Clean

Members of 2nd Sheringham and 1st Suffield Park Guides spent one of their weekly meetings doing a beach clean.

Armed with tongs, thick gloves and strong sacks, they were surprised at the amount of rubbish that they collected. Items of clothing, food wrappers and a beach ball as well as a house brick or two were found on the beaches in Cromer and Sheringham.

Unit leader Helen West had seen coverage in the local press about the local 2 minute beach clean and was inspired to support the Guides to participate, helping to make our beaches safer for everyone to enjoy spending time on.

The Guides enjoyed completing this community action element of their programme and hope that their efforts made a difference.

Both Guide units, which meet weekly during term time, have an extremely varied and exciting programme of activities usually designed around ideas from the Guides themselves. They are more than happy to welcome any new members, girls aged 10-14. Free taster sessions can be arranged for anyone who may be interested.

Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club

On Tuesday 25 April, we held a Fashion Show at M&Co in Cromer. The weather was at best wintery and so we were very pleased to see everyone who turned out to support this fun event.

We raised around £100 for Prostate Cancer UK and other local charities and a very big 'thank you' to staff and 'models' on the night.

Incidentally did you know that M&Co are number 14 in the country in the 100 best companies to work for? This speaks volumes for the friendly welcome you get from the obviously happy staff.

Things are moving fast towards our big Motor Cycle event on 10 and 11 June on the Carnival Field in Cromer. Tim Adams, Mayor of Cromer and several Council members are being very helpful and we do appreciate all assistance given. Flyers are out and details are also on social media.

For more information about future events, watch this space! Liz Bowler, Press Secretary

Council plans big Splash for Sheringham Sports centre could be demolished, rebuilt and improved in exciting new plan

North Norfolk’s biggest sports and swimming centre could be knocked down and rebuilt as part of an ambitious project to improve leisure provision in the District.

North Norfolk District Council’s preferred option for the future of Splash in Sheringham is to demolish the ageing building and construct an improved swimming pool, gym and associated facilities.

The Council has taken an imaginative approach to the project in consultation with strategic property partners Gleeds. The proposed plan, which is in early discussion stages, could see an £8m facility built by using a combination of long term loans, Sport England funding and income from additional development on land next to Splash. This development could include a hotel and/or retail/commercial units.

Initial details of the proposed plan were made public in papers to the Council’s Overview and Scrutiny Committee, which was due to meet on 17 May. The papers will also discuss the early stages of the procurement process for the Council’s leisure contract which is due for renewal by 31 March 2019, covering Fakenham Sports and Fitness, Splash Leisure and Fitness in Sheringham, and Victory Swim and Fitness Centre in North Walsham. The three Council-owned leisure centres are all very successful, with visits in 2016/17 totalling 462,000 and this has continually risen over the past four years.

Among the recommendations, which will then be put to the Council’s Cabinet in June, will be that a feasibility study around the property and leisure issues is now progressed with a further report coming to Cabinet later in 2017, to then approve the business case for construction of a new facility at the Splash site in Sheringham.

Council’s Cabinet Member for Property, said “This is a highly imaginative and inspirational plan which has the potential to secure a long term future for Splash. We have great aspirations for leisure services across North Norfolk and the opportunity to build a modern, efficient and fit for purpose facility in one of our premier coastal towns is very exciting. “I welcome this plan wholeheartedly and welcome the input we have had from Sport England.”

Cllr Maggie Prior, North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet Member for Wellbeing, said “The range of leisure opportunities across North Norfolk makes a significant contribution to improving the health and wellbeing of our residents. We want to improve Splash and give it a long term, viable future. It already attracts 160,000 visits a year and I believe that an improved facility would see this number increase, benefiting both our residents and the tourism economy, which is so crucial to this part of the world.”

Cllr Doug Smith, North Norfolk District Council member for Sheringham North, said “This plan will be a huge win win for Sheringham's residents and visitors, we will work hard to make this a real success.”

