Decision to grant planning permission for £10.7 million Sheringham Leisure Centre Major step forward for replacement leisure centre project

North Norfolk District Council’s ambitious plans to build a multi-million pound, state of the art leisure facility in Sheringham have been given the go-ahead.

A decision to grant planning permission has been made for the £10.7m project, which will replace the existing facility, Splash, with the first stage of building work expected to begin this month. The new centre will include a six-lane, 25-metre pool, a 13-metre learner pool with an

adjustable depth floor, fitness suite, community rooms, multi-purpose studios, a spin studio and a café. The design has been progressed with the facility’s accessibility in mind and incorporates eleven dedicated accessible car parking spaces close to the building entrance, level access into the building through the main reception, automatic entry doors within the lobby area and accessible changing rooms. Decision to grant planning permission for £10.7 million Sheringham Leisure Centre

Continued from front cover... A moving floor on the smaller pool will allow the water depth to be changed for different activities and user groups such as swimming lessons, water confidence and toddler sessions and aqua fit exercise classes.

A colourful splash pad and learner pool for children to enjoy and where they can improve their confidence in the water has also been included in the design, and a range of portable, fun equipment such as inflatables will be offered during timetabled sessions.

The project, which supports North Norfolk District Council’s commitment to improving the health and well-being of its residents, will ensure the provision of leisure and fitness facilities for local communities and visitors to North Norfolk is secured for the future. Splash will remain open while the new leisure centre is built on a different part of the site. The new leisure centre is due to open in late 2020.

Working with partners including Sport England, the Council is seeking to increase participation in sport which will contribute to an improvement in social and cultural benefits. The social and fitness spaces will help put the facility at the heart of the community.

The construction of a new facility will result in significant economic benefits both during and post completion. These include job creation for local people during the construction period and longer term employment and opportunities for volunteering once the site has opened for business.

North Norfolk District Council has appointed Saunders Boston Architects and a full design team to develop the new facility, which is also the subject of a funding bid to Sport England.

Sheringham’s skate park, ‘The Strip’, will be relocated on the site, and will be rebuilt to a design that has been chosen by users of the facility. Construction is expected to start in late November and will run through to early 2019.

Another Fireworks Success at The Lighthouse

Despite a very wet day on the Thursday, the weather was perfect for Friday evening’s fireworks at The Lighthouse Inn in Walcott.

Always a spectacular display, this year was no exception.

This year’s theme was the centenary of the end of World War 1 and included a roll of honour of all those lost from Walcott in both wars.

Second display

The Mayor of Sheringham, Madeleine Ashcroft, accompanied by Cllr Hazel Beazley and District Cllr Brian Hannah, were joined by youngsters and their parents from Sheringham to scatter Flanders Poppy seeds across a stretch of the Common which had been cleared by Russell Cox for our use.

Keep a look out next spring when the poppies will show through the grass in remembrance of all the service personnel who gave their lives that we may be free here in Sheringham.

NENBC meeting with Mike Dawson and friends 'Champions of the Flyway' on 29 November 7.30pm – 9.30pm at Aylmerton Village Hall, NR11 8PX. Mike says 'having watched other people having fun racing around the deserts of Southern Israel for the last four years, a group of us thought we ought to have a go at raising some money for conservation and get a few lifers into the bargain. This is the story of what it's about, what we saw and what we hope to do in 2019'. Come and enjoy a 'winners' tale.

Please park along Church Road or in the overflow car park at the church. Please ensure that local residents can still access their driveways and there is sufficient clearance for agricultural vehicles to use the road. A torch might also be helpful, as the village has no street lighting. To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing. Felbrigg Park: mid-week walk 9 December 9am-11am this walk caters for all levels of ability. We will take a leisurely walk around the Park & Lake, route dependent on the local bird and other wildlife likely to be present on the day. Please wear clothing appropriate to the weather - footpaths in Felbrigg can be muddy at any time of the year. Meet at Sexton's Lodge car park, off Lion's Mouth, NR11 8PS at the western end of the estate. To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing. As usual, children are welcome if accompanied by well-behaved adults, but we regret no dogs.

