Twenty three members and guest were introduced by Chairman Mike Clayton to our speaker Chris Bell, a Texan by birth but now a weather expert and lecturer at UEA.

Chris told us that right from childhood he wanted to be a weatherman, and so he left school and started at Louisiana State University reading Climatology. After a year he was given the chance to study at UEA and shortly after starting there he met his future wife.
The next few years involved them both doing degrees in America, and later he took a Masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree. They then decided to return to the UK and he joined Weather-quest at UEA in 2004. They both love Norfolk and find it a pleasure to live and work here.
He talked of how forecasting was not necessarily a local thing anymore as with computers, local weather stations were less needed. Weather-quest provides forecasts to agriculture, and to the renewable energy firms to forecast not only atmospheric but also sea conditions which can be very helpful.
Chris then moved on to his other interest 'Storm Chasing' and his interest in Supercell storms, which are tornados and heavy storms.
He explained how these storms were formed and the enormous impact they had particularly on the Plains of America in April, May and June. He went on to tell us that the largest storms were two and a half miles wide and could wreak absolute havoc.
We were shown videos of storms forming and people chasing storms, and also pictures of the devastation caused. After questions, David Coslett thanked Chris for a very entertaining talk which had stimulated so much thought and interest.

At this meeting Julia Stafford-Allen will be telling us all about the history of the National Garden Scheme and what to look out for in Norfolk this year.
On Thursday 16 May Andrew Chevallier has been invited to talk about medical herbalism and the cures available in the garden.
Last year was the centenary of the end of the Great War so Chris Wright will be explaining its impact on the lost gardens of Heligan on Thursday 18 July.
All these meetings will be held at St Joseph’s Parish Centre with refreshments from 7pm, talks begin at 7.30pm. You do not have to be a member to come to one of these talks visitors are welcome.
Ray did National Service for two and a half years, some of that time spent in Germany. They went on to have two sons and a daughter, but very sadly lost their two sons.
They celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary with a family meal at the Dormy House, West Runton and received a congratulatory card and message from the Queen. Congratulations to you both.
The Summer Show will at the Lighthouse as usual on Saturday 10 August.
Our first meeting of the year is the AGM and social held at St Joseph’s on Thursday 21 March. Currently there is short waiting list for allotments in Beeston.

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society in Concert
Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society are delighted to be returning to Cromer Parish Church on Saturday 6 April at 7.30pm for their next concert entitled “The Dreamers of Dreams”.
The choir, directed by David Ballard, will be performing works by two of the most successful composers at opposite ends of the 20th Century, namely Sir Edward Elgar and John Rutter.
Elgar’s The Music Makers is a beautiful ode to those who create music with words by Arthur O’Shaughnessy. The opening lines set the
scene “We are the music makers and we are the dreamers of dreams”. Rutter’s popular Requiem is dedicated to his father who had recently died when he completed composing the work in 1985. He combines the traditional Latin text with bible verses in English – notably Psalm 23 “The Lord is My Shepherd” and Psalm 130 “Out of the Deep”.
The choir will be joined by soprano soloist Zaira Palumbo who recently graduated from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and is a rising star on the local classical music scene. This concert which will be
accompanied by a small chamber ensemble is presented with the greatly appreciated support of Cromer Town Council and Norfolk County Council.

Local History Evening at Thorpe Market
St Margaret’s Church Thorpe Market will host a local history evening on Saturday 4 May when Brian Hedge has kindly offered to screen his collection of historical photographs.
The collection consists of Thorpe Market village and Gunton Hall Estate late 10th and early 20th centuries pictures with a running commentary.
The church also has a number of historic photos and documents and these will be included.
The WW1 researches carried out for the Remembrance Day Service in 2018 also yielded interesting pictures and facts. If anyone has any further material that could be copied and used, or for further details, please do contact us. info@thorpemarket.org.uk or 07980 695385.

