Norfolk photographer is the overall winner of this year’s International Photographer of the Year exhibition

The International Photographer of the Year exhibition returns to the National Trust’s Sheringham Park for a third year this autumn, featuring more images than ever before.

Located in the tranquil surroundings of the Bower Garden, over 40 images from around the world will be on display, as part of this year’s exhibition. The overall winner though is a Norfolk photographer, for his autumnal image taken in Snowdonia.

Norfolk photographer is the overall winner of this year’s International Photographer of the Year exhibition

Continued from front cover... “With thousands of fantastic entries from all over the world, it was a real honour to discover that the judges had chosen my image as the overall winner,” Lee Acaster from Diss revealed. “The shot itself was taken on a rainy autumn day. I noticed there were a few leaves left on a blackened birch tree, which were highlighted against the inky water of the lake behind. Being quite abstract in nature, the image won’t appeal to everybody, but I was thrilled that the judges liked it as much as I did. I think the ambiguity of the subject, it’s not immediately clear what you are looking at, was a big part of its appeal to them. “There is no substitute for seeing photographs printed on a large scale to appreciate them properly, so I’m really looking forward to seeing the exhibition in the wonderful surroundings of Sheringham Park. There can hardly be a better place to appreciate nature photography.” The exhibition also includes the ‘Breathing Spaces’ category, which is sponsored by the National Trust. This year it was won by Anil Sud for his Mountain Fog picture taken in Colorado. Runners-up images in this category also show landscapes from Derbyshire to Italy.

This year’s competition also features a new category on Humphry Repton, who designed Sheringham Park and stated it was his most favourite work. The 2018 exhibition will display the winning images from this category, as part of the celebration of Repton’s life - 200 years on from his death.

Curtis McGlinchey, from International Garden Photographer of the Year said “We’re thrilled to be returning to Sheringham Park with this anniversary exhibition, which will be the largest outdoor display at any venue to date. Our relationship with Sheringham Park continues to grow as we work together to champion the beauty and importance of plants, gardens and green spaces, both in the UK and around the world.’’ The free exhibition opened at the National Trust’s Sheringham Park on Saturday 2 September, for two months and can be viewed daily from dawn to dusk.

If you would like the proceeds of your Coffee Morning - or any other fundraising event that you are holding for Macmillan - to stay in North Norfolk, please contact Diane Evans 01263 823889 or diane@opengolfclubcompettions.co.uk for more information. Scam alert: Warning sounded over firms that charge for council-tax appeals

North Norfolk District Council reminds residents that application process is free

Residents across North Norfolk are being warned to avoid paying private companies that charge for appealing against council-tax bands. North Norfolk District Council has received reports of people being asked to hand over their bank details by these third parties – all for providing a service that is actually free for householders. Employing one of these companies does not help or influence the outcome of an appeal, and is a complete waste of money.

All types of garden maintenance including garden clearance and tree work with our own mini digger, dumper & chipper. We are also one of the biggest suppliers of railway sleepers ROG DQG QHZ 7KRXVDQGV LQ VWRFN FXWWLQJ DQG ÂżWWLQJ VHUYLFHV DYDLODEOH :H KDYH D IXOO \DUG RI WUHDWHG WLPEHU DQG GHFNLQJ Sheds any size made to order, free erection.

For a very competitive and no obligation quote on all types of garden work call:Steve on 01692 406020 Mobile 07917 692291

What makes matters even worse in this instance is that some of these third parties are trying to impose a fee simply for filling out a form, regardless of whether the application to lower the council-tax band proves successful or not.

Cllr Wyndham Northam, NNDC Cabinet member for Revenues and Benefits, said “If you are a council-tax payer and you want to appeal your council-tax band, it is easy to do this yourself and there is absolutely no charge for doing so. “Some private operators are very clever at selling their services, but signing up with them means paying an unnecessary fee and receiving absolutely nothing in return that council-tax payers can’t do themselves. NNDC warns people to be wary of all cold-callers, especially those demanding bank details. People should never hand over their bank details or other personal information in situations such as this and should always make further inquiries if in any doubt.

