Sheringham Carnival Parade 2019

The 7th of August saw the triumphant return of Sheringham Carnival. A crowd of thousands came to view the event and its vivid and creative selection of carnival floats. There was plenty of novelty and festive spectacle to be seen this year. Llamas, opulent costumes, street dancers, nymphs and faeries, people on stilts, a marching band with bagpipes, ghostbusters, pull-along soapboxes with bubbles, and of course the magnificent Puppet Elephants provided by the Carnival Association and Norwich City Council. The sinkhole could not stop the fun. Town Mayor Madeleine Ashcroft has said the Carnival has gone a notch higher this year. Continued on page 4...

Collaboration is the Key Ingredient for the Foodbank

A question we’re often asked is how people access the Foodbank.

We assume that this question comes from a shared concern about fairness and wanting to be assured that it is our fellow citizens in most need who receive our help.

The answer is collaboration. As with so many areas in our lives, we are stronger when we work together with others and so we too build strong alliances with others to ensure the Foodbank works to help people in crisis.

Our alliances include over 100 agencies across North Norfolk who refer people to us through a voucher system. Our partner agencies include Children’s Services, Children’s Centres, Schools and Housing Trusts, to name just a few.

Probably the place most of us know to go for help is Citizens Advice. This is because they are best placed to help those of us in crisis, always looking for ways to help whilst mindful of doing the right thing for everyone.

The relationship between the Foodbank and

Citizens Advice ensures that people can access help with food and fuel during a temporary crisis. Experience shows that up to three visits to the Foodbank are usually enough help for most people, although understandably there are times when some people need more help.

People often ask what defines a crisis and Citizens Advice is very clear about this. Crisis is usually caused by people not having enough money for food, fuel and a place to live. These are the first priorities.

If people are in receipt of enough money to cover these things there is no immediate crisis and it is also important to say that crisis caused by poor budgeting does not give automatic access to the Foodbank. People who do need help with budgeting skills can still be helped by the Citizens Advice who work in partnership with the Social Prescribing Team at NNDC.

We are very conscious of the fact that we cannot offer our services without the donations you give and you expect your gifts of food and money to go to our fellow citizens who need them most. Collectively, we are the stewards of your donations. We work together to ensure that we can continue to offer our services for

A housing charity has been handed the keys to another home following the award of a grant by North Norfolk District Council.

The £80,000 grant topped up the funds already raised by Stable Door, and has enabled the Sheringham charity to accelerate the acquisition of the latest addition to its portfolio.

Stable Door, which now has eight properties in the town, will welcome the first tenants once renovation work on the three-bedroom house has been completed. As with all the charity’s tenants, they will have a strong Sheringham connection. The grant is part of NNDC’s commitment to help boost the provision of affordable housing across the district and mitigate the effects of second homes, which can result in inflated property prices.

Top brass heading to Norfolk to help hospice appeal

An award-winning brass band is heading to a north Norfolk church to play a fundraising concert for a hospice appeal.

Oddfellows Brass will visit North Walsham Parish Church on Saturday 12 October at 7pm to entertain with a varied programme, from traditional tunes and film scores to chart toppers and original pieces.

The concert is being organised by the Trafalgar branch of the Oddfellows which is based in the town. It will raise funds for the Priscilla Bacon Lodge appeal for a new hospice, and the parish church. The band, based in Leicestershire, was founded as Unity Brass in 1981. It has risen through the rankings to qualify for the National Brass Band Finals six times and played at London’s Royal Albert Hall. It has also toured Europe and visited Barbados four times, and has a new musical director David Holling appointed this year. The Oddfellows sponsor the band as it symbolises the

enjoyment and friendship the society aims to foster through its social events – as well as providing support and benefit for its members, along with donations to other community charities.

The Trafalgar Branch has around 600 members in an area stretching from north Norfolk to the Waveney Valley. It meets monthly, on the third Tuesday (except July and December) at the St Nicholas Rooms in North Walsham.

