Social Group Invites New Members

Get out and about more with Sheringham Recycled Teenagers. We are a well-established social group for the active over 50s. We hold a members evening on the first Tuesday of every month in The Morley Club in Sheringham with talks, quizzes and games nights. In March our meeting featured a fascinating illustrated talk by a Blakeney NT Ranger, and there is always plenty of time for a chat and a drink from the bar.

We have a programme of regular daytime and evening activities including walks, meals out, cinema and theatre trips, ten pin bowling, a craft group and book clubs. We also organise trips out to events and places of interest in the broader local area. For example, in the past few months we have been to the Thursford Christmas Spectacular, the Faberge/Radical Russia exhibition at The Sainsbury Centre, and the Strangers Hall in Norwich. new members as well as new ideas for activities.

The group is very informal and welcomes

We are holding an Open Evening on Tuesday 1 May at 7.30pm at The Morley Club. There will be a free glass of wine, a chance to find out more about our various activities, and, of course, a very warm welcome.

For more information please contact us at recycledteenagers101@gmail.com or phone Janet on 01263 822751 or Anne on 01263 826083

Dear Margaret,

As a responsible dog owner I am staggered by the number of people who think it's ok not to clear up after their dog. You know who you are. You know what your dog has done, and you just don't care that the next person walking along could tread in the mess, or the next pushchair could have it's wheels fouled. Would you really not bother if your hall carpet became soiled? Perhaps it might make you consider other people if it did. Children play on the commons. Would you be happy for your child or grandchild to step in poo?

It is lazy, antisocial and downright thoughtless not to clear up your dog's mess. Pooh bags are cheap and there are plenty of red bins around. It is also an offence not to clean up. Have I given enough reasons for you to be more responsible?

A caring dog owner, Sheringham

MEETING WAS ‘A BED OF ROSES’ AT WEYBOURNE WI

Spring was in the air at Weybourne WI on 7 March, when Simon White gave an informative talk on how to grow roses successfully.

Simon is Manager at Peter Beales Roses, Attleborough and has worked there for 37 years. During this time he has appeared on tv and radio and met a variety of celebrities. 2018 is the 50th anniversary of Peter Beales Roses and they are hoping to celebrate by winning a 25th Gold Meal at Chelsea this year.

Simon brought rose bushes and clematis plants to sell and also a variety of useful items from the Garden Centre Shop. He explained that roses are easy to grow, but salt winds are an issue. They prefer clay soil, but can be grown in light sandy soil, if fed with plenty of well rotted farmyard manure and watered regularly. He gave lots of helpful tips on planting, feeding and pruning, including the surprising fact that old banana skins can be used to feed roses, as they contain high levels of potassium.

He also described how to plant a rose in a spot where one has previously died, by using the ‘cardboard box trick’, as the box provides a barrier to sickness.

A slide show gave us an insight into how rose plants are produced and Simon explained how it takes 18 months to produce a single plant for sale. During July and August there are up to 250,000 rose plants growing in the fields around the Garden Centre.

Visitors are welcomed. See the website for further information and for advice on growing roses contact support@peterbealesroses.com The vote of thanks was given by Celia Dalton.

KELLING PROBUS CLUB

Kelling Probus Club held its monthly meeting on 15 March at The Dales Hotel, Upper Sheringham. As always we enjoyed a tasty lunch with lots of chance to catch up with other members and enjoy the fellowship which is an integral part of Probus. The purpose of this month’s meeting was to hold our AGM and to plan our next year. Chairman Ken Murray welcomed members and thanked everyone who had made his year both enjoyable and satisfactory. Ken reported that membership had remained static- we had the death of Geoff Mather and illness of several members to note but fortunately we had gained some new members in the year. He stressed that continued recruitment of new members was essential for the life of our Club. Treasurer Tony O'Shea reported a year of steady income which balanced the outgoings. Secretary Andrew Hyatt reported a year of excellent after lunch speakers and thanked Mike Clayton for his hard work in arranging them.

Chairman Ken then handed over the Chairman's chain of office to Mike Clayton for 2018/19. Mike promised the Club that he hoped to provide a similar year to Ken's, and thanked Ken for a great year of fellowship and speakers.

Other officers were Vice chairman Andrew Hyatt, Treasurer Tony O'Shea, Secretary Ken Murray, Press & Recruitment John Whittington. It was agreed that the Club should have its own website to tell people about its aims, programme and officials. Our Club meets on the third Thursday of each month for lunch and a speaker. Next month’s speaker is Andrew Hyatt talking on 'Wine'. For enquiries on membership and how our meetings work call John Whittington on 01263 820333.

A Concert full of light

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society return to Cromer Parish Church on Saturday 28 April at 7.30 pm to present a wonderful programme of 21st century choral music celebrating the theme of Light. This may be a 'modern' music concert but guaranteed to be highly melodic and no fear of dissonance! This promises to be an evening of beautiful music with a line-up of top class soloists.

Musical Director, David Ballard says "This might just be the project I’ve worked on as a musician that I’m most excited about. I don’t care if you like choral music or not you need to come and listen. Great contemporary music, great soloists, and a choir who want to show you they love it. Be there."

