Dudgeon grant encourages tomorrow's engineers

A grant from the Dudgeon Offshore Wind Farm's Community Fund STEM Programme is enabling Sheringham High School to lead an innovative robotics development project for students from six Norfolk schools.

Sonja Chirico Indrebø is the Power Plant Manager of the Dudgeon Offshore Wind Farm operated by Equinor. She recently met a number of the students involved in the project when she visited Sheringham High School and commented "Among these students are tomorrow's engineers, vital to the future success of many industries. Norfolk is now a hub for the UK offshore wind industry, a sector which will continue to offer career opportunities for engineers for many years to come.

There is a recognised shortage of engineers across the UK, so I believe it is very important that Equinor, as a major offshore wind farm operator, takes an active role supporting projects and initiatives which are designed to encourage students to embrace STEM education and give them hands-on experience of technology."

The project is designed to give students opportunities to observe and develop the STEM skills of science, technology, engineering and mathematics beyond the classroom curriculum, and to increase student uptake in GCSE and A-Level STEM subjects. It will also expose students to the 2019 Robotex Expo international robotics competition in Estonia that will feature technology and engineering companies from all over the world.

In preparation for the format of this competition, the 2018/19 project requires students to develop sumo wrestling and line-following robots. Using Lego EV3 kits, the students design, build, programme and command autonomous robots (known as ‘bots'), enabling these ‘bots' to be capable of a range of actions including walking, shooting, slithering, sliding, spinning and slamming. The Lego kits include a sumo wrestling practice ring and a line-following practice mat.

Charlotte Gardener is the Science Teacher at Sheringham High School who is co-ordinating the project; the other participating schools being Alderman Peel High School, Cliff Park Ormiston Academy, Fakenham Academy, Nicholas Hammond Academy and Stalham High School. She commented "Late last year we hosted a practice session at Sheringham High School to allow groups of students and their teachers from each school to meet each other and to engage in a series of casual, but structured and competitive, ‘battles'. It was obvious that there is a huge amount of enthusiasm for this project from teachers and students alike, and some strong computer programming by many of the students has given them an impressive command of their individual robots."

The October to December period completed a successful year of forecasting other than the stratospheric interference when we suffered a severe outbreak of cold.

As we leave 2018 high pressure will still be close enough to give us dry, benign conditions with temperatures not far from average.

She continued "The generous grant from the Dudgeon Community Fund will allow this STEM project to benefit around 75 students in the 2018/19 academic year, and potentially a further 150 students in the next two academic years. In April 2019 we will hold rigorous competitions which will decide which students will be representing Norfolk at the Robotex Expo next November. I believe it is an excellent way to encourage students to engage with the STEM disciplines."

Dudgeon grant encourages tomorrow's engineers

Thereafter it won’t be long before we get more mobility into the mix which will mean wind, rain and more up and down with the temperatures.

However, there does not seem enough evidence to suggest there will be long spells of cold and there will still be fair days in the mix too.

February will continue in the same way and the same can be said for March except that there will be more in the way of fair days and temperatures should have the chance to rise above average as daylight hours move ahead at a pace. Ned Nimbus Sheringham Independent 503

Car Parking Problems around the Vicinity of Sheringham Primary School

On 12 December, following the more and more serious situation developing around the Primary School in terms of parking issues and confrontations, I made a ‘Councillor Call for Action’ at the Overview and Scrutiny Committee of NNDC.

The purpose of the Call for Action was to have NNDC address this increasingly intolerable situation. Dick Shepherd, my co-councillor in Sheringham South of course attended with me to support the Call for Action. And so too did residents who gave up their time to come and speak at that meeting.

Following the representations that we all made, and after the evidence from the residents who attended was heard, the Overview and Scrutiny Committee voted at my request to set up a ‘Task and Finish Group’. This Group was to investigate the issues and then make suggestions and recommendations to deal with the problem.

That was, as I say, 12 December. Since then I am sorry to say that, despite further correspondence from me and residents to Sarah Butikofer, Leader of NNDC and to Simon Hester, Chairman

of Overview and Scrutiny urging that the necessary action be taken, no Task and Finish Group has yet been set up. Therefore, no progress at all has been made.

Dick Shepherd and I will continue to press as hard as we can for the Overview and Scrutiny Committee to do what it said it would do, in order that we can finally get this appalling situation resolved.

