The Crab & Lobster Festival is on its way! Continued from front cover...

The Festival weekend continues in Cromer on Saturday 20 May and in both Cromer and Sheringham on Sunday 21 May.

The Festival will host an array of local food and drink stalls, superb seafood, scintillating entertainment, seafaring crafts, music, comedy, film, crab dressing competitions and the World’s Best Crab Sandwich competition.

Festival chairman Tony Shipp said “I am looking forward to another enjoyable weekend in both the towns. Each has a distinctly different venue. In Cromer, Evington Lawns will host the stalls, heritage marquee, food and Photo: Andreas Yiasimi entertainment, whilst in Sheringham, these will fill the narrow streets at the seaward end of the town. I would like to welcome you all in advance to the 8th Cromer and Sheringham Crab & Lobster Festival.” In Cromer a Woodforde’s bar will be located in the Festival’s main marquee.

In both towns local fishermen will be demonstrating the art of net braiding and pot making as well as the ever popular mobile aquarium from the Eastern Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority. Committee member and local fisherman John Davies said “Fishing is an important part of the two towns’ heritage and visitors will be able to witness at first hand these traditional crafts and take a look at how the fishermen construct the traditional wooden crab pots as well as parlour pots.” Throughout the weekend, there will be Crab Dressing demonstrations as well as the chance to have-a-go yourself and take part in crab dressing competitions.

Alongside the main attracPhoto: Chris Taylortions will be an array of ac-

tivities for children to enjoy and street entertainment for the whole family from Punch and Judy to Razz the Clown. Local Cromer group Walkers are Welcome will be producing a walking fisherman’s trail across the town featuring points of historic interest and historic facts.

Over the Festival weekend, visitors will be able to follow the event’s Porthole Art Trail to hunt out more than 80 decorated portholes located in shop windows and outside spaces throughout, and around, the two towns. Leaflets for the trail will be available in local tourist information centres.

For more information and to view the programme of events (1 from May) please see the website www.crabandlobsterfestival.co.uk.

This year the Festival has worked with Ruth Elizabeth Events, a Sheringham -based events company, to organise the stalls in Sheringham.

Charity to launch new singing group in Sheringham to help fight lung disease

A new singing group is being set up in Sheringham for anyone living with a lung condition. The classes have been set up as a joint project by the British Lung Foundation, North Norfolk’s Breathe Easy Support Group and a local not-for-profit company called Playing for Cake. Twenty-nine singing groups have been set up by the British Lung Foundation (BLF) across the country. Each group leader, in addition to being a trained musician or music therapist, has been given additional training (including information on living with a lung condition) to ensure the classes are not just fun, but can make a positive difference to each singer’s lung health.

The classes will take place at 2.45pm - 3.45pm each Friday at Sheringham Community Centre, Holway Road, Sheringham NR26 8NP from Friday 2 June. There is no need to register – anyone who wishes to attend can just turn up and sing! A voluntary donation of £4 per class per participant will be requested.

Tina Blaber-Wegg, who is leading the singing group, said “I’ve always enjoyed singing and have turned my practical experience as a community musician and local band member into training as a singing for health practitioner. The specific training provided by the BLF means we can bring opportunities for better lung health to local people suffering from a range of lung conditions – benefits which people living in other parts of the UK are

Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club

already experiencing! Through this group, we can improve the lung health of local residents by helping strengthen the muscles used for breathing and help people feel more in control of their breath - plus we can have an awful lot of fun in the process!”

Mayana McDermott, British Lung Foundation’s Singing and Active Project Officer, said “There is increasing evidence that singing helps people living with lung conditions such as COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) to preserve their lung function and quality of life. Since we started the singing programme in April 2015, there has been huge amounts of interest from people living with all types of lung conditions. The singing groups currently support over 300 people living with a lung condition through weekly singing sessions. We hope the programme will continue to go from strength to strength”.

YOU!

THE JUBILEE PLAYERS NEED Birthdays and anniversaries often mean different things to each of us. When you are young, birthdays are a real landmark and who can’t remember the importance of those additional fractions when, asked how old you are, you’re not just 6, but 6¾? Fast forward 60 years and ‘it’s only a number’ or we don’t bother at all.

So, what’s this all got to do with The Jubilee Players? Well, this year we have a significant anniversary. The ‘jubilee’ in our name gives a clue – we were formed in the same year that the Queen marked her Silver Jubilee, 1977, making us 40 years’ old this year.

It’s not unreasonable to assume that we’ve entertained upwards of 7,000 men, women and children in that time – whoever would have thought that many could fit into the Tithe Barn at Horstead? Our membership over the last 40 years has ebbed and flowed as people have come and gone, but there’s always a core number to keep the group ticking over.

Regular audience members know though, that for the first time in our history, we were unable to put on a pantomime this year because our numbers were not as plentiful as we like, or

Family friendly Sports Bar and Grill Hole in One @ Links -West Runton - 01263 838383 need, for such a major production. Nevertheless, we presented ‘Murder in Play’, a comedy drama, which played to sell-out audiences at every performance.

