A Better Life for Ben
Just4Children are fundraising for a life changing operation called SDR (Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy), which will give Ben, aged 9 from Sheringham, the chance of a better life.
Ben and his identical twin Alex were born prematurely at 29 weeks. Both boys were seriously ill and Alex passed away after 4 days. Ben remained in Neonatal care for 10 weeks. He was diagnosed with Spastic Diplegia Cerebral Palsy at 2 years old.
As he grows the muscles in his legs become tighter, causing discomfort & muscle spasms, hindering his mobility and independence. Ben is now a full-time wheelchair user.

Dear Margaret,
Firstly, a huge vote of thanks from Judy Oliver and myself to the voters who kept their faith in us in the elections on 2 May. I have served Sheringham South for eight years, first with Rhodri Oliver and then with Judy Oliver. Over that time I believe that we have achieved much - from the MUGA and the first skateboard park, to a new Splash and the second skateboard park, from tackling the Shannocks problem to trying to address the parking problems at the Primary School and helping get Prom improvements. On the way, we have enjoyed the company of a lot of great people, and enjoyed meeting many of our residents at our monthly surgeries. Judy and I wish Sheringham South's two new District Councillors well for the future in solving current and future problems. Kind regards, Dick Shepherd, 15 Waterbank Road, Sheringham

Dear Margaret,
On Wednesday 1 May I unfortunately tripped and fell in The Boulevard. I would like to say a big thank you to the lady who came over the road to help me. This happened almost outside Crossways Nursing Home and the owner and staff looked after me and even wheeled me home in a wheelchair. This was very much appreciated. My special thanks go to Graham Trivett who took me to Sheringham Surgery to see the nurse and for checking on me each morning My injuries are healing and I was very lucky not to break anything. A Better Life for Ben
WINDOW CLEANER
Continued from front cover... Ben has been accepted for an operation at Great Ormond Street Hospital called SDR. This will significantly improve his quality of life by removing the spasticity and helping to manage the discomfort he lives with on a daily basis. It will increase his mobility and allow him the opportunity to perform the daily activities most of us take for granted. We have exhausted all non-surgical options and now need to have SDR which will provide a long term solution to manage his spasticity.

Tesco Community Involvement
A big thank you to all our customers who have supported all the fundraising held in store. We are astounded by your generosity.
For our own charity partners, Diabetes UK, British Heart foundation and Cancer Research, we raised £6,651 last year.
I know that the groups who have been in our foyer raising awareness and funds have also raised an amazing amount between them. There have been 53 groups/charities using the space during the year. All have been well received and supported by you.
Local groups can apply to the Bags of Help Scheme to be awarded either £4000, £2000 or £1000. The voting by our customers takes place over two months. Over the year this means that 18 worthy causes benefit. We have given out £42000 to local causes via the scheme over the year. The three groups to vote for during May and June are the Upper Sheringham Bell Appeal, The Belfrey CEVA Primary School and the Sheringham Christmas Lights – please support them, it means a great deal. To raise funds for your group via this scheme please visit tesco.com/bags of help or ring the dedicated helpline 0121 237 5780. This year, to celebrate 100 years of Tesco, there are two occasions when up to £25000 will be awarded.
We have had several groups of school children and clubs raising funds by bag packing for our customers. Again, you have been so generous, giving support to them.
Several of our staff are taking part in the Race
for Life in May to support Cancer Research.
As well as fund raising, we have donated over 1200 meals to local charities by offering our short shelf life food to charities at the end of the day. If you know of a group who may benefit from this, please contact the store and we will forward the details. Unwanted food is offered to staff and any remaining is sent for animal feed so we have reduced food waste to the bare minimum.
We have taken an active part in many of the town’s groups and events, especially Sheringham Dementia Friendly Community, Sheringham Plastic Aware,Sheringham Carnival etc. We have supported the fancy dress, raft race, 3 peaks challenge, 40s weekend, Viking festival, Christmas lights etc. We have had Ceroc dancers, The Black Dog Music Project, police awareness campaigns at the store.
The food bank collection point has been well supported all year round and especially so during December when we had a weekend dedicated to the collection. An amazing amount of food has been donated.
The Cats Protection collection point is also well supported in store. We have a collection point for unwanted carrier bags near the check outs, you can also deposit clean, stretchy plastic there too. We also have a used battery point available. During the school holidays we have had a colouring table available to make shopping more enjoyable for children and less stressful

