Civilian War Memorial

Sheringham Town Council are proud to have recently erected in Sheringham Cemetery a memorial to the civilians that lost their lives in Sheringham during World War II.

The memorial was first suggested to the Council by local resident Mr Brian Farrow who lost members of his family in an air raid during 1942. Reverend Christian Heycocks will dedicate the memorial and Mr Farrow will officially unveil it at a ceremony taking place on Saturday 22 September (time to be confirmed).

Everybody is welcome to attend especially family members of those dedicated on the memorial.

Dear Margaret,

I would like to update you on the happenings regarding Sheringham Promenade over the last weeks. Firstly may I say that prior to the comments on Facebook, I had been made aware by a resident of their concerns and had taken the time with officers and the person concerned to look at those issues - that in my view is the sensible way to go about it rather that telling the world in the first place. Reviewing the promenade as we did on 1 May I did note merit in many of the points raised, so much so I add here a list of issues being addressed by the officers of NNDC : East End prom • That green lighting quotes are awaited for damaged turbines and programme units • Better signage for dog fouling and cycling on the prom being looked at • Benches outside the museum about to be painted • Former ice cream kiosk should be up and running for this summer • Tank, Anglia Water owned, now under the ‘Deep History Coast Initiative will hopefully be painted before this summer and with a mural of a mammoth at a later stage • Hole in retaining wall by Funky Mackerel will be repaired and skimmed over • Sign post at bottom of Beach Road to be renewed and sort signs • The two large recycling bins, one east, one west, will be renewed by early June (being made at present) • Hole by Ellie’s to be repaired • Old beach inspector’s hut being looked at by NNDC estates - I have requested old boards on this hut be taken down and hut painted (looks a mess now) • Handrails up to The Leas joint repairs to be done and finish painting • Steps to west chalets yellow paint to be renewed • Shower post and unit, painting work already being done • Dwarf wall fitted with new plank seats from old wood off Beach Road fishermen’s ramp • Lighting contractor investigating and repairing faults with west end lighting. These tasks will be taken up and dealt with. As a point of interest? Considerable work was done to the pond on The Leas, electrical and pump works. The Leas toilets had emergency lighting remedial work and a 5 year inspection done this winter. The yacht pond underwent considerable work in 2017, and is cleaned and emptied every year. Of course the work completed by NNDC since 2014 on the promenade from The Upcher Breakwater to the Lifeboat shed was finished costing £3m - interestingly with the surges we experienced this winter it is recognised that possibly that area would have failed had this work not been done and costing a great deal more. There have been issues that needed to be raised I recognise but there is also ongoing work which we all take for granted. I wish to thank the person who sensibly raised the issue first with me which has resulted in focus not only being made by District but also Sheringham Town Council, who will now inspect the prom over the next few weeks to see what has been done. Brian Hannah, District Councillor Sheringham North

More Attractions confirmed for Cromer Hospital Summer Fete

Cromer Hospital is delighted to announce more attractions for its annual summer fete on Saturday 30 June.

The fete, which is being held on the main Cromer Hospital site, will be officially opened by ‘Normal for Norfolk’ star, Desmond McCarthy at 10am, with the fete running all day until 3pm.

Back by popular demand, international clown duo ‘Razz and Auntie Pearl’ will be performing two shows at 11am and 1.30pm.

Razz said “We are very pleased to be attending the Cromer Hospital fete again this year, and we would like to dedicate our shows in memory of Mary Northway, a great lady for helping the hospital. We look forward to seeing everyone there!

In between each of Razz and Pearl’s performances, Invidia Voices will be showcasing their talent with a performance at 12noon.

The East Anglian Star Wars Club, which is made up of Star Wars enthusiasts who have each created their own Star Wars costumes to be as accurate as possible, are also preparing for a visit to the fete, where Darth Vader will be joined by Stormtroopers.

Other key attractions at the fete include performances by Dance Attitude at

10.30am, an appearance by a Bumble Bee Transformer, traditional fete games, henna tattoos, First Responders, a BBQ, a car boot, craft stalls and much more entertainment still to be confirmed.

Money raised from the event will go towards the Cromer Hospital fund, part of the N&N Hospital Charity and Cromer Community and Hospital Friends. Anita Martins, Matron at Cromer Hospital said “We’re delighted to be announcing more attractions to our fete line-up! There really will be something for everyone to enjoy so we hope many people will save the date.

