Dig for Victory
Sheringham Methodist Church held a special ‘Dig for Victory’ Harvest Service on 17 September and linked it into the large 1940s event held in the town every year.
We were delighted to be joined for the service by visitors to the town for ’40s weekend and the church was almost full.
During the service, led by Deacon Brenda Hayes, members of the congregation, many dressed in ’40s outfits, took part in character pieces such as the thoughts of an evacuee, a Land Girl, a conscientious objector, a gardener and a church worker.

People in the town can apply for a Christmas Grant from the Poors and Ploughlet Trust, which was set up to give financial assistance to people residing in what was the Ancient Parish of Sheringham and Upper Sheringham.
Grants are made each December to assist with the expenses of Christmas and to provide a festive ‘perk’.
Applicants must be in receipt of a ‘means tested benefit’ such as Pension Credit, Council Tax Rebate or a similar benefit.
The Trust is also able to give financial assistance to people who can show a particular need, for example those who might need household repairs, household equipment or aids towards a specific disability. The Trust can also help certain groups such as young and old peoples’ organisations and community groups.
The overall consideration is that the applicant has to satisfy the residential qualification previously mentioned and to show that there is a need for assistance.
The Charity is a long established Parish charity, is very well off and routinely does not spend all it's income. The Trustees would like to attract more applications, including for the Christmas Grants. These have for years been routinely provided to people who are entitled to means tested benefits and living within the ancient Parish boundaries.
To apply for a Christmas Grant please get in touch with the Secretary of the Trust, Sally Gill by calling 01263 514559 or emailing sallyg5@btinternet.com. Closing date for applications: 10 November.
SHERINGHAM AND CROMER LIONS CLUB
On 12 September we held our business meting in the presence of our Zone Chairman, Lion Arthur Bailey, and the District Govenor, Derek Prior, who had travelled all the way from Billericay in Essex to visit Lions Clubs in the District.
Our manning of the car park at Mannington Hall, home of Lord and Lady Walpole, had been a great success after we bought a walkie talkie system to assist us. We held our usual tombola at this once yearly big charity event, which this year was in aid of MS sufferers and we raised over £200 on the day for local needy causes and British Heart Foundation. The weather was good and we look forward to helping again next year.
Our next event is a Concert given by Sheringham and Cromer Brass Band at 7.30 pm on Saturday 11 November at Holt Parish Church entitled ‘Last Night of the Proms’. Tickets are £5 in advance from Brian Harris, Club Secretary 01263 821276 or brihaz@btinternet.com or on the night £7 with concessions. The church is providing refreshments and there will be a raffle. We look forward to seeing you there. Liz Bowler, Press Officer

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS SOLICITORS in in 2017? 20 17 ?
“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”
I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offffers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.
“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 2017 to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.
Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 0 1263 8 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk 01263 823465

Rotarians Donate to Woodfields Mini Bus Appeal
Sheringham Dementia Friendly Community The first meeting of Sheringham Dementia Friendly Community and North Norfolk Coastal Fitness partnership was a success.
It was smiles all round when Terry Sands, President Designate, from Holt Rotary Club presented a cheque totalling £500 to pupils and staff from Turtles Class at Sheringham Woodfields School.
Those living with dementia took part in chair based fun exercise class and then joined in social games and activities.
The money was donated following the hard work and effort of members of Holt Rotary Club to raise funds for the school. The money will be put towards the new mini bus appeal, for which the school hopes to raise the remaining funds by the start of the New Year. On behalf of the school, Matthew Smith, Business Manager, thanked all members of the Rotary Club for their support.
He added “we are now within touching distance of the £20,000 target needed which will see us able to replace our current 13 year old mini bus. Our mini buses provide us with access to a rich and vibrant local community which forms a key part of our curriculum delivery”.
Weather with Ned Nimbus
The past three months have continued in a similar vein to April, May and June, when our weather was best described as 'a mixed bag’, although overall the balance was in favour of fine weather.
From October to December there will be quite an Atlantic influence as the extra moisture pumped out by an active tropical storm season further south, comes up into the North Atlantic.
This activity has been pretty subdued for years and so far this year it has taken some time to get anything major going. These storms help high pressure to spread across the UK, so the first part of October at least could see us benefit from this. Thereafter average conditions and temperatures look to hold sway.
Brian Canning, Alzheimer's Society Support worker, was also available and gave invaluable advice and support to carers and those living with dementia. A tasty lunch was also enjoyed afterwords by some of the group in the Lighthouse Community Cafe. This session runs every Wednesday from 12.30pm and costs £5 with carers coming free.