Clapham & Collinge Solicitors tackle Dementia Awareness Q&As - Lin Whitehead dementia that once they have been diagnosed there are no longer able to make or change their legal documents, however this is incorrect.
Dementia currently affects 850,000 people in the uK and it is thought that 225,000 people will develop dementia this year. that’s one every three minutes.
At Clapham & Collinge we play our part in making Norfolk a more welcoming and helpful place for people living with dementia by holding regular dementia awareness sessions and training workshops to help raise awareness, understand what it’s like to live with dementia and help create a dementia friendly community.
With Dementia Action Week 2019 taking place in May, we have taken the time to answer some of the most frequently asked questions which arise during our training sessions.
Q. what is dementia? Dementia is the term which describes different brain disorders that trigger a loss of brain function, such as memory loss, confusion and problems with speech and understanding. There are numerous conditions which fall under the heading of ‘dementia’ and it is important to know the difference between them as each exhibit different symptoms so will be treated differently. We have highlighted the most common forms of dementia below. Q. Can someone still make legal documents if they have been diagnosed with dementia? It is often a concern for someone living with
As mentioned above, dementia and the severity of it can vary between each person, however provided a person has the mental capacity to make legal documents, they can do so despite having been diagnosed with dementia. It is a principle of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 that a person it not to be treated as unable to make a decision unless all practical steps have been taken to help them to do so.
The legal test for capacity to make a new Will or Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) is decision specific and applied on a case by case basis. This means that whether an individual has capacity to make a new Will or Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) will be very much dependant on their personal circumstances at the time of giving the instructions. As capacity can fluctuate with a condition like dementia, people are said to have good and bad days, so it may be that more than one meeting is needed to determine if the person has the requisite capacity, and it is not uncommon for a solicitor to ask the person’s GP to assist, should they have any concerns. Q. How can i get involved with Dementia action week 2019? Dementia Action Week is an initiative set up by the Alzheimer's Society
which aims to encourage people to take action to improve the lives of those affected by dementia. https://www.alzheimers.org.uk/get-involved/ dementia-action-week.
Q. How can i learn more about living with dementia or helping a loved one who is living with dementia? At Clapham & Collinge we hold regular dementia awareness sessions and training workshops to help raise awareness and help to create a dementia friendly community. We are part of the Sheringham Dementia Friendly Community and Norwich City Dementia Action Alliance.
All of our lawyers are ‘dementia friends’ and so are experienced, knowledgeable and approachable to advise you the documents you may need if you have been diagnosed with dementia, or can provide you with advice and guidance on steps which may need to be taken if you have been appointed as an attorney for someone living with dementia and are unsure on your role. For more information on the legal services Clapham & Collinge offer or to book an appointment please contact our dedicated Client Relations Team today on 01692 660230. Appointments available at our North Walsham, Sheringham and Norwich offices.

The Carnival was seeking one Attendant and found that in Alisha May Redgrave. Alisha is 16, still at school, but has worked at Fat Ted’s in Sheringham for a year.
She has loved the Carnival ever since she was a little child and her favourite float was always the Carnival Queen – just watching them gave her a feeling of being happy and enjoying herself.
Meet people interested in all aspects of keeping tortoises healthy & happy. Information & advice will be available from members of the Tortoise Circle of Friends (Norwich & Lowestoft Areas), including examples of suitable nourishing and healthy weeds and plants.
She is a very enthusiastic person with a lot of personality.