Our next play is in October, and is a farce called ‘Haywire’ by Eric Chappell. It’s got a

varied cast and we’d really love to open our auditions to some new faces – could that be you? We will have a read through of the play on Wednesday 5 July at 7.30pm, and auditions will be held at the Tithe Barn on Wednesday 19 July at 7.30pm. Equally, we’d like to recruit

new backstage crew members to work with our experienced members. Have you got what it takes to help backstage, or to shine the lights? Previous experience is not essential, just plenty of enthusiasm and willingness to muck in. Usually at this time of year, we’re busy rehearsing and it’s always difficult for anyone interested in joining us to pop in, as the actors are running through their lines and social chat is nigh on impossible. There is no summer production in June this year, but we’ll still be busy. During the forthcoming months, we are going to use our club nights to read plays and to socialise over a coffee.

If you’ve been thinking that you might like to have a go at amateur dramatics, either on stage or behind it, then come and join us on a Wednesday evening from 7.30 – we will be at the Tithe Barn for play readings on 10 and 24 May. For further dates and more information, call Ros Chamberlin on 01603 736287. Go on, try it; you never know – you could well be celebrating with us for our golden anniversary!

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS SOLICITORS in in 2017? 20 17 ?

“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that Christmas can be a difffficult time for many people or resolutions are made to resolve issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offffers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.

“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 2017 to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.

Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 0 1263 8 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk 01263 823465

The Society, amongst other things:

• arranges interesting talks with guest speakers and outings; and

Leaving hospital - a national obsession By Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr

We have all seen headlines such as ‘NHS in Crisis!’. There are not enough hospital beds to cope with demand, people are left on trolleys in corridors and ambulances queue round the block. At the other end of the system, people ready to leave hospital, but not well enough to go home, have nowhere to go and so ‘bedblocking’ results, with some desperate cases.

As a preventative measure, and well before any crisis occurs, I would encourage people to make a Lasting Power of Attorney - Health and Personal Welfare (LPA). At least that way, trusted family members or friends have fullyrecognised legal authority to speak on your behalf, in the event of mental incapacity.

But what about those who are vulnerable but have mental capacity or those who lack capacity but have no LPA?

Families need to know their rights. First, before discharge, a social-needs assessment should be done, particularly if the person is elderly or vulnerable, to establish their needs and how they can be met. Ideally, at least one family member (or trusted friend) should be present to assist at the assessment. A copy of the assessment should be supplied. Often hospital staff (even including doctors) are unaware that Local Authority Social Services should be involved in the discharge process. This is so even if the person is ‘self-funding’ (i.e. they have enough money to pay for their Sheringham Independent 463

own care); in that case Social Services still have a duty to assist in putting a care plan in place.

If a care home is recommended, what type should this be: residential or nursing? What if there are mental health issues?

If a nursing home is considered best, a preliminary assessment for Continuing Health Care (CHC) should be carried out, with a family member present. If a person is eligible for CHC, the NHS pays for all care and accommodation: sadly, this is rarely awarded.

Discharge should never take place without all the appropriate assessments and the correct procedures being adopted. Representation by a specialist solicitor enables the person’s rights to be upheld.

If CHC is not awarded, then addressing how the cost of care is to be funded is the next step. If the person has been ‘sectioned’ under the Mental Health Act, this sounds worrying, but an advantage is that it ensures eligibility for NHS ‘aftercare funding’. Taking legal advice at this stage helps to ensure that the correct procedures are followed by the local and health authorities.

Sometimes there is a dispute about where a person should live on their discharge from hospital. This is so not just if a person does not have mental capacity, but also if the local or health authority will not fund the preferred care home, or will not fund a return home with in-home

May 6th 2017

care. Can someone insist on returning home with in-home care, if it costs the local authority more than a care home? Does the question funding take precedence over the autonomy given to individuals under the Care Act?

Leaving hospital is rarely easy, especially for the elderly and vulnerable. Special care is needed to make sure they have both the right medical care and also the right legal advice and care.

This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice.

Although not old by many WI standards as the WI was formed in 1915, Sheringham WI partied hard at their recent 40th birthday party. Based on the 70s, with local band the Squee Gees blasting out glam rock, The Bay City rollers and other well known 70s hits, a ‘boogie wonderland’ was had by all. Members strutted their stuff in 70s wigs and flared trousers so wide they were in danger of falling over them.

North Norfolk Photographic Society

North Norfolk Photographic Society welcomed back Jim Hartje on 5 April.

Jim has been a judge of the Club’s competitions, but this time he came to share his ideas about photography.

Jim Hartje

Jim himself describes his presentation as a miscellany of digital imagery, tips & ideas – where he explores the fine line amid reality, invention and trickery in photography.

He likes to exploit the creative avenues open to us in both Photoshop/ Elements and assorted plugins - and showed images before and after they had been run through a variety of processes on a computer.

Members were shown how to achieve such results and were given an opportunity to see the software in action. The presentation ended with a series of images of windmills, stitched together to make a video show. North Norfolk Photographic Society normally meets on the first and third Wednesdays each month in the Holt Community Centre.