Development officer Angie Batson said: “We are thrilled to be hosting the national brass band in North Walsham on their first return since 2012. As well as giving pleasure to the audience, the concert will raise funds for a Norfolk charity that is seeking to improve end-of-life care through a new £12m hospice, which has brought comfort to many local people.”

Although the sinkhole has created inconvenience and issues, Sheringham has very much been open for business with Carnival week being a great success. The street races were packed and have grown into an even bigger event this year. With a changed route crowds flocked along the pavements for the parade, with some great floats from across the whole community.

The sinkhole saga is moving on with leaps and bounds now. The main 1000mm seer and manhole is now in place and functional.

Timeframes have moved forward and the handover of the hole at about 1500mm deep to Norfolk County Council is anticipated at about 26 August with road re-opening for 30 August...subject to all going to plan.

The town is planning a community street party on Sunday 1st September at 3 pm in the High Street. Residents, visitors and local councillors and people involved in the repair of the sinkhole have been invited. Everyone will be bringing their own tables and chairs and picnics to celebrate the re-opening of the road.

BeachLife outreach returns to Sheringham

Preparations are underway for this year's BeachLife activity outreach on Sheringham's cliff top and beach later this month. Bumper crowds are expected, and there is no charge to join in the fun.

BeachLife is a joint venture by the churches in Sheringham, aimed at engaging with local youngsters, as well as holidaymakers, and this will be its eighth summer. It will run from Tuesday August 27 to Friday 30. The event is open to all ages from toddlers up to 17.

Woodlands Indoor Bowls Club

Daily activities will start with the “Beach Special” at 10.30am every day except Friday, where all ages come together at the cliff-top marquee on The Leas for music, games, drama and fun, and to introduce the day’s theme, which this year is Epic Explorers. The children and young people then split into age-groups for their “Going Deeper” sessions to explore that day’s theme in more depth before breaking for lunch. On the Friday, the morning starts at 10.30am with the Going Deeper sessions.

Sheringham Flower & Produce Show

Sheringham Horticultural Society held their annual summer show at The Lighthouse on Saturday 10th August.

Despite changeable weather in the preceding few weeks members managed to enter a good

selection of flowers, plants, fruit and vegetables. The home produce (cakes and preserves) and handicrafts classes were well represented.

Of course there is a lot to do behind the scenes, setting up the hall for the show and clearing away afterwards, acting as stewards for the judges and the society would like to thank Blyth & Wright for providing transport and all those who gave their time and effort to help put on the show, as well as all who entered, well done and thank you.

Better Broadband

programme goals are realised

£1,000,000 investment improves connectivity Residents now enjoy the benefit of increased coverage of high speed broadband since North Norfolk District Council’s £1,000,000 commitment to the Better Broadband initiative in 2012. In co-ordination with Norfolk County Council and other District councils a collective £15million was invested into increasing the coverage of high speed broadband across the county.

The current fund included a ÂŁ5.3million take-up rebate from the first Better Broadband contract in 2012 which was allocated to the District Councils that invested, which in effect created an additional ÂŁ1.50 for every ÂŁ1 invested by North Norfolk District Council.

At the time of inception, only 11% of North Norfolk properties had access to speeds of 15Mbps and by the end of 2015 that number had increased to 74%.

By the completion of this rollout at the end March 2020, coverage in North Norfolk is expected to have risen to 92%. This has already been surpassed, as of the end June 2019 coverage had reached 95%.

Cllr Eric Seward, Deputy Leader of North Norfolk District Council and Portfolio Holder for Finance, said: “I am delighted that the Council’s significant contribution to the p rogramme is leading to much improved broadband connectivity in North Norfolk. This is important to the local economy as it will provide a resource for businesses and make information and shopping online more accessible to residents. It also places North Norfolk in good stead in keeping face with the broadband revolution.�

The Better Broadband for Norfolk (BBfN) programme aims to make Norfolk an even more attractive place to live and work, by making high speed connection as widely available as possible. This increases learning opportunities, reduces social isolation and enables people to work, shop and bank from home.

