Sheringham Carnival Launch Night Success In a brand new initiative Sheringham Carnival put out an invitation to traders in and around Sheringham to attend its launch meeting. The Town Council, Chamber of Trade and local dignitaries were also asked. The purpose of the event was to provide an insight into Sheringham Carnival. Carnival Chairman, Stuart McClean introduced Carnival treasurer, Les Popham who gave a visual demonstration of a year of Carnival. Next was Graham Deans, Carnival Events Manager and owner of The Lobster Inn. He outlined how Carnival functions logistically, running through the regulatory issues and forward planning needed to stage

each event.

He explained the requirement for time-consuming preparation of risk assessments and detailed ops for every event; the necessity for a qualified Health and Safety expert as well as a highly trained First Aid team; logistic experts, administrators, designers – the list goes on. Expert preparation is the key.

Some key members briefly described their roles. Ben Sewell - First Aid, Christine Hendry - Programme and Marketing, Della McClean Carnival Queen and its traditional role.

Graham’s last word was to explain Carnival’s constitutional premise ‘To promote Sheringham as a holiday resort, to organise an annual Carnival and other events, and to support local charities & organisations with the aim of fostering the town’s community spirit’. He reiterated that Carnival recognises a strong need to maintain the growth in visitor numbers to Sheringham, whilst causing minimal inconvenience to the town’s businesses and residents. Continued from front cover... Before operating a short Q&A from guests he outlined two considerations Carnival will make in 2018. To overcome access issues traders will be issued with an access pass. They will also receive a ‘sorry letter’ giving details of road closures so everyone is aware and can take the opportunity to optimise trade. The consensus was that it had been a useful event, to be repeated annually with an interim meeting in November, after the Lights On, for evaluation purposes.

Sheringham Carnival calls out for votes to bag a share of Tesco’s bag fund Sheringham Carnival is bidding to bag a massive cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative.

Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 raised from carrier bag sales in Tesco stores awarded to local community projects. Three groups in every Tesco region have been shortlisted to receive the cash award and shoppers are being invited to head along to Tesco stores to vote for who they think should take away the top grant. Sheringham Carnival is one of the groups on the shortlist, promoting Sheringham as the “go to” seaside town in North Norfolk. We provide and promote Carnival events in the town, not only in Carnival week but throughout the year. Voting is open in all Tesco stores throughout March and April. Customers will cast their vote using a token given to them at the check-out in store each time they shop.

Tesco’s Bags of Help project has already delivered over £43 million to more than 10,000 projects up and down the UK. Tesco customers get the chance to vote for three different groups every time they shop. Every other month, when votes are collected, three groups in each of Tesco’s regions will be awarded funding. Alec Brown, Head of Community at Tesco, said “We are absolutely delighted to open the voting for March and April. There are some fantastic projects on the shortlists and we can’t wait to see these come to life in hundreds of communities.”

Groundwork’s National Chief Executive, Graham Duxbury, said “We’ve been thrilled to see the diversity of projects that have applied for funding, ranging from outdoor classrooms, sports facilities, community gardens, play areas and everything in between. We’re looking forward to learning the results of the customer vote and then supporting each group to bring their project to life.” Funding is available to community groups and charities looking to fund local projects that bring benefits to communities. Anyone can nominate a project and organisations can apply online. To find out more visit www.tesco.com/bagsofhelp.

Sheringham Shoal Community Fund grant supports Coastwatch

The weekend’s entertainment begins with the Crab and Lobster Festival Grand Opening Concert at Cromer Pavilion Theatre. The fun continues at Evington Lawns, Cromer, on May 19th and 20th and on Sunday 20th on Sheringham High Street and promenade where the high street will be closed off for a day full of fun for the whole family to enjoy.

From this look-out the Sheringham Coastwatch team keep a visual watch over the sea, beaches and cliff tops surrounding the seaside town. It also monitors the radio channels used by shipping.

This year’s festival will be held from Friday May 18th to Sunday May 20th.