We Did It!

On behalf of Erpingham Festival of Crafts we would like to thank all those who took part in our craft fair this year; the crafters, those who gave up their time to help & all those who attended.

We also need to thank some of the traders in the region who donated 6

prizes for our raffle including Corner House in West Runton and Upstairs Downstairs in Cromer. Our charity this year was The Priscilla Bacon Lodge Support Group.

We reached our goal and raised over £1,000.

Thank you all so much.

Sheringham Lifeboat Station

World War 1 Remembrance Service

On 11 November 1918 fighting in World War I came to an end following the signing of an armistice between the Allies and Germany which called for a ceasefire effective at 11am.

It is recognised as one of the deadliest conflicts in the history of the human race, in which over 16 million people died.

Lifeboat Operations Manager (LOM) Brian Farrow explained that Sheringham Lifeboat Station organised a special launch of the Lifeboat in order that they could pay their own tribute to the 75 local men from Sheringham, Upper Sheringham and Beeston Regis who were killed in World War One,

He said that as a community, the crew here at Sheringham Lifeboat Station are made up from volunteers within our wider community. That has always been the case since the first private Lifeboat ‘The Augusta’ was stationed here in 1838.

During WW1 there were two lifeboats operating from Sheringham; the private lifeboat the Henry Ramey Upcher, still housed in Sheringham, and RNLI lifeboat J C Madge, now restored and housed in the Mo museum. Many of the family names carved on the war memorial are echoed in the names of the volunteers manning those Lifeboats.

They were all an integral part of the same community and here in our short service today we wish to recognise their ultimate contribution to our freedom.

The service began by LOM Brian J Farrow explaining the wish of the station to pay their own tribute to those who lost their lives and he asked Major Janet Bishop to offer prayers to mark the occasion. The lifeboat was launched by tractor driver Kev Mann with Senior Helmsman David Hagan helming the boat and helmsmen Tony Webster, Chris Taylor and Steve Banks as crew. Deputy Launching Authority (DLA) Clive Rayment explained the launching procedure to the watching public as the boat came to anchor about 100 metres offshore where a fresh flower wreath was cast into the sea.

Major Janet Bishop offered a prayer to mark the event and asked crewman Ret’d Warrant Officer Stephen Roberts to read the Exhortation. At this point bugler Richard Fletcher played the last post which was followed by two minutes silence. Meanwhile the lifeboat cruised slowly 400 metres offshore and when the reveille was played fired a white para-flare. Crewman Sgt Andy Trend then spoke to Kohima Epitaph and Major Janet Bishop said a departing prayer to end the

A BUSY AFTERNOON FOR WEYBOURNE WI

ceremony.

This short but special occasion was witnessed, on a calm sunny morning, by a very appreciative audience from the local community.

To end the occasion, Mick and Sheila Holford ably assisted by Anne Little served endless cups of tea and coffee to an appreciative public.

On 7 November, members of Weybourne WI met at the village hall for the AGM. The meeting began with the singing of ‘Jerusalem’, before routine business items were discussed.

It was then time for the AGM, which started with reports from the Treasurer, Secretary and retiring President, Kath Griffiths.

Coral Batchelor, WI Advisor, was in attendance, to oversee the election of nine committee members. Celia Howe was duly elected as the new President.

Celia Dalton gave a speech thanking Kath for the nine years she has spent on the committee (six as President) and presented her with a basket of plants and gift vouchers from members.

Paul Hooper, a volunteer from the Wind Energy Museum at Thurne, then entertained us with a talk and slide show. He explained that the mission of the museum is to preserve the history of wind energy.

His slides showed a variety of wind pumps, but his main focus was the River Thurne Windmill, which is owned and maintained by the museum.

It was fascinating to learn the history of the windmill, which was working from 1820-1936, until it fell into disrepair. In 1948, it was bought for £75 by Bob Morse to save it being dismantled for scrap. Within a year the mill had been renovated. At that time it cost £7 to repaint, including labour. Repainting today costs £10,000!