For more information please see the Society’s website at http://www.nnphotosoc.org/ or contact the club’s Hon. Secretary, Judith Wells at 01328 710181

Spring Clean

On 1 April the Sheringham Loke RiverCare Group carried out the annual Spring Stream Clean.

This is essentially a litter pick along the streams that flow across the Top and Beeston Back Commons.

Due to an improvement in the amount of litter collected, ie less than usual, the group extended its activities to cover the layby by the SSSI. Unfortunately, this area more than made up for the lack of litter elsewhere. In fact there was so much that only the smaller items could be collected. Unauthorised fly-tipping had obviously taken place with rubble and paint cans noted, also a container of old cooking oil was removed. In addition many empty spirit and wine bottles were recovered.

However, more worrying was the discovery of two plastic containers for discarded needles (the type normally issued to registered drug users). Such containers should be returned to chemists when full for safe disposal. A total of seven bin bags of rubbish were collected this time.

Litter is not only unsightly, it pollutes waterways, kills small mammals (particularly discarded bottles and drink cans) and is potentially harmful to children and pets (ie discarded needles). We should all be vigilant against offenders and take heart that fines for littering have been handed out recently.

Our thanks to North Norfolk District Council for organising the collection of the rubbish bags. Francis Farrow, Hon Warden

FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND FITNESS CLASS FOR NORFOLK

A sport and fitness centre in North Norfolk is launching a pioneering fitness class which will be the first of its kind in the area and, it is believed, the first in England.

activities. We want to overcome that and hope people on the spectrum – and everyone else - will come and join us.”

Mr Jardine has been working with Sheringham autism campaigner Clare Smith, who was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome four years ago.

The initiative is designed to enable people with Asperger’s syndrome, a type of autism, to take part in exercise activities. The campaigners leading the project say they also have older people in mind who are put off regular classes because they are too brash, busy or noisy.

Sheringham Splash Leisure & Fitness Centre is following North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC’s) Sports Clubs and Hubs initiative, which has been delivering a range of sporting and exercise activities to encourage older and younger people who find using ordinary sports facilities difficult.

“My disability is ‘invisible’ and people have difficulty believing it’s a problem, because I seem so ordinary,” says Clare Smith, “but I’m 60, I’m healthy and I want very much to keep fit. I swim but that gets lonely, and I haven’t been able to find an upbeat fitness class I can cope with.”

The Splash class will be suitable for everyone, but it is being developed with the particular needs of people with Asperger’s syndrome in mind.

“It’ll be just like a regular, fun exercise class,” says Stuart Jardine, Contract Manager for Places for People Leisure which runs several fitness centres across Norfolk, including Sheringham, Fakenham Sports & Fitness Centre and Victory Swim & Fitness Centre in North Walsham. “But we’re making sure the sensory environment the classes are held in won’t distress people on the spectrum. People with Asperger’s and autism often can’t cope with loud music, or crowded spaces, and this stops them being able to take part in fitness

01692 405301

ND ME M CO RE

Mr Jardine explained that Asperger’s is a type of high-functioning autism and like others on the autism spectrum, people with Asperger’s are often hyper-sensitive to sound, smell, sight and touch.

“People with Asperger’s are usually exceptionally bright and don’t often have major physical disabilities. But the difficulties caused by their autism mean, for example, they have problems making out speech when there’s background noise. So Clare sometimes can’t hear our instructors over the music we play to energise participants.”

“And I can’t cope with being so close to people in the popular classes,” Mrs Smith adds. Mrs Smith raised the problems with Splash in Sheringham, her local sports centre. It’s run on behalf of the council by Places for People Leisure. Both organisations want all local people to be able to reach their sporting and

fitness potential, despite any disabilities they might have or if getting older discourages them. All the PPL sporting and fitness centres with pools run separate swimming pool sessions for people with physical and learning disabilities,” says Mrs Smith, “but Asperger’s doesn’t fit these ‘boxes’. I want to be able to take part in all the activities at Splash and with only few little tweaks that should be possible.”

Mr Jardine plans to make the gym autismfriendly when the new fitness class is running. “They’re lowering the background music and reducing whatever other distractions they can,” says Mrs Smith. “It’s so easy to make it possible for Aspies to be included.”

“This is a fantastic idea,” says Cllr Maggie Prior, NNDC’s Portfolio Holder for Health and Wellbeing. “The council has a responsibility to support people with disabilities and this is an excellent way of including a group of people who too often get overlooked.”

The Aspie-friendly fitness classes will start during the last week of May. To book a place or for further details please contact Splash Sheringham 01263 825675 or enquiries@splashleisureandfitnesscentre.co.uk

Treatments to get you ready for summer from Coltishall Clinic

Summer is round the corner and sooner we start to prepare for it, the more time we have to show results. Here is a selection of our treatments that you can benefit from.