Organiser Steven Burbidge said “We are really excited to be holding our ever popular village Open Gardens again in 2019. We didn’t hold the event last year as having all put so much time & effort into the SOS campaign, we felt we needed a break. This year there will be an exciting combination of new gardens opening for the first time, plus there will also be more established gardens that have opened before. This is our biggest fundraising event of the year, and all money raised goes to support the future of our much loved community shop. 5DLVLQJ IXQGV IRU &URPHU +RVSLWDO )XQG SDUW RI WKH 1 1 +RVSLWDO &KDULW\ DQG &URPHU &RPPXQLW\ DQG +RVSLWDO )ULHQGV

Sheringham Horticultural Society
Macmillan afternoon strawberry tea with the Broadland Ukes
The time is approaching for you to nominate a front garden that you believe deserves recognition.
The weather has been very warm, dry and then the Bank Holiday weekend brought cold tempera-tures and rain. How will this affect and frustrate keen gardeners?
Macmillan Cancer Support North Norfolk are holding an Afternoon Strawberry Tea with Music supplied by the Broadland Ukes. Please come along and support this fundraising event. Everoyone is welcome - either make up a table of family and friends or come along on your own and we will make up “Friendship Tables” …. This is a ticket only event so please book early to ensure that you get a ticket!
For many years Sheringham in Bloom and the Sheringham Horticultural Society have walked the highways and byways of the town looking for that outstanding garden. It was decided, a couple of years ago, that you could help us in the task by nominating gardens that you believe are worthy of this award and recognition.
In June we would like you to look out for those front gardens and gardeners who are worthy of be-ing Sheringham best kept front garden.
There were many recommendations last year which was a great time for gardens caused by a wet winter and hot summer.
Judging will take place in early June so we need entries in by end of June, first week of July. Please send these to joanthame123@gmail.com. Thank you
SATURDAY 22nd JUNE in St Andrews Church Hall, Cromer Road, Sheringham. Doors open 2pm. Music from the Broadland Ukes 2.30pm till 3pm, Afternoon Strawberry Tea served 3.15 to 4.15pm. SHERINGHAM STROKE SUPPORT GROUP
On 1 May we were entertained for half an hour - all 17 of us - stroke survivors, carers and friends who support our group – by a local magician called Robert Rathbone.
As the audience, we took part in his close up magic show. Robert’s son took photographs for his father's Facebook page and all the other places modern people use these days!
After the magic and applause we had an enjoyable question and answer session with
Robert about his magic.
He wanted to be a magician from the age of five years and his grandad played a part in this, followed by his friendship with the late Paul Daniels.
Our free raffle, which means we all go home with something we didn't bring, took place over tea and biscuits! This week I won an old Bygones book written by Freda Starr.
Freda’s parents came to Cley from Lakenheath

in Suffolk in 1906 to run a large general store with a warehouse in the High Street until 1937. Freda and her sister then ran it until the 1970s. It is a history book with such detail and shows how Freda's memory paints us a picture of how village life in Norfolk was, including a once a year trip in a pony and trap to Norwich to buy Christmas stock. One of our stroke survivors, Gerald from Holt, remembers being an errand boy at this shop.

