New Partnership for Sheringham Woodfields

A great partnership between Sheringham Woodfields School and St Martins Housing Trust has been created. Pupils and staff running the school’s charity shop, Woodfields Den, have chosen St Martins Housing Trust to receive surplus stock of bed linen, duvets and other material items.

Pupils and staff wanted to ensure said items didn’t just end up being recycled with other textiles. Pupils have been motivated to think of the needs of others which has helped them understand the work of St Martins Housing Trust.

Continued from front cover... St Martins Housing Trust helps homeless people, and those at risk, by offering them a hand up through housing, support and care. Steve Greensides, who collected the items on behalf of St Martins was overwhelmed by the volume of donations. He said “These items will now be sorted and prepared ready for winter when our stock levels are always hit hard. These donations will have a real difference this winter”. The single duvets and bed linen are put to use at the hostels and care homes run by St Martins, whose focus is on improving the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in Norfolk.

Going forward Woodfields Den will continue to collect and pass on bed linen to St Martins, as well as other items that have been highlighted as in short supply.

Sheringham Woodfields School is a complex needs school located in Sheringham. Woodfields Den is the school’s charity shop which has had a presence within the town centre for the past seven years. The shop is open Monday – Saturday with pupils supporting and running all aspects of a busy commercial enterprise. Any profits made from the shop are invested back into the school on projects chosen by the pupils. TRUNCH FUN DAY AND SCARECROWS

Trunch Village Society are staging this special event on 15 July between 10am and 4pm. Admission is ÂŁ3 per adults and children are free with all proceeds going to the Village Society who are then able to provide financial support to ensure the smooth running of local clubs, organisations and projects in the village. Many of the events will be held in ‘The Paddock’, a delightfully enclosed area in the centre of the village within a short stroll from the allocated free parking area.

Stalls will include jewellery, book sales, bric a brac, needlework, cider co-operative, woodwork, clocks and watches and plant sales. A marquee will house a summer flower show and another marquee will be displaying an art exhibition.

Children will find plenty of interest with a Punch and Judy show, coconut shy and face painting together with a number of other games.

In an effort to provide something for everyone there will also be a show of classic cars, bikes and tractors plus amateur radio communications demonstration, static model aircraft, model steam engines, a gun dog obedience display and the Mundesley Fire Engine with crew.

A visitors’ programme will include a map identifying the locations of the amazing scarecrows which will be on show as visitors meander around the village. Also there are opportunities to attend a Beekeeping Demonstration run by a Master Beekeeper and to take part in a children’s treasure trail. Ploughman’s lunches, tea, coffee and a variety of cakes will be available in the Village Hall, whilst the family friendly Social Club with licensed bar will be providing a barbecue along with live music.

Michael Tyler, who forms part of an organising committee for this Fun Day, says “We have tried to cater for everyone and invite visitors to enjoy a few leisurely hours in our picturesque village whilst supporting a worthy cause.

WHY CHOOSE SILVER & W ARD SILVER WARD SOLICITORS in 201 ? 201 ? SOLICITORS

“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difficult difficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offers offers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT APPOINTMENT,, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norfolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.

“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 201 to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.

Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 01263 823465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk

New book from Sheringham Naturalist - Moss Taylor

Sheringham naturalist and author, Moss Taylor, has just had his 8th book published, ‘Wings over Weybourne’ – an account of the history and birdlife of Weybourne Camp. When he first visited Weybourne Camp in 1972, little did he realise that it would become the centre of his birdwatching and bird ringing activities for the next 46 years, as it still does to this day.

Bespoke Weddings

The book opens with a chapter by the owner of the Muckleburgh Collection, Sir Michael Savory, in which he gives a fascinating account of the history of the defences employed in the Weybourne area from Roman times up to the end of the Second World War. The main part of the book describes the amazing variety of birds that the author and other observers have recorded on the camp and the adjoining Muckleburgh Hill.

photo: christaylorphoto.co.uk To date 289 species have been recorded in the area, the vast majority since 1972. In addition almost 24,000 birds of 118 species have been ringed on the camp, and these have resulted in a large number of recoveries both within the British Isles and abroad, the most interesting of which are tabulated and their significance explained.

