1940s WEEKEND 2018
The atmosphere in Sheringham, Weybourne, and Holt was sparkling with 1940s charm two weeks ago at the annual 40s weekend. For getting in the mood, an impressive musical line-up included the Skyliner Big Band, The Nightingales, Sarah Probert and more. Some visitors took the opportunity to enjoy some swing dancing or the jitterbug.. The people of the towns and many from outside them took to costume with imaginative results. Army officers were not all;
Celebrate with Friends, Family and Colleagues mechanics, school teachers, and more to be seen. Tailored suits, military regalia, waistcoats, dungarees and others in a huge variety of war rationing era utility clothes.

POORS AND PLOUGHLET TRUST
A Helping Hand this Christmas
A Trust in Sheringham/Upper Sheringham is hoping to make Christmas a little bit easier for some families through the award of grants.
People in the town can apply for a Christmas Grant from the Poors and Ploughlet Trust, which was set up to give financial assistance to people residing in what was the Ancient Parish of Sheringham and Upper Sheringham.
Holt and District Probus Club
After lunch on 6 September at The Feathers in Holt, Col Gordon Lane gave a lively and interesting talk to Holt and District Probus Club about the Gurkha regiments and in particular, the Gurkha Welfare Trust.
Grants are made each December to assist with the expenses of Christmas and to provide a festive “perk”.
Applicants must be in receipt of a means tested benefit such as Pension Credit, Housing Benefit, Council Tax Rebate or a similar benefit.
The Trust is also able to give financial assistance to people who can show a particular need, for example those who might need household repairs, household equipment or aids towards a specific disability. The Trust can also help certain groups such as young and old peoples’ organisations and community groups.
The overall consideration is that the applicant has to satisfy the residential qualification previously mentioned and to show that there is a need for assistance.
The Charity is a long established Parish charity, is very well off and routinely does not spend all its income. The Trustees would like to attract more applications, including for the Christmas Grants. These have for years been routinely provided to people who are entitled to means tested benefits and living within the ancient Parish boundaries.
To apply for a Christmas Grant please get in touch with the Secretary of the Trust, Sally Gill by calling 01263 514559 or mailing sallyg5@btinternet.com The closing date for applications is 10 November 2018.

Speaker Gordon Lane
Gordon said that in the 1814-15 war between the East India Company and the Gorkha Kingdom, now known as Nepal the British were very impressed with their opponents, whom they called Gurkhas. This led to the formation of Gurkha regiments as part of the British Army. 26 Victoria Crosses have been awarded to members of the Gurkha regiments over their 200 years of service. The bravery and service of these men in both World Wars and other ‘troubles’ since, has left a debt of gratitude and honour.
But the ordinary serving Gurkha soldier would retire to his village and find himself destitute as he reached old age in the 1960s. The Gurkha Welfare Trust was formed to give support to retired soldiers and their dependants. The Trust is organised and financed by donation, so that it can guarantee to maintain an agreed pension to a pensioner for life, and to give support to widows (and sometimes children) as well.
It is a UK charity and relies upon lifetime gifts, donations and bequests from Wills; such gifts enjoy tax-free status. The Trust has a stall at many events, such as the Forties Weekend at Holt and Sheringham and the Sandringham Flower Show.
Meetings of Holt and District Probus Club are normally held at lunchtime on the 1st Thursday each month at the Feathers in Holt. Enquiries about membership (or about a trial visit - visitors are most welcome) should be made to Secretary Alan Holmes on 01263 710782.

