MAYOR APPLAUDS PLASTICS GAMECHANGERS AT SPA ANNUAL MEETING

Continued from front cover...

More than 30 people attended SPA’s 2nd Annual Meeting on 24 June to see Mayor Madeline Ashcroft present 13 Sheringham businesses with Certificates of Achievement for the work they are doing to reduce single use plastic in their businesses.

• Winner of the Carousel Cup - Team Lobster

• Winner of the Brian Pegg Memorial Cup - Sheringham Lifeboat Crew

• Winner of the Wackiest Raft The Sheringham Playpark Revamp with Jaws

Camellia Cottage, Whelk Coppers, The Sitting Room, Fat Teds, Picaroons B&B, Heirloom, Miss Madeleine’s, John Harris Photography, Hillside Animal Sanctuary, Bumble Barn Bell Tents, All Natural Company, No. 10 Restaurant and Creativity.

Congratulations also to Hula Hula, Team Lobster Bar and Team Lobster Kitchen

“refuse, re-use and re-cycle” were the key words from nnDC’s richard Crabbe and Kate Haselton-Glee.

The Carousel Cup, Best Dressed Crew Cup and Wackiest Raft Cup are all sponsored by Carousel Candys and Carousel Amusements.

Their message was that re-cycling is only part of the answer when it comes to dealing with plastics. We all have a shared responsibility to refuse single-use plastic wherever we are offered it and to re-use whenever we can. See www.recyclefornorfolk.org.uk to learn more about what you can do to play your part.

The £30 prize money is donated by Keith Welch Landscapes.

SPA is continuing to work with a range of organisations and businesses to achieve Plastic Free Coastline Status for the town. A great boost towards everyone’s efforts is the new Government ban on the sale and use of plastic stirrers (amongst some other things) which will come into force between October 2019 and Oct 2020. This is particularly important for Sheringham as a holiday/day trip destination.

Congratulations to SPA Junior Group at Sheringham Primary School who have won a Sheringham Community Award for their amazing work in reducing the single-use plastics around the school.

They are now working together with the High School on a Carnival Float which will show the negative impact of plastic on the environment and underline the commitment of the young people of Sheringham to achieve and maintain a plastic free town now and in the future. sheringhamplasticaware@gmail.com

North Norfolk wins big at Building Awards 2019 Robson Construction, Chaplin Farrant Ltd and Wells Maltings Trust.

North Norfolk District Councils (NNDC) Building Control team and its customers had another successful night at the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) East Anglian Building Excellence Awards 2019.

The LABC Building Excellence Awards recognise the importance of building control in England and Wales in creating safe, accessible and sustainable buildings that are constructed to high standards.

This year more than 240 construction professionals attended the Awards at the magnificent buildings of the Halls, St Andrews Plain in Norwich on Friday July 5. The awards showcased buildings and design teams that have come up against complex technical or construction issues across East Anglia, with several north Norfolk projects beating out the stiff competition.

The prizes didn’t stop there, Stow Windmill, Paston, North Walsham undertaken by Roger Hough and P H Design and Planning Ltd also received a Highly Commended award. WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER & WARD WARD SILVER SOLICITORS in in 2019? 20 19 ? SOLICITORS

“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difficult time fo or many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offffers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.

“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 2019 to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.

Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 0 1263 8 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk 01263 823465

KELLING PROBUS CLUB

Our Club met at the Dales Hotel Upper Sheringham on 19 July. We were welcomed by our Chairman Andrew Hyatt and after a tasty lunch and lots of conversation and fellowship, Andrew asked our guest speaker Iain McKenzie to speak to the 21 members present.

Iain's subject was slot clubs and model car making. We were taken in to the world of miniature car racing. We were told that slot racing was based on the car racing tracks originally made by Scalextric and the company still exists today making track and cars for home racing.