The book runs to 146 pages and includes 39 colour photos of many of the less common birds. It retails at £15 and all profits from the book will go to Love for Leo, a charity set up by the author and his partner, Robina Churchyard, which helps to finance equipment and treatment that is not available under the National Health Service, for Norfolk and Suffolk children with cerebral palsy.

Big Society Fund hands out another £51,000 North Norfolk District Council scheme continues to support community groups and charities

A gym, a brass band and the Benjamin Foundation are among the groups and projects to be given a boost with funding from North Norfolk District Council’s Big Society Fund (BSF).

The BSF has made the following six awards in its latest round of funding: • Benjamin Foundation (£10,000) – contribution towards the cost of materials, equipment and personal protective clothing needed for Ben’s Workforce Handyman Service and the training courses for young people to develop the skills required to be used within the service • Fakenham Town Band (£7,327.14) – to purchase two Besson cornets, a tenor horn, a baritone horn and a set of cymbals • Friends of Langham Dome (£5,000) – contribution towards works to enable a replica Spitfire to be installed and displayed outside Langham Dome • Lighthouse Charity Trust, Sheringham (£15,000) – contribution to refurbishment and equipment for the Men's Shed project • Stalham Community Gym (£4,170.76) – to purchase additional gym equipment for new classes • Wood Norton Village Hall (£9,792) – to purchase play equipment, including a swing set and a spinning-top roundabout The six grants combined are worth £51,289.90.

The Lighthouse Charity Trust has bought the former St John Ambulance Hall in Wyndham Street, Sheringham, to turn it into a Men’s Shed in a bid to combat isolation and loneliness amongst men. The BSF grant will go towards its refurbishment and equipment.

“We are delighted that the council shares our concern to tackle loneliness and isolation, which is especially acute in rural areas,” said the charity’s Peter Farley. “It is a tremendously encouraging boost to our determination to do all we can to eliminate the suffering such deprivation causes.”

Cllr John Lee, Leader of North Norfolk District Council and Leader of the Conservative Group at NNDC, said “Being Chairman of the Big Society Fund panel is by far the best part of my job. To be able to support our communities with these grants is an absolute pleasure.

“I’d encourage any groups across the district to get in touch to see if we can support them. Being able to provide funding directly into our local parishes to help improve people’s lives in even the smallest way is extremely pleasing.”

For more information about the application process, visit www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/tasks/big-societyfund/big-society-fund-details or contact the BSF team on 01263 516173 or 01263 516248.

Thar be Pirates coming to North Lodge Park in Cromer! Y'AARGH!

Boxtree Productions are returning to the beautiful North Lodge Park on the 5th August this year. They will be performing their brand new family musical adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's benchmark pirate story 'Treasure Island'. What better way to while away a sunny summer's afternoon than watching a swashbuckling tale of pirates and hidden treasure told in the energetic Boxtree Productions style?

When Jim Hawkins discovers a treasure map amongst the possessions of the late 'Captain' Billy Bones, it hurtles him in to a cat and mouse game with dangerous pirates, taking him across the World to 'Treasure Island'.

Will Jim find the treasure? Will he make it back to England? And should he trust the mysterious ship's cook, Long John Silver?

With inventive staging, original songs and magical storytelling we invite audiences to enjoy this classic tale of adventure, treasure and, of course, rum, in Boxtree Production's unique and energetic way!

