Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment
Members of the world-famous Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (OAE) had a very busy time in Sheringham over the Bank Holiday weekend.
Musicians from OAE played in St David's Nursing Home, which was greatly appreciated, and they also took their music into the Ladybird Nursery School.
Then on the Saturday, the OAE gave a Tots Concert in Sheringham Community Centre. There, children between 2 and 5 years were taken on a wonderful musical journey, joining in with clapping and singing, in between learning about the different orchestral instruments, and hearing music by some of the great composers. This was a brilliant introduction to classical music for very young children, all of whom seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves.
The Orchestra is involved in the celebrations to mark the 600th anniversary of the first Paston letter, with a concert at St Nicholas’ Church, North Walsham, on 1 July, which will include the premiere of a speciallycommissioned piece written by Norfolk-based composer Sarah Rodgers. Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment
Your legal matters in safe hands Hayes + Storr Solicitors handle a whole range of personal and family legal matters with care and professionalism.
Continued from front cover... The OAE recognises the great importance of music in education. They have a very successful programme reaching up to 10,000 people across the country each year, often in areas where children have little or no access to live classical music, and playing music with very young children right through to university students and teachers.
I very much hope that we can get the Orchestra back again to Sheringham in the future to teach more of our youngest residents about the joys of music.

CROMER AND SHERINGHAM PROBUS CLUB
On Tuesday 1 May, our speaker, after lunch at the Links Hotel, West Runton, was Mr Arthur Bailey on “Confessions of a Coach Driver”, though the talk was far less lurid than the title suggests!
Arthur spoke about the many trials and tribulations of his long career as a coach driver -- for example, driving a group around Ireland with a tour ‘guide’ who got them lost on some very narrow rural roads, or once (in England) having to wait for seven hours while his passengers went fishing! Arthur gave us quite an entertaining talk and he was thanked on behalf of the members by the Chairman, Jack Broughton.
In June we will have our AGM (no guest speaker) but on Tuesday 3 July we will again have a speaker, Mr Roger Townsin, on The Russian Far East’.
If you are a retired or nearly retired professional or business man and would like to join us at one of our future meetings you will be warmly welcomed. Please contact our lunch secretary Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or visit our website www.candsprobus.club for more information.

Council charges for DIY waste unlawful, claims MP
A local MP has challenged Norfolk County Council following its decision to impose charges on household waste - a move he claims is unlawful.
A press release issued by NCC in February announced that it is no longer free of charge to deposit small amounts (up to 80 litres or 1 item) of household DIY waste (fixtures and fittings to a house, such as doors and fence panels) at household waste recycling centres.
The council claims there is no legal requirement to provide free disposal because DIY waste is classed as construction and demolition waste, which must be paid for by the service user. This means that if a householder has a broken door panel, they are now required to pay if they want to dispose of it via the appropriate channels, even though its removal is not part of construction in their house.
However, Mr Lamb, the Liberal Democrat MP for North Norfolk, disputes the legality of this move.
After being contacted by constituents about the new charges, Mr Lamb asked the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for clarification on the definition of household waste and whether NCC’s classification of household waste is lawful.
DEFRA’s response states that in 2015 the Government made an order ‘prohibiting local authorities from charging householders to deposit household waste at civic amenity sites or household waste recycling centres.’
DEFRA set out the definition of household waste, according to section
WEYBOURNE WI – ALL AT SEA
75(5) of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, as ‘waste from domestic properties, caravans, residential homes and premises forming part of a university, school, other educational establishment, hospital or nursing home.’
Mr Lamb said: “I’ve challenged Norfolk County Council over their decision to impose DIY charges on the basis that it is unlawful and will lead to an increase in fly tipping. The council needs to think again – they state that they are treating all DIY waste from a household as ‘construction and demolition waste’ but this simply cannot be justified under the terms of the legislation.”

