Paddle The Channel presents Sheringham RNLI with over £5000

Sunday 7 October saw a successful ending to what became a marathon fundraising campaign for local lads Charlie Graham-Wood and Lewis Gray.

The goal was a simple one : to paddle board from England to France!

The crossing was to run from Dungeness to Boulogne crossing around a 25 mile stretch of the English Channel. Having been plagued by bad conditions for over a year since they came up with the idea, the day finally arrived to handover the obligatory oversized cheque. Having gained international coverage from news bodies and watersports media outlets the challenge gained unprecedented momentum and, having set a target of £2500, the chaps were thrilled to announce the final total of £5130.14.

Paddle The Channel presents Sheringham RNLI with over £5000

The occasion was marked with a feast of a BBQ hosted by the Lifeboat Station with all the crew, families and supporters of the trip coming together to celebrate the successful crossing.

The weather played its part perfectly and the Oddfellows Lifeboat was on display in the sunlight next to one of the paddleboards used to make the crossing.

Charlie and Lewis have since retained the backing of the brands that sponsored the Channel crossing and just recently set out on a paddle that was to take them across the entire width of Scotland, 100km from Fort William to Inverness, across Lochs and canals including the notoriously unpredictable Loch Ness in winds of 50mph.

Of all the questions they’ve received about the adventures, they say the most common question of all is “What’s next?!”

We Will Remember Them

To round up a week of commemorations of the Centenary of the Armistice, there will be a special event at Sheringham Little Theatre on Sunday 18 November from 5pm to 6pm.

The event will consist of information about the First World War, extracts from diaries, from soldiers, nurse and stretcher bearers. It will also include well-known poetry from the trenches, such as In Flanders Field and poetry which was only discovered in a small book, in an attic last year. There will be songs from the era, such as Pack Up Your Troubles In Your Old Kit Bag, and There’s a long, long Trail sung by local singers, Andy Walker and Madeline Hudson, and the audience will be encouraged to join if they would like to. We will include the irrepressible humour that so many soldiers displayed under what must have been terrible situations, as well as the poignant.

This event is to honour all those both at home and abroad, whose dedication and sacrifice we can’t begin to imagine. They fought for our freedom, they were brave beyond telling. So now, to mark the Centenary of the Armistice, WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.

Woodfields' volunteers make all the difference!

Like every charity, Woodfields Den Shop in Sheringham relies on the unerring support of staff and pupils, continued donations and support from the public, but most of all, on its volunteers, without whom this wonderful facility could not function.

A prime example of the difference made by supporters was at the increasingly popular 40s Weekend that takes place annually in Sheringham, Weybourne and Holt, when thousands of both tourists and local people flock to the three centres.

"We are currently looking to add to their numbers to ensure that we can continue to offer our pupils this fantastic experience of life in the outside world and a variety of resources within the school.

Woodfields Den celebrated along with them, opening and fully staffing the shop on both days, making posters, knitting and crocheting items for the fundraising table and dressing up for the occasion.

Matthew Smith, Business Manager at Sheringham Woodfields School is really appreciative of the support the school attracts, saying "Woodfields Den is run by the pupils for the pupils and gives them the opportunity to acquire life skills in a safe environment. All surplus monies raised are reinvested into school funds for extra-curricula activities and resources, and none of this could happen without our dedicated core of volunteers.

Local MP spearheads petition demanding end to second home tax loophole

Norman Lamb MP is asking Norfolk residents to sign a petition calling for an end to a tax loophole that allows second home owners to pay no council tax

This comes after new figures revealed that the tax loophole is costing North Norfolk District Council a staggering £1.8 million this year alone.

Mr Lamb is calling on the Chancellor to end the tax loophole in the Autumn Budget, expected to be announced at the end of October.

In England, any property that is “available to let” for 140 days or more per year can be registered as a holiday business. Holiday homes with a rateable value of less than £12,000 are eligible to receive 100% small business rate relief, meaning that the owners do not have to pay any tax on the property.