James Franklin, managing director of Boxtree Productions said “We are so excited to be coming back to North Lodge Park this summer. It's a lovely garden and it will be good to be telling this classic tale of pirates and the ocean with the salt of the Cromer sea in the air! Last year we had a super afternoon when Boxtree Productions brought their production of Wind in the Willows to Cromer, so we really wanted them back this year” said Barry Meadows who is organising the event on behalf of the Friends of North Lodge Park. “The Park is so suited to outdoor theatre, and Boxtree have proven they bring the Park to life with their style of theatre.”

The audience can arrive from an hour before the performance begins and are encouraged to bring a picnic, a blanket or low-backed chair and even a glass of wine or two and soak up the atmosphere of this incredible show in the gardens of North Lodge Park.

Tickets are on sale via northlodgepark.org.uk and at Merchants' Place in Cromer. They are extremely limited so early booking is strongly advised. Advance tickets are £5, or £15 for a family of 4. The show will start at 2pm and will be approximately 2 hours long including an interval.

Kelling Probus Club held its June Meeting at The Dales Hotel when 28 members and guests enjoyed a tasty lunch and fellowship before chairman Mike Clayton welcomed Tony Bosduniak, our guest speaker who spoke on 'Farming Post Brexit'.

Tony who was the former editor of 'Farm Brief' talked about his early days in journalism, before becoming an agricultural journalist. His job soon entailed travel and of course he also met ministers and politicians who were involved in agriculture in government. He had some lovely stories to tell of these encounters.

At the present time the various branches of farming have diverse views on what should happen post Brexit. He outlined what the options for subsidies were and stated that he felt that no government would ever produce the value being received today. He talked about subsidies and insurance schemes in many countries and how it worked.

Tony then outlined some of the problems our farmers had with supplying the big supermarket groups and as they take 30% of the national produce, there is an awkward relationship between supplier and retailer. He covered the facts that agricultural land was £10,000 an acre today and the problems this also caused.

The agricultural industry has learned to diversify and realise income from other uses of assets - he named use of barns as warehouses, cottages as rentals, wind farms and recreational use. He stated that most were breaking even despite the low value of the pound affecting imports of fertilizers and chemicals.

Bruce Bedwell thanked him for his talk and Tony was applauded by members.

July

The months have slipped by, it is now July. Two larks are soaring high in the sky, blue cornflowers are growing beside the stream, I could sit here all day and happily dream. A blue butterfly hovers and alights on my arm, in a moment she'll move, so I have to keep calm. I pick up my book, a grass snake slithers by, it's time to leave, and I give a sad sigh. Holt Festival announces new Artistic Director

Anwen Hurt to take the helm of North Norfolk’s leading arts festival

North Norfolk’s award-winning Holt Festival has announced that Anwen, Lady Hurt is to be their new permanent Artistic Director from 2019 onwards.

Anwen has been involved in the Holt Festival, in various guises, since it was founded in 2009 under the chairmanship of Rhu Bruce Lockheart. She will take the reigns for the 2019 festival and beyond, following in the footsteps of Stash Kirkbride who took the helm as guest Artistic Director for the current 10th anniversary year and previous directors, Charles Pugh, Delaval Astley and Tony Britten.

‘I am delighted to be appointed Artistic Director of the Holt Festival.’ Anwen commented ‘I have been involved with the Holt Festival in different guises since its

inception and have watched it grow over the last ten years under the guidance of Rhu and Tony, Delaval, Charles and Stash. Big shoes to fill! I look forward to continuing their work and helping the festival to expand and develop.’

established as one of the East of England’s most anticipated annual events. During festival week the charming North Norfolk Georgian country town becomes a magnet for tourists, arts lovers and international performers.

