Friendly Faces mean you are never alone friends and chat about the show. But even if at seaside theatre you don’t want to mix, it means there will

A north Norfolk theatre is holding out a welcoming hand to solo visitors so they can enjoy shows with new friends.

Sheringham Little Theatre has launched a Friendly Faces scheme for people who would like to see a show or movie but have no one to go with.

The new venture - for matinee performances only - is aimed at those who are bereaved, lonely, or just lacking confidence in stepping out to visit the theatre. Theatre director Debbie Thompson said “We are aware there are people out there who would love to see live stage drama or a film but are put off by the prospect of going alone. We aim to be a theatre for the whole community and the scheme means those people can come, be met by a Friendly Face – and, if they wish, share their experience with like-minded folk. Going to the theatre is always a richer experience if you do with someone else, and Friendly Faces enables people on their own to link up with new

always be someone to meet you – one of our Friendly Face contact volunteers. “They can introduce you to others in the same situation, so you are never alone. But if you just wanted to be greeted and left in peace, that is fine too” said Mrs Thompson. The Friendly Faces team, led by theatre trustee Joan Thame, can arrange for people to share a table at the interval in their own special group to discuss the event over a drink.

Mrs Thame added “This is for people who love theatre but find it a bit overwhelming to attend on their own, whatever their circumstances. We hope this scheme will make them feel welcome to come and enjoy shows in a relaxed social setting – and maybe even make some new friends.”

People just need to phone the box office on 01263 822347, or drop in, and flag up that they would like to join the group for one of the afternoon shows.

Full Council meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month. Planning Committees meet on the first and third Tuesday of each month. In addition to committee meetings being held fortnightly, every other month or quarterly. All meetings are held on a Tuesday evening. There is also an Annual Town Meeting which is held in April. Councillors are expected to attend as many meetings as they can and become involved with projects as and when they arise. 4

Holt and District Probus Club Biggles came to Holt on 2 November!

More correctly, Holt and District Probus Club member Ray Morgan spoke to the Club about the flight in a Spitfire WW2 fighter aeroplane he recently enjoyed. Ray had enquired about the possibility of a flight in a Spitfire six years before his name at last came to the top of the waiting list!

The arrangements were made with The Grace Spitfire ML 407, a company run by Carolyn Grace, whose late husband Nick Grace restored the plane to immaculate flying condition in 1985 after a five year renovation programme.

The Grace Spitfire is accredited with shooting down the first enemy aircraft on D-Day 6th June 1944 over Omaha Beach and flew over 320 combat hours in WW2. Biggles Morgan with Carolyn, the owner of the plane and the business

Ray‘s flight at Sywell, Northampton included a Victory Roll, a Loop and tight turns experiencing G force, all under the care of pilot Dave Evans.

Meetings of Holt and District Probus Club are normally held at lunchtime on the first Thursday each month at the Feathers in Holt.

Enquiries about membership (or about a trial visit - visitors are most welcome) should be made to Secretary Alan Holmes on 01263 710782.

Big plans for Splash in Sheringham North Norfolk District Council today announced that a multi-million pound investment in Council leisure facilities at Sheringham could be on its way, partly paid for by a new hotel.

Part of the land around Splash will be made available for a hotel development on the site.

The potential sale of the site would help to pay for an improved leisure centre at Splash, which is now almost 30 years old.

Marketing part of the three acre site will be carried out by commercial property experts, Pygott and Crone, on behalf of the site owners, North Norfolk District Council, with a range of options available for the exact positioning of the hotel on the site. Any funds from a hotel will be directly used to part fund the new leisure centre.

A feasibility study on the future leisure centre – either a refurbishment or a new build – is due to go to North Norfolk District Council’s Overview and Scrutiny Committee on 8 November. The study was commissioned over the summer, following the Council’s Cabinet decision in June setting out the Council’s proposed options for new sports facilities.

Splash will continue to be open as usual to customers and members while future investment

sport and fitness is of huge importance to all ages in this community.”

plans are considered by the authority.

Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council said “This is an imaginative proposal and one that would see the local authority invest in future sporting facilities and build the area’s reputation as a centre of sporting excellence”.