North Norfolk District Council revealed that 1,302 second-home holiday lets are claiming 100% small business rate relief in 2018-19 – at a cost of £1,873,998. The figures were disclosed following a freedom of information request from Mr Lamb.

While many of these properties will be genuine holiday homes, the ease of registering a property as a holiday home and claiming full business rate relief leaves the system open to abuse by second-home owners who are seeking to avoid paying council tax.

Mr Lamb said “I think this in an outrageous tax loophole. It is far too easy for second-home owners to bend the rules under the current system. This is particularly galling in a low-wage economy like North Norfolk, where it is critically important that everyone is making a fair contribution. We cannot afford a system that is open to abuse in this way, which is why these rules need reform as a matter of urgency. If you agree, sign the petition demanding that the Chancellor ends this tax loophole in the Budget this autumn.”

Potty Record

On the 7th July the Potty Festival attempted, with the help of thirty-two of the sides attending our weekend of dance, to break the Guinness World Record of 144 dancers all doing the same dance at the same time, set by Stone the Crows in 2012.

After a great deal of organising over several months with form filling in sent from Guinness, and help from our Carnival Committee, came the day and we went for the record. We had 369 dancers all corralled in an arena on the High Street of Sheringham, with video cameras at both ends and Clive our chairman calling the dance. So off they went, dancing Tinner’s Rabbit with the music provided by the musicians of Wicket Brood. The end came just over Tony Chadwick, with the official an exhausting 7 minutes later, and it Guinness certificate. all went as planned. courtesy christaylorphoto.co.uk All we had to do now was send everything (videos and paperwork) off to Guinness for confirmation of the record.

Finally after several long weeks of waiting for news, it arrived on the 17th of September, WE HAD DONE IT !! The Potty Festival is now the holder of the Guinness World Record for the Largest number of Morris Dancers all dancing the same dance at the same time. (Largest Morris Dance).

So it’s a very big “Thank You”, to all the Dancers and Musicians, all our helpers and the Carnival volunteers, without you all we could not have done it.

Firework Fears!

We all know how stressful the firework season can be for our pets so here at Toll Barn Vets we have a few helpful tips to help keep pets as calm as possible. Animals have very sensitive hearing and loud bangs can be painful whilst the flashing lights can be scary. Always keep dogs and cats indoors during fireworks and make sure dogs are walked earlier in the day to avoid being out when fireworks are let off. Many pets go missing at this time of year when they get scared by fireworks so make sure all pets are easily identified with a collar and tag or microchip (with up to date contact details) so that they can be reunited with you if they get scared and manage to run off.

It can help to build your pet a safe den and keep windows, doors and curtains closed to minimise noise as much as possible. Some pets will find it comforting to have an alternative noise so keeping the radio or television on can help to reduce awareness of the sound of fireworks. Pets will often look to you for reassurance during stressful situations so try to act as normally as possible and make sure not to tell pets off if they are behaving in a stressed manner during fireworks. It is also important to reward calm and relaxed behaviour with cuddles and treats! There are also several medicines and techniques which can be used to reduce anxiety around firework season. Pheromone-based and natural calming products come in several varieties including plug-in diffusers, tablets, liquids, collars and sprays. These products can help pets feel more relaxed and calm within the environment and should ideally be started at least 48 hours (preferably longer) before fireworks are due to start. Noise phobia CDs are also available and are designed to gradually reduce sensitivity to loud sounds over a long period of time in the run up to Firework Night.

It’s also important to remember small mammals such as rabbits and guinea pigs as well as birds during this stressful season. These pets can also get easily scared and if possible these pets should be moved into a quiet room or shed. If this is not possible cages should be covered to reduce the sound of the fireworks and turned to face a wall so the firework lights are less visible.

It is essential to ensure enough ventilation still remains underneath the cover.

Make sure pets have enough bedding to burrow and hide in should they feel stressed.