Adney Payne, Chair of the Festival Board said ‘Everyone at Holt Festival is delighted that Anwen Hurt has agreed to be our Artistic Director from 2019. She has been involved in the Festival for many years and we are very lucky that someone of her calibre will be programming the Festival. ‘

For its 2018 10th anniversary year guest Artistic Director Stash Kirkbride has curated a programme that encompasses big names like Jasper Carrott and Leo Sayer; local legends The Nimmo Twins with a special Norfolk Day event, and political and journalistic heavyweights Lord Ashdown, Ann Widdecombe and John Simpson. The music programme ranges from Italian classical pianist Gloria Campagner to the Zimbabwean sounds of Anna Mudeka, as well as rock and jazz. The Festival, which runs from 21-29 July also boasts world exclusive exhibitions, children’s events, drama, film, comedy and more. For full details and tickets visit www.holtfestival.org

Anwen was married to the actor Sir John Hurt until his death in 2017 and has lived in Norfolk for the past ten years.

The award-winning Holt Festival has become

the festival which takes place 21 - 29 July.

“We hope that this will help to bring together the wider community in a common celebration, and to draw visitors and locals alike around the town”.

Groups of older children have also made larger owls, to be displayed at St Andrew’s Church, Holt Library and elsewhere in town during Holt Festival Week.

This year it is 10 years since the Holt Festival was first launched and as a way of

celebrating this anniversary, every child at Holt Primary School has created a (second) owl trail, spreading throughout the town.

Under the guidance of local artist and workshop leader Jessica Perry, each child at the Primary School has made a small characterful, perching or standing owl, using recycled materials.

These will be displayed in all the shop or premises windows in Holt during

Sharing your home with an older parent Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr

This is a companion to last month’s article on the topic of ‘The Bank of Mum and Dad', which dealt with parents helping their young adult children put their first foot on the housing ladder. Here, I consider arrangements where children help and support their parents with housing in later life.

This can be provided by combining one home into two or by a ‘granny annexe’ arrangement; usually, but not always, done with the best of motives. It may involve an element of a gift but, with that comes risks and sacrifices. The solicitor has a major role to play in putting in place a plan and/or giving independent advice.

Possible arrangements are:

• Buying something together, possibly a house with a granny annexe;

• Buying two homes close together, with each household still being independent;

Your legal matters in safe hands Hayes + Storr Solicitors handle a whole range of legal matters with care and professionalism.

• Adapting/extending one of their homes;

• Squeezing the parent into the current home; this is usually the least good option.

Important points to consider are:

• Differing interests and potential conflicts; especially between the in-laws. Ideally, all arrangements should be as open within the family as possible, even if it is not what all the family would have chosen. Here, clear legal advice is critical and all the possible future problems need thinking through in advance. ‘Stress tests’ are best applied at this point, rather than in a crisis.

• If there is a gift element, is it in return for the provision of care? Would this include buying in specialist nursing care?

• If there is to be joint ownership, who is to own what? If building work is done, the cost of it is not usually reflected in an increase in property value. What if the child needs to raise a mortgage to provide their contribution?

• What if it all goes wrong? Who are you to turn to for advice/support? What about loss of mental capacity? A Lasting Power of Attorney appointing an independent trusted advisor can be a God-send.

• Achieving fairness, especially upon the parent’s death. Who gets what and when? Might the carer-child and their family lose their home, if they can’t afford to buy out the siblings after the parent’s death?

• What if the parent needs residential care? How is it to be paid for? Is there to be a buy-out option?

• Taxation complications: Watch out for the new Inheritance Tax: Residential Nil Rate Band and the 3% surcharge to Stamp Duty Land Tax, especially.

There is a lot to think about and every family is different. Clear and independent advice is so important. A bespoke solution is worth the investment.

This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Holistic skin care from Coltishall Clinic Look after your skin this summer Skin is the largest organ in the human body. It is our body’s first line of defence against the elements such as sun, wind, heat, pollution etc.

You may be surprised to learn than some skin cancers are caused by excessive sun exposure during our formative years of between 5 and 15 years of age. So it is especially important to use sun protection for children.

Also our capacity to form collagen and for skin to renew itself reduces from the age of 18 years. But, there are things we can do to slow down this process. Good skin care forms the foundation of skin health. So here are our recommendations.