However Iain's world of slot racing was a different world. The club to which he belonged had 20 members and met weekly for racing sessions. Their special track with all its authentic model surrounds was 97 feet long and their cars complete the circuit in 6 to 8 seconds. He stated that most cars used by members were not original Scalexctric but models made by other companies or by members themselves. The intricate design and modelling could make the cost of the car up to ÂŁ100. A lot of work is put in to make the car hold the track, keep its balance and accelerate and brake as it corners the track.

There were various categories of race and each race was usually 20 laps. By a process of points the winner for the evening was decided and each club had its champion of the year. There are approximately 40 slot clubs with their own tracks in the UK and Iain's own club is Presto Park at Hevingham - he said that people would be welcome to give it a try.

A vote of thanks was given by Clive Mitchell. Any retired male interested in attending our meetings should phone John Whittington on 01263 820333.

Abuse and loneliness

Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr

As I head off to London for the annual Solicitors for the Elderly (SfE) national conference I am reminded about the real world background to some of the legal work that I do.

This year one of the six seminars covers the hot topic of elder victims of fraud and abuse, including that arising within the family. Another seminar covers the role of the solicitor as an important safeguard in managing finances. The Master of the Court of Protection will talk on whether abuse of the elderly could be considered as a ‘hate crime’, with all the stringent penalties that follow. The relationship of family dynamics and abuse of the elderly and how longstanding unresolved conflict, identity and roles of family members, mental health and financial circumstances may influence how an elderly person is treated. We will learn how to identify these ‘red flags’ and what can be done to protect the elderly.

The NHS website states that according to Age UK more than 2 million people over age 75 live alone and more than a million older people say that they go for over a month without speaking to a friend, neighbour and family member. People can become socially isolated for a variety of reasons, such as getting older or weaker, no

longer being the hub of their family, leaving the work place, the death of spouses or friends, or through disability or illness. Whatever the cause, it’s shockingly easy to be left feeling alone and vulnerable, which can lead to depression and a serious decline in physical health and wellbeing.

The idea that technological advances will be able to replace human-interaction has a scarily science fiction quality to it; ticking (or should that be clicking?) boxes, rather than holding hands.

Wells-next-the-Sea is lucky to have Heritage House providing day care for those living in Wells and the surrounding area. The visitors receive a home-cooked two course lunch, the option of a bath and hairdressing, access to a wide-range of public sector agencies support and NHS services, activities including singing, seated-exercise and the garden, and for many most importantly, companionship.

Volunteers are always needed and are fundamental to the running of Heritage House. They drive and assist on the minibuses, help in the garden and, simply, but most valuably, spend time and interact with the day visitors.

a significant proportion of a very vulnerable sector of our population, i.e. the elderly, has been somewhat forgotten as needing special support. In some circles the elderly are even seen as privileged, compared with young people; perhaps this is not unreasonable when looking at the cost of housing. Targeting resources is important, providing the money saved (e.g. on the removal of free TV licences for all over 75) is spent on our elderly citizens where it is needed.

Where are you going Mary-Jane with the heart of gold we love? Where are you going Mary-Jane; we know you’ve been before. So do we follow your golden heart where you have been before? Oh, tell us, tell us Mary-Jane, what is there there to see? More golden hearts that we may take and be like Mary-Jane? And is there behind that wooden door the secret to your fame? Open, open Mary-Jane, they call, but all in vain, The room is empty nothing in it, until in steps Mary-Jane. And then the room is filled with love which comes from Mary-Jane, For Mary-Jane has a Golden Heart from all the Love she’s given.

On one evening during the course of their very successful Annual Exhibition, North Norfolk Photographic Society members met to view each other’s work and to host the annual awards to members.

Every member who had won 1st, 2nd or 3rd in every competition over Diana Knight receiving her the year was awarded a Photographer of the Year trophy from certificate. But most of all, chair Rob Palethorpe a points system over the year resulted in the appointment of ‘Photographers of the Year’ – one novice and one advanced.