Ring Found at Sheringham Laundrette
Owner Anthea Turrell contacted the Sheringham Independent just as we were going to press. Anthea said, “Yesterday I was helping my son Rob in cleaning out the drains in the Launderette at 13 Beeston Road. We were amazed to find that someone most probably washed a garment with a ring in its pocket, and that it had gone through the washing machine, and into the drains. It does not look like an inexpensive dress ring, and its size might indicate that whomever had it was unable to get it on their finger. Perhaps it had belonged to a deceased relative? We would very much like to unite this ring with its owner. RAF Air Defence & Radar Museum
A room devoted to the Bloodhound surface to air missile display, a radio and communications room plus a Tornado Cockpit are among new attractions at a revamped RAF Radar Museum in 2019.
The RAF Radar Museum has undergone a complete revamp over the winter adding even more attractions to its exciting offer as it opens for 2019 season. It follows on from its most successful year ever in 2018 when 10,000 visitors came to the museum a massive 100% increase on the previous year. The additional income has enabled the museum to invest in the visitor experience.
A new room has been created at the RAF Radar Museum to tell the story of the Bloodhound Missile system for 2019. The Bloodhound surface to air missile entered service with the RAF in 1958, the role of the Bloodhound missile system was to protect the UK’s nuclear deterrent, the V-Bomber and Thor missiles bases from air attack.
Research into replacing outmoded Anti-Aircraft guns started in 1944 at the Radar Research & Development Establishment, Malvern, under the codename ‘Red Duster’. The system consisted of long range guided missiles, a 3D search radar and a target illuminating radar.
The museum has also improved its offer to schools, producing learning journeys and materials that will feed into more parts of the school curriculum.
Says Lynn ‘The role that the museum plays in developing our offer as a provider of education materials is important in encouraging young people to think about careers in science and technology.”
In the early 70s, in light of the increased low-level Soviet fighterbomber air threat, UK Cold War Room Bloodhound Mark II missile bases took on a new role with the creation of a Low-level Missile Engagement Zone covering most of East Anglia. In 1983 further bases were established when Bloodhound units in Germany were redeployed back to the UK. After 33 years of service, the Bloodhound Force was stood down in 1991. The Radar Museum in Horning is fortunate to have one of the surviving missiles on display.
A new radio and communications room has also been added with a dazzling array of vintage equipment from telex and tickertape machines and other equipment used to communicate with fighter command as well as field-based machines.
Also new this season is the restored Nuclear Reporting Cell, which tells the story of how the base was used in the Cold War to warn and track a Nuclear attack and fallout if one occurred. The Nuclear Reporting Cell was formerly staffed by the Royal Observer Corp (ROC) and will have Giga Counters and fall out protective suits on display. It will include information on warning times of attack and monitoring and surveillance. It will also have information on the Dooms Day Clock used to measure the likely risk of a worldwide nuclear catastrophe.
A Tornado Cockpit joins the two other cockpits at the museum and will be housed with the Jaguar cockpit in the ‘hanger room’ and has a viewing platform that enables people to get a view from the co-pilots position. The Tornado fleet has just ended its active service in February this year, the museum’s Tornado saw action in the first Gulf War and the aircraft’s full history forms part of the display. Steps enable visitors to look inside the cockpit and also to access the rear of the cockpit to experience the view that the co-pilot would have.
Museum Manager, Lynn Kerslake said ‘The museum has totally revamped most rooms over the winter and added three key display areas with new Bloodhound surface to air missile display room which brings to life the siting of these important element of Britain’s Cold War defence capability. In addition, there will be new talks given on Thursdays in the season by a former RAF staff member who worked on the Bloodhound missile system. Also new is a radio and communications room, which brings to life the importance of communicating with our other bases and allies Sheringham Independent 507 March 16th 2019
during World War II and The Cold War. These have been added to the existing 21 rooms, meaning that the museum can have even more exciting and interesting exhibits on display from its collection of over 10,000 Bloodhound items. We believe that we have things of interest here for everyone, from those who served in the forces to people who want to know about the part radar played in the Battle of Britain and terrifying reality of the Cold War and the threat of nuclear destruction.”
The popular RAF Radar Museum, near Horning in The Broads, opens on Tuesday 2 April for the 2019 season and is open four days a week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays until Thursday 31 October from 10am - 5pm. The once Top Secret radar establishment occupies the site of the world’s longest continuously operating radar station and is the biggest museum in North Norfolk. The museum is also open on Easter Bank Holiday Monday and the two May bank holiday Mondays as well as the August one.
The museum is a charity and does not receive grants from any organisation. All income come from visitors and the museum is staffed by over 80 volunteers.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Stephanie is still having problems with the phone so if you do call and she does not get back to you please call again. Sometimes it is obvious there is a problem but this is often not the case. For instance, I phoned Stephanie earlier today and left a message. The answer phone seemed to be working; however, when speaking to her later she advised that she could not hear my message and the answer phone cut out before it had finished. If you are expecting her to call back this may not be the problem and she could have already replied. There are many instances when people come back advising they had not heard from her when she has in fact left a message on their answer phone. Please therefore remember to check for messages before calling again.
We are now coming to that time of the year when young unneutered males stray from home in search of a female. When we receive a call about a lost cat, one of the questions we ask, is what sex is it, and has it been neutered. Often the cat gets lost and does not know its way home. It is also a time when many sadly do not return because they are involved in accidents. To avoid the possibility of losing your cat for either reason, please do get him neutered. Fortunately this does not happen in every instance. One young male cat, that was due to be neutered under our special neutering scheme, recently disappeared for three weeks and his owner was very anxious as she did not think she would see him again. On his return, however, an appointment was quickly made at the vets and he has now been neutered.
The situation is different with female cats. Although she may escape to find a mate when she starts to ‘call’, it is very unlikely that she will travel far, and will probably return after a few days, more than likely, pregnant. Not all pregnancies end happily though and because there are already too many cats needing homes, best avoided if possible. A female can get pregnant from four months old, far too young for her to be having babies as she has not finished growing herself. Dolly (pictured) came in from Southrepps on 19 February. She was found in the garden very underweight at 400 gms I would think she had emerged from hibernation. She now weighs a healthy 750 gms.
When hedgehogs are curled up, a good sign is that if they are a healthy weight, their shape should be round like a football. A tapered end, like a rugby ball, is an underweight and possibly sick hog and needs help.
Dolly should be ready for release at the end of March beginning of April depending on the weather.

