Sheringham History Group
The Sheringham History Group meeting on 3 April will be given by Russell Yeomans on the topic of the Gunton Park water powered sawmill.
Featuring on national TV in both drama and documentaries, the story will run from initial building and operations of the mill in 1824, through decline, followed by restoration from 1988 onwards as a working history museum
A highlight of Russell’s talk will be his description of the part the mill played in producing the detailed wooden carriage for the Mo museum cannon. Russell has kindly stepped in to replace the previously advertised talk which will now be given later in the year.
The meeting will start at 7.30pm, preceded by tea/coffee from 7pm.

Sheringham Stroke Support Club Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club On Tuesday 5 April we had a most informative talk from Mr Francis Farrow on ‘The History of Beeston Common’.
On 6 March Patrick Miles, from Cambridge, gave an illustrated talk to Sheringham Stroke Support Club at the Communal Day Room, Anchor Close, entitled ‘An Experiment in Growing Chrysanthemums Outdoors for Christmas’.
While having worked for very many years as a marine geophysicist (with a background in both geology and botany), in his spare time onshore Francis has worked on the management of Beeston Common and recording its wildlife.
He explained that he first started growing Christmas chrysanthemums after his mother had a stroke and could no longer manage her small greenhouse. Patrick, who lived 150 miles away, brought them on at home, then moved them into his mother’s greenhouse to flower at Christmas.
His talk traced the formation of the Common through various periods of human history, and how it was affected by grazing, collecting fuel, hunting, farming the surrounding land or by housebuilding alongside.
Last year he tried growing 22 different varieties outdoors to see which ones he could get to flower at Christmas. It was essential to choose a very sheltered patch of ground and dig in compost. Patrick delayed nearly all of the chrysanthemums by pinching them out twice between June and August, and showed photos of them blooming from 11 October to 22 December. However, only five varieties made it till Christmas, and only three beyond - Minstreel, Red Balcombe Perfection, and Evening Glow. These varieties survived the winter and would bloom again next year.
He then looked at the recent nature conservation and restoration work and the gains and losses encountered since earlier studies, such as that undertaken by a local teacher, Miss Danvers. Her photographs of c.1940 can be compared with those taken in 2018 and landscape changes can be seen, such as woodland where before there was just open grassland.
Frances showed what a variety there now is of plants, birds and insects. Animals such as muntjacs, rabbits and roe deer graze there and even adders can be found on the heath! In 1983 the Beeston Common Management Group was formed. In fact, the site is an SSSI (Special Site of Scientific Interest) and part of the Norfolk Lowland Valley Fens international SAC (Special Area of Conservation). Francis showed that all the recent work has impressively increased biodiversity, including many flowers and types of butterfly. Although the future is uncertain, particularly in terms of funding, it is still a site with great potential.
Patrick showed that Christmas chrysanthemums bring life and vibrant beauty to a home at the darkest time of the year.
Sheringham Stroke Support Club meets fortnightly on a Wednesday afternoon at Anchor Close Sheringham 2pm for 2.15pm star until approximately 3.45pm.We each bring modest raffle prize & we all win a prize (no money involved). We run from March to June & then September to beginning of December. Stroke survivors & carers are welcome & currently come from Sheringham, Cromer, North Walsham Aylsham, Holt & Little Snoring.
Our Lunch Secretary, Dave Vickery thanked Francis for his very interesting talk. Our next meeting at The Links Hotel, West Runton, will be on Tuesday 2 April, when our speaker will be Mr Stephen Scott-Fawcett, on the subject of “Antarctica now and in the future”.
In addition we try to squeeze in a couple of summer tea parties at a hotel. We subsidise taxi fares up to 30 miles & carers do not pay a membership fee. The others pay £10 each term to cover hire of premises &refreshments plus speaker fees.
If you are a retired or nearly retired professional or businessman and would like to join us at one of our future meetings, you will be warmly welcomed. Please contact our lunch secretary Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or visit our website www.candsprobus.club for more information.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Most people are now aware that when they offer a new home to one of our cats and kittens, they will have been to one of our vets for a health check, been neutered, if old enough and this has not already been done, been vaccinated and chipped. Vouchers will be issued to one of our vets for them to be neutered if they are not old enough to be done. They also leave with four weeks free pet insurance which they will be given the opportunity to continue. This is especially important for older cats as some companies will not cover them. We cannot advise people whether or not they should continue with the company concerned but indicate that the four-week period gives them the chance to compare with other companies before making a decision, if they wish to continue insuring their new family member. We do, however, point out it is important when making comparisons, to make sure they are looking at similar levels of cover. It is also important to look at the small print to see what is being covered for the level of premium being quoted. For instance, some will cover an illness up to a fixed amount each year, while at another level the problem will be covered however much it may cost. In all instances, companies will not cover existing conditions and there is also usually an excess payable (again this may be a one-off payment or could be for each illness covered). You may decide not to take out insurance on your pet but do please consider how you will pay for any treatment which may be required either from illness or an unfortunate accident. Unfortunately, we cannot help with this.
Veterinary medicine has come a long way in the last few years, not least in the treatment for fleas, worms, ticks etc. Gone are the days when it was necessary to struggle to get your much-loved companion to allow you to pop a pill down its throat. Nowadays there are spot on treatments readily available to cover all eventualities, for those of us with cats unwilling to suffer this indignity to their sensibilities. Although the treatments are available in different combinations there is usually one to suit their particular needs. Please, however, do discuss this with your veterinary surgery, as they are the only people who can advise you which treatment will be suitable for your pet.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

