Retirement after 70 years of Entertaining From piano lessons in 1948 to his retirement in 2018, Sheringham’s Peter Bunyan has enjoyed 70 years in the music industry.

Having performed around Buckinghamshire, Norwich and Oxfordshire, Peter moved to Sheringham in 1990 and joined Sheringham Shantymen, where he appeared at over 300 gigs all over East Anglia including appearing live on Blue Peter and Radio Norfolk and performing at clubs, fêtes and galas.

He joined The Castaways in 2003 and performed at old people’s homes, hospitals and charity events.

In 2009 he formed ‘The Busketeers’ with Trevor Pigott and played gigs all over East Anglia at clubs, pubs and fêtes and also played as a charity band for East Anglian Air Ambulance. We wish Peter a well-deserved retirement.

SOS - Save our Sheep

The first of the lambs are now appearing in the fields and Spring is not too far away. A walk with your dog on a bright spring day can be energising after the long, dark winter months. But if you encounter livestock on your walk it’s important to remember that after being kept indoors over the winter, they can be excitable and inquisitive when first let out to graze. For dog owners and farmers alike safety is a priority and you must keep your dog under control at all times. Don't forget farmers have the right to shoot your dog if it is worrying sheep.

Here are our top tips for walking safely where animals are grazing: • Always keep your dog under close control and on a lead where livestock is present. • Don‘t allow your dog to bark at or chase livestock • When approaching grazing animals talk out loud so that they are aware of your presence - this way you are less likely to startle them. Once you reach them, walk quietly past and praise your dog for ignoring them. • Avoid lingering between mothers and their offspring, even a cuddly looking sheep can become defensive of her lamb if she feels threatened. • Always keep your eyes peeled for potential dangers, if necessary find an alternative route around the livestock especially if your dog is elderly or slow. • Consider attending Obedience on Walks classes so that you can train your dog to be well behaved and reliable in order to have an enjoyable walk. • Remember, people have been killed by livestock, keep yourself safe and your dog under close control at all times.

Animal Magic Dog Club based near North Walsham is a fun, family orientated club offering a wide range of training for puppies, junior and adult dogs. For more information on the club and classes available please call Kathy on 01263 720730 or visit our web site www.animal-magix.co.uk

Meet Duncan Baker

New Conservative Candidate for North Norfolk Constituency Duncan Baker was selected as the Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for the North Norfolk Constituency by the Conservative Association on 1st February.

Duncan has been very active in the local community in Holt. He has served as a local town councillor and Mayor of Holt, is a member of the Chamber of Trade, served on committees for the Holt 1940s Group, the Owl Trail promoting places of interest in Holt and on the Christmas Lights Committee.

He is well known in his native Holt but may not be known so well further afield. He was born at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, educated at Holt Primary School, Beeston Hall School and Gresham School. He studied Business Studies at Nottingham Trent University then qualified as a Charted Accountant in 2005. He joined the CT Baker Group in 2008 and is their Financial Director although he has done everything from sweeping the storeroom to serving cheese in the food hall since about the age of 10.

Duncan has been married to wife Nina for 10 years and they have two daughters, Isabelle 7yrs and Eleanor 3yrs. He said, “family values are very important to me and I want to improve North Norfolk for those trying to work and support their families. I believe in promoting economic growth in the area to enable people to secure jobs and afford housing.”

He hopes to champion issues which are important to local people, something he has been doing for the last 10 years, and to improve things for young people entering the job market.

And what does he like to do in his spare time? Some golf and tennis, he enjoys DIY and lately has become interested in gardening, above all spending time with his family.

WEYBOURNE WI DEVELOP A ‘PASSION FOR PEARLS’

On 6 February members enjoyed a fascinating presentation by Maria Pennington on the ‘History of Pearls’.

As a child Maria lived in Cyprus and after being given a pearl ring as a gift, her fascination with pearls began.

She qualified and worked as a professional jeweller for over 30 years, before starting her own business 3 years ago, ‘My Treasured Pearl’. Maria explained how pearls were the first gemstones to be discovered. Over the years they have been revered, becoming a symbol of status, purity, wealth and strength.

Her numerous photographs illustrated how pearls have featured throughout history and included a Roman mosaic showing a lady adorned with pearls and an Indian prince wearing numerous strings of pearls. They remain a very popular item of jewellery.

Elizabeth I considered pearls to be a symbol of female power and had over 3,000 pearl dresses.

