This year’s 1940s weekend was roaring explosion of blitz spirit.

The sinkhole long forgotten, Sheringham’s high street filled to the brim with the nostalgic colours and evocative sounds of a town fully embracing the best of its past.

What an extraordinary assortment of entertainments this year.

Songs reverberated in the streets from singing groups and singers such as The Knightingales and Sarah Mai. For a bit of ‘swing a wing’ there was authentic big band music from the Skyliner Big Band and others.

And speaking of music, for anyone who fancied a bit of Jits and Jive, members of the public could put their feet out to dance to the tunes of another age.

I saw incredible dancing, at Sheringham station and on the high street to put Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers to shame! (alright… maybe not that good, but it was truly marvellous!)

You may want to bring a folding chair each, rather than standing for 3+ hours!

If you have a telescope and tripod do bring them along, as well as your bins.

A flask of hot drink and a snack may be a good idea. Waterproof and warm clothing if the weather looks inclement and maybe an ID book. We will be recording the number and species of all the birds we see and the direction they are flying for each 10 minute period throughout the 3 hour time frame.

This will be the 5th coordinated seawatch organised by the NENBC, and the 4th held in October. All the previous events have been well supported and most importantly enjoyed by all the participants, so do please come along to whichever venue you fancy. Facilities vary at each location, so a list of the equipment you might need is shown below.

The objects of this survey are: • To introduce NENBC members to the joys of seawatching.

• To help NENBC members improve their skill at identifying birds in flight at sea.

• To map the likely route of wildfowl, seabirds and waders as they fly around the coast.

• To estimate the speed of flight of some of the species recorded.

• To assess the effect of weather conditions and tide on the rate and timing of passage.

On Wednesday 4 September, members of Weybourne WI enjoyed a fascinating talk and slide show given by Jo and Ian Mutton. They are involved with Reed People, a charitable trust affiliated to the Lighthouse Church in Sheringham, which helps people from the village of Lumpewe in Uganda.

Jo and Ian have been visiting Uganda on a regular basis for the past 10 years, accompanied by numerous volunteers with a variety of skills and together they have helped the local people by providing training and assistance with many projects.

The local school has particularly benefited from their visits with teacher training, help to maintain the building, construction of desks, benches and book cases, plus provision of uniform and football kit.

A rainwater collection and filtration unit has been built in the village and local women have been taught to knit and crochet.

‘Sewathons’ at the Lighthouse Church have helped to create a variety of garments, knitted toys and other items, which are all transported in suitcases to Uganda.

Volunteers fund themselves to go on the visits and any donations made to the charity go directly towards the various projects in Lumpewe.

The next trip is planned for 17 October, when a party of eight volunteers hope to continue with the work that has been carried out so far.

A vote of thanks was given by Pat King. We all agreed that Jo and Ian were to be commended for their dedication.

NAAFI at Weybourne provided a taste of the past with wartime rations and even that king of processed meat cuisine - the immortal SPAM sandwich. Modern microwave dinners can’t possibly compete with such authentic excellence.

And what an incredible range of costumes and characters - austere nurses, dames with stunning victory rolls, and many a dungareed woman ordnance worker to make Rosie the Riveter 9. proud.

Among the men we had Seasoned Generals and Green Recruits, Scots Guard and Home Guard, Navy and Army, and possibly even a gangster and a jerry or two.

For those enthusiastic of vintage vehicles, there were countless to be seen and enjoyed.

Trucks, tanks, and motorbikes and even a fighter plane at Holt Station. What were once mean, green, killing machines are now peacefully retired (or reconstructed) as exemplary works of engineering from their time. We offer thanks to the Military Vehicle Trust and others for providing so many

fantabulous vehicles, including the vintage buses that ferried thousands to and from Holt and Sheringham.

When the North Norfolk Railway first organised the event all those years ago, who could have predicted the mammoth gathering it would become?

Now Sheringham Carnival is involved and the event has grown bigger and bigger.

Indeed, demand was so high at Sheringham Station, on the Saturday in particular, that many were unfortunately forced to wait for a second train to Weybourne and Holt!

Autumn at the Museum of the Broads

This autumn we will be offering boat trips every day we are open - Sunday to Fridays. Tuesdays to Thursdays you can catch a bit of steam with our Victorian Launch Falcon. On Fridays, Sundays and Mondays, why not catch our brand new electric launch Marsh Harrier?