‘Wally the Elephant’ celebrated St. George’s Day with Scouts at Beeston Hall School
West Runton Scout Group played host to this year’s St George’s Day Celebration on behalf of North East Norfolk District Scouts, and by kind permission of the School Headmaster, Fred de Falbe the Celebration was held on the Beeston Hall School Sports Field and in a blaze of sunshine proved to be a memorable and enjoyable event for all.
Civic Dignitaries, parents, friends and supporters saw 500 Scout members aged from 6 years onwards - Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers, Adult Leaders and Supporters all assembled at Beeston Regis Holiday Park clifftop field. 3.
West Runton Group formed the District Colour Party this year and led the procession along the cliffs, through Laburnham Caravan Park to the Cromer Road and into the school, their flags displayed by a good breeze which gave maximum colour.
Twelve Scout Groups provided standards for each of their Sections, together with the
light on smaller charities that need more publicity.
The Celebration Service on the chosen theme of ‘Bones’ was led by District Scout Chaplain, The Rev’d Canon Paul Cubitt - Vicar of North 6. Walsham, Edingthorpe, Worstead and Westwick (Benefice) and Priest-inResidence at the Parish of Our Lady and St Joseph, Sheringham and Cromer, The Rev. Tim Bugby (Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham).
The gathering was then treated to a very original presentation by West Runton Scout Group members about their village history which began with the Scouts ‘sailing’ by in a crabber (mounted on a trailer)! They then gave a 2. very animated potted history of the palaeontology behind, and discovery of, the fossilized skeleton of a steppe mammoth, found on the beach after a heavy storm in 1990 ... the Scouts named him ‘Wally’!
The audience sang and cheered as the performance unfolded. Scouts, Cubs and Beavers together with their Leaders all renewed their Scout Promises.
5.
District’s Explorer Scouts and the parade was admirably supported by Gt Yarmouth Sea Cadets, our guest Marching Band, led by S/Lt (SCC) Lydia Chilvers RNR OiC.
The Celebration Service was opened by the new High Sheriff of Norfolk, Clare, the Lady Agnew of Oulton - born in the windmill at Cley and brought up on the coast in east Norfolk, Lady Agnew said she was delighted to be able to return to the area and in particular to Beeston Hall School where her two children, Madeleine, 23, and Edwin, 19, had been pupils. Lady Agnew sees 1. her role for the year as supporting charities and their volunteers, and she will be particularly trying to shine good
Following the National Anthem and the presentation by District Commissioner Paul Henriksen of the St George Flag to 1st Hoveton & Wroxham Group as the exemplary Group of the year, the young people and their Leaders paraded back to their starting point.
11
West Runton Scout Group decided to support Beeston Hall School’s nominated Charity for 2019 and therefore the collection was this year in aid of East Anglian Children’s Hospices (EACH) for their NOOK Appeal.
The Headmaster, Fred de Falbe, said afterwards “It was lovely to be able to welcome so many to our school to share in what is an important community event. My thanks go to District Commissioner, Paul Henrisen and West Runton Group Scout Leader, Helen Cardani for organising this so brilliantly, and also two long-serving members of the Beeston Hall staff, Mike and Angie Cole – Mike has