Eventually, the mill fell into disrepair again, but since being owned by the museum it has been restored to working order again.

Paul finished his talk by describing the folklore that surrounds some Norfolk windmills. A vote of thanks was given by Susan Lee.

Thurne Mill and the Wind Energy Museum are both open to visitors. For further information check the website windenergymuseum.wordpress.com Sheringham Independent 500

30 Year Anniversary at Heads Ahead

Heads Ahead on Beech Avenue in Sunway Park, Sheringham is celebrating 30 years of hairdressing in Sheringham this month.

Proprietor Chris Tooke has over 46 years’ experience in hairdressing, having trained at Andre Bernard in Bury St Edmunds and worked at salons in Bury before moving to Sheringham when her daughters Lizzie and Emily were both young.

Having very much grown up with hairdressing, it was no surprise when Lizzie decided to follow in her mum’s footsteps and she now works alongside Chris at the salon. Indeed both Emily and grandson Ryan also both help out when the salon is busy – a real family affair!

The salon also boasts a nail bar in addition to a full range of hairdressing services.

Call Steve on 01263 511626 www.cromergaragedoors.co.uk

In her time in Sheringham, Chris has been pleased to train up several youngsters who are now fully qualified hairdressers themselves, and she likes to keep in touch with her protégés.

Mandy, Sandra, Chris, Victoria, Lizzie

Chris would like to thank all her loyal staff, past and present, and everybody who has helped her over the years.

And also of course her grateful thanks to all her customers without whom the 30 year anniversary would not be happening!

FAQs and Top Tips for First Time Buyers

Gaynor Smith . Property Solicitor . Clapham & Collinge Solicitors

Conveyancing transactions can be particularly complicated and confusing, especially for first time buyers. However, we believe that buying a home for the first time should be more exciting than stressful. This is why our team offer the very best straightforward, friendly service and will guide you through the entire process to make sure your transaction goes through as smoothly and as quickly as possible. We hope that these frequently asked questions, that first time buyers are so often seeking the answers to, will provide you with the basics to put you at ease throughout the transaction.

Q. What are the steps of the conveyancing process for buying a property? A Conveyancer should be instructed on acceptance of the Buyer’s offer. The Buyer arranges a survey on the property, and makes an application for a mortgage (if required). The Buyer’s Conveyancer confirms instructions by letter, setting out the terms of business and fixed fee costs. They will contact the seller’s Conveyancer to obtain the contract pack. Once received, they will raise pre-contract enquiries, carry out the necessary searches and obtain a copy of the mortgage offer. The Sellers’s Conveyancer and seller answer pre-contract enquiries and return these to buyer’s Conveyancer, who will then review and reports to the buyer on the contents of the contract pack, pre-contract enquiries, the result of the searches and mortgage

Sheringham Independent 500

offer. The buyer then considers this report and raises questions on anything they feel is unclear. When the buyer is happy to proceed, arrangements are made for contracts to be formally “exchanged”, legally committing both parties to the transaction. Upon exchange a completion date is agreed and this is the date that the balance of purchase monies will be sent to the seller’s solicitor and the buyer gets the keys.

Q. How does a Solicitor or Conveyancer make the buying process easier for clients? Picking the right legal advisor for you can make a huge difference, after all you are going to be dealing with each other a lot over the coming weeks. The right Solicitor or Conveyancer will guide you through the process step-by-step and advise you as to any potential issues that may arise as well as how these can be resolved.

Q. What can first time buyers do to make the conveyancing process run more smoothly?

There are a few things that buyers can do to help the process along:-

1. Prepare your finances If you need a mortgage to purchase your first home, we would recommend obtaining a mortgage in principle before putting in any offers. This way you will know how much you are eligible to borrow. You should look closely at the quotation provided by your legal advisor so you know exactly how much you need in total to purchase the property, including Stamp Duty Land Tax and Land Registration Fees. There are bound to be times during the process when you’ll feel like there are constant demands for your cash. Be prepared that there will be lots of fees to pay for and you’ll need

November 24th 2018

to have money available.