SKIN CARE Cleanse and protect Cleanse to remove contaminants from the skin. Based on your type of skin you may choose a gentle or foaming cleanser or even a salicylic acid wash for oily skin. Good sun protection is vital. We are exposed to more artificial light from increasing light pollution so it makes sense to use a SPF 25 even indoors, especially for those of us who have pigmentation issues. Sun protection is not only for the face but also for the whole body including scalp, ears and hands. Exfoliate Dead skin build-up can give your skin a dull, dry, and lifeless look. Exfoliate to reveal softer, fresher, looking skin. You can use an exfoliating product or try our microdermabrasion treatments to remove dry patches and other minor skin imperfections. Hydrate Inside and Out Our bodies are made up of more than 60 per cent water, but throughout the day, we can become dehydrated, giving our skin a wrinkled, less firm appearance. To avoid drying out, drink plenty of water for internal hydration. External hydration is also important, so try applying facial and body lotions immediately following a shower to help seal in moisture. Repair We now have the technology to repair damaged skin. We have a range of medical grade skin care products available at variety of price points at the clinic such as agera, retriderm, heliocare, cell pro and obagi medical.

We also have prescription strength products for stronger effect! Our next step up the skin care pyramid is simple yet cost effective treatments such as light based treatments, gentle chemical peels or microdermabrasion. We do recommend a course of these for best results. For specific skin problems such as acne, rosacea and pigmentation we can use specialised skin care and laser treatments. Lasers can also be used very successfully to treat acne scarring, facial wrinkles and to achieve skin tightening. These procedures however may require a small amount of recovery time. These can be performed purely under local anaesthesia.

For more advanced skin changes we can offer more invasive treatments including surgical treatments. By offering a full range of skin care services – from skin creams to surgery, we can look after all your skin care needs over a lifetime. We also make recommendations based on your unique needs and not suggest treatments only because these are available. Log on to www.coltishallclinic.co.uk or call us on 0800 0430737 for more information or to book your consultation appointment. Coltishall Clinic Skin Care approach ©

St. Andrew`s Methodist Church is celebrating 50 years of witness this year.

The church, built in 1968, was the joining together of the former Station Road and Beeston Road Methodist chapels.

The church was dedicated and opened on 22 June 1968 and so on the weekend 23 - 24 June celebrated its special 50th Anniversary.

Our New Music Group led a time of Praise on the Saturday afternoon, which was followed by a celebratory tea enjoyed by over 80 people.

Our photo shows Mr David Starling, a lifelong Methodist and one of the few members who were present on the opening day and are still here, cutting the Anniversary cake.

On the Sunday, we were pleased to have Rev Julian Pursehouse, the Chair of the East Anglia District of the Methodist Church, to lead our morning worship.

Our Anniversary year, as well as looking back to the history of the church, celebrates the present and is looking towards the future.

Other events are being planned to continue celebrating this special year including Norfolk Day on 27 July; Harvest & 40s Weekend event on 15/16 September and Singing Christmas Praise on 15 December.

THE NORTH NORFOLK RAILWAY IS LOOKING FOR YOU! If you have some ‘free time’ and would like to get involved in one of Norfolk’s top tourist attractions, the North Norfolk Railway would love to hear from you.

The railway, which runs steam trains between Holt and Sheringham, is keen to recruit volunteers to lend a hand. Volunteers are needed for a variety of roles including Dining Train Staff, Ticket Office, Gift Shop and Buffet, Platform Supervisors and on train staff as well as many other positions..

Anyone interested in getting involved can find out more by visiting us for our informal ‘Volunteer Drop-in Days’ on the first Saturday of each month from 10am until 1pm in the Refreshment Rooms at Sheringham Station. You won’t need any specialist knowledge of railways to get involved, as whatever position you choose to volunteer in you will be trained for it.

