. Please research your duties as a residential landlord. Take time to choose a decent tenant and visit your property regularly.
The taxman Once the rent is flooding in, do not forget the taxman!
Interested? If all the above seems daunting, perhaps it is not for you? But if that new build in your large

garden or a cute Victorian terrace appeals to you, then why not?
What now? Contact the local agent, the savvy broker, the clever accountant or thorough insurance broker – or even your experienced local property solicitor! Norfolk Angling Club
Norfolk Angling Club, formed in 2013, is celebrating, following recent international selection and match results for its members.
As a small club with around 50 members, Norfolk Angling Club started out as a Monday night league for pleasure anglers to get together and fish, and although this ethos still continues at the Club, some of its members have taken match fishing to the highest level.
Some club members were recently selected to the SAMF (Sea Anglers Match Federation) GB Team, and recently competed on the North Norfolk beaches of Kelling in the 2017 SAMF Challenge, against strong opposition teams from the Police, Combined Armed Forces and the Fire Service. The two day match was fought hard by all teams, with anglers catching plenty of fish, including Dogfish and large Pouting. However, it was the SAMF Team and contributions from some Norfolk Angling Club Members, Simon Bone, Dene Conway, Richard Hipperson, Russell Taylor and Henry Randall, that ensured the final win for SAMF.
Four other members also received news in February that they have been selected for the 2017 England International Sea Angling
Sheringham Independent 461
Squad: • Kimberley Lawn of Cromer has been selected for the Ladies Home Nations Team to compete in Wales in July. This is in addition to her selection to compete at the World Championships in South Africa in November. • Adam Molloy, of Cromer and a Cromer Academy student, has been selected for the Junior World Championship Team to compete in France in July. • Henry Randall of Cley has been selected for the Men’s Home Nations Team to compete in Wales in July, and Dene Conway of Ritegear Angling Centre, West Runton has also made selection to the Men’s squad. The England Team members are now actively fundraising to raise much needed funds, including doing raffles, selling England Junior Team Mugs, and 100 squares through Ritegear Angling Centre, and if anyone would wish to sponsor our England Team members or even donate a raffle prize, any help would be gratefully received.
The Club is also holding its annual Norfolk Sea Angling Festival on 8 and 9 April. This two day open angling match is to be held as a rover match on the beaches of North Norfolk and has a first prize of £500. Anyone interested in

NNDC has had a couple of bumpy months which will not affect Sheringham South directly, but I thought people would like some information on how we are doing as a Council. There have been so many scare stories in the local press, all of which are untrue or greatly exaggerated. We just want you to have confidence in NNDC as our lovely voters! Where do I start? Let's try going back to the loss of our two executive officers. As it happens, they were no great loss because both had engineered their ‘poaching’ to GreatYarmouth some weeks before they declared it.
As a Senior Executive, Sheila Oxtoby was no great loss because we already had a council which was and remains in the top four in the United Kingdom. Our various departments have won accolades countrywide! These facts are not about politics, but about the huge effort that the officers and boys and girls of your Council are putting in. If you doubt me, I would be proud to take you in to the NNDC and introduce you to them! They have been accused of ‘low morale’, excessive sick absence, a culture of bullying? Lots of this ‘squit’ has been taken on board by

local newspapers, quite wrongly. The only bullying going on is by the ladies of Democratic Services who have a go at me for not telling them what I'm doing! Hey ho. So, the turbines! I, and others, have received fantastic backing from our Norfolk people and by now you will know that we will fight the imposition of these monsters. Even if we were to lose this appeal, we will continue to fight for our North Norfolk. As Planning Chairman, I am so proud of our Committee, who are unanimous in their refusal.
front garden. I may even part with some cash myself! Now we are off into a red hot summer. Say hello if you see me quenching my thirst in Waterbank Road, or maybe have a small glass, you're always welcome!
Finally, Friday 21 April will be the day for you to come and kick us to death at the Community Centre 12noon to 1pm. Look forward to seeing you.
Richard and Judy
I would like to clear up a couple of things. Again, the papers led on this and got it badly wrong (good news doesn't sell papers!).
This business of selling assets? We do not sell assets unless hugely pressed. The Hotel Cromer needs looking at because there is always ‘wriggle room’. If it happened then the money would have been pumped into Cromer anyway. However, we don't have these problems in Sunny Sheringham South. Having done a recent tour I have to say that the gardens are starting to blossom. Maybe I can get Judy to offer a prize for the best

D-671 The Sheringham Shantymen is Decommissioned
In the two years running up to 1997, the Sheringham Shantymen set their sights on providing the RNLI with a D Class inshore Lifeboat. They met their target and the RNLI allocated the Lifeboat to the Wicklow Lifeboat Station in Eire where D-671 The Sheringham Shantymen started its ten year service life on Monday 25 June 2007. The Lifeboat was formally handed over to Mr Des Davit, the Lifeboat Operations Manager of Wicklow Lifeboat Station by Mr Bob Hawkins, Chairman of The Sheringham Shantymen on Saturday 13 October 2007. There followed an interesting weekend of Gaelic celebrations where the Shantymen entertained the lifeboat crew who reciprocated the goodwill at every opportunity. On 23 February 2017, D-671 The Sheringham Shantymen was finally decommissioned and returned to Poole to become one of the RNLI’s relief fleet. Wicklow Lifeboat Operations Manager, Des Davitt, said “we are indeed indebted to the Sheringham Shantymen for theirgenerosity and support. This ILB New Builds & Extensions certainly did not let us, Restorations & Refurbishments the RNLI or its donors Loft Conversions & General Building down as 96 people, 7 dog owners and a Plastering & Floor Screeds grateful sheep farmer Floor & Wall Tiling can attest”.