Pearl divers once collected the oysters, but there are now no natural oyster beds, as all have been over fished, or disturbed.

Maria described the process of culturing pearls and how a Japanese man named ‘Mikimoto’ perfected this. Oysters are now farmed and the cultured pearls take 3-5 years to grow and develop their lustre, before they are harvested.

A vote of thanks was given by Barbara Young.

During the afternoon a cheque for £185 was presented to Sandy Bailey, for Weybourne Horticultural Society (our chosen charity for 2018).

Sandy expressed her gratitude and spoke briefly about the village horticultural show.

North Norfolk’s famous Bagot goats head south for their latest job HANDYMAN Norfolk Wildlife Trust to use the 15 billies for habitat management.

Some of the famous North Norfolk Bagot goats have headed south to continue their valuable conservation and habitat-management work.

The 15 billies have been sent on a long-term loan to heathland near Thetford, on land looked after by Norfolk Wildlife Trust.

The loan follows the sale of a group of billies to Suffolk Wildlife Trust last year.

Cllr Sarah Butikofer, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “We’re delighted that the wildlife trusts see the same potential benefits as we do. The goats are a cost-effective way of managing vegetation and vulnerable habitats, and they act as a draw for tourists, too.”

clint_brown_1@hotmail.com

John Milton, Head of Nature Reserves at Norfolk Wildlife Trust, said “We are grateful to North Norfolk District Council for loaning us the 15 Bagot goats. For some time we have wanted to experiment with grazing by goats to deal with bramble and gorse, which are a particular issue on some areas in the Brecks restored to grass heath from forestry.”

NNDC’s herd of goats spend the summer on Cromer cliff, where they have provided a cheap and easy way to keep the undergrowth under control. Nine nannies and three nanny kids are currently grazing at Salthouse Heath, getting ready for their next shift back at the seaside later this year, and the herd is expected to welcome some new kids in the next few days.

The Bagot is a rare breed, so the council and the wildlife trusts are playing a key role in securing the breed’s future.

Madeline – a quarter of a quartet! Information evening for agents Madeline Hudson, from Overstrand has a busy life.

She is a French teacher at the Belfry Arts Centre in Overstrand, an actress who has performed at both the Cromer Pavilion and at the Sheringham Little Theatre and a singer with the Walker Brothers of Norfolk, raising money for both local and national charities.

Her next production combines her skills as an actress and a singer as she takes the role of Jean in the production of Quartet. Jean is an opera singer, a world-renowned soprano…. at least she was.

She suddenly stopped singing and no one knows why. When she arrives at a home for retired performers, she finds that not only is her ex-husband there, but two other opera singers with whom she has sung in the past. The four opera singers are pressured to sing a quartet from Verdi’s Rigoletto, which they sang together in the past, in a concert to raise money for their retirement home, but Jean absolutely refuses.

Will they persuade her to sing? Will Madeline have to learn to sing opera? All will be revealed in this humorous but poignant play.

Quartet is a Little Theatre Players production and will be on at the Sheringham Little Theatre from Thursday 21 March to Saturday 23 March.

Tickets are £12 from the Theatre Box office 01263 761468 www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

and candidates in advance of North Norfolk District Council elections in May

Ahead of the Local Government Elections to be held on Thursday 2 May 2019, North Norfolk District Council will be holding an agents and candidates briefing at 6pm on Thursday 7 March at the District Council’s offices, Holt Road, Cromer.

The evening will inform potential candidates and political agents about the election process and what steps are involved in standing. Returning Officer and Head of Paid Service Steve Blatch will host a presentation covering such key areas as the election timetable and key dates, the nominations process, candidate qualifications/disqualifications, the role of agents and rules relating to election publicity. He will also outline postal voting arrangements, what happens on the day of poll, count arrangements, candidate expenses and key contacts.

Information shared at this briefing will also be available on the Council’s website after the event for people who are unable to attend. This information will appear alongside links to copies of nomination forms and Electoral Commission guidance.

Mr Blatch said “Elections to North Norfolk District Council for the four years from May 2019 will take place on Thursday 2 May 2019. These elections are being contested on new ward boundaries and the briefing event will provide an opportunity for anyone considering standing as a candidate to be a District Councillor to ask questions on the process of nominations, election publicity, and the poll and count processes. The briefing is intended to make the process of standing as a candidate at these elections as easy as possible.”

