Swim Safe - don’t get caught in a Rip
Advice issued by the RNLI Happisburgh following the tragic events at Sea Palling last year. Rip Currents are strong currents running out to sea. They can take you from the shallows very quickly and leave you out of your depth.
If you are caught in a Rip: • Stay calm, don’t panic • If you can stand, wade – don’t try to swim • If you have an inflatable or board, keep hold of it to help you float • Raise your hand and shout for help loudly • Don’t swim directly against the Rip or you will get exhausted • Swim parallel to the beach until free of the Rip, then make for the shore For more information on Rip Currents go to www.ripcurrents.co.uk

Holt Rotary provides Tea for the Admiral
Holt and District Rotary’s fundraising to provide an Admiral Nurse for our area has been boosted by a garden tea party held on 9 July hosted by Greg and Jan Cooper, attended by over 130 people and raising over £800. Two gardens were open, the rain kept away, large quantities of cake were consumed and the plant stall did brisk business.

‘Shout, Shout, Up with your Song’....
and so with the words of the almost forgotten suffragette composer, Dame Ethel Smyth, Cantamus Choir, under the musical direction of Philip Adams, gave a captivating concert in Itteringham Village Hall. Raising a magnificent £800 towards the Save Itteringham Village Shop fund, the evening of music and song celebrated many female composers. The audience were treated to the beautiful Litany by Isabella Leonarda, rallying songs of the suffragettes, and Judith Weir’s ‘Michael’s Stratspey and Reel’ written for and performed by the renowned composer and pianist, Michael Finnissy.
If you enjoy singing, come and join Cantamus Choir. Our non-auditioned choir welcomes all voices and even if you have little previous experience, it won’t be long before you are singing your heart out with us.

Inter School Poetry Slam
The inter-school poetry slam was held on Monday 3 July at the Little Theatre in Sheringham.
Four local primary schools, Langham, Holt, Sheringham and Roughton took part and each had three teams of children who performed the poems that they had composed. This was the culmination of a project that involved workshops by Molly Naylor and mini-slams that had been held at each school to determine which teams went forward for the grand slam.
The judges were Debbie Thompson (Director of The Little Theatre), David Bull (Operations Manager of the Holt Festival), Alan Leventhall (Community Librarian for Fakenham and Holt), and Emma Corlett (County Councilor for Norwich)
The prize winners were as follows : • Best Performance - Holt Community Primary School • Best Writing - Langham Village School • Most Original Ideas - St Mary's Endowed CEVA Primary School, Roughton • Highest Scoring Team (for performance
MACKENZIE HOTELS.COM
and writing) - Leaf of Ideas, Sheringham Community Primary School • Highest Scoring School (for performance and writing) Sheringham Community Primary School There were also some individual prizes for outstanding achievement.
Phil Barrett, Chairman of FALCON commented "What can I say? This morning’s Grand Slam was a fantastic success, on every level – the confident performances of the children, the atmosphere in the theatre, the sense of occasion and of being in a theatre, the friendly supportive understanding of the children towards each other, and their different schools, the sense of rising to the occasion, the inclusive and perceptive judging and prize giving, and not least the superb performance by Luke Wright, which would have been the envy of any performance poetry programme. I hope very much that we can find a way of making this event happen again next year, and perhaps of involving even more schools

Actor has two roles - and a baby - in the wings
Actor Joey Herzfeld has plenty to think about as he takes to the stage for a busy summer season at Norfolk seaside theatre. For as well as having two plays to learn, rehearse and perform at Sheringham Little Theatre, the Norwich man is expecting the birth of a baby daughter during the summer drama season. She is due on 18 August – sandwiched in a gap between two plays when Joey will be playing troubled father Stone in The Business of Murder, and holiday hotel guest Stanley in Bedfull of Foreigners.
you learn your craft playing lots of different parts. It was only when we moved to Norfolk, where Nikki’s parents live, that I discovered Sheringham was one of the few places that still do it.

