Proposal unveiled for £4.15million Cancer Centre at Cromer Hospital Macmillan Cancer Support invests £2.2 million to support growing number of people living with cancer in North Norfolk.

A £4.15million proposal to build a state-of-the-art cancer care and support centre at Cromer and District Hospital has been unveiled today. Macmillan Cancer Support has been working with Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to develop proposals for the centre.

In the 2015 local cancer strategy, potential demand for cancer services within the Trust was forecast to increase by over 200% over ten years.

Currently most people from the Cromer area have to travel to Norwich for treatment and the new centre will enable more people to access cancer treatment and support closer to home.

Easter Fun at Holt Country Park

This month the picturesque Holt Country Park will host several fun-filled activities for children, run by North Norfolk District Council’s countryside team.

North Norfolk District Council is hosting an exhibition by Norfolk painter Leslie Nockels, with her work on display at its offices in Cromer.

Cromer-born Leslie trained at the Norwich School of Art and West of England College of Art in Bristol (now both universities), graduating in Sculpture, and returned to Cromer in 1976. After taking time out to bring up her two children, fifteen years ago Leslie decided to take the plunge and become a full-time artist. Ever since that day she has been working from a 1870s railway carriage in her garden.

Her work aims to capture the natural beauty of Cromer and the surrounding area. She regularly paints Cromer Pier and the town’s lovely coastline but in this First Floor Gallery exhibition, Felbrigg takes centre stage. The last three autumns found her painting waves of colour inspired by sunlight bursting through the swathes of autumn leaves such as the ‘Victory V’ plantation of beech trees in the Great Wood at Felbrigg. This large Felbrigg ‘Victory V’ painting was chosen for a heritage exhibition at Norwich Castle last spring.

The exhibition runs until April 19 at NNDC’s Holt Road offices. The First Floor Gallery is open to the public 8.30am-5pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays; 10am-5pm on Wednesdays; and 8.30am-4.30pm on Fridays.

A Council spokesman said “The council seeks to offer free opportunities to local artists to display their work in the well-lit gallery, giving staff and visitors the opportunity to see a variety of work. Six exhibitions are held annually”.

A broad range of activities will include an Easter Treasure Hunt and a Woodland Activity day – providing something for every youngster.

The park will play host to an exciting Easter Treasure Hunt for children of all ages on Tuesday, 16 April and will see children exploring the ‘jewels of the woods’, focusing on the beautiful creations of nature.

In addition to the treasure hunt there will be other fun activities such as Easter themed crafts and face painting. There will be two sessions, one at 10am to 12pm and the other at 1pm to 3pm, both cost £4 per child, with face painting at £1.50. Parents must accompany children throughout.

Holt Country Park will then be the centre stage for a Woodland Activity Day on Thursday, 18 April. For £10 a child, your youngster can leave their parents at home and join our ranger team for a day of fun filled activities in the woods. The children will learn a wide range of useful skills from den building, wildlife identification, survival skills, orienteering and craft making, running from 10am to 2pm.

Next of Kin Appeal - Sheila Sherwood Police are appealing for help to trace the family of a woman who died at her home address last month.

As we have now collected all the money raised at the Mannington Hall Fun Day last year and with the ongoing help from by ten other Lions Clubs in Norfolk we have now reached our target and are now going to present a cheque for £6,500 to the Jenny Lind Children’s Hospital. This is the total of our joint fundraising over the last eighteen months to purchase a portable ECG machine for the Hospital.

74-year-old Sheila Sherwood who lived at an address in Music House Lane in Norwich died on Monday 18 March 2019. There were no suspicious circumstances and despite carrying out extensive enquiries no next-of-kin have been identified.

The cheque was presented at the beginning of the month.

Anyone with information relating to Sheila should contact the Coroner's office in Norwich on 01603 276493.

We are still helping other local charities and in this fundraising year under the current president we will furnish a new Parents’ Room at the Jenny Lind. Parents of very sick children need a quiet, comfortable space of their own in which to relax at a time of very great stress and often sadness.

Before giving your consent, it’s really important to know what to look for. The purpose(s) for which you are allowing your personal data to be used must be clear. If there is more than one purpose, then you must be able to agree to each one separately. Your consent must be given freely which means you should never feel under pressure to give it.

Winter 2018/19 is now behind us and the forecast for the past three months, which took a different line to many, turned out satisfactorily.

March is going out with its best spell of a changeable month and this may scrape into the first few days of April but thereafter it will become unsettled and often cool or cold.

Significantly, your consent must be an affirmative action such as ticking a box, providing a signature or even agreeing verbally. Either way, it must be something you do because doing nothing is not giving consent and cannot be assumed as such.