If you would like to attend then please contact the Council’s Elections Team on 01263 516266 or by email elections@north-norfolk.gov.uk.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Apologies to anyone who has recently tried to contact Stephanie but has been unable to do so as we have had problems with calls. The original problem was caused by power failures which meant that, although the phone rang, there was no connection, Stephanie would therefore be unaware that someone was calling and the answer phone was, of course, also unavailable. This happened over several days, lasting from about 9 am until 1 pm and affected Stephanie and her neighbours. As this occurred during the cold spell, we were also concerned as it affected the heating for our cat pens. Thankfully normal service was eventually resumed.

Another problem then emerged for Stephanie, and her long-suffering neighbours, which we are hoping has also been dealt with. The phone has been ringing but when she picks up the telephone, she cannot hear the person on the other end of the line (this has happened on several occasions when I have rung her). The answer phone has taken messages when she is not available but, again, she cannot hear what the person says.

If you have rung recently, have not heard back and still need to speak to her, please call again. As Open Reach have recently been working in the area, she and her neighbours are all hoping the problem has now been resolved.

Some of the cats that come into care have quite challenging problems when they join us. One such cat was Grace, (who we have mentioned before), a very small cat who had been handed in as a stray at the vets. Grace was very thin and we thought she was quite old. She had terrible diarrhoea and was initially fed just on fish. Gradually chicken was introduced to her diet before starting to give her special food for

sensitive stomachs.

Stephanie has gradually been adding ordinary cat food to her diet and we are hoping she will soon be on just normal cat food. Looking at Grace now and comparing her with the little cat she was when she joined Grace, lovely friendly girl, now well on the makes us all so very way to good health happy. Grace is such a very loving little cat and really enjoys interacting with her carers. Once she has had a dental, she will be ready to leave for a new home and although we will be sad to see her go, we will be happy to have helped her regain good health and enjoy life with a loving new family.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

Local MP slams County Council for failing to provide care for elderly Norfolk man criticisms of failures of care and care provision The whole situation has caused my already

Local MP Norman Lamb has condemned Norfolk County Council for a dereliction of duty in the case of elderly local Norfolk man, Richard May.

Richard May, a 75 year old local Norfolk man, lives alone and fell ill in February 2018. Subsequently he was admitted to hospital and then placed in residential care, before returning to his home.

His daughter, Clare May first contacted Norman Lamb’s office to complain about the failures of the care system and provision of care that her father received which they both state breaches his basic human rights. Mr. May was put into residential care which she says was against his will. Ms. May has the power of attorney for her father although she says he is able to make decisions for himself given clear information and choice. She is adamant that his wishes were ignored and her father wanted to return to his home.

Norfolk County Council placed Mr. May into residential care without notifying his daughter, despite there being written instruction that she should be kept informed.

Norman Lamb and his office have been working with the family to attempt to resolve ongoing

with both the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and Norfolk County Council.

vulnerable father an immense amount of distress and has impacted hugely on both him and his family. My father’s unwavering wish is to live at home. He has been repeatedly assessed as being suitable for supported home care, despite ever changing professional opinions as to what that care should look like. We are simply asking for Norfolk County Council and the NHS to support us in providing adequate care and for his medical needs to be met. We ask them to do so with respect, observing his dignity rights and wishes.

Mr. May is currently back at his home and receiving care but Norfolk County Council are unable to source the double care package which they say he needs. The County Council stated that they would withdraw the care package on 11 February and say that Mr. May will have to go into residential care as they are unable to fund the care package he requires. Ms. May is advocating for her father and he now refuses to go back into residential care or a hospital. She recently compiled a directive to say that her father refuses to go into residential care and feels that this is an abuse of his human rights.

I cannot begin to describe how stressful this entire scenario has been, but most recently living with the uncertainty of whether all care provision will cease, because it cannot be sourced, with indescribable consequences, has been almost too much to bear. It appals me that any family or vulnerable individual is faced with this in 2019.”

As of 11 February, Richard May will be at home by himself with no permanent care arrangement in place. Emergency temporary care is currently being provided by Norfolk Swift Response, however they are unable to hold care packages in the longer term and Norfolk County Council continue to look for permanent care support.

Norman Lamb MP said “There is a fundamental issue at stake here. If a conclusion is reached that someone can be cared for at home, which is the case here, then it must surely be their right to stay at home if that is what they want. It sets a very disturbing precedent for the County Council to attempt to force someone out of their home by unilaterally declaring that care will be withdrawn. This is outrageous. I have been aware of this case for a long while. I am appalled that my elderly constituent has been put in this position.

