Help East Anglian Air Ambulance keep families together this Christmas East Anglian Air Ambulance launched their ‘Together This Christmas’ campaign last month. After saving the life of three-year-old Annabel earlier in the year, the charity has asked people to consider giving a little extra over the festive period to bring more patients like Annabel home to their families for Christmas.

On 9 February 2018 EAAA’s Anglia Two crew was tasked at 09.49 to a three-year-old girl named Annabel, who had sadly suffered a cardiac arrest at her pre-school. Pilots Olly Gates and Gav Blake flew the team of Dr Victor Inyang, Dr Jon Barratt and Critical Care Paramedic Chris Neil directly to her side, arriving just 17 minutes after receiving the call. Despite a successful resuscitation by the fantastic preschool team, Annabel was deeply unconscious and her airway was compromised. The team gave her a general Count down to 2019 with friends & family anaesthetic in order to protect 6 Course dinner and live entertainment at her airway and breathing. Help East Anglian Air Ambulance keep families together this Christmas

It is incredibly rare to anaesthetise a young child outside of a hospital so the team carefully modified drug dosages based on her age and weight.Specialist paediatric airway equipment was prepared and checked. It took the team just sixteen minutes to complete the process. After gaining control of Annabel’s airway the crew made the decision to fly her to Addenbrooke’s. En route to hospital the team worked hard to stabilise her, but on the latter half of the journey Annabel deteriorated further and required intervention with specialist drugs.

They were met at the hospital by the specialist paediatric resuscitation team. At this point she sadly went into cardiac arrest for a further two hours. Despite all the odds and after receiving further expert care at the hospital Annabel made an incredible recovery. The chain of survival was

perfectly formed that day. It was undoubtedly the quick response, professional skills and outstanding patient care by everyone involved in a devastating situation that resulted in a lovely three-year-old girl being saved.

Given Annabel’s age and presentation, this mission was one of the most significant for the EAAA and the team, who said they were delighted to be able to meet Annabel and her family at the charity’s base and show her the helicopter she was flown in.

Chris Neil, Critical Care Paramedic at EAAA, said “On that day I was able to utilise all of my skills I have learnt in my 25 years working within pre-hospital emergency medicine. The job was truly career defining. It stretched my abilities, resilience and emotions and had the most amazing outcome. Meeting Annabel a few months later was a special moment and one I will always treasure.”

Rebecca and William, Annabel’s parents, said “As a parent you never want to hear that your child is in need of emergency medical attention. Our world was shattered when we learnt that our three-year-old was being air lifted to Addenbrooke’s. Thankfully the EAAA played a vital part in our daughter’s chain of survival. The expertise, compassion and care they have provided during and after that unforgettable day in February, has enabled us to put into perspective how incredible and invaluable their service is. We are forever grateful.”

Little Annabel will be spending this Christmas together with her family, and this is all thanks to you, the fantastic communities who support the charity and keep them flying. If you would like to support EAAA and help them to keep more families together this Christmas please go to their dedicated Christmas campaign page www.justgiving.com/campaign/EAAAchristmas2018.

You can read Annabel’s full story on the charity’s website www.eaaa.org.uk/stories or to find out more about the charity you can follow them on Facebook ‘East Anglian Air Ambulance and on Twitter as @EastAngliAirAmb.

Having held their first competition of the season for projected images a couple of weeks before, it was the turn for conventional prints on 7 November Judge for the evening was Howard King – who has visited the Club before and comes from Suffolk. He is an interesting man - he is a very keen amateur photographer – and also runs a professional service photographing funerals.

The winner of the Novices was Hanne Siebers who had captured a lovely view across the salt marshes with a sinking sun titled ‘Evening Descends’. Second came Clive Matthews with ‘Just Look’ and third ‘Surreal Sea from Ian Moxey.

WHY CHOOSE SILVER SIL VER & W WARD ARD SOLICIT ORS in 201 ? 201 ? SOLICITORS

“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difficult difficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offers offers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT APPOINTMENT,, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norfolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.

“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 201 to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.

Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 01263 823465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk

North East Norfolk Bird Club Birding walk Holkham Park and Beach on 16 December 2018 10am – 3.30pm - Meet at Holkham Village car park TF 891 436 Approach Holkham from the A149. At the Victoria Hotel (NR23 1RG) turn south towards Holkham Hall. Continue along this road and turn right into the car park immediately before the Hall gates. Note: Bring a packed lunch! For most of the walk walking boots will be adequate but if we go to Holkham Bay, wellies are advised. Distance: about 5 miles but it depends on how far we have to walk for snow bunting and shore larks if they are present. We will explore the hall grounds and lake. At this time of year, the lake should have a good variety of wildfowl and cormorants. The mature parkland surrounding the hall and lake is

good for tits, nuthatches, tree creepers, woodpeckers, red kites and other raptors are sometimes seen too. After our packed lunch, we will walk north of the A149 to Lady Anne's Drive to look at the wintering flocks of geese and other wildfowl grazing on the fields and then if we have enough light we may walk either west into the pine woods to the first hide or into Holkham Bay depending on what birds are about. If we have prior knowledge that there are either twite or shore larks in the Bay, we will go seawards on our walk. Children welcome if accompanied by wellbehaved adults, but we regret no dogs. To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing. The walk will be led by Janice Darch. Indoor Club Meeting: AGM & Christmas Social

on 20 December 7.30pm – 10.30pm at Aylmerton Village Hall, NR11 8PX - NOTE - A CHANGE TO THE PREVIOUSLY ADVERTISED DATE Chairman, Trevor Williams will be leading the review of the 2018 club year and making sure the AGM meets with similar approval from members as previous events: “We never realised an AGM could be such fun!” We will follow with a quiz and a full buffet of festive food and drink will of course be served. Pop the date in your diary and we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible there. Please park along Church Road or in the overflow car park at the church. Please ensure that local residents can still access their driveways and there is sufficient clearance for agricultural vehicles to use the road. A torch might also be helpful, as the village has no street lighting. To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing.

Local Author Releases New Railways Book

'The Liveries of the Pre-Grouping Railways' is a four-volume series published by Lightmoor Press depicting the colours worn by the locomotives, carriages and wagons of the standard gauge steam railways of Great Britain in existence before the First World War.

Volume Two presents the liveries of the railways in the East of England and Scotland which became part of the London & North Eastern Railway in 1923. This includes celebrated local Norfolk lines the Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway and the Great Eastern Railway.

Originally published as a series of illustrated articles in British Railway Modelling magazine between 1994 and 2006, this edition brings them together for the first time and features revised text, new paintings and new scrap views, combined with photographs, contemporary postcards, colour patches and a glossary of paints and painting methods.

Nigel Digby is a well-known railway author and lecturer living in Cromer, and this is his seventh published book.

Other titles deal with the stations and structures of the M&GN, modelling lineside buildings and railway signalling. Sheringham Independent 501

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Flossy has left us for her new home as have four more young cats plus four more kittens. We are also keeping our fingers crossed that Chewy will be leaving us shortly. Their pens will not be empty for long as we have lots of cats on the waiting list who need our help. Stephanie will have to decide which ones have the greatest need and who has been patiently waiting for some time to come into care. It is a balancing act and our first priority is always for the cats themselves.

So far this year we have had many cats and kittens joining us that have been strays. Some have been young mothers with their kittens, while others, like Grace, were left to fend for themselves when they become old and have health problems. We have also had young male cats that have strayed and forgotten the way home, primarily because they have not been neutered. Other cats have joined us because their owner has died or is unable to care for them any longer. We have taken cats and kittens in from homes where the owner has realised that they have too many cats to care for properly. We have also taken some in, after a call from one of the veterinary practices we use, because they have a cat that needs a new home once it recovers from ei-

ther an operation or illness. Whatever the reason, we help as soon as we can, but cannot help until a pen becomes free.

Sales at High Hedges have now finished for the year and we would like to thank Sharon for continuing to sell goods from her home. This year she has raised ÂŁ482 for the cats in care. A wonderful result for all her hard work, setting up the stall when the weather is fine and making sure the goods are clean and working. Andrea, with help from Glidy, has also had an exceptional year and at the last count had raised ÂŁ950.45 from the sale of their beautiful cards at Westover Vets, Glaven Vets and Mulberry Tearooms. They are hoping to reach four figures by the end of the year. We will have more information on fund raising next time.