I have now separated Mother & her babies (late July). She will be going back to be released in time to find another mate & have a second litter. In reality the actual number reared successfully per female in a season is only about two or three, so this mother has done very well in rearing all four of her litter. The four babies I have housed into two couples to avoid fighting. In the wild they would usually grow large & bold enough to wander off on their own at about 6 weeks of age. As they are now approaching that age, it will not be long before the two larger ones will also be going to be released. Find us on Facebook Hedgehog Haven North Norfolk.

The Advanced Photographer of the Year is Diana Knight; and the Novice winner is Hanne Siebers.

Chairman Rob Palethorpe awarding the trophies commented on a successful year when the quality of members’ photographs just seemed to get ever higher, well shown by the work done by Diana Knight and Hanne Siebers.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Tango, whose picture was featured last time, has now left for her new home with an older family who realised that taking on a young cat would not suit their lifestyle or be fair on the cat. She has already settled in and is enjoying having a lap to sit on once again.

I have previously spoken of the problems that can be encountered when getting a cat or kitten from one of pet websites and saw an instance of this on my latest visit to the vets with my own cat. A young lady who I knew from her work with a cat problem in her village, was at the desk having just seen the vet with her very vocal young kitten. Recognising me, she then told me her sorry tale. She had always wanted a Ragdoll cat so had gone on one of these websites and found what she thought was a reputable breeder and paid £200 for a kitten. She had then taken the kitten to the vets because it had a tummy upset and was advised that her kitten was certainly not a Ragdoll but possibly a Siamese cross. Quite a difference. She said the breeder had charged a lower price because the parents did not have the relevant paperwork showing their breed history. She could have had another kitten, with papers, but this would have cost £400. Although there are reputable breeders who do advertise on these sites, not all are, as this young lady has discovered. Ragdoll and Siamese cats have such very different temperaments and, although this kitten will be much loved, it is not what she had intended to buy. If you do go to a breeder via the website, make sure they give you the family history (normally going back four generations) and indicate whether or not they are registered with GCCF. Reputable breeders will charge a price depending on whether the kitten is of “show quality” or, if being sold as a pet, will usually insist that it is neutered when old enough.

Last time when mentioning the roles undertaken by our volunteers, we mentioned the various options available for those with computer skills.

There are also other opportunities available which include registering the cat and owners information on the microchip databases (at present we have access to three of these). Because we have access to these websites, we have also been able to reunite cats with their owners who have already been chipped, either having been handed into our care or found as a stray. For those who enjoy working with spreadsheets and “word” there are other options available, more of which next time.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

Social Housing Grant

A housing charity has been handed the keys to another home following the award of a grant by North Norfolk District Council.

The £80,000 grant topped up the funds already raised by Stable Door, which has enabled the Sheringham charity to accelerate the acquisition of the latest addition to its portfolio.

Stable Door, which now has eight properties in the town, will welcome the first tenants once renovation work on the three-bedroom house has been completed. As with all the charity’s tenants, they will have a strong Sheringham connection.

The grant is part of NNDC’s commitment to help boost the provision of affordable housing across the district and mitigate the effects of second homes, which can result in inflated property prices.

Cllr Karen Ward, North Norfolk District Council cabinet member for housing and planning, said: “The impact of second homes on the district’s residents is something we take extremely seriously and is one of the top priorities for this administration. Ensuring there remains a good supply of affordable homes in North Norfolk is key, so we’re delighted to be able to help Stable Door with this project.”

The grant from NNDC comes from a pot of £2.4m that central government has allocated to the authority from the Community Housing Fund.

Stable Door is a small charity run by volunteers to manage its homes and provide additional support to tenants when needed. Formed in 1993 by two sisters who brought together local church representatives, it has since gone from strength to strength, as reflected in the growth of its portfolio.

“People with contacts in Sheringham looking for an affordable home will be delighted to discover that Stable Door is making this a real possibility, as a starting measure that can be reviewed every year.”

Cllr Colin Heinink, a fellow Sheringham South ward member, said: “I appreciate the wonderful work Stable Door does in providing affordable accommodation to families in our town and I will endeavour to support them going from strength to strength.”

