Unlucky break for young panto star

A schoolgirl actress rehearsing for a panto role has found herself in the wrong kind of cast – one that is healing a broken arm. Young Ayrelia O’Leary-Leeson was looking forward to being in Sheringham Little Theatre’s upcoming production of the Wizard of Oz.

She had already learned songs and dances for roles as a ‘Strictly’ dancer, flying monkey and lifeboatman as one of the local youngsters drafted in to support a professional cast.

But instead stepping into the spotlight, she tripped over a goalpost at school just two weeks before curtain up – and ended up in hospital A&E instead of the land of Oz.

Unlucky break for young panto star

Continued from front cover... The 12-year-old Sheringham High School student said “I was really looking forward to being in my third panto, so I am really disappointed. “We were just starting to learn the acting parts in rehearsals when I fell over running backwards going to a PE lesson – and I knew it was bad because of the angle of my wrist.”

Ayrelia, from Plumstead near Holt, had 48 hours in hospital and is now set for another month in a cast to recover – but it was a joint decision by her family and the theatre to drop her from the on-stage team.

Director Nick Earnshaw said “It was a really difficult decision because Ayrelia is such a strong and popular member of the cast. We have joked that she took the old acting good luck message of ‘break a leg’ too literally.”

She dropped into rehearsals to wish her friends in the panto team well, and to have Coco the monkey puppet sign her cast.

Ayrelia has appeared in the venue’s Peter Pan and Cinderella pantos and a youth production of the Mikado – and is determined to bounce back in 2018 for Bugsy Malone auditions, plus pantomime next year.

The Wizard of Oz started on 9 December and goes through to New Year’s Day. For tickets and information contact the Sheringham Little Theatre on 01263 822347 or visit www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

THE SCHOOL NATIVITY

Every school must have one, the Christmas Nativity, Poor Tom was feeling so depressed at all the activity, He wanted to be the donkey or even have 'Joseph's ' part He'd read the parts so nicely and knew them all by heart.

He knew he'd be a great donkey as he had a cheeky grin And Mum and Dad in the audience would be so proud of him, He believed he'd make a good 'Joseph', walking by 'Mary's' side He could smile and beam in every scene and exude a wondrous smile. The part he got he did not want, the 'innkeeper' was he All dressed up, one word to say, he felt it, oh, so twee, The single word was two letters long, his prowess he could not show He stood there in the doorway and all he said was “No”.

Rehearsals were, as always, endless, the teachers would sometimes shout, And Louise, who was 'Mary' was very soon booted out, Over and over they did their parts, his patience wearing thin Remembering always to say just “No”, 'cos there was no room in the inn.

Sunday 17th December 6pm Christmas Carol Service Refreshments afterwards

Then came that day in December when parents settled down to see The Lower School perform that year's production of 'Nativity', Everything was going fine until the innkeeper, young Tom, Said, “Yes, of course you can, come in sit down, I'll put the kettle on”. Paul Scrivener

Bright future for Locomotive 76084 on the North Norfolk Railway as benefactor steps in to purchase shares A North Norfolk Railway supporter has bought a key share in Standard ‘4MT’ No. 76084 – keeping the 2-6-0 at the railway for the foreseeable future.

The engine’s future was thrown into question in September when 31 per cent stakeholder John Oldcorn advertised his shares for sale. Although not a majority controlling stake, the 247,532 shares are enough to exercise an influence on the management of 76084.

NNR Managing Director Hugh Harkett successfully led the negotiations for the deal on the unnamed supporter’s behalf and will be the representative on the board while the benefactor wishes to remain in the background. The shares were exchanged for an undisclosed sum.

“The engine stays here and we have lots of plans for it,” said Hugh Harkett. The first of those includes a re-tube with the aim of extending its main line boiler certification from seven to ten years before embarking on a third consecutive summer season of dining trains over the Bittern Line between Sheringham and Cromer.

Mr Harkett added “The other shareholders in the Standard 4 have received the news very well and while we’re not putting a block on it to stop it going elsewhere, it will be based here. Nevertheless the loco will probably be visiting other railways and will likely be running on the main line and we will not want to stop that happening unless we have work for 76084. The North Norfolk Railway have a long term agreement with 76084, and that would have been the case anyway. The 76084 Company Ltd. will still pay for any work carried out on their engine.”

