COUNTY’S BIGGEST NEW YEAR’S DAY FIREWORK DISPLAY CELEBRATES 20 YEARS
All eyes will be on the skies above Cromer Pier on 1 January 2019 as the traditional New Year’s Day Firework display celebrates its 20th anniversary.
The event, which started as a one-off display for the new millennium in 2000, was funded by Cromer Town Council and was located on The Meadow - it was a success in terms of local support, and it raised a few hundred pounds for charity.

COUNTY’S BIGGEST NEW YEAR’S DAY FIREWORK DISPLAY CELEBRATES 20 YEARS
Continued from front cover... Outgoing Firework Committee Chairman Jim Bond said “This seemed to be an event that we could do every year, and the following year it attracted a larger crowd. After a few years, the display was moved onto the pier, thanks to North Norfolk District Council's support. “It has gone on to attract larger and larger crowds, and consequently an increase in donations which helps pay for the following year's display and grants to local charities."
Since 2000 the event has given out grants totalling ÂŁ55,815 to local charities and good causes.
To mark the 20th display, organisers hope as many people as possible will again come to Cromer for the day to see more than 3000 firework shots light up the skies over the North Sea.
New Year's Day Fireworks Cromer 2018 . Kenneth Freeman Photography competition winner sponsored by Hughes
New Firework Committee Chairman Pat West said “As always, the advice is please arrive early and support the local businesses in town who do support the Fireworks committee.
“To mark the centenary of the end of the First World War we will have a red glittering firework leaf sequence which lasts about one minute before the main display. There are also several exciting new sequences within the main display which will be new to Cromer this year and we are very excited to show these to everyone. I’m also excited to announce the reintroduction of the torchlight parade from Cromer church before the display. We have a new route and for those who have purchased official merchandise there is a designated area with a grandstand view of the firework display. I am very honoured that the trust of the fireworks committee has been entrusted to me, I can only hope I will be as long-standing as Jim Bond who has done an absolutely marvellous job.
The annual display attracts more than 10,000 people into Cromer on New Year’s Day with many spending the day in the town for a breath of fresh air and something to eat and drink before the display is fired from Cromer Pier at 5pm.
The event is free, however there will be bucket collectors out in force on the day to fundraise for the 2020 display.
The bucket collection at the 2018 display raised a fantastic ÂŁ10,021. Half of this was given out in grants to local good causes and the balance has been used towards funding the 2019 display.
“Just a few coins can make a lot of difference to local charities and good causes – and without everyone’s help we couldn’t continue the annual display, said Jim Bond.
Organisers are still looking for volunteers to bolster their official bucket collectors’ team. Please contact Cromer Town Council for more information or register at Cromer museum on New Year’s Day from 2pm.
Please see Cromer Town Council website (www.cromer-tc.gov.uk), the event’s Facebook page (‘New Year's Day Fireworks, Cromer’) or Twitter feed (@NYDFireworks and @north_lodge) for updates.

Market Towns Inititative - Nine Projects to Improve four North • Stalham Area Business Forum Norfolk Market Towns Approved £22,171.25 to implement multiple
NNDC will hand out nearly £267,000 to Community Projects in Holt, North Walsham, Fakenham and Stalham
Funding for a wide range of projects designed to improve the economic vitality of North Norfolk’s four inland market towns has been approved.
A meeting of North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet agreed to a set of recommendations today which had been put forward by the Market Towns Initiative working group. Each town was able to bid for £100,000 to spend on projects enabling them to take part in the development of their economic future. The money comes from a total pot of £400,000. Around £130,000 remains in the Market Towns Initiative fund and a second round of applications will be opened to access this money, with the closing date for these applications being 12 February.
The amount any one town can receive in total will remain at a maximum of £100,000 – so if a town received £50,000 in the first round, it would be able to bid for up to £50,000 in the second round.
The nine successful applicants are: • Fakenham Town Council - £24,341.67 for a regenerative project that would provide

Active Fakenham - £33,550 to coordinate, resource and market a large number of events in the town centre. The Holt Society - £7,210 to design and print a pamphlet and five notice boards to provide information on the Holt Owl Trail to residents and visitors. Love Holt - £26,000 to implement a major marketing campaign for the town designed to increase visitors and trade. Holt Town Council - £17,514 for projects including an accessible ‘Yellow Brick Route’, and a Holt Park and Ride scheme. Regenerate North Walsham and North Walsham Town Council - £99,575 to implement three major improvement projects split between improving St Nicholas Court, the town centre and attracting more visitors to the town. Stalham Town Council - £32,204.70 to improve the tourism offer of the town with an aim to attract more visitors by making improvements to the Staithe and its connection to the town centre via improvements to signage.

