SHERINGHAM HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

Spring Show and Primrose Day On Thursday, 19 April Sheringham Horticultural Society will be holding its Spring Show when members will be competing in 21 classes including daffodils, tulips, other flowering bulbs, primroses and pot plants.

There will also be a talk by Charlotte Philcox, local garden designer and consultant, who will be giving advice on growing vegetables.

The show and talk will be held in St. Joseph’s Parish Hall, Sheringham, and the doors open at 7pm. The talk starts at 7.30pm and judging for the show starts at 7.45pm (when staging by members must be completed).

Hopefully there will be plenty of primroses on show because Thursday 19 April is recognised as National Primrose Day. This was the day in 1881 when Queen Victoria’s favourite Prime Minister, Benjamin Disraeli, died. The Queen sent a wreath of yellow primroses with a note referring to them as being ‘his favourite flower’. For many years thereafter primroses were placed on Disraeli’s monument on 19 April as an act of remembrance.

So why not come to our show and talk on 19 April and perhaps wear a primrose buttonhole in honour of National Primrose Day? Queen Victoria would have been amused. Bob Wilkinson

FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT

Living in Bangladesh, Asina, aged 28, is a widow with three children. She works very hard at any job she can - looking after goats or cows, or labouring in the fields. Anwar, her eldest son would like to start school, but he must help his mother, struggling to earn enough.

"When my husband died, poverty paralysed me. People say my land is good to make a tea garden, but I have no money to do that."

The Fairtrade charity, Traidcraft Exchange, works alongside smallholders providing training on cultivation and good agricultural practice. For many others, like Asina, learning new skills means they can leave poverty behind.

And with the magnificent help of the people of North Norfolk we are helping to support this work.

We raised £350.03 from events at St.Peter's and St.Andrew's Churches in Sheringham in Fairtrade Fortnight, and together with the profits from stalls in North Norfolk, since Christmas, we have sent a cheque for £1000.03, to Traidcraft Exchange. AND the UK Government will double all donations to this charity until 11 April!

Another top orchestra on its way to North Norfolk

Concert-goers can expect to enjoy a fantastic evening in a wonderful church setting

Music lovers can look forward to a fabulous evening when another leading orchestra heads to North Norfolk next month.

The City of London Sinfonia will be playing at St Catherine’s, Ludham, on Saturday, 21 April at 7.30pm, with Bach’s Double Violin Concerto one of the highlights. Other works will include compositions by Tabakova, Purcell, Pärt and Mozart.

Tickets for the concert, which is being promoted by the Ludham Festival, are available from Ludham Butchers or by calling 01692 678060. They cost £12 in advance (£15 on the door) and children aged 16 and under can attend for free.

Cllr Becky Palmer, NNDC Portfolio Holder for Culture, said “The combination of a great programme, a world-class orchestra and this venue is sure to make for an amazing evening.

“We are pleased to be supporting this event, including by helping to keep ticket prices down, and concert-goers can expect to enjoy a wonderful performance.”

Orchestras Live North Norfolk is behind a series of high-quality concerts, including a recent performance by the London Mozart Players at St Peter’s, Sheringham. The series is being supported by North Norfolk District Council in partnership with Orchestras Live and local community organisations, with funding from Arts Council England.

WHY CHOOSE SILVER SIL VER & W ARD WARD SOLICITORS SOLICIT ORS in 201 ? 201 ?

“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difficult difficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offers offers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT APPOINTMENT,, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. offer fer the same I advise new clients to “shop around as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can of expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norfolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.

“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 201 to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.

Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 01263 823465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk

Humphry Repton’s landscapes celebrated 200 years after his death

Saturday 24 March marked 200 years since the death of Humphry Repton, the last great landscape designer of the eighteenth century.

this September. As a great artist himself, I am sure Repton would have been pleased to see his work captured in this way.”

Tyrone McGlinchey, Managing Director of IGPOTY said “Simon Lea’s photograph encapsulates the vision of Repton and the majesty of his designs. It is a beautiful composition, which is balanced with the people in the middle ground and the beautifully shaped trees beyond.”

To celebrate his life and work, the National Trust teamed up with International Garden Photographer of the Year to host a special category in this year’s photography exhibition that capture Repton’s landscapes today.

The winning image, announced on the bicentenary of Repton’s death, is ‘The Last Rays of Sun’, taken in Repton’s Warley Woods in the West Midlands by Simon Lea.

