To keep yourself and beach wildlife safe, MCS says: leave animals where you find them carefully lift and replace any rocks you may have removed – there are animals underneath that need them for shelter leave attached seaweed in place – there is plenty lying loose on the shoreline do not trample through the rock pools play away from cliffs. continued on page 5

CROMER AND SHERINGHAM PROBUS CLUB

With the long hot summer we have been having, it is hard to imagine the bleak and cold Russian Far East. This however was the subject of a talk given to us on Tuesday 3 July by Mr Roger Townsin.

Roger's trip was an ‘Expedition Cruise’ which began in Japan but which focussed on the Russian island of Sakhalin, the Kamchatka peninsula and the Kuril Islands, which are also governed by Russia.

On arrival in Korsakov Sakhalinsk, the travellers were greeted with gifts of salt, bread and vodka - a traditional welcome, apparently! Roger gave us a lot of information -- with excellent photos -- about the local wildlife, including Steller's sea eagles and tufted puffins. We learnt also a little about the geology of the Kuril Islands which are part of the well-known 'Ring of Fire' around the Pacific, and are volcanic. In Petropavlovsk (Kamchatka) the visitors were again presented with bread and salt. (I am not sure what happened to the vodka!) In the countryside beyond Petropavlovsk, the snow can be five feet thick, although it tends to melt around trees, interestingly. Sperm whales are to be found in the Kamchatka region, attracted by the deep-sea squid. Roger spoke about many other aspects of the region, including some of its history and its indigenous peoples.

Roger gave us a very full and interesting talk and he was thanked by our new Chairman, Michael Webb.

Our next meeting will be at The Links Hotel, West Runton, on Tuesday 7 August when Dr John Beal will speak to us (after lunch) on ‘Toothache, Saints, and Churches’. If you are a retired or nearly retired professional or businessman and would like to join us at one of our future meetings, you will be warmly welcomed. Please contact our lunch secretary Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or visit our website www.candsprobus.club for more information.

SHERINGHAM & CROMER LIONS CLUB We have two exciting pieces of news for readers.

First we have had several requests from people to join our Club. This means that with our existing members the total membership will be nineteen, making us one of the largest Clubs in the County. This will enable us to do more fundraising and be able to help more local causes.

Secondly ee are holding a Charity Family Fun Day on Sunday 2 September at Mannington Estate, starting at 11am and ending at 5pm. There will be lots of food, drink and entertainment for all ages.

We hope to raise enough on that day to purchase a portable ECG machine for very sick children at the Jenny Lind Hospital, who will be represented on the day with information.

All welcome, entrance fee £6 per adult, concessions £5 and under 16s free. There is free parking including disabled parking for all.

Please join us on the day. There will be other charity stalls as well. Liz Bowler, Press Officer

RIP CURRENTS

Rips are strong currents that can quickly take swimmers from the shallows out beyond their depth. Lifeguards will show you where you can avoid rips but if you do get caught in one: stay calm – don’t panic if you can stand, wade don’t swim keep hold of your board or inflatable to help you float raise your hand and shout for help never try to swim directly against the rip or you’ll get exhausted swim parallel to the beach until free of the rip, then make for shore if you see anyone else in trouble, alert the lifeguards or call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.

TIDES A beach can seem like a vast playground, but the tide can come in surprisingly quickly. Many lifeboat and lifeguard rescues are to people getting cut off by the rising water. To prevent this happening to you, get local tidal information from the Harbour Master or the Tourist Information Centre. Always keep a look out for the direction of the tide while on the beach. Just be aware ... and if in doubt, move out!

SWIMMING, SURFING AND BODYBOARDING Surfing GB is the national governing body for surfing and bodyboarding. For further information, accredited training centres and recognised schools visit surfinggb.com or contact 07711 263584.

Don’t: ditch your board – it will keep you afloat in an emergency and make you easier to find Don’t: go alone Don’t: go in if the conditions are above your capability.

Wills Wills & LPAs LPAs –AM MUST UST H HAVE AVE

At Silver and Ward we pride ourselves in giving our clients peace of mind with our expert legal advice explained in plain English. We work extremely hard during our lives to provide for family and loved ones. However, the majority of us fail to ensure that continues if we become unwell, or when we pass away. So, how can you guarantee that? (1) LPAs (Lasting Power of Attorney) – are a safety net for you and your loved ones if you were to be involved in an accident, or have a diagnosis leading to diminished mental capacity. It is incredibly important to have them in place no matter how old you are. As surprising as it sounds, your spouse, or partner, does not have any legal right to make health decisions on your behalf, or deal with your money and property if you are unable to.