SHERINGHAM HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY SPRING SHOW AND TALK
The daffodils seem to be early this year and with our Spring Show not scheduled until Thursday, 20 April all members are asked to make a big effort to search their gardens for flowers and plants to fill up the show benches. Hopefully there will be plenty of tulips but there are classes for all the other spring flowers and pot plants and even a chance to show off your Easter bonnet.
Although only members can compete in the show anyone can, for a small charge, come along on the evening to see the flowers and also to hear a talk by Jane Lister of Hoecroft Plants. 2017 marks the 25th anniversary of Hoecroft Plants at Severals Grange, Wood Norton and sadly to quote Jane’s cricketing terminology it will be ‘25 and out’ for the nursery as the work required to keep the nursery and the beautiful grounds looking good is becoming tough. Jane is planning a busy and colourful year and we should all take the opportunity to visit the nursery and the lovely gardens during 2017.
The talk commences at 7.30pm but members will have received their show schedules which give the times for making entries.

St Andrew's Ladies Association
On 14 March we were delighted to welcome Imogen White, Manager of Amazona Zoo in Cromer -such a lovely and enthusiastic young lady who obviously loves her job and all the animals in her care.
The zoo opened in 2008 but most of our ladies hadn't ventured in! However when we heard about all the different animals living there we may be able to have an outing one day.
The zoo is home to a wide range of animals from tropical South America including jaguars, several different species of monkey, snakes, beautiful pink flamingos and tapirs and all living in secluded grounds just a few minutes from Cromer town centre.
There are four keepers, including Imogen and on the site there is a shop, cafe, an education centre in the yurt and conservation is very much the theme. You can also have a Brazilian birthday at Amazona Zoo.
It was fascinating listening to all the stories of the many animals happily enjoying the North Norfolk coast.
The meetings for April are as follows : 11 April - Follow up to the Fashion Show in the Store at Cromer 25 April - Midday outing to Paul Graves, Butchers in Briston where we are invited to a tour of the farm, followed by lunch and lifts are available if required. Winter Notes from the Commons
The 2016-17 winter months (December, January surprising that some insects would be out and about and February) were again been pretty mild locally. but it was a little surprising to hear of two Adders Having visited Wheatfen (The Ted Ellis Trust noted on the central marsh (24th Dec) by Karen reserve) last November and been shown the world’s Moore. Following some strong winds a male Teal spent some time resting on and around the pond (22nd Dec). Another Firecrest along with Siskins and Redpolls were in the wooded area (23rd Jan). A sunny but cool day (3°C) followed (24th Jan) and some 1000+ Pink-footed Geese passed over east and in the afternoon a small Adder was found basking on a low gorse bush. A Little Egret passed over heading south (26th Jan). The Firecrest and Kingfisher were again noted (30th Jan) by Mark and a Common Snipe was spotted overflying the central marsh.
February proved to be a colder month with many mornings starting with a ground frost, although it was generally a drier month with some great sunny days. Plants were beginning to be seen with Stinking Hellebore and Spurge Laurel showing off their
Stonechats have made an appearance on the Common although previously it has been in March. On 23rd Feb storm ‘Doris’ struck and blew over a fair number of trees including a large Japanese Elm near Caxton Park. The tree came down between two bungalows without causing too much damage Spurge Laurel although it did wreck a summerhouse. As far as the Common is concerned the loss of this tree may mean the loss of the White-letter Hairstreak. This butterfly’s caterpillars feed only on Elm-type trees and suffered badly when Dutch Elm disease killed many English Elms. It has remarkably managed to survive using sucker Elms and moving across to the disease resistant hybrid Japanese Elms. We will have to wait and see if the butterfly has moved to any of the sucker Elms around the Common. The beautiful spring fungus Scarlet Elf-cup was found (25th Feb) for the first time on the Common, although confirmation is still waiting as it could be the closely related Ruby Elf-cup. The first Common Frogs were noted in the small pond (26th Feb) but no spawn was seen and a Dotted Boarder moth was noted (28th Feb) by Mark near the layby.
At the moment it is an uncertain year with some wildlife showing early signs and others coming out later. As usual nowadays we must watch and wait as things happen differently in this changing world. Francis Farrow – Hon. Warden www.beestoncommon.org.uk

New Life for the carpets, upholstery and vinyl at the Salvation Army
It has been a wonderfully busy start to the year at New Life Cleaning Ltd. So many customers took advantage of our recent offer of ‘free underlay with every carpet order’, that we extended it into March.
Having continued to expand as a family based company, dedicated to achieving great results and personal customer service, we now carry out an array of different cleaning services for a broad spectrum of people and business’s, both local and further afield. A recent job carried out at the Sheringham Salvation Army embodies, very well, the wide range of Services we now provide.
We were kept very busy for a number of days by Sheringham Salvation Army cleaning carpets, vinyl, upholstery and carrying out carpet repairs. The three of us - Leonard, Matthew and I - cleaned the flooring throughout the 350m2+ building along with nearly 200 chairs in the auditorium, achieving fantastic results as you can see here below .....
Using our low moisture carpet cleaning system the carpets were given a new lease of life and the much loved and busy building was up and running again with minimal disruption. The upholstery hosted a number of different stains all of which were successfully tackled with our hot water extraction machine, which achieves optimum results with our detergent free and eco-friendly solutions. A job of this nature takes some planning and a willingness to work closely with your customer so you can meet their specific needs. It is great to be carrying out our services for such a key local ....Thomas Perrott organisation that does so much for the Sheringham community.