2. Fill in forms and other requests for information promptly and accurately The quicker you can respond to requests for information, the quicker your legal advisor will be able to move on to the next stage of the process. There are numerous formalities your legal advisor will have to follow, they will only ask you for information that is absolutely necessary.

3. Stay on top of the process There are a lot of elements that need to come together in the house-buying process and it can be easy to lose track of where you're up to. Keeping good communication going with your legal advisor and estate agents will help you stay on top of what can be a long and confusing process. If you have concerns do not stay silent, it is important to raise these with your legal advisor at the earliest opportunity. Q. What additional tips would you give to first time buyers about to step onto the property ladder? The biggest tip that we can give a first time buyer is to instruct a legal advisor they trust. As a first time buyer it is all new and potentially daunting, but the right Conveyancer will take the time to guide them through each step of the process. Your Conveyancer is also crucial when it comes to speeding up the process, flagging up potential problems and dealing with them quickly too.

If you are looking to buy or sell your home, the Clapham & Collinge Client Relations team are on hand to provide you with a no obligation quote. Call today on 01692 660230 for our North Walsham office or 01263 823398 for our Sheringham office.

National Trust launches fundraising appeal to secure the future of Prejudice and Emma. Blickling’s nationally important library

An ambitious new conservation project to secure the long-term future of one of the most significant book collections in the country has been launched by the National Trust, and with it a fundraising appeal to support the work that’s needed.

The £325,000 building project will see vital work get underway at Norfolk’s Blickling Estate, as part of a larger five year project to not only save the library, but bring it to life for visitors. The hall is home to one of the most significant country house libraries in England, with more than 12,500 volumes making up the largest and oldest book collection in the conservation charity’s care.

As part of ongoing conservation work a number of risks to the books have been identified, including from mould and death watch beetle. The conservation project will see work take place that will ensure the library is fit for the future.

Paul Coleman, the National Trust’s Project Manager, said “Historic buildings like Blickling bring multiple challenges with them over time and need continual care for the precious collections they hold, and the work we need to do in the library is about

the long-term future of the books here.”

“It’s not unusual for issues such as leaks or pest damage to appear in places like this, but without this essential work to stop them in their tracks, the potential damage to the collection would be irreversible. We know that a visit to the library is the highlight for many visitors to Blickling, so we’re confident that together we can take it into the next stage of its long history.”

Work on the project is due to start in January. As well as repairing leaks, the conservation work will include creating the right environmental conditions for temperature and humidity that the Could you collection needs.

The collection includes the oldest book cared for by the National Trust - the first Complete Bible to be printed in English – as well as first editions of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, Pride and

He said: “The library here at Blickling is absolutely magnificent – from medieval manuscripts all the way through to Jane Austen first editions. North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

ÂŁ1814.04 raised at our Christmas Sale on 10 November.

Many thanks to our volunteers for manning the stalls on the day and to all our cat loving friends for coming and supporting us

Kittens, Mango and Misha have recently gone to their new home and someone is very interested in giving Flossy a new home, although not immediately. Grace, the little stray mentioned last time, is now looking so much better. She is no longer receiving four portions of fish plus the special biscuits for tummy upsets per day, as the fish has now been replaced by fresh chicken. Stephanie will gradually introduce other cat food into her diet but it is important at this stage to do this gradually. She is a little sweetheart and just loves lots of fuss and cuddles. Once she is fully fit, she will be put up for adoption.

Stephanie has recently received several calls relating to stray cats. However, until we can be sure the cat is indeed a stray and not someone’s much loved pet, we cannot put them on the waiting list to come into care. Cats do tend to visit houses close to their homes, especially if their owners are out during the day. They will beg for food even if they have recently been fed so, unless they are in very poor condition, it is best not to feed them. If possible, take them to the vets to see if they have been microchipped and, if not, we or the vets can supply you with paper collars to try and identify whether or not they have a home. Even those that look in poor condition may have a home and could be receiving treatment or be on a special diet. This is often the case with older cats, who could have diabetes or thyroid problems and are often quite thin with dull coats. Again, if possible, get the cat to the vets to be checked for a microchip. Once it has been established that the cat is a stray we can put it on our waiting list for when a pen becomes free.