Brain tumours now account for more deaths among children and those under 40 than any other cancer. Join others and raise sponsorship for your chosen brain tumour or cancer charity and help us all find a cure for this devastating disease. The 2017 “World Walk” for Brain Tumours is a project of the International Brain Tumour Alliance (IBTA) and is in its eleventh year. We hope to achieve enough mileage world-wide to encircle the Earth at the Equator many times. The “World Walk” symbolically unites all those around the globe whose lives have been touched by a brain tumour.

Keith Skipper Joins Sheringham Shantymen for Catch of the Day
The Sheringham Shantymen are pleased to announce that they will be performing at 7.30pm at Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre on Sunday 22 October for their last public performance of 2017.
To make this yet another very special occasion, the Shantymen have invited their friend and Cromer resident Norfolk champion, journalist, broadcaster, portrayer of squit and wit Mr Keith Skipper as their very special guest.
Musical Director Mr Brian Farrow said “Following on from the last two years where after much turbulent debate an amicable relationship was finally established we thought it would make perfect sense to revisit this union of crab & lobster.”
The Chairman of the Shantymen Mr Bob Hawkins said “We are very much looking forward to working with Keith Skipper again where we will be able to witness first hand his particular brand of wonderful Norfolk squit”.
With regard to their October performance on the Pier, Booking Secretary Chris Dolby said “Once again I know the lads are looking forward to performing at the Pier Pavilion Theatre where we have always been made to feel very at home by the Pier staff and the wonderful theatre audiences.”
Shantyman secretary Dick Grieve when questioned about Norfolk squit admitted that he had been influenced by Mr Skipper when he advised “Yis ... dew yew keep a’troshin’, tergether!”
This year, the Shantymen will be donating all of the profits from the show, to be split evenly, between the RNLI (Cromer & Sheringham) and the Magdalene Group.

Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr
It is impossible to legislate for human nature. Financial and other abuse of the vulnerable, and even within families, has been everpresent. So what is so remarkable about retired Master of the Court of Protection Denzil Lush’s tirade about how he would never make a Lasting Power of Attorney (‘LPA’)?
He spent his working life seeing the ‘car-crashes’ of the LPA system, but probably had little to do with the happy cases where a timely LPA is a life-saver. Like an A+E doctor saying paracetamol should be totally banned because he’d seen too many cases where an overdose had been taken, misuse of a system by the few shouldn’t remove its availability from the many.
It doesn’t take an LPA for financial abuse to take place. In these days of internet banking, funds can be accessed/transferred and mis-spent without a scrap of paper.
Better that an LPA should be in place with the availability of the safeguards of the Office of the Public Guardian than the only route being that of a full-on, expensive and very slow application to the Court of Protection for the appointment of a Deputy.
My own late grandfather’s informal carer ‘persuaded’ him, when he was at the point of losing mental capacity in his 90s, to write a Sheringham Independent 473
cheque so her teenage son could buy a car. The Power of Attorney, by which he appointed me and my brothers, enabled us to have that £9,000 cheque cancelled at the bank. Without it, he would have been defrauded.
The current system could, of course, always be improved. One way would be to require a professional person (medical or legal) to act in the role of Certificate Provider at the point when the LPA is made.
Contrasting the LPA with Mr Lush’s expressed preference for the Deputyship route shows why the LPA is best in most cases. It can take 12 months for the Court of Protection to appoint a Deputy, during which time their finances are frozen, things can get into a real muddle and even the care fees cannot be paid. Sadly, often the person dies before the Deputy is appointed.
Having more than one attorney appointed by your LPA enables them to keep an eye on each other. It is possible to require your attorneys to produce annual accounts to show where the money is going. There can be a restriction so as to place a cap on the amount that a single attorney can withdraw. Ensuring proper thought is better than avoiding an LPA altogether, as this may compound the problem.
A report last year from Action on Elder Abuse warned on the importance of specialist legal

advice. Look for a solicitor who is a member of Solicitors for the Elderly www.sfe.legal who will act as a safeguard against fraud and coercion.
Given the current levels of confusing and conflicting messages about making an LPA, Hayes + Storr have created an ‘easy to understand’ information guide on what the process involves and why it can be necessary. Call in to your nearest branch for a free copy.