Following DEFRA’s response, Mr Lamb has written to the Managing Director at NCC asking for a full review of the proposal.
Members of Weybourne WI spent a very entertaining afternoon when Robert Smith talked about his life as Harbour Master at Wells.
Robert began by describing his early career and how his family have been involved with the sea for over 300 years.
He told us how the number of harbours decreased along the North Norfolk coast, as local landowners reclaimed land for farming and how the quayside at Wells has changed over the centuries. He explained how the Harbour Commissioners Committee originated.
No Job too big or too small Bathrooms - Kitchens Fencing - Carpentry Electrics - Plumbing Tiling - Decorating Patios - Jet Washing All aspects of Home Improvement
clint_brown_1@hotmail.com
We were intrigued to hear tales of smuggling in Wells and how there are still many old tunnels running beneath the town and also how the men of Wells earned the nickname ‘Bite Fingers’.
Although Wells was once a busy shipping harbour, the main use now is for leisure.
There are 14 people working permanently in the Harbour Office, with 5 extra staff during the summer months and the office is very busy.
As there is no Government funding, income is generated in a variety of ways, including car parking fees. Robert is keen to provide employment for as many local people as possible. It was obvious that he thoroughly enjoys his job.

Norfolk artists get set to invite the public into their studios
Hundreds of artists are preparing to throw open their studio doors to the public as part of Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios 2018.
The event, firmly established as one of the biggest open studios schemes in the country, is celebrating its 24th anniversary this year.
Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios provides the opportunity for artists to show and sell their work directly from their studios.
It also encourages everyone, from ardent art-lovers to the curious first-time visitor, to get out and about, explore the county, see art and meet artists in the informal surroundings of their work space.
More than 420 artists will be taking part this year across 241 venues throughout Norfolk. Visitors to the free event can see art in a range of settings, from professional studios to garages and barns, watching art as it happens.
As well as the hundreds of artists taking part, 16 Norfolk schools will be exhibiting and 15 Art Trails will be running, allowing audiences to visit a number of artists in a particular area, stopping at studios and local attractions along the way.
Throughout the duration of the scheme many of the artists will be holding additional events, demonstrations and workshops
Sheringham Independent 488
Artists taking part are working in a diverse range of art forms and techniques, including wood turning, sculpture, glass work, papercutting, painting, textiles, jewellery, printing, ceramics and mosaic.
Some of the artists are first timers, some have been exhibiting for a few years and many have been involved since the very first year.
Rose de Lara, Administrator of Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios, said “Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios has been celebrating the diversity and talent of the county’s visual artists for more than twenty years. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to see and meet artists working in a range of disciplines from a variety of inspirational spaces - from traditional studios to churches, garages, barns, garden rooms and old factories. “This year there are specialist artists and crafters in all kinds of painting, printmaking, ceramics, textiles, sculpture and much more. We encourage everyone to get out there and explore the county, get inspired, meet the artists and buy work directly from where

it’s made! “We’d like to thank all of the artists for making this great event happen, and all the funders who help support the Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios scheme.”
Studios are free to visit and all details, including studio opening days, directions, Art Trails and additional events and demonstrations, can be found in the Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios brochure and website from early April.
Brochures can be picked up from participating artist’s studios, Tourist Information Centres, Libraries, Cafes and various art venues across the county. The event runs from 26 May until 10 June. For more information visit www.nnopenstudios.org.uk

Sculpture to promote the importance of protecting and improving the local countryside Holder for the Environment, said “There are many benefits to this kind
North Norfolk District Council has commissioned local artist Kate Munro to work with children from Sheringham Primary School to create a sculpture made from (cleaned) beach litter. The project is designed to raise awareness of the issues rubbish causes marine life.
After the official unveiling to the public on earlier this month, the sculpture was on show at the Blue Flag Awards on Cromer Pier.
It will now go on a tour of the district’s beaches as part of NNDC’s summer holiday Blue Flag beach events. The council’s Countryside Ranger team will be actively engaging visitors to these beaches about the effect litter can have on marine life.

