RNLI at the Royal Norfolk Show helping to save lives

RNLI volunteers were at the Royal Norfolk Show. The Community Safety Team and RNLI Education spent two days in the Broads Village, working with the Broads Authority to inform visitors on how to stay safe near water and help others who find themselves in trouble in the water.

The volunteers were talking to children, parents and grandparents, informing them how to stay safe near water - sadly around 150 people drown each year and 50% of these had no intention to go into water when they left home. So the first message they got over was FLOAT FOR YOUR LIFE - if you fall into water, fight your instinct to swim until the cold water shock passes, float to live. Continued on page 4...

With the help of RNLI volunteers and Broads Rangers they were shown what a throw bag is and how to get help by phoning 999 and asking for the Coastguard then how to use the throw bag and have a go.

REAP for Young People at Cromer Pier Theatre

Throw Bags are at all Broads Authority moorings on the broads - a lot of people had seen them but didn’t know what they were for or how to use them. After their talk and practice throwing they were happy to use them and help save a life.

the reaP careers drop-in service is coming to Cromer Pier theatre on sunday 28 July.

People were very interested in the throw line, not only people who own boats but those who live by or near water - these people were given information on how to obtain throw lines. This puts more aids near water to save lives.

The Raising Employment Aspirations Project, known as REAP, is a new project funded by the North Norfolk Youth Advisory Board. It enables Lola Stafford Consulting Ltd to support young people aged 13-19 (up to 25 if there is a learning disability) in North Norfolk to get the best possible start to their careers and grow their confidence.

Robert Mann, Community Safety Officer at Happisburgh RNLI, said “It was a very worthwhile two days. The number of people of all ages who were aware of our FLOAT campaign was very pleasing and shows the message is getting out and hopefully the number of drownings will fall. The large number of people trying the throw lines who would be happy to use them to help people in trouble, will also help save lives”.

The project is available through the local schools and colleges and is also hosted in community venues providing a drop-in service which includes finding out about employment or further education opportunities plus help with CVs, application letters and interview skills.

Jim Page, Education Officer at Cromer RNLI said “Being able to interact with so many people was the best way to get our message over,

Jacqui Starling of Lola Stafford Consulting Ltd says “We are delighted that Cromer Pier Theatre has offered to host the service. It’s such an iconic venue central to the Cromer community and offers us the chance to deliver a drop-in session which promises to inform, inspire and motivate young people needing some extra help to make career choices. We share the vision of the North Norfolk Youth Advisory Board to empower young people’s ambitions and help them reach their full potential”.

The event is free and runs from 10am to 3pm on Sunday 28 July. There will be lots of additional information from organisations that support young people PLUS we have some fun activities, opportunities for speed interviews to fine tune your responses and a card game to reveal your hidden strengths!

Norfolk primary school’s wellie-wall wins RHS Best School Garden and Gold Medal at the Royal Norfolk Show

Aldborough Primary School in North Norfolk won Best School Garden 2019 and an RHS Gold Medal for its garden at the Royal Norfolk Show. Up against stiff competition from much larger schools, both public and state, Aldborough’s wellieinspired creation wowed the judges, who were all from the Royal Horticultural Society.

The RHS says that school gardens are a huge part of their push to encourage young people to enjoy the benefits of gardening. There were eight school gardens at the Royal Norfolk Show, each measuring three metres by three metres. Coast Arts 2019

Sheringham Art Exhibition

Back by popular demand this year, two Sheringham artists join forces again to show their art work at Odd Fellows Hall, Sheringham.

Shipwreck - a mixed media open art competition

The annual Coast Arts open art competition has become one of the key elements of the festival.

The exhibition runs from Saturday 27 July to Sunday 4 August inclusive.

Encouraging artists from across the spectrum, the competition inspires both professional and amateur artists to create unique works for display, for sale and for fun!

Mel Ashcroft exhibits her whimsical cat illustrations along with her people studies, her colourful beach characters and much more. Her work in acrylics and watercolour will definitely put a smile on your face.

The theme for the 2019 competition is Shipwreck – in particular the legendary Fernebo wreck.