(2) Wills – can help you to secure a future for those you leave behind. If you do not leave a Will the Law decides who will inherit your estate. This may not be what you want and it is unlikely to provide adequately for your family. A Will prepared by Silver and Ward can provide reassurance and peace of mind for you and your family and help reduce any risks and pitfalls that may arise in the future. We will write it in plain English to avoid any misunderstandings. We offffer fixed fees for Wills and LPAs so you know immediately how much it is going to cost and a FREE INITIAL APPOINTMENT. We can meet with you in your home, Nursing Home, or Hospital at no extra cost.

In the words of Benjamin Franklin “Never leave till tomorrow that which you can do today”.

Hedgehog Haven

It's an extra busy summer with the hot dry weather so many hoglets are coming into care as the mothers cannot find any food or water so cannot feed their young, which means they are abandoning the babies or dying from starvation.

CT Scanner

has now been installed at Toll Barn Vets to help your pet’s diagnosis & treatment

CT scanners use radiation in the same way as x-rays but allow a complete 3D image of the pet with specialised software, thus allowing advanced reconstructions, including 3D skeletal, blood vessel and soft tissue reconstructions.

There are four in this litter, I have another litter of three who need syringe feeding and another litter of two. That's without the other hogs who are in care & need cleaning out etc. I'm also getting messages from all over the county about finding hedgehogs in trouble. I try to advise where the nearest rescue centre is but I have been told that all rescue centres are full to bursting like myself so please offer a shallow dish of water & meaty pet food. It can be a lifesaver to a mother and her hoglets.

Holt and District Probus Club

We are told that you can see the Great Wall of China from space, but Catherine Hull saw it close up when she went to walk a length of the Wall.

HANDYMAN Clint Brown Property Services

After the Feathers had dished up a delicious meal (including poached salmon with hollandaise sauce) earlier this month, Catherine explained her deeply felt personal reasons for supporting the cancer charity Clic Sargent. Catherine persuaded friends and acquaintances to sponsor her walk in aid of the charity.

Catherine went on to tell members of Holt and District Probus Club about some of her experiences.

There were places where they had to climb down the face of the Wall to avoid forbidden stretches - and then had to climb up again when the closed area had been bypassed. Although the impression often given by photographs is that the Wall is almost like a level highway, this is far from the case and in places it is more like rock climbing.

Catherine Hull, the speaker

The group was led by a Chinese guide whose real name was a mystery to them but answered, luckily, to ‘Dave’.

Catherine told us of the delights of ’real’ Chinese food, and the friendly and courteous nature of the people she met.

Meetings of Holt and District Probus Club are normally held at lunchtime on 1st Thursday each month at The Feathers in Holt. Enquiries about membership (or about a trial visit - visitors are most welcome) should be made to Secretary Alan Holmes on 01263 710782.

WEYBOURNE WI GET CRAFTY WITH PAVERPOL Members of Weybourne WI spent a fascinating afternoon when Amanda Seales gave a demonstration on the art of making models using Paverpol. She also displayed several finished examples of her work.

Paverpol is a non-toxic liquid resin and Amanda first read about using it for modelling in a flower arranging magazine. She later attended a workshop to learn the craft. She now runs workshops herself.

Amanda showed us how she begins a model by twisting garden wire to form the frame of a person, called an ‘armature’. This is then wrapped in crumpled foil, before being covered in scraps of fabric, which have been soaked in the resin.

Paverpol can be purchased on line in several different colours and also in a clear form. Amanda described how she uses a variety of items from around the house for her modelling, including scraps from old t-shirts and pieces of lace. She also uses shredded dishcloths to make ‘hair’.

When first constructed, models remain soft and pliable for about 24 hours, but once set hard they will last for years. They can even be kept outdoors, although Amanda recommended they should be painted with varnish first.

Members asked questions following the demonstration and several expressed an interest in attending a workshop. The vote of thanks was given by Carol Jones.