Mini face-lift surgery rises in popularity
Cosmetic medicine and surgery goes through trends. First, we had skin only facelifts and then we had an era of deeply invasive tight ‘wind-tunnel’ look type facelifts. Now we are in an era of over-filling the face - although we do not do this at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic.
Whilst non-surgical options such as botox, fillers and lasers are very effective for early signs of facial ageing, they cannot tighten a lot of loose skin. A surgical face or neck-lift entails removing this excess skin. For natural looking results, we do not need to over-tighten the face and neck. We can just tighten it a little and add some volume with fillers of fat transfer and use lasers to improve the skin. Such combination yields superior results and is much better than too much of fillers or surgery alone.
Why awake face-lift? Many cosmetic surgery patients do not want to go under general anaesthesia. Being under general anaesthesia can be associated with risks. Nausea, vomiting, breathing problems and sluggishness for days afterwards can result. Those who have been there, say recovering from a general is like being hit by a truck. Operations under general anaesthesia also tend to have prolonged bruising and recovery involved.
How do you perform face-lifts at the Coltishall Clinic? With our technique, the operation is performed under local anaesthesia with an awake patient. Lidocaine numbs the area to provide pain control and this lasts for 12-18 hours afterwards - reducing the need for painkillers.
What types of facelifts do you offer at the Coltishall Clinic? Apart from a full range of non-surgical treatments, we offer a variety of surgical options mentioned below : • One stitch facelift- this is our minimally invasive facelift. It is suitable for younger patients or for those who do not want a full face or neck lift but desire a subtle result at low cost. • Laser face-lift - this is an excellent option when the main consideration is excess fat in chin and jowls. Laser can melt these and also heats the
surrounding tissue. This stimulates collagen formation and assists in skin and tissue tightening. The amount of tightening greatly depends on skin type, age, elasticity, general health and other factors. • Mini face and neck lift- we perform a tumescent facelift. It is also known by various other names such as weekend or mini-facelift, S-lift, MACS lift or a facial lipo-lift. Pre medication is recommended to relax the patient. A special local anaesthetic solution is injected in front of the ears. This solution numbs and gently lifts the skin from underlying structures. One side is operated at a time. A small amount of skin in front of and below the ear is removed. The skin is lifted, underlying layer is tightened and finally the skin is repositioned and closed with fine sutures. • 3-D facelift – this is a no knife facelift for patients who do not have lot of saggy skin but have lost volume from their face. We take fat from where patients don’t want it such as abdomen or thighs and transfer it to face where it provides a volumetric 3-D face-lift. • Neck lift only- this can be performed through a tiny 1-inch incision in the neck crease. This is suitable for patients with neckbands. Men with turkey neck in particular may be interested in neck only lift where it can be combined with removal of excess skin.
What are the benefits of Coltishall clinic face-lift procedure? Dr Sanjay Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS Medical Director at the Coltishall clinic has had advanced training in face and neck lifts in the USA and has adapted best practice and technological innovations. As the procedure is performed in the clinic purely under local anesthesia and not in a hospital, it offers the following advantages : • A natural look • Quick recovery • Minimal complication risk • Minimal scars • No hair loss • Less cost • Less risk of infection
With so many face and neck lift options on offer, along with a whole host of cutting edge non-surgical options, we are sure to have a solution to offer you. So why not give us a call on 0800 0430737 or log on to the website at www.coltishallclinic.co.uk.