Varicose and Thread Veins Changing options for the treatment of unwanted veins. Days of open surgery, prolonged bruising and painful recovery are long gone. How can a beam of light replace a surgeon’s knife? Is this too good to be true? Not anymore- Non-invasive methods are replacing surgery at a very fast rate. So much so that NICE -The National Institute of Clinical Excellence has updated it’s guidelines on the treatment of varicose veins. It has recommended Endovenous laser treatment as the preferred option, foam injections second and surgery where the first two options are not suitable or declined. So come and see us to help you get rid of those unwanted veins anywhere on your face or body.

Safe and effective Laser Hair Removal and Tattoo removal for all skin types. Why it is a great idea to see us. When it comes to laser hair and tattoo removal, it is the wild west in this country. There is no shortage of new places opening up at every corner. We are seeing increasing number of patients who are either dissatisfied, or have been harmed because of poorly trained and unregulated providers and cheap copycat or downright dangerous and unapproved machines.

As we all know, one size does not fit all. There is simply no machine, which is suitable for every person’s needs. With this in mind, we have invested heavily in modern high-end medical machines that have undergone rigorous testing and evaluation. All our therapists also undergo rigorous initial and on going training in laser safety.

We have helped thousands of patients remove unwanted hair, ingrowing hair and rashes, pseudofolliculitis barbae (razor bumps) and even helped patients with poly-cystic ovaries.

Thanks to our proven gold-standard lasers and extensive experience, we are able to treat every skin type- from very fair to dark skin patients.

Laser Liposuction This is the perfect time to consider liposuction for reducing unwanted areas of fat. The procedure is carried out purely under local anaesthesia on a walk-in, walk-out basis and most patients are recovered by 3-5 days. Medically supervised weight loss treatments are also available.

Cromer’s first 60s festival totally groovy, man Cllr Maggie Prior, Cabinet Member for Culture said “There was a super turn out and a fantastic mood at the event. People were having a really good time - dancing kept breaking out near the bands and singers, some of this was as early as 10.30am!

More than 3,000 people throng to new event showcasing sights and sounds of the 1960s Cromer’s 60s Festival drew big crowds last month to North Norfolk’s iconic Cromer Pier.

“The success of Cromer’s 60s event really shows there’s an appetite for something new and fun along the North Norfolk Coast to add to the already superb calendar of events in our area. We are definitely going to look into whether this can become a yearly event.”

The St George’s Day celebration organised by North Norfolk District Council welcomed in excess of 3,000 visitors over the course of the day. Many came on vintage scooters and motorcycles and even more got into the spirit of the 1960s by dressing in period clothing. The event ran from 10am-4pm and was officially opened by TV and radio presenter Helen McDermott. With vintage stalls and vehicles, a screening of the 1966 World Cup Final, live music and dance, Beatles and Thunderbirds exhibitions, great food and Happy Hours in the Pier Bar with £1/pint, the day was packed with fun.

Park, Cromer, who championed the event, said “It was amazing to see so many people having a great time while celebrating the 60s. The 60s are very special to me so being able to share some of my favourite things with other people was really great. Thanks to everyone who came along.

“This 60s-tailored event could be the traditional season opener, and would put Cromer well and truly on the map. Thank you to the supporting teams that ensured the success of my original idea Photos: Dave Hubba Roberts

North Norfolk District boundary review recommendations published

The Local Government Boundary Commission for England has published its final recommendations for new electoral arrangements for North Norfolk.

The proposals are for North Norfolk to be represented by 40 district councillors in future, a decrease of eight.

The final recommendations propose that North Norfolk’s 40 councillors should represent eight two-councillor wards and 24 single-councillor wards across the district, from a present total of 14 two-member and 20 single-member wards. Overall this is a decrease in ward number from 34 to 32.

Changes to the boundaries of 29 wards are also recommended, with three wards (Briston, Poppyland and The Raynhams) remaining the same.

North Norfolk District Council Corporate Director and Head of Paid Service Steve Blatch said “We welcome these recommendations from the LGBCE. The new proposal for North Norfolk’s ward boundaries and members reflects the way our district has changed over the years and will ensure equality of representation for voters, as well as the increased ability to reflect ward issues and identities, and ensure fair workloads for our councillors.”

The report was released last month after the Commission reviewed information gathered via a district-wide consultation that ran from 6 December 2016 through to Monday 30 January 2017. The review was carried out to ensure wards in North Norfolk are in the best possible places to help the Council carry out its responsibilities effectively and to ensure the number of voters represented by each councillor is approximately the same across the district.

A spokesperson for the LGBCE said “We are extremely grateful to the people of North Norfolk who took the time and effort to send us their views. The Commission considered every piece of evidence it received before finalising these recommendations.”

Any changes recommended by the LGBCE are subject to approval by Parliament and would come into effect at the next district council election in May 2019.

The recommendations cannot affect the external boundaries of the district or result in changes to postcodes.

The LGBCE is a national body - it undertakes periodic reviews of local government ward boundaries. The current review is based on population growth and significant variance in electoral equality across different parts of our district.

Arriving at StarCuts Sheringham – the Journey!