Dig for Victory Continued from front cover...
We were delighted to have with us ’40s singer Rachel Eyre, who participated in the service with songs and singing `Lord for the Years`. Following the service, an open air celebration took place on the church lawn in
front of the church, serving food of the ’40s, including spam and bully beef sandwiches, vegetable soup etc - all free to both congregation and to visitors who flocked to the town
1940s Weekend 2017
Now one of North Norfolk’s most popular events, the 1940s weekend returned to Sheringham, Holt, and Weybourne with full force on the 15th and 16th of September.
Once again the event was organised by North Norfolk Railway. They provided a dazzling array of activities, only made better by the blitz spirit of all those that took part.
In Sheringham we had military vehicles, vintage cars and a double decker bus

endorsing Whitbread’s Ale & Stout. We had bomb shelters, and first aid outposts, Charlie Chaplins and battle tanks.
In Weyborne, customers could experience real SPAM sandwiches from the NAAFI. In Holt, you could enjoy Sharon Jiggs, the Battlepipes, and games like the Ration Book Trail and the Pigeon Race.
for the ’40s weekend. Rachel entertained them with singing many of the old ’40s songs.
The whole event was enjoyed by all, and looks to be the start of more to come.
With about 10,000 people visting the towns over the weekend and about 2,000 taking part in the people’s parade, this marks perhaps the most successful 1940s weekend yet. The event is set to cement its place as one of the premier 1940s events across the whole country.

KELLING PROBUS CLUB
Kelling Probus Club held its lunch meeting on 21 September at The Dales Hotel, Upper Sheringham.
Chairman Ken Murray welcomed 24 members and guest speaker Simon Kinder.
After a tasty lunch, he invited Simon to speak on “Norfolk, Gresham, Spies & Traitors’'.
Simon talked first about the vulnerability of the local coast to invasion and how through the ages, it was sometimes disregarded as a potential site for amphibious landings.
Simon then talked about local characters who were sometimes regarded as spies, including 16
Sir Edgar Speyer, a German industrialist, who built the Sea Marge as his home and left North Norfolk in 1914 after rumours suggested he was signalling with lights on top of the building, Anglo Dutch Farmers, a company who seemed to be preparing barns to house the German Air Force, and the Dobbs from Weybourne Mill, who it was discovered were using a transmitter to send spy messages.
Simon then continued with the main part of his talk, which covered the schoolboys at Gresham who became spies for the Soviets. These included Donald Maclean, a member of the Cambridge Five. Maclean's friends at Gresham, who later became spies, were Cedric Belfrage, who spied in Washington and three others including Bernard Flood, the MP for Acton who killed himself when his espionage
story was revealed.
Simon then tried to give us reasons why these clever well-to-do pupils might have become spies.
He suggested that Gresham was a forerunner in education featuring Language and Science and one or two of the teachers of that time were very much attracted to Marxism and Communism. He felt their influence perhaps moulded pupils’ views when they got to University.
After answering several questions, Simon was thanked by Bruce Bidwell for an excellent talk.
We meet on the third Thursday of each month for lunch and a speaker and welcome new members - contact John Whittington on 01263 820333 if you are interested.