I recently received a phone call from one of our volunteers who had been informed that a cat had been hit by a car and, although still alive, it was not looking good.

Although a Sunday night I advised them to ring Westover and they were able to take the cat to the surgery where the vet was waiting to see what could be done. Sadly, the poor cat died but the vets were able to keep it in case an owner turned up. This is the second emergency recently when we have had to contact Westover out of hours, the last time being a Saturday afternoon and, again, the vet was there ready to do what was necessary. It is good to know that there is someone there whenever they are needed.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 Romeo, a nice friendly 256948 it (to see if you are eligible for a cat, no longer looking for voucher). This number is for vouchers only romance, just a lovely new and will not be able to help with any other home enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

Hedgehog Haven

Normally you don't interfere with a nest with hoglets but when I had a telephone call three weeks ago about a nest, I made the decision to collect and bring them into care.

Because it is so late in the year, the hoglets would not weigh enough to survive outside. What a good mum! There are five hoglets who now weigh approximately 200 gms each, so I have now separated them from mum and she is having a well-earned rest in an outside hut and the hoglets are housed inside, three in one hut and two in another.

Sheringham Remembers … The Sheringham World War One Centenary Commemoration and Remembrance Project, which was instigated by Sheringham Town Council, sought to pay tribute to those from the communities of Sheringham, Beeston Regis and Upper Sheringham, who gave their lives in World War One. The project also wanted to acknowledge the contributions made across the whole community, as so many responded to the impact the conflict had on the town. The ensuing programme of events which were organised across the community throughout November, but especially over the Remembrance weekend (10 and 11 November), exceededall expectations.

These events included talks, film screenings, exhibitions, concerts an ‘Off to War – Be home for Christmas’ steam send-off, and a ‘Battle’s Over’ beacon-lighting’. There were also special services and events in

community venues, as well as the usual remembrance events, parades and ervices, which were particularly well attended this year. On Monday 12 November, Sheringham Community Primary School packed St Peter’s Church, for a service conducted by Rev. Christian Heycocks and Tim Groves from Sheringham Museum. The service included one of the most poignant reminders of the huge cost paid in lives lost and the impact on the community. With the children from Years One through to Six sitting cross-legged on the floor, one by one a boy or a girl stood up and read out one of the names of those on the Sheringham War Memorial, who paid the ultimate price in their service to King and Country. It was impossible not to be moved by this very harrowing visualisation, as that number of children stood among their seated companions. The most lasting legacy of the project is the book ‘Sheringham at War – 100 years on. Priced at £5.99, it is a richly illustrated guide and a fitting tribute to the sacrifices made by our community 100 years ago. Featuring exclusive images from the archives of Sheringham Museum and local collectors, this limited edition, 80-page is available at various outlets in the town, including NNorfolk Railway and Tesco.

Thanks are due to so many who contributed to the success of the project in focusing our thoughts on the sacrifices made by so many of our community one hundred years ago.

Government considering closing ‘holiday homes’ tax loophole 100% small business rate relief in 2018-19 – at following Norfolk MP’s efforts

The Government has announced a consultation on business rates treatment for holiday homes after Norman Lamb MP and local Liberal Democrats highlighted a loophole which allows homeowners to avoid paying tax on second homes.

Following a freedom of information request this summer, Mr Lamb, the MP for North Norfolk, discovered the loophole is costing Norfolk councils a staggering ÂŁ1.8 million in 2018 alone.

Mr Lamb and local Liberal Democrats have been campaigning for the Chancellor to close the loophole, and a petition by Mr Lamb on the issue was signed by 1,769 people.

Now the Government has announced a

consultation on the criteria under which holiday homes become chargeable to business rates rather than council tax, citing a concern that some owners of properties that are not genuine businesses may seek to reduce their tax liability by falsely declaring that the property is available to let.