Salmon jerky with caper, shallot and dill mayo
This is a lovely summer recipe with a beautiful taste and texture, perfect for enjoying with Pat dry with a clean kitchen towel. Position a clean wire rack over a crisp glass of white on the lawns.
We are lucky enough to be able to serve afternoon tea and dinner outside under the shade of the horse chestnuts and sycamores, which is wonderful now that the weather is heating up.
Afternoon tea runs throughout the year between 2 and 4.30pm, and dinner is served 5 – 6 (early evening menu) and 6 – 9.3pm (a la carte). Come in and see us! Call 01263512412 to book your table.
Serves 2
ingredients • 550g of salmon fillet, skin-on, boneless • 100ml of soy sauce • 1 tbsp of lemon juice, freshly squeezed • 1 tbsp of maple syrup • 2 tsp freshly ground black pepper • 1 dash of tabasco • 2 tsp liquid smoke (I source ours from award winning butcher H.G Graves, also available online or from Tescos) • 100g of coarse sea salt • 4 tbsp mayonnaise • 1 jar of Lilliput capers • 2 tsp chopped dill • 1 banana shallot finely diced
a baking tray, sprinkle the salmon pieces with coarse salt on both sides and let it 'dry' in the fridge for 2 hours.
Preheat the oven to 75°C. Brush away all the salt from the salmon pieces.
Cover the wire rack with parchment paper or a silicon mat and place over a clean baking sheet. Lay the salmon strips out spaced evenly on top.
Cook the salmon until it reaches 75°C. Lower the heat to 60°C, steadily cooking the fish for about 4 and a half hours in total, flipping halfway through. The final jerky should be crispy outside and chewy and sticky inside.
For the caper, shallot and dill mayo. Mix all ingredients in a small mixing bowl, folding until it is evenly mixed
CROMER AND SHERINGHAM PROBUS CLUB
Have you ever wondered about the origin of those goats which are seen every year munching grass on the cliff slope at Cromer, a little to the west of the pier? On Tuesday 7 May we found out!
Mr Mark Frosdick, Animal Control Assistant with North Norfolk District Council, gave us a most interesting talk entitled ‘Goats on the Slope’. The project started in 2015 when the problem of dealing with overgrown vegetation on the slope threatened to be very expensive.
Remove the pin bones and silver flesh from the fillet but leave the skin on. Wash thoroughly then pat dry.
Place the fish in the freezer for 30 minutes before you begin, this makes it easier to slice. Once firm, cut into slices approximately 1cm in thickness.
Mark suggested putting goats there to deal with the vegetation and was permitted to try the idea out. By 2017 the project was so successful (and economical compared with normal grass-cutting) that the area for the goats to feed on was tripled. The species used is a rare species, the Bagot goat. (The name derives from the Bagot family, to whom some of these goats were given by people returning from the Crusades.) The animals are hardy (there are also some Bagot goats in Cumbria) and they managed very well during the long snowy winter of 2018 – they are wintered further west along the coast and the costs of this are met by the sales of merchandise. There is also a breeding programme, and a number of billies are on loan to the Norfolk Wildlife Trust. The National Trust is also showing some interest! The aim is to make the project self-sustaining, and an increasing merchandising programme is enabling this; furthermore, in 2019 it is hoped to develop a website. There was a good time of questions and answers after the talk, and Mark was thanked by our chairman, Jack Broughton.
Mix the soy sauce, lemon juice, maple syrup, freshly ground pepper, pepper sauce and the liquid smoke and whisk well.
Coat the salmon strips in the bowl of marinade, transfer to a sealable bag and allow to marinate for at least 12 hours in the fridge.

Artists from North Norfolk get set to invite the public into their studios Hundreds of artists from across the region are preparing to throw open their studio doors to the public as part of Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios 2019.
artists, 7 locations.
The free event will see more than 430 artists taking part across 250 venues throughout the county opening their doors to the public to exhibit, sell and talk about their work and practice. In North Norfolk, 75 artists and nine groups will be taking part.
Alongside the Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios fortnight, North Norfolk artists will be hosting three taster exhibitions at The Old Workshop Gallery, Corpusty (11 May to 9 June), Cromer Library (2 – 30 May) and North Walsham Library (13 May – 10 June).
The event, which has firmly established itself as one of the biggest open studio schemes in the country, will celebrate its 25th anniversary this year. The 16-day celebration of Norfolk’s artistic community runs from Saturday 25 May to Sunday 9 June 2019.
As well as the hundreds of artists taking part, numerous Norfolk schools will be exhibiting in the scheme. Art Trails will also be in place across the county, allowing audiences to visit a number of artists in a particular area, stopping at studios and local attractions along the way.
Throughout the duration of Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios many of the artists will be holding additional events, demonstrations and workshops. Artists taking part are working in a diverse range of art forms and techniques including mosaic, ceramics, printing, jewellery, textiles, painting, papercutting, glass work, sculpture and wood turning. Internationally renowned artists as well as artists new to the scheme take part each year.
Ros Dixon, Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios Administrator, said: “It’s wonderful to think that Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios will be in its 25th year in 2019. It goes to show that the scheme has a timeless appeal for both artists and visitors. “It’s not just about buying and selling work directly from the artist, which of course is one of the appeals, but it also offers artists the chance to meet and talk with people who are interested in their work.
“Many artists also enjoy being able to meet Artist Shauna Richardson and work with other artists, which for some In North Norfolk five (CATERS) has resulted in longterm collaborations and school groups are taking friendships. Being able to see artists at work part (Antingham & Southrepps Primary School, Hindringham C of E Primary School, Walsingham in unique working spaces will continue to fascinate and appeal to C of E Primary School, Kelling C of E Primary people, whether the School and Blakeney C of E Primary School) artist has been taking and six art trails have been organised by artists part in Open Studios participating in the scheme. These are the Cromer for 25 years or whether Art Trail, Happisburgh Art Trail, North Walsham it’s their first time.” to Southrepps Art Trail, The Smallburgh Small Art Trail, Wells-next-the-Sea Art Trail and 10
and all details, including studio opening days, directions, art trails and additional events and demonstrations, can be found in the Norfolk & Norwich Open Robert Downie work in progress Studios brochure and on the scheme’s website.
North Norfolk artist Robert Downie said: “I really look forward to Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios, as over the fortnight I have this once-ayear opportunity to meet with lots of old friends together with new visitors to my studio. It can be hectic but is always stimulating. I learn so much from just listening and chatting to visitors, it plays a significant role in inspiring the future direction of my work.” Brochures can be picked up from Tourist Information Centres, libraries, cafes and various art venues across Norfolk.

