Defibrillator erected in memory of Mike Stone On Sunday 11 February friends and family of the late Mike Stone gathered at Sheringham Lifeboat Station to witness the dedication of a Defibrillator Unit. Mrs Stone wanted to purchase a defibrillator in memory of her husband Mike, knowing that Mike’s life had been extended by the use of a similar machine some years earlier and wished for that chance to be given to others.

Defibrillator erected in memory of Mike Stone
Continued from front cover... Mrs Stone, who co-ordinated efforts to raise money for the defibrillator, thanked the enormous efforts made by the local community, lifeboat crew, friends and colleagues of Mike who had between them raised over £2000 to buy the kit. Almost half of the funding was raised during a bicycle ride by ‘Ross’ and ‘Olly’ who are close friends of Mike and Joanne, the rest came from donations and from the ‘Just Giving’ page and from Mrs Stone herself.
Mike Stone was a good friend to the lifeboat station and crew, many of whom were pall bearers at his funeral in February 2017. Sheringham RNLI Senior Helmsman David Hagan commented “Mike was a friend to us all. He was a very intelligent man; he was generous to a fault and was never lost for a word or phrase. He had a wonderful sense of humour and he was a great supporter of the RNLI. We miss him”.
The defibrillator has been fitted to the north facing wall of the Lifeboat Station adjacent to the front door and alongside a new 999 emergency telephone supplied by the RNLI.
Lifeboat Operations Manager Brian Farrow said “We all knew Mike who had lived in Sheringham for many years and we applaud Mrs Stone for her selfless action in providing this defibrillator unit for use by the general public. This is a very generous action on her behalf which also fits in exactly with basic life-saving principles of the RNLI.” Photo: christaylorphoto.co.uk
Sheringham WI
Sheringham WI welcomed Sheringham Dementia Friendly Community to their February meeting.
SDFC have taken the approach that it is really important for people living with dementia and their carers to be able to continue to take part in all their activities for as long as possible. As a result they are providing dementia awareness sessions for all community groups and organisations in Sheringham and the surrounding areas.
Sheringham WI members were pleased to learn how easy it is to make a group dementia accessible and what a significant difference this can make to people’s lives.
Sheringham WI were also excited to learn about the Memory Moon Walk that is going to take place in May for Dementia Awareness and look forward to entering a team.
Sheringham WI has many exciting plans for this year with a Royal Wedding Tea Party planned for 19 May, our usual Vintage Tea Party for the carnival, and our Car Boot and Games on Carnival Crowning Day at The Leas.

WEYBOURNE WI DISCOVER ‘WHO’D BE A HOTEL INSPECTOR?’ On 7 February, 42 members of Weybourne WI enjoyed an entertaining talk by Mr Steve Barratt entitled ‘Who’d be a Hotel Inspector?’
After 23 years in the Army Catering Corp he joined the East Anglian Tourist Board where he trained to be a Hotel Inspector. Later he worked for the RAC and VAQS, where he assessed a variety of attractions including National Trust, Forestry Commission and RSPB properties.
He had numerous experiences to relate including tales of haunted hotel rooms, robbery at The Savoy and being arrested in a Dinosaur Park. He’d even suffered a frost bitten nose during a swim in a Dublin hotel pool.
He described the loneliness of staying in hotels alone for many years, but he’d also endured many more problems such as food poisoning and infestations of bed bugs and cockroaches. Not to mention dealing with impossible hotel owners.
We were all amused at his complaint of being over fed with chocolate cake, once the owners of the Farmhouse B&B’s he was assessing learnt that it was his favourite.
Finally, he listed some of his pet hates, many of which we could sympathise with!
Celia Howe gave the vote of thanks.
During the business meeting, it was unanimously agreed that our charity for this year would be Weybourne Horticultural Show.
A collection at the Noreaster Carol Service in December resulted in a cheque for £166 being presented to North Norfolk Riding for the Disabled.
On 24 April, Weybourne WI will be hosting a Noreaster Meeting at Upper Sheringham Village Hall where Steve Short will give a talk about the magician Jasper Maskelyne, whose grand illusions tricked the German armies and air force in North Africa during World War II.
Sheringham Stroke Support Group
The Stroke Association is the only UK – wide charity solely concerned with helping everyone affected by stroke. It is working for a world where there are fewer strokes and all those touched by stroke get the help they need. www.stroke.org.uk Stroke Helpline: 0303 3033 100 The Sheringham Group was started in 1985 by Rosemary Klein, who retired in 2011. Its aim is to provide practical and emotional support to all those people living in North Norfolk whose lives have been affected by stroke, including their carers. The Group offers a friendly, sociable environment in which stoke survivors and their carers can meet and interact with people whose needs are similar.
Our meetings are held fortnightly on Wednesday afternoons from 2.15 to 3.45. Spring session resumes 7 March until 20 June, and our Autumn session from 5 September to 5 December, followed by our pre-Christmas lunch on 12 December. A variety of guest speakers and other entertainments, and exercises are conducted once a month. We may be able to provide a free door-to-door taxi service for anyone who may need transport. We meet at the Communal Day Room at Anchor Close, Sheringham.
The Group is also looking for someone to take on the duties of Treasurer. If you can spare a few hours a session to look after our finances, we would like to hear from you. Sheringham Independent 482