The Riddles ‘Mogul’ has been based in Norfolk since moving there for the completion of its restoration from Barry scrapyard condition in 2013; initially on an steaming agreement that repaid the loans made by NNR for the restoration.

Eric Bond, publicity officer for 76084 Locomotive Company Ltd. said “We were concerned that a heritage railway line could buy half the shares and left others out in the cold… but they [the NNR] look after the shareholders really well, so it’s a win-win all round.”

The NNR continues to use the Standard 4 as one of it’s prestigious engines and will of course be delighted it is now available for the North Norfolkman Dining Trains between Holt, Sheringham and Cromer and for the forthcoming Santa Pullman Lunch trains this December.

North Norfolk District Council successfully prosecutes fly-tipper

Council continues to crack down on anti-social behaviour

North Norfolk District Council has successfully brought another prosecution for fly-tipping as it continues to crack down on this form of anti-social behaviour.

John Jonas, 45, of East Runton, near Cromer, pleaded guilty at Norwich Magistrates Court last week to illegally dumping waste, including clothes, toys, cardboard and paper, in a field along Hall Road, Cromer, in April last year.

He was fined £600 and ordered to pay more than £1,000 towards prosecution costs.

Cllr Annie Claussen-Reynolds, North Norfolk District Council Portfolio Holder for Waste and Environmental Services, said “This demonstrates once again that we are serious about tackling this issue, which is a blight on our communities. Whenever we have sufficient evidence to take these matters to court, we will prosecute. There is never an excuse to fly-tip, and we are determined to stamp it out.”

Retired? New to the area?

t Christmas Gif Gift.... t............

You don’t need to be a recent arrival for this to be of interest, but you do have to be retired or near to it.

Cromer & Sheringham Probus Club is a great environment for retired men to make and meet friends over a good lunch. We also have a guest speaker at most meetings, with talks on a wide range of topics, often with a local flavour.

s Upper Sheringham arge Overstrand s West Runton

kenziehotels.com ls.c

All in all, the Club is an excellent way of getting to know what goes on in the area. The speakers are part of it, but our members are also involved in a wide range of other local clubs and activities, so connections can be established. An added bonus is that you do not have to do anything other than come along to enjoy the meetings and, if you cannot attend every month, it does not matter.

The regular meetings take place at The Links Country Park Hotel in West Runton on the first Tuesday of the month, except in January when we meet on the second Tuesday to avoid New Year.

Gentlemen are very welcome to get in touch and book to attend a regular meeting as a visitor; however we are holding a coffee morning, open to all, when booking is not required. It will take place on Tuesday 23 January from 10.30am at the Hole-in-One Sports Bar, at The Links Hotel.

The coffee morning has been arranged for the purpose of welcoming new people to come along to get to know us and what the club provides. ‘Other halves’ of both members and visitors are very welcome at this event.

More details of the coffee morning and the Club generally can be obtained at www.candsprobus.club or by contacting Dave Vickery on 01263 824306.

Silver & Ward will continue to be one of the few solicitors to offer ALL the following services:

Most of the rubbish consisted of discarded drink cans and bottles plus bits of plastic such as old bags, food containers and packaging. There were also some larger items which were the result of deliberate fly-tipping and included car tyres, paint tins, kitchen worktop panels and large plastic flowerpots. Due to the season, a number of waste fireworks were also collected.

The streams appeared healthy with sticklebacks present and a grey wagtail was also noted feeding in the water.

The Group would like to thank North Norfolk District Council for arranging the collection of the rubbish bags from the layby. Sheringham Independent 478

Santa’s Fundraising Finale

Santa Paws made time in his hectic schedule to deliver presents to the dogs Christmas Party hosted by Animal Magic Dog Club. The club has been busy fundraising all year, supporting local good causes and the chosen beneficiary for the party was DogLost, Norfolk & Suffolk Branch. This volunteer led organisation does an incredible job of assisting in the search and return of dogs reported lost or stolen in our region. If the worst happens and you lose your beloved pet, they are the first

people to turn to for help.

Great fun was had at the party raising £500, which DogLost will use to buy specialist wildlife cameras. These cameras will enable them to remotely monitor feeding stations to see if they’re being visited by the missing dog which will assist in their capture.