The full report can be found here: www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/media/ 3212/overview-scrutiny-agenda17-may-2017.pdf

Other options include a full refurbishment of the current Splash building, although the papers make it clear that demolition and rebuild would be more cost effective because of the need to completely modernise the Council’s sport and leisure offer at the Sheringham site. This would not be achieved in the current building, which is environmentally inefficient, and would prevent the opportunity for the new leisure contract to provide the necessary savings to help fund the new facility.

The plans have been designed to guarantee ongoing provision of the popular skateboard, football and cricket facilities on the current and adjacent sites.

Jubilant June at the Museum of the Broads

The longer days are upon us and it’s a great time to visit the Museum of the Broads at Stalham. The hours of opening are extending to 10am to 4.30pm Sunday to Friday and 10am to 1pm on Saturday.

Sunday Carvery 12noon±6.00pm only £9.95

Family friendly Sports Bar and Grill Hole in One @ Links -West Runton - 01263 838383

Why not pop in and catch this year’s ‘Broadland in Pictures’ exhibition, featuring contemporary and historic art and souvenirs from the Broads? We also have a number of new exhibits this year including our airborne lifeboat simulator, so yet another reason to #makeitstalham this June.

Next month sees some of the two great events of the year, the Steam Day on 11 June and the Jazz evening on 24 June. Added into this is free entry to all accompanied fathers on 18 June for Father’s Day.

The Steam Day focuses on everything steam from engines and vehicles to our lovely Victorian steam launch! Maybe it is a nostalgic thing, but what’s not to love about the smell of steam and the fascinating old engineering which formed the basis of the Industrial Revolution?

The Jazz evening is a great evening. We are delighted that Savoir Faire’s sublime jazz will again be floating across our beautiful riverside location and Tipple’s Brewery will be running a beer tent too. Personally, I hope that the lady with the three tier cake stand will be there! Why not bring a picnic and make

an evening of it?

Dates for your diary – Sat 1 July is our 16th Art Challenge. Call the Museum if you want a day by the river, with expert tuition and a chance to win a prize! Sat 8 July is a charity auction of promises and items. If you have anything you can donate to the Museum, please let Nicola or Reg know. Every little helps, thank you.

Just check out our Trip Adviser reviews or keep up to date with all of our latest news at www.museumofthebroads.org.uk or Twitter @MuseumBroads or our Facebook page.

What to do when life gets boring By Beckie Grimmer from Norfolk Landscape Gardeners I’ve had plenty of hobbies in the past and, like so many people, have lost interest in pursuing them, be it because I got frustrated practicing it over and over, found something else that I was more engrossed in, or even that I was worried about what other people would think of my hobby. Was it cool? Did I look silly doing it? Were other people going to treat me differently because of it? We’re all guilty of disparaging somebody’s hobby because we think it’s weird or the person isn’t cool enough to do it. Just look at TV shows like The Big Bang Theory, whose comedy consistently depends on the idea that people who are passionate about science, trains or comic books aren’t to be taken seriously (thankfully their fantastic script and characters also helps us see otherwise).

Maintaining a fervour for learning is a truly difficult thing. Not only must you try to ignore those who make fun of you, but you need to feel like you are smart enough to learn in the first place when you might have previously been made to feel otherwise. Nobody has a set ‘level’ of intelligence, despite how we may have been made to feel in education when we were separated into our bands of the ‘bottom set’ or the ‘smart class’ - yuck! Also, not everybody has to learn at the same speed, or be good at the same things. You don’t even have to be good at something to want to learn it! I think that we should make a pact with ourselves to try and stop putting down other people who get

excited over their interests. Sure, the girl wearing a Justin Bieber t-shirt eagerly trying to win tickets to his show might seem like she should care about ‘more important’ things, or the people who race around on tiny BMX bikes might look like they’re trouble makers to you, but are they actually doing you any harm? Do you need to make them feel like their obsession isn’t worthwhile, who does that actually benefit? And if you witness anybody else doing it, genuinely ask them why they feel such a prejudice against it? We all have misconceptions, and not only is it okay to be wrong sometimes, but learning more can open up a whole lot of compassion and intrigue for something you might never have considered before. Now if you don’t think you have any interests at all, or if you have an interest but it seems like there’s too much of a barrier to pursuing it, my advice is short and simple. Get curious. Anything can be remarkable when you continually question it. I find myself trying to identify lichens growing on walls in the middle of town, or marvelling at ferns that have established themselves underneath a leaking drainpipe. It can make trips a bit slower when I stop to look at things all the time, and I recently discovered the endearing term ‘walking at the speed of botany’, but it keeps me caring about what’s around me.