James Bullion, Chief Executive of Adult Social Services at Norfolk Council has offered to meet with Clare to discuss her father’s case further. However Ms May insists that the County Council should deliver the care package for her father.

Dear Margaret,

May we please, through your column, thank everyone who attended the funeral of William Philip Woodley, who died on Boxing Day, after a long illness, aged 84. Philip lived in Stody for over 50 years and was well known in the area.

Our very grateful thanks, also, for the donations to East Anglian Air Ambulance, which are currently just over £600 – fantastic – thank you all.

Clare May said “My interest in this case has never just been about my father. My interest is in respect of all vulnerable elderly persons who have capacity and an absolute right to choose to remain in their own homes, with adequate care provision.

Richard May and his daughter Clare, have been let down. It should have been possible to organise an appropriate care package by now. I am calling on Norfolk County Council to act immediately to ensure that Richard May is given the care he is entitled to and deserves.

This has been a deeply distressing time for Richard May, his daughter Clare and their wider family. It is now time for action and a resolution.”

Philip’s life work is done now. Rest in Peace.

Yours sincerely, Sylvia Woodley

Help Run a Railway

The North Norfolk Railway is always on the lookout for budding volunteers to help in a wide variety of exciting opportunities at the railway by the sea.

From driving to marketing, educating to ticket inspecting, there really is a wealth of possibilities that you could get involved in. Two such roles that you may not be aware exist are the dining trains and gardens.

As with all departments on the NNR our Dining Trains are almost entirely staffed by volunteers, whom happily act as stewards and kitchen assistants on our series of popular evening, lunchtime, murder mystery, mainline

and Christmas dining experiences. Why not come and meet some of our fantastic dining volunteers on 9 March between 10.30am and 12.30pm at Sheringham station, platform 3 and see if you would be interested in getting involved with our dining offerings.

Maybe you have a touch of the green fingers? Have you thought of giving a little time to help tend the gardens at Sheringham Station? The North Norfolk Railway is a popular tourist destination and the beautifully preserved stations are all enhanced by their unique gardens and beautiful tubs and baskets. They are also an important green space attracting a variety of insects and wildlife. All the station gardens are

looked after by teams of volunteers. There is plenty to occupy them all year round as well as the added bonus of keeping fit and making new friends. Garden volunteers enjoy the friendly railway atmosphere, teamwork and flexible hours to suit.

The railway is in particular need of new volunteers to tend the gardens at Sheringham. If you have some spare time and enjoy gardening or are interested in other volunteer roles then please get in touch we would love to hear from you. For more information on these roles and further volunteer opportunities, please contact the General Office on 01263 820800 enquiries@nnrailway.co.uk.

The RAF Air Defence & Radar Museum needs you!

Last year the RAF Radar Museum had its most successful year ever. We are open four days a week and we need volunteers to join our happy band of over 80 women and men who help keep us going. We are looking for people to help in our lovely cafe, in the reception and as room guides.

We seek volunteers of all ages and from all walks of life. Our current team has women and men ranging from 18 to 80 and we are especially keen to find people who can help prepare and serve teas coffees and snacks in the cafe.

New Platform for Sheringham Station

Sheringham Town Council is delighted about Greater Anglia's announcement regarding the development of a new platform at Sheringham.

The Council initiated a campaign to encourage Greater Anglia to improve station facilities 18 months ago after councillors and Sheringham Dementia Friendly Community expressed concerns about safety and accessibility issues as well as the length of the new trains.

Working with the Community Rail Partnership and the North Norfolk Railway, it has been reassuring to see the value which Greater Anglia places on the Bittern Line and in particular the important role Sheringham plays on that line.

Not only will this new look station provide an impressive gateway to visitors and help support

visitor numbers but it also encourages greater use of public transport.

It will make accessibility issues a thing of the past and improve platform safety greatly. These are priorities identified by the town in Sheringham Town Council community engagement and the developing Town Plan.

Inevitably there will be some disruption to train travel. However the fact that these works will be completed before the main tourist season starts in May will mean Sheringham station can serve both residents and visitors well through what will hopefully be another busy sunny summer.