The club will also be arranging for their final food delivery of the year to Norfolk Strays who we have been supporting throughout 2017. Another amazing local organisation that saves stray dogs who remain unclaimed from being put to sleep.

Thank you to all members who have supported our fundraising efforts throughout the year, we wish you and your dog a very Happy Christmas and look forward to seeing you all at the start of our new training term in January.

Animal Magic Dog Club based near North Walsham is a fun, family orientated club offering a wide range of training for puppies, junior and adult dogs.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

As we approach the end of 2017 it is time to reflect on what we have been doing to help cats and kittens in the very large area that we cover.

At the time of writing, we have had 192 cats in care, their ages ranging from newborn to 12 years old. Over 160 of these are now in new homes with a further three also reserved. Some of these have been long term residents in the cat pens and, although we were delighted to see them go, we have missed them. Cats like Harvey, our lovely FIV positive lad who needed an indoor home and Beth, a very timid cat who is now settled with Justyna, one of our volunteers, who is happy to allow her to take time to settle in her own time and on her own terms. Keifer and Kia, two lovely black cats that came in from a colony, will also have left for their new home together with lovely people who have had timid cats before and appreciate it will be several weeks before they accept their new lifestyle. It can take weeks [or even months]for this to happen but is especially rewarding when it does.

Several cats have needed treatment at the vets, mainly for dentals, although this year there have been several with eye problems, two of which have needed surgery for ingrown lashes. Nutsey, one of these, is also having treatment to resolve a allergy problem and cannot be put up for adoption until this is resolved. Theo, an active young kitten, came into care with a nasty fracture and needed weeks of cage rest with Bren, one of our volunteers.

On two occasions this year we have answered cries for help from people with too many cats. The circumstances have been different but in both instances we have been able to help. In the first instance 12 kittens came into care and we paid for the adults to be neutered. The second is ongoing with 13 already with us and 2 more to come in. In this case the owner is in hospital and the landlord had to get her consent before we could help. All are friendly cats, unusual in these situations.

As well as our special Neutering Campaign, Cats’ Protection policy is now to pay for neutering of all kittens that leave before they are old enough for the operation. It’s another good reason to give a home to one of our cats or kittens. Our Adoption Fee is very reasonable and is the same for all, irrespective of age or colour, and they will have been to the vets, treated for fleas and worms, vaccinated and chipped.

Golden Eye, one of the cats that recently arrived from a multi cat household

Finally, we would like to thank everyone who helps or supports us and wish them a Happy Christmas and a Healthy and Prosperous New Year.

North Norfolk District Council launches its first Business Awards

Inaugural celebration of the best in the district gets under way The inaugural North Norfolk District Council Business Awards have been launched – and businesses across the district are being encouraged to put themselves forward to win one of the prestigious titles.

The awards (#NNBA18) are open to businesses of all sizes and across all sectors. The aim is to promote and celebrate the vibrant business community across North Norfolk, and to unearth some hidden gems during the process.

There are seven categories : Agricultural, Business Growth, Business Development & Innovation, Environmental, New Businesses, Tourism & Hospitality, and Young People & Skills.

Entries can be submitted until 15 January, with the shortlisted businesses invited to an awards ceremony at Gresham’s School on 15 February.

Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said

“We regularly deal with some very successful and very exciting ventures, but too often these successes don’t get the recognition they deserve.

“This inaugural project will reveal some of the hidden business

stories across North Norfolk, and give the district as a whole the chance to celebrate the vibrancy of our business community.”

Cllr Nigel Dixon, NNDC Portfolio Holder for Business & Economic Development, said “There is huge diversity within the business community across North Norfolk, and these awards are designed to be relevant across all sectors. Many businesses will be keen to win their individual categories, but it’s just as important for us that every organisation that enters will benefit from taking part and be able to shout about all the successes they are having.”

The categories are being sponsored by Anglian Water, Archant, Eastlaw, New Anglia LEP and Norfolk Hideaways.

The awards night will be hosted by Chris Sargisson, Chief Executive of Norfolk Chamber of Commerce. He said “ Norfolk businesses are in great shape and many lead the world within their chosen field by demonstrating the key attributes needed for success: dynamism, creativity and resilience, to name just a few. The future and growth of the economy across the county – including in North Norfolk – is centred on recognising brilliance, supporting the region as a place where success thrives and, most importantly, celebrating the best.”