Our Neutering Line has also been very busy and again, at the time of writing, we have issued 224 vouchers (71 of these in the last two months) for cats to be neutered. We have also helped with neutering several feral cats too. So many cats and kittens need our help because a cat has not been neutered so we are delighted and hope people will continue to call for this help.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please 07880 256948 it (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. We are now on Facebook. Find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

What the Dickens?!

by Fiona Hewitt, Director, Hayes + Storr

At this time of year, attention often turns to Charles Dickens, and anyone who has read a Dickens’ novel will be aware of how much he loved to poke fun at lawyers and legal proceedings. Many aspects of modern legal practice would be completely alien to Dickens – employment law, intellectual property law, health and safety legislation to name a few, but there are some areas of the law where procedures have, in some respects at least, changed much less over the last 180 years ...

Swear Words In The Pickwick Papers, a misunderstanding leads to the amiable but bumbling Mr Pickwick being sued. Dickens describes a scene at court, where a clerk is administering oaths: ‘…the oath being invariably administered, without any effort at punctuation, and usually in the following terms: “Take the book in your right hand this is your name and hand-writing you swear that the contents of this your affidavit are true so help you God a shilling you must get change I haven’t got it.”’

Although we now try to be a little more client-friendly in our approach, the wording described above will be familiar to anyone who has had to swear an oath for legal purposes. Clients often comment to us that the procedure seems rather archaic and strange. Certainly, it raises a few questions:

What is the purpose of an oath? An oath or affidavit is a document which needs

to be sworn before a solicitor or legal executive (Commissioner of Oaths). The document has to be sworn whilst holding a bible or other holy book. It is usually for documents used in Court, including probate oaths - the process of applying for a Grant of Probate, a legal document issued by the Court that proves an executor’s right to administer an estate of a deceased person.

The idea behind confirming a document by means of an oath is that the person who swears to it is making a solemn promise that the contents are true, to the best of their knowledge and belief. It is the equivalent on paper of a witness in Court swearing to tell ‘the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth’. Lying on oath is taken more seriously by a court than an untrue statement made in other circumstances.

What happens if you don’t want to swear on the Bible? Many people, whether or not they have any religious belief are prepared to swear on the Bible, accepting it as part of the procedure. However, some people object to the practice on religious grounds or for other reasons. In these circumstances, an ‘affirmation’ is perfectly acceptable, and the lawyer who is administering the oath will provide some slightly amended wording.

What is the swearing procedure? An oath must be sworn in front of an

independent lawyer/solicitor – not someone from the firm who has prepared the relevant document. It is also possible to swear an oath before an appointed court official. You will need to repeat or read out the wording given to you by the lawyer which is not dissimilar to the wording described above by Dickens. The fee is currently £5, with an extra £2 for each ‘exhibit’ (document attached) to the statement. It’s a little more than a shilling, but still a token fee for this old-fashioned procedure and perhaps not too much for a chance to swear at a lawyer!

This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice.

EXHIBITION, THEATRE, FILM & CONCERT OPPORTUNITIES

Thorpe Market church has built up a reputation for hosting art and craft exhibitions, theatre performances, concerts and live bands when not in use for services.

The venue has an accessible car park, three tier staging with comfortable chairs, boards to hang work on, a kitchen and most importantly it is easy to heat. We are currently investing in a new hanging system for the church. The newest facility this church received funding for was a large film projector and screen in order to run a film club for the community. If you think you would like to volunteer to run this then do contact us.

We do not charge for the venue but there is a 20% commission on gross sales taken during your event. All proceeds go towards the upkeep of this historic church.

Key dates in the annual calendar are Snow Drop Sundays in February, when we open our doors to welcome up to 1400 visitors, who come to visit the churchyard for the Snow Drop experience, not to mention Thorpe Market’s famous spread of afternoon tea, coffee and cakes. Other key dates are bank holiday weekends, Norfolk Open Studios and Half Term breaks. The church has a new exhibition co-ordinator so if you would like to know more about the opportunity to use this venue please contact Katayoun on katayounpd@gmail.com or by phone 07944 731081 for further information. More accolades for the quality of North Norfolk’s coastal waters

Further boost for the district’s six award-winning Blue Flag beaches The fantastic quality of the bathing water around the North Norfolk coast has once again been officially recognised.

Earlier this year, the district was awarded Blue Flags for six of its beaches, and no district in England has more. The government has now informed North Norfolk District Council that the water off all six of those beaches – at Cromer, East Runton, Mundesley, Sea Palling, Sheringham and West Runton – is deemed to be “excellent.

The classifications are based on data collected by the Environment Agency and will be officially in place for next year. It means the six beaches are well placed ahead of applications to renew their Blue Flag awards, with water quality one of the key measures under the Blue Flag scheme.