Sheringham BeachLife outreach attracts bumper crowds
The BeachLife activity outreach for children and young people on Sheringham cliff top and beach at the end of August was another great success, which attracted well over 200 children and young people.
This was the sixth successive summer that BeachLife has taken place, and each year the event has built on the success of the previous years. It is a joint venture by the churches in Sheringham, aimed at engaging with local youngsters as well as holidaymakers. Despite wet weather on one of the days, all the events took place as planned, and there was a good deal of sunshine during the week.
A team member said “There are nearly 60 volunteers on the team, and we work as a great team to share the Good News of Jesus with the youngsters in the glorious setting of the clifftops and beach in Sheringham”.
The activities each day included the “Beach Special”, where all ages came together at the clifftop marquee on The Leas for music, games, drama and fun, and to introduce the day’s theme, which this year was Streetwise. A popular feature this year was the gunge tank, with at least one leader getting “gunged” each day.
The mornings also included the ‘Going Deeper’ sessions where the children and young people split into age-groups to explore that day’s theme in more depth before breaking for lunch.
The afternoons comprised a family tide fight, junk modelling, the egg parachute challenge, treasure hunts, and giant inflatables, which included an assault course, demolition ball, and Sumo suits. The week was rounded off with a family picnic on the Friday. Evening activities for young people included the return of the popular “Sheropoly” trail around the town, beach games, and swimming
at the local Splash pool, all of which were well attended.
Peter Skivington, one of the leaders, said “We’ve had a fabulous week, with the opportunity to impact over 200 young lives with the message that Jesus loves them and cares about them. That has to be worth celebrating”.
Next year’s outreach is expected to run from Tuesday August 28 to Friday August 31 2018. But Sheringham youngsters will not have to wait until next summer to continue the fun, as the team are already planning for a Light Party on Tuesday 31 October and another “BeachLife Extra” Fun Day on Friday 16 February 16 during half term. About 850 North Norfolk businesses to benefit from more than About 850 businesses of the beneficiaries of this relief will see their rate ÂŁ1m in rate relief across North Norfolk are increases cut by between 25% and 50% this year. www.pcsimple.co.uk

in line to benefit from rate relief of more than ÂŁ1m over the next five years thanks to the introduction of three schemes.
Businesses that have seen their rates go up following recent revaluations, as well as pubs, are amongst the beneficiaries of the schemes, which have been given the green light by North Norfolk District Council. The money has come from central government but it is down to local authorities to draw up plans to distribute the funds.
The largest chunk of money will come in the form of the Local Discretionary Revaluation Relief scheme. This fund – worth more than £900,000 in North Norfolk – is designed to help businesses that received steep rises in their bills following rate revaluations earlier this year. The decision by the District Council means about 700 businesses should be receiving new, lower bills under this scheme alone, highlighting that North Norfolk is a better place to do business.
22
The bulk of this cash – more than £500,000 – will be distributed this year, with a tapering effect over the next few years. The vast majority
Supporting Small Businesses Relief is also aimed at helping businesses that were hit by the recent change in rateable values. It is specifically targeted at businesses that saw the loss of Small Business Rates Relief or Rural Rate Relief as a result of the revaluation process. Meanwhile, it is thought that about 80 pubs will be better off thanks to Pub Relief.
Businesses that are due to benefit from these rate reliefs will be contacted automatically and sent amended bills over the next few weeks.
Cllr Wyndham Northam, NNDC Portfolio Holder for Revenues and Benefits, said “It is great news that about 700 businesses will benefit from the Local Discretionary Revaluation Relief scheme, with others benefiting from the two other reliefs. “We have acted promptly to find the best way to distribute this money, and businesses across the district should be receiving their amended bills soon.
Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “This is a great place to do business, and the fact that so many of our businesses will see a large reduction in their rate increases this year can only help the wider local economy.

'North Norfolk Mammals' talk with Francis Farrow 26 October 7.30pm – 9.30pm This talk will look at the mammals of Norfolk, in particular those species found in north Norfolk during the 21st century. North Norfolk has a diverse number of habitats that are fully exploited by mammals and, although many mammals are secretive, they often leave tell-tale signs or tracks; the talk will include some insights into this fascinating aspect. Francis Farrow has held a passionate life-long interest in the natural world. He is presently the honorary warden of Beeston Common SSSI/ SAC and has been the county’s Mammal Recorder for the last five years. Venue is Aylmerton Village Hall, NR11 8PX. Please park along Church Road or in the overflow car park at the church. Please ensure that local residents can still access their driveways and there is sufficient clearance for agricultural vehicles to use the road. A torch might also be helpful, as the village has no street lighting. To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing.