Award-winning Nurse Practitioner set to tread the boards with two other all in all it's great fun and a thrill to do with family members at Sheringham Little Theatre

Award-winning Nurse Practitioner Mrs Carol Manson, from the Mundesley Medical Centre, is set to make Stage Direct's latest production a family affair by joining her husband Nigel and his son Jamie on stage at Sheringham Little Theatre.

Stage Direct are in the throes of rehearsals for Alan Ayckbourn's set of five short plays Confusions, which is full of the twists and dark amusing turns that Ayckbourn is famous for. Mrs Manson won an East of England award in October for her outstanding contribution to Primary Care in 2017 and was successful in being a cut above some 500 other surgeries. She joined Stage Direct about 9 years ago, but this year is delighted to star alongside other family members. The two plays that the family will perform in together are Between Mouthfuls and A Talk in the Park,

performed with other cast members.

Mr Manson said "I am not only very proud of Carol's professional achievements, but it's also a privilege to be able to work alongside a very talented actress on stage too. All the cast in this production work tirelessly on being the best they can be. We all have to work during the day doing what we do but somehow they all turn out week after week in the dark at this time of year to go through the rehearsals which takes a lot of

very special people."

Another cast member involved has swapped roles from writer/ producer this time. Ashley Burgoyne has effortlessly drifted into acting roles in two of the plays and is rising to the challenge, albeit a very wordy one!

The production consists of five short plays Mother Figure, Drinking Companion, Between Mouthfuls, Gosforth's Fete and A Talk in the Park. Each play deals with the eccentricities of humanity: dilemma, loneliness, fraught dining experiences, a fete that ends disastrously and finishes with five odd characters on park benches. Dark and yet deliciously humorous this will be a treat for the senses!

Under the very capable directing talents of Derek Bull, the five plays in Confusions will be performed at the Little Theatre on 19 & 20 January at 7.30pm. Tickets are available from the Little Theatre Box Office on 01263 822347 or online from their website at www.sheinghamlittletheatre.com

AUTUMN NOTES FROM THE COMMONS This autumn was quite dry and virtually frost free until the last week of November when the weather turned a bit more wintery.

Pisten Bully 300

Back in September though, at the beginning of this seasonal period, Mark Clements and I were still in summer mood as we counted up to 10 butterflies and six dragonfly species on ‘the wing’. Male Ivy Bees were building up in numbers, some 60+ (02 Sept), as they waited for a female to emerge from a burrow. The bees nest in the ground, often in large aggregations. Once emerged the female would be pounced on by the males forming a mating ball until a ‘victor’ flies off with his prize (the female). Mark was lucky to see a Marsh Harrier overfly the Common and also found a Sedge Warbler present, 6 Sept. On 9 Sept the first Willow Damselfly of the year was noted by Mark. By 11 Sept shieldbugs were present throughout the Common with Common Green, Hawthorn and Gorse found by Mark. The Gorse Shieldbug was particularly interesting as it was a late summer adult, a form which is not usually seen on the Common.

Miller Moth caterpillar

A Miller Moth caterpillar was noted 15 Sept – this is a general feeder, found on many tree species, although Birch is a favourite. It is an unmistakable green caterpillar covered in long creamy-white hairs. Grass Snakes, both adult and juvenile, were very much in evidence and notably 16 Sept, a mating ‘ball’ was found, which consisted of two males and a female. It was unusual to find mating behaviour this late in the year as it is claimed that it ceases in June. An Otter ‘spraint’ was found on a bridge by the pond 17 Sept, indicating that this elusive mammal had passed by also an immature Red-veined Darter was seen basking on the heath. Mark reported a Firecrest 18 Sept,

well as a Slow-worm. Another Whinchat turned up 26 Sept, and a Ruddy Darter was also present. A Common Redstart was spotted by Mark 28 Sept, which marked the end the autumn migration as far as summer birds returning south.