The winning entry will be displayed at Sheringham Park from Saturday 1 September to Sunday 28 October. A selection of the best entries to the Repton Landscape category, specially created for this anniversary year, will also be on display.

The quality of the photographic entries received demonstrates just how well Repton’s work is still appreciated 200 years on from his passing, with images of landscapes including

The Last Rays of Sun . Simon Lea

the National Trust’s Sheringham Park and Wimpole Estate, as well as Woburn Abbey and Gardens, among the entries.

Malcolm Fisher is the National Trust’s Visitor Experience Manager at Sheringham Park “We were delighted to see so many entries showcasing the work of such an important figure in British landscape history. We’re looking forward to seeing the winning images displayed Music Matters is proud to bring the Chamber Orchestra Ensemble at Sheringham Park East to Aylsham to help commemorate the life of Humphry Repton, the celebrated 18th century garden designer who is buried in Aylsham Parish Churchyard.

Music Matters brings the Chamber Orchestra Ensemble East to Aylsham’s Repton 200 Festival

As part of the Repton200 Festival, which takes place nationwide this Spring, we will hear a performance of a range of works written in Humphry Repton’s lifetime : the genius of Mozart, the prolific Joseph Haydn, known as the father of the symphony, and the passion of Felix Mendelssohn.

Sheringham Park is widely regarded as the best example of Repton’s work in the country and one which he described himself as his “most favourite work”. This is some accolade as Repton was involved in excess of 400 commissions during his 30 year career. It’s therefore only fitting that Sheringham Park takes the lead in the National Trust’s celebrations of the bicentenary of his life.

The International Garden Photographer of the Year Exhibition is just one of the ways Sheringham Park is celebrating Repton’s life this year. Visitors will also be able to enjoy a programme of events, including a series of guided walks, a lecture and a living history weekend that all focus on Repton. The year of celebrations will culminate with a light show in November that will illuminate Repton’s landscape in a way that has never been seen before.

Evening concert Friday 25 May at 7pm, Thorpe Market Church, NR11 8UA Evening concert Saturday 26 May at 7pm, West Runton Church, NR27 9QT conducted by Philip Adams, piano accompaniment by Michael Finnissy

Following on from the success of the most recent national CoMA concert (Contemporary Music for All) at West Runton Church, in spite of the March snow drifts, Cantamus will be performing a new repertoire of music ‘From the Bavarian Highlands’ by Sir Edward Elgar, one of the greatest and best known English composers, and ‘Folk-Song Settings’ by Percy Grainger, an Australian composer who played a prominent role in the revival of interest in British folk music in the early years of the 20th century.

Percy Grainger’s folk song settings, mostly from Lincolnshire, are some of the most sensitive and beautiful ever written. Grainger collected with wax-cylinder recording equipment, and always credited the singers in published copies. The English Folk Song and Dance Society initially refused to house this material, and it was deposited in the Library of Congress in Washington USA. Fortunately, copies are now held by the British Library in London.

The folksong elements in Elgar’s 'From the Bavarian Highlands’ are made up, but no less enchanting. Later on Elgar’s celebration of England, although held to be somewhat jingoistic, is actually melancholic and equivocal. We must remember that Elgar’s genius was first recognised in Germany, perhaps in the Bavarian Highlands!

Cantamus began as a community choir at St Margaret’s church in Thorpe Market, part of a strong musical tradition that has flourished in the church for a number of years. Under the Directorship of Philip Adams the choir has successfully been expanding its repertoire and scope. Those wishing to join the choir are welcome to get in touch. We rehearse on Thursday evenings 7.30pm - 9.30pm.

Norfolk's canal included in national boating challenge

Restoration of a unique Norfolk canal has been so successful that it has been included in a national challenge for boat users.

Enthusiasts from all over England and Wales are set to navigate the upper section of the North Walsham and Dilham Canal in a bid to gain a new Inland Waterways Association (IWA) award.

The IWA, a charity which works to protect and restore the country's 6,500 miles of canals and rivers, has included a one-mile section, from Ebridge Mill pond to Bacton Wood lock, in its Silver Propellor challenge, aimed at encouraging members to explore some of the country's lesser-known waterways.

Ivan Cane, chairman of the North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust, hopes the challenge will help promote the canal beyond Norfolk. "The biggest reward for all our volunteers’ work in opening up this section of the North Walsham and Dilham Canal is to see boats using it. We are thrilled that our local Norfolk canal has been included in this national scheme," said Mr Cane.