The weekend will be packed full of Crab and Lobster events, including live music from the Shanty Men in The Lobster public house garden on Sunday, as well as live heritage demonstrations, entertainment from Razz the Clown and local food and craft stalls.

Daffodil

I am a wind blown daffodil, but I’m not sad or glum, the weather has changed recently and out has come the sun. When springtime comes round again I will have grown quite tall, Aubrieta is jealous because she is so small. The little flowers look up at me, I feel I am their Queen, I will not end up in a vase, but in the garden, seen. Diane Berthelot

As a result of a grant from the Sheringham Shoal Community Fund, Sheringham Coastwatch has been able to update its equipment in the watch station situated high on Skelding Hill. Sheringham Coastwatch Station had been operating with fully functioning but elderly radar, Automatic Identification System (AIS), radio and weather equipment. The maintenance and servicing costs required to keep the equipment operational had become extremely expensive. Following a successful application to the Sheringham Shoal Community Fund, all equipment has been replaced, along with aerials, sensors and a purpose built console to house it all.

The project cost ÂŁ5,500; Sheringham Shoal Community Fund provided 50% whilst the generosity of the public funded the remainder. From application to the first operational watch using the new equipment took less than six months. The new equipment will help the Sheringham Coastwatch team perform their important role in marine safety along the North Norfolk coast more effectively for many years to come. The design, planning, construction and installation was undertaken by a team of volunteer watch keepers, with technical support from KM Electronics Ltd of Lowestoft who supplied all the new equipment.

WHY CHOOSE SILVER SIL VER & W ARD WARD SOLICITORS SOLICIT ORS in 201 ? 201 ?

clint_brown_1@hotmail.com

“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better. I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difficult difficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offers offers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT APPOINTMENT,, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. offer fer the same I advise new clients to “shop around as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can of expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norfolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.

“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 201 to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.

Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 01263 823465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk

Top quality billiards in North Norfolk

The Alby and District billiards and snooker league, has this season seen success in billiards at both county and national level.

In December, 17 year old Harley Dyson of Aylsham (left) won the Norfolk County handicap billiards championship (held at the Maltings club in Kings Lynn) defeating Kings Lynn's Steve Kirk in the final.

In April Harley was runner up in the English under 19s championship, losing a close fought final to Kings Lynn's Nathan Boughen. Harley is showing lots of promise for the future having only taken up playing Billiards less than a year ago.

Billiards Championship, making two 50 plus breaks in the final to defeat Norwich’s Allen Cheetham.

On a national Level David Nichols, from Erpingham, had a good run in the English Amateur Championship. David reached the semi-final David & Darren played in Darley Dale, Derbyshire, but lost the 4 hour match 662–1,120 to Middlesbrough's Darren Kell. David made breaks of 58, 68, 68 and 106. Darren had breaks of 56, 57, 64, 65, 70, 76, 77 and 163.

In February Ian Dennis (centre), from Overstrand, won the Norfolk County Grand Masters (over 40s)

Although David was below par in this match, only a few nights before he had made the highest ever break in the Alby leagues 86 year history with a magnificent 195 break in the very last game of the season.

Garden Centre Overstrand events line up Following the success of last years events, Garden Centre Overstrand has 5 markets planned this year and they are sure to be bigger and better than before.

Have you received poor financial advice? Amanda Nudds, Solicitor, Hayes + Storr Many of us will have taken financial advice from banks and other financial institutions at some time, placing trust and reliance on the professional advice we receive. But what if the advice received was not in your best interest and the financial arrangements you have in place are not suitable for your needs? How do you know if your investments are suitable if the provider no longer offers advice? Have you paid another advising firm to put right mistakes? Have you received financial advice from some of the well-known high street banks such as HBOS, Natwest, HSBC, Barclays and Norwich & Peterborough in the past? Amongst others, these large corporations left many of their clients without advice after withdrawing from providing advice and have been fined/heavily criticised for the way their advisors have taken advantage of their customers. Your legal matters in safe hands Hayes + Storr Solicitors handle a whole range of personal and family legal matters with care and professionalism.