Henleys Estate Agents wins 3 awards at The ESTAS, the most prestigious awards in the UK property industry sponsored by Zoopla
The Cromer based estate agency received 3 awards at the prestigious ESTAS Customer Service Awards for 2018 including Best in Norfolk for Lettings at the biggest awards in the UK property industry. The winners were announced by Phil Spencer, the TV property expert at a lavish luncheon & ceremony at the Grosvenor House, Park Lane London attended by 1,000 of the UK’s top property professionals.
The awards, celebrating their 15th year determine the best estate and letting agents in the UK based purely on feedback from customers who are asked a series of questions about the service they have received from their agent, over 36,000 surveys were completed by customers during the competition.
Phil Spencer, who has hosted the ESTAS every year since their inception in 2003 said “The ESTAS are special because shortlisted and winning firms are selected purely on the service you deliver to your clients. Real feedback from real customers experiencing real service, I don’t think there can be a greater honour in the industry than to receive an award based on that mantra.”
Jeff Cox, director of Henleys said “We are absolutely thrilled to be recognized at this year’s ESTAS. It means so much to us as we know it’s our customers who have judged our performance. We take our levels of customer service very seriously because we know clients have a choice. We have always been very proud of the personal service and this proves we are delivering what we promise.”

Top Awards Celebration at Muckleburgh
On Saturday 28 April 80 Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers were presented with their Bronze, Silver and Gold Chief Scout Awards, and District Youth Commissioner Ed Cubitt received his DofE Gold Award at our North East Norfolk District Top Awards Celebration at the Muckleburgh Collection on the coast at Weybourne.
Ovenclean will transform your oven and put the sparkle back into your kitchen!
District Secretary Lorraine Henriksen writes “Because these awards are special, District Commissioner Paul Henriksen explained that we try to not just make a presentation of a certificate, but to make an event which is special and memorable, fun and educational and we most definitely fulfilled all our objectives.

By mid-afternoon we were getting really sorry for Mike the driver of the Armoured Personnel Carrier who was getting wetter and colder with every trip! The Leaders and more importantly, the young award holders were all having too much fun to even notice that the sun wasn’t shining. Even the families were standing outside taking pictures and watching their children going around the course from the viewing platform and were also able to tour the museum which had 25 working tanks and over 150 military vehicles, plus thousands of related items on display while the young people were completing their activities. It all goes to show what a success the day was.
Our young people had an amazing experience all round and following the activities the presentations were made in the cafeteria by Sir Michael Savory, owner of the museum. He was joined by Robin Baden Clay and his wife Sue – Robin is a grandson of Sir Robert Baden-Powell the founder of the Scouting movement. They had managed to find a slot for us in their busy diaries and had travelled from Dorset up to Norfolk especially for our event.
Sir Michael Savory kindly let us use his premises for the day and is raising funds for a new Tank Shed therefore we held a bucket collection on the site on the day and we are pleased to report that with the help of the families who attended we have been able to contribute generously to this fund - the success of the day was reflected in the donations we received.
Robin & Sue Baden Clay also managed to fit-in a visit to check-out the new West Runton Group HQ Extension which they missed in January!

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Firstly, an update on the cats mentioned last time. Dixie and Mr Pastry have both been reserved and Connor continues to make progress on cage rest.
The kitten season has now arrived and we do have a lovely young mum, Marylou, together with her four kittens who were born in care. At this time of year we usually have a list of people who are waiting for kittens to arrive and, consequently, all four kittens are reserved and will be leaving shortly. Once Marylou has been neutered, blood tested, vaccinated and chipped she will be put up for adoption. She is a lovely friendly little cat and we do not think it will be long before she has a new home. The kittens will also be vaccinated and chipped before leaving and we will pay for them to be neutered at one of the vets we use when they are a little bigger.
Our cats and kittens are lucky as, when they leave for their new homes, we know they have received the very best treatment to ensure they are healthy and remain so. Unless adopted from a charity they are unlikely to have had more than flea and worm treatment. It is therefore important for people to know what to look for when buying a cat or kitten, especially if this is done online. Bright eyes, clean noses and ears are the first things to look for. If a kitten, a fat tummy does not necessarily indicate good health, as it probably has worms and also make sure that its bottom is clean. Check its coat, (which should be nice and shiny), for little black specks, as these will indicate the cat may have fleas. See how it interacts with you and, if timid, appreciate it may take more time to settle and be prepared to allow for this. Don’t just look at the colour of a cat’s coat but take into consideration its character. Be aware that some people charge ridiculous amounts for kittens with certain coloured coats.
You may be looking for a pedigree cat; if so, please read up about the different breeds to ensure the one you choose fits your lifestyle.