BRETT WOWS THE CROWD AT BRISTON!

On Friday 16 November, top UK organist Brett Wales performed the last Briston Organ Show for 2018, when he brought along his amazing Wersi Sonic organ (a very expensive instrument indeed!) and thrilled the capacity crowd with such items as the catchy ‘A Banda’, the Toto classic ‘Africa’, Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, ‘In A Persian Market’, ‘Duelling Banjos’ and excerpts from ‘Cavalleria Rusricana’ which delighted classical music fans.

Our large screen TV showed close-ups of his hands in action on the organ, and when he appeared after the interval in a Leopard-skin style suit, we all cheered and were left in no doubt that this amazing musician is a top showman too!

Proceeds from the refreshments and the raffle made over £200 for the Copeman Centre’s own funds, and our stall raising funds for our chosen charity, the excellent ORBIS FLYING EYE HOSPITAL made an additional £72.

Thank you to all of you out there who support us so well, and to the ladies and gentlemen who help behind the scenes with everything from baking the delicious refreshments, doing the raffle, and even helping out as car park attendants!

East Runton looking east

A spokesman for North Norfolk District Council said “This is great news, and confirms once again that this is one of the best seaside destinations in the country.

“The Blue Flag awards already show just clean and safe our beaches are, but these bathing-water ratings are the icing on the cake for us.

Can you help us to return the Station Approach Bus Shelter to its former glory?

One of a few remaining brick-built shelters in Norfolk, the bus shelter on Station Approach, Sheringham, is in need of some TLC. Unlike its small modern Perspex counterpart, this 50-year-old structure provides shelter for thirty people, and is of real benefit to the local community and visitors to our town. Visitors enjoy the mural of the train painted on its back wall by local artist Colin Seal and it is recognised as one of the ‘quirky’ landmarks that help give Sheringham its character. We would like to preserve the shelter if at all possible. If you are a local

resident or business able to contribute your time or skills to help refurbish the shelter, we would love to hear from you. Currently, the shelter needs, re-pointing and decorating and we are hoping to put together a working group to tackle the project before the shelter deteriorates further. Please do get in touch if you would like to support this valuable town project by contacting Counsellor Peter Cox through Sheringham Town Council by email: clerk.sheringham@hotmail.com or on 01263 822213

KELLING PROBUS CLUB Kelling Probus Club held its monthly meeting on 15 November at The Dales Hotel' in Upper Sheringham. In the absence of our Chairman 23 members and guests were welcomed by Secretary Ken Murray and, after a pleasant lunch, he welcomed Tracy Clark, a New Zealander by birth who had achieved some wonderful challenges sea swimming. Tracy began by telling us that she always wanted to swim the English Channel and did this nine years ago in 12 hours and 46 minutes. Tracy talked of problems of long distance swimming including sharks, jelly fish, passing commercial, boats, debris and tides and currents.

After completing her first major swim, she looked for new challenges, next swimming an Ice Mile in Holland. Then it was conquering the Straits of Gibraltar to Morocco and next her challenge was the swim across to California from Catalina Island another 21mile swim. Her next big feat was to swim from Robben Island to Cape Town. Always another goal presented itself so she swam 26 miles round Manhattan Island. Helped by currents she did this in 7 hours 55 minutes. Recently she has attempted to swim the North Channel between Northern Ireland and Scotland but sadly she did not achieve this due to a late departure and currents near the Scottish shore, She will try this again next September. Tracy swims for charity and over the last few years has raised £25000 for good causes. As to normal life, she swims in the sea at Sea Palling when she is in Norfolk. she told us that all swims are done in a costume, hat and goggles - no wet suit or other protection. Numerous questions were asked and she was thanked for a wonderful talk by Tony O'Shea. We meet monthly on the third Thursday for lunch and a speaker. Interested? Contact John Whittington on 01263 820333.

THE STRAND CLUB

On a breezy November day we were privileged to visit Templewood in Frogshall to view the ceiling in the saloon and many of the paintings and furnishings now owned by Eddie Anderson and his family.

Eddie greeted us on the steps and told us of the origin of the frontage, with its lions and coat of arms, and we were then drawn into the hall and through into the saloon. This is the most beautiful room, lit by a stunning chandelier which came from Paris.