My questions drive my articles and learning. I’ve researched the methods Wiccans and Pagans use plants in magic, the reasoning behind botanical names, how to make gardening more accessible to the disabled and elderly, and how plants can survive

underwater. I have quickly accumulated a plethora of books, with my wish-list ever expanding into the realms of: Paleobotany - Fossil plants Psychoactive plants - Plants that alter brain function Forensic Botany - The use of plants in criminal investigations Women in Horticulture – What have been/are their barriers? What are their successes? Marine Botany - Plants and algae that live in the sea Plant Consciousness - Are plants intelligent? Can they remember? Feel pain? Communicate? React to change? I’m just inescapably captivated by the broad and fascinating industry of horticulture.

The best method I’ve found to figure out if you’re interested in a subject is to seek out people who absolutely love it. They will be able to tell you loud and clear all of the reasons why their subject is so great and then you can decide for yourself. And even better, you don’t have to limit yourself to just one subject, ask around! A hobby or interest can quickly sweep you into a career path if you let it. Some people were quick to tell me that gardening was ‘just a hobby’ when I considered studying it, and for a while I believed them, but you’re going to be much better at a job, and live a much more fulfilling life, when you’re driven by curiosity. I’m plenty aware that horticulture is often not regarded as interesting or skilled, and I know there are countless people that could help convince you otherwise, myself included! So go on, give curiosity a try.

Focus on Conveyancing - What should you consider when buying your own home?

Questions and answers compiled by Rosemary Farman, Solicitor and Head of Residential Property, and Gaynor Hay, Property Solicitor. According to an article by BBC News published in January 2017, last year was estimated to have seen the highest number of first time buyers since 2007.

Clapham & Collinge property experts understand the difficulties that can come with buying a property, particularly for first time buyers who are new to the process so we have put together five things that a first-time buyer should consider when purchasing their first home: Rosemary Farman

1. Should I buy Freehold or Leasehold property? Owning the freehold of a property means owning the property itself and the land it stands on Wanted outright. You own the title absolutely and are known as the 'freeholder'. to rent long term in Freehold is usually Sheringham the preferred and with small garden more straightone or two bedrooms forward option. property means having a right of occupation for a certain period of time in return for paying a rent. Gaynor Hay These could be for a relatively short period of time, perhaps 10-20 years, and charge a regular monthly or quarterly rent. Alternatively, they could also be long term lease, often 90-100 years, and are bought for a lump sum, called a premium.

2. What to look for when inspecting a property and when to have a survey carried out? The seller has very limited duties to disclose matters regarding the property to you, and you should therefore always carry out a number of checks to find out as much about the property as you can. You can then make a fully informed decision as to whether to proceed and purchase the property. 3. Funding the purchase. What is involved? If you chose to take out a mortgage, your solicitor will report to you on the mortgage offer and will also act for the mortgage company during the transaction. Such loans are very likely to be secured against the property itself and the lender may have certain rights to enforce any default in payment, including applying for the property to be sold.

4. Why does my solicitor need to investigate the Title? It is important that your solicitor investigates the property title. This will reveal any covenants or restrictions to which the property is subject. For example, any rights of way or charges or restrictions that you would want the seller to remove prior to completion. Finally, any covenants that you as the owner would be subject to in relation to the use or development of the property. 5. Why should I instruct my solicitor to carry out conveyancing searches? Searches are used to identify additional information about a property that would not otherwise be known. A local search, for example, may ighlight planning permission issues or whether there are conservation areas, railway tracks or roadworks in the proximity of the property that may affect the quality of life in your new home. An environmental search will reveal, among other things, potential issues with subsidence or contaminated land.

For more details on any property related issues, please contact Clapham & Collinge Property Solicitors at our North Walsham office on 01692 660230 or Sheringham office on 01263 823398.