Mayor Madeleine Ashcroft said "The new platform confirms the important role Sheringham plays on the Bittern Line and

will improve train travel for both residents and visitors. Sheringham Town Council is really pleased that by acting as a voice for the town such a significant change has been brought about so swiftly and we appreciate Greater Anglia’s commitment to the town. This will provide the impressive gateway Sheringham deserves."

Deputy Mayor/SDFC lead Liz Withington added "It has been wonderful that Greater Anglia have been so responsive to making improvements to the accessibility issues we expressed. This will support Sheringham greatly in being a dementia accessible town and support local people to use public transport. The Town Council working in partnership with the CRP, NNR and SDFC have helped to ensure the best interests of the town are being promoted”.

NNDC welcomes Greater Anglia investment in Sheringham absolutely delighted that Sheringham is going to have a new station Railway Station platform. The investment in this important improvement will be hugely

Improved Sheringham Station Platform to be built by early May Following last month’s announcement that a new, longer Sheringham station platform will be built later this year ready for new trains, North Norfolk District Council has welcomed the news.

Greater Anglia is to improve services for passengers travelling to and from Sheringham, by installing a brand-new platform at the station, ready for new trains. The new facility will be double the length of the existing platform – at 80m, as against 40m now.

It will also be wider, with improved lighting and a new customer shelter. The investment of over £1 million, will make the station fit for the new trains which are due to come into service later this year.

beneficial to the town, its residents and visitors, as Sheringham continues to go from strength to strength with its new swimming pool and gym to replace Splash, the exciting work being done on the Deep History Coast project to add to the many annual events for which Sheringham is already so well known.”

Cllr Doug Smith, ward member for Sheringham North, said “52 years after the smallest railway station in Britain was built from railway sleepers over a single weekend, Sheringham is to have over £1million spent on a high tech 21st century railway station. Let's put the flags out and start planning the celebrations!”

See more information at www.greateranglia.co.uk/sheringham

Cllr Sarah Bütikofer, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “This is excellent news, it is very welcome to hear that we will see improved public transport infrastructure in North Norfolk. It’s crucial that the replacement bus services running from Cromer to West Runton and Sheringham are reliable and times made clear for residents and visitors.”

Cllr Richard Shepherd, ward member for Sheringham South, said “This is a huge step up for Sheringham, and a great introduction to the town for our tourists. This may even have advantages for our High Street shops to attract more businesses and spending. Importantly disadvantaged passengers with cycles, heavy luggage or wheelchairs are catered for. I am hugely pleased with this important advance.”

Cllr Judy Oliver, ward member for Sheringham South, said “I am

Get off MY land!

by Susan Matthews, Director, Hayes + Storr Solicitors

This is a phrase often associated with farmers but what if you cannot prove it is your land? In a rural county such as Norfolk, where large areas of land and many homes have remained in the same family for generations, it should come as little surprise that there are areas of land which are not registered at the Land Registry. What is surprising, is the amount of land and property which remains unregistered and how often people are unaware of it.

Compulsory registration only came to rural Norfolk in 1989 and even then this was only for purchases of land for value or leases for a term of over 21 years. In 1998, assents (transfers of land after death) and legal mortgages became compulsory registerable and in 2002 it became compulsory for nearly all land transactions to be registered or, to trigger a first registration. Shorter term arrangements, such as farm business tenancies and leases of less than seven years, do not have to be registered but, may need to be noted against the landlord’s freehold title.

In the absence of a land or property transaction to trigger a first registration, land will remain unregistered unless a voluntary application is made to the Land Registry to register it. This may

be considered an unwelcome hassle and cost, but there is good argument to registering land and property, even if it is just to have a secure and clear record of what you own.

With unregistered farmland, there is often a field swapped with a neighbour many years ago and not formally recorded, or a change in a boundary agreed but not documented. Often, it is the older generation who has this knowledge and can provide evidence of ownership. It is therefore important that the registration process is undertaken whilst current or former owners or farm managers/ workers can provide key facts vital for the registration process. This is particularly the case if title deeds are missing or have been lost or destroyed.

It is much harder to claim adverse possession or ‘squatters’ rights’ over registered property or for a neighbour to encroach onto your land. If you are looking to sell, gift or mortgage your land or property the process is much simpler and quicker (and often cheaper!) if dealing with a registered title.

The Land Registry is keen for land and property to be registered and offers a reduced fee for those registrations which are undertaken voluntarily. It may well be

time to dig out those title deeds and consider an application to register your land.