The railway exhibition has been very popular this year and it’s been great to see both Honing Station and Felmingham Station putting on events for Heritage open days in September. Why not come along and find out more about the railway which brought both holidaymakers and was also used for evacuees and troops. It’s a fascinating story and this is your last chance as we close on Friday 1st November.

Ladies who Sing - The renowned local choral group ‘Ladies who Sing’,

Rock Bodham Quizzes

under the direction of Janet Kelsey, will give a concert in St Andrew’s Church, Holt on Saturday 19 October at 7.30pm. The group is in demand as one of the leading chamber choirs in the region and is notable for its committed and polished performances.

The programme will feature music from 16th to 21st centuries and contains spirituals, folk songs, popular songs and solos, as well as some of the greatest pieces ever written for female voices by Elgar, Schubert and Gjielo. Mark Jones, organist at St Andrew’s, will also play a piano solo. Whatever your musical tastes you will surely be delighted by the offerings of this excellent group.

Admission free. Retiring collection in aid of the church and the choir.

The Rock Bodham/Red Hart Inn harvest themed quiz was a great success.

Over 45 keen quizzers were in attendance. With questions ranging from hymns to hip hop, Mills and Boon to Mills or Boon, there was something for everyone.

All profits from these events go toward the Rock Bodham good causes and the organisers would like to thank people for their generosity.

The next event is a Hallowe'en quiz to be held on Friday 25 October at 8pm at the Red Hart.

So if you know your ghosts from your ghouls and your Banshee form your Bain Marie then come and give it a go.

The 1940s weekend saw Tesco invite dancers from Ceroc Fusion to come and dance outside their store and help raise funds for Help for Heroes (totalled £250 raised). The Ceroc dancers all got into the theme of the weekend and dressed in 1940s style also decorating their dance area with a radio bunker and some original 1940s items.

Music was played each day from that era and attracted lots of attention with many taking photos whilst passengers waiting on the railway platform were also kept entertained.

September brings the hugely popular 1940s Weekend to Sheringham with civil and military vehicles, music, food, steam hauled trains and visitors encouraged to dress up in styles from the period to be ‘transported back in time’.

If you would like a glimpse of the reality behind this picture, do come along to Sheringham Little Theatre on Wednesday 2 October when professional Norfolk historian Neil Storey will be presenting his talk on “North Norfolk at War”.

With the declaration of war 80 years ago on 3 September 1939, only 21 years after the previous “war to end all wars”, Neil will discuss how Sheringham and North Norfolk were transformed into a fortified barrier to resist probable Nazi invasion. The effects locally of call-ups, rationing, establishment of Home Guard units and the ever present gas masks will be covered.

Neil gave us an excellent talk last year on Norfolk at the end of WW1, and this coming event promises to be equally enthralling. Tickets can be bought from the Little Theatre 01263 822347 or at the door on the night. We look forward to seeing you there!

SHIPWRECK - a mixed media open art competition

Secret Postcard Art Auction & Exhibition

The annual Coast Arts open art competition has become one of the key elements of the festival.

at Thorpe Market Church, NR11 8UA on 18 -20 October 12noon - 4pm.

This is a wonderful opportunity to bid for anonymous postcard sized works of art. You may find you have won a bid for a valuable art work.

All funds raised will go towards improving the exhibition facilities at Thorpe Market Church.

Encouraging artists from across the spectrum, the competition inspires both professional and amateur artists to create unique works for display, for sale and for fun! The theme for the 2019 competition is SHIPWRECK – in particular the legendary Fernebo wreck.

Norfolk photographer Richard Bloom’s winning image of ‘Bressingham Gardens in Autumn’ in the ‘Beautiful Gardens’ category is on display, alongside wonderful landscape photographs from the ‘Breathing Spaces’ category, which is sponsored by the National Trust.

The overall winner this year was Jill Welham, who drew on a technique of yesteryear known as cyanotype where two chemicals are mixed together to produce an extraordinary exposure of the Allium entitled ‘Fireworks’.

Located in the tranquil surroundings of the Bower Garden, over 40 pictures are on display celebrating gardens and plants from across the globe. The Upcher family who owned Sheringham Park were enthusiastic plant collectors. Henry Morris Upcher was one of the sponsors of plant hunter Ernest Wilson who brought many specimens back from China in the early 20th century. The international nature of the exhibition therefore does sit well within the garden setting at Sheringham, which features plants from at least five continents.

Council to install electric charge points in public car parks Project aims to make electric vehicles accessible

nearby properties do not have their own off-street parking, the Council aims to provide charging points and make EVs more accessible to all residents and visitors.