Cllr Judy Oliver, Cabinet Member for Asset Commercialisation and a Sheringham (South) Ward Member said “This is at an early stage and it shows the potential of the scheme to generate improved facilities for local people while safeguarding facilities for our ever increasing number of visitors. We are committed to keeping all the current leisure facilities – the leisure centre and skate park - on the site.”

Cllr Maggie Prior, Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing added “Keeping fit and active is vital and we know that funding new sporting centres is often beyond the resources of local authorities. By taking this approach, we will be able to see whether the new sporting centre could be partly paid for by a hotel in Sheringham. It’s a clear opportunity to improve facilities for all.” Cllr Brian Hannah, Member for Sheringham North said: “I’m very pleased to support the continuation of sports facilities on this site,

The Council’s 2015 Indoor Leisure Facilities Strategy recommended that the Sheringham facility was protected – either by a new facility or modernisation.

The proposal has been drawn up to guarantee the ongoing provision of the Sheringham Skate Park and Sheringham Sporting Association’s football and cricket facilities on the current and adjacent sites.

Following consideration of the report by Overview and Scrutiny, it is likely that the Council’s Cabinet will consider a full business case for the proposal at its meeting on 4 December 2017 and if necessary, any Council budget decision will then go to 19 December Full Council meeting. In addition, the Council is about to test the market for a new leisure and pool operator to take on the Council’s Leisure Contract which is due for renewal on 31 March 2019.

The current contract covers Fakenham Sports and Fitness, Splash Leisure and Fitness in Sheringham and Victory Swim and Fitness Centre in North Walsham and the procurement process will run at the same time as any improvements to the Sheringham site.

WI NOREASTER GROUP AUTUMN TEA PARTY

On Thursday afternoon, 26 October, Weybourne village hall was buzzing with chatter and laughter as Weybourne WI hosted the Noreaster Group Autumn Tea Party. Representatives from six local WI groups were invited to attend.

The afternoon began with a film show given by Clare Agate from Norfolk Library Service. This featured archive footage showing the North Norfolk coast and interviews with some interesting local characters, which were very entertaining.

A delicious Norfolk tea was prepared and served by members of Weybourne WI. The afternoon concluded with an amusing performance of ‘Now I’m in the WI’ by the Weybourne Imps.

Weybourne WI will also be hosting the Christmas Carol Service at Upper Sheringham Church in December and the Noreaster AGM in April next year.

Stage rock star has wizard new role in seaside panto A stage star who has led a smash hit rock musical in London’s West End will be heard at a north Norfolk pantomime next month.

David Fynn took NBC : David Fynn – who starred in School the lead in the stage of Rock in London and version of School of will be the voice of the Rock, taking the role Wizard in Sheringham’s of Dewey Finn made panto this year. famous by Jack Black in the movie version. Now the actor, who lives in Los Angeles, is set to feature as the voice of the Wizard of Oz at Sheringham over the festive period.

The star link-up comes through panto director Nick Earnshaw who went to drama school in London with David – as well as panto dame Shane Armstrong.

“We were at the Webber Douglas drama school together and when I needed a larger-than-life voice for the panto, he came to mind. I was thrilled when he said’ yes’, although it meant I had to rewrite his part to suit his big ego character.”

Irishman David, who recorded his part in a studio in LA, caught the acting bug when playing the lead role in a school production of Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. His first professional part was in the TV series Spooks where two of his three lines were cut. But he has gone on to work in the National Theatre, and have parts in Doctor Who, Sherlock and Game of Thrones before starring landing the star role in the London production of School of Rock for the past year. David and Nick have worked together in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night in 2005 with David as Sir Toby Belch and Nick as Feste the fool.

Mr Earnshaw said this year’s panto was a

New Hot Rocks

Hot Rocks is owned and managed by John and Donna Lee, we have a great team of staff led by our excellent head chef, Simon Hunter Marsh.

The main theme of Hot Rocks is to provide a unique dining experience using great local products like John’s own crabs & lobsters, fabulous local steaks & fresh fish, all backed up by Simon’s deliciously inventive daily specials.