In October, the Firecrest was again noted by Mark 03 Oct, as were Pink-footed Geese overflying, a mating pair of Willow Emeralds and two Adders. A very small Adder, some 6”/15cm long was found basking on a path 9 Oct. Winter visitors were now being seen heading over the Common from the north 10 Oct. These were mainly members of the thrush family, Blackbirds, Song Thrushes and Redwings, although another Yellow-browed Warbler, a Firecrest and two Mistle Thrushes were noted 14 Oct, by Mark.

A Red Admiral was seen 15 Oct, as were Giant Willow Aphids. A Fieldfare was noted 19 Oct, and Mark spotted a Brambling,23 Oct, along with nine Siskins and two Chiffchaffs plus a 4”/ 10cm Grass Snake. Three Bearded Tits were found by Mark in the central marsh reeds 26 Oct, however, they soon departed westwards. Two Hawfinches were seen overflying 28 Oct. This autumn has seen a large influx of these finches with flocks of 40 or more being observed along the coast. Such numbers are unprecedented as these are normally scarce birds seen only rarely, however, it is thought that the food source in Europe, generally Beech mast or the Cherry crop, may have failed and the shortage of food has prompted this unusual irruption. The Kingfisher returned to the pond 30 Oct, and on 31 Oct Mark flushed a Woodcock and Red-legged Partridge.

moving around with a flock of Long-tailed Tits and also found the Woundwort Shieldbug. The following day a Whinchat was present and six Swallows were seen overflying. The Firecrest was again present with the tit flock 20 Sept, and a pair of Stonechats was noted as well as the first Fly Agaric of the year.

The rare Yellow-browed Warbler made a brief appearance 21 Sept, and on 22 Sept, Mark observed a Woodlark, juvenile Hobby and Spotted Flycatcher as

Sheringham Independent 478 16

A flock of 20 Fieldfares passed west over the Common 3 Nov, and a very tiny fungus, Fenugreek Stalk-ball, was found by Alex Prendergast. This fungus grows on bark and is probably overlooked due to its small size. Mark reported Kingfisher and Firecrest 5 Nov, and another Hawfinch 6 Nov, with further sightings of the Kingfisher, two Firecrests, a Brambling and two Red Admirals. A Water Rail was heard calling 9 Nov, and the two Firecrests, Kingfisher and Brambling were still present. A Fox was watched in daylight 12 Nov, which was the first for quite a while and a Little Egret was spotted overflying 14 Nov. Lapwings were moving west 18 Nov, and on a very sunny 19 Nov, up to four Common Darters were still flying. On 22 Nov the contractors came to cut some of the fens and grassland and used a very large but low impact machine known as a

Pisten Bully 300. The machine travelled on wide tracks mowing and collecting as it went. It was so efficient that the cutting programme was completed in one day. Firecrest, Kingfisher, Little Egret, Siskin and Redpoll were all recorded by Mark 23 Nov, along with an Orange Ladybird. The Sheringham Loke RiverCare Group was out 25 Nov and collected an assortment of litter and fly-tipped rubbish from the streams around the Back Common, Top Common and Layby. As the month ended the weather became more wintery and the temperature dropped. There were more frosts yet the Firecrest was still present as were a Chiffchaff and the last butterfly was a Red Admiral recorded by Mark 26 Nov.

The forecast is for colder weather in December interspersed with milder periods so the winter is ‘stop and go’ making it hard for us to adjust, as well as the wildlife. Remember that you can see daily updates of the Commons wildlife at

Winter

Most folk dread the onset of Winter, Those long, chilly nights and sharp frosts. The northerly winds blow straight through you, Especially those cold, biting gusts! The weather can be really awful, With rain, sleet and snow often seen. I love the all the wintery conditions, Except when it gets too extreme! I love walking the bleak empty beaches; Few others will brave this stark scene. But wrapped up in warm winter clothing, It’s so bracing - the air fresh and clean! In cities, the streets empty early, As people rush back to their homes. They only go out if they have to, No one wants to be chilled to their bones. Then there’s the planning for Christmas, Decorations and lights for the trees. Baubles and tinsel and presents to wrap Thrills mounting as we prepare these. I admit there’s a real anticlimax, Once celebrations are done. The first months of the year can really drag by, But at least the nights aren’t so long! I love sitting beside my warm, glowing fire On horrible nights when it's cold. When snow covers the ground, I feel safe and sound And cocooned, as my life’s put on hold! For those who can’t see any good points, And think Winter’s too hard to enjoy, They have only to look a few weeks ahead, When Spring will bring back warmth and joy! Frances Wraight

Weybourne WI enjoyed ‘Playing for Cake’

Christmas jumpers were out in force, when members of Weybourne WI met at the village hall for their Christmas party on 6 December.