‘Do Not Resuscitate’

Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr We are introducing a small credit-cardsized card for our clients who make a Lasting Power of Attorney for Health and Welfare (“LPA-H+W”) or an Advance Decision (also known as a “Living Will”). In the same way as a kidney donor card, this can be carried at all times to alert medics to the existence of the LPA-H+W. When found, it can be acted upon quickly, especially in an emergency. Also, it is a good idea to register your LPA-H+W with your GP and medical Consultant. These two steps should ensure that you are not resuscitated if you do not wish to be.

Increasingly, care plans of care home residents and hospital patients note any decision on their resuscitation; however, a recent report found that up to 40,000 patients a year across England were having Do Not Resuscitate (“DNR”) orders imposed on them without their families being made aware.

A DNR order refers to a decision by medics not to attempt cardiopulmonary resuscitation (“CPR”) if a patient’s heart stops beating or they stop breathing. It does not cover other treatment decisions. CPR in real life is not the same as on a television drama and is often a massively

Survival

physical process which, as well as possibly being futile, can result in broken ribs, bruising and pain and much reduced quality of life. Yet many families see it as something that should be done to save their loved one. For many, not performing CPR means giving up and accepting death.

Factors affecting a patient’s decision on the withholding of life-sustaining treatment include the acceptance of the inevitable progression of disease, trust of doctors, the feeling of being a burden to others, symptoms and the preference to die naturally. A medical clinician has the responsibility for deciding whether a particular treatment is or is not necessary and appropriate for the patient; this includes the pros and cons of CPR. There is a presumption of patient involvement and that of their family wherever possible.

It is not lawful for a medic to treat a patient who has capacity and refuses treatment. Nor is it lawful to treat a patient who lacks mental capacity if he has made a valid Advance Decision to refuse it. Neither, is it lawful to treat a patient if he has made a LPA-H+W (with the relevant powers given) and the attorney (acting in their best interests and as their proxy) refuses such

I’ve braved the rotten weather, especially the snow, so in the warm, dark soil I can now begin to grow.” Diane Berthelot

treatment. If a clinician treats a patient against such a decision, and if that decision is known about by the clinician, it is a criminal offence. Sensitive consultation with and support of families about DNR prevents trauma and distrust of the medical system, thereby enabling the patient to have a ‘good death’.

Returning for its 5th year, the festival that has been dubbed ‘North Norfolk’s friendliest event’, is returning home to the Village of Trunch, the place where it all started.

Trunchonbury opens at 12pm on Friday 24 August and closes at 10pm on Sunday 26 August.

Tucked away in a pretty paddock, the theme of this year’s festival is the ‘Wizard of Oz’ and the Trunchonbury team really do believe ‘There Is No Place Like Home’.

Geared very much towards entertainment for the whole family, the festival has plenty for everyone. On the main stage are some of the finest bands from around the region and a few showstoppers from further afield. Headlining on Friday are Backbeat Soundsystem, an 8 piece Funk Reggae outfit from Cornwall. On Saturday, the stage will once again bounce along to the Jive crafted stylings of Mr Bruce and DJ Chucks AKA The Correspondents and Sunday night will see the return of one of the Trunchonbury family as local musician Wayne Beauchamp and Those Deadbeat Cats bring the festival to a final crescendo. Definitely not to be missed there are plans afoot to get the whole arena dancing to the bands classic take on traditional and not so classic Rock‘n’Roll.

Elsewhere in the festival you will find the JR’s Children’s field with a huge array of events taking place throughout the day and into the early evening. Story-telling, crafting, creepy crawlies, discos and tons more for toddlers

upwards. There’s even an area for the really tiny ones to enjoy themselves, all within sight of the main stage, so you won’t miss any of the bands as your young ones play.

The Disco Shed is back for miniscule discos, ‘Blakeys’ the Bus that is really a Bar will be open for business every day and there’s a wide selection of food stalls in the onsite village that cater for even the pickiest of eaters. You’ll even be able to get a morning Bacon Butty with a cup of tea from stall in the campsite. In the Acoustic tent some unbelievably talented acts will once again grace the stage and on Sunday, the mighty BBC Introducing will stage a takeover, bringing yet more unmissable talent to the field. Headlining this year are incredible Fairgreen Ceilidh Band on Friday, the blindingly good Swing Caravan on Saturday and the frenzy that is the Spanish guitars of De Fuego on Sunday. And this year, we are introducing the Busk Stop. Situated just outside the main gate it will be a chance to hear some of the bands who have play in the acoustic stage, and maybe even some from the main stage, as they return to their busking roots. As with last year, you will also find within the tent the Real Ale and Cider Bar, guaranteed to make you feel like you are down at your local watching the best band that has ever played there.