Debra, originally from London, relocated to Norfolk in late 2017, working for firms in Norwich and North Walsham before joining the Clapham & Collinge team and has quickly built up a loyal client base and professional reputation with the local independent estate agents.
Debra said “It is a really exciting time for me to be joining the team. I am looking forward to helping expand the Residential Property client
She said ‘YES’, of course!!! In case you were wondering about the marriage proposal that appeared in issue 406, the Sheringham Independent is delighted to announce that she said yes. The she in question was Rachel Toogood, the proposer Sven Radcke. Rachel told us, “We live in Putney, London. Sven is German and I’m British (from Kent). He’s lived in London for 5 years and we met 3 years ago on a dating app (tinder). He is a rower so loves everything water - hence why he loves Norfolk, and I love being in nature and detoxing from the big smoke - so Sheringham is our haven.
base by ensuring the delivery of a bespoke service, for both existing and new clients, thus making Clapham & Collinge the clear preferred choice in North Norfolk!
Clapham & Collinge have a dedicated team of property experts who are able to provide you with all of the necessary information, support and legal advice on property transactions.
If you are looking to buy or sell your property and would like a no obligation quote please call our team today on 01692 660230 or 01263 823398. Appointments available at our North Walsham, Sheringham offices or Norwich offices.
“I said yes of course :) after 3 wonderful years together we are very excited about the next chapter of our lives. My family and I have been coming to Sheringham for many years - it’s my favourite place, and now extra special to us as a couple.
“After Sven ‘popped the question’ we enjoyed an afternoon tea and stay in the Blakeney hotel. It was idyllic waking you to see the beauty of the quay. I can’t wait for many happy more holidays in Sheringham as husband and wife. Hopefully one day our children can enjoy the carnival and enjoy a walk up Beeston Bump as we do.
We wish them all the best for a happy life and many more returns to North Norfolk.

John Stainer (1840-1901) was an English composer and organist, including at St. Pauls Cathedral, London. His oratorio ‘The Crucifixion’ is amongst the most popular of all English choral works and portrays the events of Good Friday.
Scored for Tenor and Bass soloists, mixed choir and organ, this meditational oratorio contains recitatives, solos, rousing choruses and congregational hymns. The centrepiece is the evocative anthem “God so loved the world”.
The first ever performance of this work was at Marylebone Church in 1887. It is an oratorio that has stood the test of time and has been regularly sung at churches during Passiontide. It was first sung at St. Margaret’s Thorpe Market in 1997.

Museum of the Broads re-opens for 2019!
First highlights revealed for Holt Festival Music, poetry and comedy in first announcements for North Norfolk’s premier arts festival
New Holt Festival artistic Director Anwen Hurt has announced the first highlights for the 2019 festival. Now in its eleventh year, it’s one of the East of England’s most anticipated events. Each July the festival sets the charming North Norfolk Georgian country town alight with performers, musicians, art exhibitions and literary events.
Catfield Station
The Museum of the Broads opens for the 2019 season on Wednesday 27 March and this year commemorates the 60th anniversary of the closure of the Lost Railway of the Broads.
A number of you use the A149 on a regular basis, but did you know that up to 60 years’ ago, part of it was a railway line? The line started at Great Yarmouth Beach station which was opposite the Imperial Hotel in Great Yarmouth. It connected the Broads with the Midlands and many holiday makers arrived by train for their holidays. Potter Heigham even had its own halt just for the hire boat clients!
The Museum of the Broads is commemorating this line in 2019 with a special exhibition focusing on the story of the railway. The exhibition will include items from Barton House Railway, the M&GN Circle, the 32A Model Railway Club, and local collectors. If you like anything to do with steam or trains, then this is one for you!
Georgie Fame
Local audiences and cultural tourists flock to the town to enjoy the delights on offer.
What’s more the Museum will be running its popular Easter Trail during the school holidays with prizes for those who complete the trail. Such great fun!