To apply for a council-tax re-evaluation, visit www.gov.uk/council-tax-appeals/challengeyour-band or call 03000 501501.

the ozone, and even, in some cases, to buy bottled seawater, sold for its healthy qualities!

Alistair took us through the history of jetties and piers in Cromer (with excellent illustrations), starting in 1780 with a jetty which was more of a short breakwater; this was followed by various jetties and piers, each time longer than the previous ones, leading up to the construction of the present pier in 1901. There was initially a bandstand where the pavilion is now. It was interesting at the same time to learn something of the history of the seafront and of the buildings nearby. Alistair showed in his excellent presentation how much the pier has been part of Cromer’s history, and he was thanked by Chairman, Jack Broughton.

Have a cuppa all in aid of Macmillan

The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning brought to you by Macmillan Cancer Support returns on Friday 29 September. Having raised a total of £29.5 million in 2016, this year’s event aims to raise even more vital money for people living with cancer.

Purdy’s Tea Room based at Woodgate Nursery in Aylsham will be hosting a Macmillan Coffee Day on Friday 29 September, which includes a charity raffle to win a hamper full of tea room and nursery goodies (worth over £50). Pop along from 10am to 4pm and catch up over a cuppa, enjoy some gorgeous treats – and help raise money so that no one will have to face cancer alone.

All hot drink proceeds sold throughout the day will be donated to the charity, with the tearoom also offering Macmillan themed cakes. Lisa Smith, tea room manager, comments ‘This is our fifth coffee day hosted at Purdy’s and with every coffee slurped, crumb dropped and conversation shared we will continue to help Macmillan support people affected by cancer’. The coffee morning will once again be sponsored by Calypso Coffee.

It’s a Dibley Christmas!

Local actor Greg Pope, who works in Cromer, is reprising his role of Frank Pickle, in The Vicar of Dibley Christmas at Sheringham Little Theatre this November. Greg and almost all the original cast are continuing the story of the Village of Dibley from the original production in 2016.

After performing in Sheringham, the company will be taking the production to Great Yarmouth’s St. Georges Theatre for a final performance on 25 November. This will be part of the Great Yarmouth Christmas Fayre and switching on the Christmas lights weekend.

St. Georges Theatre want to start their own amateur group, based at the theatre It is hoped that this performance will inspire would-be actors and stage crew to join this new, exciting project.

The village of Dibley is still the quirky, chaotic place that we all know and love, and Christmas is on its way. But first Geraldine has much to do. She has news to break that will leave David Horton in shock! She must find a way to celebrate the anniversary of the Churches saint, which results in a stunning revelation from a Dibley Parish Councillor, and she must find a way to break the winning run of David Horton in the village quiz. A task made more challenging when she realises that his opponent is Alice.

Can she succeed with any of these challenges before the Yuletide season is upon them? Will the village nativity be the final straw? All will be revealed in The Vicar of Dibley Christmas, at the Sheringham Little Theatre from 15 to 18 November at 7.30pm and matinee at 2.30pm on Saturday. Tickets £12. The event, which was hit with the news that one of its guest locomotives could not attend a week before, still drew in many visitors.

The replacement locomotive Pannier Tank 7714 which was provided by the Severn Valley Railway (Holdings) Plc and the SVR Pannier Tank Fund at very short notice provided the additional interest. Passenger numbers over the weekend were good and, apart from a short delay to services late on Friday, the weekend went with almost perfect timing.

Locomotives featured during the weekend were visitor 53809 7F courtesy of its owner John Moorhouse and the West Somerset Railway, Pannier Tank 7714 already mentioned supported by based locomotives 76084 Standard 4, the B12, WD 90775 and 9F Black Prince (now owned by the NNR) joined also by long term visitor N2 loco1744.

There were a number of different train make-ups including the recently introduced Suburban Rake looking resplendent in its Crimson colour scheme. The Freight train also provided something different while double headers featuring the WD and the Pannier gave very rare photo opportunities for enthusiasts.

Initial indications are that this Gala was the best supported since the visit of Tornado back in 2013.