Competition entries will be shown in a pop-up exhibition on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 October, 10am-4pm, in the Education Room at the RNLI Henry Blogg Museum, Cromer.

The entries will be judged by two professional artists and the £100 cash prize will be awarded at the COAST Celebration & Exhibition Opening on Fri 25 Oct at 5.30pm.

David Barber has been a professional artist for over 40 years and has owned galleries. His subjects include wildlife, landscapes and Bruegelesque style oils, with many pieces held in private collections worldwide.

Art Exhibition and Demo at Red Lobster Gallery

On Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 July Red Lobster Gallery at 25 Station Road, Sheringham are looking forward to welcoming Trudi Baker to exhibit and demonstrate her artwork between the hours of 10am and 4pm. Trudi has always been inspired by the natural world and in particular animal instincts and their behaviors. Through her skills as an artist, Trudi has been focusing on capturing the quirky and elegant characteristics of animals by her free flowing painting style. Trudi’s initial concept was to create beautiful unique pieces that can work in today’s interior environmentst. Background colours vary from the subtle to the vivid, to suit individual tastes and interiors.

Honning her skills working with multimedia, layering and manipulating surfaces to create tension, depth and feelings in her work. Her own sense of colour and style add a playful and fun element to the individual pieces. After slowly layering the enamel elements, Trudi finalises each piece by encasing the canvas in resin.

The overall effect is a glazed finish with new depths in every viewing.

Weather with Ned Nimbus

Certainly no repeat of summer 2018 and at times the air masses will be quite volatile.

Looks like high pressure is going to continue to be limited so July to September will continue in the same vein as the previous three months, where any fine weather did not get traction and soon changed.

Thornage Hall Independent Living 30th Anniversary

The learning journey begins at birth.

As a parent, my hope is that my children will continue to progress and enjoy their learning into a place of work, enabling them to live independent lives, and follow their own path to happiness. But for those born with a learning disability, these most fundamental of expectations are dramatically restricted. For the last few months I have been working with a Norfolk based charity which has been breaking the mould in providing diverse living, working and learning opportunities for adults with a learning disability.

In June this year Thornage Hall Independent Living celebrated 30 years since it opened its doors. In that time the charity has done much to improve aspirations for those with a learning disability and for their families.

Based in the heart of North Norfolk, just a five minutes’ drive from Holt, the charity provides supported living for 27 adults, each of whom hold individual tenancies.

Support is on hand to ensure that they can live independently and that they can pursue working and learning activities of their choosing, and there is quite a choice. A further 30 adults, known as day service users, also travel to the site each week to take part in the working and learning activities.

The charity was formed following the donation of the Hall itself and a 70 acre parcel of land by the 22nd Baron of Hastings, whose second son, Justin, was born with Downs Syndrome. Justin attended a Steiner school in Hampshire and it is this philosophy which provides the cornerstone for the charity.

Rudolph Steiner was the founder of biodynamic farming and of Anthroposophy, a philosophy which holds that ‘a perfectly formed spirit and destiny belongs to each human being’. Everybody who works at Thornage Hall upholds this philosophy, ensuring every adult who lives there, or who attends the day services, are supported to

pursue their own destiny.

On 18 July the charity is holding a Support Worker recruitment open day. This is part of an ongoing commitment to ensure sufficient skilled and experienced staff are available to meet the future aspirations of its tenants and day service users.

The 30th anniversary has been marked by the opening of a new activities center and fully accessible communal space, alongside the launch of an ambitious £1m fundraising appeal to build Orchard Lodge. The new building will house four flats, all built to full accessibility standards for those living with a learning disability.

A £1m appeal to provide accessible accommodation at a north Norfolk charity for adults with learning disabilities has been launched.

As Thornage Hall Independent Living celebrated its official 30th birthday, the latest £400,000 communal meeting and activity room was opened by the charity’s patron, Lady Philippa Dannatt MBE.

Lady Dannatt, who becomes Lord Lieutenant of Norfolk in August and the first woman in the county to hold the post since it was created during Henry VIII’s reign in the 1540s, unveiled a commemorative plaque.