The Performing Arts Stage once again bring you everything from dance workshops and comedy to drum lessons and recycled art. Frank Morris brings his unique, vibrant magical art to the festival and The Norwich Swing Dance Collective will have your twirling around the tent. Keep an eye out for the timetable near the tent so that you don’t miss a thing. In the evening the tent transforms into the Dance Tent with some of the Fattest, Funkiest DJ’s we’ve ever booked! Disco, Motown, Soul, and the Cheesiest of Happy House are amongst the genres that provide the perfect playlist to finish the day, there’s no need to stop dancing when the bands finish, just get yourself over to the tent!

Also returning to Trunchonbury will be the Healing fields with a raft of Holistic Healers on hand to sooth away aches and pains and the Vets, for all your pet related questions, There will be stalls in our market and the funfair is on sight with traditional rides as well as Snowy Mountain and an inflatable slide. On Sunday we will encourage all the men to don a dress again for ladies day and ladies, this year it’s all about hats and hair for you. We can’t wait to show you all what we have been working on, so make sure you grab your early bird ticket as the offer runs out at the end of April. www.trunchonburyfestival/tickets

Noninvasive Face Lifting

“I don’t want a facelift, but can’t you just tighten up some of this saggy skin a little?” It is a question asked in aesthetic practices around the world. With new advances in technology and treatment protocols, answers are shifting from a tentative “maybe” to a qualified “yes.”

“My patients love that they can have a treatment in the morning and attend a social function in the evening with no trace of having had a medical procedure—just nicer looking skin.” Says Dr Sanjay Gheyi, Medical Director and Laser Surgeon at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic.

Gravity wins out over time and with facial volume loss, untreated skin begins to sag and lose its elasticity. Advancements in technology have made it possible to tighten skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and sagging without undergoing surgery. “This precision contributes to both safety and effectiveness, and because this is accomplished without damaging the superficial layers of skin, patients experience no down time.” Not only do we help wrinkling, it also decreases pore size, brings out a better texture, and a better appearance to the skin. Unlike lasers, it can be used on all skin colours, even very dark skin.

“Very elderly patients with severe sagging and wrinkles are, in general, suboptimal candidates for the modest to moderate improvement possible with noninvasive tightening devices,” says Dr. Gheyi. “Younger to middle-aged patients with early laxity and wrinkles are better candidates.” However skin condition can be a better indicator than age. “If the skin is in good condition, even older patients will show visible improvement,” he says.

We use radiofrequency and ultrasound waves for no-downtime rejuvenation treatment, which stimulates the fibroblasts to produce more collagen. Patients love the treatments because they are comfortable

without pain medication or numbing creams. With this technique, patients see some instant improvement with increased collagen regeneration and skin firmness that becomes visible over the next 3 to 4 months and continues for up to 12 months.

It can tighten loose skin on any area of the body such as tummy and arms and can be used with ultrasound to reduce areas of localized fat that cannot be improved with diet or exercise.

So what are the alternatives - We offer full range of services from non-invasive treatments and liquid facelifts to cosmetic surgery but most people today want natural results without going under the knife. We have another innovative treatment called a 3-D Facelift where we use a patients own fat cells to provide facial volume and lifting. More on that in our next article.

MPs join forces with Norwich City FC to demand safe standing

A cross-party group of local MPs is backing Norwich City FC’s call for the introduction of safe standing areas at Carrow Road.

Currently 2-3,000 fans, about 10% of the crowd, stand throughout matches in the Lower Barclay Stand at the football ground. In the past children have been forced to stand on their seats to get a clear view, putting them at risk of falling. The club is concerned about this safety risk.

The top two tiers of English football are not allowed to provide safe standing areas under the terms of the Football Spectators Act of 1989 and subsequent 1990 Taylor Report recommendations.

Norwich City FC wants to see a change in the legislation so that safe standing areas can

be introduced, as is normal practice in many European countries. The club argues it would allow those who wish to stand to do so without blocking other fans’ views or posing a risk to other fans’ safety.