Weybourne WI learn about life as a criminal lawyer

On Wednesday 6 September, members of Weybourne WI spent an interesting afternoon listening to a talk on the life of a Criminal Lawyer, given by Chris Brown, a Chief Executive from Fosters Solicitors in Norwich. Fosters employ 120 staff, a small team of which defend cases where crime allegations have been made.

He assured us his visit to Weybourne WI was not on account of it being identified as a criminal hot spot!

Some of the staff from Fosters had been asked to speak to a variety of community groups, in an attempt to explain a system, which is not always the easiest to understand.

Mr Brown said there was no better group to speak to than the WI, as we are well aware of what it is like to be stereotyped. He said the WI creed was a good starting point for his speech.

Trade & Public - call for details

He explained how for many people, their experience of the criminal justice system is gained from TV programmes. However, the portrayal of criminal lawyers on tv is often not an accurate one.

A big part of a criminal lawyer’s work begins at the Police Station, but in recent years many of the older buildings have been closed down. He went on to give details of a suspected murder case, involving a couple who had lived in Lowestoft. It was fascinating to hear how the verdict was eventually reached and the case later featured on a TV programme with Trevor MacDonald.

Apparently 90% of cases start and finish in the Magistrates Court and 90% of these cases result in a guilty verdict.

Several Magistrates Courts in Norfolk have closed down and cases now go to large court ‘hubs’. This means that those involved are no longer familiar with the local community, which Mr Brown thought was a shame Many questions were asked and Maureen gave the vote of thanks.

When it sang it mimicked some eight different birds including Nightingale. Marsh Warblers are normally found in southern UK where they remain uncommon and local. Small Red-eyed Damselflies were out (20 June) and Mark also noted a Grass Snake and five Adders. A Yellow Wagtail was heard flying over the site by Mark (25 June), which was the first record for some 40 years. The month ended (30 June) with the sighting of a ‘pink’ Field Grasshopper – this is caused by a rare genetic mutation known as erythrism, which means the grasshopper produces more of a reddish protein.

A juvenile Grass Snake crossed a path on the central marsh and Corizus hyoscyami, a brightly coloured bug (red with black markings) was also seen (12 August). The Turtle Dove returned (13 August) and a very large Grass Snake (over a metre in length) was watched crossing a path. The Ivy Bee was first seen this year (25 August) and is the second year that this recent colonist has bred on the Common. Another recent colonist which was first seen on the Common in 2016 is the Willow Emerald Damselfly and one was also spotted at the pond this year by Mark (28 August).

Focus on Family Law

– commentary by Neale Grearson, Family Solicitor at Clapham & Collinge Solicitors

The divorce of Petra Ecclestone Neale Grearson and husband James Stunt is reported to have £5.5 billion at stake following the breakup of their marriage. Miss Ecclestone is the daughter of Bernie Ecclestone the Formula 1 tycoon.

The Judge in the case was reported as urging them to settle their divorce in private as he warned of the potential effect on their children of a public hearing and the need for compromise. Miss Ecclestone was stated to have tried to find a consensual approach to the ending of the marriage but that had been rejected by her husband. Sadly it is often one party who feels that they have tried everything to reach a compromise and it is the other that has not. Petra and James had been arguing about whether their relationship had broken down and the Judge said it was a “very sad state of affairs” that the question of whether the relationship had broken down could not be determined between the parties. Miss Ecclestone’s Barrister said “it is more than unfortunate. It is absolutely scandalous. It is completely obvious this marriage has irretrievably broken down. What is going on

is no more than a charade”. In the background appears to be the major issue over a PreNuptial Agreement that had been signed but in the absence of any agreement the Judge dealing with the case had no alternative but to set down a framework for a series of hearings to take place.

Could this be the World’s Longest Divorce?

What has been suggested by newspapers as the longest divorce battle in Britain has hit the headlines. This relates to what has been quoted as a sixteen year “war” between a former British Airways Captain and his third wife arguing over money since they split in 2001. The Judge dealing with the case said that the length of time “beggars belief”.