Griddled peaches and Binham Blue

One of the most beautiful features of the Grove is the peach tree by the old red brick wall housing No6 and the downstairs cloakroom. The tree itself is, in a way, a piece of Cromer history; it was given to John and Ann Graveling by Peter and Betty Coman, patrons of the legendary Captain’s Table fish and chip shop (now the Masala Twist) and the Blue Danube, which was behind the church. John and Peter’s parents were dear friends and their sons – and now grandchildren – are also very close, and every year the tree gives out fruit

which are just as delicious and sweet as the afternoon teas on the lawns it looks out over.

Of course the chefs are less interested in the tree’s history and more in the produce, and they have come up with this wonderful recipe to make the most of the peach harvest every year.

Method Brush the peach quarters with 2 tbsp of the olive oil and grind over a little black pepper. Heat a griddle pan until really hot, add the peaches, cooking for 2-3 mins on each cut side until caramelised. Set aside. Toss the rocket in 1 tbsp of the olive oil, pile up with the cheese and prosciutto on four plates and top with the peach quarters. Whisk together the remaining oil and the vinegar, spoon over the salad and serve.

On Tuesday 6 August, after a superb lunch, Andy Cooper gave a captivating talk called ‘Drones – The Future or a Menace?’

Although stories in the press tend to be negative, for example the Gatwick incident last December, Andy emphasised the positive uses of drones in areas ranging from emergency services to farming to construction.

Andy demonstrated via a few short videos how easy it is to fly a drone. Once it is in the air, the Drone Code, issued by the Civil Aviation Authority, must be followed. This Code instructs the operator to always keep the drone in sight; stay under 400 feet; follow the manufacturer’s instructions; keep at least 50 metres away from people and property; and stay well away from aircraft, airports and airfields. It also states that the operator is responsible for what happens during each flight.

Toy drones can be purchased for as little as £20 but commercial drones can cost up to £5,000. The drone used by most commercial operators is the DJI Phantom 4 Pro, which has sensors to avoid obstacles, GPS navigation and a return to home function. It can also track people and vehicles and has a feature which prevents take-off near airports, prisons, schools and no-fly zones, such as Sandringham.

A study by Price Waterhouse Cooper predicts that by 2030 there could be 76,000 drones operating in the UK’s skies and 628,000 jobs in the drones’ economy. The UK’s GDP could be increased by £42 billion! Drones will be used to deliver packages and takeaway food. Legislation is coming that will make registration compulsory.

Model Engineering Club in need of a new home Can anyone help our small club please?

The North Norfolk Model Engineering Club has been active since 1992. We are a broad range of model engineers who build all sorts of models and currently have a miniature railway at Holt station for steam and battery operated locomotives.

Having been on the site of the North Norfolk Railway for almost 16 years our lease will come to an end early next year due to the NNR wanting to develop its site and extend its museum facilities.

Andrew Munden, General Manager of the North Norfolk Railway said that “We will be very sorry to see the North Norfolk Model Engineering Club leave the station site after all these years, but the long awaited development of the Holt site will soon be underway and this will occupy the site currently used by the miniature railway, that provides rides to our visitors during the summer months.

The North Norfolk Railway hopes the club will be able to secure new premises that will enable them to remain in the local area to the benefit of all visitors and the town.”

On Wednesday afternoon, 7 August, members and friends of Weybourne WI met at the village hall anticipating a talk by a representative from Keys Auctioneers. Unfortunately, our speaker had to cancel, so at very short notice Sue Morton stepped in to talk about her involvement in the appeal to raise funds for the repair of the bells at Upper Sheringham church.

Sue spoke passionately about her love of bell ringing and how she began when she was aged 9. She told us how she came from a bell ringing family. She even met her husband through bell ringing. Sue and her husband lived for 30 years in Bushey and she was proud to have been the only female Tower Captain there. During her time in Bushey, Sue was involved in a project to raise £100,000 to replace the church bells.