1940s WEEKEND 2018 Continued from front cover...
Hair could come in victory rolls—double or with a side parting—or with a headscarf Land Girl or Rosie the Riveter style. A 1940s fashion show was held at St Andrew’s Church Hall in Holt. Vintage buses ferried passengers between the towns; army vehicles, trucks and motorbikes lined the streets. To cap it off was a military vehicle parade in Sheringham organised by Graham Deans and the Sheringham Carnival committee. North Norfolk Railway organised the event once again. Their impressive steam trains were a highlight of the two days. A chance to take a steamy trip back in time at the stations of the towns. NAAFI at Weybourne offered wartime rations and the surprisingly popular and supremely nostalgic Spam sandwiches. Another fun, and successful, weekend out for all the family.
Photos Provided by Isaac C-Knight and Robin Myerscough The 1940s weekend saw Tesco invite dancers from Ceroc Fusion to come and dance outside their store and help raise funds for Help for Heroes (totalled £170 raised). The Ceroc dancers all got into the theme of the weekend and dressed in 1940s style also decorating their dance area with a radio bunker and some original 1940s items. Music was played each day from that era and attracted lots of attention with many taking photos whilst passengers waiting railway platform were also kept entertained.

For the past 18 months all at Coast 2 Coast live stream sea fishing have been raising money for the RNLI by doing little matches, get-togethers and raffles. Last year we raised over £650. This year so far we have raised over £590 with further fundraising to happen. We have 18 dedicated live streamers that let you see what’s happening when we fish whether its highs or lows. We have found that this proves very popular with people who are unable to sea fish anymore or people just listening to the sound of the sea to help them sleep.

Our members can interact with the streamers live by asking questions and showing rigs or just general chit chat. Our page is growing all the time and we have a great team of admins and moderators, so there is always somebody on hand to help or assist anglers. We have a registered charity number for the RNLI and we are always looking at ways of raising funds for these brave men and women. We would also like to thank the Norfolk County Council for their help with our last meet.
Celebrating Christmas Stockings
At All Saints Church, Beeston Regis we have staged a series of successful events during the year to raise funds for our Hospitality Project. When it came to an event for Christmas we wanted to try something different from a Tree Festival which is already done very well in Sheringham.
So, we came up with the idea of a Christmas Stocking Festival which we are calling Celebrating Christmas Stockings.
We hope to have an interesting range of stockings. Some people are busily making stockings of different styles, materials and sizes. We are grateful for the support of Stitch2Gether sewing group who are making some of the stockings.
We would be pleased to receive any offers of Christmas Stockings whether recently made or family heirlooms to add to our display. We would also welcome any stories or memories about ‘opening stockings at Christmas’ to add additional interest to the displays. Our aim is to provide a colourful exhibition to brighten the gloomy days of early December. If you are able to help us in any way please telephone Derek or Elsa on 01263 824389.

Huge investment planned for public lavatories in north Norfolk, but Holt loses out again Holt Town Council is incensed that Holt has not been included in the recent investment of £600,000 in public toilet facilities.
North Norfolk District Council has announced, with a flourish, their huge investment but Holt, recently reclassified as a tourist town, will see none of this investment. Cllr Moore said “Holt Town Council took over the Church Street toilet block when NNDC threatened it with closure as we recognised the need to have a second toilet block in the town. The importance of providing public conveniences is now supported by the leaders of all three groups at the District Council with a recent press release stating that, ‘NNDC regards the provision of public conveniences, as a key service, underpinning the district’s tourism offering as well as town centre economies’.

It is sad that this does not seem to apply to the ‘Tourist Town’ of Holt.”
To add insult to injury car park revenue has allowed NNDC to invest in the toilets in Sheringham, Wells, Fakenham, North Walsham, Bacton and Walcott but, as Holt Town Council were keen to point out, the Albert Street Car Park in Holt is one of the best revenue incomes in the district.
Cllr Allison said that it seemed unbelievable that North Norfolk District Council stated they are committed to providing public toilets for the benefit of both residents and visitors alike but alas, not dedicated to providing upgraded facilities for Holt.