Have you considered joining a Probus Club?
I have been writing press reports on behalf of Kelling Probus Club for the past two years and my telephone number appears on each report : I have had several inquiries and as a result, we have gained a few members.
However for various reasons we do occasionally lose a member, and to keep the Club viable, we need new members. I firmly believe that there are many men in the area, both newcomers and long standing residents, who would enjoy the Club and gain a lot from the fellowship and friendship it provides.
The name of the club is a bit of a misnomer, as we have members from all over the local area. To tell you a little more about our club and to invite you to call me to discuss joining. I have compiled a list of answers to questions you might like to ask :
Who are you? I am the Press Secretary for the Club, my name is John Whittington and I have been a member for four years. Before I moved to North Norfolk I belonged to Rotary, but decided not to transfer my membership as I was finding the commitment a little too much. However, I do like the idea of meeting like-minded people for lunch and a chat and find listening to a speaker quite stimulating and informative.
Who are the members? Men who are retired or nearly retired from a wide range of occupations including finance, engineering,
armed services, the law, the Church, education, transport, medicine and a lot of other different jobs.
What is the age range? Currently we have members from 60+ to 90+ but there are no prescribed limits.
What is the club's purpose? Entirely social. It provides an environment for making and meeting friends and hearing informative and entertaining talks, mostly with local themes.
When do you meet? Lunchtime on the third Thursday of every month.
Where do you meet? We are lucky to be able to use the facilities at The Dales Hotel, Upper Sheringham.
What happens at meetings? We chat in the bar, have a two course lunch in the dining room, then we usually have a speaker for about 30 minutes. There is usually some club business to deal with but this rarely takes more than a few minutes.
Would anyone talk to me? You will be given a named contact for when you arrive for the first time. They will introduce you to the others and sit with you at table for lunch so that you can talk to other members.
How would I remember other members' names? Everyone has and wears a name badge.
Is it very formal? No. Dress code is jacket and tie, and you choose where you sit, with
no restrictions.
Can I just turn up? No. Simply because we have to notify the hotel of numbers in advance. How much does it cost? £15 a year for membership and £12 for each lunch meeting.
Who runs the Club? A small committee elected within the membership.
Is this Club part of a wider organization? No. There are Probus clubs throughout the country, but each club is completely independent and runs itself. Each club has its own meeting day and its own rules, but they all have the same purpose.
Are there any activities other than the monthly meeting? There are occasional outings arranged, when wives and partners are our guests.
Does the club do fund raising activities? No.
Would I have to join immediately? No you can come along as a visitor until you decide if Probus is for you.
Can members bring guests? Yes. This is how we gain new members, but guests do not have to be prospective members. Female guests are welcome for our Christmas lunch and on outings.
How do I get in touch? Ring me, John Whittington on 01263 820333. I do hope you consider giving us a try : for your wife/partner it gets you from under their feet for 3 or 4 hours every month, which I am sure they will appreciate.
Have you got annoying aches & pains?
Chantal Groom, who was born and raised in Norfolk and now lives in Melton Constable, has opened a second practice on Central Road in Cromer, called Body Wise. Mother of two Chantal, has been helping to alleviate pain by various non surgical methods for many years.. "I qualified as a massage therapist in 1998, and after gaining a distinction in my Masters Degree in Chiropractic in 2013," says Chantal. "I have helped hundreds of people with diverse problems which either do not respond to drugs or which people prefer to be treated without drugs." Chiropractic is a therapy concerned with your NeuroMusculoSkeletal system, basically everything to do with your nerves, muscles and bones. "My extensive training in both disciplines allows me to see you as a whole person. I believe in treating the whole body and to this end can offer deep tissue massage alone or Chiropractic manipulation in combination with deep tissue massage, rehabilitation exercises and lifestyle advice and support.” Chantal treats people of all ages, from tiny babies, mums-to-be, the young and the not so young. "I am very committed to finding the causes of pain, which can be as simple as correcting poor posture, to more complex issues. Sports a Passion “I also love working out at the gym and am particularly interested in helping sportsmen and sportswomen to keep fit and help any issues that arise.”
Sheringham Independent 461
”I care for many athletes from many sporting areas, and I am currently working with two runners in training for the London Marathon, enabling them to keep their performance levels at optimum, while dealing with the other fitness issues they have. I also help golfers, rugby players, footballers, swimmers, body builders & tennis players to name but a few.” How do I do it? Many different techniques are used, from the manipulation Chiropractors are known for, to the very gentle techniques for the very young and elderly. I offer a range of soft tissue techniques and heat therapy including deep tissue massage which is particularly beneficial for sports persons, active muscle release, stretching and a more therapeutic massage for those needing general care that's less intensive. Even when massaging I'm using my more medical training to keep one eye on their wellbeing. Most patients will be given tailored exercises to help them along with their recovery. Treatment plans are personal - there are no generic treatments. "If you have any problems with back, neck or leg pain, difficulty walking, aching joints (such as elbows, knees, hips, wrists and ankles), headaches, muscle aches, injuries, pre or post operative problems or worries, then I would be happy to try to help you overcome these problems.” I offer a unique approach to Chiropractic, massage and rehabilitation exercise and advice. Come and have a free 30 minute preliminary consultation & see if Chiropractic can help you.

North Norfolk Photographic Society
North Norfolk Photographic Society held a competition for printed pictures on 15 March. The judge on this occasion - a new visitor to the Club - was Dianne Gibson, who came from the other side of Norwich to do the honours. Dianne is a member of Bunwell and District Camera Club. Judge Dianne Gibson
As is now the arrangement, Novice members were first to put up their prints to be assessed. First place went to Val Dawson whose somewhat menacing photo of a crocodile (maybe an alligator?) was called ’Keeping Watch’. Second was Grace Glaister with a picture of a field, and in the middle of
it, two crows. Grace also won third place with ‘Remains of the Day’.
The ‘Advanced’ section followed. This was won by Bernard Dawson, with a clever picture of a face mixed with an overlay of rectangles, each filled with various shapes and images and entitled ‘Dilapidated‘. Second came Paul Richards’ ‘Horse with a View’ a horse in a landscape - and third Barb Gardner with ‘Dilapidated’ - Advanced ‘Norwich Cathedral from Peters’ Bridge.’ winner by Bernard Dawson

How I love the springtime The birds are in full song, They start as soon as dawn breaks And sing sweetly all day long. Raindrops glisten on the trees And every bright spring flower, The countryside is fresh and green After an April shower. The cold grey winter has now passed And the earth awakes once more, April showers and sunshine Have opened Nature’s door.