To find out more about Stable Door, please visit the Stable Door website www.sheringhamstabledoor.co.uk

Top organist boosts Friends with concert of classics

Darryl Smith, the charity’s chairman, said: “We’re pleased to be able to work in partnership with NNDC to achieve this addition to our property portfolio, and this will enable us to provide accommodation to a family in need from the Sheringham area. We look forward to being able to work with the council again in future.”

A concert of organ music classics has raised some “notes” for the North Walsham War Memorial Hospital Friends. The event, staged at the town’s parish church, saw Jon Payne play a programme of music for a summer’s evening.

Cllr Penny Bevan-Jones, an NNDC member for Sheringham South, said:

It ranged from Handel’s Water Music Organist Jon Payne to the Eurovision theme tune (aka Photo: Jon Payne Charpentier's Te Deum) and raised £150 which has been split between the church and the Friends.

Jon, an eminent musician with 30 years’ experience, lives in Sheringham and became aware of the Friends through the a fund-raising comedy night.

Friends chairman Keith Jarvis said: “We really appreciate it when people hold fund-raising events for us. It shows the support the hospital and its Friends have, and how word is spreading about the work we do.”

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station Information that could Save Your Life

This was the message that the RNLI Community Safety Team along with Norfolk Fire Service, Norfolk Police Broads Beat, HM Coastguard, Hemsby and Sea Palling Lifeboats and Lowland Rescue delivered at Richardsons Boat Yard, Stalham for their Norfolk Day event held on Saturday 27 July.

The RNLI Community Safety Team, with all the other organisations, were giving out information that could save your life when around water. The aim was not to stop people from having fun in the water but to do it in a safe way. It has been heart breaking to hear of the number of deaths from drowning in the past few days.

So all the agencies were giving out the same message.

On the beach always swim where there are Lifeguards on duty; if this is not possible then never swim by yourself, always have someone

on the beach who has a mobile phone or other means of getting help. If people are in trouble call 999 and ask for the Coastguard who will get help to you.

Near inland waterways the advice is to not jump into these as you are not aware of what is under the water, i.e. weeds metal objects, posts or how deep the water is and how strong the currents are. Again, if you see anyone in trouble then call 999 and ask for the Coastguard as they know where all the resources are that can get to you quickly, as well as Fire, Police and Ambulance.

if you fall unexpectedly into water:

1. Fight your instinct to thrash around 2. lean back, extend your arms and legs 3. if you need to, gently move them around to help you float 4. Float until you can control your breathing 5. only then call for help or swim to safety

If you intend to go to the beach or rivers / inland waters then go on the internet to find out as much information as you can, check tide times, where Lifeguards operate, supervised

Norfolk’s 2019 Heritage Open Days festival brochure is launched at historic Marble Hall

This year’s Heritage Open Days (HODs) festival brochure with ten unmissable days of free tours, talks, walks, open days, exhibitions, performances and shows planned across Norfolk was launched last month.

Heritage champions, local dignitaries and festival organisers gathered at Marble Hall for the launch – with the historic home of Aviva at Surrey House one of the many venues opening its doors for tours throughout the festival.

HODs is England’s largest festival of history and culture and this year marks the 25th anniversary, with a special ‘People Power’ theme being celebrated across many events. The theme demonstrates the influence groups and individuals have had over history to bring about positive change in their communities – and in Norfolk events include a new Kett’s Rebellion Tour, a display on the Burston School Strike and a guided story of Edith Cavell.

This year’s festival takes place from Friday 13 September to Sunday 22 September, with more than 350 events lined-up in Norwich and across Norfolk.

The festival brochure is available to pick up now from The Forum in Norwich as well as Tourist Information Centres, libraries and venues across the county and electronically at www.theforumnorwich.co.uk/hods.

All festival events are free to attend with many available for visitors to drop-in on the day unless indicated otherwise in the festival brochure. Some popular venues and events with limited space must be pre-booked, with bookings opening on Monday 29 July at 10am.