When she and her husband retired to Norfolk, four years ago, she thought her fund raising days were over. However, she was made Tower Captain at Holt and then became involved with Upper Sheringham Church and before too long a new fund raising appeal had begun to repair the six bells there. Sue was daunted by the prospect at first, but she is motivated by determined and inspirational women, so this has helped her to persevere. The total amount required for the project has not quite been raised yet, but the bells are currently being repaired in Dorset and it is hoped they will be returned in time to peal for Remembrance Day. North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Moby, the lovely grey tabby boy featured last time, has now left us for a new home. We have had several cats and kittens leave recently, which include the kittens that joined us in very poor health, having been discovered living in a wood pile in someone’s garden. Seeing these lovely kittens before they left for their new homes, with bright eyes, shiny coats and looking so fit and well, makes me realise why we became volunteers to help needy cats in our area. We are also delighted that two of our long-term residents have been reserved and will be leaving us shortly. There are still lots of lovely cats and older kittens just waiting for someone to offer them a new home.

Giving a cat a home is a big commitment and should not be taken lightly. We should always take into consideration how long the cat is likely to live (could be over 20 years) and whether you have the resources to ensure it has food, shelter and when necessary, veterinary care throughout its life. Pet Insurance and special arrangements with your vets for covering the cost of routine treatments are worth considering when deciding to give a home to a pet. However, when taking out Pet Insurance please be aware that treatments for existing conditions will not be covered (or may be charged for at a higher rate).

When I gave a home to my own cat two years ago, I was aware that, because she had already had several teeth removed due to gingivitis, this condition would not be covered, so decided against insuring her. Unfortunately for Mylee, this did not solve her problem and she had another dental to remove the rest of her teeth soon after joining us. Although this seemed to help, it did not provide a complete cure, but for the next 18 months we were able to manage the situation with regular visits to the vets for steroid and antibiotic injections. Then, suddenly, we found this treatment was not working and alternative solutions needed to be found. Jo, her lovely vet consulted veterinary dental specialists to see what else could be done as she now had a very sore mouth and we

needed to do something quickly. New treatments were then discussed and we decided to go ahead with these to give her a good quality of life. More about this next time.

As well as those cat loving people hoping to be able to offer help volunteering, who have computer skills, we would also welcome hearing from Lena, one of the older kittens those who enjoy using “Word” still in care to deal with correspondence received by the branch. This would include responding to all letters received and, where appropriate, sending receipts for donations. They could manage the correspondence with our branch members and even encourage new people to become members. Once they gained experience in these areas there would be the option of also responding to emails received via our Cats Protection website. There are so many ways to help and we will advise on more of these in the next article.

Hedgehog Haven

One or two of the earlier hoglets are now big enough to be released. Tom has gone and Henry, Cleo and Bobbie will be next.

Rustle, a hoglet who came in at 140 gms. He also has a case of mites - hogs can be more prone to them if their immune system is low - which cause sore dry hard scabs on the spineless parts of their bodies. After an injection at the vets to deal with the mites themselves, I Pedro have been gently applying baby oil so the scabs have now softened and come away. It will take some time for her body fur to grow back so she looks a little strange at the moment.

Cromer Soapbox Derby 2019

Sunday 11 August saw the utterly spectacular return of Norfolk’s Premier soapbox event.

It saw the largest roster of contestants yet - 35 from all over Norfolk, compared to only 25 last year.

Intense is the word. The terrifying 18 inch high ramp intimidated all drivers and was the tragic undoing of many a soapbox on the day.

2. from making a second attempt. His three-wheeledwheelie was brave but doomed.

James Garwood, ex winner from previous years and regular contestant, lost a wheel on his first run. This mere setback could not stop him

The ramp was not the only thing the drivers had to worry about. The chicane caused wobbly manoeuvres and many a close shave with those hazardous haybales.

I must take a moment to note the creative designs of the soapboxes. There were some familiar ones from previous years such as the orange and blue tractor-esque soapbox of contestants 4 and 39.