Anyone advising you in relation to financial products and services has a duty to act in your best interests and by failing to properly consider your individual circumstances and needs, they breach that duty resulting in you being entitled to pursue the institution for their negligence and recover compensation for any loss you suffer as a result.

What constitutes poor advice? Poor advice covers a wide range of issues including: • Receiving unsuitable advice resulting in you choosing arrangements not suitable for your needs • Risks not being properly explained to you (or in some cases, at all) • Deliberately withholding information which may influence your decision on a particular arrangement • Only providing you with a limited range of investments linked only to the institution you are seeking advice from • The ongoing service and costs incurred in relation to the advice you received It may be that the products you were advised on were suitable but the institution no longer has an advisor or has failed to carry out its regular contractual review to ensure that these still meet your needs.

When you think back to your appointments

did your advisor properly consider your financial circumstances and what you wanted? Your advisor should take everything into account before recommending a solution suitable for your needs and thereafter should explain the risks and likely performance so that you can make an informed decision. In a recent case, clients had received financial advice which should have been regularly reviewed. It was not until six years later that they discovered they were paying charges for a service they had never received.

What should I do if I suspect I’ve been misled? You could be entitled to a claim for compensation which would include recovering any fees you paid for receiving the negligent advice, any losses on performance of your chosen arrangement plus interest. These claims are time limited and therefore if you believe that you may have been mis-sold financial products and received poor advice you should contact us as soon as possible. We can complete an initial review of your current arrangement and advise you further.

This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice.

If you would like further advice on this matter please contact Amanda on 01328 863231. If you require advice on any other legal matter call 01263 825959 or email law@hayes-storr.com.

Sheringham in Bloom

Sheringham in Bloom is now working toward the planting of the flower displays in all our planters around the town, and hope to have this completed by the end of May. Also ongoing throughout the year is the weeding and looking after of the half a dozen beds and gardens that we look after, including the roundabout and Otterndorf Green. The hanging baskets will be going up around mid-June.

As well as all that we are at the time of year when we approach all our sponsors who have been so very supportive of us in the past. Sponsorship money is used solely to provide a good display of flowers in our planters throughout the year and we hope this helps to make Sheringham a truly attractive town. If anyone is interested in sponsoring one of our displays they can start from a little as £25, and if you would rather just make a small donation this would be most gratefully received.

Thank you to everyone who supports Sheringham in Bloom, and we hope the coming summer will be a colourful one.

Steve has recently performed a one man show of ‘Lady Bracknell’s Confinement’ at Cromer Community Centre and Thorpe Market Church to great acclaim, but this time, he has the challenge not only of a German accent, but also of Dutch Elm disease in his wooden leg! Herr Flick has heard that there is a valuable portrait of the fallen Madonna, by Van Klomp somewhere in the town of Nouvion. He suspects that some of the German officers know where it is and is determined to get it for himself. As he visits the café owned by Rene Artois, he little suspects that not only is the portrait hidden in the café, but two British airmen are also hiding there. Will Herr Flick find the portrait? ….or the airman? … or both? Will the imminent arrival of his arch-enemy, General Von Schmelling prevent him finding anything at all? All this and much more will be revealed in this hilarious production. This well-known and much-loved comedy will be on at the Sheringham Little Theatre from 22 to 26 May. Performances start at 7.30pm, matinee on Saturday 26th 2.30pm. Tickets £12 (under 16s £8) from the Theatre Box Office 01263 822347 or book on line at www.sheringhamittletheatre.com

Scouts St George’s Day Celebration Despite a rather worrying weather forecast of sunshine and thundery showers, it remained clear and sunny for the North East Norfolk District Scouts St George’s Day Celebration at Stalham on 22 April.

“We were able to celebrate with young people and their parents and grandparents, and Scout Leaders from across Norfolk attending, not just from the Broads area but from Norwich, north Norfolk and the west of the county” writes Lorraine Henriksen, District Secretary of North East Norfolk District Scout Council.

March to High School Playing Field

“We marched from Stalham Academy (Junior) School to Stalham High School’s playing field, and back again.