KITCHEN FRONTS of Norfolk

The HODs programme includes plenty of the usual favourites as well as some exciting new venues and activities. Here’s a taste of what’s on offer: • Take part in a Dare to Dream craftivism workshop at The Forum, Norwich with award-winning activist Sarah Corbett, founder of the Craftivist Collective. • Listen to stories from Norwich High School for Girls which was open from 1877 to 1933 in a new talk at The Assembly House in Norwich. • Visit Bishop Bonner’s Cottage Museum, the oldest domestic building in Dereham which dates from the 1500s, and hear about characters such as war veteran one-armed Jack who was the last resident of the cottage. • Experience how Norwich once was with photos captured by the late Jack Roberts on display for the first time in the Portraits of Life exhibition at The Forum, Norwich. • Visit Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse for a programme of Taboo Tours discussing how death, mental health, LGBT+ and women were addressed in the workhouse. • Travel back to 1578 to discover how Tudor Norwich prepared for Queen Elizabeth I’s visit in the Putting on a Pageant interactive talk for families and young historians at The Forum, Norwich. • Sign up for a new 5k or 10k Heritage Run in Thetford taking in historic sites around the town with fancy dress encouraged. • See inside Norwich’s Dragon Hall, a magnificent medieval trading hall now home to the National Centre for Writing. • Hear about wartime experiences, romance, heroism and tragedy at the 1,000 Years of History event at Haveringland Church. • Take part in a community art piece at the Cathedral of St John the Baptist in Norwich with the A Prayer Answered for Everyone installation. • Visit the Flames to Forum exhibition at the Norfolk and Norwich Millennium Library remembering the library fire 25 years on and how The Forum rose from the ashes. • Take your seat at St George’s Theatre in Great Yarmouth for the Voters, Not Bloaters musical celebration of the women’s suffrage movement in the town.

The brochure launch event was organised by The Forum Trust and kindly hosted by Aviva. The HODs programme is coordinated and promoted by The Forum Trust with support from Norwich City Council, Norwich Tourist Information Centre, Broadland District Council, Breckland Council, Thetford Town Council, Great Yarmouth Borough Council, South Norfolk Council, North Norfolk District Council, Visit North Norfolk and many local organisations and individuals.

North Norfolk District Council shortlisted for two APSE awards

- Success for Goats on a Slope

networking community that assists local authorities who are striving to improve their frontline services.

North Norfolk District Council has been shortlisted as finalists in two APSE categories - Best Commercialisation and Entrepreneurship Initiative and Best Innovation or Demand Management Initiative.

The annual seminar will take place in Newcastle and the winners will be announced on Thursday 12 September.

This is in recognition of the success of our unique Goats on a Slope, including the utilisation of the Bagot herd for cost-effective vegetation maintenance and subsequent launch of themed merchandise, proceeds from which are re-invested in the project.

Cllr.Sarah Bütikofer, Leader of North Norfolk District Council said “I am delighted the innovative and creative approach taken by the team to solve an environmental problem has received such wide spread public support and is now shortlisted for a national award. I will be keeping my fingers crossed for the team on 12 September.”

Recycling your own fat! Fat transfer for facial and body contouring a three dimensional face lift or body augmentation.

Age and nature can be very unkind to us. We tend to gain weight were we don’t want and lose it from where we don’t want to! This is due to physiology of ageing, our hormones and metabolism.

We can however cheat a little to help reverse these changes. We can take fat from where we don’t want it and put a little where we want it. Sounds exciting!

A lot of us think about improving our facial or body contours, whether it is to lose some fat from diet and exercise resistant areas or just to look good. Liposuction has come of age and is now performed purely under local anaesthesia. What is even more attractive is that we can now recycle this fat to fill out areas where you have lost volume from!