The afternoon concluded with refreshments, including a selection of delicious cakes made by Heather Dakin, to celebrate her recent birthday. Sheringham Independent 492

Ageing Disgracefully

I’ve come to the decision, I won’t age gracefully! My Mum always made me dress so tastefully My clothes so neat and tidy, shoes polished to a shine. But that was then, and this is now - Hell, I’m sixty nine! No ‘scooters for the elderly’ for me, thanks very much. I’m going to have a quad bike for my shopping trips and such. I’ll wear a long, black, silk-lined cloak, and a big, black, floppy hat, A black silk scarf around my neck - just like a manic bat! I won’t care what people think, nor even what they say! I’ll charge round on my quad bike and go my own sweet way! I’ll go dancing every night, do handstands and cartwheels! I’m growing old disgracefully, a hellion on four wheels! Frances Wraight

Goats on a Slope now have their own merchandise Local artist’s work to adorn range of souvenirs honouring popular Bagots

North Norfolk’s famous herd of Bagot goats are now the stars of their own merchandise.

The popular goats, who spend the summer on habitat-management duty on the cliff at Cromer, have proved to be a popular draw for tourists – and fans can now take home some souvenirs of the herd.

The Goats on a Slope range of goodies, which include mugs, tea-towels, ceramic fridge magnets, mounted prints, postcards, key rings and coasters, all feature original artwork by Ian Richardson, a North Norfolk District Council employee who has what until recently was a hidden talent for drawing.

“I did panic when I was first asked to do this as no one really knew Goats on a Slope merchandise what kind of design was required and it was all a bit overwhelming. I do art mainly as a hobby! Ian said.

“I tried a host of different designs before having an epiphany at 5.30am at my breakfast table of how the goats should look.

The range was officially launched on Norfolk Day 27 July 27 at the North Norfolk Information Centre in Cromer Artist Ian Richardson, left, and NNDC when Ian was on hand to sign the Animal Control officer Mark Frosdick merchandise. There are also some with some of the new merchandise limited-edition prints available.

The merchandise follows last year’s ‘Goat Tote’ bag, which proved popular.

As well as being popular with locals and tourists, the nine nannies and 10 kids carry out an important habitat-management role. In the past, the cliff area has become overgrown, leading to a problem with litter embedded and snagged in bushes. The Bagot goats graze on rough materials rather than grass, and that helps keep plant growth across the area under control.

It has also negated the need for North Norfolk District Council to spend taxpayers’ money on keeping the cliff in good order.

Front Garden Competition and Open Garden Event in Sheringham

Flower Festival Success

Sheringham in Bloom is pleased to announce that the competition for the Best Front Garden will be held again during the next two months.

We are asking all the people of Sheringham to look around as they are walking into town or anywhere in Sheringham, and if you notice a particularly nice front garden to let us know so that we can send our judges out to have a look and to judge whether it is worth a prize.

The last two years of this competition have been very successful, and we hope to receive a lot of nominations. So, if you see a great garden we would appreciate your taking a few minutes to contact us by telephone 01263 825242 or email me on joanthame123@gmail.com. We will then arrange for our judges to visit each of the gardens nominated and select the best for an award. The deadline for contacting us is 30 August as this will give a chance for the judges to still see the gardens at their best.

This special festival event was an enormous success with over 3000 visitors ranging from five weeks to over 100 years old admiring the exceptional talent of the flower arrangers who interpreted 24 Golden Moment events over the past 50 years with stunning arrangements overflowing with colour creativity and beauty, all enhanced by organists providing background music. Our photos show two of the arrangements titled ‘Queens Golden Jubilee’ and ‘Rescue by Lifeboat’.

The cafeteria and stalls were kept busy throughout the festival too, as folk enjoyed a chat and refreshments and a browse around the various stalls. The event raised a net total of £10,996.10 and from this a donation of £1,100 was given to Sheringham RNLI who were the designated charity for the 2018 festival. Photos of each arrangement will be available to view shortly on our church website www.sheringhammethodist.org.uk

Also we are sending £53 to the Fairtrade Charity Traidcraft Exchange, helping marginalised people in the developing world to improve their livelihood.by perhaps changing their main crop from rice to tea.

Sheringham Community and Theatre Wardrobe

Many thanks to those of you who came to our sale in July. It has helped make a little space at the wardrobe and generated some funds to help with the upkeep of our costumes.

We are always busy with all sorts of costume requests but are now especially looking forward to bookings for the Carnival season and the 1940s weekend in September. 16

Our website is not operating at the moment but we are hoping to get a new website up and running soon. In case you do not have our contact details, they are listed below.

Visits to the wardrobe are strictly by appointment and we do not have regular opening times but try to be as flexible as possible to suit our customers and volunteers.