“dream team” of a really strong professional cast, bolstered by local dance school youngsters.

His version will be based on the traditional tale – but with modern music, puppetry, magic, special effects including fire and snow, two chase scenes, and … The Guillotine of Doom.

“The challenge is getting the audience to forget about the Judy Garland movie and enjoy our take on the original story,” he added.

Sheringham Little Theatre director Debbie Thompson said “Having a star like David appear in our show is a real boost. We’re hoping he will make our wizard a real rocking role.”

The panto runs from 9 December to 1 January. For tickets and information contact the Sheringham Little Theatre on 01263 822347 or visit www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

Since opening at the end of September, we have had excellent feedback from customers who have enjoyed the experience and the theatre, of Hot Rocks, booking is advisable and essential for a Friday or Saturday night. We aim to build on this fabulous start and make Hot Rocks the dining destination of choice in North Norfolk.

We aim to give our customers a great night out, with helpful, friendly staff providing advice on how to cook on the “Hot Rocks” and creating a relaxed, comfortable ambiance.

We are open seven days a week, from 11 am, serving a light lunch menu until 3pm without full menu available all day. Sunday lunch with a twist is becoming a favourite, we provide all the trimmings, roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, tasty local eg and you cook the meat on your own Hot Rock.

We are a 40 seat cover, ideal for small or large parties. Look out for the pre-theatre menu if you are planning a visit to the Cromer Pier Christmas show, or if you are planning a works Christmas outing, we have a special Christmas party menu available for pre-booking.

Ring Out the Old, Ring in the New!

A feast of unusual Festive Songs celebrating winter and the New Year with Coast Singers and local group, Hummingbirds and Gallus, on Saturday 2 December at 7.30pm at The Lighthouse in Sheringham. Final preparations are under way for the 2017 Coast Arts Christmas Concert. The community choir, The Coast Singers, has come together specifically for this concert. The rehearsals, led by Natasha Hood, are under-way. “I love bringing together singers in this way, to give people a chance to rehearse and show the results in a concertâ€?, said Natasha. “We've performed several similar events over the last few years and they are always enjoyed by the singers and the audienceâ€?. This Christmas concert is an inspiring mix of songs, both old and new, celebrating the winter and, especially the New Year. The program includes old lesserknown carols such as The Roby Mill New year Carol from Yorkshire, a northern England wassailing song, 'Da Day Dawn' based on a very old fiddle tune for the new year from the Shetlands, and two versions of 'Auld Lang Syne'. As an extra feature this year the singers will be joined by two guest groups, Gallus, led by Andrew Gilling and Hummingbirds, led by Emma Askew. Tickets are ÂŁ6 on the door.

In memory of those who suffered. I remember the quiet of that place. Where guns once rattled like tin cans on a wedding car. Sergeant Bently, straightened his back, gulped, and shouted “Come on me lads; before stopping an early morning bullet and dying strangely, mud spattered, blood spatterd, where poppies now grow. Red poppies sway in the breeze. Sam's body splayed awkwardly. Rotting on Flanders muddy pasture; the clouds hide the sunlight. In Cromer, Lillian lies still, dreams dreams in the gold sun drenched corn field, planning for a lifetime.

Singing in the chapel, of golden harps and viols, a much reduced male voice choir sustain the myth that God removes the dark clouds. Red poppies still sway, mocking what is left of Sam's cold body; Lillian dreams on, - unaware. GRJ

Popular Cromer business set to celebrate 10 years in the town The Old Rock Shop Bistro is open 8am to 6pm, Monday to Sunday, with food served all day.

A popular Cromer business is set to celebrate its 10th year in the town. The Old Rock Shop Bistro, on Hamilton Road, was taken over by Sam Grout in November 2007.

For more information visit www.theoldrockshopbistro.co.uk or call 01263 511926.

Open seven days a week the Bistro is run by Sam and his sister Rachel Grout. Sam, 31, said: “I started working in the café that was previously on this site back in 2003 and when the business came up for sale I took it over in 2007.

“We renamed the business to reflect the heritage of the building. If you know Cromer well, you may remember it as J&M's Rock Shop, a tourist favourite that traded on the site for over 20 years.”