East Anglian Air Ambulance launch 24 mile trek challenge as part of campaign to become 24/7
East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) has launched a brand new 24 mile or 24K trek challenge as part of its campaign to become a 24/7 service and is encouraging people who are ready to take on a challenge to sign up.
part in a challenging and fun event, we can guarantee it will be one not to miss!” To book your early bird tickets or for more information visit www.trek-24.co.uk.
Fairtrade for Sheringham
The event, which is called Trek 24, is to be held in North Norfolk and will take place on Sunday 8 September during National Air Ambulance Week. Groups and individual participants will have two exciting challenges to choose from :
Fairtrade for Sheringham would like to thank everyone who supported the two 'Big Brew' coffee mornings during Fairtrade Fortnight as we celebrated 40 years of the Traidcraft Family.
• A 24 mile route starting south of West Runton and ending at Holkham Hall • A 24k route starting in Cley and ending at Holkham Hall
As a result of the two events a total of £313.70 will be sent to the charity Traidcraft Exchange.
For participants taking part in the 24km route, early bird tickets cost £20 with a minimum sponsorship requirement of £200. For participants taking part in the 24 mile route, early bird tickets cost £25 with a minimum sponsorship requirement of £250.
In addition a further £123.30 of goods were sold on the Fairtrade stalls. Traidcraft Exchange continues to support people in many countries to earn more from their hard work so that they are better able to protect their families from the harsh effects of poverty.
Trekkers will receive a packed lunch, refreshments on route, a glass of bubbly (or soft drink alternative) and a hot meal at the finish line, as well as a medal to celebrate the completion of the challenge.
We would like to thank and acknowledge the support give by both Tesco Sheringham and Sainsbury Sheringham for generous donations of Fairtrade goods. Barbara George
There will be seven ‘uplift stations’ along the way with refreshment stops and cheering squads to keeping trekkers refueled and motivated. Early bird tickets will be available until midnight Sunday 2nd June and are sold on a first come first served basis.

Catrina Miller, Events Manager at East Anglian Air Ambulance, said: “We are delighted to officially launch our brand new event Trek 24 in support of our campaign to become a 24/7 service. Currently our operation runs from 7am until midnight, meaning there is a 7 hour gap in air ambulance coverage in the East of England. By extending our flying hours round the clock, we estimate that we could be there for up to 600 more patients every year.”
Dear Margaret,
I came to Sheringham with my tools, a few clothes and the only guitar I have left, lonely, alone and nursing an inconsolable sense of loss. Since arriving here last summer to work, the people of this little sea-side town, of which very few people outside of Norfolk have heard, have treated me with openness, honesty and kindness, both Shannocks and newer arrivals. I am Welsh and so am familiar with this social divide between indigenous people and incomers and the various ways in which it manifests itself. I am tempted to add that at least here you don't have the language barrier to contend with but having tried to converse in English with some of the older fishermen I am not so sure that you don't! It is now three years since my world was turned upside down and largely thanks to the sense of welcome and decency which I have felt since coming here, I am finally beginning to come to terms with my new status and condition. Work has helped of course, it always does, there is something pure and untainted about physical labour and the company of men who live that way. Just wanted to say thanks to someone and this seemed the appropriate way. Richard Evans
To become a 24/7 service we do however need to raise an additional £1m a year and we have launched Trek 24 to help us work towards achieving this annual target. Whether you want to support our 24/7 mission or just take

WEYBOURNE WI LEARN ABOUT THE BETHNAL GREEN DISASTER
Ladies & Gents Hair Designers
At the March meeting of Weybourne WI, Susan Parry spoke about this tragic event.
Plus new Nail Bar Gel overlays, manicures etc
During WW2 the station was used as a bomb shelter. It had 5,000 bunks and could accommodate 7,000 people.
On 3 March 1943, an air raid siren sounded at 6.17 pm. At 8.27pm, a nearby anti-aircraft battery fired 60 rockets. The sound caused panic and a crowd of 1,500 people surged down the station steps. A woman with a small child slipped and fell and a human domino effect began.
20 Beech Avenue, Sunway Park Sheringham NR26 8NS
01263 822838
An off duty police officer arrived at the scene, assessed the scale of events and sent a message for help. Despite heroic efforts, 173 people died and 90 more were injured. It was the greatest single loss of civilian life in WW2 and it later transpired there was no air raid on the East End that night.
Winston Churchill banned media coverage of the event, as considered it would be bad for public morale. There was a huge ‘cover up’ about what had actually happened, but soon after the tragedy, handrails were installed and the steps were painted white.
Susan had taken a particular interest in one person who died that night, Sarah Taylor, and had researched her family history. Sarah’s daughter also died.
In conclusion, Susan talked about her membership of the White Chapel Society and their involvement with the Stairway to Heaven Memorial Trust. After many years of fund raising, a memorial has been erected to those who lost their lives.