Gregories Barn will provide a multi-use space for the charity’s 27 tenants and about 30 day service users. Now the charity needs to raise about £1m to build Orchard Lodge, which will provide four fully accessible accommodation units. As many of the tenants are facing increasing mobility issues, more specialist accommodation is needed.

Thornage Hall, near Holt, was given by the late Lord Hastings in 1987 with about 70 acres of land. An appeal was made in that year to raise funds to convert the grade 2 listed hall, which dates from 1482. A total of £600,000 was aised within months to convert the medieval hall into a purpose-built home and the charity was

formally established in 1989. Over the past 30 years, the number of tenants has expanded from an initial dozen to the current 27 we have living with us today.

In the past five years, the charity has invested more than £1m in new homes for the tenants, facilities and also up-grading heritage buildings. Today, the charity, which encourages tenants to have an active role on the 70-acre bio-dynamic farm and also work in the wider community, welcomes adult day service users from across Norfolk. With a sixacre orchard and five acres of market garden for horticultural crops, it supplies its tenants with home-grown food from the bio-dynamic produce. It has achieved the highest official ratings for its farming standards, especially caring for wildlife, and Thornage has been given a “good” rating in its latest Care Quality Commission inspection. Bio-dynamic produce is also supplied to Michelin-starred hotels and specialist outlets and farm shops too. To further reduce our environmental footprint a reed bed sewage system was installed on the site more than 25 years ago.

Where there’s a Will there’s a War? Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr

With the number of Wills being contested in the High Court up 25% on recent years, it is more important than ever to secure your last wishes to avoid claims upsetting your legacy plans. The surge in claims is put down to increasingly complex family relationships. The landmark 2017 judgement in Ilott v The Blue Cross overturned accepted legal thinking. In that case Melita Jackson left most of the £486,000 estate to animal charities, but her estranged daughter

Heather Ilott made a successful claim against the estate, arguing that her mother had not made reasonable provision for her.

The Supreme Court criticised the decisionmaking process of the lower Court of Appeal in the Ilott case and made some useful points. The Court of Appeal had given little weight to the testator’s clear wishes; which was wrong. While the wishes can be overridden, they are part of the circumstances of the case and must be taken into account. The Court of Appeal thought that charities have no ‘needs’ and therefore, unlike a person, they are not prejudiced if their benefit is reduced. For all Inheritance Act claimants, apart from spouse, ‘need’ is a necessary but not sufficient condition for an order. Awards are limited to maintenance (rather than a lump sum) and so, had an award by way of housing, been appropriate, the right order would be likely to have been a life interest, rather than an outright sum. Cases since Ilott, such as Thompson v Ragget [2018], show that these principles are not being consistently applied by the Courts. As ever, the decisions are specific to the facts but Orders for capital sums by non-spouses are still being made, despite all the guidance of the Supreme Court. Reasons given include such an Order allowing all parties to move on from the estate litigation with all links being severed and the estate being substantial so there was ‘enough to go round everyone’. The closeness of the relationship between the deceased and the beneficiary of the Will has been held to make

Classic Car Rally at Gresham

Following on from their very well supported and successful event in 2018, the Friends of All Saints Gresham are running another Classic Car Rally and Craft Fair on Gresham Village Park and in the Village Hall (NR11 8RT) on Saturday 20 July.

There will be a wide variety of craft stalls (both inside and outside the Hall) demonstrating the skills and talent of local craftspeople including handmade jewellery, art, home furnishings, kitchen items, children’s books, handmade cards, pottery, needlework, woodcraft and basketry.

Hot lunches, strawberry teas and homemade cakes together with tea coffee and cold drinks

will all be available throughout the day. The Broadland Ukes will be playing between 2.15 and 3.30pm and amongst other entertainment, there will be a Bonanza Raffle, face painting and games and quizzes for children (of all ages!)

The Village Hall will be open from 11am, with cars welcome on the Village Park from 10.30am. Judging of the ‘Best in Show’ will take place between 1pm and 2pm, with the prize ceremony, taking place in the Village Hall at 2pm.