In December a Norfolk Safety Advisory Group decision resulted in the club relocating 17 under-16s and 18 accompanying adults from the popular lower tier of the Barclays stand to other parts of the ground as a result of standing on seats.

Norman Lamb (Lib Dem MP for North Norfolk), Clive Lewis (Labour MP for Norwich South), and Chloe Smith (Conservative MP for Norwich North) have written to the Home Secretary asking her to meet with them to discuss changing the current legislation that prevents safe standing areas.

Mr Lamb, a Norwich City FC season ticket holder, said “It’s great that fans are passionate about the game and there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be allowed to stand if they want. But there’s clearly a safety issue here and if other countries can introduce sensible measures that allow all fans to enjoy the game, surely it’s within our capabilities to do the same. I totally understand the sensitivity of the issue because of the tragedy of Hillsborough but the evidence seems clear

that you can have properly developed safe standing areas.”

Ms Smith said:“I would want all Canaries supporters to enjoy the game, and stay safe. Given that the club is backing change, and that many fans like to watch in their own way in any case, it may be time for the law to be reconsidered. I hope the Home Secretary gives this the careful attention it deserves.”

Mr Lewis, who has a season ticket in the Barclay stand at Norwich City said “Safe standing at Norwich is a no brainer. It’d help the club better meet their safety obligations and many fans I’ve spoken with want to see it happen as well. I’d also expect the introduction of safe standing to make match days more fun for groups of fans who want to stay together for games and hope that in the long-run it can lead to a reduction in the cost of getting into a match.”

Steve Stone, Managing Director at Norwich City FC, said “We firmly believe that our fans should have the option to stand safely at Carrow Road during games, which can be best achieved by a change in legislation to permit ‘safe standing’ solutions proving so successful at Celtic FC and numerous German clubs.”

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Stephanie gets lots of calls from people either hoping to give a cat a new home or needing their cat to come into care. She also receives lots from people looking for advice some of which she cannot help with as the person really needs to speak to someone in the veterinary world. At this time of year Stephanie knows from previous years that she will get a lot more calls than usual relating to missing cats. Most of these calls will relate to young cats and kittens that have not been neutered. The unneutered females start to call and the unneutered males will travel many miles to find a mate. Often the callers will be unaware that kittens can reach sexual maturity and breed from four months old, not ideal as the kittens have not finished growing themselves. Even cats that have only known a life indoors will take any opportunity offered to escape to find a mate. Although some do return home, this is not always the case, as cats can become disorientated and lose their bearings and often end up as strays needing to be taken into care. This may be as a heavily pregnant young female, a young mum with kittens or a young male many miles from his original home. Unless they have been micro chipped there is very little chance of us being able to find the original owner who will always wonder what happened to their young cat. This is one of the reasons we do promote neutering and why we are only too happy to help those on low incomes and benefits with the cost of the operation with one of the vets we use and have accounts with. Stephanie will also advise the benefits of having a cat/kitten neutered to avoid the heartache of worrying what has happened to a much loved member of the family. The males are less likely to roam, thus reducing the risk of a car accident, less likely to fight, which reduces the risk of them getting injured or contracting a serious disease, less likely to spray or develop tumours of the testicles and they will make better pets, being more likely to be homebodies. Benefits for the females are not becoming pregnant, the cat will not wail and call every three weeks, is less likely to contract diseases spread by bites and mating behaviour and will not develop cancer of the ovaries or uterus. There is also a reduced risk of developing mammary cancer. Every year we take in lots of young cats that have lost their way but we also receive calls from owners who had not realised that their female kitten could

get pregnant at such a young age, and have not recognised the significance of its strange behaviour, when it is calling. Any kittens born as a consequence may come into care for re-homing, be checked by our vets, vaccinated, chipped, treated for fleas and worms and given a voucher to be neutered when old enough and we will help with getting the mother neutered. If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 it (to see Taz, a lovely young cat if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is who loves a fuss for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign. If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

North Norfolk to host national Blue Flag awards ceremony Blue Flag winners from around the country to be invited to Cromer. The annual awards ceremony which sees Keep Britain Tidy hand out Blue Flags and Seaside

HEADS AHEAD Ladies & Gents Hair Designers

20 Beech Avenue, Sunway Park Sheringham NR26 8NS

Awards to local authorities will be held in Cromer in May. Last year North Norfolk District Council had its most successful set of Blue Flag results when the district secured six flags – at East Runton, West Runton, Cromer, Mundesley, Sea Palling and Sheringham. The awards recognise the top tier of English beaches and are given out only to those sites that have the highest quality of water, facilities, environmental education and management, with superb levels of cleanliness and safety.