You can still book a car boot space at the fete for ÂŁ5. If interested, please call Alex Hannah at Cromer Hospital on 01603 646266.

Alert sounded over council tax valuation calls

Residents warned not to hand over their personal details to cold-callers Householders in North Norfolk are being reminded not to give financial or other personal details to cold-callers.

It follows reports that an impersonator of someone at the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) in Brighton has been making telephone calls, promising to look into council-tax banding but asking for people’s bank details at the same time.

The VOA – part of HM Revenue & Customs – values properties for council tax and for nondomestic rates in England and Wales. It does not make unsolicited contact with households to ask for bank details.

People should never hand over any financial details to callers claiming to be from reputable organisations, whether that be a government agency, a council, a utilities company or a bank.

WHY CHOOSE SILVER SIL VER & W ARD WARD SOLICITORS SOLICIT ORS in 201 ? 201 ?

“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difficult difficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offers offers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT APPOINTMENT,, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. offer fer the same I advise new clients to “shop around as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can of expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norfolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.

“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 201 to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.

Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 01263 823465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk

Kelling Probus Club

Kelling Probus Club met at the Dales Hotel Upper Sheringham on 17 May. After an excellent lunch we enjoyed a most informative talk given by Stephen Hume.

Stephen spoke about artificial intelligence (AI). He prefaced his remarks with discussion of the AI effect, whereby every advance and success in AI redefines it further into the future. The super intelligent human-equivalent machine seen by many as the goal of artificial intelligence research remains many decades away, and possibly a lot longer. We know it takes a super-intelligent human to become world champion at chess or the ancient oriental game of Go and we assumed the same range of skills would be needed by a computer capable of beating them. Instead each has been defeated by a narrowly focused single function computer built to perform that one task and nothing else. Thus, tasks we think of as requiring high intelligence are being performed by narrow or weak AI systems and if we continue to think of AI as the super-intelligent artificial human machine, we miss the real advances being made all around us by increasingly powerful narrow/weak AI systems. Within the confines of the single task they are designed for, AI systems can sense and respond to their environment, think, learn and take actions as a result. The enormous power of hand held mobile telephones and their applications, for example in recognition and search engine technologies, would have been unthinkable a few decades ago.

Stephen explained how algorithms designed to facilitate machine learning can be incorporated

into multi-layered neural networks that can, for example categorise and classify information in a manner analogous to the human brain, such that pattern recognition is possible. This enables insights to be extracted from masses of complex data, trends identified, examples learned from and all at speeds far beyond that which the human brain could work. This capacity (deep learning) is the current cutting edge of the advance. Voice recognition is now sophisticated enough to recognise moods or even illness, and natural language and translation technologies are being developed such that telephone conversations with computer systems are already replacing call centres.

Current applications also include the use of computer programmes to aid diagnosis, particularly from clinical medical investigations such as three dimensional imaging (scans) in a more thorough and unbiased analysis than even the best trained specialist might achieve. Instant access to, and evaluation of, current knowledge within the specific discipline, may also allow computers to suggest effective treatment protocols. It is also probable that increasing use of devices similar to Fit Bit monitors will allow for more exacting and predictive management of health issues particularly in the elderly. There is similar massive investment in AI in finance, retail, manufacturing, defence, agriculture and other sectors.

The potential for effective deep learning is limited by the quality and accuracy of the data available. It is staggering to learn just how rapidly the

North Norfolk Labour Party

is pleased to invite you to a questions and answers session with the British Member of the European Parliament for the East of England region, for the Labour Party Alex Mayer (MEP) on Thursday 21 June at 7.30pm at Cromer Community Centre, Garden Street, NR27 9HL (wheelchair accessible).

amount of digital data is expanding. 90% of the world’s digital data has been created in the last two years; in 2020 it will be 50 times larger than it was in 2010.

Stephen concluded by observing that it would be naive to assume or even hope that everyone developing and implementing AI has our best interests at heart. He considered that we should add AI to the list of concerns so important to our survival (pollution, climate change, diminishing resources etc.) and that appropriate responses are required. We need to develop an education system such that children are prepared for a world of rapid change and fewer jobs. We need to develop effective controls to oversee the ethical, moral and legal implications of what AI will make possible. We need to limit the extent to which the ‘tech giants’ (Google, Apple, Amazon, Facebook and Microsoft) can use their domination of AI to put their profits ahead of our interests.