The Rotary Club of North Norfolk is very pleased to report that after a very successful concert in Cromer Parish Church on Saturday 17 November with Taverham Brass Band, ably led by Ian Coleman MBE and supported by the Vocalights Community Choir from Aylsham , a grand sum of £750 was raised for the North Norfolk Young Carers group based in Holt.
A cheque was presented to Julie Alford (Group Organiser) together with 20 or so of the Young Carers at the Kings Head Public House in Holt when the Rotary Club provided a Christmas Dinner for these great young people from North Norfolk who fully deserve to be given a treat and a night out.
The Rotary Club of North Norfolk will also be making bucket collections at Morrisons in Cromer and Tescos in Sheringham over the next few weekends - please give generously if you see us there, as we need to raise lots of money for this worthwhile charity.

Christmas at St Margaret’s Church Thorpe Market
North Norfolk school’s ‘do different’ panto
Robin Hood and his Merry Man, Snow White and the Three Dwarves… Aldborough Primary School’s panto was decimated by budget cuts this year. However, the show must go on! In this case, the school pooled what’s left of the funds and came up with an exciting Christmas Mish Mash – including a version of Noah’s Flood.
A warm welcome to everyone who attended events at St Margaret’s during the year - Snowdrop Sundays, Exhibitions Concerts, Theatre or Even better, it was all for a good cause. This year the popular panto raised money for Hospice Ethiopia UK, the Norfolk-based charity whose work helps thousands of desperate people in Africa. Conservation Days.
“It was really a very different sort of panto,” says co-director and Class 5 teacher Jill Morgan. “The mash-up saw lots of different classic pantomime characters desperately trying to get a plot together – before things get swept up in a sort of souped up Noah’s Flood… I’m pleased to say the children took to it like ducks to water… which perhaps is just as well!”
The children worked really hard and put on a show that featured singing, dancing and, of course, plenty of cheers, boos and jokes. Our photo shows some of the year six children in costume, including (from left) God, the Noahs (Noah himself is clutching the guitar), Robin Hood, Main Marion, Red Riding Hood and Goldilocks.
Anyone interested in finding out more should call the office (during school hours) on 01263 761264 or email office@aldborough.norfolk.sch.uk. The school’s website is at www.aldborough.norfolk.sch.uk

"It is with great sadness that following the resignation of some Officers and Committee Members and our inability to find someone to take over these positions we have had to make the regrettable decision to put the group “on hold”. No meetings or Fundraising will take place during 2019.
Mick Greenhalf will stay as Chairman and Jackie Greenhalf as Treasurer, in name only, just to keep the group open and with the hope that we can find some willing volunteers to take the group forward and carry on its good work but if no one is found by the end of 2019 then the group will officially close.
If you or anyone you know would like to take up this challenge please contact the Eastern Volunteering Team on 01376 501390 or email eastern@diabetes.org.uk"
On behalf of the North Norfolk Group of Diabetes UK I would like to thank you all for your continued support in the past and to wish you all the very best for the festive season. Best wishes, David Sheringham Independent 502