East Anglian Air Ambulance launch momentous campaign to become a 24/7 service
East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) has launched an ambitious plan to become a 24/7 helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) provider by 2020.
The charity currently operates 365-days-a-year but not 24-hours-a-day, meaning that if an incident happened between midnight and 07:00 there is currently no HEMS provision in the region. The charity is aiming to cover this gap and become a full 24/7 HEMS service by 2020. To do that they need to raise an additional £1 million a year to fund the operation. The type of incidents the charity attend – serious road traffic collisions, cardiac arrests, traumatic injuries and other medical emergencies do not stop when their crew go offline. While a 24/7 service seemed to make sense, the charity needed to be sure, so have been gathering evidence to prove it. They worked with the East of England Ambulance Service Trust (EEAST), who task them, to review incidents over the course of a year where critical care was required but unavailable. They also assessed the need first-hand by trialling an overnight service via rapid response vehicle (RRV) four days a week from the Norwich base. The results of this work confirmed a significant region-wide need for overnight critical care, particularly in rural Norfolk. In the first twelve months of the overnight trial they attended 220 missions, but they say that with the helicopter they could do so much more.
Matthew Jones, Director of Operations at EAAA, said “Becoming a 24/7 service by air will provide the people of East Anglia with a service that has not previously been available. By operating 24/7 we believe that we will treat approximately 600 more patients every year. Patient care is at the heart of everything we do at EAAA, so if we can be there for 600 more people each year and further reduce the impact of trauma and medical emergencies in the community then this is a great step forward for us. We currently need to raise £12M a year to operate our service, and it will
cost an additional £1m a year to fund a full 24/7 operation.”
Steve Jones has witnessed firsthand the care that EAAA provide. Steve was riding his motorcycle in Norfolk, when a car he overtook turned into his path catapulting him from his motorbike, head-first through a brick wall and into a ditch filled with water. Steve was unconscious and submerged under the water.
The Anglia One crew was activated and, travelling by helicopter, they arrived on scene 21 minutes later. By this time the ditch was filled with Steve’s blood and the team knew they had to get him out quickly. Steve was making gurgling noises but remained unconscious. The crew made the decision to sedate and intubate him to take control of his breathing. He was then packaged and flown to Addenbrooke’s Hospital. Steve had suffered such a traumatic head injury that the team thought he would not survive. Steve remained in hospital for 10 weeks, but last November he walked in to the Norwich base to meet the EAAA team and the EEAST land paramedics who also provided treatment on scene. Not only has he suffered no lasting affects, but he is also in the process of finishing his PhD in Software Engineering. Steve and his wife Claire said; “My wife and I are extremely grateful for the