Brownies at Sheringham Lifeboat Station

Some of you may be thinking that the crew of the Sheringham Lifeboat are pigging out on a tasty chocolate treat. Nothing could be further from the truth!

The 2nd Sheringham Brownie Pack have, during their Easter Holidays, been carrying out bob-a job money raising events in support of Sheringham RNLI.

This culminated in a visit to the lifeboat station on the evening of 25 April, where they were given an informative tour of the station by crewman Steve Price, including actually being allowed on the lifeboat itself, which any of the Brownies will tell you is an Atlantic 85 rigid inflatable lifeboat named ‘The Oddfellows’, after the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows, who donated the cost of this boat. The Atlantic 85 is one of the new generation of RNLI B-class Atlantic inshore lifeboats, first developed by the RNLI from a design originated at Atlantic College, South Wales.

when they go out on a shout by crew member Kate Munro . As time is of the essence when there is a shout, it is important the kit is donned as quickly as possible ready for the launch and so Kate timed some of the girls putting on the kit, which proved to be quite amusing!

this year.

The 2nd Sheringham Brownie Pack has had a presence in Sheringham for about 50 years, although there have been Brownies n Sheringham for 100 years, and the 1st Sheringham Pack is indeed celebrating its centenary

During the Easter holidays the pack did many bob-a-job tasks including washing dishes, emptying dishwashers, cleaning bathrooms, polishing (upstairs and down!), dog walking and other household tasks. One of the girls was even paid to stay outside! Three of the girls went that extra mile, and more! Poppy Gibbons did a sponsored swim of 22 lengths, which raised £28 and her sister Holly, with her friend As well as being on the lifeboat, the girls were Emma Bell, did a 3 mile sponsored run around shown how to don the gear that the crews wear Felbrigg Hall which raised £37. All the girls taking part brought their hard earned cash to Sheringham in Bloom is now working toward the planting of the flower hand over to RNLI displays in all our planters around the town, and hope to have this

SHERINGHAM IN BLOOM

completed by 19 May.

Also ongoing throughout the year is the weeding and looking after of the half dozen beds and gardens that we look after, including the roundabout and Otterndorf Green. The hanging baskets will be going up around mid June.

As well as all that, we are at the time of year when we approach all our sponsors who have been so very supportive of us in the past. Sponsorship money is used solely to provide a good display of flowers in our planters throughout the year and we hope this helps to make Sheringham a truly attractive town.

If anyone is interested in sponsoring one of our displays they can start from a little as £25, and if you would rather just make a small donation this would be most gratefully received.

Thank you to everyone who supports us and we hope the coming summer will be a colourful one. Joan Thame, 01263 825242

Treasurer Tony Randall who has the task of counting and banking all that loose change! The total raised was £113.44

Brown Owl Tina Allen said “It is very important that the Brownies are in touch with the local community and as the RNLI is an important part of our community we try to do our bit for this important voluntary service”.

As such, the girls have been learning about how the RNLI works, including a session on knot tying taken by Kate Munro, who is the only female crew member at the Sheringham Station. After this close liaison, things may well change in the future! The information that the girls gleaned from their visit to the station, plus other learning such as the knot tying, goes towards gaining their Traditions and Culture Badges which they proudly display on their uniforms.

Tina continued “We also get involved in the community in other ways by getting involved in the Sheringham Carnival and we also took part in the annual Christingle Service at Christmas”.

The 2nd Sheringham Brownies meet every Tuesday from 6pm for an hour and a half at The Guide Headquarters on Cromer Road and would be pleased to welcome any new girls between the ages of 7 and 10.

AN UPLIFTING AFTERNOON FOR WEYBOURNE WI

On Wednesday 3 May, 39 members of Weybourne WI met at the village hall for a very entertaining and informative presentation by staff from specialist lingerie boutique store, Pollard and Read, which is located in Shirehall Plain, Holt.

The afternoon began with the usual welcome from Kath Griffiths, our President. She thanked the speakers for the generous raffle prizes they had donated and encouraged members to purchase raffle tickets, as part of the proceeds would be donated to our chosen charity – BREAK.