Love for Leo

So far 2018 has been a very good year for fundraising for Love for Leo. Moss and Robina started selling the 60/40 Carnival raffle tickets, issued in January, and thanks to Tesco for allowing the use of the foyer, 400 tickets were sold. A further 23 were sold from the caravan.

The draw which took place on the Sunday before the torchlight procession gave our winner, Mr Roger Mark, the really good sum of £169. On receiving this he then sent a cheque for Love for Leo donating his prize to the funds. Our grateful thanks to Mr Mark as this meant we banked £423.

Of course we have to say a huge thank you again to Tesco as we took part in the blue discs Bags of Help and qualified for £4,000. This would not have been possible without the support of the customers putting their discs in for Love for Leo.

We had a stall at the Mannington Charity Day on 2 September with a tombola, books and other items for sale raising £148. Our big tombola was as usual at the 40s weekend.

This year tombolas were held on the Saturday and Sunday raising £546. We have to thank our friends who give us such good support by

donating prizes, Tesco for three top quality prizes and the Barney family who allow us to use their frontage and tolerate us almost blocking the shop entrance - we get a bit enthusiastic!

Moss has donated fees from his talks and book sales and Robina has tried to keep up with the demand for marmalade and jam. Grateful thanks to Mary and Jo who give us space in their All Natural shop so we are able to sell the preserves.

At the end of 2017 we were delighted to be able to help two little boys.

We gave £1,000 to help to fund a comfortable chair for Christopher, and thanks to the Sheringham Masonic Lodge and the Province, the remaining £1,200 was donated and Christopher was able to use his chair by Christmas.

We donated £1,000 to help with the funding of a wheelchair for Toby.

These items were not available on the NHS. This year donations totalling £1.985 have been made to children in Norfolk. As the fundraising has been successful the area for helping children has been extended to Norfolk and Suffolk. Applications for help for children with cerebral palsy are welcomed. Please contact

Holt & District Probus Club

Members of Holt and District Probus Club enjoyed a substantial lunch of Cottage Pie on 4 October and then were told about Saint Apollonia, the Patron Saint of Dentists.

The entertaining talk by Dr John Beal was titled Medieval Dentistry. John qualified as a dentist and practised for a short while before joining regulation bodies, and ultimately becoming Consultant in Dental Public Health for Yorkshire and the Humber. He has an especial interest in the cult of saints and Saint Apollonia in particular.

Saint Apollonia was a martyr who suffered in Alexandria in the third Century. The practice was to shatter the teeth before executing heretics and that is why she has come to be regarded as the Patron Saint of dentistry.

Dr Beal has made a particular study to find and record images of the saint – and has found paintings on rood screens and stained glass windows, mostly of some antiquity in churches throughout the land, but often in East Anglia.

Fairly local to us, one of the most beautiful pictures of Apollonia is in Barton Turf church, in the heart of the northern Broads.

She gazes out of her portrait, holding the pincers that identify her. This was just one of many illustrations that John projected on the screen.

The Club offers two sets of entrants – novices and advanced.

The novices were considered first and the winner was Clive Matthews with ‘Waiting for the Whistle’ - a monochrome medium close-up picture of steamy machinery including a loco Advanced Winner Iquisitive Shag by Nick whistle. Second was Barrie Price with ‘Trying to Akers Catch Up’: a child on a bike some way behind the presumed parents, travelling through a tunnel. And third came Hanne Siebers with a portrait of a well bearded ‘Norfolk Fisherman’.

There was a bigger entry in the Advanced class, which was won by Nick Akers with a surprising shot ‘Inquisitive Shag’ - a close-up of the bird’s open bill looking down its throat! Michaela Bone’s ‘Smoking Opium’ was second, depicting an ethnic gentleman smoking a pipe with wonderful colour and detail in his face and hat! And third – a mono portrait of a young girl standing in front of a carved wall and titled ‘Precious Heritage’ by Lizzie Wallis.

The special exhibition, Broadland During the First World War, looks at the impact of war on our towns and villages. There is an accompanying film and visitors will be offered the chance to make their own poppies too.