If you would like to speak with a member of the agricultural or property team about registering your land or property, Hayes + Storr are holding free consultation days at their Fakenham and Swaffham offices during March. Please contact 01328 863231 if you would like to book a place.

Public sector partners awarded £345,000 to help transform service delivery

The Norfolk One Public Estate Partnership has been allocated a further £345,000 to improve public service delivery and to help realise the maximum potential of land and buildings owned by public sector organisations across the county.

Norfolk’s One Public Estate partnership, which brings together Norfolk County Council, district councils, several NHS bodies and the Police, has been allocated the money by the Cabinet Office Government Property Unit and the Local Government Association (LGA).

The One Public Estate programme aims to maximise the use of buildings and land owned by the public sector, making assets work as hard as possible for taxpayers. This is achieved by the partners developing joint

projects to share buildings, transform services, reduce running costs, and release surplus and under-used land for development.

This can create new opportunities for services to be delivered in a more seamless way, for example by bringing teams from different organisations into one shared building. Examples include Dereham Hospital (Breckland Council); multi-site regeneration proposals in Hunstanton (Borough Council of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk) involving the reconfiguration of education, library, transport and Blue Light services; masterplanning processes at the Norwich Community Hospital (Norwich City Council), Kelling Hospital (North Norfolk District Council) and Shrublands (Gorleston – Great Yarmouth Borough Council) sites.

Land or buildings no longer needed can potentially be sold, which will eliminate unnecessary running costs and free up space for new homes and employment opportunities within the county.

Chair of Norfolk’s One Public Estate Board and Head of Paid Service at North Norfolk District Council, Steve Blatch, said: “This latest round of funding will allow a number of projects to be taken forward around the county including redevelopment of the former Mile Cross depot site in Norwich to provide new housing, health care and leisure facilities and feasibility studies for public service delivery hubs in Diss and North Norfolk.

Mr Blatch added “These joint projects, which explore co-location of services, will deliver better service outcomes for local communities whilst securing new housing and jobs through the redevelopment of surplus property.

The Norfolk partnership’s allocation is part of a £15 million investment, awarded to partnerships across England. The money will support further joint working across central and local government. 15

Free apprenticeship workshop to be hosted by North Norfolk District Council Opportunities for businesses looking at nurturing talent

North Norfolk District Council is hosting a free workshop at its offices in Cromer on Tuesday 12 March from 4pm – 6pm to encourage employers to learn more about the benefits of apprenticeships in the workplace.

The event is aimed at organisations which already employ apprentices as well as those looking for more information about what is involved. Attendees will find out how to maximise the apprenticeship levy including transferring funds to other organisations.

Apprenticeships can play a key role in helping a business grow, as well as improving the overall skills 16

level across the district. Training providers, apprenticeship training agencies and Apprenticeships Norfolk Network will be at the free event, and businesses will be able to learn about the funding opportunities available to them should they choose to offer apprenticeships. Leader of North Norfolk District Council, Cllr. Sarah Bütikofer, said “Apprenticeships are a fantastic route into the world of work, allowing young people to gain qualifications and valuable skills at the same time. “I am so impressed by the apprentices we have working as part of the team here at the District Council, their energy and enthusiasm is infectious. I would encourage anyone thinking about employing or becoming an apprentice to come along and see

what it is all about.”

Attendees will hear from an employer who has successfully recruited an apprentice and from a former apprentice who has completed their training programme and has subsequently been recruited to a substantive role within the same organisation. Training providers will be on hand to offer information on a range of qualifications, including business administration, digital marketing, construction skills and food production.

Light refreshments will be available.

To book a place, please email economic.growth@north-norfolk.gov.uk or call 01263 516331.

Local MPs write to Chancellor to demand a better deal for Norfolk

Local MPs from all three political parties have written to the Chancellor, Phillip Hammond, to request a meeting, following a letter from the Leader of the County Council which raised very serious concerns about the sustainability of funding for Norfolk. The letter was coordinated by North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb.

Ovenclean will transform your oven and put the sparkle back into your kitchen! ● ●

Norfolk County Council is set to receive the fifth highest amount of Revenue Support Grant nationally, making it the largest shire county recipient.

● ●

This indicates how reliant Norfolk County Council is on central government funding to deliver vital services for local people. The removal of this grant could have very damaging consequences.