“During the parade to the High School, the formal salute was taken by North East Norfolk District Commissioner, Paul Henriksen, accompanied on the dais by Dr Duncan Edmonds, current Chairman of Stalham Town Council, Mrs Betty Jackson, North East Norfolk District Vice-President and also Councillor Richard Shepherd, Chairman of North Norfolk District Council and Councillor David Ward, Chairman of Broadland District Council.

“The welcome to the gathering at the High School was given by Dr Duncan Edmonds. An ex Scout himself, he donned the traditional Baden-Powell style felt Scout hat that was originally worn by most boy scout troops until the middle of the 1960s – known as a campaign or 'lemon squeezer' hat! “The greeting and Service was then taken forward by Rev Paul Cubitt, District Chaplain & Vicar of St Nicholas North Walsham with support and enthusiastic help from Reverend Richard Jackson from Stalham, using the theme of ‘water’ (particularly relevant to the host Group,1st Stalham Sea Scouts).

St George’s flag presented to West Runton Group

Several young people from Stalham Beavers, Cubs and Scouts participated by offering their reflections and prayers on how water is important in all of our lives.

“Also during the celebration, District Commissioner Paul Henriksen explained the importance of St George’s Day and in particular St George’s Day Awards which were being awarded to Leaders and adults within Scouting at Windsor Castle on St George’s Day”.

From the North East Norfolk District Marylyn Evans from Aylsham received the Silver Wolf - the unrestricted gift of the Chief Scout which is only awarded for service of a most exceptional nature and June Preston from Blakeney received the Bar to the Silver Acorn having worked for scouting for 45 years - the Bar to the Silver Acorn was awarded for similar distinguished service after being awarded the Silver Acorn Silver Acorn Awards seldom awarded for less than 20 years’ service, which was specially distinguished and appreciably better than outstanding, were presented to Andrew Fryer from North Walsham, Chris Nott from West Runton and Michael Cole, also from West Runton.

Mike Cole decided that he would prefer to attend the District event at Stalham with Stalham Brass Band under his home Group, West Runton, rather than the direction of Tim Thirst attending Windsor for his presentation, and District Commissioner Paul Henriksen was delighted to therefore be able to explain that his Group described Michael as “the glue which holds the Group together” - Michael was always dependable and can be relied upon to be present at all important Group events and activities, making sure that such events are arranged and organised to run effectively He is a very practical and helpful Leader who readily sees when something needs doing and will attend to such matters without prompting.

The Young People then participated in their Act of Commitment - a Stalham Beaver gave the Beaver Scout Thought and all of the Beavers joined in the

renewal of the Beaver Promise by ADC Beavers. Alison Smith, a Stalham Cub, read the Cub Scout Law and all of the Cubs joined in the renewal of the Cub Scout Promise, led by ADC Cubs and Andy Harrison, a Stalham Scout, read the Scout Law and all Scouts Formal salute is taken (including ex Scouts and Leaders) joined in renewing the Scout Promise, led by DC Paul Henriksen.

During the singing of the hymn “Michael Row the Boat Ashore”, the collection from members of each Scout Group, together with contributions from the local dignitaries and VIP guests present, was brought forward.

1st Stalham Sea Scouts had nominated the Charity, #smileforharry to receive proceeds from the Celebration - Harry has a tumour in his spinal cord, which after two major operations and 12 months of chemotherapy, is still growing. As the chemotherapy hasn't worked all treatment has stopped. Harry needs life saving Proton Therapy Treatment abroad. His parents urgently need support in raising funds - the cost is going to be around £70,000 https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/protons-for-harry

While we sang the hymn “When the Saints go Marching in” the Colour party gathered and Groups collected their standards and flags and took up position for the National Anthem.

Following this the St George’s Flag, which had been brought to the gathering by last year’s recipients, 1st Blakeney & District Group, was presented by the District Commissioner to 1st West Runton Group who will retain the Flag during the year ahead. Music for the parade, during the celebration service and following the Service was provided by the Stalham Brass Band under the direction of Tim Thirst”.