“It’s tricky timing – but I have wanted to do repertory forever and was delighted to get asked by the Little Theatre. I am happy about getting the roles, and about the birth of my second child,” said Joey, 38, who lives in Norwich’s Golden Triangle. “We are hoping things will work out timing wise – but if not my wife Nikki has a stand-in birthing partner lined up.” He is an experienced actor, singer and composer, whose work has included shows at the Edinburgh Fringe, Norfolk and Norwich Festival, outdoor Shakespeare, comedy and fronting his own band Joey Herzfeld and his So-Called Friends. “Doing rep is a lot of actors’ dream – because
The Revival - Scared to Death (August 11th22nd), A Bedfull of Foreigners (August 24thSeptember 5th) and Noel and Gertie (September 7th-13th).
“Theatre director Debbie Thompson is old friends with my neighbour and asked me to drop in to talk about the season. I nearly didn’t go because my mum broke her wrist the day before, but I did, and was thrilled to get two meaty parts,” he added.
Debbie added “We are pleased to have Joey, whose talent was on our doorstep, join the summer drama cast, and the theatre team is, in turn, looking forward to joining him celebrate the birth of his baby.”
Joey cut his acting teeth while doing a history degree and MA in art history at Oxford. Partner Nikki is a graphic designer and the couple already have a son Ezra, three.
The summer drama season at Sheringham Little Theatre runs from 21 July to 13 September and includes a thriller, murder mystery, comedy and elegant wit.
The line-up is Intimate Exchanges (July 21st29th), The Business of Murder (August 1st -9th),

Boxtree Productions are coming to North Lodge Park in Cromer on 20 August this year with their fantastic new musical adaptation of 'Wind In The Willows'.
Boxtree Productions have been touring open air theatre since 2014 and have produced musical versions of 'The Three Musketeers', 'Around The World In 80 Days' and 'The Scarlet Pimpernel'. This year they are producing their own version of Kenneth Grahame's classic tale, 'Wind In The Willows'. North Lodge Park is a gem in the heart of Cromer, a small, but perfectly formed, quintessential sea-side cliff top park, which is a perfect venue for open air theatre. What better way to while away a balmy summer's afternoon than watching a fantastic tale of rivers, motor-cars and picnics told in the energetic Boxtree Productions style, in this beautiful park.
Join Mole as she throws down her broom and heads out to find adventure. She meets Ratty, Badger and Toad, whose exploits cause all manner of trouble. When the conniving and criminal Weasels set their sights on Toad Hall it's up to Mole, Ratty, Toad and Badger to take back the Hall and learn the Weasels a lesson. Featuring lots of fast-paced fun, excitement and original music, there is something for the whole family to enjoy.
James Franklin, managing director of Boxtree Productions said “we are so excited to be bringing a show to North Lodge Park. It's going to be a fantastic afternoon with a great atmosphere. North Lodge Park is an ideal spot for Open Air Theatre and we are really proud to be offered the chance to work with the Boxtree team bringing this show to Cromer. Last year's performance of Goldilocks set a high standard, and we're confident that Boxtree are up to the job!” said Samantha Annison, Chair of the Friends of North Lodge Park.
The audience can arrive from 12.30pm and are encouraged to bring a picnic and a blanket or low backed chair, and soak up the atmosphere of this incredible show.
Advance tickets are on sale at NorthLodgePark.org.uk - tickets are extremely limited, so early booking is recommended. 'Wind In The Willows' will be at North Lodge Park on Sunday 20 August. The show will start at 2pm and will be approximately 2 hours long including an interval.

Vee Zappia and Debbie Mason organised another Open Air Yoga event at Felbrigg Hall Estate to celebrate the summer solstice, which is when the sun reaches its peak in the sky creating the longest day and shortest night. It is a time to join together and celebrate.
This was a charity event in aid of The Ellen Mezzetti Memorial Fund for Epilepsy Research UK. A total of £400 was raised in just one hour.
Ellen’s grandmother attended and
gave a small speech explaining about the charity. This was very emotional for her and touched everyone's hearts - it was a truly magical practise in surroundings so beautiful.