North Norfolk Photographic Society
Sarah Kelman is a commercial airline pilot. She also is winner of several international gliding championships. And she is a sub-aqua enthusiast. And she is a successful photographer, who came on 7 February from her home in Cambridge to tell North Norfolk Photographic Society about the trip when she and her husband and their children aged 6 and 7 sailed across the Atlantic.
engine when there was no wind!
Classique ocean race from Cascais, Portugal to the West Indies.
Sarah showed through her photographs their thorough preparation of the boat, and the excitement of the start, the vagaries of the weather (storm and calm) and the huge welcome they received at the finish. Along the way, torn sails had to be stitched back Sarah Kelman together, but there were few mishaps, and they saw no other boats or ships except one yacht, They entered their classic cutter ‘Croix des whose young crew were mystified that in a Gardes’ to race in the inaugural Panerai Transat sailing race they were not allowed to use their

But that was not the finish. The family then took the boat on a journey right up through the islands of the West Indies and along the eastern coast of USA to New York. From there, Sarah flew home and back to work; her husband hired a couple of crew and sailed home with the children, but was caught by a hurricane on the way and was out of radio contact for several worrying days.

Instead she receives three separate visitors; her ex-husband Leo, an ageing film star fresh from a punch-up with a reporter, Leo's current wife Judy, and his latest mistress Sadie, an aspiring Shakespearian Juliet seeking Margot's acting advice.
Just as the inevitable fireworks kick off, Leo surprises everyone ... and then the kissogram shows up ... Debunking of January Divorce Rush
Clapham & Collinge Family Law Update by Neale Grearson
Recent statistics that have been published throw doubt on whether there is a rush for people to start Divorce Proceedings in January. Historically the media has drawn attention to what has been dubbed “D Day” being the first Monday in January when allegedly the most number of divorces are started in a year.
The figures that have been recently produced reveal that in fact more divorces are started in other periods during the year than the first quarter of the calendar year. In fact the attention drawn to “D Day” by the media and Solicitors has been criticised as resulting in more marriages coming to an end! Correctly (but perhaps cynically) it has also been pointed out that with the substantial delays that there are now with the centralised divorce arrangements to be able to time the starting of a divorce to a particular day at the beginning of January is almost impossible – but it did make good headlines!
There is always a period (sometimes short and sometimes long) between somebody deciding their marriage is over and the Proceedings actually being commenced. Solicitors will see clients at all stages in the breakdown of a relationship although very often clients only seek to instruct a Solicitor when they have already decided that their marriage is at an
end and there is no prospect of a reconciliation. Solicitors will always talk to clients about the prospects of marriage guidance or counselling assisting but other than on rare occasions when an early meeting is sought very often people make decisions based on the ending of a relationship without first taking legal advice. It is the repercussions of that breakdown and possible divorce that people then take advice upon from a Family Solicitor.
There therefore appear to be no genuine “highs” or “lows” when more or less divorces are started during a year. However there are key “pinch points” when pressure is put on relationships and very often these relate to occasions when couples are forced into a 24/7 situation such as over Christmas or for long holidays together. It is therefore a little unrealistic to continue to talk about “D Day” or January being the key period when divorces are started.
Would You Pay Extra Tax To Fund Legal Aid? There has been a lot of recent national debate about whether everyone should accept an increase in their income tax to better fund the NHS system. When legal aid was cut some years ago for the majority of people this was done purely on financial grounds. In essence there was not enough money to go round and so choices had to be made. There were stringent cuts in the old family legal aid system now leaving many people not being able to afford
to take advice from a Solicitor.
It does seem that whatever political party will be in Government in the foreseeable future it is very unlikely that the legal aid system will change. Certainly there is nothing on the agenda of any of the parties to suggest that money will be set aside to resurrect the old legal aid system for civil work and in particular family advice. Would you agree to pay more income tax to be able to fund the divorce of somebody who financially cannot afford to pay for it themselves? Whilst this is simplistic in essence that is one of the choices that the Government has to make.
The emphasis therefore seems to be on who needs protection or support in priority to somebody else. Domestic violence has been identified as a key area where someone who is financially eligible should have legal aid for Family Proceedings but where do you draw the line? What about Proceedings that deal with children and their long-term future where there is no domestic violence – would you agree to pay more income tax so that those people can get legal aid?
To find out more or discuss your individual requirements in further detail, our dedicated Family Law solicitors will be delighted to help. Contact Neale Grearson for appointments at our North Walsham office on 01692 660230 or Sheringham on 01263 823398.