Fat is your own natural filler. Fat is not merely a passive ‘filler'. It is an active metabolic tissue

and a rich source of various growth factors and stem cells. Use of fat to fill areas of volume loss is not new but we have new techniques and refinements which make it very successful. This procedure is very attractive if you are also considering body contouring or liposuction. Recent problems with breast implants have made fat transfer procedure attractive for breast enhancement.

what happens with facial ageing? The old method of looking at facial ageing was based on a gravitational model: that all things fall over time. The new model of the facial ageing process focuses on the primary importance of how the face deflates and loses volume decade after decade. What was once thought to be sagging has now been understood to be caused by facial deflation. A facelift without volume restoration looks artificial. Replacing lost fat results in a natural look.

what happens with ageing of the body? Redistribution of body fat occurs due to

01603 736487

changes in metabolism and ageing. Fat is lost from certain body areas and face and accumulates in other areas such as chin, jowls, hips and thighs. These localised deposits of fat can be resistant to diet and exercise.

what is fat transfer? Fat transfer is the transfer of fat from one part of your body to another. A doctor must carefully harvest fat cells that are then injected to firm, fill out or plump up other body part like faces, hands, cheeks, breasts or buttocks. This is also known as fat injections or autologous fat grafting. Since it is your own body fat there is no chance of allergic reactions. Some of the injected fat can be reabsorbed by the body and more than one session may be required.

This procedure is performed under local anaesthesia. The fat injections create a lasting youthful appearance.

Norfolk’s Clapham & Collinge LLP shortlisted for prestigious legal awards

The Barking Guide to the Norfolk Fells

From the pen of Norfolk writer and climber Wayne Wright come a series of three humorous guides to Norfolk that will entertain, inform and equip anyone to appreciate the great Norfolk outdoors.

In the true spirit of outdoor pursuits, the three volumes, under the banner title of ‘The Barking Guide to the Norfolk Fells’ are:

Local law firm Clapham & Collinge LLP has been shortlisted for the Law Society’s prestigious Excellence Awards 2019, the highest accolade for law firms in England and Wales.

• Volume 1 - The Norfolk High Peaks • Volume 2 - The Norfolk Fells • Volume 3 - The Norfolk Lake District

Clapham & Collinge LLP has been shortlisted in the Excellence in Marketing and Communications category.

Each volume comes with information on the geography and geology of the locations, along with suggested walks, fascinating facts and improbable explanations, and is fully illustrated.

Wayne Wright is a true Norfolk climber, born half-way up one of Norfolk’s finest peaks (Dodd’s Hill in the Dersingham Range), and has spent his life trying to get to the top by scaling every imaginable summit in the county of his birth. He now catalogues the peaks, fells and lakes for those who share his love of the great outdoors.

Louis Hilldrup-Boorman, Marketing Manager at Clapham & Collinge said ‘‘We have developed a unique marketing strategy, with Corporate Social Responsibility at the forefront of the business. The firm’s growth, identity and strong reputation is underpinned by this marketing strategy so I am absolutely delighted that we have been shortlisted for the Excellence in Marketing and Communications Award.’’

Law Society president Simon Davis said: “There are more than 140,000 solicitors in England and Wales – to be shortlisted for an Excellence Award is to be recognised as among the very best of the profession.

The volumes are available at Jarrolds of Norwich and Cromer, Holt Bookshop, Green Pastures Dereham, Bittern Books of Coltishall, and all good bookshops. They are £5 each with all profits going to support the Norfolk child and young persons bereavement charity Nelson’s Journey.

“The firms and solicitors shortlisted should be commended for going above and beyond to support their clients, often navigating tricky and sometimes contentious areas of the law.

“With the justice system so under strain, we should take this opportunity to celebrate the incredible work solicitors do day-in and day-out – and to recognise the immense contribution they make to our society.”

Wayne Wright is the nom-de-plume of Paul Rosier, author, speaker and entertainer. For further information on these volumes or others in the “Barking” series, please contact Paul at paulrosier@hotmail.co.uk or by telephone on 01263 515039.

Winners are announced at the Law Society’s Excellence Awards ceremony in London on 23 October 2019.