Founded 70 years ago in Hanover Square, the choir continues to explore adventurous repertoire both familiar and new under their Musical Director, Tori Longdon. The choir are excited to be returning to North Norfolk for their annual escape from London, having visited Wells-next-the-Sea in 2013. Tickets are £5 and can be purchased on the night. ‘Posh’ refreshments will be served.
There is something for everyone at the show, so if you grow vegetables, fruit, flowers or pot plants, cook, make preserves or produce handicraft items this is a great chance to enter into friendly competition with your friends and neighbours.
There are many who visit flower shows and are surprised to see that the exhibits appear to be no better than what is growing in their own gardens, or what they have baked that very week, or with the photographs they have just taken. The trouble is that they have left it all at home and therefore, have no chance of proving its merits. So don’t hesitate, get hold of a schedule and have a go at entering our show this August. You can call for a schedule by phoning 01263 821463

Britain’s Most Expensive Divorce Lawyer and the Need for Pre-Nuptial Agreements
The Daily Mail recently ran an article on Ayesha Vardag who acted for the German heiress Katrin Radmacher in Neale Grearson 2010. This was the case that protected Miss Radmacher’s £100 million fortune from her ex-husband Nicolas Granatino because of a Pre-Nuptial Agreement they had entered into. This was a radical change in British divorce law since when the Courts have been much more willing to uphold Pre-Nuptial Agreements.
With the rate of divorces in this country now approaching 1 in 2 the significance and future importance of Pre-Nuptial Agreements has never been greater. For a couple getting married at an early stage in their lives when their financial positions are roughly equal they might conclude that a Pre-Nuptial Agreement is not necessary. For those that might be entering into a second marriage or have inherited wealth earlier in their life Pre-Nuptial Agreements become very important and arguably vital. The Daily Mail quotes Ayesha as saying that “it is like thinking you don’t need fire insurance because your house won’t ever burn down” and that is a fair analogy. The discussion between an engaged couple about having a Pre-Nuptial Agreement may be a difficult one but arguably a Pre-Nuptial Agreement should be part of the pre wedding planning list along with booking a venue and ordering flowers. Is that an over materialistic approach or reality?
The increase in the divorce rate is not necessarily because marriages are less stable. The reality however is that everyone is living longer and during a marriage people do fall out of love with one another. Each (or both) spouses change and it is not an admission of failure to accept that. Making a Will is now accepted as essential (although scarily not everybody does have a Will). Lasting Powers of Attorney are catching up but are still not as widely used as should be the case. Pre-Nuptial Agreements are the next big growth area because in very uncertain

times and the fear of what might happen on a divorce they are likely to become an even more essential part of pre-marriage planning. In fact there is an argument to say that with a Pre-Nuptial Agreement a couple should be even more confident about getting married as the fear about what might happen on a divorce and the financial repercussions is going to be safeguarded against.
The work of divorce lawyers could reduce substantially if everybody had a Pre-Nuptial Agreement. Rather like lawyers earning more money from disputes over Wills where they are not drawn up correctly (or there being no Will at all). Without a Pre-Nuptial Agreement the danger is that a divorcing couple are left in the hands of a Judge with ultimate discretion and no guarantee as to how such things as inherited wealth or pre-owned assets should be taken into account. Pre-Nuptial Agreements are not yet completely enforceable and there is still no legislation to give them formal status but if a Pre-Nuptial Agreement is objectively “fair” and the following three “rules” are carried out the starting point should be that the Pre-Nuptial Agreement is enforceable and it would be for the person opposing it to show good reason why it should not be upheld:
1. Both of the couple take independent advice from a Solicitor. 2. There is an exchange of financial information so that each knows what the other is worth. 3. The Agreement is not entered into too close to the marriage and usually this should be more than 28 days beforehand.
There will always need to be provision for a change or at least a review should there be a fundamental alteration in the situation. In particular if the couple have children that could be a “deal changer” so there does need to be careful drafting of the Agreement.