Serving an array of breakfasts, lunches, cakes and pastries, the team also offer a reliable and trusted catering service in homes, community venues and businesses across the region. Over the past decade, Sam and his team have made plenty of changes to the town-centre bistro, and proudly source meat, fish and other ingredients from local suppliers in the town.

To mark 10 years in Cromer the Bistro will be offering free coffee refills throughout November and are inviting customers to share their big birthday cake on November 2.

Clapham & Collinge Solicitors announce first 'Charity Lasting Powers of Attorney Scheme' taking place throughout November 2017

As we continue with our campaign to raise awareness about the legal and financial implications of dementia and the importance of having the correct legal documents in place, we are offering a 25% discount on Lasting Powers of Attorneys throughout November. In addition to this discount, Clapham & Collinge Solicitors will also make a £40.00 donation per Lasting Power of Attorney appointment to support 4 Norfolk based charities. Our selected charities are: • The Benjamin Foundation • Norfolk & Norwich Association for the Blind • North Walsham Dementia Support Group • Sheringham Little Theatre

‘‘I am delighted to be launching our first 'Charity Lasting Powers of Attorney Scheme' this November which is traditionally 'support a charity month'. We have a great relationship with all of our chosen charities and this scheme will mean that the monies raised will help them continue with the great work they do across Norfolk'’ said Andrea Smith,

Marketing executive.

If you lose the ability to manage your own affairs, a partner or family member cannot automatically deal with things on your behalf. A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document that enables people you choose to have legal authority to make certain decisions for you, if you become unable to make them yourself. A Lasting Power of Attorney gives you the reassurance of knowing your wishes will be respected if you become unable to make decisions for yourself, and it enables people you choose to have access to your finances to make payments on your behalf.

Lin Whitehead, Head of the Wills, Trusts and Probate team at Clapham & Collinge said ‘‘Ensuring you have the right correct legal documents in place and forward planning can protect yourself and your loved ones. I always advise my clients to plan ahead for later life and have those important conversations with their family and friends while they can'’.

The cost of preparing and registering a Lasting Power of Attorney, will depend on whether Lin Whitehead you wish to have both a Lasting Power of Attorney (Property and Financial Affairs) and/or a Lasting Power of Attorney (Health and Welfare) prepared and registered. If you instruct us through this scheme and you would also like to make a Will, we will offer Wills at our usual fee but will also make an additional £40 donation to the 4 Norfolk based charities. All appointments must take place by Friday 1st December 2017.

To claim your discount and book your November appointment, please contact the North Norfolk team today. Contact our North Walsham branch by calling 01692 660230 or our Sheringham branch on 01263 823398.

Norfolk Jazz - November and December

Laura White returns to the Hub at Sheringham Little Theatre on Sunday 26 November. She last appeared at the venue nearly two years ago and her lively programme of jazz vocals, combined with her effervescent personality, made her a great success. Laura is an established jazz and soul singer and is well known throughout the region. Her versatility will be apparent in her performance. Laura will be accompanied by the ever popular Simon Brown Trio which, in addition to Simon on piano, boasts Ivars Galanieks on bass and Brian Mcallister, drums. On Sunday 3 December the Pinewood Saxophone Quartet will be at the Hub. The ensemble, which includes four of the region’s best saxophonists, has an extensive repertoire but will for this night, concentrate on jazz. The programme will include numbers from the nineteen-twenties to more contemporary jazz, a touch of Argentine tango and, possibly, a few seasonal numbers. Martin Thomas (soprano saxophone), Anna Parker (alto saxophone), Martin Eaton (tenor saxophone), Christine Godrey (baritone saxophone). The music starts at 7.30pm. Tickets for the Hub are £9.50 from the box office (01263 822347) or at www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com (transaction charge applies). We can advise you that The Norfolk Dixieland Jazz Band’s gig at the Goat Inn, Skeyton, on Sunday, 3 December has unfortunately had to be cancelled by the venue.

North Norfolk Photographic Society North Norfolk Photographic Society held their first members’ competition of printed pictures on 1 November and the very distinguished photographer Roy Essery came from Colchester to judge them.