As with last year funds raised from the event will go toward the cost (over ÂŁ100,000) of urgent repairs to the 1000 year old, round

Reepham Classic Car and Bike Festival This Year we Celebrate les Automobiles Français

Now in its 6th year, Reepham Classic Car and Bike Festival has become one of Norfolk’s most successful and attractively located shows, with over a hundred Classic cars and motorbikes displayed in the beautiful Georgian Market Square. Taking place on Sunday 29 September, between 11am and 4pm, we will be focusing on French classics to feature the glorious history of these, sometimes eccentric but always innovative, vehicles.

French manufacturers have a tradition of developing distinctive designs for mass manufacture - the Citroen 2CV and DS, Renault 16 and 5, Peugeot 404, and Simca 1000 are well loved examples. There were more exotic and rare cars too, such as models from Bugatti, Delahaye and the

towered, All Saints Church Gresham. This very historic church building is in dire need of roof and tile repairs, a new rainwater disposal system, floor and wall repairs and the repair, including releading, of its windows.

The Friends’ principal aim is to preserve the Church building and its amenities for future generations, of villagers and visitors, and to fit the building for an enhanced role within both the immediate and wider Community.

The Church has been an integral landmark within the landscape for 1000 years already and the Friends hope that supporters will join with them to ensure that the building continues to play an active and growing role for the next 1000 years.

Legendary guitarist Gordon Giltrap to perform at Sharrington

Sharrington Village Hall is thrilled to announce a concert by the internationally acclaimed acoustic guitarist Gordon Giltrap on Saturday 24 August.

Gordon has been a large part of the music scene since the late 1960s. Many guitar legends including Richie Blackmore (Deep Purple) have cited him as an influence. Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin) and Pete Townshend of The Who are also admirers of Gordon’s work. In fact Pete is such a fan that he recently requested Gordon to join him for a recording session for one of the songs on the next album by The Who which is due for release later this year. Whilst influencing some heavy rock stars, Gordon's own compositions are frequently

quietly reflective and his style is unique. He was most famous in the 1970s when he toured extensively with 'The Gordon Giltrap Band' and released seminal albums such as 'Visionary' and 'Perilous Journey' from which his greatest hit 'Heartsong' was taken. Familiar to millions, it was chosen as the theme tune to the popular BBC 'Holiday' programme with Cliff Mitchelmore.

Gordon's contributions to both music and charity were recognised this year when he was awarded the MBE of which he is rightly exceptionally proud.

Sinkhole update 3 July

Anglian Water has now dug down eight metres inside the Sheringham sinkhole to reach the sewer pipe, which is significantly damaged.

The next step will be to assess the full extent of the damage and plan the necessary repair, to give a more accurate idea of timescales.

Anglian Water is continuing to work seven days a week and teams have worked longer hours in order to ensure the work is being completed as fast as possible. Once the repair is complete highways will be completing the back fill of the hole and reinstating the road surface.

The pedestrian access is now open on both sides of the road which was a priority of Anglian Water and all businesses now have access in order to be able to operate. Straits and Crofters restaurants are both now open Signage indicating the parking spaces is arriving in the town funded as a partnership between Anglian Water and Highways. The 30 minute free car parking spaces supported by NNDC are also operational on Morris Street.

Bodham and Selbrigg wind-turbine appeals update Judgment is disappointing news for North Norfolk residents

North Norfolk District Council has received the judgment of the Rt Hon Lord Justice Lindblom, who has refused the council’s application to go to the Court of Appeal regarding the way two wind-turbine planning appeals will be decided by the Planning Inspectorate.

NNDC had previously challenged the decision of the Planning Inspectorate to redetermine the Bodham and Selbrigg wind-turbine appeals by way of the written-representations procedure rather than by reopening the Public Inquiry, which it considered was contrary to the Plan-

After hearing evidence from both sides, and despite the judge finding that the Planning Inspectorate’s decisions, for the most part, were not expressed within the right framework, Mr Justice Ouseley found in favour of the Planning Inspectorate and concluded that the decision to redetermine the appeals by written representations was lawful.

NNDC had concerns about Mr Justice Ouseley’s decision, and that led to an application for permission to appeal to the Court of Appeal. The decision by the Rt Hon Lord Justice Lindblom means that the Planning Inspectorate is now able to continue the written-representations procedure for both the Bodham and the Selbrigg turbine appeals.