Sheringham Dementia Friendly Community
Sheringham Dementia Friendly Community continues to work hard with the local organisations to ensure we can make all aspects of the community as dementia accessible as possible.
Our community building signage project is an example of this with the Lighthouse now having in place dementia accessible signage. The Town council have also agreed to incorporate this into the Community Centre as have St Peter’s church.
Projects such as this are only possible from the money we receive in grants and donations and our own fundraising.
WINDOW & DOOR REPAIRS UPVC, Aluminium & Timber
SDFC were therefore very pleased to receive £300 from the Masons in Sheringham and also £100 from Jimmy and Pauline Wegg who celebrated their diamond wedding and donated to SDFC rather than receive presents.
Glazing, Replacement of Locks, Hinges, Handles, Letterboxes, Patio Wheels Conservatory Roof Replacement, Double Glazed Units, & Cat Flaps We also supply & fit UPVC Windows & Doors, Garage door replacements & repairs Call Chris: 01263 550013 01692 620014 or 07900 265995
Donations such as this play an important role in funding all our activities and we are very grateful for them.
10 April at the Salvation Army Hall at 7pm is the AGM of SDFC and is a good opportunity to find out what we have been doing over the last year and our plans for the future. If you would like to be involved in any way we would love to see you.
Back by popular demand is our Moon Memory Walk kindly supported by Sheringham Carnival. Start getting your human and canine teams together for the Friday evening of 24 May and why not enter the same team into our SDFC Quiz at the Two Lifeboats on Wednesday 22 May 7.30pm . It’s always a good night and exercising that brain is the best way of reducing your risk of developing dementia.

Members of a Philatelic Society obtain their stamps from many sources but, perhaps, most often through stamp dealers.
Italian Gin Tasting £20 ppn including antipasti platter - Book Now
At the meeting on Monday 11 March, we heard what it is like to be on the other side of the transactions!
Tuesday 23rd April
Tony Hender, of Arun Stamps, came to share with us ‘The Joys of Stamp Dealing’. Tony had started collecting stamps, as many of us have done, during childhood. As a young adult with new responsibilities, he began to sell some in order to have enough money to enhance his collection. Despite having a demanding job, he gradually developed this side of his philatelic life, eventually going fulltime into the world of stamp dealing. He specializes in GB stamps and sells mainly at stamp fairs, some of which he now organizes as well. He told us of some of the pitfalls awaiting the unwary dealer such as fakes, forgeries and, sadly, theft. Tony had brought along a few stamps to test our knowledge of stamp values, stressing the fact that a stamp is only worth what others will pay for it and this depends upon supply and demand.

The next meeting, on 8 April, at West Runton Church Hall at 7.30pm, will be a display of Belgian stamps, brought to us by Peter Watts of Norwich. New members are welcome. For more details ring Gerry on 01263 579529 or Jim on 01263 721043.

Ruth Grindrod brought some of her work to give a presentation to North Norfolk Photographic Society on 6 March.

Voices of Spring
A review of the concert held at St Andrew’s Methodist Church on Saturday 23 February
Ruth took early retirement from her career in education to move to Norfolk and to pursue her passion for landscape photography.
A delightful selection of seasonal music performed by Amanda Faye (soprano) Libby Faye (recorder) with Cedric Lytton accompanying and on recorder.
More often than not, Ruth chooses coastal scenes for her dramatic images, all produced with subtlety and a style much her own.
Winter Sunset - Senja
Scotland (including especially the Isle of Harris) Ireland and Norway feature – Ruth has a particular love of the coastal scenes at Harris, though she also enjoys the rivers and broads closer to home.
Ruth likes to be alone when photographing. She says “I like to concentrate on the picture I am creating. I spend a lot of time wandering, just looking and investigating alternatives.”