The ex-wife told the Court of Appeal Judges that she just wanted the money her family was owed to be able to get on with her life. The ex-husband denied “playing technical games” and insisted that he was simply trying to protect his current (fourth) wife “from the wreckage of the past”!

the cost of service levels with the pain of centralising work to a Divorce Centre still continuing.

The even bigger shock and concern to the parties involved in the sixteen year divorce battle is likely to be how much it has cost them in legal fees let alone emotional damage. Another ‘first’ for Cromer Walkers are Welcome

a truly delicious, complex and refreshing Walkers Are Welcome ale.

This new bottled saison beer is available from Poppyland Brewery on West Street, The Norfolk Food and Drink Co. in Tucker St, and from outlets in Sheringham, Wells and on Norwich Market.

Cromer Walkers are Welcome group have teamed up with Poppyland Brewery to produce and promote a very special brew aimed at walkers - and all who appreciate delicious hand crafted ale.

The idea came from Hilary Cox, chair of the Cromer group, who has a long background in the publican trade having run The Cottage on Louden Rd for many years. She contacted Martin Warren to see if he was interested in creating a new special beer for Cromer. This turned out to be a superb combination as Martin is also a keen walker, writer, historian and geologist, and he relished the challenge of creating a new beer using hops and herbs grown in his garden as well as locally sourced grain. With a reputation for ‘doing different’, this award-winning microbrewery has produced

North Norfolk District Council agrees purchase of historic village shop www.pcsimple.co.uk

Decision guarantees the future of Itteringham Community Shop A village shop dating from 1637 which had been facing closure has been saved by North Norfolk District Council. The future of the Itteringham Community Shop had been uncertain because its current owners have served notice on the Itteringham Community Association (ICA) to terminate the lease, and the notice expires on 8 October. But a proposal to buy the shop and the adjoining Fair Meadow House has been approved. The purchase means the shop will stay in its current location and will be leased to the ICA, and it represents a prudent investment for the Council in line with its Asset Commercialisation Strategy. Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “This is an important community asset and it is fantastic that its future has been secured. There was a huge desire locally and further afield to see this shop saved. We are delighted to have helped achieve this for Itteringham and for the remarkable and dedicated community group which runs the shop.

Cllr Judy Oliver, NNDC Cabinet Member for Corporate Assets and Commercialisation, said “As well as supporting the local community in Itteringham, this is also a sensible move from a commercial point of view. It will generate income for the Council above that achievable from a cash investment, and to be supporting the local community at the same time makes it a win-win.â€? The ICA has successfully run the shop for 25 years and there is potential to expand the shop and cafĂŠ, subject to any necessary planning consent, into the currently unused gallery space. Fair Meadow House is a well maintained and attractive five-bedroom period property with letting and holiday letting potential.

Hedgehog Haven

Hedgehogs are nocturnal animals - they only come out during the day if there is a problem unless it seems to have a purpose and is going somewhere. Second litters are now being born, so an active hedgehog could be a sign of a mother out foraging while her hoglets are asleep.

If in doubt please ring a rescue centre or BHPS for advice. Marian Grimes

Walker raising money for RNLI reaches Cromer

Alex Ellis-Roswell set off in 2014 to walk the coast of the UK to raise money for the RNLI. He left Margate to walk 9500 miles, hoping that sponsorship of £10 per mile would mean he could donate £95000 to the RNLI.

Alex has always had a love of the water and spent a lot of his spare time either in the sea or inland. So he thought fundraising for the RNLI would be an excellent charity to support.

With only 500 miles left to walk of his epic target, Alex is looking forward to finishing his task and returning home. In the past week he has raised over £1000 in Norfolk, which will be added to the £60000 he has had donated so far.

With an estimated finish date of November, Alex will be walking onto Happisburgh, then Gorleston and the other stations along the Suffolk and Essex Coast.

Alex was welcomed to Cromer RNLI by crew members and their offers of meals and overnight accommodation. He said “Everyone has been so keen to give me support and visiting an iconic station in Cromer was on my wish list. The cakes on offer added to a marvellous experience”