Cllr Karen Ward, NNDC Portfolio Holder for Planning, said “The decision of Lord Justice Lindblom is disappointing for residents of North Norfolk. “This council recognises the vital role that

renewable-energy projects can play in decarbonising the energy sector as we look to respond positively to our declaration of a climate emergency. However, it is also important that renewable-energy proposals are sensitive to the important landscape and heritage value of our district.

“In this regard, it is vital to ensure that evidence in relation to application proposals and planning appeals can be properly tested in the right forum. This council remains firmly of the view that a reopened Public Inquiry would have been the best way for the Planning Inspectorate to reconsider these turbine appeals. Whilst it is important that we continue to fight for the rights of our residents to be heard, we can pursue this matter no further in the courts so we will now move to ensuring the council can put its best case forward in the redetermination of theses turbine appeals by whatever means the Planning Inspectorate decides.”

North Norfolk District Council is currently awaiting a timeframe from the Planning Inspectorate in relation to the redetermination of the Bodham and Selbrigg appeals.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We are happy to report that the four kittens mentioned last time are now well on the way to recovery. However, a further kitten has arrived from the same site and this too gave us great cause for concern. He went straight to the vets on arrival in care and also needed an antibiotic injection, medication for his eyes, plus more antibiotics, to be given by mouth. Before leaving the surgery, he had fluids injected under the skin as he was very dehydrated. He too is making good progress. We know there are another two kittens on the site and, thankfully, they are both healthy but are proving difficult to catch. A cat trap has now been put into position to hopefully catch them. These kittens were very fortunate as without medical intervention I am afraid they would not have survived.

Last time we mentioned the role of the fosterer within the branch. However, there are many more opportunities for people to become involved in the work that we do and we always welcome new volunteers. With other commitments in their lives, most people cannot offer the same level of help that is required when caring for the cats first hand. If you have a few hours to spare there are many other roles to fill and we will try to explain over the next few issues the different ways this can be achieved.

Fundraising is one area where there are many opportunities to help the cats, by raising the money to ensure they receive the very best help we can give them while in our care. We do have a lady who organises store collections and she is always happy to hear from people willing to give an hour or two when these take place. Street collections are another area where a few hours of your time would be invaluable. Helping at one of our major sales is another way to become involved and also gives you the opportunity to meet like minded people. We are always happy for volunteers to arrange and organise their own fundraising events (Craft Fairs, Car Boots, etc) and do have some goods available for these.

Another important role in the branch is ordering Cats Protection stock from our Empawrium Catalogue for major sales. This could lead to more opportunities to be involved in other areas for ordering goods, equipment, etc, but more of that next time.

As you read this, be proud that during 2018 2019, we the citizens across the 200 square miles of North Norfolk, collectively provided emergency food for well over 3000 of our fellow citizens in North Norfolk. One third of those North Norfolk citizens you fed were 1295 children and because of you those children across our region continued to get the nourishment they need during a time of crisis for their families.

At this point some readers will be shaking their heads and talking about this unacceptable situation, which is that in 2019 we are seeing a rise of the need for Foodbanks. No-one will disagree with that sentiment, however for many, often complex reasons, this is the situation we find ourselves in right here, right now. And together we’re tackling that challenge head on.

Most of us take the food we eat every day for granted. Most of us don’t believe that we will ever be in a position where we can’t buy food for our families. But crises happen, often without warning, and ordinary people just like us – people who may be your friends, your neighbours, members of your own family, old school friends, other parents - find themselves in this unthinkable situation.

Financial crises come in many shapes and sizes, including, redundancy, bereavement, relationship breakdown, benefit delays, illness, low income during out-of-season periods, unplanned but essential expenditure and debts which can grow because of any of these things, to name just a few. These situations are often not anyone’s ‘fault’ and so there is little to be gained by trying to apportion blame. Instead, lets continue doing what we’ve done so far and support these people when they most need us to.

The RAF Radar Museum has become KELLING PROBUS CLUB yesterday’s news… wrapping chips! Kelling Probus Club held its June meeting at The Dales Hotel

In a novel marketing ploy, the RAF Radar museum has produced its own newspaper so that fish and chips can we wrapped up in it.