We will also press for a timetable to be agreed so we can ensure this Task and Finish Group will get on with the job quickly and effectively – once it’s finally been set up.

I also hope that some residents will be invited to join the Task and Finish Group. So far that has not happened, but this is also something we will press for. After all, it is the residents who, more than anyone, know what is happening where they live, and they have ideas to address the problems. It is vital they are allowed to have their voices heard on the Task and Finish Group. I will do all I can to ensure they can do just that.

I will report again on where we have got to, and whether we have managed to get the Task and Finish Group set up, in the next

edition of Sheringham Independent.

Kind regards, Judy Oliver, Councillor, Sheringham South

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER & WARD WARD SILVER SOLICITORS in in 2019? 20 19 ? SOLICITORS

“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offffers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.

“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 2019 to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.

Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 0 1263 8 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk 01263 823465

SNOW DROP SUNDAYS & ART EXHIBITIONS

As has been tradition for some years now, St Margaret’s Church in Thorpe Market will be flinging its doors open in the Spring to welcome visitors who trek for miles to come and visit the snowdrops in the churchyard on the four Sundays in February.

We also host rotating exhibitions by local and visiting artists in the church.

‘Love My Garden’ from Groveland Farm Shop will be selling a selection of beautiful spring plants. We will also be selling honey produced by bees from our Hazel Grove by bee keepers Ken & Theresa Caves. Woodland crafts from ‘Wrong’s Covert’ and ‘Silver Wood Studio’ will also be for sale. Finally, but no less important we welcome you to taste the delights of our home-made spread of cakes and refreshments.

In 2018 we broke all records for numbers of visitors and for the funds raised for the church’s upkeep. The snowdrops attracted over 1200 visitors over four Sundays. Our many volunteers come from outlying villages Trunch, Southrepps, Northrepps as well as Thorpe Market. Without them none of our fund-raising efforts would be possible at the church, especially the homemade cakes that have been so much in demand that we produced our own collection of recipes for sale.

Last year we had live organ music and a ‘Cantamus’ singer serenading us with wonderful music from the pulpit. We hope to offer this again. Exhibiting artists for each Sunday will be stained glass craftsman & restorer Neil Forkes of Forkes Stained Glass on 3 February who will display a selection of his work and have smaller items for sale. On 10 February visiting artist maker Julia Hilton and painter of landscapes, still life and abstract works Joanna Sheldon will be exhibiting.

On 17 February it will be the turn of ‘9 Photographers’ a group comprising Andrew Barclay, Pauline Chapman, Annie Cowper Johnson, Cecilia Evans, Linda Gower, Janet Keymer, Rosie Ward and Mary Groombridge who have worked together for a number of years under the tutelage of Julia Rafferty at Wells Library. And finally on 24 February Gillian Eustace returns to exhibit Sheringham History Group

Dog Fouling on the Increase

It has again been noticeable that dog fouling has increased on Sheringham Promenade in particular and also other areas in the town. This is often the case after the change of clocks with the dark mornings and darker evenings take over. I would like to remind those who do allow this to happen and not clear it up that it has a huge impact on local people and visitors alike from enjoying the prom and other parts of town.

I have asked the NNDC Environmental Rangers to patrol these areas and if necessary use their powers of fixed penalty notice of £80.

If you see our Rangers on patrol please say hello and if you have seen any one not picking up please let them know.

Keep up-to-date with this issue by following the Environmental Protection Team on twitter@NNDCEPteam #NoMessing, you can also report issues of fouling on the Council’s website.

Holt & District Probus Club

Members of Holt and District Probus Club celebrated Christmas in some style at The Feathers Hotel in Holt. After a delicious vegetable soup came the turkey with all the usual trimmings.

Pat Alker

Afterwards, Pat Alker paid a second visit to the Club. She previously came in August 2017 when she spoke about Project Dukem – through which she and her husband raise money to support the education of children in Ethiopia. Pat’s talk this time was on the Anglo-Zulu War.

Pat illustrated her talk with a number of pictures of the locations of the events in the war, culminating in the famous battle at Rorke’s Drift.

Pat has visited the location of the Zulu wars – but her speaking engagements are nevertheless to raise funds for Project Dukem and the Ethiopian children.

Meetings of Holt and District Probus Club are normally held at lunchtime on the first Thursday of each month at The Feathers in Holt.