North Norfolk MP rolls up his sleeves for Cancer Research UK

Sir Norman Lamb MP is backing a call from Cancer Research UK to help bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.

The North Norfolk MP met staff and volunteers at the charity’s Cromer shop on Friday 19 July to play his part and show how local people can support the charity. Predictions show that the number of people with cancer in the UK is set to rise steeply by 2030.

That’s why the MP has joined forces with Cancer Research UK to help accelerate the progress the charity is making and highlight the power of research in beating the disease.

He said: “I’m delighted to support my local Cancer Research UK shop and find out more about the hard work that goes on behind the scenes. Research is cancer’s number one enemy and it is people like the dedicated volunteers I met at the shop who are enabling the charity’s researchers to keep making huge advances in the battle against the disease. While more of us will be diagnosed with cancer in future, there

is good news. Thanks to the generosity of its supporters, Cancer Research UK’s work is helping to ensure more men, women and children survive the disease. So I’m calling on the local community to help Cancer Research UK to beat cancer.”

The MP is encouraging people to support the charity in any way they can, whether it’s donating or buying from the shop, volunteering for a few hours a week, or signing up for a sporting challenge.

Cancer Research UK’s Cromer shop manager, Sarah Stanforth, said: “Every donation made, every hour volunteered and every person who supports Cancer Research UK takes us closer to beating cancer.”

The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) entry level coaching course, LTA Level 1, is now being offered in Cromer!

Golf Day Raises £9000

Such courses are only very rarely held in Norfolk and this is the first time for a LTA Level 1 to be held at Cromer.

On behalf of the Holt Youth Project and North Norfolk Rotary Club may I through your publication confirm we have raised £9000 from our Annual Charity Golf Day at Royal Cromer Golf Club, held on July 17th.

Most LTA courses are held in London and other big centres around the country.

The coaching course is a 3-day course on August 20th, August 21st and September 29th 2019, and is being held at Cromer Lawn Tennis & Squash Club with indoor provision at Easton if weather inclement.

This LTA Level 1 course is open to players aged 16 and above and is listed on the LTA courses website www.lta.org.uk and being promoted by Norfolk Tennis (Norfolk LTA).

LTA Level 1 is the entry level qualification for coaching and enables players to become assistant coaches at tennis clubs.

Players can then quickly go on to level 2 to enable them to coach groups and then indeed to Level 3 to enable them to coach individuals, working independently.

A number of young people find tennis a good way of paying their way through higher education – by assisting with the tennis at College sports centres and giving lessons to their fellow students.

Some get summer jobs as coaches in the Mediterranean or even do their gap year as a tennis coach.

Sheringham team: Kelly Carter, Philp Hall, Paul Howell, Malcolm Hall

Our Thanks go to the Management, Professional shop and catering team for the superb services offered and without which we could not hold the event. Alongside the many volunteers that help make the day a success. The event was held with a full team complement of 96 players and complete hole sponsorship, which we are indebted to all the many local businesses who supported us, once again. An especial mention to Norfolk Homes who was our main sponsor and have been now for several years. The winning team was captained by Jason Sheridan from JMS with a winning score of 99, 2nd Ryan Carter’s team 96 with Lee Patterson’s 3rd with 95.

It is also a fabulous opportunity for older club players to take up a second career/hobby in coaching.

It is never too late to become a coach - I did my LTA Level 1 when I was well over 60!

The LTA Level 1 course is fun – you learn so much in technique, teaching technique and organising groups of children.

Cromer Lawn Tennis & Squash Club sees itself as a club providing a happy fun place for players of all ages and abilities, especially the disabled, to enjoy tennis; but the LTA I level course could be the start of the Cromer club becoming a nursery of tennis coaches.

We had a lovely and inspiring talk from Julie Alford (Manager and Founder) detailing the varied mix of services currently offered by the Holt Youth Project. She was accompanied by 2 sisters who are part of the ‘Young Carers’ of 6 and 9 who inspired the group alongside presenting the prizes. Kevin Abbs