North Norfolk District Council hosts national Blue Flag awards ceremony and Norfolk coast.” celebrates winning six Blue Flags for the district The annual awards ceremony which sees Keep Britain Tidy hand out Blue Flags and Seaside Awards to local authorities was held in Cromer last month.

Environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy presented 190 awards to England’s very best beaches, including 65 international Blue Flags and 125 Seaside Awards (eight more than last year), with 42 beaches achieving both awards.

Blue Flag winning authorities from Poole to Waveney and Torbay to Hastings were present at the ceremony on Cromer Pier. Organisations including Anglian Water, the RNLI Lifeguards, the Environment Agency, the Marine Conservation Society and parish councils from the Blue Flag towns and villages in North Norfolk also attended.

The suggestion that Cromer could host the event was made during last year’s Blue Flag ceremony, which was held in Bournemouth.

In 2017, North Norfolk District Council had its most successful set of Blue Flag results when the

district secured six flags – at East Runton, West Runton, Cromer, Mundesley, Sea Palling and Sheringham.

NNDC has repeated its success this year with East Runton, West Runton, Cromer, Mundesley, Sea Palling and Sheringham all named in this year’s Blue Flag list.

The awards recognise the top tier of English beaches and are given out only to those sites that have the highest quality of water, facilities, environmental education and management, with superb levels of cleanliness and safety.

Cllr John Lee, Leader of North Norfolk District Council and the Conservative Group, said “We are really proud to have retained our six blue flags in North Norfolk. It is recognition of all the hard work put in by various agencies and voluntary groups.

“Furthermore we are delighted we've been chosen to host this national event and welcomed our fellow coastal authorities to the beautiful North

Cllr Sarah Butikofer, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group at North Norfolk District Council, said “I’m delighted my own ward, The Runtons, has again been awarded two Blue Flags. Well done to all involved in North Norfolk and beyond.”

Keep Britain Tidy’s Chief Executive Allison Ogden-Newton said “The success of the 148 beaches in reaching the very high standards demanded by both awards is testament to all those who have worked so hard to protect and improve our beaches – from beach managers and volunteers to local people and businesses.

“When you enjoy a trip to a beach flying an international Blue Flag or Seaside Award, you know you are on one of the safest, cleanest and very best in the country.”

As well as the six Blue Flags, the beach at Wells, which is owned by the Holkham Estate but jointly managed by NNDC and the RNLI, won a Seaside Award.

RNLI Welly moves along Norfolk Coast

May is the traditional month for the ‘Welly’ fundraising by the RNLI.

Yellow badges are sold in all shops and outlets connected to the RNLI.

Cromer RNLI had the great pleasure of being given the ‘Welly’ before venturing out to hand it over to Sheringham RNLI.

Richard Leeds, Lifeboat Operations Manager said, ‘Bringing to the public’s attention the ‘Welly’ campaign is only part of our work. Raising such vital funds allows the RNLI to continue its work helping those in trouble at sea’.

Sheringham Lifeboat ‘The Oddfellows’ B 818 Service Launch

At 11.30am on Thursday 25 May the Sheringham Lifeboat was tasked by Humber Coastguard to undertake a search for a dog seen to be entering the sea just east of the Two Lifeboats Hotel at Sheringham seafront at about the time of low a water and not seen to return.

Visibility was reduced to about 30m in places and the Lifeboat undertook several search patterns as well as a shoreline search but nothing was found.

The Lifeboat returned to station and was rehoused and ready for service at 1pm.

MIXED TRACTION GALA

If you have been looking forward to this year's annual Diesel Gala you may have become aware that we have been a little slower than usual with updates on locomotive confirmations and attractions. There have been a number of difficulties regarding the availability of both visiting locomotives and our home fleet - the Class 03, 31 and 37 locomotives are still undergoing major overhauls.

Therefore we have made the decision for this year to operate a Mixed Traction Gala to ensure we can still provide an interesting and varied event.

12131, which will be available for hauling at selected times throughout the weekend within station limits.

New for this year we are throwing open the doors for guided tours around the Weybourne works. During the tour you will get a chance to see our machine shop, carriage and wagon department, the loco running shed and our ever growing boiler shop. Shed tours will be free entry for anyone with an event ticket and £5.00 for those without.

We are offering a special ticket deal this year, 2 days for the price of one which will be on sale from our online shop soon.