Applications now open for Holt Festival-Sir John Hurt Art Prize Leading north Norfolk festival also announces Open Studios scheme One of the east of England’s top art prizes, the Holt Festival-Sir John Hurt Art Prize, is now inviting entries for the 2018 exhibition. The cash prize has been increased to £1,750 and the winning entry will also be exhibited at the prestigious Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in Norwich.

The Sir John Hurt Art Prize is open to artists everywhere and in previous years there have been entries from all over the UK. All types of visual art are welcome.

The judges will select a shortlist of 25-30 which will be listed on the festival website and exhibited at the Auden Theatre, Holt between 21-29 July, with the winner announced at a private view on the evening of Sunday 22 July. The exhibition is part of the Holt Festival Art Trail that also takes in many other galleries and exhibition spaces around the town.

Last year’s competition once again attracted an extremely high standard of entries with the winner coming from Norfolk artist Chloe Steele. Her pencil drawing, ‘Beginnings End’, was unanimously selected from over 250 entries and announced by Lady Anwen Hurt (see attached image). Festival organisers have also announced the first Holt Festival Open Studios, a great opportunity for artists within 15 miles of Holt to invite the public to their studios. It will run from 21-23 July between 10am & 5pm and a map detailing participating artists will be available to download from www.holtfestival.org . Open Studios are FREE to visit and offer people the chance to meet artists in their own studios to talk about their work and buy original artworks directly from their creators.

Holt Festival Fine Art Director James Glennie commented ‘The Holt Festival-Sir John Hurt Art Prize and Open Studios are great opportunities for both emerging and established artists. The Prize becomes better known each year with entries coming from further afield and the quality getting better each time, making the new team of distinguished judges job ever more difficult. There are so many talented artists in the area and we hope that the Open Studios will enable many of them to reach new audiences as well as giving the art loving public the opportunity to meet and learn about our local artists’.

And what a ‘momentous afternoon’ it was when, on 7 April, ‘Three’s Company’ came to High Kelling Village Hall with their evocative performance based on the actual diaries of five diverse women in Europe during World War I, and the devastating effects on their lives.

In August 1914, we were introduced to Sarah, middle aged and living in Scotland, to Elfriede the 12 year-old German schoolgirl, to Laura the New Yorker married to a Polish aristocrat in Poland, to English Florence, by then 27 years old and already a nurse with the Russian army, and to Olive, a rather brash young Australian. As each of their stories unfolded in chronological order, and through the dramatic portrayal of each of the characters, we learned of their lives as they became aware of the changes and conflicts surrounding them, and the dramatic and dreadful events of their own personal war. We heard of the horrors they encountered during their journeys through war-torn Europe, the terrible decisions to be made, the fear, the joy of finding love and the heartbreak of losing it, their thoughts on the darkest of days, and ultimately how their valiant efforts and experiences changed their lives forever.

During the course of their war, each of the five women became involved with the Red Cross, witnessing their valiant aid work at first hand. It was this connection that led the ladies of ‘Three’s Company’ to compile and perform ‘Momentous Times’ as a celebration of that work, the final performances of which will be at West Acre Theatre and Gressenhall Church on 11 November.

At the end of an emotional, sometimes funny but always thought-provoking afternoon, we were proud to have raised the grand sum of £400 which has been donated to the British Red Cross. Our grateful thanks go to the ladies of ‘Three’s Company’ for their brilliant and unpaid performance, to everyone who came to support us, and to the Committee who provided such delicious home-made cakes to go with our tea! KELLING PROBUS CLUB Kelling Probus Club held last month’s meeting at the Dales Hotel, Upper Sheringham on 19 April.

Thirty three members and guests enjoyed the customary tasty lunch and fellowship. After lunch, Chairman Mike Clayton introduced our speaker, Andrew Hyatt.

