PLANNING APPLICATION FOR £4.15MILLION CANCER CENTRE AT CROMER HOSPITAL GOES IN

Plans for a proposed £4.15million cancer care and support centre at Cromer and District Hospital have been submitted.

Macmillan Cancer Support has been working with Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to develop proposals for the centre, which will be called the North Norfolk Macmillan Centre. Continued on page 4...

Mark Davies, NNUH Chief Executive, said “We run one of the biggest cancer centres in the country and the expansion of Cromer Hospital is a key part of our plans to provide the best care for patients with cancer.”

Continued from front cover... The plans, involving the refurbishment and extension of a disused ward, will now be considered by North Norfolk District Council. If permission is granted, building work is expected to take around a year.

Currently, Cromer Hospital provides a range of acute out-patient and day case services and has a minor injuries unit.

The trust provides acute hospital care to a catchment area of almost 830,000 people from Norfolk and neighbouring counties. The original 1930s Cromer Hospital was redeveloped at a cost of £15million in 2012 and provides a wide range of consultant-led outpatient services, day case operations and a Minor Injuries Unit open seven days a week.

The proposed centre will enable patients, many of whom currently travel to Norwich, to have their treatment and access support services closer to home.

The centre, on the site of the former Davison Unit, will include: • Six chemotherapy treatment chairs with capacity to treat up to 36 patients a day. • Three new clinic rooms and two new minor procedure rooms, creating an additional 10,000 outpatient appointments annually. • A Macmillan cancer information and support centre. • The new unit will also free up space in the main Cromer Hospital building to deliver an extra 600 surgical procedures in dermatology, urology, vascular surgery and pain management.

Sheringham Stroke Support Group

Our last meeting for the Spring session finished on 25 June with our AGM and we look forward to meeting again at Anchor Close, Sheringham at 2pm for 2.15pm start on 4 September with a talk by Keith Wills. All stroke survivors (and carers if they wish to stay) are very welcome to join us when they are able.

The majority of funding for the centre will come from Macmillan Cancer Support, which is providing up to £2.2 million and Norfolk and Norwich Hospitals Charity, which is contributing £1.5million. The remaining £450,000 is coming out of NNUH Trust funds.

However we have two treats in store because we are having afternoon tea at Sea Marge in Overstrand in July and then again in August at The Links in West Runton.

Our Chairman Harvey Pitcher told us that Sir Norman Lamb would like to be involved with our group as our Patron & so we are looking forward to his talk in the New Year.

The number of people living with cancer is growing and predicted to rise from 2.5million today to four million by 2030. In Norfolk, around 6,000 people are diagnosed with cancer each year. There are approximately 35,300 people living with cancer in the county.

Our new treasurer Rev Chris Sharp will take over from Moya Leighton who has served us well despite having health problems herself.

185g unsalted butter 200g best dark chocolate 85g plain flour 40g cocoa powder 50g white chocolate

50g milk chocolate 3 large eggs 275g golden caster sugar

1. Cut the unsalted butter and dark chocolate into small cubes and tip into a medium bowl and melt over boiling water, stirring occasionally. When melted leave to cool to room temperature. 2. While you wait for the chocolate to cool, position a shelf in the middle of your oven and turn the oven on to 180C/ 160C fan/ gas 4. 3. Using a shallow 20cm square tin, cut out a square of non-stick baking parchment to line the base. Sieve the flour and the cocoa powder into a medium bowl. 4. Chop the white chocolate and the milk chocolate into chunks on a board. 5. Break 3 large eggs into a large bowl and tip in the golden caster sugar. Whisk the eggs and sugar until thick and creamy.

Mathieu Le Gac is a French BBC journalist from Muzillac, a town on the south east coast of Brittany which is twinned with Sheringham.

Through the town’s Twinning Association he came to Sheringham in July and, with the help of Steve and Teresa Williams who volunteer at North Norfolk Railway and the railway’s newly appointed Commercial Business Manager Angela Rudd, he has joined the 350+ volunteers and full time team that operate the heritage railway where he will remain until after the 1940s Weekend in September.