Flowers for foodies
food, have resorted to using poisonous flowers, with some even making it onto a wedding cake!
By Beckie Grimmer from Norfolk Landscape Gardeners
There’s a fun new craze all about making your food not only taste great, but look picture perfect too. People are finding ingenious ways to bring that flare and extra colour, and a large number of innovative home-chefs are decorating with edible flowers.
Now, of course, eating flowers is certainly not a new concept, but I’ve been seeing some great ways to incorporate them into your dinner party, or simply posh up your granola to give you a morning perk.
Putting flowers into ice cubes preserves their colour and shape and look fantastic dropped into a celebratory glass of something fizzy. This works well with the cucumber flavoured borage flowers in some chilled Pimms. Some people might choose to save time by simply floating fresh flowers atop a punch bowl.
Something I love to make is crystallised flowers,

Speeches took place in the School’s beautiful Theatre in the Woods, attended by pupils, parents, governors and staff. Head of School, Zara Raslan and Deputy Head of School, George Jefford both gave speeches and closed them with a wonderful musical performance. Gresham’s Chairman of Governors, Andrew Martin Smith announced that Cromer-born and former Greshm’s pupil, Sir James Dyson, would become a governor representing the Old Greshamian Club.
Douglas Robb, Gresham’s Headmaster said “We feel deeply honoured that HRH The Princess Royal has agreed to become a Governor of Gresham's in her capacity as Prime Warden of The Fishmongers' Company. She follows in the footsteps of her father and Gresham’s Patron, The Duke of Edinburgh who has been a Governor previously.

St Andrew's Ladies Association
We are very grateful to all the ladies who gave their time to ensure that the Flower Festival at St Andrew’s Church was a wonderful week - the flower arrangers gave us the most amazing display and the flowers were just so beautiful.
Thank you also to the ladies who helped on the Ladies Association stall which was a great success.
The Festival raised over ÂŁ9,000. A donation of ten percent this year will be given to Sheringham Age Concern.
We have now come to the end until September and we wish our members and friends a happy summer with special thanks to the ladies who have arranged our meetings.
We return on 12 September with a Bring and Share Buffet supper and we welcome any ladies who would like to join us at 7.30pm. Sheringham Independent 468

somewhat embellish the story, and photos were taken! So it continued with Aussies asking for photos and me sweating in suit and chain. Ros took it very well and giggled! The number of people we met who love North Norfolk was very rewarding. I have to say that it was a great relief to fall into the Navy Club where we stayed and have a much-needed drink! What a shame that the weekend was spoiled by the thoughtless idiots on London Bridge. It did go to show, however, what a wonderful spirit
we have in this country of ours, with the actions of selfless people of all origin and colour to stop this outrage. So now back to reality. The dates for our Surgery firstly. These will be 21 July, 25 August, 29 September and 20 October. All on a Friday and all from 12non to 1pm. Come and see us, even just to throw things or have a good moan! We don't just appear at election time and can actually get things done! Let's hope the glorious summer continues. Regards Richard Shepherd Chairman NNDCl Dist. Councillor Sheringham South

The Art Deco Traveller visits Weybourne WI
On 5 July, 30 WI members and two guests met for a lively presentation by The Art Deco Traveller, Genista Davidson.
built the first Odeon cinema in 1935. Within a year, 250 had been built.
There were three popular styles of architecture during this period and Genista had many photographs showing examples of each. These included Burgh Island Hotel at Bigbury on Sea (Classic Art Deco), The Carreras Cigarette Factory in London (Egyptian Revival) and the De La Warr Pavilion at Bexhill on Sea (Streamline Modern).
Genista wore an authentic Art Deco outfit and brought along a display of several items from her home, which is furnished and decorated in the Art Deco style.
Genista is passionate about this period and has written many newspaper articles on the subject and also six books. Many of these inspired by her travels. She is also a teacher of Social History.
During the 1930s the design of cars, trains and the Airstream caravan were all influenced by the Streamline Modern style. However, the Art Deco period was not actually named as such until the 1960s.
She explained that the Art Deco period lasted from around 1918-1939 and influenced many things, not only architecture. The 1925 Exposition of Modern International and Decorative Arts, which was held in Paris, helped to spread the popularity.
It was a very entertaining afternoon and the vote of thanks was given by Pauline Stickland.
Genista is a great fan of Lidos, as these epitomise the Art Deco period and has visited many. She was recently invited to attend the re-opening of Saltdean Lido and wore one of her 20 knitted swimming outfits and a vintage swimming hat for the occasion.
Genista talked of many people who were influential at this time, including Rene Lalique and Clarice Cliff. Also Oscar Deutsch, who