The Pollard and Read team announced that their speaker’s fee would be donated to ‘Keeping Abreast’, a Norwich based cancer charity, which was warmly applauded. Gwen Thurtle, a Sports Massage Practitioner, began by introducing ‘Starving Marvin’ her model skeleton and went on to describe how poor posture and an ill fitting bra can cause a variety of aches and pains. Marvin was used to demonstrate problem areas.

Laura and Anna had brought along some samples of stock from Pollard and Read and circulated a wide variety of bras to members for closer inspection. Volunteers were invited to step forward to help demonstrate a bra fitting and unsurprisingly there was some reluctance, until it was made clear that the bras were to be fitted onto a mannequin!

Laura explained the importance of a well fitting bra and said that customers visiting

the store should allow up to an hour for a fitting appointment. Her description of the correct way to put on a bra, including the importance of ‘wiggling and jiggling’, made us all smile.

Catherine then spoke about the Anita range of bras, which are designed in Germany. She stressed the importance of wearing a sports bra for exercise, to avoid damage to breast tissue and also described a specialised range of bras for ladies who have undergone breast surgery. She concluded by reminding us all about the importance of self-examination and regular mammogram screening. Those over 70, who are no longer invited to go along, can still ask for a test.

Celia Howe gave the vote of thanks, for what had been a very enjoyable afternoon and finally we were each given a Pollard and Read goody bag to take home.

The next meeting will be on 7 June, when members are going on a coach outing to Sandringham House, although Kath and Celia are off to Liverpool on that day for the WI AGM.

St Andrew's Ladies Association

On 25 April, eighteen ladies arrived at Paul Graves’ shops in Briston and were soon equipped with the necessary protective headgear and coats to start our tour.

Paul showed us the very large and immaculate fridges and cold stores, the enormous oven in which all the hams are cooked and he showed us how the sausages were made and packed and ready for sale in Budgens in Holt.

We looked in awe at the carcasses hanging up, some privately owned, others destined for retail trade in Norfolk.

Later Paul took us to see the farm and we made the acquaintance of some of the beautiful cattle who were happily munching clean straw, all looking content with their surroundings and we were lucky to see two little calves, one three days old and one six days old. These and their mums are so well cared for by Paul's sister in law, giving them plenty of TLC like a family.

ASK the Property Expert

As property experts we get asked a lot of questions – from both vendors and buyers. Here is a selection of this month’s5 If you have a question for our property expert find us on social media (@arnoldskeys #AskClive) or email us sheringham@arnoldskeys.com What is the difference between ‘Freehold Property’ and a ‘Leasehold Property’?

Freehold describes outright ownership of the property and land on which it stands. Leasehold is the method of owning property (usually a flat) for a fixed term but not the land on which it stands. Possession of the property will be subject to the payment of an annual ground rent. When the lease expires, ownership of the property reverts back to the freeholder.

What are the current stamp duty thresholds? Purchase price of property Rate of Stamp Duty £0 - £125,000 0% £125,001 - £250,000 2% £250,001 - £925,000 5% £925,001 - £1.5 million 10% Why do we exchange contracts? Until you exchange contracts neither side has any legal obligation to purchase or sell the property. Both buyer and seller sign identical contracts, but only when they are formally exchanged by the solicitors does the deal become legally binding.

Later we were taken to the Congregational Church which was warm and where a delicious lunch was arranged for us, a selection of sandwiches, fresh cream scones, sausage rolls, pastries, tea and coffee and finally we were able to go to the shop and buy from the wonderful selection of food on offer.