It all started when...
... hosting a dinner party for friends and family, the conversation steered towards the food. After many kind words and compliments, they said, “We could eat your food every day”.
With our busy lifestyles and the frustration of ‘we never have time to cook each evening after a busy day with work’, the conversation continued. We want a meal that’s quick and convenient but doesn’t compromise on nutrition or taste? Light bulb moment! If on days like that, you could just open your freezer and discover a library of carefully-prepared meals waiting for you to heat up in a jiffy… No need to plan ahead!
Because the freezer would immediately lock in the incredible flavours and nutritional goodness of each dish, naturally reducing food waste by keeping their food ‘fresh’ for up to six months.
Once we had nailed the recipes, we started delivering our freshly frozen meals directly to food-loving folk across Norfolk. Simply

Flying the (Blue) Flags for North Norfolk’s fabulous beaches
As quickly as the overwintered hogs are being released, more are coming in.
all six beaches have retained their prestigious gongs for another year. it’s official! north norfolk continues to have some of the best beaches in the country.
Pictured is Theo, another underweight hog found out during the day. He is gaining weight and loves tucking into his cat food at night.
Unfortunately this is the season for strimmer injuries and my first one came in this evening (13 May). I will not post a picture as it is to distressing, one of his ears is nearly off and the eyes are so badly injured that if he survives, he will be blind, I'm not expecting him to live as it's such a shock to the system.
The beaches in Cromer, East Runton, Mundesley, Sea Palling, Sheringham and West Runton have all been awarded prestigious Blue Flags for another year – and that means the 45-mile North Norfolk coastline is home to half of all the Blue Flag beaches in the east of England.
The awards are given out only to those beaches that have the highest quality of water, facilities, environmental education and management, with superb levels of cleanliness and safety. It means the hundreds of thousands of residents and visitors who visit North Norfolk’s beaches each year can be sure they are enjoying top-notch destinations.
Please before strimming or mowing take a few minutes to check long grass for sleeping wildlife. It could just save a life. Thank you
North Norfolk is the only district in the county that has been awarded any Blue Flags this year.
As well as the Blue Flags, the beach at Wells, which is owned by the Holkham Estate but jointly managed by NNDC and the RNLI, has won a Seaside Award, which guarantees visitors a clean, safe, attractive and wellmanaged coastal stretch.
Cllr Sarah Butikofer, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “This is fantastic news and highlights once again what fantastic beaches we have in North Norfolk.
“It is testament to all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes all year round to keep our beaches in tip-top condition and guarantee their safety and cleanliness.
Allison Ogden-Newton, chief executive of Keep Britain Tidy, which runs the Blue Flags scheme, said “The success of the beaches in reaching the very high standards demanded by both awards is testament to all those who have worked so hard to protect and improve our beaches – from beach managers and volunteers to local people and businesses. When you enjoy a trip to a beach flying an international Blue Flag or Seaside Award, you know you are on one of the safest, cleanest and very best in the country.
www.rosevillapublications.co.uk
20
There is evidence that the awards attract more visitors, with the number of people visiting the district’s beaches rising from 100,000 a year to 400,000 since they started being awarded Blue Flags.