Sails return to Horsey Windpump for first time since 2014
After extensive restoration work, Horsey Windpump – an icon of the Norfolk Broads – is soon to return to its former glory.
working order.
Tim Whiting was the millwright who has been working on the project and has used the same tools and techniques that built Horsey Windpump over a hundred years ago. He said “We’ve faced some challenges with windy weather and very wet ground conditions, so we had to go back to the drawing board and devise a new method for lifting the stocks and sails. Normally we would have used a crane but the ground is so boggy it would likely sink. Instead we used a cherry picker and a lorry with a HIAB (small crane), which are both much lighter and therefore better able to cope with the conditions on site. Horsey’s sails are the largest we have ever constructed and she
Last month the newly finished sails were lifted into place atop the National Trust landmark. Nine months after the cap was returned following conservation by the charity, Horsey Windpump was finally complete once again. Winter storms and heavy rain that led to higher than normal water levels on the Broads delayed the lift.
The Windpump has been without sails since 2014. After they were removed following winter storm damage rendered them unsafe. Subsequent investigations uncovered extensive rot in the cap and an ambitious project began to see this Broadland landmark restored to full

Another arrival came in on 17 February. Willow was found out during the day time laying in the sun - not a good sign as it usually means a very sick hog. She was very cold, so the first thing to do was to gently let her get warm before offering food and water. I have her on a heat pad which sits underneath her container so it gives a constant steady heat. She is eating a little which is a good sign and is on a course of antibiotics, so fingers crossed she will recover.
There will be a fund raising Prize Bingo on Saturday 24 March at New Road Bowls and Snooker Club in North Walsham, 7.30 start. All funds raised goes towards the hedgehogs’ food and medication.

The National Trust’s project manager for this project, Paul Coleman, said “2018 will mark 75 years since Horsey Windpump’s sails last turned, after she was put out of action by a lightning strike in 1943. So it’s really exciting to have reached this historic point in the project and by the end of this year Horsey’s sails will once again be turning in the landscape, reinstating this magnificent heritage building’s place back in the community.” Now fitted, the stocks and sail frames will require the striking gear and shutters to be installed, which will enable the sails to be controlled and complete this phase of works. There is still a lot of internal works to be completed and this will be carried out over the next few months.

Trustees needed for local charity
Have you been wondering about volunteering some time for a good cause, but want to use your particular gifts and skills? Newly retired with some energy and enthusiasm, or in work but wanting to “give something back” to your community?
Age Concern North Norfolk is a self-funded charity, based in Sheringham, working for the benefit of older people across central North Norfolk. It supports people aged 50+ (some with dementia) by providing a Day Services Hub, lunch club, Keep In Touch clubs, intergenerational activities and a Drop In/Befriending service.
If you have financial, human resources or past business expertise, your skills will be particularly valuable, but we welcome expressions of interest from all individuals who are willing to commit approximately 3-4 hours a month to volunteering with us as a Trustee. 14
Trustees usually serve for a period of 3 years and then can stand for re-election for a further period. You will be joining a team of dedicated people who will offer support whether you are new to this kind of volunteering or whether you are a seasoned volunteer.
We will value your unique skills and innovative ideas, together with support for fund raising events.
We hold a trustees meeting currently once a month on a Thursday afternoon, and meet for a shared lunch beforehand at the Day Services Hub in Sheringham.
Full information on what being a trustee involves is available at https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/charity-commission