Upper Sheringham.

In collaboration with Ken’s Fish and Chip shop in Wroxham in the Broads, the museum is providing the printed newsprint wrappers for the takeaway service.

The newspaper includes a range of museum news and carries a voucher for a £1 off admission for visitors bringing the voucher with them to the Museum.

Museum Manager, Lynn Kerslake, advised that "we have really seen an improvement in our visitor numbers by undertaking this novel way of advertising to visitors to the Broads.

Ken's Fish and Chip shop Manager, Michael, advised “We thought this was a great idea and offers our customers something a bit different and we are teaming up with a great local visitor attraction so it’s a win win for us both! The look of surprise on peoples' faces when they see their order with the outer "news print" wrapping is priceless! Customers have even come into the shop just to get a wrapper to read!”

The “newspaper” chip paper has been designed and printed by Century Printers in Stalham.

Lynn Kerslake continued "The Museum is celebrating being open for 25 years this year and a Celebration Day is being organised for September to mark the occasion. We are continually working on developing our collection, and our Tornado cockpit will soon be available for visitors to actually sit in for the first time!

The Museum is a great place to visit for a day out in Norfolk and is fun for all the family. There are over 25 exhibition rooms as well as outdoor exhibits and over 10,000 items to view.

Members stood in silence to remember John Dunsire who died recently. A tribute was paid by John Whittington who had known him for 62 years.

After a tasty lunch Chairman Andrew Hyatt welcomed our speaker Chris Brandford who spoke on the History of Boulton & Paul engineers, founded by William Moore in Norwich in 1797, originally as an ironmongery. Soon they were making grates and stoves and selling huge ranges of goods.

In 1867 they were making wire woven fencing which became one of their major products although they were by now galvanising metal and in 1905 made 7500 miles of metal netting.

Chris then told us of the rapid expansion up to World War 1, when marine engines, prefabricated buildings and later military buildings for the war, were made in their large Norwich factory.

Next came their production of planes for the war and the famous Sopwith camel was made. When the war was over they continued to make planes and most of the infrastructure for airship R101.

The production of the Sidestrand bomber began which was a unique design and soon the first power operated gun turret was produced. At this time the company made most of the pylons for the new National Grid.

With another war starting, the production of planes was stepped up and of course so was the production of galvanised metal camps, bridges,and other items for the war.

During the 80s and 90s the company made losses and eventually parts of the company were sold to various buyers and the name died out in 2006.

Sheringham Lifeboat -

‘The Oddfellows’ B 818 Service Launch – Sunday 23 June

On Sunday 23 June the Sheringham Lifeboat was tasked by Humber Coastguard to undertake a search for a person seen to be entering the sea just off Beeston Hill to the east of Sheringham.

The lifeboat attended the scene and in discussions with HM coastguard undertook a shore parallel search as far as East Runton where nothing was found. The Coastguard then requested a creeping line ahead search to be initiated and again nothing was found.

Eventually, after a very thorough search, the lifeboat was stood down and returned to station.

Free fun for all the family at Holt Festival opening weekend

Holt Festival, North Norfolk’s annual feast of arts and culture is just around the corner and this year it kicks off with a big new family weekend of free events for all.

It's very busy here with nine different hoglets from different locations in just one week!

They are all around about 100 gms so very small and should still be with their mothers. They will be in my care for several weeks until they get to release weight. At this weight and with small teeth coming through they are able to lap some mashed cat food, but mornings and evenings I am syringe feeding them a little goat’s milk.

Please if you find some hoglets out during the day, leave them about an hour in case mum comes back, then intervene.

Starting Saturday 20 July Gresham’s Pre-Prep field in the town centre will become a hive of activity and fun between 10am and 4pm with free workshops in football, art, creative writing, song writing and street dance. There’s also an art car boot at Lees Yard giving the opportunity to buy direct from artists.

On Sunday 21 July a Street Feast opens at 12 noon in the High St followed by a family town picnic open to all on the Pre-Prep field with lots of free live entertainment.

The hog who came in two weeks ago for observation has given birth to four hoglets. Mum and babies are doing well.