Additionally, the proposal will support the economies of local towns as the charging points will be available to visitors to Council car parks, as well as residents.

The project forms part of NNDC’s commitment to environmental sustainability, with the Council seeking to make its own operations carbon neutral by 2030.

Cllr Sarah Bütikofer, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “We are delighted to bring forward this new initiative which will see 38 Electric Vehicle Chargepoints introduced across the District. This is just the first step on the Council’s path towards delivering our new ‘greener’ agenda. Whilst we are working to reduce our own Carbon footprints we want to help residents and visitors to play their part too.”

NNDC’s Cabinet has approved a proposal which will see the installation of Electric Vehicle Chargepoints (EVCs) in seven car parks across the district.

The project, estimated to cost around £250,000, will be funded jointly by the Council and The Office for Low Emissions Vehicles (OLEV), a cross-Government team which aims to promote the use of electric vehicles by helping councils to provide the necessary infrastructure to allow their introduction.

Subject to the OLEV funding, it is expected that EVCs will be installed in NNDC owned car parks in Sheringham, Cromer, Holt, Fakenham, Wells and North Walsham, as well as some at the Council offices in Cromer. The installation should be complete by spring 2020.

The proposal aims to meet the expected rise in demand for electric vehicles from 200,000 to 6 million on the road by 2030. It has been identified that most current Electric Vehicle users will charge their vehicles at home. By installing these facilities in areas where many

Dear Margaret,

Thank you so much for publishing an article prior to the Gresham Craft Fair and Classic Car Show on 20 July.

Despite daunting weather forecasts, we had a mostly dry if somewhat windy day and many visitors enjoyed what was on offer, so much so that a total of £2355 was raised towards the urgent repairs needed on All Saints Church in Gresham.

Through your columns, I would like to extend heartfelt thanks to all craft stall holders who brought a wonderful range of quality goods for customers to enjoy; to our teams of volunteers who worked tirelessly and cheerfully, sometimes in difficult conditions, to produce hotdogs, strawberry teas, sort out signage, parking and so on; to the Broadland Ukes whose performances were enthusiastically applauded, with many singing along and finally to the classic car owners who brought their marvellous vehicles despite the weather.

We are also grateful to all those businesses and individuals who contributed raffle prizes, and those villagers who made the produce for our ‘Made in Gresham’ stall.

All in all, it was a monumental effort to create such an enjoyable event, and it was really pleasing to be able to add such a large sum to our funds.

Our series of Autumn evening fundraising Concerts begin on 28 September in our church, when Tale Dolce Musica, a Baroque group of instrumentalist led by a superb soprano, perform a varied programme. Tickets £10 from Julia on 01263 577794 or Helen 01263 577849. Refreshments included.

On 26 October the Sheringham Shantymen will perform a concert of songs linked with the sea. Again, tickets will be £10 including refreshments. Numbers strictly limited, so get your tickets early.

On 9 November, Songs of Courage and Good Cheer will be performed by a local choir. This concert is free, but donations would be welcome. Just come along to the church for a 7.30pm start. Again there will be refreshments.

Sheringham Lifeboat ‘The Oddfellows’ B 818 Service Launch – Sunday 15 September

At 12.08pm on Sunday 15 September a young lady entered the Lifeboat station to report that her finance had left Weybourne at 10.15am to swim to Sheringham and had not yet arrived and was overdue.

Following a very brief discussion with Humber Coastguard the lifeboat was launched at 12.13pm and tasked to undertake a foreshore line search back towards Weybourne to try to locate the swimmer.

At 12.18pm the lifeboat found the swimmer on the beach about 300 metres west of the Lifeboat Station where he had swum ashore after having difficulty making headway.

The lifeboat crew noted that the swimmer was cold and shaking badly and decided he needed to recover and he was wrapped in a foil blanket and taken to the Lifeboat Station where has was gradually warmed up and further assessed by paramedics and eventually left to walk away with his friends.

Salmon and broad bean chowder This summer has been exceptional for fruit and vegetables from the Grove gardens, and as always John’s beans are running riot.

We usually spend hours in exhaustive bean planning meetings to try to figure out the best way to get them onto the menu, and this summer we have been using them in a wonderful cockle chowder with our superb pan-fried halibut.

This salmon and bean chowder is probably

a little more simple and quicker to make; however any nice thick chowder makes an excellent accompaniment to fish dishes in general.