Andrew gave us a fascinating talk on 'Wine', starting with choosing a wine and going through all the various factors in enjoying and appreciating wines of the world. Among the reasons mentioned for our choices were value, presentation, preference for red white or pink and our own particular tastes. He then covered comparison, perceived quality, market price and stated that he saw no reason to give much more than £10 for everyday drinking and maybe buy something special for the odd occasion. Andrew then covered the production angle and what happens in the vineyard to produce very drinkable wines. He then covered 'Terroir' which is the word that covers all the natural aspects of grape production, such as climate, including sun, wind, frost and mist. Included in this he said that altitude, drainage, south facing aspects and type of soil all had an influence on the end product- the better wines were often produced in soil which was not particularly fertile or damp so that the vines produced more grapes and less leaf.

We were then told of the natural ingredients which produce the odour, colour, maturity and appearance of wines. Andrew then produced bottles of two Cabernet Sauvignon wines, one from 2017 costing less than £5, and the other from the early 2000s, costing £40. All members sampled both and Andrew talked us through the changes that a wine undergoes as it matures. He was thanked by members for his talk.

Speaking of maturity, we always welcome new members who are retired or semi-retired - contact John Whittington on 01263 820333 for details of our Club. Sheringham Independent 487

MPs continue to demand safe standing legislation reform Following the Government's rejection of Norwich City FC’s campaign to introduce safe standing at Carrow Road, local MPs led by Norman Lamb are seeking a meeting with the Minister for Sport and Civil Society to demand the Government reassesses its position. Last month Norman Lamb, Clive Lewis and Chloe Smith wrote to the Home Secretary urging the Government to change current legislation to allow for safe standing in the top two tiers of English football, in support of Norwich City FC.

In response, Tracey Crouch, the Minister of Sport

and Civil Society, has written to Mr Lamb saying that ‘the government remains unconvinced by the case put forward to re-introduce standing accommodation in football grounds covered by the all-seater requirement’, citing the ‘history of disorder and stadium disasters specifically related to football’ in the UK. She went on to say that ‘policies such as the all-seater requirement have made a positive difference to the football culture here and continue to do so.’ The MPs are now seeking a meeting with Ms Crouch to further press the DCMS on this issue. Mr Lamb said “Effective government policy should

Mr Pastry has also been in the wars as he had a serious round worm problem resulting in sickness and diarrhoea. A few days on special food for sensitive stomachs and treatment for the worms, put him on the road to recovery. Mr Pastry was very nervous when he first came in and we believe he may have been ill-treated in the past. He has responded well to the gentle care he has received since joining us and now looks forward to a cuddle from his carers.

Mr Lewis said “Safe standing at Norwich is a no brainer. It would help the club better meet their safety obligations and many fans I’ve spoken with want to see it happen as well. I’d also expect the introduction of safe standing to make match days more fun for groups of fans who want to stay together for games and hope that in the long-run it can lead to a reduction in the cost of getting into a match.”

appointments were rearranged to enable David (our vet) to operate on him that afternoon. He has now joined us and will be on cage rest for several weeks before we can put him up for adoption.

Firstly, an update on two of the cats mentioned last time. Dixie has now had a dental and, apart from the broken tooth, once under the anaesthetic it was obvious several other teeth also needed to be removed. She is now minus 10 teeth in total and has recovered well from her operation. This very friendly girl is now up for adoption.

A new arrival last week was Connor who has come into care via our vets. His owner had given him to a friend when she became too ill to look after him. Unfortunately, this was not the best decision she made at the time as, when he broke his leg, it was a neighbour of the friend who took him to the vets for treatment. We are not sure whether or not he had been in an accident or been kicked but, as the original owner had not formally handed him over to the friend, she was able to sign him over to us. He was in a great deal of pain so

always be based on evidence. For the issue of safe standing, the evidence points to a compelling case for change, so the Government is effectively ignoring the evidence. My office is seeking a meeting with the Minister to discuss further.”