It won’t be until about the last ten days that we start to get a regime that will have an increasing amount of fair weather but this will be in a changeable package with average temperatures and will go on to about the middle of May.

You should also be reminded that you have the right to withdraw your consent at any time and this should be as easy to do as giving it. Often an ‘unsubscribe’ link is provided for this purpose but beware this action will rarely delete your details from the database, to do this you must ask separately.

As the sun strengthens and the air is often unstable, thundery activity will be a further addition to this period.

My final message is this : before giving consent, be absolutely clear what the requester is going to do with your personal data and if you are not comfortable with it, don’t give it. Never forget, your personal data belongs to you and no one else, so be careful who you give it to.

What do you need to do first when someone dies? Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr Solicitors

I am often asked what needs to be done as a first step when a family member or loved one dies.

Obviously, it depends on the person’s circumstances as to what are the top priorities, but it goes without saying that the first thing that needs attention is the funeral. The funeral director will deal with the arrangements, but it is worth checking the Will to see if there are any specific funeral wishes. This can be as simple as a preference for burial or cremation but often there is more detail such as where the funeral should take place, form of service, choice of hymns and music, where the remains are to scattered or interred, and sometimes very individual requests. The death must be registered before the funeral can take place. This is usually done by a close family member at a registry office of the Norfolk County Council. There are, of course, rules. You will need to give details of their place and date of birth, their occupation and all the names, by which they (and their widow or deceased spouse) have been known, It is important to make sure that the house is secure and insured. Sadly, burglaries do take place so it can also be a good idea to take items of sentimental or financial value elsewhere for safekeeping. Often elderly

people under-insure their house and its contents, so do check the level of cover. Sometimes the security arrangements are insufficient to meet the insurance company’s requirements, so do not overlook this. After 60 days most insurance companies impose conditions and restrict cover on empty properties. If this is a worry, we can undertake property checks and have useful local reliable contacts and knowledge. There are then the practical matters to deal with such as ensuring that household bills continue to be paid and that the house is kept warm enough so the pipes do not freeze and burst or other problems arise.

If the person has left a Will, the solicitors holding it will need to see the death certificate and have the written authority of all the executors to release it or copies of it. An executor’s authority arises from the will and so exists immediately from the death. A Grant of Probate is often needed to “prove� that the executor(s) have the legal power to administer the estate. If a person has died without a Will they are “intestate� and no one has authority to deal with anything until the Grant of Letters of Administration is issued by the probate court. However, practicality must prevail and

arrangements can usually be made to keep things ticking over until either the grant issues or the nearest family members entitled under the intestacy rules get matters moving. Probate solicitors are here to help when somebody passes away. Their experience is not just in dealing with and advising on the legal process but also the practical and family side of matters.

It’s the first time NNDC has helped rear kids since the Bagots – which are listed as ‘vulnerable’ by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust – first arrived in 2016. The 12 new arrivals are equally spilt, with six boys and six girls.

Walk along the windswept shore, see the flotsam at high tide, Sea birds wheeling overhead, the horizon miles wide, The pier now silent, ghostly dark, a lifeboat poised to serve, These are there for all who will and with open eyes observe.

The herd was originally brought in to help keep the cliff at Cromer clear, but the Bagots have since caught the eye of Norfolk Wildlife Trust and Suffolk Wildlife Trust, who have bought and borrowed some of the herd for habitat management on their land.

How wonderful to walk the lanes when hoar frost is around, The dead cow parsley, leafless trees, are now with brightness crowned. This land and coast a paradise with otters, seals and hares, Norfolk in the wintertime will blow away all cares.

The goats have also become a tourist attraction, and the 12 baby Bagots are sure to prove a hit with the public when they head to Cromer later this year.

More than 200 knives seized during police week of action

More than 200 knives have been seized during a week of action aimed at reducing knife crime.

Norfolk police was one of 44 forces involved in Operation Sceptre between Monday 11 March and Sunday 17 March – a national campaign which took place to highlight the risks that carrying a blade can bring, as well as targeting offenders who use and carry knives.

During the week officers held a knife surrender initiative where members of the public were able to hand over knives at Public Enquiry Offices across the county without fear of prosecution.

A total of 237 knives were handed in, including machetes, samurai swords, daggers, hunting knives and flick knives.

Officers also carried out high visibility patrols targeting those who carry knives. There were 114 stop/searches with 26 knives seized and 11 people arrested for possession of a bladed article. Four of those have since been charged. They are :

KELLING PROBUS CLUB

We met as usual this month at the Dales Hotel in Upper Sheringham, on this occasion for our Annual General Meeting.

A delicious lunch was enjoyed by 17 members and the usual fellowship and friendly banter made it even more enjoyable.