David's enthusiasm is infectious and no wonder when you consider that the concert will feature a major work by Howard Goodall CBE who will be familiar to many as the presenter of many television programmes with a musical theme and as the prodigious composer of musicals, choral music and a multitude of television theme music such as Blackadder, Mr Bean and, possibly, most popular The Vicar of Dibley. Eternal Light: A Requiem was originally commissioned by Rambert Dance Company as a choral-orchestral-dance piece and has quickly earned a firm place in the choral repertoire.

Also on the programme are works by the widely performed American composer Morten Lauridsen, the Norwegian Ola Gjeilo and the Devon-based composer of sacred music Graham Keitch whose works are rapidly becoming popular and frequently performed by choirs and in cathedrals around the world. This is a concert not to be missed.

Nuclear Room and new Tornado Cockpit go on show at centenary of the RAF which was formed on Radar Museum for new season

A restored Nuclear War Reporting Room, a Tornado Cockpit and a German WWII aircraft canon are among the exciting new attractions at the RAF Air Defence Radar Museum as it opens for RAF 100 Anniversary season.

The popular RAF Radar Museum, near Horning in The Broads, opened on Saturday 24 March for the 2018 season. The once top secret radar establishment occupies the site of the world’s longest continuously operating radar station and is the biggest museum in North Norfolk. The museum has doubled its opening times and will now be open Tuesday, Wednesday,

Thursday and Saturday through to the end of the autumn half term at the beginning of November.

New this season is the restored Nuclear Reporting Cell, which tells the story of how the base was used in the Cold War to warn and track a nuclear attack and fallout if one occurred. The Nuclear Reporting Cell was formerly staffed by the Royal Observer Corp (ROC) and will have giga counters and fall out protective suits on display. It will include information on warning times of attack and monitoring and surveillance. It will also have information on the Dooms Day Clock used to measure the likely risk of a worldwide nuclear catastrophe. Also recently acquired is the German Dornier 217 canon retrieved from the Dornier which was shot down by a crew from 68 Fighter Squadron, based at Coltishall, on the night of 30 July 1942 over Salthouse Marshes.

A Tornado Cockpit joins the two other cockpits this season and will be housed with the Jaguar cockpit in the ‘hanger room’. The Tornado saw active service in the first Gulf War and the aircraft’s full history will form part of the display. The museum will be celebrating the

1 April 1918. The museum will have a timeline showing the important milestones in the RAF and Radar and the base’s own history. The museum will also have a number of special activities throughout the year to celebrate and commemorate the anniversary. The museum will have 3 special exhibitions this year, building on the success of its Soviet era art exhibition last autumn, which brought lots of first time visitors to the museum, especially women and children.

Over the winter the museum has been busy doubling the size of its reception and shop area. This has enabled the museum to sell some exciting and unique new gift ranges and second-hand books. A new disabled access ramp has also been installed so that everyone can now use the same entrance.

Museum Manager, Gregory Hayman said ‘The museum has added another room to its existing 20 rooms meaning that we can have more exciting and interesting exhibits on display from our collection of over 10,000 items. We believe that we have things of interest here for everyone, from those who served in the forces to people who want to know about the part radar played in the Battle of Britain and terrifying reality of the Cold War and the threat of nuclear destruction.”

The museum has also improved its offer to schools, producing learning journeys and materials that will feed into more parts of the school curriculum.

Says Gregory ‘The role that the museum plays in developing our offer as a provider of education materials is important in encouraging young people to think about careers in science and technology.”

The museum is open from 10am - 5pm from Saturday 24 March and in addition to the regular open days, is also open on Easter Bank Holiday Monday and the two May bank holiday Mondays as well as the summer one.

Saucy seaside fun is among the summer drama mix at Sheringham Little Theatre

Seaside postcard sauciness will be delivered to summer audiences at Sheringham this year as part of the annual cocktail of professional drama.

The Little Theatre is closing in on 60 years of staging a repertory season featuring a group of actors tackling a varied batch of plays – and is one of only a handful of venues still doing it. The 2018 season, the 58th at the town, features the traditional mix of farce, romance, thrills and murder.

Theatre director Debbie Thompson said “We always aim to provide something for everyone in our summer season. This year with are opening with a bang by staging a rip-roaring farce with a six-strong cast. But also watch out for a risqué raunchy seaside comedy in What the Butler Saw and a great finale with TV writer Kay Mellor’s A Passionate Woman. We are really looking forward to the whole season.”

The 2018 summer drama line up is: • Don’t Dress for Dinner – a frenetic farce of multiple affairs and mistaken identity set in 1980s France by writer Marc Camoletti. July 26 – August 1. • Double Trouble – Recently-widowed Phillipa enlists down and out Duncan to impersonate her late husband in a romantic thriller. August 3-8. • Living Together – Raffish librarian Norman’s behaviour gets out of hand during a weekend at his sister-in-law’s house – part of the Alan Ayckbourn Norman Conquests comedy trilogy. August 10-18. • What the Butler Saw – a bawdy farce with seduction, undressing and cross-dressing in a psychiatrist’s clinic. Playwright Joe Orton’s last play before he died. August 22-29. • A Passionate Woman – Kay Mellor’s gentle TV comedy drama about a mother reliving her

long-lost youth. August 29 – September 5. Among the cast will be theatre staff member Steve Banks who is also an actor and writer and played a variety of roles in last summer’s season.