Plans are now in progress for our Spring Sale, which is slightly later this year. As well as the usual Cats Protection goods, Raffle, Tombola, Bric-a-Brac, Books etc, Bren and Jenny have been making lots of lovely new things to sell and Andrea has been busy toiling over a hot stove making some of her lovely cakes, etc. We hope our friends and supporters will be able to join us on 26 May in St Benet’s Hall, North Walsham from 9.30am to 12.30pm

Following on from the success of the most recent national CoMA concert (Contemporary Music for All) at West Runton Church, in spite of the March snow drifts, Cantamus will be performing a new repertoire of music ‘From the Bavarian Highlands’ by Sir Edward Elgar, one of the greatest and best known English composers, and ‘Folk-Song Settings’ by Percy Grainger, an Australian composer who played a prominent role in the revival of interest in British folk music in the early years of the 20th century on Friday 25 May at Thorpe Market Church at 7pm and Saturday 26 May at 7pm at West Runton Church (conducted by Philip Adams, piano accompaniment by Michael Finnissy).

Bespoke Weddings

Percy Grainger’s folk song settings, mostly from Lincolnshire, are some of the most sensitive and beautiful ever written. Grainger collected with wax-cylinder recording equipment, and always credited the singers in published copies. The English Folk Song and Dance Society initially refused to house this material, and it was deposited in the Library of Congress in Washington USA. Fortunately, copies are now held by the British Library in London.

The folksong elements in Elgar’s 'From the Bavarian Highlands’ are made up, but no less enchanting. Later on Elgar’s celebration of England, although held to be somewhat jingoistic, is actually melancholic and equivocal. We must remember that Elgar’s genius was first recognised in Germany, perhaps in the Bavarian Highlands!

Cantamus began as a community choir at St Margaret’s church in Thorpe Market, part of a strong musical tradition that has flourished in the church for a number of years. Under the Directorship of Philip Adams the choir has successfully been expanding its repertoire and scope. Those wishing to join the choir are welcome to get in touch. We rehearse on Thursday evenings 7.30 – 9.30pm.

Treatments to get you ready for summer Summer is round the corner and the sooner we start to prepare for it, the more time we have to show results. Here is a selection of our treatments that you can benefit from. Our therapists offer treatments that can be nice and relaxing experiences and do not cost a lot. FACE - Why not book a diamond microdermabrasion and combine it with a gentle chemical peel and cool light for a glowing skin before your holiday? This will give you a well deserved ‘me time’, a bit of pampering and also benefit your skin health. If you wish to take the next step- a laser facial may just be the thing you need for skin toning and brightening. Further up the scale are our laser resurfacing treatments that do require a little recovery time in exchange for better, more visible results or to address specific skin concerns such as acne scars or lines and wrinkles. Of-course we are experts in natural looking injectable treatments and fillers carried out in a safe and comfortable manner. If it is a major change you are after- a wide range of cosmetic surgical treatments are also available.

VARICOSE AND THREAD VEINS - Changing options for the treatment of unwanted veins. Days of open surgery, prolonged bruising and painful recovery are long gone. Today non-invasive methods are replacing surgery at a very fast rate. So much so that NICE -The National Institute of Clinical Excellence has updated its guidelines on the treatment of varicose veins. It has recommended Endovenous laser treatment as the preferred option, foam injections second and surgery where the first two options are not suitable or declined. So come and see us to help you get rid of those unwanted veins anywhere on your face or body. SAFE AND EFFECTIVE LASER HAIR REMOVAL AND TATTOO REMOVAL FOR ALL SKIN TYPES - Why it is a great idea to see us. When it comes to laser hair and tattoo removal it is the Wild West in this country. There is no shortage of new places opening up at every corner. We are seeing increasing number of patients who are either dissatisfied or have been harmed because of poorly trained and unregulated providers and cheap copycat or downright dangerous and unapproved machines. As we all know one size does not fit all. There is simply no machine, which is suitable for every person’s needs. With this in mind we have invested heavily in modern high-end medical machines that have undergone rigorous testing and evaluation. All our therapists also undergo rigorous initial and on going training in laser safety.

We have helped thousands of patients remove unwanted hair, ingrowing hair and rashes, pseudofolliculitis barbae (razor bumps) and even helped patients with polycystic ovaries. Thanks to our proven gold-standard lasers and extensive experience we are able to treat every skin type- from very fair to dark skin patients. FAT AND CELLULITE REDUCTION - This is the perfect time to consider laser liposuction for reducing unwanted areas of fat and stubborn cellulite. The procedure is carried out purely under local anaesthesia on a walk-in, walk-out basis and most patients are recovered by 3-5 days. Medically supervised weight loss treatments and non-surgical body contouring are also available.