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
On 9th July we had another very enjoyable day at the Hog Roast at Stephanie’s home. As it was a lovely day the party tents this year provided welcome relief from the sun rather than, as on some occasions, offering shelter from the rain. It was lovely to share the day with our friends and fellow cat lovers and for them to have the opportunity to see some of the cats in our care. We would like to thank all the volunteers who worked so hard to make the day a success but especially Stephanie and Andrea on the catering front and Kenny and Brian for putting the party tents up.
When responding to requests for help with neutering, we often get calls from people who have purchased their pet via one of the websites offering animals for sale. We hear of instances where people have taken a cat or kitten into their homes only to find that they have health issues as the animals have not been to the vets for a health check. They also find that the kitten is much younger than they were advised and should still be with its mother. We also see cats and kittens for sale at ridiculous prices because of their colour, breed, etc, while an identical cat or kitten may be offered for much less because the owner has not been able to find it a new home. For those looking for a pedigree pet, I would suggest they make sure they see the relevant paperwork giving the animal’s parentage and ensure that they receive the registration forms confirming its pedigree. For all other cats please bear in mind that most charities charge the same adoption fee irrespective of colour or breed. Cats’ Protection Advocacy Department, together with other animal welfare charities, are working hard to try and get changes in the law, which is one of the reasons we do monitor the activities taking place on these sites and can advise them accordingly.
Unfortunately, we get many calls from people needing to re-home their cats and we do help if we can. However, as our pens are usually full and we always have a waiting list, it is highly unlikely that we will be able to take thecat in straight away or, in some instances, because of the timescale, not at all. Although Stephanie always explains the situation in detail and tries her best to help, either by putting the cat on our waiting list or offering alternative solutions, some people can only see Bailey came into care the situation from their point of view and can be very rude. Please bear in mind if you are ever in when her owner moved and could not this situation, that we are volunteers and there is only so much we can do. take her with her
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 it (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) call Stephanie 01692 535858. Or visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

Morgan the Railway Cat on the North Norfolk Railway Many of you will be familiar with the Children's Play carriage on Sheringham Station.
This was designed as a free attraction for young visitors to the North Norfolk Railway and last year had a makeover. The engine of the play train inside the carriage has been renamed 'Morgan' and has a super 'Morgan’ face on the front. Morgan is the Poppy Line's very own story book cat and we are proud to announce that our long awaited book, Morgan the Railway Cat, has been published, thanks to the kind sponsorship of two volunteers.
The story was written by a railway volunteer and illustrated by Colin Wyatt of 'The Poddington Pea' books and TV series. The book is already on sale in the three station shops and there will be an official launch of the book in the form of Special Fun Days on 19 and 20 August.
These will take place at Weybourne station from 10.30.am until 3pm. You will be able to meet Morgan and the characters from the book, all of whom work on the railway. You can visit and recognise everything from the pictures in the book. There will be games to play and things to make and cartoon drawing with Colin and good things to eat too.

Weather with Ned Nimbus The past three months fulfilled its billing as 'a mixed bag’.
Overall, temperatures here came out about average, with the warmer spells being counter balanced by a lot of colder winds off the sea, being brought about by higher pressure in the North Atlantic.
Rainfall also came in bursts, with long spells with no rain at all. Thunder was not prominent - even after the hot spell in June storms were quite isolated.
The next three months will keep the 'mixed bag' theme going but from about mid-July, higher pressure will stick around for longer, so we can go into the summer with optimism. Ned Nimbus