Obviously, a pedigree cat costs a lot of money so make sure you go to a reputable breeder who will register the cat with the GCCF (Governing Council of the Cat Fancy), either as a ‘pet’ or ‘breeding cat’. They will give you papers detailing the cat’s family history. Be aware that, for instance, ‘Rag Doll’ crossed with ‘Maine Coone’ is not a pedigree cat but just a moggy.
Finally check the conditions the cats/kittens have been living in. We do hear some very sad tales from people who contact us for help with the cost of neutering the cats and kittens they have bought.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.
Hedgehog Haven
In the last few weeks there have been more releases. There has also been three new arrivals.
Nugget was found out during the day and I have discovered that the reason for this is that she is blind.
Derek was heard screaming as he had fallen into an uncovered drain hole. Luckily he is recovering well and will soon be released. Please make sure drain holes are covered - once a hedgehog falls in they cannot get out and can suffer a nasty death by starvation.
Pictured is Humphrey. He was found by the side of the road. He had been hit by a vehicle. I will be taking him to the vets tomorrow to make sure his jaw is not broken as his mouth is sore and he has lost some teeth. He also has a sore nose so is finding breathing difficult. He has managed to eat and drink a small amount and I am supplementing that by syringe feeding watered down meat loaf dog food. I have also put him on a course of antibiotics and given pain relief.
So please when driving especially at dusk look out for hedgehogs wandering seeking food. Thank you

Applications open for Community Transport Fund
North Norfolk District Council to host workshop for organisations interested inapplying for grants
North Norfolk District Council has announced that its Community Transport Fund is open for applications.
The scheme is designed to support community transport schemes across the district that help vulnerable, disadvantaged and isolated residents of all ages access the services and facilities they need.
The types of project the fund is likely to support include Good Neighbours, Dial-a-Ride, MediRide, and work and study schemes. Any voluntary organisation that currently provides or wishes to set up a community transport service in North Norfolk is encouraged to apply to the council for a grant.
Cllr John Lee, Leader of the Council and of the Conservative Group,
Holt and District Probus Club
Inside every prison, immigration removal centre and some short term holding facilities at airports, there is an Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) – a group of ordinary unpaid volunteer members of the public doing an extraordinary job. This was explained to Holt Probus members at their May meeting, by Nick Turner, who for seven years served on the Independent Monitoring Board at Her Majesty’s Prison Norwich, and previously was on the IMB at Glen Parva Young Offenders’ Institution in Leicester.
The role of IMB members is to monitor the day-to-day life in their local prison or removal centre and ensure that proper standards of care Speaker Nick Turner and decency are maintained. Full access to all prisoners and to all parts of the prison are open to the monitors, and in particular, prisoners can be seen without the presence of prison staff.
Nick asked Probus members if they thought prison is an easy option the response was mixed, but Nick spoke about the life a prisoner leads, and left little room for doubt. It is not an easy option at all!
Nick ended his talk by telling that in one wall of his office was a bricked up doorway, which used to connect to the execution chamber, and went on to explain how hangings were carried out. A gruesome procedure carried out with meticulous attention to detail.
Meetings of Holt and District Probus Club are normally held at lunchtime on the 1st Thursday each month at the Feathers in Holt. Enquiries about membership (or about a trial visit - visitors are most welcome) should be made to Secretary Alan Holmes on 01263 710782.
said “At a time when many authorities are cutting back on community projects, I’m absolutely delighted that because of the sound monetary policies of this council, we are able to provide these funds to assist some of our most vulnerable residents.”
Cllr Sarah Butikofer, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group, said “I am delighted to see the rollout of this Community Transport Fund. There was concern about cuts being planned to vital services due to new legislation – cuts that could have left some of our most vulnerable residents even more isolated. We hope this funding will help to ensure the continuation of these excellent and important services.”
Cllr Nick Coppack, Leader of the Independent Group, said “I believe this is vital for the people of North Norfolk. Many who may not drive need the support of this kind of funding from the likes of Good Neighbour to MediRide to give them reassurance that they can make medical appointments, and it means that they don’t have to worry about carrying heavy loads of shopping. I wholeheartedly support this scheme.” A workshop for organisations interested in applying for a grant will be held at 10am on Thursday 7 June at the council’s HQ in Holt Road, Cromer. The workshop will outline the application process and – after any grant is awarded – what is required in terms of monitoring, data collection, publicity and promotion.
Applications to the Community Transport Fund can be submitted at any time, and decisions on applications will be made in March, July and November. To be considered this July, applications need to be submitted by June 29.
For more information or to apply for a grant, visit www.north-norfolk.gov.uk and search for “community transport fund”. To discuss a potential application or to book a place on the workshop, call the Communities Team on 01263 516173 or 01263 516248.