Hi I'm Violet Millar, your personal and local dog groomer in Sheringham, North Norfolk. I have lived in and around Sheringham all my life and have spent many years in retail and care environments working around all my family commitments. I never really had the opportunity to say 'What do I really want to do in my life?' 'What do I really enjoy?' and it has taken most of my life, reflecting on experiences and feedback from my family and friends to help me make a choice, that I knew I would be happy with and also provide a service of care to others.

weeks went by, I knew confidently that I had made the right decision. I just loved dog grooming!

I also made some lovely friends along the way and it was quite emotional when we received our certificates and parted ways to set out on our own....

Well, here I am and I have already started my new career journey with some wonderful clients and characters that have enjoyed and are delighted with their 'StarCuts' grooming experience. If you wish to know more, or book an appointment, then please get in contact.

We have always had dogs in our family one way or another and I have always enjoyed the level of companionship that is personal to just you and your dog. Our latest addition, albeit 7 years old is 'Star' my little Lhasa Apso.

It is here that I began my interest in grooming and was regularly 'tidying' her up before her coat grew so much, that she resembled an 'Ewok' from Star Wars on quite a few occasions!

After much discussion with my family and friends, plus a bit more career soul searching, I researched professional dog grooming courses in my locality and happened upon a training centre, not too far away from home

You can be sure of a warm welcome and great customer service at Star Cuts Professional Dog Grooming in Sheringham.Thank you so much for reading.

Sheringham Players

Greg Pope is a solicitor in a well-established, Cromer-based family practice and also Treasurer for The Sherignham Players.

As a long-standing member of two well-known North Norfolk drama societies, Greg has received great acclaim not only as an actor, but as a superb director, achieving huge success with many theatrical productions.

Greg Pope

So this year for The Sheringham Players’ summer production he has chosen to direct a comedy play written by Michael Palin entitled ‘The Weekend’.

‘The Weekend’ is a play with more than a thread of black as well as light humour - with surprising revelations of emotions. Michael Palin has given us lots to laugh at but with a poignancy that gives the script much depth.

It is a cleverly and wittily written play which will not disappoint our audiences.

KELLING PROBUS CLUB

Kelling Probus Club held its monthly lunch meeting at The Dales Hotel on 20 April. Twenty nine members and guests were present.

After a very palatable lunch, Chairman Ken Murray welcomed Icarus Hines, the well known butcher from Cromer, who kept members entertained and amused with his talk on butchery.

Icarus took us back 40+ years to the times of Baxters and Dewhursts, and recalled starting in a Baxters shop as a trainee and explained how different trading was then to the modern High Street butchers of today. He told us about the start of him becoming an independent butcher with a partnership in Cromer, and then later taking on the Sheringham shop as well.

He spoke of the changes in the number of butcher shops and how so much of the meat selling was now in the supermarkets rather than the High Street.

Icarus then talked of the changes in cooking habits and how so much of the food we now eat is ready made, and how meats like chicken are sold in so many different portions and guises.

He stressed that only the best butchers had survived and now most towns had only one or two good butchers. He talked about selling meat, and how gross margins vary between different meats and products. The trends for tighter legislation has been difficult to cope with, but the end product is much safer to cook and eat, as cross contamination and poor storage has almost vanished.

In conclusion, Icarus spoke of their mascot George, a model of a butcher who stands outside the shop and has been used in much publicity including calendars for many years and in Icarus's role in the Master Butchers Association.

Geoffrey Mather thanked Icarus on behalf of the Club for a very entertaining talk.

For a fast and reliable service, contact Clapham & Collinge’s property experts. Buying or selling a property is one of the most significant financial transactions we ever carry out, so it is vital to get the best possible expertise to guide you through all stages of the property transaction.

Our Probus Club meets on the third Thursday of each month for lunch and a speaker.

We welcome new members - if you are interested call John Whittington on 01263 820333 or john.whitto62@gmail.com

Bag it and Bin It!

You may have read recently about two horses which died from eating full poo bags, one of these horses left behind a young foal. This is far more common than you might think; horses, livestock and wildlife are all in danger from discarded poo bags.

Your dog’s poo is a good indicator of their general health and what their owner does with it is a good indicator of their level of responsibility.

Dog owners have been educated for some time now in the importance of clearing up after their pets but recently a new phenomenon has emerged – carefully collected bags of poo being left behind. Wherever you walk, be it on the beach or around the beautiful countryside we are blessed with in North Norfolk, you will no doubt see abandoned bags. Many owners will have done it, left the bag balanced on the groynes or hung from a tree with the intention of collecting on the return journey. But how many owners with these good intentions get distracted playing with their dog or chatting with fellow walkers and forget? I’m sure it’s happened to most of us at some time.

There are a few easy resolutions; you could invest in a Dicky Bag. A purpose designed container in which to place the full poo bags; this container clips onto your belt or bag to keep your hands free. Built in odour prevention means you can continue with your walk minus the whiff of your dog’s deposit. You could just carry the bag with you, proudly displaying the fact that you’re a responsible owner who not only bags it but also bins it. Or like me you can pop the full bags into your walking bag ready to pop into the nearest poo bin, sometimes only to wonder the next day ‘where is that smell coming from’!