Rob demonstrated a push net for catching shrimp, the children saw a live plaice as well as learning about local marine wildlife.
Children from a Norfolk primary school have been learning about marine protection on their doorstep after their teacher was inspired by a community workshop looking at the role of the Cromer Shoal Chalk Beds Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ) locally.
The workshop, held last Autumn in Trimingham, was run by Alice Tebb and Hilary Cox MBE from the Agents of Change project and was attended by Jenny Lumb, a year 3 and 4 teacher at Mundesley Junior School. The aim was to find ways that the community and local area can benefit from having the MCZ on its doorstep and how local people might support it.
Known to local fishermen as the ‘chalk bed’, Cromer Shoal is thought to be Europe’s most extensive chalk reef – it stretches for more than 30km along the coast. Divers from the MCS-led national volunteer dive project, Seasearch, have recorded more than 120 species of seaweed and other plants on the shoals and more than 350 species of fish and invertebrates. The area has been a Marine Conservation Zone since 2016.
Jenny Lumb, created a number of themed lessons
“It has been great to engage the children in marine environmental issues and help them realise that their actions can affect the sea near them as well as the whales and turtles they have seen in the media, said Jenny. “So many of the children and their families - and us teachers! - were unaware that there was such a special Marine Conservation Zone on our doorstep before we started the project.
Sheringham fisherman, Jim Lingwood and retired Cromer fisherman, William Cox MBE went into the school to introduce the children to local fishing methods and what it’s like to be a fisherman. Jim showed the children what fishing gear looked like and how it worked whilst William strung netting to a crab and lobster pot (called a parlour pot) and told the children stories of local fishing history. Fishing is an important part of local culture and history. It was also a great opportunity for the children to appreciate where food comes from and to support the local fishing industry.
Jim Lingwood got involved with the children in a question and answer session - “I’d ask them things like ‘what do you think I do?’ and ‘how do you think I go out to sea?’ They get really into it. One lad asked if I had ever caught a shark. I said I’d seen a whale but I’ve never caught a big shark! I

feel they came away understanding a little bit more about their local small-scale fishing industry.
The children learned about how they could be ocean-friendly by going out on a beach clean with 2018 MCS Volunteer of the Year, Michelle ‘Shell’ Duddy, who lives in Mundesley and regularly runs four other beach cleans in Norfolk.
“It was a great opportunity to show the younger generation how important it is to keep our beaches clear of litter and fishing gear to protect marine life and keep our marine environment healthy, said Shell. “They all enjoyed the day and collected almost 30 kg of rubbish of the beach.
Hilary Cox from the Agents of Change project also went into Mundesley Junior School to explain to the children why Cromer Shoal Chalk Beds MCZ is such a positive thing for the area.
She said “This is a truly exciting project to enable schools to integrate with local issues and encourage everyone to learn more about what lies just beneath the waves on our shoreline..
As well as writing thank-you letters to all the experts, crucially, they children wrote letters to their parents using persuasive writing to encourage them to use less plastic. As part of their maths lesson, they had to survey their parents to ask them what they knew about the MCZ and discovered only 16% had heard of it!
The Agents of Change project is keen to hear from local teachers, educators and/ or parents interested in getting the Cromer Shoal Chalk Beds MCZ, local fishermen, fishing culture and the marine environment into local schools.