However there were shocking and eye-catching new ones as well. Joint winner of the 10-15 years olds, Emily Flowerdew, drove a Cromer Crab inspired soapbox. Novelty aside, this was certainly a well-built craft

and easily one of the fastest in the race. A worthy craft to represent our fair town.

Chairman Tony Shipp commented that the crowds were probably the largest yet seen. All who attended have gratitude for generously supporting the most exciting Soapbox Derby yet.

Also memorable were soapboxes themed on an ambulance, the Toy Story movies, vintage cars, a mobility scooter, and even a shopping trolley!

Most memorable of all, in my opinion, was the Top Gun inspired Jet Soapbox driven by Tom Taylor. 4. It has to be seen to be believed.

Digital Assets on Death

When it comes to digital assets, there is a common misconception that this only relates to assets such as Bitcoin or other online currency, however as there is no definitive definition of what is constitutes a 'digital asset', it could include online banking, images or videos stored on smartphone to presentations and designs.

so what happens to these digital assets and online accounts when we die and what is the value of these digital assets? Some will have little or no value, but some items, in particular photos and videos may have huge sentimental value as they will charter large portions of your life and the lives of your friends and family – you would never want to lose those, would you? Case study: With wedding season upon us, it is standard practice now that the photographer who is hired will take digital photographs, which will be available to the happy couple via a memory stick after a few weeks. It is also not uncommon for a few photographs to be sent to the couple the day after the wedding, which are usually shared on Facebook.

so what would happen if the photographer was to pass away? The photographs are the property of the photographer and if they were to die, it could mean that their executors are unable to access them if they have not been given, or do not know the password to the computer, or email account. If the photographer had been hired for many weddings and the pictures could not be accessed, this could cause a loss to the estate,

not to mention the happy couple may not be as happy with having no photographic memories of their special day. what about the happy couple? A lot of us often agree to the T&Cs without reading them. When it comes to social media accounts it is usually the case that the data on our account is not owned by us, and rather is licenced.

With the case of the happy couple who have shared their wedding pictures online, this means that if they were to pass away, their executors may not have the right to gain access to their social media accounts after they have died - so they have no way to access and store the pictures. Pictures you post to social media sites are more likely than not to then be the property of the site, rather than you. It is important to back up these pictures to a disc or print out hard copies if they are of sentimental value. This way others have easy access to the pictures on your death.

Some social media sites, like Facebook, have activated a 'Facebook Legacy' button so that the account holder can 'will' their account to another person, such as their executor. This is an alternative to sharing your account login details with your executor whilst you are alive, especially when we are continually told not to share passwords.

It should be noted that each social media site has their own process for notifying that someone has passed away, therefore the executor should check the privacy statement/T&Cs of the site. How do you share your passwords whilst protecting your passwords? If you have made a Will through a solicitors firm, they usually offer to store the document in a strong room. In with your Will you can include a document

which provides the account login details and passwords for all of your digital assets, such as online bank accounts, Paypal, Netflix and emails. Considering your digital assets when making a will Given that we are living in the digital age and the phenomenon of digital assets is likely to continue, it is good practice when making a Will to have a think about your assets and if any of these are digital assets. As mentioned above, an inventory should be left with your Will which sets out all of the accounts you have, along with the account login details.

We recommend that you review your Will every 5 years, or when you have a life changing event, such as marriage or children. This includes reviewing any document which is held with your Will or incorporated into it, such as a list of your digital assets. Remember to always read the T&Cs when creating or updating your online account! Establishing if you own the digital content or if it is licenced can be the difference between it being able to pass in accordance with your Will or not. A helpful way to remember is that digital records, such as social media accounts, do not pass with your Will or Intestacy, whereas digital property rights and interests, sometimes referred to as intellectual property, do pass. It is extremely important that you receive legal advice when making a Will, particularly when it comes to digital assets as this is a fairly new area when it comes to the law of Wills and Succession. Norfolk Nurses to take on coastal trek to help air ambulance save lives next month There’s less than one month to go until the East Anglian Air Ambulance’s flagship Trek 24 event.