Join us for the Mixed Traction Gala on the North Norfolk Railway, between the 15th and 17th June. An intensive timetable will be in operation with lots to see and experience.

MIXED TRACTION GALA 15th - 17th JUNE 2018 Run in conjunction with The Weybourne Traction Group. This years event combines heritage steam and diesel traction with a variety of historic coaching stock. Diesel Class 08,11, 20, 37, 42

Our special guest for this is Class 42 Warship D832 'Onslaught', courtesy of the Bury Hydraulic Group. In addition, our friends at Direct Rail Services have very kindly agreed to provide a locomotive (identity not yet known) and long-term visitor Class 20 20227 newly named 'Sherlock Holmes' will be the third diesel loco. Supporting this will be the railway's Class 101 DMU in its hybrid blue/green liveries.

Home Fleet steam: 92203 & 76084. Passenger, Goods & Parcels.

And much more

Adding further interest is Class 08 D3935. After more than 6 years out of traffic for a major overhaul, the Gronk will be officially re-launched into service with a special daily round trip from Weybourne to Holt and back. Our shunting locomotives are usually kept within station limits but for this Gala we are excited to offer an outing on the running line. The inaugural journey on the Friday will be a special celebratory run, with a glass of Prosecco included for each lucky special ticket holder. Tickets for this exclusive service will be available from our online shop soon for a £5.00 supplement per person.

Making this a truly mixed traffic gala will be the appearance of 2 steam locos, 9F, 92203 'Black Prince' and Standard 4, 76084 both steam and diesel locos will be operating a mixture of passenger and non-passenger trains, including our new parcels services throughout the three day event. If one shunter wasn't enough, we give you a second! Class 11, Sheringham Independent 489

Quality Award for Beeston Parish Council

It has just been announced that Beeston Regis Parish Council have received the Quality Award from the National Association of Local Councils.

This award is only given to top performing councils, which ‘go above and beyond their legal obligations, leading their communities and continuously seeking opportunities to improve and develop even further.’

Judy Oliver, County Councillor for Sheringham and Beeston Regis said ‘I am absolutely delighted that Beeston Regis Parish Council have been recognised for the great work that they do. To receive the Quality Award – exceptionally for the second time – is a huge achievement and is, I believe, the only such award in North Norfolk.

A great deal of work goes into achieving this level of national recognition and I want to congratulate Mike Knowles the Chairman, Roy Beckley the Vice-Chairman, Peter Bullimore the Clerk, and all the other members of the Council who do such a fantastic job.

The members of Beeston Regis Parish Council, like the members of Town and Parish Councils across North Norfolk, give up a huge amount of time to help their communities, and they voluntarily use their knowledge and experience to try to make things better for everyone living in our wonderful District.’

Chairman Beeston Parish Council Mike Knowles

Councils only obtain the Quality Award by demonstrating good governance, effective community engagement and council improvement. The award is only given after a review by experienced peers through the work of an accreditation panel. Beeston Regis Parish Council can be justifiably proud that they have - again - met the very high standards required.

New Facility at Benjamin Court Opens

A new accommodation-based reablement facility in Cromer has opened.

confidently after a hospital stay.”

Benjamin Court will have capacity for 18 service users, with nine residents currently in place.

Benjamin Court is a facility designed to give hospital leavers an opportunity to build confidence to regain their independence. Norfolk County Council has invested £1.6m in the unit, which has been changed from a palliative care unit to a reablement centre.

The service began in February, but was formally opened last month by Cllr Shelagh Gurney, vice-chairman of the Adults Social Services Committee at Norfolk County Council.

She said “We understand how much people value their independence, and want to stay in their own homes for as long as possible and our new unit is certainly making that possible for more of our residents.

“Since it opened three months ago it has already helped nearly 50 people get back on their feet and return home safely and

The first user to come through the doors was 93-year-old John Worthington, a former Second World War commando who had been treated in hospital for double pneumonia. He spent around a fortnight at Benjamin Court, before returning home to his wife Yvonne, 97.

He said, upon returning to the facility for the official opening, “The staff here were very good, excellent …everything here was excellent. They look after you.”

Norfolk County Council aims to open more reablement centres in the near future, with a number of locations under consideration.

Meet the Artists and Exhibition Red Lobster Gallery on Station Road in Sheringham is hosting an Art Exhibition throughout June showcasing three local artists.