Thank you Paul for a very interesting and enjoyable outing to this hard working family business started by his grandfather during the Second World War

Our June Meetings are as follows : 13 June - AGM for all members, 7.30pm 27 June - Suzie Lay will talk to us entitled ‘A Walk with the West Runton Mammoth’ at 7.30pm This will be an OPEN MEETING and anyone interested in the subject is most warmly invited to join us - this will be a very interesting talk so bring your family and friends. Haddock Benedict

This month's recipe is provided by Joe Stacey, demi-chef de partie at the Dales. It includes a bonus recipe for English Muffin. Try it and see what you think! Ingredients 1 block of butter 4 egg yolk 1tsp white wine vinegar 2 haddock fillets

Handful of spinach 2x eggs 1x half of savoury muffin

Method To make your hollandaise 1. Firstly melt the block of butter so the butter and milk separate and pour of the butter. This clarifies the butter. 2. Secondly prepare a bain marie of hot water. Take 4 eggs and separate the yolks and put into a mixing bowl. 3. Add a tsp of white wine vinegar to the yolks and mix together. Then place the bowl above the bain marie. 4. Next is the tricky and very important part. Very slowly and gently pour the butter into the yolk and vinegar ixture and mix vigorously until it starts to form a creamy consistency. Lastly, season to taste. 5. This is now ready to serve. Prepare this before

starting the rest of the dish.

1. Prepare a shallow pan of milk. This is to poach your haddock fillet. Bring this to a simmer. 2. Next, boil a pan of water to poach your eggs. When the milk is simmering place the haddock in the milk to poach. 3. When the haddock is nearly cooked, Bring the pan of water to a simmer and crack your eggs in to poach. While the eggs and fish are cooking, pre- heat a frying pan. 4. When the pan is hot, place a knob of butter in the pan and wilt the spinach with a little bit of seasoning. When the spinach is wilted, place onto a doubled up sheet of kitchen towel to drain excess oil. 5. Remove the eggs and the haddock from both the water and milk when cooked and also place on doubled up kitchen towel to drain excess liquid. 6. To plate, place half of one of your homemade muffins on a plate then top with your wilted spinach. On top of this place the poached haddock then the poached eggs on top. Finish with a generous helping of hollandaise over the top of the dish. Alternately to homemade muffins, you can buy English muffins and just toast before serving.

English Muffin

Ingredients (Makes 8) 150g strong white bread flour plus extra for flouring 6g fast-action yeast 6g salt 15g caster sugar 15g softened butter, cut into small pieces 1 medium free-range egg lightly beaten 170ml oz milk Oil for greasing 15g semolina or polenta, extra for dusting

The Weekend by Michael Palin

The Weekend is a superb comedy play written by prolific writer/actor Michael Palin, renowned as a member of the legendary Monty Python team, and more recently in his BBC TV travel/history documentaries. Michael Palin has very kindly sent his ‘good wishes’ to The Sheringham Players.

Method 01263 824555 1. Firstly tip the flour into a mixing bowl. Sprinkle the yeast on one side of the flour and 01263 838383 the salt into the other side of the flour. Add the sugar, butter, egg and milk, then mix all the 01263 579579 ingredients together to form a soft dough. 2. Next move the mixture onto a lightly floured surface and then knead for 10 minutes or until soft and stretchy. 3. Now lightly grease a large with your oil and the place the dough in the bow. Cover this and leave to prove for an hour or until the dough has doubled in size. 4. Dust your work surface with a mixture of semolina/ polenta and flour. 5. Tip the dough onto the work surface and roll till it is roughly 2.5cm thick. 6. Lightly dust two baking trays with half of the semolina or polenta. 7. Using a 9cm/ 3 ½ oz straight sided cutter, cut out eight muffin. Place four muffins, evenly spaced apart on each of the dusted baking trays. Dust the remaining semolina or polenta over the top of the muffins. 8. Leave to prove for another 30 minutes. 9. Preheat the hot plate or a heavy-based frying pan on the hob to a very low heat. Griddle the muffins for approximately 5-6 minutes, then flip over and griddle for another 5-6 minutes on the other side. This is a staple on our breakfast menus which is a luxurious way to start the day. Also a lovely alternative to have at dinner time.

Written in 1994, the play was first staged at the Strand Theatre in London’s West End. The role of Stephen Febble was played by Richard Wilson, known for his role as Victor Meldrew of One Foot in the Grave fame. Richard Wilson has kindly sent ‘good wishes’ for the play.