REDUCE ExCESSIVE UNDERARM SWEATING - Higher temperatures mean worsening of sweating issues for some of us. If you suffer from increased underarm sweating, worry about sweating through your clothes, work in close contact with others or in hot conditions or have to make public presentations then you may consider treatment. We offer injectable treatments and also revolutionary laser sweat reduction procedure to destroy sweat glands.

Did you know we can remove unsightly moles and blemishes without the knife? We offer treatment options for a variety of conditions so check our website out for more information at www.coltishallclinic.co.uk or call 0800 0430737.

Enjoy The Summer with Blakeney Rowing Club A warm welcome to all those who have joined Blakeney Rowing Club recently.

For those who have not, a great summer of activity is close at hand. Come and join people of all ages who love nothing better than to row from Blakeney towards the Point or, if the tide is right, towards Cley. These expeditions are not to be missed and provide an excellent source of outdoor exercise in great company. No previous experience is necessary and you will be coached by safety aware, experienced rowers. See the club website at rablakeney.wordpress.com for some great pictures of club members, known as ‘Crabbers’, in action either rowing or refurbishing the boats. The club has two skiffs – Hoi Larntan and Bluejacket – both made by Club experts and helpers. They each hold four rowers and a cox and are suitable for recreational and competitive rowing. Typically, an outing will last for about two hours with breaks for conversation and refreshment. A sunny shore is a favourite place for a coffee stop. An evening row may well end with Crabbers adjourning to a local pub. There are competitive events scheduled throughout the season, but there is no requirement to participate in these. The main pleasure lies in discovering a new sport in beautiful surroundings. You are entitled to three sample rows before deciding whether to join. You will always be looked after. If you are interested in experiencing rowing, socially or competitively, contact Tom, Captain of Rowing, on 01263 761570. Other information will be on the club website shown above.

Leave winter behind. Join the Crabbers.

New beach litter boards will help marine and coastal environment

The number of #2minutebeachclean boards along the North Norfolk coast has more than doubled.

Five new boards, which encourage people to spend 2 (or more) minutes picking up marine litter and plastic pollution, are being introduced at Walcott, Cromer West, East Runton, Sheringham East and Sheringham West. The boards are sponsored by North Norfolk District Council and each has a custodian who looks after it day to day.

The custodians of the new boards are the Kingfisher Café in Walcott, the Reef Stop Café in Cromer, NCI Coastwatch at East Runton, The Mo in Sheringham and the RNLI in Sheringham.

The new arrivals join four existing boards which have been operating previously at West Runton, Cromer East, Mundesley and Sea Palling. These are funded by a combination of businesses, charities, NNDC and other authorities. They also have custodians.

Cllr John Lee, Leader of North Norfolk District Council and Conservative Group Leader, said “The idea behind these boards is simple and it is very straightforward for people to take part. But despite its simplicity, the impact is enormous both in terms of keeping individual beaches cleaner and showing that individual people can have a real impact on such an important problem.”

Cllr Sarah Butikofer, Liberal Democrat Group Leader at North Norfolk District Council, said the North Norfolk element of #2minutebeachclean had started at West Runton and had proved a “fantastic initiative”.

“Dog walkers, and families in particular, have really embraced the project, with some groups turning it into a new beach activity when they visit.

“This enthusiasm for helping to clean up our beautiful natural environment has led to some environmental inspection ratings of zero litter on the beach. So I am delighted to see it rolled out to new areas.”

Five new #2minutebeachclean boards for North Norfolk

The stated aim of the #2minutebeachclean campaign, which has a strong worldwide social media presence, is “We believe that every piece of litter removed from the beach matters. So it doesn’t matter if you do 2 minutes or 30. Each and every piece of marine plastic removed from the beach is a piece that will no longer go on to kill.”