Norman Lamb MP said “I am pleased that MPs from other parties have signed my letter requesting a meeting with the Chancellor or another Minister in the Treasury. It has become very clear just how serious the financial situation in Norfolk is. There is a real risk that if a solution to this problem isn’t found quickly, the County Council will struggle to maintain statutory levels of service delivery. This will adversely affect many local people who depend on these essential services. I am acutely aware that there will be some extremely vulnerable people across Norfolk who could lose out, including elderly and disabled people in need of care and children at risk. The Government must listen to the concerns across the party divide about this perilous position. Along with other local Norfolk MPs, I would like to meet the Chancellor to discuss Norfolk’s serious challenges.”

The cross party group of local MPs are keen present the case for a better deal for their local communities and find some way of reaching an agreement with the Treasury to ensure this short fall in funding doesn’t occur.

HEADS AHEAD

Call today to book your oven clean

In the current climate, it is apparent that there will be a major shortfall in funding, as Norfolk has a comparatively low tax base. This will mean that local people who rely on and need services delivered by the County Council face losing out and being left, in the most extreme cases, unable to get on with their lives.

We all need our own piece of Heaven, A safe place that we can call home, Be it mansion, apartment or cottage, Somewhere that is ours alone. Life throws us so many curve balls, That sometimes we need to retrench, To rethink a plan or restructure a move, Or sometimes, just dream on a bench! Our haven could be a small garden, With a table and chairs just for two; That’s all you need to rest and relax, To pause and think something through. We need somewhere to pull up the drawbridge, Someplace safe, where time ebbs and flows, To heal and renew our hearts and our souls, So we can face our Tomorrows. So, if you can find your own bolthole, A place you feel safe and at home, Be glad you found your piece of Heaven, A Paradise all of your own.

CROMER AND SHERINGHAM PROBUS CLUB

On 5 February, after an excellent lunch and with 35 club members present, Phyllida Scrivens spoke to us on the subject of ‘The Lady Lord Mayors of Norwich’, about whom she has recently published a book. Norwich is the first place in Great Britain to have had a lady Lord Mayor – Ethel Mary Colman, from 1923 to 1924. Since then, there have been 16 other lady Lord Mayors (their official title is simply ‘Lord Mayor’) and, at the time of writing the book, Phyllida was able to interview the nine who were still living in Norwich.

She had researched the background of all 17 and showed us what a full schedule of public service Lord Mayors have (despite contending in some cases with ill health). This public service included not only official engagements but also many other significant contributions on the civic scene – for example, work with various charities. There were sometimes difficult events to cope with, as in 1994 when there was a fire in the Central Library of Norwich; then in 1995 there was another major fire, 20

this time in the Assembly House. Towards the end of her talk, Phyllida showed us slides depicting various scenes in the public life of the lady Lord Mayors, such as one showing the mayoral robes: black and gold upon being made Lord Mayor, and red for more ‘informal’ occasions. There were also slides of the civic coach (no longer in use), the Lord Mayor’s procession, a royal visit to the city, and a mayoral visit to HMS Norfolk before it was decommissioned. Our lunch secretary Dave Vickery thanked Phyllida for her excellent and most informative talk

Our next meeting at The Links Hotel, West Runton, will be on Tuesday 5 March, when our speaker will be Mr Francis Furrow, on the subject of ‘The History of Beeston Common’. If you are a retired or nearly retired professional or businessman and would like to join us at one of our future meetings, you will be warmly welcomed. Please contact our lunch secretary Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or visit our website www.candsprobus.club for more information.

North Norfolk Photographic Society

Society member Howard Denner gave a fascinating talk to North Norfolk Photographic Society on February 6th.

He started by telling how after some years as a Civil Servant he took the opportunity to take early retirement in his 50s to fulfil his ambition to be a professional photographer, specialising in particular in ‘action shots’ of jazz and popular musicians.

One event that Howard especially wanted to cover was the New Orleans Jazz Festival. He knew he would need a photographer’s pass to get the pictures he wanted and told how he applied and received a non-committal answer. So he rang them up – and again did not get a positive response. So he grabbed the bull by the horns and just went there. On arrival, he went into the press office – and was given a Press Pass. It was only years afterwards that he learned

that the organisers had phoned the UK, to speak to the head of the picture agency that Howard had joined: they had reported that he was OK – so he got his Pass.