Set in Suffolk, present day and centres around the cantankerous, world-weary and generally ‘crabby’ – this describes Stephen Febble (played by Graham Blyth). All he wants is a quiet life but, to his horror, his long-suffering wife Virginia (played by Ruth Elliott) fills the house with guests for the weekend … his daughter, gormless son-in-law, precocious granddaughter and incontinent dog, together with his best friend, his wife and her chiropodist lover all turn up for dinner. Exasperated, frustrated and irritated, Stephen responds in his normal fashion, reaching for the whisky, in large amounts, and the sarcasm, in even larger amounts.

Michael Palin has given lots to laugh at. It is a play with a thread of black as well as light humour, with surprising revelations. If you want straight comedic entertainment, it’s there, but with a poignancy that gives the script much depth - this play is unmissable! The Manchester Unity of Oddfellows local branches met with representatives of Sheringham RNLI in the Mo Museum in Sheringham to present them with a cheque for £500. Mel Richmond, the Noble Grand of the Trafalgar Lodge based in North Walsham, presented the cheque to Senior Helmsman David Hagan. Brian Farrow, the Lifeboat Operations Manager thanked Mel and the Manchester Unity of Oddfellows for their continued support of the RNLI in Sheringham, not only in providing funding for all the lifeboats in Sheringham since 1961, but also for re-purchasing the lifeboats of Sheringham after decommissioning so that they can be displayed in the unique Mo Museum. There are three lodges in the Norwich District,

City of Norwich, Trafalgar (in North Walsham) and Waveney (Beccles). These three lodges have a total membership of around 1700 people who give donations to a variety of charities, including East Anglian Air Ambulance, Macmillan Nurses, East Anglian Children’s Hospice and National Osteoporosis Society.

The connection between The Oddfellows and the RNLI in Sheringham came about through Henry ‘Downtide’ West, Coxswain of the first Sheringham lifeboat purchased with funds donated by The Oddfellows and called ‘The Manchester Unity of Oddfellows’. Henry was involved in the fund raising for the lifeboat and became the Grand Master of the Oddfellows in 1966/1967. Maggi Winter, who is the Immediate Past Grand Master, said “The Oddfellows is a global organisation with branches in far flung places such as Australia, the USA and the Dominican Republic,

Maggi and husband David Winter, the Grand Master of the Norwich District, were married in 1967 and so celebrate their Golden Wedding this year, quite an achievement nowadays.

‘The Manchester Unity of Oddfellows’ can be viewed in the Mo Museum in Sheringham, along with other former Sheringham lifeboats, fishing boats and other local heritage displays.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

The weather could hardly be described as ‘spring like’ for the Spring Sale on 6 May, although we did raise £650.35 for the cats in care. We would like to thank our volunteers for giving their time to help on the day, and our supporters who ventured out on such a horrible day. A special thank you to Andrea, Bren and Jennie who had been very busy prior to the sale making cakes, jams and all the lovely craft items. Their stalls would have been quite bare without their contributions.

How quickly situations do change. Recently, we actually had an empty pen and no waiting list of cats to come in. This most enviable situation arose because several of the cats went to new homes within a very short period of time. However, we are now back to our normal state, with all pens full and a waiting list that continues to grow each day.

Nutsey, one of the cats at present still with us, came in because his owner had died and he had been abandoned. This poor little lad had very sore eyes and was constantly rubbing them, which only made the situation worse. Initial treatment involved eye drops and steroids but unfortunately they did not improve, in fact the eyelids became more swollen, which resulted in his eyelashes irritating his eyes. David, his vet, decided that an operation was needed to resolve the situation, so off to the vets once more Nutsey went. Initially, he continued to rub the eyes and further medication was needed. However, once Stephanie saw that some of the dissolvable stitches were still in place, David removed these and his eyes are now looking much better. He is still on medication and we are hoping that he will get a clean bill of health when he goes for his next appointment.

help with another site where someone ‘inherited’ 15 (a later count brought the total to 20) unneutered cats. Apart from one, which has gone missing, all have now been neutered. As 13 of these cats were female, if they had all produced a litter of four kittens (which is an average number), the lady could have had an extra 52 mouths to feed before the end of the summer, by which time the adults could have been pregnant again!