When Paul Paget inherited the house he decided that the plain walls and ceiling were boring so he had the walls decorated to look as if they were covered with pale green tiles - a very restful colour. He then embarked on the ceiling, deciding to depict his life. He worked with the painter to have the four seasons of his life in each of the four corners. Spring - his youth - is shown by a young man, sprawling amongst cricket bats and tennis rackets with several pretty young women looking on. Summer, autumn and winter are similarly depicted and the spaces between show Northrepps church amongst other beautiful images. His later life - winter - shows his achievements and interests; Templewood itself; the oldest house in London which he bought, saved from ruin and used as his offices; and St Pauls Cathedral where he was in charge of the fabric of the building. In 1963 he oversaw the cleaning of St Pauls and the image shows the pigeons flying away and turning into beautiful colourful exotic birds as they cross the ceiling.

In the centre surrounding the chandelier are two huge painted people. Facing the door as you go in is a woman with her arms outstretched in welcome, flanked by two men, one bearing a cornucopia spilling fruits and vegetables across the space and the other drinking from a large goblet and looking a little

the worse for wear! This area is called and labelled "Hospitality". On the other side of the chandelier is Diversity of Gifts - an image of a man showing a range of skills and attributes and encouraging the use of what we already have to improve our lives. The entire area was requested by Paul to show the two most important aspects of character he thought we could present to the world. Our photo shows this central part of the ceiling.

Eddie has a fund of stories about his home and the generations of people who lived in it. He introduced us to them all via their portraits both in the saloon and the entrance hall. He entertained us with the characters of Samuel Hoare and his architects and the opinion of a member of the local gentry, who was very scathing in her description of the new house - "a quite pleasant salon surrounded by several wagons lit!"

It was all entertaining, fun, relaxing and very, very interesting. Eddie made us so welcome and enjoyed the tea and cakes we had laid on. Certainly after the members had also enjoyed them, there wasn't much left!

Our thanks go to Eddie for allowing us in, for giving us a splendid time and for imparting such a great fund of information in an appealing, light-hearted way.

Christmas is Coming

Christmas is coming! Soon it will be here. I’m still not prepared, despite having all year! You’d think I’d have got it all sorted by now, But I still haven’t finished, it’s endless, somehow! I’ve bought all my cards and presents, but then, I cannot find time to write and wrap them. The older I get, the harder it seems, To remain within my limited means. Prices keep climbing, my income does not! If only I had a magical pot! This Christmas I feel I’ve lost the whole point, But I’m so afraid that I might disappoint. Does it matter if I fall short of sainthood? We must be grateful for all that is good. At this time of year, there’s such expectation, We forget the reason for this celebration. We’re giving thanks for the birth of a Child Who came to save us, despite being reviled! So, give thanks for your blessings, ponder and pause, Pray for family and friends, and for the end of all wars! Frances Wraight

Mini face-lift surgery rises in popularity

Cosmetic medicine and surgery goes through trends. Whilst non-surgical options such as botox, fillers and lasers are very effective for early signs of facial ageing, they cannot tighten a lot of loose skin. A surgical face or neck-lift entails removing this excess skin. For natural looking results we do not need to over-tighten the face and neck. We can just tighten it a little and add some volume with fillers of fat transfer and use lasers to improve the skin. Such combination yields superior results and is much better than too much of fillers or surgery alone.

Why awake face-lift? Many cosmetic surgery patients do not want to go under general anaesthesia. Being under general anaesthesia can be associated with risks. Operations under general anaesthesia also tend to have prolonged bruising and recovery involved.

How do you perform face-lifts at the Coltishall Clinic? With our technique, the operation is performed under local anaesthesia with an awake patient. A special solution numbs the area to provide pain control and this lasts for 12-18 hours afterwards-reducing the need for painkillers.

What types of facelifts do you offer at the Coltishall Clinic? Apart from a full range of non-surgical treatments we offer a variety of surgical options mentioned below. 1] One stitch facelift- this is our minimally invasive facelift. It is suitable for younger patients or for those who do not want a full face or neck lift but desire a subtle result at low cost. 2] Laser face-lift- this is an excellent option when the main consideration is excess fat in chin and jowls. Laser can melt these and also heats the surrounding tissue. This stimulates collagen formation and assists in skin and tissue tightening. 3] Mini face and neck lift- It is also known by various other names such as weekend or mini-facelift, S-lift, MACS lift or a facial lipo-lift. The skin is lifted, underlying layer is tightened and finally the skin is repositioned and closed with fine sutures. 4] 3-D facelift – this is a no knife facelift for patients who do not have lot of saggy skin but have lost volume from their face. We take fat from where patients don’t want it such as abdomen or thighs and transfer it to face where it provides a volumetric 3-D face-lift. 5] Neck lift only- this can be performed through a tiny 1-inch incision in the neck crease. This is suitable for patients with neckbands. Men with turkey neck in particular may be interested in neck only lift where it can be combined with removal of excess skin.