Enquiries about membership (or about a trial visit - visitors are most welcome) should be made to Secretary Alan Holmes on 01263 710782.

Christian Aid Carol Singing

On Saturday 8 December Christian Aid carol singing at the Clock in Station Road, Sheringham raised the sum of £229 in one hour for their project for Kenya’s children affected by HIV, many becoming orphans. Thanks to the group of singers who took part and the people who generously contributed to this collection.

Sheringham Prom will be one of the places that will see increased monitoring by the North Norfolk District Council rangers because of an increase in reports of the problem there.

“An increase in dog mess often happens when the clocks go back and the evenings get darker, but that is not an excuse,” said Cllr Nigel Lloyd, NNDC Portfolio Holder for Environment.

“Dog mess impacts visitors and locals alike, and spoils everyone’s enjoyment of places such as the prom.”

It is an offence not to pick up after your dog. If this is witnessed by NNDC officers, offenders will be served with fixed-penalty notices of £80.

Dog fouling can be reported at www.north-norfolk.gov.uk. Keep up to date by following the council’s Environmental Protection Team on Twitter (@NNDCEPteam).

2019 probate court fee hike is taxation by the back door

by Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr Adam Smith, the founder of modern economic principles and the darling of many right of centre politicians, established the three essential duties of government. In his 1776 ‘The Wealth of Nations’ he stated these to be national defence, administration of justice (law and order) and the provision of public works and the public institutions that facilitate trade.

The government’s justification for the proposed hike in probate court fees is ‘access to justice’. They argue the need to raise funds for an effective court and tribunal service. They are expecting a group of vulnerable people (the bereaved) to pay to run the court system. In doing so they are failing in their fundamental duty, as second-stated above. In the UK we do not have ‘hypothecated taxation’; we have general taxation, national insurance and VAT. We should not be paying for public services out of fees paid by users of associated services and arguably, not by users of the service at all. For example, those of us that pay tax, support the NHS whether or not we use it. We pay for schools, whether or not we have children.

This is a tax-raid. There is no more work for the probate court in issuing a grant of probate

of a Will on a large estate than a small one. The system is exactly the same and there is no value-related element in the court’s work. 85% of estates are to be liable for the higher fees. At present a flat fee is paid of £155, for applications through a solicitor and £215 for applications without.

Under the new sliding scale, which is proposed from April 2019, one in five families can expect to pay £2,500 in probate court fees on estates of more than £500,000. Admittedly, for estates below £50,000, where increasingly no grant of probate is needed anyway, there will be no fee at all. The increased fee could even fall on a widow continuing to live in the marital home. Estates between £50,000 and £300,000 will remain little-altered at £250, while the maximum fee of an eye-watering £6,000 will fall on estates of over £2,000,000. It is wrong and ill-founded to expect the bereaved in England and Wales to pay the cost of upgrading the courts, when the bereaved in Scotland and Northern Ireland will not. I doubt that we would object if the proposed increase was in line with inflation or according to the Scottish or Northern

Irish scales.

Ministers backed-off the changes prior to the 2017 general election in the face of criticism but have back-tracked. It is small-comfort that the maximum fee has been cut from the 2017 proposed figure of £20,000 on estates of £2million and over. The Brexit-embattled government was not brave enough to announce the changes in the Budget; rather they will be enacted via secondary legislation.

Pandora’s Box

For many years, Pandora’s Box Lay veiled from the eyes of men. Sadly, one day it resurfaced, they say, To bring Death and Despair, once again! Most people in the whole world today, Want to live together in Peace. But there are those whose wish to dispose Of Goodwill, and make Harmony cease They say only good men’s inaction, Will let evil and wickedness win. We all have to fight, despite shaking with fright, Bravery comes from within! The aim of the Arts and Culture Fund is to improve the health and wellbeing of North Norfolk residents through active participation and engagement in arts and culture. Organisations that strive to better the community through art and culture are being urged to enter for funding this winter.

The deadline for the next round of funding is 22 February and decisions on eligible applications will be made in July, November and March.

This round of applications follows the awarding of the December round of grants, which saw four groups benefit from up to ÂŁ2,000 each.