We will be holding a 2 minute silence at 1100 on that Sunday to remember all local people who died in conflict.

Bodham's annual Bonfire and Fireworks display is taking place on Bodham Playing field on Saturday 3 November

The event, which is organised by the Village's Rock Bodham committee, raises money for Rock Bodham charities which include community organisations and local charities. Gates for the event open at 5.45pm and the fire will be lit at 6.45pm with the display taking place at 7pm. Admission to the event is £1 for children, £2 for adults or £5 per family. A BBQ and refreshments will be available.

On Wednesday 7 November a talk by Neil Storey at The Little Theatre will explore the closing year of The First World War, the Armistice of 11 November 1918 and its impact on Norfolk people both on the front line and at home.

numerous First World War centenary projects and author of such books as 'Norfolk in the Great War,' 'Women in the First World War,' The Tommy of the First World War' and 'Animals in the First World War.' The talk will include an overview of the battalions of The Norfolk Regiment in the latter years of the Great War, Norfolk's war hospitals, persistent invasion scares, Zeppelin raiders, the changing roles of women in war, Tank Weeks and legacies of war from veterans groups to War Memorials.

This talk features numerous rare and previously unseen images from Neil's nationally respected archive. If you want to discover more about Norfolk and the centenary of the end of 'the war to end all wars' this lecture is not to be missed.

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society has been particularly keen to commemorate the centenary of the First World War over the last 4 years. The choir will mark the centenary of the Armistice on 11 November 1918 with the Sheringham Armistice Centenary concert in St Peter’s Sheringham on Saturday 10 November 2018 at 7.30 pm. The singers, directed by David Ballard, will be joined by soloists Rosamund Walton (who coincidentally sang the words of Edith Cavell at the 2014 Sheringham Remembrance concert) and Julian Chou-Lambert together with an invited chamber orchestra.

The concert will feature suitable Music for Remembrance including Ralph Vaughan Williams very moving Dona Nobis Pacem which he wrote in 1936 pleading for peace by referring to previous wars during the growing fears of a new one.

The work includes texts from poems by Walt Whitman and from the book of Jeremiah. The programme also includes Gabriel Fauré’s much loved Requiem with its focus on eternal rest and consolation. The choir will also perform a short piece called Christian Soldiers which is from the opening movement of Patrick Hawes’ Great War Symphony which had its world premiere in the Royal Albert Hall on 9 October. This provides a very apt link back to the choir’s 2014 commemorations when the choir commissioned Patrick Hawes to write Eventide – in Memoriam Edith Cavell to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War.

This concert which is part of Sheringham’s overall Armistice Centenary events is performed in collaboration with COAST Arts and promises to be a most memorable commemoration of the Armistice centenary.

CROMER AND SHERINGHAM PROBUS CLUB

On Tuesday 2 October, after an excellent lunch, we were treated to a talk by David Morton, about The Tower of London - a journey through its history up to the present.

He began with a slide showing the 2014 display, in the grassed-over Moat, of nearly 900,000 ceramic poppies, representing British and Commonwealth military fatalities in WW1.

He then showed us a plan of the area known as ‘The Tower’, which in fact covers 18 acres and includes several buildings and the Moat. Over its history it has been a royal residence, the headquarters of the Royal Mint, that of the Treasury, the Public Records Office, an armoury, the site of a menagerie (early 1200s to early 1800s), and is now the home of the Crown Jewels.

Before the 20th century, only seven people had been executed at the Tower but during the two World Wars there were further executions, for treason and spying. However, it has become less sinister since then and in 1974 UNESCO designated it as a ‘place of historic interest’.

In fact, in 2017, 13.1 million people visited it. Much more was described (including the presence of the ravens!) and there were a good number of questions after this excellent talk. David was thanked by our Chairman, Michael Webb.

Another Big Wave at Cromer Pier Coastal harmony is all set to break out at the end of Cromer Pier for the fourth year running.