Dementia Action Week 2018 - Taking action for a dementia friendly Norfolk
Monday 21st May 2018 marks the start of Dementia Action Week in the UK. An initiative set up by the Alzheimer’s Society which aims to encourage people to take action to improve the lives of those affected by dementia.
As a firm, we have made a number of pledges to play our part in making Norfolk a more welcoming and helpful place for people living with dementia. We are a member of the Norwich City Dementia Action Alliance and hold regular dementia awareness sessions and training workshops to help raise awareness, understand what it's like to live with dementia and to help create a dementia friendly community. All of our lawyers are 'dementia friends' and we are proud to be a dementia friendly business.
One of the common questions we regularly face as Solicitors is what can an individual, who has been diagnosed with dementia, do in terms getting their legal affairs in order. The answer to this is simple, if you or someone you care about has been diagnosed with dementia, it is important to consider whether two documents are in place and up-to-date – a Will and a Lasting Power of Attorney.
What is a Will? A Will is a legal document that sets forth your wishes regarding the distribution of your Estate. It allows you to decide what happens to your property and possessions upon death and choose who they are bequeathed to.
What is a Lasting Power of Attorney ("LPA")? Having a Lasting Power of Attorney in place is just as important as having a Will. There are two different types of Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA). One relates to 'Property and Financial Affairs' and the other relates to 'Health and Welfare'. Both Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs)

appoint trusted people (attorneys) to act on a person's behalf should they lose the mental capacity to make decisions for themselves regarding financial matters or general welfare. It therefore helps to give you the reassurance of knowing your wishes will be respected if you ever become unable to make decisions for yourself.
I have a diagnosis of Dementia - can I still make these documents? There is a common misconception that a diagnosis of dementia prevents you from making or amending these documents, however, this is not the case. The legal test for capacity to make a new Will or Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) is decision specific and applied on a case by case basis. This means that whether an individual has capacity to make a new Will or Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) will be very much dependant on their personal circumstances at the time of giving the instructions.
When we meet to take the initial instructions, the solicitor can assess whether the person has sufficient capacity to make a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) or Will. If the solicitor has any concerns about a person's capacity they can ask the person's GP to assist. Therefore, just because you are living with dementia it does not necessarily mean you are unable to make these documents. However, it is important to bear in mind that time is of the essence and it is sensible to ensure you seek legal advice as early as possible, while you are still in a position to pass the legal test for capacity.
Commentary by Joseph Keeping, Solicitor in Wills, Trusts and Probate team covering North Walsham and Sheringham offices.
To find out more or discuss your individual requirements in further detail, our dedicated Lasting Power of Attorney solicitors are on hand to help, contact the North Norfolk team today, call North Walsham, 01692 660230 or Sheringham 01263 823398.
Please note from Monday 21st May our new North Walsham office address is 46-47 Market Place, North Walsham, NR28 9BT our telephone number will remain the same.