Leg Veins : Unsightly leg veins can be a problem for millions of men and women, the world over. It is estimated that in many areas, over 60 percent of the adult population suffers from varicose veins, thread veins or spider veins. Sometimes thread and spider veins are like the tip of an iceberg, but they can occur in absence of underlying problems. Often people who have had surgery for varicose veins are left with thread and spider veins and these can be treated very well too. Contrary to popular belief these tiny veins can cause symptoms and can be more difficult to treat then the larger veins.
A medical history and clinical examination is undertaken. If this indicates problems with underlying venous valves and varicose veins then these have to be treated before addressing thread and spider veins. An ultrasound vein scan is ideal but not mandatory in every case.
For thread and spider veins sclerotherapy is usually undertaken- micro injections of medication into veins are performed. These destroy the vein lining and veins are subsequently slowly absorbed by the body. Anywhere between 50-80% of injected veins respond and further injections in the same area can be carried out 4-6 weeks later. Treated veins appear worse before they disintegrate and disappear. Sclerotherapy is considered ‘gold-standard’ treatment for thread and spider veins.
Lasers are also available and can be used in combination with sclerotherapy. We have several vein lasers and we use the best one for your unique needs. This is very important. Higher energies and deeper penetration are required which means that laser treatment can sometimes be painful. With careful patient selection these treatments can provide excellent outcomes as shown here. Varicose Veins : Previously, treatment of painful, swollen varicose veins required a surgical procedure called vein stripping, where the vein was completely removed from the leg.
More recently, endovenous laser therapy has been developed. Bulging varicose veins in the lower leg are usually caused by a faulty valve located higher in the leg that can’t be seen at the surface. The endovenous laser therapy treats the source of the problem. Endovenous laser therapy involves the insertion of a laser fiber directly into the diseased vein using ultrasound guidance. Laser energy heats the vein from within, causing it to shrink, collapse and seal shut. Patients experience minimal discomfort, and they can return to normal activities the same day. Because there are many veins in the leg, the blood that would have flowed through the closed vein simply flows through other healthy veins after the laser therapy. So if you are bothered by painful, achy, unsightly and nuisance veins anywhere on your face or body, please do come and see us to see what we can do for you. Ramblers from Sheringham’s twin town of Muzillac in Brittany attend the 40s weekend After a first and very enjoyable visit walking with the Sheringham Ramblers during the 40s weekend in 2015, a group of 21 from the group Muz’les S’Melles came over once again for five days to experience walking around the beautiful North Norfolk countryside, and also to take part in the 40s parade on the Sunday afternoon.
This visit, the fourth such autumn exchange, was arranged by Stuart Meakin, a member of the Sheringham-Muzillac Twinning Association, in conjunction with the Sheringham & District Ramblers Association.
These exchanges supplement the SMTA annual group exchanges that takes place every summer and, similarly, hosting honours alternate between the towns.
Walks on the four full days included • 15th - 9 km around Wiveton Down, which ended up with a cloud burst • 16th - 13 km, a circuit leaving Aylsham and taking in Blickling Lake • 17th - 8 km, a circuit along Sheringham
coastal path to Weybourne Station (to see the 40s fun) and back via Sheringham Park • 18th - 11 km around Sandringham, visiting Wolferton Station.
The French walkers entered fully into the 40s spirit and came prepared to take part in the parade, waving French flags and sporting period costumes. They were thrilled by the whole experience as they have nothing like it in France, and many could not wait to join in with the dancing on the Station platform.
On the Saturday evening, the group enjoyed live music from the war years along with a fish and chip supper at the The Sheringham Trawler. Hosts joined together to arrange dinner parties for the visitors on two evenings and arranged two other social evenings for everyone, with music and singing.
At the final evening barbecue, hosts and visitors were joined by 15 Sheringham Shantymen who, having given a hugely successful concert in Muzillac earlier in the summer, were delighted to ‘sing for their

Henri le Cadre, president of MuzillacSheringham Twinning Association back in Brittany, and himself a member of a group which sings sea shanties, joined the Shantymen for their final song.