In England, any property that is “available to letâ€? for 140 days or more per year can be registered as a holiday business. Holiday homes with a rateable value of less than ÂŁ12,000 are eligible to receive 100% small business rate relief, meaning that the owners do not have to pay any tax on the property.

North Norfolk District Council revealed that 1,302 second-home holiday lets are claiming

a cost of ÂŁ1,873,998.

Mr Lamb said “It is encouraging that the Government has listened to concerns raised about this unfair loophole. Hard-pressed residents in North Norfolk are paying higher council tax bills to fund vital local services, while some owners of second homes that are registered as holiday lets are getting away with paying no tax at all on that property. All the while, this loophole is costing councils a staggering sum of money which could be spent on care for elderly people, children’s services or housing for local people.

“I hope the consultation will be delivered without the delay, and I will be writing to the Chancellor to ensure that is the case.

The Sights and Sounds of the Sixties Returns to Cromer Pier

Cromer Pier is delighted to announce a planned return to the Sixties in 2019.

Dalek and Cyberman from Doctor Who, the return of the rollback ÂŁ1 a pint (while stocks last) and lots more exciting projects in the pipeline. The arrival of hundreds of mopeds caused quite a stir in 2017 and we are expecting their return alongside other classic vehicles from the era which is sure to create a real air of nostalgia.

After the success of the sixties festival in 2017 and following significant customer demand the pier, working with Nigel Pearce as co-producer will re-instate the day and plan to both develop it into an annual event and a weekend festival over time for it to become a firm fixture in Cromer’s diverse entertainment calendar.

The 2019 Festival will take place on Saturday 30 March 2019 so be sure to mark the date in your diary.

Local Cromer Soul Club vintage vinyl DJ’s Piers ‘Hitman Hawkins’ and Trevor Half Nelson will spin the discs and open the event on Friday evening 29 March in the Pavilion Theatre Bar with a ticketed authentic sixties music event, so it’s time to get planning your knock ‘em’ dead sixties outfit now.

The main event on Saturday 30 March is a day-long celebration embracing all things sixties on the pier and promenade. Already confirmed, live music courtesy of Rock the Lobster, original sixties Pirate Radio Legends sharing stories and their experiences, vintage sixties stalls, dance displays, sixties memorabilia including an original full size

In the theatre on Saturday evening a version of All or Nothing, the mod musical experience written especially for the event by producer Carol Harrison, celebrates the unique sound of this iconic era starring the brilliant multi-talented West End cast, an authentic Modtastic evening of fun and live entertainment.

Iconic Hollywood and rock n roll heart throb Elvis Presley dominated the era, so if you think you have what it takes, rumour has it a prize may be on offer for the best dressed Elvis.

Friends of Cromer Museum

This year it is 250 years since the circus became accepted as an entertainment and art form in its own right so it was fitting that the first of this winter’s talks given by Gareth Davies and organised by the Friends of Cromer Museum dealt with the life of Pablo Fanque, one of the early pioneers of the circus.

His life and times as a circus performer and proprietor shed light not only on Pablo Fanque’s remarkable life but also on the social attitudes of Victorian England.

Fanque’s real name was William Darby and he was born in 1810 in St. Andrews’ Workhouse in Norwich. He was of mixed race and although Norwich was regarded as a relatively liberal city for the time non-whites still had a hard time. It was when he was apprenticed to William Batty, Pablo Fanque a well-known circus owner, that Fanque developed the skills in tumbling, acrobatics and, particularly, equestrianism that were to play a key part in his life as

Celebrated England international is guest at Holt dinner

Holt Rugby’s annual dinner was held at Bridge Road on 1st November. The event continues to grow in popularity with 186 members and guests in attendance this year. Roger Dakin was the master of ceremonies and once again a giant sugar beet was auctioned for club funds.