With grants of up to ÂŁ50,000 available per project totalling over ÂŁ600,000, rural organisations and communities are being encouraged by the Fund to consider applying for funding to support their countryside projects.
Set up by HRH The Prince of Wales in 2010 the charity has now awarded grants to over 200 projects across the UK totally over ÂŁ8 million. The grant programme tackles a wide range of rural issues including support and business advice for traditional farming families, career support and training opportunities for young people and support for communities to run vital community services. This March, applications are being particularly welcomed from community shops, pubs and innovative projects intended to alleviate rural isolation.
Clare Crookenden, Grant Manager, said “The Prince’s Countryside Fund is seeking applications from creative and inspirational projects right across the UK. We are keen to encourage more applicants from the East of England. Public information secures penalty for dog fouling couple beach we are really keen to assist the council in any way. We have to work together to make our environment and the place we live clean and tidy.”
North Norfolk District Council issues fixed penalty notice for dog fouling in West Runton A couple from Weybourne has been fined £60 for not bagging and binning their dog’s mess.
The offence took place in Water Lane, West Runton on 24 January and was captured on CCTV but it was the quick thinking of local business owners that ensured there was sufficient evidence to issue a fixed penalty notice (FPN).
Louise O’Shea and her partner Martin Hipkin, who run West Runton Café, witnessed the offence and took down the number plate of the vehicle driven by the couple. This information, along with the footage of the offence, was given to North Norfolk District Council. Louise said “No one wants to walk along the road and stand in dog mess, it’s just not nice. “As the owners of a café and car park near the
The fixed penalty notice was for £80, reduced to £60 for early payment Cllr Angie Fitch Tillett, Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, said “This just shows that if we work together we can tackle dog fouling. We want to thank Louise and Martin for their help and encourage others to report dog fouling with as much detail as possible. “We hope this fine sends a clear message to any irresponsible dog owners out there that not cleaning up after your dog will not be tolerated by our communities.”
Cllr Sarah Butikofer, Ward Member for the Runtons, said “I am delighted that by working together members of the local community and the

Newly retired with some energy and enthusiasm, or in work but wanting to ‘give something back’ to your community?

It supports people aged 50+ (some with dementia) by providing a Day Services Hub, lunch club, Keep In Touch clubs, intergenerational activities and a Drop In/Befriending service.

Council have been able to take action against those who fail to clean up after their animals. “Almost everyone loves dogs but not their mess, and this action sends a clear message to anyone not acting responsibly.” The offence was failure to comply with ‘The Fouling of Land by Dogs Order 2008’ and Sections 55, 56, 57 of the Clean Neighbourhood and Environment Act 2005. The order covers all land open to the air and to which the public are entitled or permitted to have access (with or without payment).
If a dog fouls at any time on land to which the Order applies and a person who is in charge of the dog at that time fails to remove the faeces from the land immediately, that person shall be guilty of an offence

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Although Daisy is still missing we have not given up hope that she will surface in time, so if you do see a timid black cat, new to your area, scavenging for food, please give us a call so that we can check to see if it is her and, if so, get her back into care. There is good news, however, of another little cat that recently went missing Mike Harrison BSc (Hons) RSCT DipISRM in North Walsham as registered practitioner she has now been reunited with her family. As Willow, the little cat concerned, had C also only recently joined her family they Ɣ joint, back, neck & muscle pain, stress, anxiety, digestive disorders, insomnia, were really worried as migraines and other recurrent headaches, she did not know the tinnitus, ‘clicky jaw’; area. negative. He was therefore able to go straight to his new home after being vaccinated and now lives with the vet who treated him. What a lucky lad he is. At this time of the year we start to receive many calls relating to kittens and thought it might be prudent to mention a couple of misconceptions people may have. Most people are surprised when advised that a Bertie, what a little honey! female cat can get pregnant when she is Now safe in his new home only 4 months old, which is not ideal from her point of view as she is still growing herself and could have problems when giving birth. We have also had instances where a cat will get pregnant again shortly after giving birth so, again, not fair on the cat. There was also a recent instance where someone contacted us for help under the special neutering campaign as her cat had kittens and the father was the mother cat’s brother. She was under the impression that this was not possible. Father, brother, son, any of these can father kittens if living in the same household and not neutered. If there is too much interbreeding, we have seen litters with health problems, which is another reason to get all cats neutered. If you have a cat and are worried about the cost of neutering, please contact our neutering line for a voucher, either one of the special £5 ones, which can be used at one of our vets, or a fixed price one, which can be used with any other vets. The neutering number and information is listed below. If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign. If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. Gold Standard Cat Care Comes to Norfolk! Anyone who has ever owned a cat will recognise how particular they can be with their likes and dislikes, and the challenges this often poses in caring for them.
Here at Toll Barn Vets we have always known how important specialised care is to all our patients including cats! We are extremely proud to have been awarded Gold Standard Feline Friendly Practice status by the International Society for Feline Medicine, a leading authority on caring for cats. Toll Barn Vets is one of only 5 practices within the entire Norfolk and Suffolk region to achieve this award.
How does this help your cat? Being recognised as a Gold Standard Feline Friendly Practice means our premises and procedures were rigorously inspected and
our staff demonstrated the high standard of cat care required by the Society. Our reception has a separate waiting area for worried (or just plain fussy!) cats including a platform to raise and cover cat baskets to help minimise stress during their stay. Our hospital wards have a “cat only area to prevent any fighting between cats and dogs, and pheromone diffusers and large kennels complete with hiding holes, together with a selected variety of food, keep cats comfortable during their stay with us.
Our equipment and facilities for investigating disease and performing surgical procedures were also rated at the highest possible level and our ability to perform complicated surgical procedures and techniques such as blood pressure monitoring, tonometry
(measuring intraocular pressure), x-rays, ultrasound and endoscopy entirely in-house enabled us to be accredited as a Gold Standard Practice.
In honour of our recent award (and our love for our feline patients) we are offering free of charge health checks with our qualified veterinary nurses for all our feline patients so we can spot any signs of disease early and offer the best possible chance of successful treatment.
Please give Toll Barn Vets a call on 01692 407126 to book your appointment.