6. Pour the cooled chocolate mixture over the eggy mousse, then gently fold together. 7. Reseive the cocoa and flour mixture over the mousse and fold in.

8. Finally, stir in the white and milk chocolate chunks until they’re dotted throughout. 9. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin, put in the oven and set your timer for 25 mins.

At 5.30am on Monday 15 July the Sheringham lifeboat was tasked by Humber Coastguard to undertake a search to locate a fishing vessel ‘Irene II’ broken down approximately 1 mile west and approx. ½ mile offshore of Sheringham station.

As there was a heavy swell running and the tide was on the flood, the owner opted to fasten the prow of the boat to the Cromer Lifeboat outer buoy with an anchor off the stern to secure the fishing vessel when the ebb came through.

Love for Leo

event in aid of Love for Leo. This has been organised by our friend and supporter, David Williams, who has organised these very popular events which are always very enjoyable. This event will be held at the Muckleburgh Collection at Weybourne - the main event being a ‘Who Dun It; for all to enjoy. Tickets cost ÂŁ35 per person to include entry to the Museum, a hot and cold buffet with a glass of wine or soft drink, live music and entertainment throughout the evening. There will be a bar and a raffle with extra special prizes. Feel free to come in fancy dress or 40s dress but that is completely optional, having an evening of fun is compulsory! Love for Leo was founded by partners Moss Taylor and Robina Churchyard in 2014 to raise money for children with cerebral palsy living in Norfolk and Suffolk. Cerebral palsy leaves children with varying degrees of lifelong physical disability and unfortunately not all the expensive equipment needed to improve their quality of life is available through the National Health Service, nor are some of the surgical treatments, and this is where Love for Leo is able to make a contribution towards these costs.

During the first five years £22,500 has been raised. This has been possible by Moss donating his fees from talks and bird courses and the profits from the sale of his books, while Robina has been selling homemade preserves and garden produce at the All Natural shop in Sheringham - many thanks to Jo and Mary who kindly allow her to do that. Successful tombolas during the 40’s weekends in Sheringham from 2015 to 2018, have each raised £300. Friends and local organizations have been very supportive and raised funds for Love for Leo.

Summer at Mannington

Mannington Estate is hoping to focus children away from their screens this summer to come and enjoy the great outdoors over the holidays. The estate has invested in extending their current children’s playground and also offers a Fairy Trail. The Mannington Minnows Nature Club runs every Tuesday and Thursday during the school holidays with themes such as ‘Ponds & Streams’, ‘Dens’ and ‘Pigsty Art’! relating to the cats, fund raising free goods, leaflets on cat care etc are all ordered on line from Head Office. We also order veterinary medicines, treatments, vaccines etc via our vets, from a company with whom Cats Protection has a special arrangement. Another company is used to obtain disinfectants and yet a further one holds stocks of our vaccines. These are all done on an “as and when needed� Tango, she is the oldest cat basis and each one takes very in care and is 15 little time, ideal for someone who wants to be involved with the work we do who either cannot take on an active role or who just enjoys using their computer skills.

After a few setbacks, the kittens mentioned last time are now making good progress. It is important to make sure that kittens are seen by a vet straight away when they are unwell because, being small and still having immature immune systems, their health can deteriorate very quickly. Fortunately, our fosterers usually recognise when there is a problem and can take appropriate action. As Pablo, the little kitten whose photo appeared in the last article, left for his new home, two more very young kittens arrived from the same site. All the cats on this site had been neutered last year but, unfortunately, new ones have arrived from other areas of the industrial estate and have taken up residence. None of these had been neutered, hence the kittens, so our friend who feeds and cares for the colony is now on a mission to catch these new cats and take them to Westover to be neutered. We are very lucky to have such understanding vets, both here and at the Bridge at Wroxham, as they are always willing to accept the cats at short notice. We do however, try to avoid catching the cats on days when they have a full operating list, although on the odd occasion, this has been unavoidable.