FAQs and Top Tips for First Time Buyers
Gaynor Smith . Property Solicitor . Clapham & Collinge Solicitors
Conveyancing transactions can be particularly complicated and confusing, especially for first time buyers. However, we believe that buying a home for the first time should be more exciting than stressful. This is why our team offer the very best straightforward, friendly service and will guide you through the entire process to make sure your transaction goes through as smoothly and as quickly as possible. We hope that these frequently asked questions, that first time buyers are so often seeking the answers to, will provide you with the basics to put you at ease throughout the transaction. Q. What are the steps of the conveyancing process for buying a property?
A Conveyancer should be instructed on acceptance of the Buyer’s offer. The Buyer arranges a survey on the property, and makes an application for a mortgage (if required). The Buyer’s Conveyancer confirms instructions by letter, setting out the terms of business and fixed fee costs. They will contact the seller’s Conveyancer to obtain the contract pack. Once received, they will raise pre-contract enquiries, carry out the necessary searches and obtain a copy of the mortgage offer. The Sellers’s Conveyancer and seller answer pre-contract enquiries and return these to buyer’s Conveyancer, who will then review and reports to the buyer on the contents of the contract pack, pre-contract enquiries, the result of the searches and mortgage offer. The buyer then considers this report and raises
questions on anything they feel is unclear. When the buyer is happy to proceed, arrangements are made for contracts to be formally “exchanged”, legally committing both parties to the transaction. Upon exchange a completion date is agreed and this is the date that the balance of purchase monies will be sent to the seller’s solicitor and the buyer gets the keys.
Q. How does a Solicitor or Conveyancer make the buying process easier for clients? Picking the right legal advisor for you can make a huge difference, after all you are going to be dealing with each other a lot over the coming weeks. The right Solicitor or Conveyancer will guide you through the process step-by-step and advise you as to any potential issues that may arise as well as how these can be resolved. Q. What can first time buyers do to make the conveyancing process run more smoothly?
2. Fill in forms and other requests for information promptly and accurately The quicker you can respond to requests for information, the quicker your legal advisor will be able to move on to the next stage of the process. There are numerous formalities your legal advisor will have to follow, they will only ask you for information that is absolutely necessary.
3. Stay on top of the process There are a lot of elements that need to come together in the house-buying process and it can be easy to lose track of where you're up to. Keeping good communication going with your legal advisor and estate agents will help you stay on top of what can be a long and confusing process. If you have concerns do not stay silent, it is important to raise these with your legal advisor at the earliest opportunity.
There are a few things that buyers can do to help the process along:-
Q. What additional tips would you give to first time buyers about to step onto the property ladder?
You should look closely at the quotation provided by your legal advisor so you know exactly how much you need in total to purchase the property, including Stamp Duty Land Tax and Land Registration Fees. There are bound to be times during the process when you’ll feel like there are constant demands for your cash. Be prepared that there will be lots of fees to pay for and you’ll need to have money available.
If you are looking to buy or sell your home, the Clapham & Collinge Client Relations team are on hand to provide you with a no obligation quote. Call today on 01692 660230 for our North Walsham office or 01263 823398 for our Sheringham office.
1. Prepare your finances If you need a mortgage to purchase your first home, we would recommend obtaining a mortgage in principle before putting in any offers. This way you will know how much you are eligible to borrow.
The biggest tip that we can give a first time buyer is to instruct a legal advisor they trust. As a first time buyer it is all new and potentially daunting, but the right Conveyancer will take the time to guide them through each step of the process. Your Conveyancer is also crucial when it comes to speeding up the process, flagging up potential problems and dealing with them quickly too.

Sheringham Plastic Aware is gaining ground on plastics
Sheringham Plastic Aware continues to grow in strength with all of the following businesses now identified as SPA Plastic Champions - The All Natural Company, Fat Teds, Heirloom Children’s Toys and Clothing, The Whelk Coppers Tea Rooms, Camellia Cottage, The Sitting Room and John Harris Photography.
able to achieve this status soon.
Haywood has also written a play the Snowless Christmas for a GCSE Drama group based on these environmental issues and the students chose to donate monies from admission to SPA.
To make Sheringham a plastic free straw zone would be a considerable achievement. As a customer you can play your part by refusing a plastic straw and asking for paper ones.
With the Town Council removing plastic water cups and single use plastics at the Community Centre and our 13 Beach Cleans a year going from strength to strength, this shows all sections of our community are coming on board and we will hopefully be able to achieve a Plastic Free Coastline status shortly
Butchers in the town are now happy for you to bring your own tubs to put your meat in saving single plastic use considerably.
Dawn Fresh are now making paper bags available and more people are bringing in their own mesh bags to put their fruit and vegetables in directly.
Several of our local pubs are also very close to achieving SPA Plastic Champion status and have switched from sauce sachets to refillable bottles and removed all plastic bottles for sale, with only the plastic aware enemy, the straw, to be replaced with paper straws.
Recyclable and biodegradable straws are not acceptable as alternatives as the plastic is still taking many hundreds of years to break down and is leaching into our environment in the meantime.
Hopefully we will have two pubs who will be
Our main target area now has to be the takeaways. With Fat Teds showing they are leading the way and that it can be done, we need your help with consumer pressure as well in this area. It is the old adage “if you don’t ask you don’t get!”
Both our Primary and High Schools have come on board with SPA and it has be heartening to see how enthusiastic our 19 young people have been in trying to generate change. They have been exploring single plastic use and how to remove it from their schools and recycling and litter collection. A year 10 student April

We start 2019 off with our first SPA meeting and would love to have more people involved and helping to encourage businesses and consumers to remove single use plastic. We have also got exciting plans for the seafront in terms of encouraging 2 minute beach cleans and taking litter home. In addition we want to run recycling events and encourage people to change their plastic use habits. All of these activities need a broad group of people to get involved and help. The next meeting of SPA is on Wednesday 23 January 2019 at the Community Centre Room 3 at 7pm. If you are interested please come along.