Dear Margaret,
On Tuesday 21 August I had an accident, resulting in a fall into Cromer Road, Sheringham. I received a blow to the head. Many people stopped to help me - all being helpful and no ‘lookers on’. A car driver stopped his car a little way from me and together with another driver, moved their cars to block our side of the road. They both lifted me on to the pavement where I saw about five people, all first aiders waiting to help. One went to the community hub, attached to Tescos, and brought a chair for me and I was helped to sit down. A man came with them who was also a First Aider. One young lady telephoned for an ambulance but was told it would be two hours arriving. She then telephoned the surgery (only a short distance away) and then my husband. In the meantime one of the drivers crouched beside me holding my hand and another young lady knelt the other side wiping the blood from my face, neck and hands, then holding that hand. A team of the Duty Doctor, a nurse, a second doctor and a Health Care Assistant took me to the surgery in a wheel chair where once again I received very good care. They rang an ambulance and were told it would take four hours for one to come so my husband took me to the NNUH. Fortunately there was not too much traffic. Again help was given immediately. This too was very good. I tried to thank everyone at the time, but this was not possible so could I ask you if you would print my thanks, please. I am truly grateful for all the care I received. I felt truly blessed. Yours truly, J Willingale
REMEMBERING THE 1918 ARMISTICE
Sunday 11 November 2018 marks one hundred years precisely since the signing of the armistice that brought an end to the First World War.
In common with most rural villages, Thorpe Market lost 14 of their young men. Three are buried in the churchyard.
Many of the names on the war memorials in the church had been present in Thorpe Market for centuries. Most of them have now disappeared, in some cases as a direct result of the Great War.
We will be holding a service for Remembrance Sunday at 10.30am on 11 November.
The church has so far managed to trace living relatives for 10 of the men who died, and we hope to see many of them at the service. A chance for ex village residents to renew old acquaintances.
This is work in progress. We are preparing family trees, details of the homes they left behind and their military records, their regimental music.
If you are a relative, or have information about any of those who died – please do contact us.
We are still seeking information about Cecil Burdett who may have a Colby connection and the name Bates in his family, Hebert Keeler who died aged 36, having also fought in the Boer War and William Turner whose father came from Roughton. Sheringham Independent 496

Sheringham WW1 100 years Commemoration
Macmillan Success
Sheringham WI have become a partner in the Sheringham WW1 100 years Commemoration project.
Well - another amazing day at Woodlands Caravan Park in Upper Sheringham on Saturday 15th September! This wonderful community of friendly Macmillan Supporters raised another £2260! This brings the total raised since September 2015 to £9986!
Bridget Mayes and her brilliant team of helpers started the day with their Coffee Morning which was a huge success and then Peter Sanderson, Robin, Cherry, Hazel, the bar staff and Julie Butt (who could ever refuse to buy a raffle ticket from such a wonderful seller?) held a 1940's evening which was a wonderful success yet again and a lovely friendly atmosphere!
What a result - well done and Macmillan Cancer Support North Norfolk Committee would like to thank you all for your support!
Our pictures show Peter Sanderson and Bridget Mayes taking a well-earned rest and sneaking a quick cuddle at Woodlands Caravan Park on Saturday night, while Julie Butt shows how much she enjoys selling raffle tickets in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support - thank you all so much for your hard work!

The WI want to show how it is important as a whole community we remember those men and boys of Sheringham who left to fight for freedom and never returned. The WI member's husbands, father's sons and brothers, who cheerily left the town amongst waving flags ... never to return.
The WI are therefore creating a poppy installation that will be on display at various locations over the weekend. It will reflect the fishing heritage of our community and the men who left but are not forgotten.
If any individuals, groups or organisations wish to make sew knit crochet any poppies they would be much appreciated and can be left at the Town Hall or Community Centre or at the Community Poppy Afternoon. This community making session will be on Saturday 13 October run by the WI for everyone, adult or child, to come and join in, from 2pm - 5 pm with tea and biscuits. This is a free event designed to bring all sectors of the community together to help us remember what the Sheringham men gave their lives for. Bringing your own scissors would be helpful.