Howard then showed a number of slides he had taken on his visits to New Orleans. Most members of camera clubs use digital photography now so Howard explained for the benefit of those unfamiliar with slides that they have a habit of being outof-focus when first projected, though usually ‘popping’ into focus as the heat from the projector lamp warms them up. Members were shown the levees, the trams, the colourful local residents in such as Bourbon Street, the Squares and the Churches.

was; many of the photographs were of performers and there were dozens of them and Howard from memory put a name to every one. Lighting conditions in the tents where the performers worked were far from ideal, and those that wore white shirts in particular presented lighting balance problems to a photographer.

Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are normally held on the first and third Wednesdays each month at the Holt Community Centre. For further details please contact the club Secretary, Judith Wells at secretary.nnps@gmail.com or see the club website at www.nnphotosoc.org

After the break, there were photos from the festival itself. Some of these were of the crowd – and Howard several times emphasised what a happy place the festival

Yellow Lantern She stands tall in the grey morning light, like a yellow lantern – what a wonderful sight. Others will follow in the next few days, I shall see from my window a golden haze. They will be nodding their heads in a gentle breeze and look quite a picture beneath the trees. March has given me quite a thrill as I go to pick my daffodil.

FUNDRAISERS ORGANISE A SPRING WALK IN MEMORY OF THEIR HUSBANDS FOR CANCER RESEARCH UK

Two friends from North Norfolk are organising a family sponsored walk around the beautiful Blickling Estate to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Spring March for Cancer Charities is taking place on Saturday 9 March, starting at 11.30am. There will be three routes - 7km, 3km and a shorter route for wheel-chair or disabled participants.

The adult £10 online entry fee, (£12 on the day), £5 for children, will include car parking on Four Acre Field, (signage will be in place), bottled water, a snack or homemade cake. The event has been sponsored by Tesco and Corpusty Stores and Post Office.

Judith Banks and Angela Hunter decided to put on this walk in memory of their late husbands, who died from rare forms of cancer. They want to raise awareness and money for cancer research so that others in the future won't suffer the pain and anguish which patients and family members experience.

They have set up an event that will include all abilities, with children under parental supervision and dogs on a short lead, walking around Blickling Estate, a therapeutic haven that helped them and their partners relax in hard times. They are very grateful to the National Trust who have given permission for this event. Hopefully many friends, family and anyone touched by cancer will come and enjoy the beauty of this parkland. They hope to raise £3000 for life-saving research to help men, women and children in Norfolk and across the UK survive this disease. To get your £10 ticket or £5 ticket sign up via https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/spring-march-for-cancer-charities-tickets-55018945146?aff=ebdssbdestsearch or sponsor their fundraising efforts at https://fundraise.cancerresearchuk.org/unite/spring-marchfor-cancer-charities.

Laura Holland, Cancer Research UK's local fundraising manager for Norfolk, said "We are absolutely delighted that Angela and Judith have decided to hold such a lovely event to raise vital funds for Cancer Research UK. They have organised the walk and everything around it, and I am sure it will be fabulous but highly emotional for everyone who takes part. We can't thank them enough for their support and want to wish them the very best on the day".

Laura continues "Cancer Research UK has made enormous progress in the fight against cancer. However, we have only been able to do this thanks to the dedication and commitment of our volunteers and supporters without whom we would not be able to fund our research."

Winter

When Winter’s chill invades our lives, as it does every year, We clothe ourselves against the cold, in our warmest gear. We carry on the best we can, despite the freezing weather, For there is much that must be done, so we must pull together. We keep the home fires burning and shut the curtains tight, Only then can we stay warm while storms rage through the night. There’s wood to chop, coal to dig and paths to clear of snow. We fill hotties, put on flannel sheets, blankets or a throw. We stay warm and well protected, sheltered from the cold, Hoping Winter will end soon and loose its icy hold.

FOLDERS

I carried the folder all around By car and train and the 'bus, It looked so very important That folk did not make a fuss.

It went with me to church (of course) And all important meetings, A brown one was for PCC And red one was for heating. My folders were a great comfort What else could I do with my hands? Sometimes to add to the wonder It was shut with elastic bands, My folder went on holiday A bag protected it from sand, That folder was of palest yellow For it had to be quite bland. One day I took a pink one And flashed it all around Someone took exception And knocked it to the ground.

Then one day a business man Asked a funny question, “What do have in your folder?” Hence a moments hesitation.

No one had ever told me That it should have papers in I assumed the people that I saw Just carried them round on a whim. So now I have resolved it It made me happy when I put my sandwiches in it So now I'm just like them.