Judge Roy Essery

Roy is a member of Colchester Photographic Society and Ipswich and District Photographic Society and in 2008 became one of the founding members of The Suffolk Monochrome Group.

The Old Recluse by Val Dawson

In 2016 he gained MPAGB, the highest distinction awarded by the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain.

There were only a few photographs entered in the Novices section, but the winner was Val Dawson whose moody monochrome print ‘The Old Recluse’ shows an old man in a hood in a tacky shack, and a less than joyful look on his face! Second was Val Dawson (again) with ‘Secured’ and third Karen Spence’s photo ‘Buttermere walk, Cumbria’.

The section of the competition for Advanced Members drew a much larger entry and, as ever, of a very high standard. Roy set ten or so of the best to one side before he made his final decision, which was to award first place to Nick Akers for ‘The Cuilin Hills’, a view of mountains across a lively sea with sculptural shaped rocks in the foreground. Second was Malcolm English with ‘Laura’ a beautifully set picture of a nude and third ‘Keeping Watch from Paul Richards. In fact, Roy awarded 10 marks out of 10 to 4 of the pictures – and 9 or 9.5 to another 8!

Garden Fences Ready for Winter By Matt Carltton of Norfolk Landscape Gardeners Willie Nelson once said;

dog merrily “fertilising” your flowerbed.

“And after all the warmth Of the Summer and the Fall Cold November wind Cuts the deepest of them all”

Prevention is much better than cure.

He was right.

Those of you who read my previous article about trees will hopefully remember that I urged you to step out into your garden to look at your trees. This month, I would like you to do the same but to pay attention to the rest of the garden and think about how the worst of the winter weather may affect it.

Fence panels are an obvious place to start. As we enter a season of tempestuous wind, the forces acting on a fence panel can be quite dramatic. The continuous movement of panels and posts can start to cause areas where that stress becomes concentrated (for example, on fence posts at ground level) which can become fatigued and weakened. Before long, you wake to find your fence laying on your lawn and the neighbour’s

01692 405301

ND ME M CO RE

Those old panels and posts which you have been meaning to “do something about” could be about to make your life more expensive and aggravating than it needs to be. New fencing is not hugely pricey and looked as saving you money and time in the long run, is well worth the investment.

Take a moment to have a look at your fencing and be honest with yourself. If it looks a little tired, don’t wait for it to fail. Be proactive, it is much more economical to do so than to put right a problem once it occurs. Give us a call and we’ll be delighted to come and assess your fence and make our recommendations.

Please bear in mind that not all companies

are equal. There are, essentially, two main “schools” of fencing contractor. There are those who will provide the cheapest (usually feather edge or shiplap) panels and cheap lowgrade posts, and who will usually provide a “tooth sucking” quote, probably written on the back of an old McDonalds receipt. Then there are others, like ourselves, who will accurately assess and measure your fence, discuss your personal requirements, and submit a rational, honest and fair estimate, using the highest quality products sourced locally from suppliers with whom we have worked for many years.

Please don’t allow yourself to be “fobbed off” with a cheap quote. Choose something which will last, season after season, year after year. Give Norfolk Landscape Gardeners a call, all our concrete work is guaranteed for 10 years, all our quotes and estimates are free, and we can even create bespoke, custom fence panels to your specification.

North East Norfolk Bird Club

'An Introduction to Birdsong' talk with Moss Taylor & Andy Clarke on 30 November 7.30pm – 9.30pm The sound of the dawn chorus in spring is surely one of the wonders of the natural world, but birds do not only sing in spring. So, how and why do birds sing, when do they sing, and how do you learn all those different vocalisations? In a repeat of their popular double-act on seabirds, Andy Clarke will give us a brief introduction to how and why birds sing, followed by a guide from Moss Taylor on how to recognise 14 of the commonest bird songs, illustrated with recordings and photographs. As a contribution to phenology (the study of seasonal changes in animals and plants, which is becoming increasingly important due to the current period of climate change), the recording of song periods is one of two new NENBC projects starting this winter, and this project will start in December. Venue - Aylmerton Village Hall, NR11 8PX. Please park along Church Road or in the overflow car park at the church. Please ensure that local residents can still access their driveways and there is sufficient clearance for agricultural vehicles to use the road. A torch might also be helpful, as the village has no street lighting. Please consider car sharing.