“A friend for life” is how Ronald Bloxham describes North Norfolk health

Ronald was referred to the service through an integrated care coordinator from his GP practice to have social contact as he lived alone and also to support him to use his laptop to send emails and use the internet.

other’s company immensely and look forward to seeing each other.

During each visit there is a mutual respect and a great deal of chatting about all sorts of topics. Richard describes his visits as giving him a “different dimension to my working week and it’s nice to give something back”. They both agree that they equally get something out of the befriending partnership and that it shouldn’t just be one sided.

Richard applied to become a volunteer with Voluntary Norfolk’s North Norfolk Health Volunteers Service. He applied as he wanted to have that connection with an older person again after having such a close relationship with his grandparents who he has sadly lost. He also wanted to ‘give something back’ and find a work/life balance.

Following their introduction, Ronald joyfully reports that they have become “great friends”, quickly developing a great rapport. His partnership with Richard has helped him settle into residential care, a decision he made following a hospital stay, with Richard continuing to visit him. They both enjoy each

“Volunteering is always a two-way street” says Natalie Hickman, the Voluntary Norfolk coordinator who made the introductions and supports the partnership. “Ronald and Richard

Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club On Tuesday 6 February, the Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club was given a lively and most informative talk by Dr Paul Richards, entitled ‘England and the Hanseatic League: the Wash Ports’. Dr Richards, an honorary alderman and former mayor of Kings Lynn, focussed his talk on Kings Lynn and on Boston, while bringing some other ports, notably Hull and Ipswich, also into the picture.

It was amazing to discover how important both Kings Lynn and Boston were in past centuries, both for the export of cloth and wool and for the import of goods such as furs, wood and wax from Hanseatic ports in the Baltic. These ports were significant for trade as they both had large hinterlands and this fact is reflected in the history of these towns’ buildings and churches.

are a great example of how a befriending volunteer not only enhances the life of the person they’ve visiting, but can make a big difference to their own life too! Whilst there is a lot of loneliness across Norfolk and beyond, it doesn’t take a lot of time or effort to transform the situation for both the volunteer and the person they visit”.

Voluntary Norfolk is keen to hear from anyone across North Norfolk, who would like to become a Health Volunteer. If you are 18 years old or over, enjoy meeting and spending time with other people, and can put aside an hour or so a week to change a life and make a new friend, please contact Natalie Hickman on 01263 519454 or natalie.hickman@voluntarynorfolk.org.uk

The Hanseatic League was renewed in 1980 with the name Hansa and has 190 member towns from 16 different countries, including four towns in the UK. Two of these are the Scottish ports of Aberdeen and Leith. After time for questions, the Chairman thanked Dr Richards for a most enjoyable and well-illustrated talk.

Our next meeting at The Links Hotel, West Runton, will be on Tuesday 3 April, when (after lunch) our speaker will be Chris Boxall on the subject of ‘Houghton Hall and Walpole’.

If you are a retired or nearly retired professional or business man and would like to join us at one of our future meetings you will be warmly welcomed. Please contact our lunch secretary Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or visit our website www.candsprobus.club for more information.

Our customers also donated £461.07 towards The Lifeboats, supported Rachel Bird, checkouts, to raise £294.23 for Race for Life and one of our managers, Jonathan King, to raise a massive £727.23 for Motor Neurone Disease.

The foyer has also been used by all the groups selling the Carnival 60/40 raffle tickets.

Bags of Help, the Tesco Bags of Help scheme has been a fantastic resource for so many local causes this year. The winners have been: £4,000 – Royal National Lifeboat Institute, Sheringham Girl Guiding, Sheringham Demential Friendly Community, British Red Cross, Playing For Cake, Sheringham Woodfields School. £2,000 – Rescue 17 Ponds in 2017, About With Friends, Cromer Christmas Lights, Roughton Under 5s Playgroup, Cromer and Sheringham Art and Literacy Festival,

Apply online at www.tesco.com/bagsofhelp to take part in this scheme. Voting takes place over two months by our customers. This money comes from the Government bag charge. It’s great to see the money go to causes that are close to home. It really makes a difference. If you need help applying there is a dedicated helpline on 0121 2375780 or visit tesco.com/bagsofhelp

During the year we have also been involved with local groups providing raffle prizes, volunteering, supporting events, reading at school, supporting school projects, Farm to Forks, etc. We have made special links with Sheringham Dementia Friendly Community, Sheringham Primary and Sheringham Woodfields Schools, About With Friends, Love for Leo, Mr and Mrs Hancock and Splash Leisure Centre. At Christmas we provided Christmas lunch at The Morley Club for those alone on Christmas Day.

Our customers have given so generously to the Food Bank throughout the year.

Thank you to all our customers who have been so generous and supportive to all concerned. It is SO appreciated. Sue Lowe, Community Champion for Tesco Sheringham

Two Trips around Norfolk with Tea and Cakes