Exhibiting work will be Michael Sanders who uses mixed media techniques, on both canvas and paper, using a more impasto style together with texture over-painted with washes and translucent glazes help describe foreground detail and texture without becoming too illustrative. Michael's work depicts the stunning North Norfolk coast and its dramatic skies and landscapes.

Amy Christie produces vibrant artwork using mixed media, which is very colourful and uplifting. Amy’s compositions are born from observations of pattern, whether man-made or natural, such as a beautiful fabric, a grouping of

flowers or a ceramic vase with an interesting glaze. Flowers, her current focus, act as a wonderful vehicle for colour and she revels in the creative process of selecting, mixing and working into them to create a piece that sings.

Joanna Padfield creates linocuts inspired by the Norfolk countryside, with a love of nature and the natural environment her ideas come from her surroundings. Wildlife, the woods, fields, heath land, the sea and the salt marshes.

Gallery owner, Alison Parriss, is pleased to champion these local artists, who will be demonstrating their skills at the Red Lobster Gallery on 9 and 10 June between 11am and 3.30pm.

Men encouraged to talk about their mental health problems

A plea for men living with mental health issues to “talk and open your heart” was made at a new drop-in session held in North Norfolk Fakenham and North Walsham which combine craft activities with a chance to talk.

Norfolk Men’s Wellbeing project lead Gabriel Abotsie added “Men are three times as likely as women to commit suicide and less likely to seek

help because they feel they have to be providers and protectors and cannot be seen to be weak. Our campaign aims to encourage men to seek support.”

groups to singing and gardening sessions.

The appeal was delivered by Cedric Anselin, former Norwich City football player now a Mental Health Ambassador. He told the gathering at Cromer Parish Hall his poignant personal story of going from UEFA Cup player to club rejection, feeling unwanted, lonely and being on the brink of suicide through to his ongoing recovery. He added “Men all think they are Superman but we need to talk, open our hearts, surround ourselves with positive people we trust and learn how to handle the bad days.”

The event - held during Mental Health Awareness week - hosted 16 stalls, all offering help and hope. Among them were the Wellbeing Service and new Men’s Sheds at Cromer, Sheringham,

The afternoon was organised, with the support of volunteers by The Wellbeing Service, Local Associate Coordinator Emilie Ruddick who said: “I am really pleased with our new event and we were able to refer some visitors to people who can offer them help.”

Blakeney Rowing Club Wins Trophies at The Hanse Festival

It was a truly great morning of competition at King’s Lynn’s Hanse Festival. Bluejacket and Hoi Larntan were ably towed to the event by Club members and this was really appreciated. Blakeney crews and supporters gathered at around 8am behind the Corn Exchange, all looking resplendent in the blue club jackets. Early morning mist evaporated and warmth spread to create beautiful racing conditions. A muddy slipway was negotiated with some effort and soon competition was under way over the two-mile course. Currents were strong and there was some jockeying for position at the starting line as coxes sought the best water. At the half way point, there were difficult bridge arches which tested boating skills and coxes needed to

18

be on their mettle with swift, clear instructions – particularly as King’s Lynn and Blakeney skiffs were often neck and neck. Blakeney crews rowed with effort and style and maintained this throughout the morning despite a quick turnaround between some races. The humour and camaraderie on the pontoon made the morning pass swiftly. The list of trophies gained is impressive. Awards will go on display for the best-looking craft, women’s and men’s runners up, mixed crews’ runners up. We were also the overall points winner which called for both crews to go up on stage at the end. See some great pictures on the club website at crablakeney.wordpress.com. Thanks to our King’s Lynn hosts for staging such a

memorable event. We look forward to next year. Why not come along and try skiff rowing? No need to race. Social rowing is great too. You are entitled to three sample rows before deciding whether to join and no previous experience is necessary. Coaching is always on offer. If you are interested in experiencing rowing for fun, contact Tom on 01263 761570. You can also follow club activities on Facebook. Hope to see you soon. Barry Howes.

Popular Bagot goats arrive back in Cromer

Nannies and kids sure to prove a popular tourist draw as well as providing important habitat management.

North Norfolk District Council’s famous herd of Bagot goats has arrived back in Cromer as they prepare to spend another summer at the popular seaside resort.