3 Mountains in 3 Days! We did it!
Our intrepid Hilltop Team are feeling on top of the world having conquered our 3 Mountains in 3 days Challenge and we’ve got the blisters to prove it!
On Saturday 1 September 26 people, over half of the Hilltop Team set off in a convoy of vehicles for the journey from Sheringham headed for the Scottish Highlands to conquer 3 Mountains in 3 Days to raise funds for Nelsons Journey – a Norfolk charity, which supports children and young people who have experienced the death of a special person in their life, as part of their 20th Anniversary.
After a gruelling 13-hour journey we got some sleep ahead of our big day. After meeting up with our mountain guide and former Hilltop employee Adam Ferne for the challenge, the team of 26 of us with varied skill level, ability and knowledge of the mountains set off at a keen and fast pace to ascend Ben Nevis (the highest mountain in the UK). We Reached the Summit at 2.30pm beating our group target of 8 hours, with the last of the walkers coming in at an impressive 7.5 hours!
Seeing the friendly and familiar faces of Laura and Karen our support team on Day 1 with a healthy supply of coffee, chocolate bars and hugs was happily received by each and every walker.
Arriving at Wasdale YHA after a 7-hour drive we collapsed at 2am into our beds ahead of an early start to climb Scafell Pike, mountain

With a sense of elation, exhaustion and bursting with pride we arrived at the summit of Snowdon at 2pm on Tuesday, there were tears and hugs at what we had managed to achieve together as a team, the Hilltop team, to raise money for our Charity of Choice Nelson’s Journey.
The long drive home from Wales was almost as challenging with the final team member driving into the Hilltop gates at 2.30am on Wednesday 5 September.

2 tough days of rain, mist and cloud!
Following another early start, it was time to face the 3rd mountain, Snowdon in Wales and as we headed off for the final mountain of our challenge every single part of us was beyond exhausted but with some serious grit and determination we started to wind our way up Snowdon. We were treated to a gloriously sunny day following
Oliver Read, Operations Director at Hilltop Outdoor Centre said “I feel immensely proud of the whole Hilltop team for their commitment to this challenge, it has been an epic experience for everyone that (in the true spirit of Hilltop) has created memories that will last a lifetime. We have been overwhelmed by the support we have received and the generosity of sponsorship from friends, family, suppliers and customers of Hilltop and wish to thank everyone for helping us raise money for Nelson’s Journey”
Simon Wright, Chief Executive at Nelsons Journey said “Hilltop have been a significant supporter of Nelson’s Journey for 20 years and we are delighted that they have committed to raise funds for us in our 20th year by taking on the 3 mountains challenge. Funds raised by Hilltop and the other 19 businesses will support the employment costs of a Child Bereavement Support Worker, helping to ensure we can continue to provide our free support to Norfolk’s families.”
We are astounded that we are well on our way to raising over £5,000 for Nelson’s Journey.

Summer Notes from the Commons
What a summer 2018 has been, especially after the very cold spring. The months of June, July and August have been the equal of the long hot summer of 1976. At one point the Sheringham area had not had a drop of rain for over six weeks. Such ‘drought’ conditions can affect wildlife in different ways, however, Beeston Common was an oasis as its streams continued to run and for the most part the wildflowers and insects flourished. Mark Clements and I have been out and about most days recording the rich biodiversity of the Commons and a selection of our observations follow.
known as the Banded General. Two Red Kites were observed by Mark passing at separate times over the Common (26 June) and he also spotted a rare white variety of the Marsh Helleborine a couple of days later (28 June). The following day (29 June) Mark saw another Red Kite and three Common Buzzards overflying to finish the month off in style.