At present we have several young cats under 1 year old, ready and waiting to find loving new homes. These are not necessarily shown on our website. Brexit and Benji are a little nervous, Archie, Lena, Malcolm and Harry are full of mischief and then there is Little Joe who just loves people, is very active and gets very excited when someone new comes to see him. If you are hoping to home a young cat, rather than a little kitten, one of these may just be the right one for you.

Going On Wednesday 3rd July, Sir David, an atlantic grey seal, was released back into the North Sea having spent exactly 3 months at East Winch Wildlife Centre. He had been at the RSPCA facility undergoing treatment for an embedded frisbee cutting deep into his neck.

Our charity has been actively involved in the rescue of seals around the Norfolk coast for many years. In August 2013, we even captured an entangled grey seal on Scroby sand bank off Great Yarmouth. That mission was with help from the Caister Lifeboat Crew and we managed to cut the netting off and release instantly.

Unfortunately, calls received for entangled seals have rocketed in recent years .We attend, on average, at least one a month, often collaborating with volunteers from Friends of Horsey Seals

Walking is part of my personal and professional life, and my Mum always encouraged my trailblazing adventures.

She was a quiet, gentle caring lady, always helping others. Sadly she passed away from Vascular Dementia in December last year. Towards the end of her life, one of her favourite places was the SDFC class at the Lighthouse Church in Sheringham, where playing games and socialising with others always brought a smile to her face.

My inspiration for this walk comes from my Mum and the two most influential people in my life, my son Adam and my daughter Amie. My Mum gave me the encouragement I needed to grow into who I am, my daughter gives me independence and strength, and my son guides me through challenging times with his positivity.

Norfolk Coast Skies to Star in New Festival

The incredible dark skies and landscapes of the Norfolk Coast will be celebrated during a two week long festival this September. Hosted by the Norfolk Coast Partnership, which looks after the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), the festival will feature a range of activities run by partner organisations such as the RSPB, Norfolk Wildlife Trust, the North Norfolk and King’s Lynn Astronomy Societies.

If you have received a diagnosis of Dementia, it's important to put together a plan for your future wishes and care Our living with dementia Q&As highlight how a solicitor can help make sure plans for the future are put in place and are legally valid.

Q1. How can a solicitor help someone living with dementia plan for their future? A solicitor can help someone living with dementia plan for their future by taking their instructions for Wills, Trusts and Lasting Powers of Attorney. It is a common misconception that someone diagnosed with dementia lacks the capacity to make legal documents. Solicitors can assess the person's capacity when taking instructions for legal documents and involve GPs where necessary. If someone living with dementia does not have capacity then the Court of Protection can appoint a Deputy to manage their affairs and the Deputy can make an application for a Statutory Will on their behalf. Q2. what are lasting Powers of attorney and what do they cover? Lasting Powers of Attorney are documents which appoint people (attorneys) to deal with your finances and welfare in the event that you lose capacity. You are able to provide instructions to your attorneys in the documents or your preferences in regards to specific matters. A Lasting Power of Attorney for Property & Financial Affairs allows your attorneys to make decisions which are in your best interests in

relation to your property, bank accounts and investments. A Lasting Power of Attorney for Health & Welfare allows your attorneys to make decisions in relation to your personal welfare including your care needs.

Q3. what is a deputy and how can you become one? A Deputy is a person who is appointed by the Court of Protection to make decisions on behalf of a person who has lost capacity and cannot make or amend their Lasting Powers of Attorney. It is more common for a Deputy to be appoint to manage the person's Property & Financial Affairs as the Court accepts that in most cases healthcare professionals are best placed to make decisions regarding a personal's welfare. The application to become a Deputy is a paper application to the Court and requires specific forms to be completed. Family members/friends can be appointed as Deputies as can professionals. The Office of the Public Guardian also have a panel of professional Deputies they can appoint in complex or contested cases.