1 stick of celery ½ leek Handful of cooked new potatoes Small tin of sweetcorn 100g broad beans

200g salmon (diced or whole) 10g chopped dill Salt and pepper (to taste) ½ lemon (to taste) 200ml cream 50ml white wine

1. Chop all the veg into thin slices and bite-sized pieces 2. Saute the veg with the salmon, dill and lemon 3. Deglaze the pan with white wine, add the cream and cook until the veg is tender and the salmon cooked.

4. Serve with lemon and crusty bread

Keith Skipper joins Sheringham Shantymen at Cromer Pier

On Thursday 17 October the Sheringham Shantymen, more than ably supported by Cromer’s very own Keith Skipper, will be performing at The Pavilion Theatre on Cromer Pier commencing at 7.30 pm. This will be the fifth in a series of charity concerts performed by this local and renowned group.

The concert will be in aid of the local RNLI stations at Cromer and Sheringham and also Nelson’s Journey.

We all know of the good work that is carried out by the volunteers of the RNLI, both the crews and shore-based helpers who make up 95% of the total workforce and all the money each year comes from public through donations and legacies left in peoples wills.

Perhaps less well known but equally necessary is the work carried out by local charity, Nelson’s Journey.

Record numbers attend Sheringham inflatables. The week was rounded off with a BeachLife activity week beach scavenger hunt on the Friday. Evening

The BeachLife activity week for children and young people on Sheringham cliff top and beach at the end of August was another huge success, attracting around 320 children and young people, which is more than ever before.

This was the eighth successive summer that BeachLife has taken place, and each year the event has built on the success of the previous years. It is a joint venture by the churches in Sheringham, aimed at engaging with local youngsters as well as holidaymakers. Feedback from parents and children has been very positive and encouraging.

The activities each day included the ‘Beach Special’, where all ages came together at the cliff-top marquee on The Leas for music, silly games, drama and challenges, and to introduce the day’s theme, which this year was Epic Explorers. The gunge tank featured again this year, with one of the leaders getting covered in

slime each day.

The mornings also included the ‘Going Deeper’ sessions where the children and young

people split into age-groups to explore that day’s theme in more depth before breaking for lunch. There was also a pop-up café offering free teas and coffees to parents of the children who were attending.

The afternoons comprised a family tide fight, a beach sculpture of the BeachLife logo, the egg parachute challenge, outdoor games and giant

activities for young people included the return of the popular ‘Sheropoly’ trail around the town and swimming at the local Splash pool.

Peter Skivington, from the organising team, said “We’ve had a fabulous week, with the opportunity to impact well over 300 young lives with the message that Jesus loves them and cares about them. That has to be worth celebrating. There are around 60 volunteers on the team, all working together as a great team to share the Good News with the youngsters in the glorious setting of the clifftops and beach in Sheringham.”

Next year’s event is expected to run during the last week of the summer holidays again, starting on 1 September.

Sheringham youngsters will not have to wait until next summer to continue the fun, however, as the team are already starting to plan an event on October 31, and another during February half-term.

On Monday 9 September, Sheringham and District Philatelic Society were delighted to welcome Peter Boyce (Norfolk and Norwich Philatelic Society) to share with us part of his excellent collection of stamps from Malta.

Peter had collected Commonwealths stamps since childhood but specialized in Malta following a visit there in 1994.

The first stamps (1/2d) were produced in 1859 when Malta was a British colony. These were overprinted Victorian GB stamps, of which Peter had some examples. The first pictorial stamps were issued in 1889, featuring sailing ships, Valetta Harbour and St. Paul, among other subjects. Peter’s display included examples of stamps overprinted with the words “Self Government”, Postage and Revenue stamps overprinted with “Postage”, war time issues and those relating to

the Knights of St. John and continued up to modern day issues e.g. on cats or birds, which he found less interesting.

Peter showed his love of history as he described the background to the various issues on display and he held our attention throughout!

Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club

On Tuesday 3 September, after an excellent lunch, Gill Blanchard delivered an absorbing talk called ‘Behind The Scenes Working For ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’’.

Gill works as a professional house, family and local historian. She has carried out research for the popular BBC series, also appearing on two episodes (Jonnie Peacock and Mary Berry).

The production team does some research but many local researchers, people like Gill, are engaged to do much of the background work.

Unless researchers are to appear on the programme, they are unaware of the celebrity’s identity.