Dr Sanjay Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS Medical Director at the Coltishall clinic has had advanced training in face and neck lifts in the USA and has adapted best practice and technological innovations. As the procedure is performed in the clinic purely under local anesthesia and not in a hospital, it offers the following advantages: A natural look . Quick recovery . Minimal complication risk . Minimal scars . No hair loss . Less cost . Less risk of infection.

With so many face and neck lift options on offer, along with a whole host of cutting edge non-surgical options, we are sure to have a solution to offer you. So why not give us a call on 01603 736487 or log on to the website at www.coltishallclinic.co.uk.

CROMER AND SHERINGHAM PROBUS CLUB

‘Cromer and Sheringham from the Past’ - this was the title of an illustrated, historical talk given to us by Mr Brian Hedge, on Tuesday 6 November.

Brian is deeply interested in local history and for the purpose of this presentation he combined the first halves of two separate talks.

Beginning with Cromer, he described journalist Clement Scott’s arrival at Cromer, at the behest of the Daily Telegraph. It was Scott who nicknamed this area “Poppyland”. Brian mentioned how the new railways in the 19th century brought holidaymakers to North Norfolk and of course this led to the development of both towns. Then we saw old pictures of Happy Valley towards the golf links; the lighthouse; the parish church; and of the windmill which used to be in what is now called Mill Road.

In the second half, Brian showed old photos of Upper Sheringham – its streets, the church, and Sheringham Hall, which was built in the lee of a wooded hillside. He told us about The Dales - a former rectory which was converted into a private hotel and which at one time was used as a military hospital. We were also shown views of Sheringham from Beeston Hill (in winter!) and also of Beeston Priory. Brian also spoke about Sheringham Park, Pretty Corner, and much else.

We hope that we will hear more from Brian another time. He was thanked by our lunch secretary, Dave Vickery; sadly, we had heard only the day before that our Chairman, Michael Webb, had unexpectedly passed away. Our condolences go out to Mrs Webb, who wished us to go ahead with the meeting, as Michael would have wanted.

If you are a retired or nearly retired professional or businessman and would like to join us at one of our future meetings, you will be warmly welcomed. For more information, please contact our lunch secretary Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or visit our website: www.candsprobus.club

Dear Margaret,

Reference your article : The Sights & Sounds of the Sixties Returns to Cromer Pier

I read with interest the article referring to the above and the upcoming venue for 2019. However I must point out that some of the details as stated are very incorrect.

These points being as follows:

It was not mopeds that caused a stir at their arrival, it was scooters. The majority of scooters from this time era were Lambretta, with engine sizes from LI 150cc to TV 175 to SX 200cc. LI, SX and TV were the description. Some also rode Vespa scooters. A ‘Mod’ from the era would not be seen riding a moped. A moped had pedals.

The second point regards the statement of the domination of music of the era being by Elvis Presley. This is totally incorrect. Elvis was a great singer and performer. However he was admired by the ‘Rockers’ of the era who rode motor bikes. The music of the era relating to Mods, who rode scooters was dominated by The Who. The Kinks, The Small Faces, The Beatles, Elton John, The Searchers, The Hollies, Manfred Mann, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Cliff Richard, The Mersey Beats, Brian Pool & The Tremolos, Billy J. Kramer & The Dakotas, Rory Storm & The Hurricanes and The Rolling Stones to mention a few.

Signed, an old Mod George Crocker

Latest art exhibition opens at North Norfolk District Council HQ

Photographs are inspired by the beauty of Norfolk’s coastline North Norfolk District Council is proud to be hosting an exhibition by Norfolk photographer Paul Macro, with his work on display at its offices in Cromer.

The Seasonal Coast exhibition highlights the natural beauty of Norfolk’s coastline throughout the year. The face of Norfolk is not a portrait that remains in the same pose from January to December but is an ever-changing canvas of mood and expression – it’s unpredictable and irresistible,” said Paul.

“Norfolk’s bright tapestry of dark winter skies and rough seas, fiery sunsets and blood-red poppy fields, pebbled beaches and wind-slapped greenery is there for us all to see, all year round.”