Beautiful friesian horse Maya celebrates 14th birthday with special party
Beautiful rescued Friesian mare Maya celebrated her 14th birthday earlier this month with a special party at the charity’s Aylsham Visitor Centre.
Maya was rescued in 2010 with six other horses who had been found in terrible conditions on a site in Essex. Going without food and care for so long left Maya very weak, anaemic and worm-ridden, and her muscles were wasting away. One of her friends had even sadly passed away from neglect.

Despite fears she would not survive, Maya made a full recovery thanks to months of intensive veterinary care. Her former owner was also found guilty of causing suffering. Now free to live a happy and healthy life at Redwings, her dazzling looks and friendly nature soon made Maya a favourite with visitors and she became a member of Redwings’ popular Adoption Scheme in 2014.
✔ Non slip finish available ✔ 100% waterproof and weathertight
Supporters can sponsor Maya for just ÂŁ15 a year, with funds going towards the 1,500 horses, ponies, donkeys and mules in Redwings’ care nationwide. Anyone who adopts one of Redwings’ 23 “Adoption Starsâ€? can visit their four-legged friend for free, as well as receive updates on their life at the Sanctuary and an invitation to their birthday party.
On Maya’s big day, visitors will had chance to enjoy cuddles with the birthday girl, join in party games and a quiz trail, and then watched her tuck into her very own birthday cake!
Alison Lanchester, Redwings’ Head of Fundraising said: “Maya overcame cruelty and neglect to become the beautiful horse we see today. She’s a friendly girl who loves a cuddle, so we hope as many people as possible will be there to celebrate with her on the day.
And if partying with one beautiful horse isn’t enough, Redwings Aylsham’s other Adoption Star residents will also be celebrating their birthdays with parties this summer, including donkey duo Wiggins and Wacko on Sunday 10 June, appaloosa pony Cookie on Sunday 24 June, cheeky Shetland ponies The Gangsters on Sunday 22 July, and handsome horse Gulliver on Sunday 26 August.
Meanwhile, Redwings’ second Norfolk visitor centre - Redwings Caldecott near Great Yarmouth – is also gearing-up to celebrate its Adoption Stars’ birthdays too, including beautiful mare Victoria on Sunday 27 May, cuddly Shetland pony Sampson on Sunday 1 July, friendly pony Cauli on Sunday 29 July, handsome Shire cross Fox on Sunday 5 August, delightful donkey Denise on Sunday 2 September and little donkey Esther on Sunday 28 October.

My Garden in Spring
The Prunus tree is very bright, A glorious picture of pink and white, Dwarf tulips and forget-me-nots mingle together, They don’t seem to mind the inclement weather. The camellia bush has become quite tall, Its creamy-white flowers grow along the brick wall. The birds take a dip in the little round pond, Then spread out their wings and sing a sweet song. It’s lovely to see the garden in spring, And the pleasure and joy this season brings.

The Swallowtail Butterfly
The butterfly was flying on a summer breeze Across Hickling broad to his home in the reeds The water looked clear and inviting to him That he swooped down low, dipping his wings. Oh dear he thought this is a mistake The water’s so deep not I’m caught in the lake. He thought of his mother and sisters three I’ll never get home in time for tea. Then along came some people out for a ride And a kind hand was lowered to lift him inside. A man cupped his hands and the warmth he could feel Made his wings start to flutter, can this be real? With the boat on the jetty moored safe and tight fast People anxiously watched as he lay on the grass, Many eyes looked to see if he could still breathe Thanks goodness he’s safe now it’s such a relief. As soon as he’s rested his wings he will fly Back to his reed home under the sky

You’d think at my age, I could do it, Overcome this irrational fear. But try as I might, I cannot do this, Even with all the right gear.
What’s missing from my general makeup? Why am I such a cowardly fool? Even young children can do it! Yet, I cannot dive into a pool!