A total of 25 butterfly species were seen during July. Also spotted was the large day-flying Oak Egger moth and there were also sightings of both Adder and Grass Snake.
The resident pair of Moorhens was seen with four young (2 August), which was good news as they had lost an earlier clutch of eggs to a Essex and Small Skipper predator, possibly a Carrion Crow. Butterflies butterflies were noted by were still very much in evidence with Brimstone, Mark (1 July) as well as Peacock and Painted Lady putting in an the large Brown Hawker appearance during the first week of August. dragonfly with its A Banded Demoiselle was spotted (6 August) distinctive bronze wings. and Mark found a Speckled Bush-cricket (11 An Emerald Damselfly August). Divorcing couples forced to embellish allegations in divorce petitions
Making the decision to divorce can be an incredibly difficult one. Many couples will want the process to be as straight forward as possible at a time where emotions are running high. Unfortunately, the current legal framework can cause further complications for couples.
There is only one ground for divorce and that is that the marriage has broken down irretrievably. Currently, the law states that this has to be proven by relying upon one or more of the following facts: "unreasonable behaviour", adultery, desertion, 2 years separation with consent, or 5 years separation. If you have not been separated for the requisite period then you have a difficult decision to make. Either you wait, or you rely upon one of the other facts which means apportioning blame to the other party. "Unreasonable behaviour" is the fact most commonly cited but by its very nature can cause a whole host of problems in the relationship. It can cause animosity, cause problems in reaching solutions in terms of the finances and children and make it difficult to end a relationship on good terms.
The case of Tini Owens has been in the media spotlight recently as she tried to divorce her husband of 40 years on the basis of his "unreasonable behaviour". The Supreme Court unanimously
rejected her arguments and concluded that his behaviour was not sufficiently unreasonable to grant a divorce. Tini was understandably devastated by this news as she now has to remain married until 2020. A recent survey has found that couples feel pressured into exaggerating allegations in a divorce petition, or to "bend the truth", so that the reasons given are more likely to be found sufficient, if challenged. This is because couples are becoming more and more concerned that a petition could be rejected by the Court as was seen in the Owens case. Contested divorce proceedings are rare. In fact less than 1% of all divorces are defended each year. This is because it can be extremely costly, complicated and many view it as unproductive. Although the number of contested cases are relatively small, people are clearly concerned about it happening. This is probably due to the widespread reporting of the Owens case.
The Owens decision has prompted debate about the appropriateness of the current legislation and the need for review. Should you be forced to stay trapped in a marriage that you consider is over even if the other party doesn't agree? The current law makes it difficult to end a relationship on good terms, due to the requirement to apportion blame. This directly conflicts with other principles in family law such as reducing confrontation and conflict and encouraging couples to talk directly to find the right

solution for them.
In a recent survey of more than 1,000 divorcees, 80% said they would rather have the option of a 'no-fault' approach to divorce. More than 1 in 4 surveyed said that attributing fault caused more tension between them and their ex-partner, and reduced their previous hopes of being able to divorce in a friendly manner. Not only does the process of attributing fault add to their own anger, it can also cause upset to other parties, such as their children. If the law were to provide for 'no-fault' divorce, it may reduce bitterness between the parties meaning more amicably settlements which could save them time and money. However, some argue this approach would make the process of getting a divorce a lot easier, increasing the number of divorces and may be seen as an "easy way-out", but if the law isn't updated there may be a rise in exaggerated and embellished allegations which has its own problems! As the weather turns autumnal, the small hogs coming in will probably not reach their release weight in time for a safe winter hibernation. One such case is Buttercup (pictured). She was found out during the day on the pavement on Mundesley Road in North Walsham, cold & very wobbly on her feet. Fortunately her finder picked her up, knowing that a hedgehog out during the day is not ok. At only 150 gms this little one will certainly be overwintering with me. In the last couple of weeks six hogs have left to be released but as soon as a hutch becomes empty another hog arrives to fill that space!
Remember little Boris? He is little no longer and will be being released in the near future. You can find me on Facebook for all the latest news on the hogs.

Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club
On Tuesday 4 September, after a delicious lunch, we were treated to a very interesting talk about the North Norfolk Railway by Mr Trevor Eady. After retiring from aviation, in 2006 he became a volunteer guard on the NNR and eventually became General Manager (now retired). Under his watch more trains were added to the timetable as were many more special events, such as the Dad’s Army weekend. The 1940s weekend is also a great success as so many businesses in Sheringham are now also involved, as well as the general public. The Santa Specials are also popular but now suffer competition from elsewhere! The NNR now attracts more than 166,000 visitors a year and has 376 volunteers as well as 55 staff, amongst several departments, of which engineering is the largest. Trevor also told us more about the engineering side of the business and showed us slides of many locomotives, both steam and diesel. Bringing in ‘new’ locomotives is a major operation, as anyone who lives or works near Sheringham’s main car park can attest! Trevor told us a lot more about the NNR, including the fact that Weybourne station (proudly involved in a Dad’s Army episode!) is the only place on the line with two tracks. There were a good number of questions after this excellent talk, and Trevor was thanked by our Chairman, Michael Webb. Our next meeting will be at The Links Hotel, West Runton on Tuesday 2 October, when David Morton will speak to us on "The Tower of London". Retired or nearly retired professional or businessman? A warm welcome awaits our meetings. Please contact our lunch secretary Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or visit our website www.candsprobus.club for more information.