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter Nutsey, when he first arrived in care your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

Two of the sites where cats are being caught and neutered are now down to the last few cats, which will make life a lot better for them as there will be no additional mouths looking for a meal, but also allows females to enjoy life without maternal responsibilities. We have also been able to

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

All change at Norwich City by Joel Lodge, our Football Correspondent

The championship season came to a close on Sunday 7th May as Norwich defeated QPR in their final game of the season.

it was an opportunity for the club to start a new chapter with the new structure in place; as canary fans said goodbye to one of their most loyal servants over the past 7 years, John Ruddy.

In what has been an overall poor season Norwich fans can look forward to hopefully exciting times ahead, as Stuart Webber and Steve Stone plan for a large summer rebuild as Norwich try and get back in the Premier League.

Watching the final game of the season it was frustrating to see the clear quality we have as Norwich thumped QPR 4-0 on mid Sunday and

Earlier that week the club had announced 7 players would be released over the close season and those names being: John Ruddy, Ryan Bennett, Steven Whittaker, Sebastien Bassong, Youssouf Mulumbu, Kyle Lafferty and Michael Turner.

The surprise name on that list is John Ruddy, who has been a prominent figure over the last

7 years, however he will move onto pastures new come June 30th and was given the farewell he deserved against QPR.

Ruddy captained the side in his final appearance as he put in a MOM performance with a few good saves in the game as well as interacting with the crow in what will be a fond memory in years to come.

Although it is sad to see John go it is something I feel had to be done as Stuart Webber prepares for the appointment of the new head coach and overhaul of the squad.

Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club

‘Listen With Mother’, a short radio programme aimed at the very young, may have vanished from the airwaves long ago but for David Clayton, our Speaker at the Probus Club Lunch on Tuesday 2 May, it was a critical point in what became a lifelong career in broadcasting.

Long before television made inroads into every household, radio provided the main external contact with music, drama and news, and the wireless was a focal point for most families.

David graduated from ‘Listen With Mother’ to become hooked as a teenager on the music provided by the BBC, but this organisation was restricted in the amount of ‘needle time’ it was allowed for popular music so that most ‘pop’ music was played by bands and orchestras instead of the real thing - frustrating for the keen teenage listener!

As a consequence of this restriction a number of offshore pirate radio stations became established avoiding immediate government control. Radio Caroline was among them and found in David, and many million others, a ready listener.

Following a spell as a much sought after DJ, David joined the BBC who introduced local radio, including Radio Norfolk. Over the years David Clayton became part of the backbone of Radio Norfolk, recently retiring as its Head of Broadcasting, and well known to listeners as the presenter of Treasure Quest on Sunday mornings. His talk, full of amusing anecdotes, was a breath of fresh air and greatly appreciated by the large gathering of members, wives and guests, and a warm and well deserved vote of thanks was given by Ken Macnish.

Our next meeting on Tuesday 6 June at The Links Hotel, West Runton, will be the Annual General Meeting following our usual lunch.

If you are a retired or nearly retired professional or business man and would like to join us at any of our future meetings you will be warmly welcomed. Please contact our Lunch Secretary, Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or have a look at our website candsprobus.club for more information.

SAVE THE DATE - Zumbathon 2017

presented by Wyn Nurse, Joe Howard-Brown, Fiona Riley and Sarah Yendel This year our Zumbathon will be held on the Lees in Sheringham. This is the 3rd year for this amazing event and we want to make it even bigger this year. Last year we raised £1,100 for local charities. This year our two charities are Epilepsy Research and Sheringham Carnival.

We would like as many people as possible to come along to the Lees in Sheringham on Saturday 8 July 6pm - 9pm. Can you imagine dancing as the sun goes down to the great Latin sounds of Zumba and Zumba Gold! You don’t have to be a great dancer as we aim to have fun and laughter all the way, so come along and join the party and have a wiggle and a giggle.

If you are interested you can just turn up and it will be £10 per person or if you prefer sponsor forms available from Wyn Nurse edwinanurse@hotmail.co.uk or contact Wyn on 07570 104671

So come and join the Zumba Family on 8 July for a fun time!