After the meal, Chairman Mike Clayton called us to order and we approved the minutes of the 2018 AGM. Treasurer Tony O'Shea reported that the Club’s finances were sound and that no increase in subs was needed.

Secretary Ken Murray gave a report on a very successful year with some excellent speakers and the usual quality of cuisine being maintained.

Chairman Mike thanked both the committee and members for supporting him throughout his year and said he had enjoyed being in the chair. He stressed that the Club would not be a success unless we were able to recruit new members as inevitably we lose a couple of members most years.

The Chairman of North Norfolk District Council will launch himself out of a plane in tandem with a professional sky diving instructor in aid of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).

EACH is soon to replace its Norfolk hospice at Quidenham with a purpose-built facility in Framingham Earl, known as ‘The Nook’.

The two-mile high tandem skydive will see Cllr Nicholas Coppack in free fall for 50 seconds at speeds of more than 120mph. The jump will take place on 4 May at Beccles Airfield.

The charity relies on voluntary donations for the majority of its income and each year needs to raise more than £6 million from fundraising and over £4 million from its shops. It has around £1.6 million left to raise of its £10 million public appeal to build the new hospice in Framingham Earl.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We have mentioned many times that all our cats and kittens are either chipped with micro-chips purchased by the branch, before leaving us for their new homes, or were chipped by previous families. When they leave us for their new homes, we register the chips on-line with the microchip registering company. We always ask the new owner to provide at least one telephone number and an e-mail address if they use a computer. From past experience the more ways of contacting the owner the company has, the more chance there is of contacting them should their beloved pet go missing and is subsequently ‘found’. It is also important to ensure this information is kept up to date when people move or change the contact details. We often see appeals on websites etc to find the owner of an animal that has been handed in, either to a vet or a rescue charity, which has been chipped but the owner cannot be contacted from the information held by the relevant company holding the animal’s details. In some instances, although chipped, the chip has never been registered so there are no contact details available (this happens more often with dogs than cats).

One such instance is Pogba, a lovely young male cat, recently handed into our care as a stray. He was handed in from another area to that where he was registered as living but, unfortunately, we received no response from his owner via the contact details held by the company concerned. Pogba has not been registered as missing so he will now visit our vets for a health check and vaccination before being put up for adoption. Please always ensure that your details are registered and are up to date with the relevant company to avoid the heartache of not being reunited with your pet.

Community charity Groundwork Norfolk is working with Tesco to help mark the supermarkets 100th birthday by offering communities in the UK the chance to bag their share of £100,000. As part of the supermarket’s anniversary celebrations, community organisations from across the East of England are being invited to apply for their share of the cash. In Norfolk the Bags of Help Centenary Grant is open for applications. Throughout July and August the first of two special funding rounds will concentrate on groups delivering health and wellbeing benefits, with a particular focus on groups tackling cancer, heart disease and diabetes, in line with the supermarket’s National Health Partnership. Applications are open to all community projects bringing benefits across the region, with Tesco colleagues involved in shortlisting three applications in each area. Customers are then invited to vote for which group they’d like to receive grants of £25,000, £15,000 and £10,000, casting their votes using blue tokens handed out at checkout points. Another voting round will launch in November, with even more projects sharing in the cash over the course of the year.

Endurance runners deliver sterling performances in national competition North Norfolk District Council-run scheme continues to prove successful

North Norfolk District Council’s Sporting Centre of Excellence (SCOE) scheme continues to go from strength to strength, with some of its near-100 participants performing well in national cross-country races this weekend.

Each race in the English Cross-Country Schools Championship, in Leeds, had 350 athletes from across the country taking part. Hattie Reynolds (Junior Girls) finished 14th – only a few seconds short of qualifying for the England team.

Brad Keay (Junior Boys) also did well, finishing in 66th position in his race and being the first Norfolk athlete to cross the line. Meanwhile, Tia-Lilly Crane (Junior Girls), Grace Buchannan (Intermediate Girls) and Henry Jonas (Junior Boys) all achieved creditable mid-field finishes.

In total, there are 93 students benefiting from the SCOE scheme at the moment, and they are taking part in cricket, netball, hockey and endurance running.

The SCOE programme has been a huge success and is now in its third year. It enables children aged between 11 and 14 to benefit from specialist coaching, funded by NNDC and supported through the council’s sports and leisure team. Participants enjoy the high-quality facilities available at Gresham’s School. Parents and schools are being encouraged to start thinking about making nominations for next year’s programme, which kicks off with selection trials in September. Cllr Hilary Cox, NNDC Portfolio Holder for Leisure, said “This is an ideal opportunity for local families to anticipate the nomination list for September, based on the excellent results of this year’s achievements. Well done to all those who are taking part in whichever sport they have chosen – this is an excellent scheme.”