Shameful lack of progress moving learning disabilities and autism care into the community - Norman Lamb
Norman Lamb MP is demanding urgent action to reduce the number of people with learning disabilities and autism stuck in big institutions, following serious concerns highlighted in the recent Channel 4 Dispatches documentary about the care given to people with these conditions.
‘Under Lock and Key’, which aired on Channel 4 earlier this month, revealed that thousands of people with severe learning disabilities and autism are still stuck in hospitals, despite promises to reduce the number of people in these settings. Experts have long called for people with these conditions to receive support from local, personalised care providers in the community, rather than big impersonal institutions, which reduce independence and harm recovery. The programme also discovered serious concerns about the care in one of Britain’s largest mental health centres, St Andrew’s in Northampton, including heavy use of face-down restraint, seclusion, and anti-psychotic medication in both adults and children.
Fauzia Yasmin Hussain, who has autism and Tourette’s, was admitted to St Andrew’s at the age of 15. She was kept mostly in seclusion, in a room with very little natural daylight, and was given high
32
doses of anti-psychotic drugs including intramuscular injection. After her family raised concerns about her care with Norman Lamb, who was then Care Minister, he visited St Andrew’s and was appalled at how she was being treated.
He said in the documentary “I went to St Andrew’s and saw Fauzia in her room, which in effect was a cell. A 15-year-old girl was being treated in effect like a prisoner. It was one of the most shocking things that I’ve seen in my time in parliament. Just as a human being I was horrified.”
Mr Lamb initiated a review of her care, which ultimately led to her being discharged in September 2014 after almost two years in the institution. She now receives high-quality care at Alderwood Care Home in Colchester, coming home to visit her family once a month. Her condition and quality of life has improved dramatically.
Norman Lamb has now written to the Chief Executive of NHS England, Simon Stevens, to request a meeting to discuss care for people with learning disabilities and autism, along with Fauzia’s aunt, Dr Shahana Hussain, and Dulwich MP Helen Hayes, who also appeared in the programme. Commenting, Norman Lamb said “It is shameful that there are still so many children, young people
and adults with learning disabilities and autism who are stuck in institutions and treated as second class citizens. Submitting young people to face-down restraint, seclusion and sedation is unacceptable and has no place in our NHS. In my view, it is a significant abuse of human rights. I struggle to think of anything less therapeutic or more detrimental to good care and recovery. I was absolutely horrified by what I witnessed when I visited St Andrews. Fauzia was a young, vulnerable girl who was in care funded by the state and was being badly let down. She was being robbed of her dignity and independence. Fortunately, I was in a position to initiate a review which led to her discharge but there are too many people who are treated in this way. We set a new ambition to reduce the number of people stuck in institutional settings by providing better support in the community. We also published a Green Paper before the election proposing new legal rights for people to challenge decisions about their care and to have more control over the resources available for their care. But progress has been far too slow and the Government has not legislated to give people these rights. I have asked for a meeting with Simon Stevens to discuss how we can end this scandalous situation.”

Facebook Fun Funds Friends
For the third year running, Ann Lown has raised money amongst her family and friends for the Cromer-based charity About with Friends.
Ann - ably assisted by husband Malcolm - uses her facebook page to run a photo competition for facebook friends to play. In the past this has included mystery places (Where the Dowst?), mystery objects (What the Dowst?) and last year Who the Dowst? - carefully disguised photos of celebrities. Each time an answer is guessed correctly, Ann puts a pound in her pot and she asks the guesser to do the same.

disabilities the chance to lead the lives they choose. When they become part of our family they have opportunities to develop lasting friendships; engage in fun and active social activities; get involved in the community; have the chance to try new experiences; learn new skills both for life and work; but above all feel a valued part of society while enjoying life to the full.
Ann Lown hands over the pot of money to AwF members
In the past the Lowns have bought a pair of digital cameras for the charity and a projector and large format screen so they can show movies at their base. Now that 2016’s money has been collected, Ann dropped by to hand over a cheque for £603. The money is to be used towards decorating and kitting out their new unit for members who need a little extra support. This building will include a games room, sensory room, chill-out zone and kitchen area. Some of the money has already been used to buy some lovely canvas prints of the bespoke members.