Moving, moving, moving
Elite Care Cromer will be moving from 14 Brook Street to 4a Garden street on 2nd January.
It’s only a short distance but the larger office is necessary to accommodate our growing team. All our service users can be assured that despite moving calls will continue as normal. The telephone number remain the same, in fact the biggest difference is that our new office is upstairs but we do have a stair lift should it be required. Hard to believe we’ve been going for 8 years in 2019 and we will arrange an open day to celebrate in the New Year once we are settled and look forward to seeing you there.

STREAM CLEAN
The final stream clean of the year was held on Saturday 1 December by the Sheringham Loke RiverCare Group and consisted of clearing litter from the Top Common, Back Commons and Layby.
The usual drink cans, sweet wrappers and plastic bottles were recovered, although in the layby the discovery of discarded paint tins in a waterfilled ditch was very disheartening. This was definite fly-tipping and the fact that it was in a water-filled ditch could mean a potential threat from leaked pollutants to local wildlife. Once the discarded tins were recovered it was found that the ditch also contained over 30 small bottles that once contained vodka. Some of the bottles were discoloured so it is likely they have been added to over some considerable time. Unfortunately the layby is hidden from the main road by high hedges and therefore it is relatively easy for such activity to take place.
The Group would like to thank North Norfolk District Council for arranging collection of the refuse bags. The next ‘stream clean’ will be in March so if you would like to help please look out for the notices around the Commons and messages on local social media sites nearer the time. SDFC finalists in NNDC awards is a fitting end to a successful year
SDFC members were recently really pleased and proud to represent SDFC at the North Norfolk District Council Community awards with SDFC as a finalist in the community group section.
It was in recognition of • their success in raising dementia awareness with a Moon Memory Walk • the 1500 dementia friends they have created in Sheringham • the 60 businesses and social groups who have been trained to be dementia accessible • the 120 Sanders bus drivers trained to be dementia aware • the development and distribution of their local dementia services directory • the running of weekly support and singing
groups • the organisation of dementia focus engagement days for local services support groups and those living with dementia
Development Group to help Sheringham be as dementia accessible as possible
With more exciting plans ahead for 2019, it will hopefully be another very productive year and the chance to further build Sheringham as a Dementia Accessible Town.
As well as their involvement in the CCG and the SDFC Liz Withington recently helped SDFC start off with their Community Winterton and Gorleston Coastguard first meeting on 9 January Engagement panel to become dementia aware following at Sheringham Community and helping with Centre at 7pm. Work commences on Therapeutic Centre for Sheringham Woodfields School
The first weekend of December saw ‘ground broken' as work commenced clearing the site on which Sheringham Woodfields School's new Therapeutic Centre will be constructed. The new centre has been sympathetically designed by Norwich architects, Hudsons.and the initial preparatory work involved removing a number of trees in poor condition from the ground, which is already part of the campus shared by Sheringham Primary, Sheringham High and Sheringham Woodfields Schools.
When completed, this £1 million project will greatly increase children's access to important physical therapies. A dedicated hall with a sunken trampoline will provide rebound therapy and interactive physiotherapy to some of our most complex children, as well as a sensory integration studio to provide a therapy designed to help children to process sensory information from their environment and manage everyday activities. Also included is a plan to move the conference room from the main school into the new building, which will be connected by a covered walkway. This will free up space to create more classrooms and twenty new school places. This will help relieve the pressure on demand for special schools places as part of the local authorities SEND Transformation Programme, from which money has been used to support this project.
James Stanbrook, Head Teacher at Sheringham Woodfields School is delighted that work has finally begun work on this ambitious project, saying "Sheringham Woodfields caters for pupils aged 3 to 19 years from across Norfolk, and already boasts exceptional facilities both within the school and in the outside play areas which are designed to assist pupils with complex needs and multi-sensory impairments to gain the best possible education."
He added "I'm hoping this new centre will be complete and ready for late 2019, but a lot will depend on the severity of weather conditions over the next few months. This project further extends the range of