are currently having a break away from their habitat management work, at Wiveton Hall, which has itself been in the media spotlight in the past few years thanks to the Normal for Norfolk television series. The herd was originally brought in to help keep the cliff at Cromer clear, but the Bagots have since caught the eye of Norfolk Wildlife Trust and Suffolk Wildlife Trust, who have bought and borrowed some of the herd for habitat management on their land. The goats have also become a tourist attraction, and the baby Bagots are sure to prove a hit with the public when they head to Cromer later this year. East Anglian Air Ambulance climb 36 places and achieve 3 star rating in prestigious awards ceremony
East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) listed as 7th in the top 100 not-for-profit companies in the UK to work for, as part of the Sunday Times’ Best Companies To Work For listing. They also went from receiving a one star to a three star rating in the year’s listing – which means they have received ‘extraordinary levels of engagement’ from their staff.
The placing and rating of companies is based solely on staff survey feedback results, and as such is down to employee satisfaction within each organisation.
EAAA is a helicopter emergency medical service provider covering East Anglia, with offices in Norwich, Ipswich, Cambridge,
Melbourn and Peterborough. They provide a 365-day-a-year life-saving service, taking an expert crew consisting of a doctor, a critical care paramedic and two pilots directly to patients who have suffered life-threatening or life-changing accidents or medical emergencies. The clinical crew are supported by charity staff, consisting of a number of teams including; fundraising, operations, communications, HR and executive teams.
At an awards ceremony in London the charity found out their official ranking, and say they are delighted to have gone up 36 places and be ranked 7th place. The Sunday Times’ Best Companies Awards are awarded every year and aim to showcase and highlight the best
companies to work for throughout the UK.
As a celebration of The Best Companies Day the EAAA team enjoyed celebratory fish and chips at their Staff Day to enable duty crew and everyone to be together in one place. A full list of the top 100 Best Companies to work for was published in The Sunday Times.

East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust performance declines in 2018 staff survey Former Health Minister Norman Lamb MP calls on the Trust to act quickly to restore staff confidence.
The release of the 2018 NHS Staff Survey has revealed worrying results for the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust. Performance has declined according to several indicators – most notably in terms of bullying and harassment, a measure on which the Trust appears to be the worst performer out of all Ambulance Services in England.
Staff stress levels have increased: 58% of staff felt unwell due to stress related illness in 2018, a rise of 6% from 2017.
Over 50% of staff agree that they “often think” about leaving the Trust – compared to an average of 38.9% in other Ambulance Services. Less than 15% of staff thought there were enough staff at the Trust to enable them to carry out their roles. This compares to 17.8% of staff in 2017. 18
On all of these measures, the East of England Ambulance Service appears to be the worst performing of all Ambulance Services in England. The Trust’s performance has deteriorated compared to 2017 on all of these measures.
Former Health Minister and MP for North Norfolk, Norman Lamb, said it was “urgent and important” that the Trust address serious cultural issues which clearly undermine performance and risk patient safety.
He added “These worrying statistics provide further evidence that the culture at the Trust needs to change. I hope that the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust is treating these results with the importance they deserve. It’s totally unacceptable for any staff to work in an atmosphere of bullying and harassment. That sort of behaviour should not be tolerated under any circumstance, particularly a health trust. More broadly, the
sort of environment which the figures uncover is one which is clearly damaging both to staff, as this survey shows, but also to patients. It’s urgent and important that the Trust and the regulator, NHS Improvement, gets its act together and solves this culture problem. To fail to do so would be morally irresponsible. The results of the survey are especially disappointing given I obtained data last week revealing that the Trust had spent £275,000 in legal fees inappropriately defending the unfair dismissal of a former employee with mental health problems exacerbated by problems at work. The contempt with which the Trust treated that former employee deeply concerned me. They cannot behave like this. I’m calling on NHS Improvement to finally confront an unacceptable culture which I have been highlighting for the last year. When the next Staffing Survey is published in 12 months, improvements on all these indicators is the only acceptable outcome.”