Volunteers are all ages and come from various backgrounds to help us with the many different aspects of running the railway. It’s a great chance to help with something that is so much a part of the local community and to meet with such interesting people. For older people there is the camaraderie and for the young people there is the chance to be able to show prospective employers that you would be a willing employee.

Readers Write ...

Dennis is a volunteer Platform Supervisor and is going to tell you about a day at the North Norfolk Railway...

“As a uniformed member of staff I will be dressed in my three piece suit, white shirt and tie. I like to arrive at Sheringham at about 8.30am and park in the staff carpark. I start unlocking the gates leading from the main carpark. Ted, the Station Master will have already unlocked the buildings and then together we clean out the ticket office and waiting room, so that we are soon ready to receive our first passengers. By 9 o’clock we are ready to have our first cuppa of the day. After this we load the first train with the stock for the buffets on the stations further up the line. 9.50am is when, as train dispatcher, I must check all the doors are closed, signals are set correctly and then I can indicate to the guard that he may blow the whistle and wave his flag to let the train leave. Most days we run two trains on the line at about 50 minute intervals throughout the day and on each return to Sheringham the loco has to do a ‘runround’ and then be dispatched again. The day continues like this with breaks for tea and answering lots of questions from our passengers as well as visitors who have just ‘come to have a look’.

Dear Margaret,

There used to be several reader's letters in this mag and it used to be nice to hear people's views on things locally, but hardly ever a letter these days. Well I have something to sound off about. The charity shops. I think we all want the charities to do well and I for one have always given clothes and other articles to them over the years but the prices they are charging for second hand clothes seem to me to be rather over the top. For example, £ 5 or £6 for a second hand shirt, £3 for a t shirt. You can buy new for that or even less. I like to hear people’s views and nearly everyone I speak to in a charity shop says the same thing. Surely, if the prices were more realistic more would be sold. J. Lanham

I enjoy what I am doing because it helps to keep me fit, I meet lots of nice people and I get the chance to work with a BIG TRAIN SET. I am on the platform at Sheringham on Saturdays and then on Thursdays I volunteer at Holt. Each station is very different; Sheringham is the hustle and bustle station with a Station Master and two platform supervisors whilst at Holt I am the acting Station Master with perhaps one other member of staff as this seems more like an older quiet village station. I really enjoy what I do. It gives me job satisfaction helping people to enjoy the railway as well as having a great day among with my friends.”

If you cannot make it to one of our ‘Volunteer Drop-in Days’ then please phone the North Norfolk Railway’s station office on 01263 820800 for further details.

Weather with Ned Nimbus

The past three months of weather on the coast have been greatly affected by the position of a high pressure area that slowly but surely gained influence over our weather.

This was always going to be the case as a dominance of high pressure was forecast but any airstream coming in from a colder than normal North Sea would deal us a cold, misty or cloudy hand from time to time. 18

However, the forecast for a good summer continues into the next three months and this outlook has now been adopted by many forecasters moving from a negative stance.

Higher than normal pressure will continue so the threat of an airstream from the North Sea also continues from time to time although some intense heat this time could be brought to us from the south or south east and its attendant thundery outbreaks. Ned Nimbus 30.6.18 Sheringham Independent 491

Summer Spirit as Cley Calls to art and nature lovers

A long summer weekend of wildlife and creativity inspired by the unique North Norfolk landscape is coming to Cley from Thursday 2 until Sunday 5 August.

With Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s Aspinall Centre as its hub, Cley Calling Summer Spirit is a festival of writing, art, photography, music and performance, all inspired by the natural world. Each event in the festival reflects nature in a different way, through the eyes, the voice, the fingertips or the mind of a different artist.

For families, a two-day workshop will see one of the bird hides at Cley become a giant pinhole camera, with an exhibition of photos created. On the Saturday we are celebrating marine wildlife, with a free full day of ‘Ocean Commotion’ on the beach.