The Bagot goats – which have spent the winter on duty elsewhere in Norfolk – have proved a hit with visitors over the past couple of years, as well as carrying out an important habitat-management role on Cromer’s cliff.

work at Salthouse Heath over the summer.

Cllr Hilary Cox, Portfolio Holder for the Environment at NNDC, said “The goats have proved to be very popular with visitors, and they have combined that with doing a superb job managing the habitat.

The Bagot herd pictured elsewhere in Norfolk

Nine nannies and ten kids arrived last month after putting in their most recent shift at Kelling Heath. Meanwhile, eight billies will continue their hard

residents and visitors alike.”

“We’re delighted to have them back, and we’re sure they will be welcomed by

In the past, the cliff area has become overgrown,

leading to a problem with litter embedded and snagged in bushes. The Bagot goats graze on rough materials rather than grass, and that helps keep plant growth across the area under control.

The Bagot is believed to be Britain’s oldest breed of goat and unlike most other breeds - that favour mountains and uplands - it developed in the English lowlands. Bagots are very hardy and easy to tame.

This herd first came to Cromer in 2016, when eight goats began the task of keeping the cliff habitat under control. Last year, a further eight were brought down from Cumbria and added to the herd, and the size of their enclosure was also doubled.

Since then, 10 billies were sold to Suffolk Wildlife Trust to make room for the purchase of a complete breeding herd from Somerset earlier this year.

Georgie Starkings of North Norfolk Speakers Club recently celebrated giving her first speech in public.

“I was thrilled to receive a certificate for my first speech - it was a huge milestone for me as I was terrified of speaking in front of an audience. With the guidance and support of Club members my confidence has really grown. There is so much to learn about public speaking and I’m looking forward to developing my speaking skills further”, said Georgie.

North Norfolk Speakers Club meets on alternate Wednesdays at 6.45pm at North Walsham High School on Spenser Avenue. For further information please visit www.nnsc.co.uk, email northnorfolkspeakersclub@gmail.com or contact Stuart 07775 793999

So who has liposuction or liposculpture?

Well, it is everyday people like me and you, not only rich and famous. The majority of our patients are normal people and not toned models sporting six pack chiselled torso that you might see in glossy brochures and magazines. We do see some of these lucky people who want to add a little more definition too!

Our oldest patient is a 76 year old lady who wanted to get rid of the stubborn and uncomfortable abdominal roll. We see middle aged woman who find it hard to shift belly fat after childbirth or that little overhang after caesarean section! We see young and middle aged men who are ex-forces but now find it difficult to stay in shape or shift man boobs. We see young and old with pockets of fat under their chin which is something they seem to have inherited and it seems to be at odds with the rest of their body.

It is not that you have not tried. You have been regularly using the gym and been careful about what you eat but you just can't shift that stubborn area of fat around the mid-section or saddle bags, legs, arms or back‌ you get the picture. This hard to shift fat can be in any location based on what you inherit.

What do you do next? Thanks to modern technology these concerns can be alleviated in a very short time. Liposuction means a major surgical procedure to most people. What is less well known is that it can be carried out in a safe, gentle and comfortable manner. If I told you that you can have liposuction while listening to music and then walk out of the procedure room-would you believe me? Yes, it is possible and has been for a while. Who is suitable for laser liposuction? Anyone with resistant pockets of fat. You have to be in good general health without significant medical problems and near your ideal body weight. Liposuction is not an alternative to diet and exercise and it is not a weight loss measure. It is purely to remove stubborn deposits of fat and a body sculpting or contouring treatment.

What areas are commonly treated? Mummy tummy, upper and lower abdomen, jowls and neck, double chins, love handles, muffin tops, hips, man boobs or moobs, upper arms, thighs, knees and most other body areas with localised collections of fat.

What happens during the procedure? You will have a medical consultation and treatment plan will be discussed. Fine needles will be used to administer a very dilute solution of local anaesthesia while you will be chatting with the team. A tiny 0.6 mm laser fibre will then be introduced into the treatment area. The laser will be activated to melt the fat and tighten the skin. The laser will not be used if you decide to recycle the fat to enhance other face or body areas such as breasts, buttocks or hands etc. This procedure involves fat injections to add volume. Small stainless steel tubes [micro cannula] will be used to suck out melted fat. Compression garments will then be applied and you will be able to go home. You will need someone to drive you home. What happens after the procedure? You will have dressings and tight compression garments for 24 hours. After this the dressings can be removed and gentle compression used for further 3-5 days. You are encouraged to go for a light walk and bed rest is not recommended. Most people return to normal activities within 2-5 days.