A new charity has been set up in North Norfolk as a response to the loss of statutory services for the mentally ill, and also because of serious financial cuts to many voluntary organizations who have traditionally supported those who have suffered from mental disorder. The name of the charity is ‘Share as One for Mental Health’.
The objects of the charity are primarily the advancement of psychological well-being, mental health and suicide prevention. We aim to pursue the eradication of the stigma surrounding mental illness, and support the aim of parity of esteem between physical and mental illness.
‘No physical health without mental health’
The aim is to get people together to support each other especially with issues such as advocacy, welfare rights, housing, homelessness, and the need for adequate, swift treatment when in crisis. We also wish to encourage one another to participate in leisure activities which give enjoyment and reduce stress.
Our charity is already in partnership with Cromer Football Club where we intend to help maximize the use of the Clubhouse (which is based right next to the new Cromer Medical Centre) for the benefit of the community.
A weekly drop-in group will meet there, as well as other support groups. We would also like to join with other voluntary organizations to achieve the establishment of a respite sanctuary for the suicidal, such as the one set up by Samaritans in London called the Maytree Sanctuary.
First drop-in group get together will start on Tuesday 2 April at 10am at the Clubhouse, Mill Road, Cromer NR27 0BG - all welcome.
The founders of the charity have either experienced mental illness themselves, or worked either in the voluntary sector or in statutory mental health services. Thirty three of us sat down to a splendid three course meal in the restaurant. We welcomed fellow Lions from Taverham & District, Norwich North Alpha, Dereham, Beccles, UEA, Attleborough and the newest club in our Zone, Reepham.
I believe I can speak for everyone when I say that the food was very good indeed and the service, considering the number of diners was also good.
Steve, the owner of the Dormy House, donated two free tickets to any London Show. These were auctioned and the £70 paid will go straight to the Jenny Lind Children’s Hospital towards their new Parent’s Room.

The Heritage Centre at Bircham Newton has a unique collection of memorabilia from the former 5R\DO $LU )RUFH VWDWLRQÂśV SDVW VHUYLFH ZKLFK VSDQQHG PRUH WKDQ \HDUV LQFOXGLQJ WZR ZRUOG wars and the Cold War. Santa Cycle Ride raised £1550 for About with Friends and NANSA
The Trunch Fatboys Cycling Club annual charity Santa cycle ride raised a total of £1550 to be divided between About with Friends, Cromer and NANSA.
Maurice Page, Trunch Fatboys Chairman, said that support from the pubs, their customers and from passers by was great. The cyclists were respectful of other traffic and everyone had a fantastic day.
Dressed as Santas and Elves, 32 cyclists from local towns and villages, Norwich and Australia (one Santa!) toured five pubs in North Norfolk on 9 December. They received a warm welcome at Hill House, Happisburgh, Walcott Lighthouse, The Ship Inn, Mundesley, Trunch Crown and finished at Trunch Social Club for a well-deserved buffet laid on by the riders and friends.
About with Friends Chief Executive Officer, Helen Dalton-Hare, said “Many thanks to all who took part in the cycle ride and everyone who supported them. The donation of £775 will be used to fund Workskills member training days and activities. We greatly appreciate the ongoing support of the Trunch Fatboys Cycling Club”.

North Norfolk Business Awards celebrate the best in class
Second annual event highlights the success stories of the district
The second North Norfolk Business Awards were held last month, with two dozen of the district’s businesses winning plaudits for their success.
The awards, organised by North Norfolk District Council and held at Gresham’s School, saw awards presented in eight main categories, as well as a Chairman’s Award, which was presented for the first time this year.

As usual, children are welcome if accompanied by well-behaved adults, but we regret no dogs. Kelling Heath, Quags and Muckleburgh Hill on Saturday 23 March 10am to 4pm 9am–1pm – meet at the Kelling Heath car park off Holgate Hill, Holt NR25 7ER, Grid Reference (No OS ODL TG 100419, between the Kelling Charge) Estate garden centre (ex-EMCY) and Weybourne. The slightly obscured turn into the car park is on the western side of the road in a dip near the summit.The Note: Walking boots with ankle support soles are bowling green hasand6grippy rinks advised as there will be short sections of hills to ascend and descend. A scope will be useful but not essential. Distance: 6.5 miles Today's Lounge and bar area walk will take us across the heath where we will look for the heath's Normal opening hours special birds such as Woodlark, Dartford Warbler and Turtle Dove. Indoor meeting a talk by Andy Clements - Birds' interactions with the landscape: BTO research at global to local scales on Thursday 28 March 7.30pm–9.30pm - the talk covers local monitoring and what evidence from Atlas and other surveys tells us about changes in distribution and abundance, and then moves to uncovering the mysteries of migration, using various species including cuckoos, swifts, spotted flycatchers and nightingales. Andy joined the Nature Conservancy Council in 1982, and his 24 years with the Government nature conservation agency included field-work on upland birds, Communications and European work and securing Lottery funds for local community areas

His work at BTO has included leadership of the BTO Strategy 2009-2014, representing BTO in Government and ensuring our strong profile alongside other Third Sector wildlife organisations. Andy sits on the Cambridge Conservation Initiative Steering Group www.conservation .cam.ac.uk, helping to link BTO scientific research with policy.