For the Mary Berry programme, Gill used many sources, such as local newspapers and trade directories, and visited numerous places, including locating family gravestones. She discovered that Mary had a baker ancestor, Robert Houghton, who had his own shop in Ber Street, Norwich. Apparently, according to the inmates of the local workhouse, the bread he supplied was of poor quality!

Holt and District Probus Club

The Feathers in Holt hosted the September meeting of Holt and District Probus Club. The 3-course meal having been enjoyed, there was a bit of re-arrangement of furniture to make room for the speaker.

What we see on television is merely a snapshot, much being left out as the programme-makers focus on the story they think the public will be interested in, emphasising dramatic elements and the big reveal. Gill confirmed that the celebrities are genuinely surprised by the revelations.

On behalf of the 34 members present, our Chairman, Dave Williams, thanked Gill for her fascinating talk.

At short notice, Steve Dyer introduced members to the noble sport of fencing. Steve has been a tutor/coach for some years and started by showing the equipment. Most obvious are the three types of weapons used – foil, épée and sabre which may often have electrical contacts to record scoring ‘hits’.

Also important are the padded protective clothing worn, the metal foil mask and special gloves.

We shall next meet at the Links Hotel in West Runton on Tuesday 1 October when Sue and Guy Morton will give a talk entitled ‘Bell Ringing in Norfolk’. Also, we will be having a Coffee Morning on Tuesday 8 October from 10.30am at the Hole-in-One Sports Bar at the Links Hotel for non-members to come along and find out about the club informally. Assisted by Andrew Pearcey, Steve then demonstrated many of the techniques and movements in fencing - “parry” and “lunge” and others. The contest is (usually)in three 3 minute bouts with a 1 minute rest in between bouts. Often a match lasts until a given number of ‘hits’ have been scored – perhaps 5 or 15.

The uninitiated do not realise what an energetic sport fencing can be. A vote of thanks was proposed by Bob Ward followed by generous applause from the members!

Sheringham Stroke Support Group restarted at the beginning of September after our Summer break.

One of our members Keith Wills spoke about his youth as a cadet in Exeter joining St Johns Ambulance at the age of 13 and especially going to the Exeter football matches and speedway at weekends on duty.

Keith went on to do a six year apprenticeship with the Western Times Company deferring his call up for National Service in the 1950s. He then received a typed letter saying his time had come to serve his country promising him 4/6pence a day with a deduction of 6.4 pence for National Insurance plus a timetable of trains to get him to the interview. The letter also said that he was advised to start a savings account.

As a young man he wanted to go into the Marines but found out he had to serve for three years so he joined the Army for two years going to Aldershot then Netley near Southampton to train in the Medical Core, later specialising in Mental Health and psychiatric care. Their unit was behind the enormous Royal Victoria Military Hospital which Queen Victoria had opened in the 1800s and visited several times with Prince Albert viewing its towers from the Solent.

Keith received another letter to say he was going to Cyprus but he ended up going straight to Singapore's Military Hospital which had a large football pitch behind it. Patients were old regular soldiers as well as young men like himself all needing specialist care and understanding. When well enough they were sent home in fours with escorts.

Keith finished his two years National Service coming home on the military ship called ‘Nevasa’ which took several weeks to reach the UK. He had visited Hong Kong, Peking, Shankai, Kuala Lumpa, India & Ceylon (now called Shri Lanka) calling in at Aden and other military bases, just to mention a few of the interesting places he visited in his own time. Arriving home he joined the EDP as a printer and then went on to the Eastern Daily Press which he retired from in 1995.

Q&A on Making a Will

There is a common misconception that Wills are only for older people, or maybe an individual doesn't have enough assets to worry about needing a Will, however if you have personal assets such as savings or a home it is important to have a valid Will in place, no matter what your age.

Q. at what point in their life can someone make a will? and at what point should they make a will?

Provided you have testamentary capacity, you are able to make a Will if you are 18 or over.

There are situations where you can make a Will under the age of 18, such as if you are a soldier in the military. You should consider making a Will, regardless of your age, if you wish to leave your personal possessions, house, money or investments to a particular person or people.

Q. what are your thoughts on the idea that wills are only for older people?

Wills are not just for older people, younger people may receive inheritance, own a property alone, or with a friend or partner, or be married with or without children, however these are all circumstances in which it is important to consider who your assets will pass to in the event of your death, and if the intestacy rules reflect your wishes.

Q. what advice would you give to someone who thinks they don't own enough to

make a will?

It is a common misconception that you have to have a certain amount in the bank or own a property/investments to be able to make a Will.