Pieces included a beautiful rendering of ‘Solveig’s song’ by Grieg, ‘When daisies pied’ by Dr Arne and ‘Linden Lea; by Vaughan Williams.
Some vocal gymnastics were heard in Mozart’s ‘Alleluia’ and a peaceful ending finalised ‘You raise me up’ by Lowland/ Graham. Sullivan’s ‘Lost Chord’ provided a rousing end to the performances. Amanda’s voice was so fluent and clear it was like a breath of fresh spring air.
The concert was preceded and ended with two hymns, a closing prayer and benediction by Minister Sharon Thraves. The retiring collection was in aid of church funds.

Aylsham Heritage Centre
The Heritage Centre in Aylsham is open again for the 2019 season with a brand-new exhibition called ‘Aylsham Pubs and Inns’ which looks at the history of Aylsham through the many pubs and inns which have traded in the town.
The exhibition is based on the new publication recently produced by the History Society called ‘A New History of Aylsham Public Houses’ which builds on the original research of Elizabeth Gale. There was so much interesting information in this book that a full-scale exhibition has been possible.
The exhibition details the general history of all the 30 plus pubs which have traded in the town at one time, and links these to other aspects of the town’s history, such as the railways and the wherries and mills. Our first Children’s events of the year start in April. If you have children who have been inspired by the Great British Sewing Bee, why not come along to the children’s sewing workshop which will teach them the basics of hand sewing and give them the opportunity to make an Easter Bunny finger puppet £5 per child. We are very pleased to welcome back the mini – monsters on Friday 12th
April – with a chance to get up close and personal with lots of different creatures and insects - £6 per child. Booking essential as places are limited.
Visit www.aylshamheritage.com to book.
We are also continuing our walks in the town from Bure Valley Railway to introduce visitors to the history of the town. Keep an eye on the website www.aylshamheritage.com for more information or why not become a Friend of the centre to receive regular updates.
we would love to have you join our friendly bunch of supporters! You can pick up an application form from the centre, or email us on aylshamheritage@gmail.com You can also enrol online at www.aylshamheritage.com.
I Couldn’t Possibly Say
When you hear that a Member of Parliament Has been caught, ahem, ‘in flagrante’, Many will delight at his downfall, But I couldn’t possibly say! At times it is perfectly obvious, A star’s ‘assets’ got her in a play. Many will openly criticise, But I couldn’t possibly say!
When a felon evades facing justice, There are those who will shout out, “Foul play! He should be hung, drawn and quartered!” But I couldn’t possibly say! If a ‘Celebrity’ abuses his ‘stardom’, And bullies to get his own way, His fans will give him plenty of grief, But I couldn’t possibly say! If one maintains one’s discretion, Then no one can turn round one day, And try to sue you for libel. That’s why I couldn’t possibly say! Frances Wraight

Sheringham Golf Club Open Day
When, in 1891,the local Upcher family bequeathed the land north of the Weybourne Road for the formation of a golf course, they surely couldn’t of imagined how their generosity could have spawned the thriving golf club that now sits on the west side of the town.
Over the past 128 years the course and club house have changed out of all recognition. With this in mind the club have realised that although, geographically, it represents a large part of Sheringham, there are many residents of the town and surrounding areas who have never visited the club. Hence on Sunday 14th April from 10 am-4 pm they are extending a warm welcome to everyone, young and old to experience everything the club can offer.
There will opportunities to have a quick lesson with one of the pros and take them on at “The Dartboard Challenge” or just relax in the extensive club house ,that is available for function hire. All this and a free burger thrown in!
If you like what you see ,there is an opportunity to join the club with their ”Get into Golf” membership that introduces you to golf at a level that is not so daunting as a full membership.
Gather up friends and family and find out what the real Sheringham Golf Club is about. 128 years has been too long!
Spring March for Cancer Charities Success
The organisers of the ‘Spring March for Cancer Charities' sponsored walk in aid of Cancer Research UK on 9 March wish to thank everyone who took part in any way in an emotional but memorable day.
They would like to thank all the individual sponsors for being so generous with their donations. Blickling Estate, National Trust, looked beautiful in the sun after the storm clouds miraculously rolled away at 11.30am, the start of the event.
The wind was fierce but it didn't deter the walkers and wheel-chair participants. There was a great feeling of camaraderie, love and joy in doing something positive to try and eradicate this group of diseases.
New friendships were made and old ones renewed. Family members and friends travelled from far and wide to unite in one goal of beating cancer.
The total raised for Cancer Research UK so far is £4400.
Thank you from Angela Hunter and Judith Banks.
Laura Holland, local Fundraising Manager for Norfolk said " What a wonderful achievement by the organisers of this event. They worked extremely hard to pull the event together. Their fundraising and those who took part will support vital research into cancer. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them and all those who took part for supporting Cancer Research UK".