We were entertained by ‘Playing for Cake’. They are a group of community musicians, who work on a not-for-profit basis, to provide music sessions to promote health and wellbeing. They played a variety of songs ranging from Christmas carols to Robbie Williams and the Bee Gees. We were all encouraged to join in. Sandy Bailey gave a vote of thanks.

Following the singing a delicious festive tea was served consisting of sausage rolls, mince pies, iced cakes and shortbread, which we all thoroughly enjoyed.

Finally, the raffle was drawn and a few brief items of business were discussed. We were asked to consider the resolutions being put forward to our National Federation Annual Meeting for voting at our next meeting. The afternoon concluded with Sue Webber singing a folk song ‘I am Christmas let me in’.

The meeting in January will be a new year’s lunch at Sheringham Golf Club.

Just short while since their success in winning a competition against nine other clubs in the Fens, North Norfolk Photographic Society beat three more local camera clubs in a competition on 4 December.

In the annual 3-way contest against the Buxton and North Walsham clubs, the North Norfolk Society came first in the print and projected image sections, beating Buxton CC overall by 135 points to 125 points and North Walsham PG’s 122.

Special credit goes to Diana Knight with ‘Unlucky’ and to Malcolm English with ‘The Embrace’ which both gained full marks - 10 out of 10.

The battle was judged by Dave Saunders from Lowestoft.

Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are normally held on the first and third Wednesdays each month at the Holt Community Centre. For further details please contact the Club Secretary, Judith Wells at secretary.nnps@gmail.com or see the club website at www.nnphotosoc.org

Winter Garden Makeovers By Matt Carlton of Norfolk Landscape Gardeners

“It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, Everywhere you go”

Except in my garden, which is looking particularly unglamorous at the moment, as a result of a chronic lack of time.

It’s a bit of a problem isn’t it, trying to think about making a garden special during the winter months? It is tempting to spend our time contemplating the “warmer” weather to come, to close the curtains and light a fire and let the garden go to the dogs.

The reality is though, that this is a brilliant time to treat yourself to a garden makeover. Now that the weather has turned colder, the weeds have died back, and the leaves have dropped, we can really see the structure of our gardens and have a good long think about the space we would like to enjoy in the coming summer.

Now is the best time to think about structural changes to your garden. Creating new spaces like patio areas, outdoor dining spaces, open areas, pergolas, garden buildings, new lawns, flower beds. This is the ideal time to put those

things in place, so that when the spring comes, new plants can be put in and by the time we arrive at the idyllic and maybe mythical “long hot days of summer”, you can put your feet up and enjoy your garden. I often ask you to step into your garden for a moments contemplation on a particular subject. This time, I would like you to wrap a scarf around your neck, pull on your warmest socks and step out into your garden and imagine the summer. Imagine the warmth of the sun on your face, the smell of the flowers, the sound of birdsong in every corner, the hum of bees amongst the flowers. Consider the crackle of a barbeque, the chink of an ice cube in a glass and above all, the sound of your own contentment as you relax in your own private Idaho, shutting out the world and all its troubles and simply being where you are.

A beautiful thought, I think you’ll agree. But we need to make that happen. That patio replacement you need to set off the hot tub you promised yourself has to be designed and built, the new flower borders to replace the overgrown ones need to be put in and arranged and the new driveway that you have always promised yourself to make the

front of your property really stand out needs to be planned and built.

That is where I’d really like you to give us a call. Norfolk Landscape Gardeners truly relishes the opportunity to make a garden really work for people, to make your space personal, practical and beautiful. From initial concept, via detailed hand-drawn designs, to completion, we really want to make your garden beautiful for the summer and right now is the ideal time to start.

Our initial consultations are free, where we will visit you to discuss your ideas in detail and work those ideas into a practical reality, so please give us a call and treat your garden to a Christmas present. Let it be all it can be.

Look after each other,Merry Christmas from all of us at Norfolk Landscape Gardeners

Dear Margaret,

Please may I say through your Sheringham Independent a big thank you to the young lady with a small child and an older lady, who helped me when I took a tumble on Station Approach on Friday 25 November.