Even a bank account with a 'small' amount in will be paid in accordance with the intestacy rules and with modern blended families this may not benefit the person(s) you intend.

A Will doesn't just name beneficiaries, but it also appoints executors (those with the authority to actually deal with your estate on your death). Appointing executors means there should be no ambiguity over who can administer (deal with) your estate. A Will can also deal with your funeral wishes, again making your wishes clear in an already difficult time.

Q. the prospect of making a will can seem overwhelming, how do you help clients with that?

We take the time to discuss your situation and take your instructions, before preparing a draft Will and explaining, in everyday language, what the Will means.

Help Sheringham church prepare for Uganda mission Lighthouse Community Church in Sheringham will be hosting another ‘Sewathon’ at the end of this month to provide goods for women in Uganda, prior to a visit there from a team from Lighthouse next month.

The Sheringham church supports a school and church project in a small village called Lumpewe in Uganda, and has set up a charity called Reed People to help with developing the school, and provide necessary training and equipment.

A team of eight local people will be heading off to Uganda on 17 October for ten days to embark on their latest support mission.

Jo Mutton, from the project, explains “Haley Griggs and myself will be providing reusable sanitary wear for the women and showing them how to make their own items. We will undertake a feeding programme for the community as well as supporting teachers in class. Derek Baldry, Andy Holt, Martin Fleetcroft and Ian Mutton will engage with the men of the community, supporting them holistically and working alongside them on local projects. Val Ridley along with the local school nurse will continue offering basic health checks/treatment on the village children.”

In order to prepare for the visit, there will be another Sewathon at Lighthouse, on Saturday 28 September, from 9am until 1pm. The main task will be to make drawstring bags which can hold personal items, as this offers the Ugandan women privacy, protection and dignity. Anyone who wishes to be involved is warmly welcome to come along and help, whether or not they can sew.

Elaine Fisher, from Reed People, says “We want to thank everyone for making our previous Sewathons such industrious, happy events. Due to popular demand the Sewathon is back, albeit a mini one – It will just be the morning this year, not all day or all night! We'll be making drawstring bags for the girls and ladies and

we will be filling them with knickers, a bra and reusable sanitary towels. These will be packed up on the day for transportation to Uganda with our team in October. If you are able to donate knickers, or vacuum packing bags for transportation, that would be wonderful. But above all - bring yourself! We really appreciate what our volunteers do to help us make a difference to this community in Uganda.”

Free refreshments will be available during the morning, but any donations to cover costs will be welcome. There will be no children’s facilities available this time.

Every Step Counts – Coastal trek a hit for Air Ambulance especially challenging.

Among the 24 mile trekkers were several former EAAA patients and EAAA Critical Care Paramedic, Rod Wells. Some 24 mile participants even chose to run the route, or run a mile then walk a mile. On average, it took the 24 milers eight hours to walk the 24 mile route, including stopping for breaks.

On Sunday 8 September more than 200 people took to the Norfolk coastline to complete either a 24 mile or 24 kilometre walk for the East Anglian Air Ambulance. This is the first time EAAA have held the Trek 24 event – designed to raise awareness and funds for the charity’s mission to fly 24/7 from the end of next year.

The Trek 24 event is expected to raise over £70,000 for the charity, which needs to raise an additional £1 million each year (bringing the total funds needed to £13 million a year) in order to develop and deliver a 24 hour helicopter emergency service in East Anglia.

Taking in the stunning Norfolk coastline, 123 people braved the longer walk, from West Runton to Holkham Hall, over Beeston Bump and along a great distance of shingle, which made this walk

The 24 kilometre walk started at Cley, continuing along the Stiffkey salt marshes and through Wells before finishing at Holkham.

90 people completed the 24K route and on average walkers took four – five hours to complete the shorter walk, including stopping for breaks. Among the 24K trekkers were former EAAA patients, the EAAA Aftercare Team and EAAA CEO, Patrick Peal.

The EAAA Trekkers were blessed with a bright sunny day with a refreshing cool breeze.

The walkers were kept well energised and motivated by volunteers at several cheer and refreshment points along the way, with a hot meal waiting for them at the finish line in the grounds of Holkham Hall.

Alison Brett, Head of Aftercare at EAAA, who completed the 24K walk, said “It’s been a wonderful day. This has been a great event for some of our patients to aim for in their recovery and I’m really pleased to have completed the 24K walk with some of my team. We even had a former patient who has overcome several injuries complete the 24 mile walk – just incredible. I was so pleased to be there for him at the finish line.