On Sunday 8 September hundreds of hardy walkers will take on either a 24 mile or 24 kilometre coastal walk along the North Norfolk Coast in aid of the East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA), with both routes finishing at Holkham Hall. The ‘Four for 24’ group is made up of four Norfolk nurses who have all had experience working at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital - Natasha Pickett, Clare Johnson, Louise Langham-Hill and Bev Macfarlane. This team know first-hand how important the air ambulance is in getting seriously ill or injured patients to them as quickly as possible and are taking on the 24 kilometre walking challenge to support the charity’s mission to expand their service to fly 24 hours a day.

Bev MacFarlane, ex ED nurse at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and current nurse at Cromer Hospital, said “Supporting EAAA is very close to our hearts. All of us are ED nurses or ex-ED nurses so we have seen first-hand the benefit EAAA gives to patients who have suffered a life-threatening incident or medical emergency. Personally, my husband was knocked off his bicycle in an accident and taken to Addenbrooke’s by EAAA, so I am proud to take part in Trek 24 and do my part to raise funds for this vital charity”. Trek 24 is a brand new fundraising event which has been created as part of the charity’s fundraising drive for EAAA’s Mission 24/7 – to fly their Anglia One helicopter from Norwich 24 hours a day. So far over 200 people are signed up to take part, and tickets for the event can still be purchased until 31 August. Currently the helicopter flies from Norwich between 7am and 7pm. The charity’s expert doctors and paramedics already work 24/7, with the night shift provided via rapid response vehicle. By flying 24/7, the charity estimate they will be able to attend up to 600 more missions a year then they currently do, flying all over East Anglia, not just in Norfolk. To do this, EAAA need to raise an additional £1 million a year – on top of the £12 million they already need to keep their helicopters flying and saving lives – and aim to be operational 24/7 by helicopter in 2020 - becoming the first air ambulance charity in the East of England to do so.

Leanne Kershaw, EAAA Events Fundraiser, said “It’s vitally important to have a night-time helicopter service in the area, especially in rural Norfolk where it can take so long to get around by car. We’ve designed this event to support our mission 24/7 and have been really impressed with the number of people who have already signed up to take part and will be supporting us next month. Seeing teams like these lovely ladies entering is really special and we can’t wait to see a sea of blue EAAA supporters taking over the North Norfolk coastline next month. 7th Hempstead-by-Holt arts exhibition and sale set to attract work from many local artists

The 7th annual Hempstead Arts Exhibition and Sale is on course to attract over 150 exhibits from more than 30 talented local artists. The exhibition, which takes place over the weekend of 31 August and 1 September, will again be held in Hempstead-by-Holt Village Hall and the proceeds will aid All Saints’ Church, Hempstead funds. Holt and District Probus Club

Holt and District Probus Club met at The Feathers in Holt in early August and after the usual (excellent) meal settled down to listen to their speaker.

Unfortunately the arranged speaker had to call off, and at short notice member John Evans stepped in and related a very sad occurrence from October 1942.

The 80,000 ton liner Queen Mary, converted to a troop carrier, was ferrying about 10,000 US military personnel to the UK and was under strict orders not to stop, due to risk of U-boat attack. She was accompanied by the 4,000 ton anti-aircraft escort, the Cruiser HMS Curacoa, which was also carrying over 400 personnel. The Queen Mary was steering a zig-zag course, designed to make it difficult for U-boats and the Curacoa was having to make some speed

to catch up with her.

The Society’s annual, in-house auction took place at 12 August meeting. One hundred and eleven lots went under the hammer, ranging in value from £1 to £40 and including stamps, covers and postal history from all over the world.

Many bargains were had, but there was strong competition for some lots, with one lot (a 3d Wilding, mint, tete-beche pair) going for nine times its reserve price!

The next meeting, on 9 September, will be a presentation by Peter Boyce on Malta. Peter is a member of the Norfolk and Norwich Philatelic Society and has been welcomed as a speaker on several previous occasions.

How does it work? The information is kept in a small plastic bottle. The bottle is kept in the fridge, where the emergency services will expect to find it in the event of being called to your home.