The following grants were awarded : • SWAN (Supporting Women, Activities Network) - £2000 towards the delivery of a broad range of art therapy based classes for ladies with mental health needs in the Stalham area. • North Norfolk Arts Co- Operative – £2000

towards the delivery of a varied 6 month programme of workshops and performances encompassing creative, cultural and heritage activities for young people aged 11 – 25 in Briston / Melton Constable. • The Belfry Centre for Music and Arts - £875 towards the licencing and musical rights costs associated with a project to train, support and enable young people to perform in a musical theatre production. • Cinema City Ltd – Moving Memories – £2000. Cllr. Hilary Cox said "Arts and culture have, over many years, helped to form our history and our heritage, and enabled us to view events, social issues and economic problems in a way that encourages a wider understanding of what is going on.

If you are an individual, group or organisation who wishes to continue to better our community and be part of sharing your thoughts and ideas to improve community spirit and activities, please apply for the grant."

A New Year Unfurls

The clocks are striking, all round the world. As the old year is ending, a New Year’s unfurled. We have a chance to make resolutions again, As most of last year’s have been made in vain! Though last year’s intentions were truly laudable, And some of our efforts really applaudable, There was a lot left to be desired, Especially if we felt we were too tired! So light up the fireworks, let’s start with a bang! These new plans mean the old ones can go hang! Let’s hope for peace and joy in our lives, It’s the goal for which almost everyone strives. In our own lives, too, we can play a big part, With truth and courage and a kind, loving heart. So Happy New Year to all of mankind, May we all find contentment and true peace of mind! On New Year’s Day 313 hardy souls braved the elements, not to mention the chilly North Sea, for the Annual New Year’s Day Dip, watched by a huge crowd of people gathered on the promenade near what is locally called “The Tank”. (Last year’s total of 143 well and truly beaten!!) The event was organised by Liam Cooper and Chris Taylor and involved many local organisations to whom we are most grateful.

Being organised by the foregoing Liam and Chris, both Sheringham RNLI crewmen, it’s not surprising that many other Sheringham

RNLI members became involved.

Help also came from the Sheringham Coastguards who were on hand to ensure that all participants were kept safe, albeit that they returned to the beach a little colder than when they entered the water! As a result of this chill factor Bob Brewster and his staff at The Crown Inn plied all 313 participants with hot toddies. A huge thank you must go to the Town’s Carnival Committee who provided the necessary insurances in order to stage the event as well as being involved in assisting on

Diabetes UK North Norfolk Group

It is with great sadness that following the resignation of some Officers and Committee Members and our inability to find someone to take over these positions we have had to make the regrettable decision to put the group ‘on hold’. No meetings or fundraising will take place during 2019.

Mick Greenhalf will stay as Chairman and Jackie Greenhalf as Treasurer, in name only, just to keep the group open and with the hope that we can find some willing volunteers to take the group forward and carry on its good work but if no one is found by the end of 2019 then the group will officially close.

If you or anyone you know would like to take up this challenge please contact the Eastern Volunteering Team on 01376 501390 or email eastern@diabetes.org.uk

the day, making sure that all dippers were booked in and checked out.

This is another fantastic example of how the people of Sheringham come together in order to make things happen in the town and make us proud to belong to such a strong community.

Of course, these dippers do it because they are crazy and extrovert people (as the photos prove), which encourages the shyer people of the town, the district and visitors to put their hands in their purses and pockets which resulted in a tidy bucket collection for the benefit of the RNLI to the tune of £1557.84 for which we are most grateful. North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Several cats and kittens were reserved before Christmas and some have already left for their new homes. We have also had lots of enquiries since we re-opened and several more have been reserved or have already joined their new families. However, when a pen has become vacant it has quickly been filled by cats from our waiting list. If you are on the waiting list please remember that, if we have more than one cat from a household in a pen, we cannot take any more cats into that pen until the last one has been re-homed.

We often mention the importance of kittens born outside coming into care as soon as possible to ensure they learn at an early age to accept contact with people. Ideally, we like to have them in care before they are 6 weeks old, although we will take older kittens, especially if they have had some contact with the people who are feeding them. These kittens will need more socialising before we put them up for adoption as they have missed that vital stage in their development.

Sometimes they can be older than we would like when they come into care and these kittens do take longer to accept contact with us. Two such kittens are Nancy and Nimbus who joined us from the colony on the industrial site. They were older than most kittens and had very little contact with people. Although very frightened when they arrived, they did not spit, scratch or bite although they would hiss when anybody tried to get to close to them or touch them. When they joined us, they came to live in their carer’s home and initially reacted when she had visitors by running and hiding behind the settee in her conservatory. However, although still only happy to have physical contact with their carer, they no longer hide but will sit on the settee observing the comings and goings in her living room. These two young cats are beautiful but they will need a home/homes

Hedgehog Haven

The New Year has started off quietly with no more admissions.