Dear Margaret,
Mods and their Music As a former member of what started out as a Mod band in 60s London, we had to be aware of changes in the Mod scene in order to adapt our stage persona and style of music. I therefore read with interest George Crocker’s letter in which he corrected errors in an earlier article ‘The Sights and Sounds of the Sixties Return to Cromer Pier’. However, I feel that I must respectfully clarify certain assertions made by Mr Crocker. Mr Crocker lists a number of bands and artists as being ‘the music of the era relating to Mods’. They were The Who, The Kinks, The Small Faces, The Beatles, Elton John, The Searchers, The Hollies, Manfred Mann, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Cliff Richard, The Merseybeats, Brian Poole and The Tremeloes, Billy J Kramer and The Dakotas, Rory Storm and The Hurricanes and The Rolling Stones. While it is true that all these bands and artists were the dominant force in the Mod era, it is I feel misleading to state that it was the music of the era relating to the Mods as it implies that all the bands and artists listed were embraced by the Mod movement, when in fact only the first three listed could be regarded as Mod bands with a loyal Mod following (what about The Move who arguably were an equally popular Mod band?). The Mods’ taste in music changed quite rapidly turning to Soul (as exemplified by the advent of the Northern Soul phenomena) by such artists as Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Eddy Floyd, Curtis Mayfield, Sam and Dave, James Brown et al. It then moved on again to embrace Ska, Reggae, Rock Steady and Blue Beat as performed by such artists as Desmond Decker, Jimmy Cliff, Judge Dread, Bob Marley, Millie, Buster Bloodvessel (yes honestly!) and the like. Oh for the return of tonic mohair suits, Ben Sherman shirts, reefer jackets, desert boots etc and I wonder if the Ram Jam Club in Brixton is still there?! Happy days! Terry Loudwell Sheringham
WEYBOURNE WI CHRISTMAS PARTY
There was a festive atmosphere at the village hall on Wednesday afternoon, 5 December, when members and friends of Weybourne WI met for the Christmas Party.
Newly appointed President, Celia Howe, welcomed everyone to the meeting and introduced the new committee. A few brief business items were discussed, which included a request for members to select a resolution for 2019. It was also decided that our chosen charity for the coming year would be ‘Lilac Ladies’.
The party began with a quiz and we then enjoyed a delicious buffet, comprising a wide variety of items contributed by members.
A challenge had been set to create a Christmas hat from paper and there was a wonderful array of different designs on display. These were judged by Kath Griffiths, who chose a hat in the form of a Christmas pudding on a plate as the winner.
Entertainment was provided by a few members who sang songs and read amusing anecdotes and stories. The highlight was a rendition of ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’ performed by the ‘Wicked Imps’ and their choir.
The afternoon concluded with the singing of some Christmas carols. All agreed, it had been a very enjoyable start to the festive season.
A Peaceful Christmas
It’s a fresh winter morning Pure untrodden white snow gleaming all around The sun is shining in a clear blue sky The birds are singing the only sound. It’s warm and cosy indoors Surely this is the best way To love, relax and enjoy The most perfect Christmas Day. Derek Philpott

On 4 December we had an excellent Christmas lunch at the Links Hotel, followed by a talk by Mr Christopher Brooks, entitled ‘East Coast Evacuees’. He mentioned that 1990 had seen the 50th anniversary of one of the main evacuations of children from the Norfolk and Suffolk coasts due to fears of possible invasion. In fact, there were several evacuations known by this region – including one of children coming to this country. He explained how, before the war, in 1938-9 many Jewish children from Germany had been brought through the Kindertransport, to Dovercourt holiday camp near Harwich, from where many were taken up to Lowestoft.
Christopher also told how there were three waves of evacuation from within Britain. The first phase occurred in the lead-up to the war. Then, because it seemed to be a ‘phony war’, the evacuees started returning home. The second wave occurred when the bombing started. In the third wave in 1944, when the ‘doodlebugs’ started falling on London, a scheme was started for children to go (if registered) to the US, Australia or Canada. This scheme was stopped when two of the ships involved were torpedoed – with all surviving the sinking of the Volendam, but sadly with few survivors from the Benares.

With all evacuations, there was always the question ‘to go, or not to go?’ with stress and tears for both children and parents if the decision was taken to evacuate. Also, children’s experiences in their new billets were quite varied – some very happy, others not so, depending on the attitude of the hosts. Christopher read several poignant accounts from people who had been evacuees and also asked members present about their own experiences. Christopher was thanked for his very interesting talk by Jack Broughton, who chaired the meeting. We will next meet at The Links Hotel, West Runton on Tuesday 8 January, with David Morton speaking on “The Rise and Fall of TSR2”. If you are a retired or nearly retired professional or businessman and would like to join us at one of our future meetings, you will be warmly welcomed. For more information, please contact our lunch secretary Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or visit our website www.candsprobus.club