They will know you have a bottle by 2 green cross labels. One is fixed on the inside of the front door or main entrance to your home and the other to the door of the fridge. It’s as simple as that!

I would like to thank all the rescue teams and individuals who came to the aid of my godson on 28 July.

What started as a fun swim on Sheringham’s East Beach ended in a long and complicated rescue.

I count myself lucky that all this help was at hand and worked so well together to eventually get him out of the rocks.

We will all be eternally grateful for everyone’s unselfish attention for the four hours it took to get him free.

Everyone who helped that evening is a hero in our eyes.

This accident happened to a responsible adult who was assisting his 10 year old child up the steps. A strong cross current knocked him off the steps and into the rocks where his foot became jammed.

Following surgery he is now recovering at home.

THANKYOU to you all and to anyone reading this, please remember that the sea MUST be respected and those rocks can be very dangerous in a strong swell.

COASTWATCHERS AT CROMER

The National Coastwatch Institution (otherwise known as National Coastwatch or abbreviated to NCI), this year celebrating its 25th anniversary, is a voluntary organisation set up in 1994 to restore a visual watch along UK shores after many small Coastguard stations closed due to Her Majesty’s Coastguard reorganization.

During that year, two fishermen lost their lives off the Cornish coast below a recently closed Coastguard lookout. As a result, in December 1994, local people decided to reopen the lookout and voluntarily continue coastal surveillance. On the 3rd February 1995, NCI Bass Point on the Lizard was officially opened, and NCI was born.

Now one of 54 stations around the coast of England and Wales, NCI Cromer watchkeepers provide the eyes and ears along the coast from East Runton Beach to Cromer Pier and 10 nautical miles out to sea carrying out visual surveillance, particularly observing the activities of vulnerable persons and monitoring radio channels, so conducting a listening watch in poor visibility.

Watchkeepers are trained to deal with

emergencies, offering a variety of skills and experience and full training by NCI ensures that rigorous standards are met. A close liaison exists between NCI and HMCG and other agencies within the Search and Rescue community.

Thanks to the philanthropy of Sir James Dyson, who has graciously accepted an invitation to become the Station’s Honorary Patron, together with significant donations from the Sheringham Shoal Community Fund and the Victory Housing Trust, the Coastwatch members have been able to fund a new modular building to replace the weather-beaten and unsafe unit which had to be removed from the site in February this year on health and safety grounds. A renewed Planning Decision Notice was kindly issued by the NNDC in July after due process. Fabrication work on the new building has commenced.

Whilst technology and sophisticated satellite search and rescue systems used by HMCG are aids to improved safety at sea, a computer cannot spot a distress flare, an overturned boat, a yachtsman or water sports enthusiast in difficulty, or children or adults in trouble whilst swimming. Other vulnerable activities like diving, kite and wind surfing, canoeing or kayaking are made safer with visual surveillance.

Situated on the cliff top in Beach Road, one mile west of the pier which appears in close-up with their high-power optics, Cromer NCI watchkeepers have reported many such incidents to HMCG or other appropriate agency in the 5 years they have been active. Although NCI is an unpaid, uniformed volunteer organisation, it approaches its business in a professional manner, maintaining a duty of care to the vulnerable and the distressed. The pro-active nature of NCI operations enables them to forewarn the Coastguard and other Search and Rescue and emergency services at the earliest opportunity in order to preserve life.

NCI Cromer is now recruiting. Can you spare 3 hours a week; why not become a volunteer watchkeeper. Come and learn the ropes; get to know your port from your starboard and latitude from longitude! North Norfolk Hockey Club breaks national record

Founded in 2014, North Norfolk Hockey Club plays a major role in the Norfolk community by bringing people of all ages together through sport. The club has members ranging in age from 4 years of age into their 70’s and there is a refreshing 50/50 split by gender. The club has recently invested considerably in training its members to become England Hockey accredited coaches and on Sunday 7 July an incredible 17% of the club’s adult membership qualified as coaches, a national record.