A walk with your dog on a bright spring day can be energising after the long, dark, winter months. Although we escaped winter quite lightly it’s still uplifting to see the days lengthening and the Daffodils in bloom.
If you encounter livestock on your walk it’s important to remember that after being kept indoors over the winter, they can be excitable and inquisitive when first let out to graze. For dog owners and farmers alike safety is a priority and you must keep your dog under control at all times.
Here are our top tips for walking safely where animals are grazing: • Always keep your dog under close control and on a lead where livestock is present. • Don‘t allow your dog to bark at or chase livestock.
• When approaching grazing animals talk out loud so that they are aware of your presence - this way you are less likely to startle them. Once you reach them, walk quietly past and praise your dog for ignoring them. • Avoid lingering between mothers and their offspring, even a cuddly looking sheep can become defensive of her lamb if she feels threatened. • Always keep your eyes peeled for potential dangers, try to find an alternative route around the livestock especially if your dog is elderly or slow. • Consider attending Obedience on Walks classes so that you can train your dog to be well behaved and reliable in order to have an enjoyable walk. • Remember, people have been killed by cattle, keep yourself safe and your dog under close control at all times.
Animal Magic Dog Club based near North Walsham is a fun, family orientated club offering a wide range of training for puppies, junior and adult dogs.
For more information on the club and classes available visit our web site www.animal-magix.co.uk or call Kathy on 01263 720730.
New Farm Aviation Heritage Group
In the village of Frettenham, between Buxton and Spixworth, can be found a relatively new attraction of interest to those wishing to remember our military past.
Starting from one portacabin of artefacts recovered from the crash site of a B24 Liberator called ‘The Belle of Boston" by the proprietor Mr Trevor Hewitt, the collection has grown to five portacabins and a barn converted to two extensive display halls.
Exhibits extend from World War 1 items from The Somme through to present day, mostly consisting of recovered aircraft wreckage of various types including a Trident that crashed onto Felthorpe airfield in the early 1960s.
We also have various military uniforms including a Vietnamese fighters uniform.
The group now has approximately 25 members and is non profit making. We are now open the second Sunday of the month, March through December with free admission. Of course any donations are gratefully accepted, weather monetary or display items to enlarge our collection.
The group would like to thank North Norfolk District Council for their cooperation with our latest project, the mid air collision between the Victor tanker and Canberra. Masses of Canberra artefacts have been recovered. We are now in the process of tracing Victor debris - any help would always be welcome.
Our thanks also go to any eyewitnesses that have helped us so far. We will be holding a fundraising craft fair at Lodge Lane Scout Hut adjacent to Lodge Lane Infant School on 16 April with free admission. Why not come along for a browse (post code for sat nav NR6 7HL) Sheringham Independent 461

A Merry Christmas to all of my fellow Musicians A bit early you might say? Or is this an article that should have been published last December but got put on the wrong pile? No, I do actually mean Christmas 2017.
The problem is, you see, despite the world being confronted everywhere by Christmas advertisements from September onwards, we,the members of the Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band, are too focused on rehearsing and performing our busy seasonal programmes to notice anything else. Then, wham! we are suddenly jolted into realising, by some always got to be first musician handing out his greetings cards, that Christmas Day is only a week away.
This act of one-upmanship immediately throws me into panic mode. I start searching for my computer list of Band members and their partners. Why do I always have difficulty remembering computer file names? (mind you, come on, be fair, I haven’t needed the list for twelve months). Then I enquire into what unused Christmas cards are available. ‘I have four’ says my wife. ‘Four’ I say – ‘Four! I need ten times that many’. It is an exaggeration, but that’s what panic does.
I go into town and buy a pack of charity Christmas cards and sign them. From me and my ‘good lady’. A card for every musician. Then, with a sense of achievement. I stroll round the Band handing them out, feeling a sense of achievement over those yet to put pen to card.

But, with an envelope still in my hand I discover one musician is absent. Where is he? I am told by our Director of Music that he has gone away. Gone away! Yes, Mr X and his wife have flown off to the Caribbean. I am gobsmacked. I ask you, the things people do to get out of giving a Christmas card.
I am not going to mention any names. But you know who you are’Scrooge’. Still, I will keep his card until next year, or hold on to it until he doesn’t go away at Christmas.
Then the festivities have passed. Was there a Christmas? Band matters blur my memory. Christmas cards? What are Christmas cards? The Carol books, parts for Jingle Bells, I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas etc are all handed back in. Out comes a selection from Les Mis, some marches, themes from films and much more. Old favourites. Some crisp new scores. The Band is straight into rehearsing its Spring/Summer programme, which is growing by the minute. And there we are - out and about. Public events, garden fetes, religious services, concerts. Daylight lengthens. And then shortens. The seasons change, so does the music and what’s this on my chair? An envelope! It can’t be! It is! A Christmas card. In case my pacemaker is sent into overdrive by the sudden realisation that I have a week to get and send greetings cards this December, I am bringing to the attention of all members of the Band the following message - ‘A Merry Christmas To All My Fellow Musicians’. Would
somebody please ensure ‘Scrooge’ sees this. Below is a list of The Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band’s public events to June. To see all engagements for the year so far go to our web site www.cromerandsheringhambrassband.com Sat 8 April 7.30pm Upper Sheringham Concert. Admission £5