Paul, who was born and brought up in Norwich, added “Seaside holidays played an important part in my childhood. Several times a year, my family spent holidays and weekends in our caravan, where the beauty of Norfolk’s unspoiled beaches and wide skies provided the backdrop to our other world, where there was peace and contentment and sibling harmony.” All the prints are available to buy for £40, and Paul also has two Norfolk Coast Books and a range of 2019 calendars available via www.paulmacrolandscapes.com. Alternatively, call 07727 644092 or send an email to info@paulmacro.com

The exhibition runs until January 11 at NNDC’s Holt Road offices. The 1st Floor Gallery is open to the public 8.30am-5pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays; 10am-5pm on Wednesdays; and 8.30am-4.30pm on Fridays.

The council seeks to offer free opportunities to local artists to display their work in the well-lit gallery, giving staff and visitors the opportunity to see a variety of work. Six exhibitions are held annually.

Can we grant your youth organisation’s wish?

If your organisation could benefit from a grant of £500 £2000, it’s time to get your application in for Sheringham Town Council’s Youth Trust Fund. The fund was originally set up to support organisations offering recreational, educational, or developmental services to young people. To be eligible, your organisation, group or association must be ‘not for profit’ and working to benefit children from 0-18 years. Grants must be used towards specific projects or equipment to enhance what you offer your user group. Last year’s grant recipients, Sheringham Playpark Revamp, received a grant of £2000 which helped them to achieve their target of adding a bespoke ‘Viking Ship’ to the Children’s playground on Cromer Road. The group’s Chair, Emma White told us ‘Being awarded the grant was like a dream come true. As we had hoped, the Viking Ship has proved a great success with Sheringham children of all abilities and has revitalised what had become a run-down play area’. Completed applications must be received by 31st January 2019. Full details and applications forms can be requested from The Town Clerk, Sheringham Town Council Offices, Church St, Sheringham, NR26 8QS (Open Mon, Wed, Fri, 9.00 – 12.30) or via email: clerk.sheringham@hotmail.co.uk

Further step forward for tennis in North Norfolk North Norfolk District Council approves funding for Community Sports Hub plan

A plan to build a state-of-the-art £3.4m indoor tennis centre for North Norfolk and to improve four other tennis facilities spread across the district has cleared a key hurdle.

Funding to build the Community Sports Hub, which would be built in Cromer in a partnership with the Lawn Tennis association (LTA), Cromer Academy and Cromer Lawn Tennis and Squash Association, was approved at a meeting of North Norfolk District Council’s Full Council.

The sports hub, which was approved by the Council last year and given planning approval in September, will include three indoor tennis courts, a 25-station gym, a social area and viewing gallery, and a space for fitness classes, social activities and meetings.

The four satellite tennis facilities are in North Walsham, Fakenham with two in Wells. The plans aim to greatly increase active leisure

participation, as part of the Council’s wider health and wellbeing offer, across the district.

It would allow for year round indoor tennis in the District, demand for which was identified in the council’s 2015 Indoor Sports Facility Strategy.

Indoor tennis courts historically existed in Cromer from early in the 20th century and this new facility will build on that tradition, but will be open to the public, in order to benefit all players in the area.

Following tender evaluation for the sports hub construction, Full Council agreed to fund the construction phase of the project, including an additional £118,000 for improved car parking and access through Cabbell Park and additional demolition and drainage works. Extra funding of £228,000 was approved for the satellite facilities. This follows on from enabling works for the project being completed on the Cromer

Come and Have Fun with Blakeney Rowing Club

The next race will be for The Carrow Cup on 8 December in Norwich.

Originating in 1803, this is believed to be the oldest event in the country for fixed seat rowing boats and is quite a spectacle. Competitors are timed over a course which runs from Pulls Ferry, through the Riverside area, past the Norwich City Stadium and ends at Thorpe Rail Bridge. Club members will be crewing both Bluejacket and Hoi Larntan so it certainly will be a race worth watching. The next report will contain an account of how the Blakeney skiffs performed.

Why not come along and try skiff rowing? Socialise on the water or compete. The choice is entirely yours. You may sample three rows before deciding whether to join and no previous experience is necessary. If you are interested in the sheer enjoyment of rowing, look at the club web site at crablakeney.wordpress.com before contacting Tom on 01263-761570. You can also follow club activities on Facebook.