At Animal Magic Dog Club we promote responsible dog ownership and stock biodegradable poo bags in the club shop. Our members and all dog owners are encouraged to bag it and bin it and keep our countryside safe and clean for the whole community to enjoy.

North Walsham Live Aid

When North Walsham Live Aid kicked off its 2017 event on Friday 21 April, it set the pattern for two nights of rock music and entertainment that will be remembered in the town for some time to come, including a visit from legendary Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett with his wife, Jo.

Steve is the patron of North Walsham Live Aid and it was brilliant to see him at the gig on the Saturday night.

Rock covers band Storm opened the show on Friday night with 90 minutes of solid rock, joined on stage by Billy Batchelor, maintaining his record of having performed at every one of the Live Aid events.

During the changeover, we were treated to some excellent acoustic numbers by Nigel Ashcroft. When the curtain went back for the second half, it was hard to realise that it was not in fact Guns n Roses on stage, but the GNR Experience, the top GNR tribute band in the country just back from gigs in France.

All the favourites were delivered, giving us a brilliant visual performance as well as first class musicianship. During the evening, a secret auction provided additional interest as well as raising money for the event.

Saturday was opened with a superb acoustic set from Curtis Cronin (look out for this guy

in the future).

Uprising hit us as soon as the curtains opened with an impressive set of classic rock, much enjoyed by Steve Hackett.

A short changeover set by Curtis was followed by The Black Dogs, a really professional bunch of guys delivering a selection of much loved rock, including the iconic ‘Freebird’. The memorabilia auction took place, led by Master Auctioneer Charles HornerGlister, with 34 lots of highly collectable and desirable items, many signed by rock legends. The price of ÂŁ2000 was paid for a strat style guitar with a Pink Floyd design signed by Roger Waters and Nick Mason. Next was a suede Vanwall jacket owned and donated by Sir Stirling Moss, making ÂŁ510. Only slightly delayed by the auction, and always worth waiting for, local favourites The Glamtastics carried us on a sea of lycra and great Glam Rock towards the final band of the evening.

Raising the roof as always, the brilliant Walkway kept the action going to the very end, rounding off another great evening of real live rock music.

Having sorted all the paperwork, I am delighted

to report that we will be presenting The Clare School in Norwich with a cheque for a massive ÂŁ10,000.

This will enable the school to purchase outright the latest sensory interactive floor that they wanted for their new sensory room, and probably a few more things to improve the room.

I would like to thank all the bands, Paul (Tich) Hagen for the sound and lighting system, her indoors, Anne, Julie, Pam, Daisy and Kat, also Woods, David, Tony, Harry, Sean and Laurie.

As usual huge thanks to the Community Centre staff and all the local shops etc that helped out with prizes.

Finally the biggest thank you to YOU, the audience that support us every year. Barry Holden Photos: John Newstead

Summer concert premieres specially-written work

On Saturday 17 June at 7.30pm North Norfolk Chorale will present its summer concert at Salle Church.

The programme will include a new setting of ‘Proficiscere Anima Christiana’ by local composer Charles Damsan. Using words from Cardinal Newman’s famous poem ‘The Dream of Gerontius’ this new setting is for organ, oboe and chorus. The piece has been specifically composed to take advantage of the superb acoustics of Salle Church, and will feature oboe soloist Willow Swiatek, with William Falconer playing the organ.

Under the leadership of the Chorale’s Musical Director Jonathan Dodd, the remainder of the programme will consist of carefully selected music designed to make the most of the acoustics in this building, which has frequently been used for professional recordings.

It will start with Henryk Górecki’s beautiful ‘Totus Tuus’. Originally composed to celebrate Pope John Paul II’s 1987 pilgrimage to his native 24

Poland, this work for unaccompanied voices has become a contemporary classic. Willow Swiatek and her oboe will also appear in Arvo Pärt’s ‘Spiegel im Spiegel’ (‘Mirror in the mirror’).

In the second half of the programme, the Chorale will sing the Duruflé Requiem. The work is influenced by plainchant and again has been chosen to complement the acoustics of the church.

Jonathan Dodd said “we are incredibly lucky to be able to use this wonderful venue, and we are looking forward to presenting a programme which is going to sound utterly captivating there. Some of the music may be new to you – but do come and listen. You might just come away with a new favourite!”

Tickets can be purchased (including early booking discount) at £13 each online at north-norfolk-chorale.co.uk, or by calling 01692 405591. Online bookings will attract a small booking fee. Tickets may also be purchased on the door at the full price of £15. Sheringham Sheringham Sheringham Independent Independent Independent 422 419 463 August July May 22nd 11th 6th 2015 2017

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

When we had our first Bingo Night last year, we received requests to “do it again please”. On 22 April it was, once again, “eyes down”, with barely a spare seat in the hall and additional tables added as more people arrived.