WEYBOURNE WI MEET LILAC LADIES At their September meeting, Weybourne WI members enjoyed an inspiring talk by the founders of LILAC (Ladies in League Against Cancer), Theresa Cossey and Gaye Youngman.
Theresa began as a trustee for The Big C Appeal back in 1980. She and Gaye opened the first charity shop on Castle Meadow in 1995. There are now ten Big C shops throughout Norfolk. Theresa was awarded the MBE in 2000.
Both Theresa and Gaye eventually resigned from the Big C committee, but were keen to continue with fund raising for the charity and this was when they had the idea for LILAC.
It started in 2005, with a few ladies holding a fund raising lunch and membership has since grown to 240. They now organise a variety of fund raising events each year and expressed gratitude to Jarrolds store in Norwich for being very supportive of the charity.
Money raised by LILAC to date is more than £300,000, which has helped to buy vital equipment, support research projects and Cancer Information Centres at local hospitals. In addition, they now also sponsor a student each year at the UEA Biomedical Centre. There were several questions from members following the talk and a vote of thanks was given by Maureen Isbell.
Richard West
The subscription to become a member of LILAC is £5 and more information can be found on Facebook @lilacinnorfolk

State-of-the-art Community Sports Hub moves a step closer Planning permission granted as District Council works to make North Norfolk an even better place for sport
The building of a brand new ÂŁ3.2m Community Sports Hub for North Norfolk moved a step closer today with the granting of planning permission.
The decision by the Development Committee at North Norfolk District Council means another hurdle has been cleared in the bid to provide the community with state-of-the-art facilities, including three indoor tennis courts, a 25-station gym, a social area and viewing gallery, and a space for fitness classes, social activities and meetings.
The Sports Hub was identified in the council’s Indoor Sports Facility Strategy, published in 2015, and sought to provide indoor tennis courts, which have historically existed in Cromer and for which there has been long-term demand.
It is a joint project, with NNDC working alongside the Lawn Tennis Association, which it is anticipated will fund about 25% of the cost; Cromer Academy; and the Cromer Lawn Tennis and Squash Association (CLTSA). The new tennis courts will be available for use by the public, members of the CLTSA and academy students.
The Community Sports Hub will build on the existing relationship between the council and the CLTSA, with the association already receiving a subsidy of £25,000 a year from NNDC. With the council’s financing for the new development already in place and planning permission now granted, the scheme is now just waiting for the LTA to confirm its funding and for the CLTSA to give its backing to a land swap that has already been agreed by
NNDC and the academy.
Cllr John Lee, Leader of North Norfolk District Council and a Conservative Ward Member for Suffield Park, said “As a local member, I’m really excited at having this fabulous facility built in my ward. As Leader of the Council, I'm extremely proud of the investment that we are committing to this project, which will provide first-class facilities for North Norfolk’s tennis players and prospective players, but more importantly offer year-round opportunities for our young people. I expect the indoor courts will become the envy of the county and beyond.
Cllr Nigel Pearce, a Lib Dem Ward Member for Suffield Park, said “The commencement of constructing this sports hub will benefit the entire community who wish to use this modern and progressive facility. Being centrally Registered Charity placed within the No. 214779 district – within approximately 30 minutes from the major towns in North Norfolk – this will give all an ample opportunity to become healthier, understand the wellbeing bonus of being 8 ! active, and have the
chance to communicate and relate to others. These long-term benefits are ones which we all should share.
Cllr John Rest, Leader of the Independent Group at NNDC, said “This is an opportunity for NNDC to provide a state-of-the-art facility not just for Cromer but for all of the district.