The Coming of Spring
Green shoots are pushing through the snow, soon the crocuses will show. Bright yellow, mauve and white, they will be a welcome sight. Then there will be daffodils to lift my spirits high, last year I saw a field of them against a bright blue sky. They will be growing everywhere, a waving sea of gold. Daffodils bring happiness to both the young and old.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Several of the cats mentioned last time have now left for their new homes and there has been a lot of interest in those that are still with us. The remaining young cat from the previous multi cat household has also joined her new family.
Gandalf is looking much better as his scars are now healing. The other three cats were due to come in last week but, unfortunately, our volunteer who was due to look after them was ill so their arrival was put on hold. Hopefully these three lovely cats will be with us by the time you read this. We have had instructions from the lady who is kindly looking after them in the meantime, to make sure that Tripod, who as her name suggests only has three legs, gets special attention as she cannot scratch behind her ear. We are very grateful to this lady who is making sure they are well fed and safe until they can join us.
We have, on occasion, mentioned the colony of cats on the industrial estate. Although help has been given at several locations there, the bulk of the cats are on one site and are being fed regularly by a caring cat lover. We were therefore worried to see that there had been a large fire on the estate and were concerned that some of the cats might have been in the area and could have been harmed. When we called our friend he was able to reassure us that the cats he cares for were safe and well. There are still some cats there that have to be caught and neutered and we are keeping our fingers crossed that all are caught soon, before it gets warmer and the cats start to breed again. Most are last year’s kittens which unfortunately evaded capture until too old to come into care to be socialised and found new homes. I believe most of the companies on the industrial estate are now aware that we are happy to help and, as well as paying for the adults to be neutered, will take the kittens into care providing they are still quite small. We are always happy to help anyone in this situation if they contact us.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please

Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats. org.uk for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.
Curtains
My head is going round and round, I’m getting in a tizz. I’m measuring for curtains - what a pain it is! Inches into centimetres, turn them back again. How many yards or metres do I need for each curtain? Should they be ready-lined or with linings separate? Should they be plain or patterned, brightly coloured or sedate? So many choices I must make, it makes me want to cry! Slats or nets for privacy? These problems multiply! I think I’ll have a cup of tea and rest my weary brain, So I’m refreshed and ready, to face it once again. After hours and hours of this, I’m really in a bind, So stuff the nets and curtains - I’m going to have a blind!

Local MP highlights charity funding opportunity Apply for up to £20,000 for your charity group in 2018
Local MP Norman Lamb is asking community groups and local charities across North Norfolk to think about what they could do with up to £20,000 this year.
Charities and community groups can apply to receive grants of between £500 and £20,000 raised by players of People’s Postcode Lottery.
Between 14 and 28 February 2018, charities are being urged to submit an expression of interest in the funding, which requires basic details about the organisation, as well as a very short description of the project they are proposing.
Clara Govier, Head of Charities at People’s Postcode Lottery, said “2017 was a fantastic year for hundreds of grass-roots projects across Great Britain, who received funding from these three Trusts in excess of £8.2 Million. We want to encourage charities to grab this opportunity so that they can continue to make a huge difference to communities around the country.”
Norman Lamb MP said “North Norfolk is home to some fantastic
Canaan Christian Centre
The funding is made available through three different charitable trusts depending on the type of project: • People’s Postcode Trust seeks applications for projects that focus on the prevention of poverty, promotion of human rights and equal rights. • Postcode Local Trust supports community gardens, play areas, wildlife and green energy projects. • Postcode Community Trust focuses on grass-roots sports, arts, recreation and healthy living programmes.
For more information on how to apply for funding, please visit the Trusts’ websites : www.postcodetrust.org.uk, www.postcodelocaltrust.org.uk, www.postcodecommunitytrust.org.uk
Players of People’s Postcode Lottery have raised more than £263 million to date for over 4,000 good causes across Great Britain and internationally. A minimum of 32% from each ticket goes to charities
Registered Charity No. 214779
Local children too are not forgotten as the Canaan Centre mini bus will be on the road for another year, bringing them to their club in Sheringham and enjoying trips to other places.
Thank you to the musicians who gave their time freely to make it a lovely time together

charities which I've had the honour of working with over the years. I'd encourage as many local charities in my constituency and Norfolk as a whole to apply for this additional funding. It's a great opportunity."
Our annual sale at the Parish Hall in Cromer was a very successful event. All the volunteers worked tirelessly and the result was £2000 more than we have raised before.
The children in the Ukraine orphanage are very happy as their Christian summer camp has been booked and they look forward to lots of laughter, food and fun.

We are a very friendly club that puts the emphasis on the enjoyment of the game.
We meet at The Cottage, Louden Road in Cromer on a Monday evening from 7pm to approximately 10pm. There are usually four to five tables and play is duplicate.