The last one to arrive was on 23 December an underweight juvenile that I’ve named Tinsel.

As the weather is still mild (as at 6 January) there are still hedgehogs coming out at night seeking food. Hibernation is usually ruled by the weather. Until there are several nights of frosty cold weather they could still be about, so if you put food out for hedgehogs please carry on until it does not get eaten for several days in a row.

Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club

On 11 December two of the Managers from the Jenny Lind Childrens’ Hospital, Angela Johnson and Paula Mellor, joined us at the Morley Club in Sheringham.

They had previously, after talks with Louise Cook, Fundraiser at the hospital, agreed to tell us about all the work which is done to help seriously ill children at the hospital. It was an interesting evening which gave us an insight into the care and dedication shown by all staff.

Unfortunately inclement weather in the last few weeks has meant we had to cancel two tombola stalls at Otterndorf Green recently.

These will need to be adjourned until the spring. On 21 December nine members of the Club did a Pub Dash between North Walsham and Holt. (North Walsham at present has no Lions Club). We raised the splendid sum of £607, a record for our Club, and this amount will enable us to help with the purchase of much needed furniture for the Parents Room at the Jenny Lind Hospital. This room is often used by parents staying all night with their children as well as providing a quiet relaxing space where refreshments can be provided. If any members of the public wish to contribute to this worthy cause please send a cheque to Louise Cook, Fundraiser, at the Jenny Lind, NNUH NHS Foundation Trust, Colney Lane, Norwich, NR4 7UY, marked ‘Parents Room’ on the back. We would appreciate any assistance given. Thank you to all the Lions and members of the Public who have helped us in any way this year.

Forthcoming Events for 2019 Some members of our Club are contemplating being trained as assessors to be able to carry out assessments called ‘Know Your Risk’ that inform a person of their risk of getting Type 2 Diabetes within the next ten years. Training is carried out by Diabetes UK and it should enable our Club to help local people, especially as there is a growing trend towards this illness.

Facial rejuvenation on a BUDGET

Cost-effective special skin rejuvenation options from Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic

Winter is the best time to start looking after our skin and to start the skin renewal and regeneration program. Here we are providing a selection of our treatment that can be carried out on a budget. There is something to suit every budget so hopefully you will find something that you like!

Simplest solution is to start with medical grade skin products. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on products such as moisturisers, sun protection and vitamin A, C or E-based skin creams. If you’re not sure what is best for you come and see our trained therapists who can devise a skincare program for you. Lunch-time gentle treatments We offer simple skin renewal treatments, which really are pleasant and enjoyable procedures such as light emitting diodes, microdermabrasion and chemical peels. A gentle vacuum sucks your skin while the diamonds gently abrade and polish it. Skin resurfacing can reduce the effects of aging on our skin. Skin resurfacing is a treatment that improves wrinkles, skin texture and colour by removing the topmost layer of skin leaving it more supple and vibrant. Skin resurfacing also stimulates the elastic tissue beneath the surface of the skin resulting in a healthier and firmer appearance. We are offering 3 for 2 on this very popular treatment for skin brightening, pigmentation or acne. A saving of £ 65 Laser skin toning Next step up are laser toning and brightening packages, which are again being offered on a discount. Laser Toning was designed to combat the effects of aging in a softer, gentler way. It uses a revolutionary process that delivers the laser energy through your skins surface, to gently stimulate the production of collagen while protecting the outer layer of your skin. The new collagen softens the appearance of aging skin. Unlike laser and chemical peels, Laser-Toning does not resurface the skin. It simply tightens your skin to diminish the appearance of wrinkles. You can now save £ 250 over a package of 5 sessions. Radiofrequency skin tightening If it is lifting of skin jowls and jawline that you’re after but do not want surgical treatment RF skin tightening may just be the treatment you’re looking for. Extensive surgical facelift is becoming a rarity. Thanks to modern technology, sun-protection and awareness, we find people are maintaining their youthful looks for longer. Patients love the treatments because they are comfortable without pain medication or numbing creams. With this technique, patients see some instant improvement with increased collagen regeneration and skin firmness that becomes visible over the next 3 to 4 months and continues for up to 12 months. It can tighten loose skin on any area of the body such as tummy and arms and can be used with ultrasound to reduce areas of localized fat that cannot be improved with diet or exercise. You can now try this for a generous 20% off the full price. You can book up to three sessions or try one. Dermal fillers If your heart is set on dermal fillers, but you do not have the budget to afford multiple syringes we have a very effective skin booster program for you. We recommend 3 sessions of treatment and you can save £ 150 over a course of 3 sessions.

Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic is your one stop shop for all your skin care needs. Voted best skincare clinic in Norfolk, we have something for everyone. From facials to surgical facelifts.

From your Councillors …

Happy New Year to all our lovely people in Sheringham, and in 2019 to our new members in Upper Sheringham when the boundaries change! It will be kept special if Judy and I have anything to do with it!

I have some Surgery dates at the Community Centre as usual at 12noon to 1pm on Fridays 25 January, 22 February, 22 March and 26 April. My telephone is more easily reached as Judy Oliver has many County commitments. My telephone number is 01263 824662 email shepherddick@yahoo.com. Judy’s number is 07710 236099 email judy.oliver@north-norfolk.gov.uk.

Many of you will know that prior to being a policeman, I served 24 years in the Royal Navy. At the last full Council I was voted in to Champion the cause of ex-servicemen who have difficulty adjusting to life as a ‘civvy’. This covers employment and homelessness no matter what their medical status. Hopefully there will not be too many. The aim will be to put them onto the NNDC Temporary Employment Register for voluntary or paid work, with the future aim of creating a priority for assisted housing. From what I have seen, life can be a very dark place for them and our Norfolk Councils have signed a Charter pledging help. If you know of anyone ex-service who is in difficulty do not hesitate to get in touch. I hope to be in contact with SSAFA, ‘Bridge for Heroes’ and other marvellous organisations who can offer help so together we can get things done positively.

Let's have a brilliant 2019 with Sheringham maintaining its place as the best town in Norfolk!

All the very best,

Richard Shepherd Dist. Councillor Sheringham South (not forgetting our smaller neighbour Upper Sheringham!)

MP seeks meeting with Health Secretary for those let down by NSFT

Following the Care Quality Commission’s damning report on the Norfolk and Suffolk Foundation Trust, Norman Lamb MP has asked the Secretary of State for Health to meet with people who feel let down by the Trust.

Mr Lamb, the Liberal Democrat MP for North Norfolk, met with constituents in Sheringham on 30 November to discuss the lack of services for those with mental health needs, and what can be done to improve them.

Days earlier, the Care Quality Commission recommended that NSFT remain in special measures and renewed its rating of Inadequate overall from July 2017, also noting a deterioration on one measure.

Solar panels to be installed at NNDC

Mr Lamb said “It was clear from the meeting that many people feel seriously let down by mental health services in North Norfolk. Some who were there had lost loved ones through suicide. The CQC’s own assessment is damning, and what makes it worse is that it’s a continuation of the last inspection which also found the Trust to be inadequate, indicating that there has been a serious failure to improve services. The Health Secretary has signalled to me personally that he is taking a personal interest in the steps needed to address the CQC’s damning report. I hope he will therefore agree to meet with me and people whose lives have been affected by the failure of the mental health services. I would be keen for other MPs to attend as well."

The installation of Eco-friendly PV panels given the go ahead by Councillors

Councillors have given approval of the planning application for a 150 kilowatts Photovoltaic (PV) array of 390 solar panels on the roof of the Council offices at Cromer. By using these panels the Council will be making use of a sustainable power source and cutting down on their reliance on fossil fuels. The decision was made at the first North Norfolk District Council Development Committee meeting of the New Year. Cllr. Karen Ward, Portfolio Holder Planning & Housing said “The benefits to the environment in terms of energy savings are good news for North Norfolk residents. The Committee was reassured that all necessary measures had been taken to minimise the visual impact of this installation on the surrounding AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty).”

Local hairdresser’s new play to premier at Sheringham Little Theatre

by Stage Direct who have previously had successful shows at the Little Theatre, the Atrium in North Walsham and the Granary.

Local hairdresser, Nigel Manson, will be premiering his new play ‘Miss Marble strikes; Again!!’ at the Little Theatre, Sheringham on 8 and 9 March.