Q4. what is an advance statement and how can it help someone living with dementia? An advance statement, otherwise known as a Living Will, is a legal document which outlines your decisions to refuse a specific type of treatment at some time in the future and is used when you no longer have the capacity to make the decisions for yourself. It is a way in which to let your loved ones know your preferences regarding treatment. Living Wills are not usually as comprehensive as a Lasting Power of Attorney

Q5. what advice would you give to someone living with dementia when it comes to planning for the future? A diagnosis of dementia does not mean that you are unable to make legal documents, however it is best to make legal documents sooner rather than later so that your wishes can be carried out in the event that you do lose capacity. Just because you are living with dementia it does not necessarily mean you are unable to make a Will. However, time is of the essence and it is important to ensure you seek legal advice as early as possible, while you are still in a position to pass the legal test for testamentary capacity.

The Gift of Water at Flower Festival

St. Andrew`s Methodist Church, Sheringham was a sea of floral colour and perfume during the first weekend in July, as they held their annual four day Flower Festival.

This year`s theme of ‘The Gift of Water’ was depicted in 30 stunning floral arrangements, by church members and by flower arrangers from around the area, the titles of the displays giving food for thought on the sources of water, forms of water, uses of water, by not Rain only looking at the beautiful display but in the descriptive programmes to read as folk looked at the floral displays.

From `An Oasis` to `Holidays on the Norfolk Broads`, `Jesus and the Woman at the Well`, `Snow and Ice`, `Rain`, `A Window Cleaner` to `Flushing Water` in which the Andrex puppy caught peoples eye!

Displays also showed the need to care for people and the world through the displays on `Pollution` and `Water Aid`. So much thought and details had been put into each arrangement.

The whole experience was enhanced by music provided by a rota of organists.

Visitors to the festival came from near and far, with coach parties coming from Lowestoft, Downham Market, and many folk making return visits, having booked to have their holidays here in the town especially while the Festival was on.

On Tuesday 25 June Greg Cooper became the 63rd President of Holt and District Rotary. Greg, who is Treasurer of the Blakeney Harbour Association and the Chair of Holt Dementia Friendly Community Support Group, is keen for Rotary to move forward and make further contributions in the local community.

CALLING ALL ARTISTS - ARTIST’S SECRET POSTCARD FUNDRAISER

Thorpe Market Church is a church & rural arts venue in North Norfolk and is going to be host to a very special anonymous fundraising exhibition/ sale of original, postcard-sized artworks in 2 & 3 dimensions to raise funds for professional quality audio visual facilities at the venue. The original artworks will be created and donated by established and up-andcoming artists from all over the country. We are also inviting well known artists with a connection to Norfolk to submit and support this rural initiative. Entries are invited from all established, emerging & amateur artists. The brief is simple : all entries (up to a max. of 3 per person) must be on card, 6 inches by four inches (15 x 10 cm) and in any original medium including drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, collage, glass, ceramics and assemblage. The church is well known for its wildlife churchyard conservation scheme. Themes reflecting ecological concerns & reflections, including challenging submissions are welcome. Closing date for entries Friday 27 September 2019.

‘6by4’ will be held as an exhibition for three days at Thorpe Market Church on 18 – 20 October. Potential buyers will be able to view the anonymous postcards on-line from early October. This is a great opportunity for young and emerging talent to be shown alongside mid- career and established artists. It is also a great chance for art lovers and collectors to purchase a hidden gem from an unusual rural ‘Gothic Revival’ architectural gem.

Almost 1 in 8 people in Norfolk are looking after a friend or family member who due to illness, disability or an addiction can’t manage without their support.

All unpaid carers are entitled to support but many find it hard to navigate their way through the services available.

On Tuesday 2 July, after a splendid lunch, John Balls, who organises the Norfolk Titanic Association, gave a fascinating talk called “Titanic – Imposters and Assumed Names�.