The awards will be hosted on Cromer Pier on 17 May. The suggestion that Cromer could host the event was made during last year’s Blue Flag ceremony, which was held in Bournemouth.

Cllr John Lee, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “The Blue Flag is the quality mark

for our beaches and they mean that those visiting them can be sure that they are clean, safe and meet the highest environmental standards, as well as the tough international bathing water quality standards. “I’m delighted that Cromer will host the Keep Britain Tidy awards event.”

Cllr Becky Palmer, Cabinet Member for Leisure & Culture, said “The fact that winners from around the country will visit Cromer is a reflection of the high standards delivered across North Norfolk’s beaches.” Allison Ogden-Newton, Keep Britain Tidy’s Chief Executive, said “Every year the launch of our Blue Flag and Seaside Awards is a chance to celebrate the fantastic beaches around our coastline that are so loved by locals and the millions of tourists who visit them each year.

“We are delighted to be holding this year’s celebration event in Cromer and would like to thank North Norfolk District Council for hosting it.”

Hedgehog Haven

Many thanks to everyone who came to visit us over Easter at North Walsham Garden Centre. It is nice to know so many people are interested in the decline of hedgehogs and what can be done to help them survive. Rory (pictured) was a star. He came to me in October as a hoglet so is used to being Certified handled. Unfortunately, he has a deformed front leg, so couldn't cope in the wild so it is ok for him to be handled. The ones that are due for release, I tend to do everything they need for their well-being, but try to have as little contact as possible so their transition back into the wild works. Born free, release free.

Weather by Ned Nimbus

The past three months’ weather has been mixed but since 'The Beast From The East' the trend has been unsettled and cold because the jet stream has been continually to the south of us, also bringing record breaking cold conditions to Europe and miserable weather to areas that are normally settled and mild. This is not climate change merely a variation in weather conditions which happens in all climates. The next three months will see a slow erratic move away from cold, unsettled conditions as the jet stream moves back to a normal northerly route. However, there is a lot of cold air in the Northern Hemisphere to be warmed up, so the process will be quite volatile as the cold air and the heat of the sun combine. It will take the majority of the next three months to complete the transition into a decent run of summery conditions. Ned Nimbus

Great British Prom announces Aerosparx display at Blickling in August

The Great British Prom at Blickling in August is planning a huge celebration of the RAF centenary – and the latest guest to the party has been announced as Aerosparx, the only team in the world to combine formation flying, aerobatics and night time pyro! They will be joining the RollsRoyce Spitfire to combine the best of the old and the new, bringing their own unique specialities to the skies above Blickling. The scene is set and, with the National Symphony Orchestra leading the musical programme of well-known RAF inspired music, Cranwell Military Wives Choir and Soprano, Philippa Healey, Blickling will be saluting all that is best about our great Royal Air Force. The Summer’s evening will begin with a poignant and emotive fly-past by the RollsRoyce Spitfire; as the iconic engine echoes around Blickling Park, the crowd will be waving their flags and the fitting tribute to current and past RAF servicemen and women will begin.

Arctic Winds

When freezing cold winds blew in from Russia, Blasting our temperate shores, The chaos and mayhem it left in its wake Appalled all who ventured outdoors! Snowdrifts and black ice abounded, Causing disruption and havoc galore. Vehicles and people were stranded, Making even short journeys a chore. Power went down and water pipes burst, Causing even more grief than before, With temperatures well below freezing, People struggled to get to a store. Now that it’s gone, we’re all trying hard To get back to normal once more, To get on with life the way that it was Before Arctic winds paid us a call! Frances Wraight

pressure was mounting on the youngest member of the team, nineyear-old Percy Dyter to perform well. Despite this, the boys skied brilliantly, kept their calm, and fully deserved their second-place position.

The school team was beaten to top place by an experienced Swiss team from Aiglon, a school which is based in a Swiss ski resort where the children can ski every day. However, despite the high competition the boys went on to beat 22 other UK-based schools into second place.

Richard Brearley, Deputy Head of Gresham’s Prep said “I was delighted to hear that our U13 ski team was so successful at this event, particularly as it was their first time at the championships. It is testament to all their hard work and training and they should be very proud of their achievement.”