JS Computing Services

Your

Nigel, a 54 year old former student of Sheringham High School, boasts that his family’s history in Sheringham dates back to the 1870s. He and his sister Sharon co-own Hair by Solo where they have practiced their hairdressing skills since 1984. He joined Stage Direct Drama group around 20 years ago and has been either a member of the cast or crew and has directed and produced in many of their productions. Nigel has written a number of

plays and a pantomime, which was produced some years ago.

Nigel will also be directing the play and says that he was delighted when Stage Direct agreed to premier his new play. ‘Miss Marble strikes: Again!!’says Nigel ‘is a comic play, with some dark undertones, based around the comings and goings of a house at 26 Waverly Lane, Farnham. Farcical episodes from the owners of the house to secure rendezvous’ with their secret lovers do not go to plan. Their housekeeper Miss Marble is almost forced to go on strike, a non-English speaking Spanish lady is brought into the fray and is held captive under the stairs, until finally the dark undercurrents lead up to the play coming to a rather unique conclusion!’

Apart from long term members, there will be a new very talented younger member joining the production. Anna Ryan (as Meg) will be making her Stage Direct debut.

Performance dates are 8 and 9 March and tickets are available from the box office 01263 822347 or www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

African charity thanks Norfolk for best ever fund-raising week

Mike Harrison

Hospice Ethiopia UK’s three campaigns deliver pre-Christmas cheer to thousands

A Norfolk-based charity raised over £14,500 in just one week to break its own fund-raising record and bring hope to thousands of desperate patients in Ethiopia.

C

“Most of the money we raise comes from the people of Norfolk, and I can’t thank them enough,” says Sue Mumford, chair of Hospice Ethiopia UK. “Their generosity in the run up to Christmas will help us pay the wages of the nurses who work for the hospice, going out into Addis Ababa to care for patients.”

Ɣ joint, back, neck & muscle pain, stress, anxiety, digestive disorders, insomnia, migraines and other recurrent headaches, tinnitus, ‘clicky jaw’; Ɣ colic, feeding & sleeping difficulties in b ab i e s ;

The week running up to Saturday December 1 was made magical by four fund raising initiatives. Mary Lamb, wife of North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb, held an open house event that raised nearly £3000. By kind permission of the Bishop of Norwich, Graham James, and his wife, the charity hosted a bridge event in the Bishop’s Palace that raised nearly £1500. And in the same week, Hospice Ethiopia took part in the Big Give Challenge, which raised over £10,000 in donations. To top it all off a North Norfolk greengrocers, S&M Brett or Aylsham, raised £535 for the charity with a raffle.

Typical of Norfolk’s generosity was the astonishing £3000 raised by Mary Lamb’s open house – three times the original target! Mary-Lamb left with Sue Mumford The Lambs became aware of Hospice Ethiopia UK through Sue Mumford who, in her role as a nurse at Norwich’s Priscilla Bacon Hospice, helped care for Norman's mother. After discovering more about the charity, which raises funds for the only hospice in Ethiopia, Mary wanted to help.

“The Hospice is transforming the lives of hundreds of desperate people,” says Mary. “Just as importantly, the training it offers to hundreds of medical professionals is bringing relief to thousands of people across Ethiopia.

“Despite the wonderful work it is doing, Hospice Ethiopia receives no government funding – it relies completely on donations. That’s why I wanted to do something to help.” Hospice Ethiopia UK is the Norfolkbased charity raising funds for the hospice, which is based in Addis Ababa.

Breakfast meeting opportunity for Business Rate payers

Presentation on North Norfolk District Council’s spending plans North Norfolk District Council is to give people who pay Business Rates the chance to discuss the council’s spending plans for the forthcoming financial year before they are finalised and submitted for approval.

A presentation at a breakfast meeting on Monday, 28 January, will be followed by an informal discussion with senior councillors and officers.

Cllr Eric Seward, NNDC Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance, Revenue and Benefits, said “The meeting about plans for the forthcoming budget is an opportunity to find our more on the topic and get your views heard.”

Cllr Duncan Baker, NNDC Conservative spokesman for Finance, said “We would be delighted to hear views from our rate-payers, and I would encourage local business owners to attend so they can engage with us on our budget plans.”

Cllr John Rest, Leader of the Independent Group at NNDC, said “This is an opportunity for businesses to put forward their ideas for the forthcoming budget. The success of last year’s event proved very valuable. We want to continue to ensure that we work with local businesses, and identify your needs for the future.”