Guest speaker was the legendary England propforward Jeff Probyn – he was capped 37 times and always regarded one of the toughest Ben Jones, Holt RFC Chair: Andrew Ross, scrummagers in organiser of the dinner; Guest of Honour the game. performer and circus owner. Norwich had its own circus building called the Parthenon or Rotunda which was on the site of what became the The type of equestrian skill for which Victoria Pablo was famous Station in later years. By 1840 equestrianism was the mainstay of the circus and in late 1841 Fanque left William Batty’s circus and set up his own show. He had financial support from William Bullard the brewer and the first performance of Fanque’s own circus was given in February 1842.

Fanque’s career lasted until his death in May 1871 and had a number of ups and downs. His circus was very popular in the north of England but his life was not without tragedy. In August 1848 his wife was killed when a stand holding 600 spectators collapsed onto the box office where she was working. Circuses were often criticised for encouraging rowdy behaviour and the use of child performers was caught up in the midVictorian campaigns to protect children at work to the extent that in 1878 the Children’s Dangerous Performers Act allowed fines to be levied if children were put at risk. Competition from well-resourced American circuses, especially with their use of exotic animals, put pressure on Fanque and other owners of small circuses and when he died in Stockport in May 1871 he was insolvent and living in poverty. Pablo Fanque’s contribution to multiculturalism lives on - from the name check he gets in the Beatles’ song ‘For the Benefit of Mr Kite’ to attempts today to present him as an early example of black entrepreneurship.

Review of Polling Districts and Places

A consultation on changes to some voting arrangements in North Norfolk has opened and will run until the end of the year

The locations of some polling district boundaries and some polling places in North Norfolk could change as part of a regular review which assesses the suitability of where people vote in elections.

But before those suggested changes can come into force, a public consultation led by North Norfolk District Council is being held to ask people what they think and whether they have comments or suggestions.

A separate process led by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England decided in 2017 that from the next

As part of the new Review of Polling Districts and Places, the vast majority (114 out of 138) of polling districts, places and stations in the District are not identified for any change.

Of the remaining 24 polling districts, some changes are proposed, summarised as follows:

Each local authority area is divided into polling districts, with one or more polling districts making up a district ward. A polling place is an area or building within a polling district in which a polling station is situated.

North Norfolk District Council elections in May 2019, there would be 40 councillors representing North Norfolk across 32 wards instead of 48 councillors across 34 wards.

• 8 propose no change to the polling district or polling place, but make alternative proposals for the polling station based on a range of factors including accessibility, more suitable new building, or cost

• 10 propose minor changes to polling district boundaries (all in towns to reflect new district and parish ward boundaries) but with no changes to the location of polling stations for the majority of electors in those areas

• 6 propose changes to polling district boundaries (all in towns to reflect the new district and parish ward boundaries) and alternative locations for polling stations based

on a combination of the new ward boundaries, accessibility and more suitable buildings.

All of the relevant information about proposed changes and how you can take part in the consultation can be found at www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/ polling-station-review. Those without internet access can call Electoral Services Officer Robert Henry on 01263 516327. The deadline for consultation responses is 31 December 2018.

Magical Powers

If I had some magical powers. I’d patrol the skies high above. Anyone throwing their litter about, Would be slapped by a magical glove! Flytippers would feel the heat of my wrath, I’d burn all the tyres on their trucks. Then ‘teach’ them to safely recycle their waste. Education - that is the crux! Woe betide those who blight this fair land, For it is completely unique. All those too lazy to go to the dump I’d glue rubbish to them for a week! If I had some magical powers, I would change so many things. I’d make people aware of how lucky they are, And make them count all their blessings! Frances Wraight

Holt and District Probus Club East Anglian Air Ambulance

After a nourishing meal at The Feathers in Holt, members of Holt and District Probus Club settled down to see an interesting set of photographs from the First World War.

The occasion being, of course, the closest meeting date of the Club to the 100th anniversary of the 1918 armistice.

Member Ray Morgan had collected a number of contemporary photos and introduced them with a light and entertaining touch, though not glossing over the horror of the subject matter.

mark 100th anniversary of Armistice Day by flying the poppy over the region

Earlier this month East Anglian Air Ambulance helicopters – Anglia One and Anglia Two - flew the poppy over the region to pay homage to all those who suffered or lost their lives at war.