Sheringham Shantymen crowned their 25th anniversary celebrations in 2015 with a sell-out show “over the border”. Now they’re warming up for another rousing return to the Pavilion Theatre stage on Sunday 4 November.

This time, their tuneful foray under the cloak of darkness will see profits go to Sheringham and Cromer Lifeboats and the Cromer Hospital Charitable Fund, an arrangement hailed by Shantymen’s musical director Brian Farrow

as “another big step towards extracting any lingering sting out of Crab Wars history”.

He hopes the event can inspire fresh bouts of cross-border co-operation and lasting friendship. “There are clear signs that the United Nations peace-keeping force stationed at West Runton in blue sou’westers may soon be redundant. Another grand session of hope and harmony can work wonders”.

“There’s a very thin line between local rivalry and bad-tempered open warfare. As an Honorary Crab for 30 years, I approach such cultural bridge-building fixtures in a completely unbiased frame of mind. I aim to make it run as smoothly as possible – although a few cheap laughs at Sheringham’s expense should settle the nerves” said Skip. “It’s an honour to organise safe passage yet again for the Shantymen at the end of their latest fund-raising round of gigs near and far”.

You may remember that, as a result of a break in at Sheringham RNLI Station, 13-yearold Faith Kenny, a student at Sheringham High School, took it upon herself to make and sell bracelets to help recoup some of the money stolen in the raid. She had a target of £20.

On Sunday 14 October she presented members of the Sheringham Lifeboat Crew with £509.50.

Brian Farrow, Sheringham LOM, said “What a fantastic effort from a young girl who really cares about her local community and the Sheringham RNLI in particular”.

On 9 October St. Andrew's Ladies Association had a really interesting slide show with commentary by Brian Hedge on ‘The 1953 East Coast Floods’.

It brought back many memories to those of us who were around at the time, and made us realise how totally unprepared the East Coast was then for such a great storm surge. Today, thankfully we have defences and would not be taken by surprise.

On Sunday 28 October at 10.30am we will be holding our Annual Ladies Service (gentlemen are welcome too). This year, being the Church's 50th anniversary year, Rev Michaela Youngson, President of the Methodist Conference, has kindly agreed to be our Preacher.

On 13 November we are looking forward to an Open Evening when ‘The Cromer Ukelele Band’ will be entertaining, everybody is welcome.

Charity LPA Scheme Launch LHB Approved

Clapham & Collinge Solicitors are delighted to announce their second ‘Charity Lasting Powers of Attorney Scheme’ taking place throughout November.

As planning for later life professionals, we are keen to raise awareness about the legal and financial implications of dementia and highlight the importance of getting your legal documents in place for peace of mind. Throughout November Clapham & Collinge Solicitors are offering a 25% discount on Lasting Powers of Attorneys.

What is a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)?

A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document which gives someone the authority to act on your behalf when it comes to important decisions, if you become unable to make them yourself. There are two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney:-

• Property and Financial Affairs This document gives your attorney the authority to deal with your property, bank accounts, investments, utility companies and any other finances. This document can be used as soon as it has been registered and regardless of whether you have lost capacity. Your attorney can make decisions on your behalf, provided the decision is in your best interests, for example deciding to sell your property to pay for care fees or change where an investment is held to ensure a higher return.

• Health and Welfare This document gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your day-to-day medical and care needs, your care/ residential home and life sustaining treatment.

This document can only be used once you have lost capacity so if you have not made an LPA by this point, these decisions will be left to the medical professional involved in your care.

This is often a point of contention as your family/friends may have differing opinions to the professionals when it comes to these decisions.

In addition to a 25% discount on Lasting Powers Of Attorneys, Clapham & Collinge Solicitors will also make a £40 donation per Lasting Power of Attorney appointment to support four Norfolk based charities. Our chosen charities are:

New illuminations set to celebrate Norfolk landscape

For seven nights this November, spectacular light installations will highlight Repton’s views in the landscape, enabling visitors to experience Sheringham Park in an entirely new light.