So, if you have wanted liposuction but worry about general anaesthesia, hospitalisation or lengthy recovery period or bruising, give us a call on 0800 0430737 or log on to the website www.coltishallclinic.co.uk for more information.

The Bank of Mum and Dad

Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr

‘The Bank of Mum and Dad' is the 9th biggest mortgage lender in the country. It is estimated to have lent £6.5 billion in 2017.

Parents who help children to buy their first home should be aware of all sorts of repercussions.

An outright gift with no-strings is the easiest, but the question of how one is to be fair to all your children needs careful handling. Your Will may need altering.

Another option is a loan; but is it really to be repaid, and, if so, on what terms? Is interest to be charged? Any commercial mortgage company also lending will insist on having priority to your loan.

Another possibility is that the parents take a share in the home, even if they are not registered as legal owners. Their interest can be evidenced by a deed called a Declaration of Trust.

The recently toughened-up Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) is now an important consideration, as an extra 3% higher rate is charged additionally on a second home, or an interest in it. To limit SDLT a gift or loan is better than an equity share.

Many parents are concerned about their child’s marriage or relationship and that the money given might be lost in a messy divorce/break-up. Retaining a loan/share of equity could protect the funds given or lent. A 2017 report showed that the reason why 1 in 3 parents were unwilling to

Your legal matters in safe hands Hayes + Storr Solicitors handle a whole range of personal and family legal matters with care and professionalism.

provide support to married children was due to concerns about the children’s spouse.

This worry can be protected against by the recipient-child entering into a pre-nuptial or cohabitation agreement. Such lack of trust in a family is difficult to bring up in conversation, so it may be easier for the solicitor to raise the safeguard of a pre-nuptial agreement (or be blamed for doing so) to maintain a happy family. A pre-nup could perhaps be a prerequisite of the gift. If the child is already married a post-nuptial agreement (post-nup) can achieve the same result.

If the loan is never intended to be repaid, this route can be good asset protection, but bad tax-planning. The advantage of a gift is that it sets the ‘7-year clock’ running for Inheritance Tax (“IHT”). For Capital Gains Tax the child will get full main residence relief if they own the whole property, whether funded by a gift or a loan. If the parent holds a share of the house, they will have to pay full CGT on their share if they later sell or give it.

Helping a child buy their first home remains a useful way of passing on family wealth. A trust can work well. You might consider a revocable interest. Trusts are not just used for tax mitigation and are a useful asset protection tool also.

A loan can be written off in stages to use up annual IHT gifting allowances. This release should be done by a deed. The loan could be

repaid over the years in lieu of paying mortgage-interest. This is a good way to teach financial discipline; rather than the child being given too much too young.

The important thing is to talk it through with a solicitor, as your trusted advisor, so that you can establish your priorities and they can help you structure the arrangements in the best way to suit you and your family.

Billiard Tournament

The 33rd annual Billiard Tournament sponsored by Wheelspeed of Fakenham took place on Sunday 27 May at Broadland Snooker Centre, Hellesdon in Norwich. Twenty four players from around Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and one entry from Kent took to the green baize to fight out some keenly contested matches, each playing five matches to earn the right to qualify for the semi-finals of either the main event or the plate competition. The main competition saw Mervyn Tuffield take on Mick White and Darrel Newman play Mark Hill. White progressed to the final with a comfortable 242 to 138 point victory, while Hill who had not lost a match in qualifying just got home by 14 points, 172 to 158.

The final saw Hill triumph comfortably with White never able to get his game going. The Plate competition saw highest handicapped player Nathan Mann take on veteran John Thompson who clung on to claim a 19 point victory 158 to 139. The other semi saw Kent player Dave Smith up against Aylsham youngster Harley Dyson, with the youngster comfortably winning 253 to 157.

The final brought together two Alby League players in Thompson and Dyson, and after a closely matched first half of the game, Dyson Mark Hill with Clive pulled away in the latter stages to further enhance his growing reputation as a youngster with tremendous potential within the three ball game by winning the Plate competition. Tournament organiser Aubrey Ampleford and Wheelspeed owner Clive Scott conducted the presentations and trophies were presented to the winners and runners up, with everyone expressing enjoyment with the day and the food that had been served.