The meeting is open to any organisation, group or individual. Please email accountancy@north-norfolk.gov.uk to confirm attendance by 25 January or to request any further information.

The meeting, which will be held at NNDC's Cromer offices, will start at 8.30am.

Ten Year Contract for Management of North Norfolk Leisure Facilities Announced Everyone Active will manage six North Norfolk facilities from 1 April 2019

The contractor which will provide services at North Norfolk District Council’s leisure facilities from 1 April has been announced as Everyone Active, part of Sports and Leisure Management.

The announcement comes after a thorough procurement process for the Council’s leisure contract, which was advertised to potential contractors in April 2018.

The decision to award the contract was made at a meeting of North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet on 3 December, where the successful applicant was named as ‘Bidder X’ due to confidentiality rules. The name of that successful bidder was announced as Everyone Active following a standard 10-day ‘standstill’ period.

The ten-year leisure management contract will see Everyone Active responsible for the management of the following facilities: • The Victory Swim and Fitness Centre in North Walsham • The Fakenham Sports and Fitness Centre • The Splash Leisure and Fitness Centre in Sheringham • The dual use sports centre at North Walsham High School • The dual use sports centre at Stalham Academy • The dual use sports centre at Cromer Academy

The average annual saving over the life of the contract is in excess of £300,000 and this reduction is helping to finance the provision of the new Sheringham Leisure

The Council thanked the existing contractors Places For People for all they have done for more than 20 years, where an excellent reputation has been developed for delivering high quality public leisure facilities.

All staff at the six facilities will be transferred over to the new contract under TUPE Regulations, which preserve employees' terms and conditions when a business is transferred to a new employer.

This means staff currently employed at the six centres, either by the current contract holder or North Norfolk District Council, will continue to be employed but by the new contractor.

Festive service brings schools together

Children from a Cromer school celebrated the festive season at a Christmas service featuring pupils from academies across Norfolk and Suffolk.

Held at the medieval St Andrew’s Hall in Norwich on Wednesday 12 December, the Inspiration Trust’s annual Christmas service featured readings, carols, and music by pupils and staff from its schools in Cromer, Great Yarmouth, Norwich, Lowestoft, and Thetford.

Cromer Academy pupil Anwyn Chapman opened the concert with the solo of Once In Royal David’s City as a candlelit procession led through the hall.

and performances.

Joint choirs and orchestras from the Trust’s primary and secondary schools performed traditional festive pieces including Away in a Manger and Gaudete, and pupils and staff gave traditional readings telling the story of Jesus’ birth.

The audience joined in for hymns including O Come, All Ye Faithful and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing. The programme was put together by Inspiration Trust director of music John Stephens, with music staff across the schools helping to coordinate rehearsals

Panto Success at Northrepps

Northrepps first ever Pantomime was a real success. On Friday 7 and Saturday 8 December, Jack and the Beanstalk was seen by a very happy audience of over 300 adults and children at the capacity sold out performances.

Northrepps Village Hall was beautifully transformed into a magical theatre by Blackout, the company that supplied the lighting, rig, and theatre drapes. Super talented Rachel Lamb, made and painted all the scenery and props, which bought the pantomine to life.

Woodlands Indoor Bowls Club

The adaptation written by Gavin Smith, starred a cast of colourful characters all wonderfully portrayed by local residents. He wrote the script to reflect historical village references and people, bringing a quirky and humorous version of the original fairy tale.

The show included songs and dance plus choral narration lead by Top Banana’s front man Dave Burns. Based in the mystical village of Holt Road, Upper Sheringham NR26 8TU Toprepps, we saw Jack and his mother struggling against increasing rent and an even bigger bar bill! Along comes a dancing cow and a mysterious character looking for the coffee mecca of Cromer! The plot thickens with a giant beanstalk that grows to the rafters during a magical dream sequence with twinkling stars and little dancers from Georgie

Prior’s dance school, ‘Live and let Dance’. Havoc ensues when Jack steals a Golden gallus plough from the giant. But in true panto style it all ends well, with Jack and his mother growing solid gold potatoes. If you didn’t catch the shows you, can still see it by ordering a full length video recording from northreppspanto@gmail.com Thanks to the kind sponsorship from Cromer Carpets and the services, skills and time from the many people involved, the pantomime raised £916.30 for Northrepps Village Community Trust.