I suffered bruised knees and hands and injured pride.

Many thanks once again. Yours sincerely, N Farrow

I would suggest that the council saves money by being more efficient, not cutting services. For instance there are many different types of ‘passenger-carrying’ services all over the county but run by separate organisations – as well as conventional buses there is school transport, transport to social services day centres, non-emergency patient transport to hospitals, hotel and superstore courtesy buses, community transport, minibuses owned by charities, clubs and schools, and so on. Why not co-ordinate the lot into one operation by pooling vehicles and staff? Some places are doing this. I wonder if the county council has considered it?

NORTH NORFOLK FENCING & LANDSCAPING

Norfolk County Council has a legal duty to support ‘socially necessary’ bus services that do not get provided commercially by bus companies. In this area the main council supported buses are the 5 on Sundays and the 44 in the evenings. The council needs to save £125 million by 2021 and is reviewing the above subsidies to try and save £0.5 million in 2018/19 from the £3.1 million a year it currently spends on subsidising buses and grants to community transport. It is currently consulting the public.

A Special Child

Church bells ring out in the cold, frosty air, Like a jubilant, festive revue. Christmas is just round the corner, With so many things still to do. It’s easy to forget the real reason We give thanks, many places on Earth, For this wonderful, magical time of the year, We rejoice in a special Child’s birth. Many children are no longer taught, About He who saved all of Mankind. They have presents and parties at Christmas, That’s all that they have on their minds! Many complain Christmas items Are on sale much too early each year. They talk of ‘commercialisation’, But we all need some time to prepare. Most families start shopping early, To make sure Christmas is a success. If they leave it too long, the best will have gone, And their children will not be impressed! We’ll enjoy all the anticipation, Preparing for this Christmas tide. When families and friends come together, To give thanks and praise this special Child.

Scrap in Stamp Duty Land Tax for First Time Buyers

The Government have announced in the Autumn Budget, plans to cut Stamp Duty Land Tax for first-time buyers in the hope of easing the current housing crisis. Chancellor Philip Hammond declared the plans in an effort to help first-time buyers struggling to get on the property ladder.

The change has been introduced as new data shows that Stamp Duty Land Tax alone blocks 45,000 house purchases each year. It has been welcomed by many as there are concerns that the property market is at risk of coming to a standstill, and with the increase to interest rates, this is seen as a beneficial change to the home buying process.

What is Stamp Duty Land Tax? Stamp Duty Land Tax is a tax paid on the purchase of both residential and commercial properties, if over a certain value, in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. You pay the tax when you: • Buy a freehold property • Buy a leasehold property • Buy a property through a shared ownership scheme • Are transferred land or property in exchange for payment, e.g. you take on a mortgage or buy a share in a house

What are the changes? • Stamp duty to be abolished immediately for first-time buyers purchasing properties worth up to £300,000 • In London and other expensive areas, the first £300,000 of the cost of a £500,000 purchase by first-time buyers will be exempt from stamp duty

As per the HMRC's guidelines, in order to count as a first-time buyer, you must not, either alone or with others, have previously acquired a major interest in a residential dwelling or an equivalent interest in land situated anywhere in the world. This includes previous

acquisitions by inheritance or gift, or by a financial institution. If the property is purchased jointly, all the purchasers must meet these conditions.

Will this measure help the housing Rosemary Farman crisis? Whilst the temporary relief period that ran from March 2010 - March 2012 shows the cut in Stamp Duty Land Tax can be successful in enticing first-time buyers, it is not the only factor affecting them today.

First-time buyers still face the struggle of saving for the deposit needed as part of the purchase, mainly due to the ratio of property prices to incomes doubling over the last 30 years. As such, many receive a gift from parents or grandparents to aid towards the deposit and therefore allowing them to purchase their first home.

Many also now face the effect of the rise in interest rates, which are the highest they have been in five years. This will have a direct impact on mortgage rates, meaning monthly repayments are likely to be higher, and this is just another thing for potential home owners to consider when deciding whether to buy their first home.

Alongside the current changes impacting the country it remains to be seen if this will have the desired effect on the market, however any help for first-time buyers in this economy is certainly welcomed!