The poppy decals were placed on the door of the charity’s two H145 helicopters as a mark of respect and to commemorate the contribution of military and civilian service men and women who sacrificed so much for us. Both helicopters were on task over the Remembrance Day weekend.

There were pictures of men going to war, some of some of them coming back, together with one of those strange lozenge Just one of the photos shown by shaped early tanks. The photographs were derived from a number of sources, but Ray said he was especially indebted to Greshams School who had been very helpful.

A poignant reminder of the reason why we were all wearing our poppies!

Meetings of Holt and District Probus Club are normally held at lunchtime on the first Thursday of each month at the Feathers in Holt. Enquiries about membership (or about a trial visit - visitors are most welcome) should be made to Secretary Alan Holmes on 01263 710782.

The initiative was brought in by the charity’s aviation partners Babcock UK Onshore, who kindly provided the poppies to their customers.

You can follow EAAA on their Facebook page ‘East Anglian Air Ambulance’ and on Twitter as @EastAngliAirAmb. If you’d like to find out more about the charity or how you get involved go to their website www.eaaa.org.uk.

Calling all Norfolk artists …

Be part of Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios 2019 Applications are now open for artists from across Norfolk to take part in one of the most successful Open Studios schemes in the country.

Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios will be celebrating its 25th year in 2019 and will run from Saturday 25 May to Sunday 9 June.

selling work directly from the artist, which of course is one of the appeals, but it also offers artists the chance to meet and talk with people who are interested in their work. Many artists also enjoy being able to meet and work with other artists, which for some has resulted in long-term collaborations and friendships.

Each year hundreds of artists take part in the scheme, inviting the public into their studios to reveal how and where they work.

The event annually attracts thousands of visitors and in 2018 more than 36,000 people flocked to studios across Norfolk.

Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios enables artists to promote and sell their work directly to visitors who can see artwork as it happens in the studio.

During Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios 2018, 460 artists participated across 256 venues - along with 16 Norfolk schools. Throughout the county artists came together to create fifteen Art Trails, allowing visitors to enjoy several studios in one day. Art demonstrations, private views, workshops and talks also make up this key event.

Ros Dixon, Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios Administrator, said “It’s wonderful to think that Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios will be in its 25th year in 2019. It goes to show that the scheme has a timeless appeal for both artists and visitors. It’s not just about buying and

Will Teather in his studio at Muspole Workshops

Being able to see artists at work in unique working spaces will continue to fascinate and appeal to people, whether the artist has been taking part in Open Studios for 25 years or whether it’s their first time.”

Internationally renowned artists as well as artists new to the scheme take part each year and for many, taking part is not just about selling artwork.

Artists also take part in the scheme to join a wider community of artists which helps to bring their work to new and diverse audiences, opening up discussions about their practice. North Norfolk artist Amelia Mills, who took part in Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios for

the first time this year, said “I've met some wonderful people - other local artists included. Lots of new and old faces and plenty of sales, which was great.”

Sarah Ballard, curator at Barrington Farm, said “We have taken part in Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios every year since 1994. It is an important and much anticipated event in our year as it gives each of our artists the opportunity to display their work, to meet the general public, talk about their work and possibly make a sale. It is great for us to be involved, as we can invite friends, family and colleagues to the exhibitions and build on existing relationships with our community.”

Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios 2019 will take place between Saturday 25 May and Sunday 9 June 2019. Artists wanting to take part can apply online at nnopenstudios.org.uk. The cost for inclusion in the scheme is £110 for individual artists, £300 for groups of artists and £110 for schools. This includes a listing in the Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios brochure with a print run of 35,000.

Artists will also receive a listing on the Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios website, as well as posters and postcards to publicise their involvement. They will have the opportunity to take part in the high profile Central Taster Exhibition at The Forum in Norwich in April 2019, one of the largest annual art exhibitions held at the venue.

Applications open on Friday 26 October and close on Friday 7 December 2018.

For more information please visit www.nnopenstudios.org.uk, or email nnopenstudios@nnfestival.org.uk or call Ros Dixon on 01603 877762.