John has discovered that over 30 people travelled on the Titanic under assumed names. His research has been a study of human motives and desperation. John’s interest was sparked by a newspaper article about a 92-year-old survivor who had died in 2005. She claimed to have been the youngest survivor, having been conceived on board, and she fought unsuccessfully to have her mother’s lover recognised as her father and shown on her birth certificate.

John divided the imposters into four groups - ‘professionals’, ‘lovers’, ‘those wishing to escape’ and ‘mysteries’. The ‘professionals’ were gamblers who worked in threes, targeting wealthy passengers. The ‘lovers’ were eloping couples, such as the pair who pretended to be brother and sister. ‘Those wishing to escape’ included a man accused by a pregnant woman of being the father of her baby. The largest group of imposters were the ‘mysteries’, many of whom were crew members.

The most interesting case John cited was that of Thomas Hart, whose documentation was stolen in a Southampton pub when he was drunk. The thief boarded the Titanic in his place and Thomas, embarrassed, disappeared until after the disaster, arriving at the house of his mother, who had thought him dead!

Holt & Distict Probus Club

The July meeting of Holt and District Probus Club started as usual with a quality lunch served up by the staff at The Feathers in Holt.

Afterwards, Roy Beckley spoke about the North Norfolk Classic Vehicle Club.

Roy who is a founder member of the Club, said that the original meeting that led to its formation had been in The Feathers and they now have a strong membership who own some hundreds of classic cars and other vehicles.

The question was asked “what is a classic car”? The answer is “It depends”! A mass production car would have to be perhaps 25 or more years old, but top notch cars – Rolls Royce, Bentley, Jaguar and so on, can be more recent.

The meeting began with several items of business, including feedback from Caroline Purkiss (Holt WI), who had attended the Annual Meeting in Bournemouth as our representative.

Crystal created four very different arrangements, using a wide variety of flowers and foliage. These included a table display, an arrangement in a tall terracotta pot, another in a large cocktail glass and finally a beautiful display in a whicker trug. At the end of the afternoon these were donated as raffle prizes, which created a last minute flurry to purchase extra tickets.

The jazz band played throughout to give everyone a great feel good factor!

As she worked, Crystal described how her career with flowers has developed over the past 30 years. She runs a variety of classes and workshops and will soon be starting a class in Aylsham, at which new members would be very welcome. She stressed that her classes are very lighthearted with a focus on fun, friendship and flowers. Several members expressed an interest in attending. Sadler’s Wood, near North Walsham, has re-joined Holt Country Park and Pretty Corner Woods in being recognised by the Green Flag Award Scheme as one of the very best in the world.

Holt Country Park holds its position as a green space for the 14th year running and was joined by Pretty Corner Woods in 2013. Sadler’s Wood first received the accolade in 2012 and despite just missing out last year it has now re-claimed its place thanks to the hard work of our Countryside Team.

“I have been watching ‘Saving Lives at Sea’ showing the RNLI crew. I have great admiration for the people who risk their own lives to save others. I just need to tell you a story, which to me, as a mum, is quite amazing. ln 2015 my son Joshua aged 8 was diagnosed with a cyst on his kidney. We have a friend, Margaret Gould who lives in Sheringham and volunteers in the RNLI Shop and she asked the helmsman to sign a lifeboat postcard to cheer Joshua up as he had to have an operation in Bristol children's Hospital. Joshua received a little parcel which contained a lifeboat book signed by all the crew wishing Joshua well. This was a very emotional feeling to think that this crew knew nothing about Joshua, but the messages were sincere and he felt so important and said “they don’t even know me Mummy but when I get better I want to see them.” Joshua took his book to the hospital to show the staff. The operation unfortunately was not a success and within two months Joshua had to go back in to have a more serious operation. Joshua’s birthday was in the July and all he wanted for his birthday was to have a visit to Sheringham and visit the crew, so we made the five hour journey from Somerset on the Saturday and went and visited the lifeboat centre on the Sunday. You would think Joshua and my other children, Emily 10 and Thomas 5, were royalty! They were shown around the station and even got to sit in the lifeboat, tried on their kit and given gifts of key rings and postcards. Joshua said it was one of the best days of his life so as his birthday approaches each year he asks if he can go to Sheringham to take cake to his RNLI family - it is such an important day for him as I am quite sure they helped to give him strength to fight and recover. This has now become a yearly trip that Joshua looks forward to, so not only has the Sheringham crew saved life at sea they have definitely played a part in Joshua’s recovery. Sometimes people do not realise how their kindness touches the hearts of others, I will always be extremely grateful for a gesture which meant the world to Joshua. Inspirational Friends Smash Fundraising Goal