Our meeting on 24 October was a very relaxing evening with Rev Alan Barker sharing with us some of his favourite poems - which he says we should always read out aloud. He began with one of Thomas Hood's poems, which several of us knew by heart from our childhood, and he carried on with works by other poets including Rudyard Kipling. Thank you Alan for a very enjoyable evening.

28 November - Robert Easton from Easton's Coaches will talk to us and maybe inspire us to join some of the many outings which his company arrange.

Halloween Thriller

It was a thriller when young stage stars created a Halloween show in just three days at Sheringham Little Theatre.

Seventeen actors and dancers were put through their paces by choreographer Vikki Feetham during a special musical theatre workshop for budding stars aged eight to 18. They learned dance routines including Michael Jackson’s classic creepy Thriller and Timewarp from the Rocky Horror Show, which they then showcased at an end of course show on Friday evening.

Theatre director Debbie Thompson said “We like to encourage young people to get involved in the performing arts, and these workshops are a fun way of them learning new stage skills.”

The next chance to get involved in a youth theatre production at the venue will be week-long run of the fun gangster show Bugsy Malone next April from 6th to 14th.

Age Concern North Norfolk hosted a DEMENTIA AWARE BREAKFAST EVENT

THE HEALTH VOLUNTEER SERVICE links volunteers with people who are experiencing long term health conditions, which leave them socially isolated and less able to participate in their local community.

It is a befriending service that reduces loneliness by actively matching volunteers with people who are in need of a positive change in their life. Staff from Voluntary Norfolk will be at Sheringham library from 10am on 22 November and Tesco’s Sheringham from 10:30am on 28 November, to promote and recruit for their health volunteer service.

If you would be interested in becoming a volunteer or you would like to find out some more information, please go along and say hello to them at one of these venues. If you cannot make it to one of these dates, call 01263519454, email chloe.edwards@voluntarynorfolk.org.uk or drop in on Tuesdays at their Merchants Place office in Cromer to speak to Chloe about your interest.

Scottish rugby commentator praises England’s coach

Ian Robertson, the BBC rugby commentator and broadcaster, was this year’s guest speaker at the Holt Rugby Annual Dinner held on 2 November at Bridge Road.

In an entertaining and amusing presentation, he made some serious points about the game across the world. In particular, he spoke of his pride at being the only Rugby journalist to have interviewed Nelson Mandela immediately before the 1995 South African victory in the Rugby World Cup.

Somewhat controversially, he described England’s Eddie Jones and Ireland’s Joe Schmidt as the two outstanding coaches in Northern Hemisphere rugby – and was clearly less impressed with the last Lion’s coach Warren Gatland of Wales.

Over 160 people attended the dinner and the supporting speeches by Club President Paul Williams and First XV captain Ashley Woods emphasised that Holt is is good shape. As Woods put it, “Holt is rebuilding andHolt enjoying success Upper at all levelsSheringham on the field. Importantly we8TU are Road, NR26 inspiring the next generation of young players”. Paul Williams said that the club was punching above its weight and would continue to do so.

An informative talk about Dementia Friendly Communities was given by Jennie Cummings-Knight, Chair of Age Concern. The breakfast was also attended by trustees and staff from the Day Centre Hub at Age Concern, along with regular customers who dropped in throughout the event. The talk, which gave tips on supporting those with dementia and their families, as well as information about diet and healthy lifestyles, was followed by much lively discussion.

The ministers were able to gain useful knowledge about their local charity, Age Concern North Norfolk, which is staffed by a small team of paid staff with a larger group of volunteers and offers a range of services including a Lunch Club. Day Centre, Befriending and Home Visits and also includes Meals on Heels for those unable to get to the centre.

Pop in for a visit Tuesday to Saturday 9am – 3pm and speak to the Manager, Angela Reith, or telephone Susan 01263 821188 about what is on offer. They will be pleased to see you!