Holt Festival Artistic Director Anwen Hurt said 'We really wanted to make sure that the Festival has events that everyone can attend, to include the whole town in the Festival – and the best way to do that is to make them free.’.

Huggy came in with a bad back leg injury and is on antibiotics. It will take several weeks but the swelling is slowly going down.

Focus on Sidestrand Hall Special School

Sidestrand Hall School is a complex needs special school educating over 180 children who travel in from all areas of Norfolk. Our pupils have a wide range of high needs including autism and ADHD with many having more than one condition. Some pupils board in our residential unit for one or two nights per week or in our residential ASD unit for four nights a week.

our charity shop The school is heavily supported by our registered charity with most of the money being raised via Strands our charity shop in Cromer. Money raised supports activities that enhance pupils learning and personal development such as subsidising trips, paying for visiting activities and more recently the purchase of a bus to convert to a school library. Our library was converted to a classroom when our numbers increased due to the shortage of special school places in Norfolk. We are currently raising money to buy new library books.

The low prices in Strands are appreciated by the local community – come and see!

We are always grateful to accept donations which can be dropped off at the shop and we are now able to accept electrical items too.

The shop is also the only North Norfolk drop off point for Leeway who provide specialist services to adults, children and young people experiencing domestic abuse supporting over

Raffle and tombola items for us to use at the fete can also be dropped off at the shop. Hundreds ‘go yellow’ for air ambulance

On Thursday 20 June, schools and businesses across Norfolk ‘turned yellow’ for the East Anglian Air Ambulance’s annual Get Up and Go Yellow fundraising event, which is now in its second year.

The idea is simple - wear an item of yellow clothing, bake something yellow, hold a yellow themed quiz or raffle off a selection of yellow items – anything which helps raise more money and awareness for this life-saving service.

Several schools and local businesses took part, with Terrington St Clement Community School, raising over £800 for the charity.

Barking Pre School, near Ipswich, had an extra special reason for getting behind Get Up and Go Yellow this year, after the air ambulance saved the life of one of its young pupils.

Annabel Brightwell was three years old when

she suffered a cardiac arrest at the pre-school last year.

Annabel was flown to Addenbrooke’s but continued to deteriorate on the way, requiring further medical interventions in the air, after being anesthetised at the scene so that the team could protect her breathing. Annabel received further lifesaving treatment at Addenbrooke’s before being transferred to a specialist hospital in London, where she was diagnosed with a rare heart condition.

After a lot of care, Annabel is now living a very happy and normal life. Without bystander CPR from a member of staff and quick attendance by the EAAA team and transfer to Addenbroke’s, Annabel would not have lived.

Walks for the Glaven

The Glaven Charity invites you to enjoy a choice of fundraising walks through the beautiful Glaven Valley on Saturday 21 September.

Setting off from the Art Café at Glandford - there is a walk for everyone. A 10k walk follows historic footpaths and bridal paths through the Bayfield Estate, over the Wiveton Downs to the coastal path and back. A gentler but equally glorious 5k circular walk through the Bayfield Estate crosses open farmland, woodland and wetland. Landowner Robin Combe will be on hand to talk about the local bird, insect and plant life. Families with toddlers can enjoy a gentle stroll (1K ) down to Glandford Ford, stop off at The Glandford Shell Museum and climb the hill up to

Catrina Miller, Events Fundraising Manager at the East Anglia Air Ambulance (EAAA) said “We are really pleased to see so many schools getting behind Get Up and Go Yellow as a fun and educational activity this year, and to see past patient Annabel’s Pre-school taking part as well is really wonderful and a stark reminder of why we need to raise money every day to keep our helicopters flying.

“Each EAAA mission costs in the region of £3,500 and the charity relies on the generosity of the people living in East Anglia to help save lives like Annabel’s, which is why activities like Get Up and Get Yellow are so important.

“Everybody always comments on how distinctive our yellow helicopter is and it makes us proud to see so many people getting involved – from top to toe yellow outfits to a few well-chosen yellow accessories – it’s easy for everyone to take part in this event. We hope Get up and Go Yellow will continue to grow and that we can add an extra twist for next year, to help us with our campaign to fly 24/7.”