It proved a very successful evening with £506 raised for the cats in care, with thanks to Rachel (helped by her husband and friends), for organising and running the event. Our next event is the Spring Sale on 6 May and we hope you will be able to join us there.

It is now nearly 17 years since the branch was formed and, during this time, advances have been made in cat welfare. While the cats are in care, they are held in cat pens, which are not their natural environment. Years ago (not at our branch), cats were confined in small cages, which must have been very stressful for them. During the time the branch has been running, Cats Protection has reviewed the size required and recently advised that, when our standard pens are replaced, they will need to be larger than the ones in situ.

Over the years, we have also seen changes in the quality and variety of food on offer for our feline friends. Special diets for cats with health problems and different foods available, depending on the cats age and weight, all help to keep our cats happy and healthy for much longer. This is also reflected in the veterinary care now available. In-house blood tests, x-rays, ultrasound and much more, are there to help the vets identify a problem and are now the norm. Veterinary care for small animals has come a long way from the days of James Herriot, and within most surgeries you will find vets with special skills, be it surgery, dealing with feral cats, or identifying behavioural problems etc. However, not to be outdone by the care offered by a local vet, there are also specialist centres where your

cats can be seen by a cardiologist or dermatologist, to name just two. Some of you may have seen some of the amazing skills available nowadays if you enjoy watching the work of the “supervet” Pearl, a lovely friendly girl who would be happy to on TV. Our live with other cats and also dogs animals are very lucky nowadays with so much knowledge and help available to ensure they are kept happy and healthy. They do have one further advantage over us, as it is usually easier to get an appointment at the vets than one with your doctor!

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

J’s WEDDING CARS

The five-show programme, opening on 21 July and running until 13 September is aimed to amuse, bemuse and thrill. Sheringham remains one of a handful of remaining outposts of professional summer ‘repertory’ theatre, where cast members learn a range of different roles.

Theatre director Debbie Thompson said “James was pleased with the way we produced it and sent us the new script to try. He will be involved with rehearsals - making it the first time we have had a playwright involved with a premier here. "This new play crosses and confuses the genres, which makes it fun to work with," she added.

21 – 29 July Intimate Exchanges (Events on a Hotel Terrace) - A bittersweet comedy by Alan Ayckbourn following Celia and Toby’s first holiday for years in a dead-end seaside resort – where Celia’s admirer Lionel is a waiter. Toby has had a heart tremor. Lionel is a hopeless incompetent. Celia is reduced tears and hiccups.

1 – 9 August The Business of Murder - Two people meet to discuss a play script. Humourless host Stone and television playwright Dee. Then Supt Hallett, the man she is having an affair with, turns up for a different reason. The psychological thriller plot twists and turns as they share the business of murder.

11 – 22 August - The Revival (Scared to Death) - A spine-chilling premier. The cast of a ghost play are gathered for a final rehearsal – but things are not going well, with actors bickering and unable to learn lines, then the spooky plot of the play starts to become real and the cast find themselves amid supernatural drama that is not fiction.

24 August – 5 September - Bedfull of Foreigners - Stanley and Brenda Parker’s French holiday descends into chaos. Stanley lowers an attractive naked girl from his room window. Her husband turns up – and the husband’s girlfriend. Everybody is in the wrong bed, and people are dressed as nuns and fish in a fast-paced farce.

7 – 13 September - Noel and Gertie A comedy with music which traces the friendship of stage legends Noel Coward and Gertrude Lawrence, whose joint performances included Private Lives. The show devised by Sheridan Morley captures his wit, their relationship and portrays the style and elegance of the era.

Aylsham Open Gardens

There is always a fascination in visiting gardens hidden behind houses both large and small.

Aylsham will be offering the opportunity to look behind huge old houses, cottages, and modern homes to discover a fascinating array of design, colour and plantings.

Cottage in Peterson’s Lane where there’s live music on the Sunday. What about a cottage garden, crammed with flowers and fruit, in Hungate Street? Then there are intriguing interpretations in modern gardens, too. You will have visit to experience the amazing variety… and there’ll be places where you can stop and admire the scenery with a cake and a cuppa.

All the money raised goes to good causes. Ticket sale money goes to Aylsham in Bloom,

On Saturday 3 June and Sunday 4 June you’ll be able to buy tickets from 11am – 4pm from the Heritage Centre in St Michael’s churchyard. A day ticket will cost £5 or a two day ticket for £8. There will be more than 15 gardens to visit. Most of them are opening for the first time, but there will be a few favourites to revisit, too.

Whatever your preference, there will be something to interest you. Take a look at Bridge House in Millgate where Tom Bishop spent over 50 years creating sweeping vistas from meadowland. Or sit back and relax with a cuppa in an acre of wildlife at Gardener’s

a registered charity that spends all its money helping to improve and sustain the local environment by growing more flowers,

Sheringham and Cromer Lions Club

On Tuesday 25 April, we held a Fashion Show at M&Co in Cromer. The weather was at best wintery and so we were very pleased to see everyone who turned out to support this fun event.

