A Poem for Halloween

All Hallows’ Eve All Hallows’ Eve will soon be here, When children go out, spreading ‘terror’ and ‘fear’. Collecting treats from neighbours and friends, Whilst dressed up in costumes as darkness descends. As night falls, the air fills with weird ghoulish howls Of werewolves and warlocks, witches and owls. All kinds of fiendish creatures appear, To the neighbours with whom they’ve been friendly all year! Sweets are dispensed by kind, liberal hands, To delighted young children who make these demands … “we’ll play tricks on you, unless you pay us off.” So tricking or treating is just a trade-off. Thank goodness this mayhem comes just once a year, Then all little horrors and ghosts disappear! Frances Wraight

Weather with Ned Nimbus

The past three months never really settled down - fine weather in short spells with hot conditions then average conditions although, at times, long periods without rain - but once that had corrected itself it didn’t know when to stop!

September did not live up to predictions, being a lot less influenced by high pressure so less settled and wetter as the month went on.

WE ARE RECRUITING

The next three months look to repeat the pressure theme of the past six months with the weather very much influenced by the Atlantic so changeable and with a variance in temperatures as winds switch from warmer quarters to cooler quarters with each passing weather system.

Maintenance Manager The centre is looking for a general maintenance person to upkeep buildings and site including safety checks and basic maintenance. Any cold outbreaks are not high on the radar - typical weather for us about sums it up. Ned Nimbus

Playing For Cake (Community Interest Company) based in Sheringham Massive thanks to all the PFC team - Thanks all round! who worked hard to organise and

Sheringham Carnival Committee has awarded Playing for Cake £50 as thanks for organising this year’s Percussion-making and Giant Family Musical Crossword Events!

Both events formed part of the Carnival week’s official programme. It was wonderful to see residents, holidaymakers and people of all ages coming together to take part. David Moore and his team did an excellent job organising materials and the ‘making stations’ (thanks Sheringham Town Council and Norfolk County Council for the grants!). Hazel Fielding and other team members helped people decorate their newly made instruments and Dave Steward’s drums were a tremendous hit (pardon the pun!)!

The percussion-making event ended with a specially-themed music-making session ‘Rain at the Seaside!’ which was held outside on the lawn in front of St Peter’s Church Hall, led by Tina Blaber, Brian Eade and Amanda Crofts. Once again, the activities were supported by delicious cakes and refreshments organised by Jenny and Adrian Penniston.

deliver these events. Thanks to the Carnival Committee and their team of volunteers for all their support which helped make the events happen and for all the hard work they do all year round to help keep Sheringham such a vibrant place to live or visit! We are lucky to have such a tremendous community spirit in Sheringham!

Holt and District Probus Club

After tucking into a delightful meal (including lamb shank) at The Feathers in Holt, Holt and District Probus Club members were treated to a fascinating talk by Ralph Jackman.

Ralph, who was born and bred and still lives in Norfolk, has recently published an historical novel ‘Agrippa’s Wake’ set in ancient Rome in the time of Octavian. But Ralph’s talk was not fiction but shed light on the realities of life at that time. He titled it ‘How to be a Roman Emperor’ and it was about Octavian, his life and times.

Born in 63 BC, when his great uncle Julius Caesar was assassinated in 43 BC Octavian was named as his heir. With Mark Antony and Marcus Lepidus, he set out to defeat the assassins of Caesar. With that achieved, with due despatch, Lepidus was driven into exile and Antony after being defeated then committed suicide which left Octavian, also known to us as Caesar Augustus, to organise Rome with himself as military dictator – though he preferred to be known as First Citizen of the State. He went on to rule until his death in AD 14.

Ralph’s talk was accompanied by pictures projected onto a screen and was it has to be said, a lively and engaging talk.

Free Parking for Remembrance Sunday

Local choir to perform East Anglian premiere of new Requiem

North Norfolk District Council to offer free parking across district on Sunday 10 November. Parking in North Norfolk District Council-owned car parks will be free on Remembrance Sunday. In response to local community wishes, North Norfolk District Council will waive parking fees all day on Remembrance Sunday. Information will be displayed in advance in all car parks to give notice of free parking. The payment machines will be covered up on the day to make it clear to users that the car parks will not require payment. Parking charges in North Norfolk District Council car parks usually apply from 8am to 6pm. Cllr. Sarah Bütikofer, Leader of the Council, said “As in previous years, North Norfolk District Council will be supporting Remembrance Day commemorations by ensuring that parking is free in all District Council-owned car parks on Sunday 10 November for those wishing to pay their respects.”