Two Norfolk ladies arranged a sponsored Spring Walk in March 2019 in memory of their husbands, Leigh Hunter and Rev Michael Banks who both died from rare forms of cancer.

Judith Banks, 76, from Saxthorpe, and Angela Hunter, 57, from Sheringham, had hoped to raise £3000 for Cancer Research UK.

On 9 March in very windy and wet conditions, 60 participants took part in a sponsored spring walk around the grounds of Blickling Hall to raise funds for Cancer Research UK. Despite almost losing their gazebo to the elements, the walkers carried on and the walk was a massive success. Angela and Judith’s incredible efforts brought the fundraising total to £7254.64.

Judith said “I am truly grateful for the amount of support I gained from Angela, and Fran at Blickling Hall in the planning and also that of our sponsors, who surpassed our expectations

by being so very generous. It was a tremendous effort on everyone's part.”

Angela said, “Losing a partner is an experience beyond comprehension. Between us, with the support of CRUK, National Trust, our friends, families and strangers Judith and I created a fundraising event. It brought people who had suffered loss together, endeavouring to bring some good out of personal calamity, hoping that soon there will be an end to cancers of all sorts, and improved treatment. This journey has been an enormous opportunity for learning and brought Judith and I together as friends to support each other. It's been extremely valuable to us both.”

Deborah Adams, Cancer Research UK’s local fundraising manager for Norfolk and Suffolk, said “Angela and Judith are an absolute inspiration and we can’t thank them enough for his commitment to helping Cancer Research UK beat cancer sooner.”

“One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some stage in their lives, but the good news is more people are surviving the disease now than ever before. Cancer survival in the UK has doubled since the early 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress. However, we have only been able to achieve this thanks to the dedication and generosity of volunteers and supporters like Angela and Judith without whom we would not be able to fund outstanding scientists, doctors and nurses.”

Grant supports STEM curriculum at Sheringham Woodfields School

Sheringham Woodfields School has recently strengthened the delivery of its science curriculum having received a grant from the Sheringham Shoal Community Fund. This generous donation has enabled the school to purchase a range of innovative learning resources and equipment.

The resources include KNEX STEM Renewable Energy Science and Lego Mindstorm Education sets, equipment which enables pupils to undertake a range of scientific, technical and engineering tasks, including:

• constructing fully functional replicas of devices powered by alternative sources of energy • powering an electric circuit by solar panel or wind turbine • designing and building programmable robots using a range of components including motors, sensors, gears wheels and axles

responded to the new ways in which science, technology, engineering and mathematics can now be taught through the use of this new equipment, saying: "These new learning resources will assist the school to enhance the delivery of the science curriculum. They will be of particular assistance to the more academic pupils who wish to pursue formal studies such as GCSEs, as well as those who will be seeking employment and further learning opportunities once they leave school."

Currently, Sheringham Woodfields provides places for 111 children and young people who are supported by 121 members of staff. However, work has recently started on the site of the existing school to create a new Therapeutic Centre which, when completed in early 2020, will create another 24-30 school places, helping to relieve the pressure on special school places for children in Norfolk.

Earlier this year, Sheringham Woodfields School received an ‘Outstanding' rating from its recent OFSTED inspection.