LABOUR ANNOUNCES ITS COUNTY COUNCIL CANDIDATES FOR Melton Constable – Callum Ringer Norfolk residents a say on the future of their NORTH NORFOLK county. Key services like care for older people
North Norfolk Labour Party has announced its candidates for the eleven North Norfolk divisions in May’s county council elections.
The party hopes to build on the 2013 county council elections when it almost won two seats in North Walsham West & Erpingham and Fakenham.
Labour’s 2017 county council candidates are:
Cromer – Jane Worsdale
Fakenham - Imogen Bruce
Holt – Richard Kelham
Hoveton & Stalham – Mandy McKenna
Mundesley – Ray Mooney
and education for our children need investment, alongside infrastructure such as transport, roads and broadband. Norfolk has a lot to offer but we must ensure that all our residents benefit and prosper.
North Walsham East – Jacqui Cross
North Walsham West & Erpingham – David Spencer
Sheringham – Sue Brisbane
South Smallburgh – David Russell Wells – Stephen Burke
Chair of North Norfolk Labour Party, Stephen Burke, said “May’s elections give North

“Local people are fed up with the Tories and have been let down by the LibDems. Labour offers a real alternative for change in North Norfolk and across the county.”
Norman Lamb, the Liberal Democrat former health minister, has pledged to take on the unacceptable lack of progress in tackling young people’s mental ill health He joined MPs from all parties in swearing to tackle mental illness at an event in Parliament earlier this month, sponsored by the mental health research charity MQ.
New figures from MQ show that four in 10 (42%) people in the UK have come to believe that mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression are now an inevitable part of life, such is the lack of understanding and action around mental health. 84% say that not enough is being done to tackle mental illness for the future, and more than two-thirds of parents (68%) believe that having more education about mental illnesses could prevent suffering for future generations.
Three children in an average class are affected by a diagnosable mental illness. However, many wait for a decade between experiencing their first symptoms and getting help, and only a quarter of young people referred to services receive appropriate care. Overall only £8 is spent on research per person affected on mental health in the UK, which is 22 times less than per person for cancer (£178) and 14 times less than dementia spend (£110). And despite 75% of mental illness starting before the age of 18, less than 30% of the total mental health research spend is focused on children and young people. As a result, the majority of mental healthcare resources are not designed or

developed for young people, leading to poor treatment outcomes in young people and hindering prevention efforts.
Norman Lamb said “Mental illness should not be seen as an inevitable part of life. The current state of mental health treatment would simply never be accepted for a physical condition. MQ’s ‘We Swear’ campaign aims to make it clear that radical change is needed right now, and asks the public to show they ‘give a s**t’ by swearing to take on mental illness. Through research we can get to grips with this growing crisis in young people’s mental health – and build progress towards much-needed hope for everyone affected.”

Alby and District Billiards League Appeal The Alby and District Billiards League was formed in 1932 and has been running continually except for the years during the 2nd World War.
At its peak, the League has consisted of 16 teams, ranging from Mundesley to Gt. Snoring. Sadly, the League has diminished considerably since then, with currently just four teams (Aylsham A & B, North Walsham and Gt. Snoring). Traditionally teams have consisted of six players but with the current state of affairs we have decided to allow teams to consist of between 3 and 6 players, teams with fewer than six players will have some players playing two games instead of one.
The format of the League is that matches consist of six x 30 minute games, which are handicapped (handicaps change on a weekly basis 5 pts more or 5pts less if you win or lose). The League runs through the winter months on a Thursday night from September to March or April. There is also a Snooker League that runs on Monday nights. 01263 710138 Weather with Ned Nimbus
Looking back over the winter, the majority of the period had higher than normal pressure, which kept at bay most of the seasons storms.
The higher pressure was expected but I thought ,and predicted, a colder winter but, other than a burst of real cold air in early February, the intense cold remained over Europe with some places even in southern Spain getting snow for the first time in 50 years.
2016 as a whole followed our normal maritime climate designation - a few above and below normal expectations but that has always happened. Sometimes these trends last a few years, then another change, but in 50 years of toing and froing, our overall weather pattern still comes firmly in the temperate maritime category.
The next three months are best described as 'a mixed bag' weather wise but by the time we get to May the better the chance we will be putting together decent spells of fine weather.
This ongoing improvement, however, will need to have factored in the increasing power of the sun which in the hotter spells will set off the ususual summer storms with torrential rain. Ned Nimbus 21.3.2017

Golf is a game for all, whatever your age, ability or time pressures and it is never too late to give it a try or to get back into it.
As well as the challenge and sense of achievement from learning a new skill, golf ticks many other boxes for health and wellbeing.
The government recommendation is for at least 150 minutes of brisk walking a week. This equates to around 12 holes of golf. So walking briskly around the course is better for you and it

All change at Norwich City by Joel Lodge, our Football Correspondent
A lot has happened since my last article, as many City fans know Alex Neil has been sacked with most feeling it’s been a long time coming, myself included.
Delia and co have taken action and decided to sack Neil with 10 games of the Championship campaign remaining, the board have clearly taken notice and understand that there needs to be a massive overhaul at the club in terms of the squad as well as the structure of the club.
Ed Balls announced on the day of the Barnsley
game that instead of appointing a Chief Executive as they did with McNally and Moxey to instead split that role into two categories, a managing director and a sporting director.
We already know who the managing director is Steve Stone who’s former position at the club was director of finance and when Moxey departed in early February he was appointed interim Chief Executive; as for the sporting director however it appears that Huddersfield’s