Malcolm Fisher, the National Trust’s Visitor Experience Manager at Sheringham Park said; “It’s fitting in the bicentenary year of Repton’s death, his work is celebrated for all to enjoy. Repton Revealed is a new addition to our 2018 programme and one that we hope will be a highlight for many. It will not only showcase the beauty of the natural landscape, but the work of art that it has become.”

The National Trust has been working with an international team of artists including Richard Milner and Tundra, to create this site specific lighting installation in Repton’s home county. As visitors walk the mile long route, Repton’s story will be brought to light. And just as Repton designed his landscapes, the installations will build to a big reveal, befitting to what Repton himself described as his ‘most favourite work’.

Repton delivered his vision for Sheringham Park in 1812, in one of his famous red leather books, of which only 200 survive. In that book he wrote ‘Sheringham possesses more natural beauty and local advantages than any other place I have ever seen’.

Repton’s designs were left for others to oversee, adapt or ignore, and so it’s not surprising that they sometimes turned out rather differently to the way he imagined. However, at Sheringham Park, the parkland is still essentially his work. The National Trust continue to manage the landscape to the vision he set out, a natural landscape of trees, lush flowers, and carefully planned vistas that take in some of the most beautiful landscape in Norfolk.

This little hoglet came into care on 12 September. With his eyes open and teeth through, he was approximately four weeks old.

The poor little boy was found nudging his deceased mother who unfortunately had been killed by another animal.

With the time for hibernation approaching, at only 90 gms even with his mother, it would be unlikely that he would have survived, He is doing well and will be with me over winter.

Bonfire night is fast approaching - a nice big pile of wood makes an excellent home for a family of hedgehogs, so please, before lighting your bonfire, check underneath for any animals nesting there. Thank you.

On Tuesday 30 October we are presenting a cheque to a representative of the British Heart Foundation’s Sheringham Branch as a result of last year’s fundraising for the President’s chosen charity.

We are also giving the sum of £150 to Amanda Veal of ‘Little Star’. Amanda, with help from anyone who joins her at Holt Community Centre, recycles wedding dresses into Angel Gowns for the parents of stillborn or early death babies. They also knit blankets and clothing.

Having been through a very hard time in her life, Amanda provides companionship and activities to others. This money will help to provide necessary sewing equipment and materials.

Members of the public are welcome to join us on the evening of 30 October at The Morley Club, Sheringham at 7.30 pm. Nibbles will be provided.

National Trust Associations

There are National Trust Associations all over the country but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s surprising how many people have never heard of them! So, what are they? They are basically voluntary groups who raise money for the National Trust whilst enjoying themselves.

We have a very active association in North Norfolk - the North Norfolk Association of the National Trust (NNA) - and you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to be an NT member to join. We meet once a month for social activities such as our afternoon â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;tea and talkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; meetings held at the Links Hotel, West Runton and during the summer months we arrange day trips. We also offer members short holidays.

Recent talks have included â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Escaping Hitler, from refugee to Sheriff of Norwichâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Musicals based on Shakespeareâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s playsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Restoration work at Oxburgh Hallâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;How many times was America discovered before Columbus?â&#x20AC;&#x2122;

This summer we had a guided walk around Heigham Holmes, a visit to Clifton House in Kings Lynn and a trip to Oxburgh Hall. We also had a very successful holiday in the Manchester/Liverpool area.

Our Association exists not only to raise money for the National Trust but also to offer members the opportunity to meet like-minded people at interesting events and to make new friends.

Annual membership is ÂŁ8 for individuals and ÂŁ12 for couples. The cost for each event varies depending on the nature of the event. Members also receive three newsletters a year.

Gradings for Students at Holt Taekwondo School

Holt Taekwondo School, which is part of North Norfolk Taekwondo Academy, recently held a grading at Holt Youth Centre.

Traditional Forms, Blocks, Punches and Kicks were assessed and an impressive display of aerial kicks was seen.

All of the students who took the grading passed at a high standard and Master Richard Cox commented on the dedication shown by all of the students.