There will be performances from musician Toby Hay, and John Hinton will sing his ‘Ensonglopedia of Science’. Bringing her new book Eye of the Shoal, Helen Scales comes to Cley Calling to destroy the myth that fish are brute, unthinking creatures and to enchant us with the watery secrets of their lives.

North Norfolk artist Amelia Mills is enthralled

Sheringham Independent 491

by the shifting moods and shapes of the sea. For Cley Calling she will deliver a live demonstration of her unique style of capturing the North Sea waves in paint and exhibit her work in the Aspinall Centre for two weeks.

For some lovers of the wild, engaging with nature involves detailed study, description and naming. With its mix of grazing marsh, saltmarsh and reedbed, Cley is not only a celebrated site for birds. Its varied habitats are also home to many scarce or little-known species of moth so experts will be on hand during the festival to open their live traps and share a haul of moths whose beauty is matched only by the strange, poetic names.

Even less well known than moths are solitary bees, many of which are tiny and inhabit vanishing remnants of habitat. Nick Owens, author of Bees of Norfolk and Cley local, will lead a Cley Calling workshop on bee identification, aimed at complete beginners and established bee-lovers alike. We’ll be all abuzz with bee crafts and activities for families during the Friday too.

There is even more to this celebration of all

July 14th 2018

things wild in North Norfolk and of the wild creativity of people faced with nature - guided walks; a beach clean, barbecue on the terrace, wildlife watching - the summer spirit is strong at Cley Marshes.

This is the third year of Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s Cley Calling festivals. For the full events listing and to book events where required, go to www.cleycalling.com or call the NWT Visitor Centre at Cley on 01263 740008.

Cley Marshes centre manager, Ewan Carr said “The Cley Calling celebration will show off this great landscape and encourage people of all ages to engage with wildlife, nature and the creative responses it inspires. Please come along and enjoy a range of events, many for free, all with a stunning Cley backdrop.”

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Several people rang, who had seen Connor’s photograph in the last article, and would have liked to offer him a new home. However, this lovely lad had already left for his new home before the article was printed.

We have also reunited another cat with its family. When we received a call that a stray had been seen for a few weeks, I was able to check whether or not it was chipped and, as it was, I then found the details of his owner. As the cat was some distance from home and had been missing for several months, his family were delighted to learn that he was safe and well. We believe that, to be so far from home, he must have jumped into a vehicle without the driver realising. Another stray, however, had not been chipped so, after the usual checks at the vets and with paper collars, he is now safe in one of our pens waiting for someone to offer him a new home.

The ‘kitten season’ is now in full swing and there are many available, not only in rescue centres. but on websites and private sales. Because their health is vulnerable in the first weeks of life, we do not put ours up for adoption until they have had their health check with our vets, been given their first vaccination and been microchipped. Although, over the years, there have not been many, we have sadly lost some young kittens for various reasons - kittens that have seemed to be healthy but have had an underlying problem.

We also blood test the mothers if they are, either in our care, or we are helping with the cost to neuter them. If we do not know who the mother is, one of the kittens will be blood tested instead. If the blood tests indicate the cat/kitten is FIV positive we will need to find it an indoor home, either on its own or with other FIV positive cats, as they should not be allowed contact with FIV negative cats. We do not assume it will be the stray cats that have been infected as we have had cats come into care from a home environment who have the virus.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 it (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

Bobo is a gentle young cat who loves her food

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. You can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

Hedgehog Haven

Biscuit, who featured last time, does not have any sight in the right eye so has now gone to be cared for in an enclosed garden where he will have the freedom to roam, but will also be safe. Tiddles the hoglet (pictured) was handed into Westover Vets who then contacted me. He weighed 90grms and was approximately 2 weeks old. Hoglets this young are very time consuming as they need to be fed warm goats milk (hedgehogs are lactose intolerant) little & often and after each feed they also need toileting, something their mothers would do. Lots of patience was needed as Tiddles did not like being fed with a syringe but he is now gaining weight and letting me know when he is hungry!