We raised around £100 for Prostate Cancer UK and other local charities and a very big 'thank you' to staff and 'models' on the night.

Incidentally did you know that M&Co are number 14 in the country in the 100 best companies to work for? This speaks volumes for the friendly welcome you get from the obviously happy staff.

Things are moving fast towards our big Motor Cycle event on 10 and 11 June on the Carnival Field in Cromer. Tim Adams, Mayor of Cromer and several Council members are being very helpful and we do appreciate all assistance given. Flyers are out and details are also on social media.

This year, among the featured charities will be the ACT Centre, the Aylsham Gym, the Norfolk Heart Trust, and Ovacome (providing support for those with ovarian).

– Norfolk Open Studios 2017

Saturday 27th May – Sunday 11th June at Gallery Plus, Wells-next-the-Sea

For Norfolk Open Studios 2017 Trevor will be showing his recent work, along with portfolio collections, and will have his easel set up in the gallery, where you will be able to see him painting and chat to him about his work.

Trevor has been painting professionally since 2004 and his acrylic paintings are enormously popular. His graphic style has won much acclaim and has resulted in his paintings being commissioned and purchased for private collections in the UK and abroad.

His paintings have always taken inspiration from his surroundings, be it his base in North Norfolk, or visits to London, or his travels around Italy.

Trevor’s fresh approach has always encouraged the observer to look at every-day views in a new light; they are drawn to the clean lines, flat colours and dark shadows that make up each image. Every painting evolves from his ability

to look at a view and then break it down into its raw elements; it’s just as much about what he leaves out as what he includes, and all of these ideas are now being realised in a more abstract approach. His strong, graphic representations of instantly recognisable scenes morph into abstract representations of a theme. “The basic concept is the same, but the end result is unique”

Trevor’s studio is located at Gallery Plus on the Coast Road in Wells-next-the-Sea, on the beautiful North Norfolk Coast. It’s open all year round and there is always lots of work in progress, as well as completed paintings, limited-edition prints, and greetings cards. Visitors are always very welcome.

Open Studios Opening times: Sat 27, Sun 28, Mon 29, Tue 30, and Wed 31 May. Thu 1, Fri 2, Sat 3, Sun 4, Tue 6, Wed 7, Thu 8, Fri 9, Sat 10, and Sun 11 June. Tues-Sat 10am-5pm. Sundays and Bank Holiday Monday 11am-4pm

Gallery Plus is on the A149 Coast Road, just east of Wells, at the junction to Warham, Wighton, and Walsingham. NR23 1QA

The pond, which had been leaking, was drained and then lined with glass-reinforced plastic, giving a 25 year guarantee. The outside of the pond was given a coating of non-toxic mineral paint.

The refilling process was completed last month.

Cllr Nigel Pearce, North Norfolk District Council ward member for Suffield Park, said “This pond is an iconic part of the town and it is great we have been able to repair and refurbish it so it can bring fun and happiness to the next generation of children and their parents.”

The pond works are one of the elements being undertaken by North Norfolk District Council to improve North Lodge Park.

North Norfolk District Council is also planning minor internal improvements to the café, repairs to the timber footbridge and refurbishments to the bowling green and sunken garden shelters. Possibilities are being explored for Collectors Cabin.

FRIENDLY & RELIABLE - LOCAL & LONG DISTANCE

Amid the sea of yellow Which covers the springtime meadow There's buttercups and primroses And celandines on show. One flower is always overlooked Its profligacy dims its beauty, Resilience is its watchword Its flower's a real cutie.

The dandelion responds each day To the warmth of the

GOOD AS GOLD risen sun, Splaying open its ligulate petals Then closing when day is done.

At evening when the sun sinks west The flower's like a paintbrush dipped in butter, Bees and butterflies look in awe As round it they buzz and flutter.

When it has so many uses, The leaves can be used in salads and wine Warts cured by its latex juices. Cut the root of this versatile plant And use it in cordials and beers, It's caffeine free, so let’s raise a glass “To the dandelion, three cheers.”

How could folk call this plant a weed

Sheringham Lifeboat ‘The Oddfellows’ B 818 Sheringham Lifeboat Service Launch

At 17.30 hrs at the request of Humber Coastguard on Saturday 22 April, the Sheringham Lifeboat was launched into moderate to rough seas to stand by as casualty para glider who lay injured at the toe of the cliff at location approx 400 metres east of Weybourne Beach.

Registered Charity No. 214779

The casualty, who is understood to have crashed into the cliff face and then fell to the beach below becoming unconscious and sustaining several injuries in the process, was placed into a stretcher whilst being looked after by a critical care paramedic and an air ambulance doctor.

(Para gliding in north Norfolk is becoming very popular but relies upon the wind being off the water, anywhere from NW through to NE and when it hits to cliff the airflow is diverted upward to give a ‘lift’ to the craft)

&'

The casualty was eventually taken to the top of the cliff where he was put into the Air Ambulance Helicopter and airlifted to hospital.

Although in this instance the lifeboat was not called upon to actively assist, it was a good service very professionally undertaken in very challenging conditions