Please ring, leave a message or text one of the following numbers, leaving your name and number and we will contact you as soon as possible. Nona 07775 451 232 or Libby 07391 272 469

Funding confirmed for third year of ground-breaking sports project Cabinet hears that North Norfolk District Council scheme is going from strength to strength

The ground-breaking Sporting Centre of Excellence (SCOE) scheme run by North Norfolk District Council has been guaranteed funding for a third year. The unique and successful programme has already seen more than 150 young people attend coaching sessions during its first two years.

SCOE was set up with the aim of providing young people with top-quality coaching in endurance running, cricket, netball and hockey, and at excellent facilities. These children might not otherwise have had access to such good coaching or facilities. NNDC’s Cabinet heard that the first two years of the project had seen all the participants improve. All of North Norfolk’s secondary schools have been represented in the scheme, which uses the facilities at Gresham’s School, Holt. Sport England has hailed the project as being innovative and demonstrating best practice. Many of the young people, aged 11-14, have subsequently been selected to represent Norfolk

in their chosen sports, and some have competed at a national standard: • Ten athletes have been selected to represent Norfolk in cross-country, with one girl finishing third in the national cross-country championships, out of more than 400 competitors. • Three boys in the cricket programme have reached county standard and have been invited to the county squad and training sessions. • Most of the netball players have been invited to join high-standard netball teams. • One boy has been identified as being a naturallygifted hockey goalkeeper. Specific goalkeeper coaching has been arranged for him and he has been invited to join a top Norfolk hockey club. Cllr Becky Palmer, NNDC Portfolio Holder for Leisure, told the meeting “It’s the only one in the country of its kind and I think it’s been a remarkable scheme over the two years that we’ve had so far.” Cllr John Lee, Leader of NNDC and of the Conservative Group, added “I have enjoyed presenting certificates to runners, cricketers, netball players and hockey players over the past couple of

months since I became Leader. The vast majority of these children wouldn’t otherwise have had the chance to use these facilities.” The project was originally launched by former gymnast and Commonwealth Games gold-medal winner Craig Heap. The Cabinet has agreed to allocate funding of £20,000 towards the scheme’s third year.

After the meeting, Cllr Sarah Butikofer, Leader of the Lib Dem Group at NNDC, said “I’m obviously delighted that the council has decided to continue to support this fantastic initiative, which helps so many of our young people to realise their sporting potential.” Cllr John Rest, Leader of the Independent Group at NNDC, said “It is perfect timing to secure funding for the sports stars and athletes of the future.”

Planning application submitted for Community Sports Hub Three indoor tennis courts will be at the centre of a key sports development proposed by North Norfolk District Council, bringing sport and leisure benefits to all ages, all year round.

Plans for a £3.2m Community Sports Hub in Cromer have been submitted. The project is being developed in conjunction with the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and Cromer Academy, whose students will directly benefit from the new facilities. The facility will provide better access to high quality tennis and benefit all ages, with a wider plan to double participation for young people in North Norfolk and beyond.

Following positive community feedback to a public consultation held in the town in April, asking for views on the project, the planning application has been lodged by Saunders Boston Architects on behalf of North Norfolk District Council.

with a bid made to the Lawn Tennis Association to fund the remainder.

Subject to the LTA funding agreement, a land exchange with the Academy and planning approval, the new facility is planned to open by Summer 2019.

For more information about the project, including a set of frequently asked questions, visit www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/tasks/projects/community-sports-hub/ Transforming British Tennis Together is the largest and most exciting capital investment programme the LTA has ever undertaken. Read more here: www.lta.org.uk/venue-management/facilities-advice/#

It will be considered at a meeting of NNDC’s Development Committee later in the year.

The plan will provide the only indoor tennis facility in the district and build on the reputation of some of the finest grass courts in the UK at the adjacent facility owned by the council and managed by the Cromer Lawn Tennis and Squash Association.

The purpose-built centre includes three indoor tennis courts, along with a 25 station gym with an area for free weights and associated facilities, and a versatile space for fitness classes, social activities and meetings. People will now be able to respond to the planning application, which will be registered and placed on NNDC’s website in the next few days.

In addition to the main facility, the Council is seeking to provide additional improvements to other tennis facilities in the district with a total cost of almost £3.2m. The financing model sees the council contributing 75% – around £2.4m –

The Beauty of August

I see purple heather on the hill, bright red poppies in the rye, the sun is shining brightly against a clear blue sky. A thrush is eating berries in a rowan tree, I get a little closer, he doesn't notice me. The combines are busy, and making quite a dust. I must look for my paintbox, painting nature is a must. I love to walk through the heather on a warm summer's day, the time goes so quickly when good weather comes our way. Diane Berthelot