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society’s 2019 – 20 season begins at 7pm on Saturday 23 November in St Peter’s Church Sheringham with Songs Ancient & Modern, a lovely blend of old and new music including popular works by Mozart, Haydn and Fauré.

David Ballard conducts Sheringham and Cromer Choral singers in concert The programme also includes the East Anglian premiere of an exciting new Requiem by Dorset composer, Matthew Coleridge who comments "Requiem is my first major composition and most frequently performed work. Far from being inspired by, or in memory of, a lost loved one, I wrote the majority of it in the months following the birth of my son. I hope this brings an optimistic, affirming and uplifting mood to the music. I was determined to avoid any clichés of angelic harps or fires of hell, and chose to take a more human and earthly approach - something more akin to the Requiems of the middle ages and Renaissance. Much of the writing is in the manner of Gregorian chant, with numerous melodic ‘threads’ woven together into a rich tapestry of sound. The solo cello became a vital part of the music from some of the earliest drafts, providing a counterpoint of light against dark. Whenever the choir are singing about loss or sorrow, the cello sings a song of hope and comfort." The late Sir Neville Mariner said of the work "a valuable addition to 21st century choral repertoire". Other works on the programme will be Joseph Haydn Insanae et Vanae Curae, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Missa Brevis in Bflat K.275, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Ave Verum Corpus and Gabriel Fauré Cantique de Jean Racine.

The concert will be conducted by the Society’s musical director, David Ballard with soloists Zaira Palumbo, soprano; Graham Northwood; counter-tenor, Simon Mulligan, tenor and Andrew Weeks, bass plus organist, Philip Adams. Tickets cost £15 on the door, £12 in advance, under 18s FREE from Sheringham Little Theatre Box Office telephone: 01263 822347 boxoffice@sheringhamlittletheatre.com or online at www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com. It’s Full Autumn out there and that can only mean one thing: the return of possibly the best United Kingdom bread and butter pudding in the European Union (as you read this there may not be time for anyone to prove otherwise!)

The secret ingredient is Ann Graveling’s Silver Medal World Championship-winning marmalade, with which residents of Overstrand Road are very familiar thanks to the burgeoning roadside marmalade pit-stop outside No97. In fact people have driven for hundreds of miles for this very spread and, if it’s all gone, disgruntled shoppers have been known to lay siege to the front door demanding replenishments.

Overstrand Road is often brought to a complete standstill due to impatient marmalade-hunters, and although Ann cleverly shifted the blame for recent congestion onto Anglian Water we all know the real story.

Arguably the best way to try this legendary marmalade is within Reis’s equally legendary bread and butter pudding – available on the menu every night, 6-9pm – 01263 512412 to book your table!

Bread and Butter Pudding

ingredients: 1 x 800g loaf of brioche (two if not using croissants) 3 x croissants (helps if not absolutely fresh) 200g white chocolate 4 eggs (whole) 2 oranges (zest) 350ml cream 100ml milk 100g caster sugar Small jar of Silver Medal-winning marmalade (available from 97 Overstrand Road) 150g cranberries (dried)

Method Line a 32cm brownie tray with baking paper

Slice the brioche into slices approximately ½ cm thick

Melt your white chocolate

Place layers of brioche in the bottom of the tray, overlapping slightly

Add a reasonable amount of marmalade, cranberries and chocolate over the brioche

Thinly cut your croissants and follow the same process as above, alternating croissants / brioche, until full

In a bowl, whisk your caster sugar, eggs, milk, cream and orange zest until mixed sufficiently

Add the mixture to your tray in drips and drabs until it had all soaked in and leave overnight in the fridge

Preheat oven to 160dc, 320df, gas mark 3

Cover with baking paper, then tin foil, bake for 45 minutes on middle shelf, remove tin foil and paper and return to oven for a further fifteen minutes or until golden brown and risen.

Come to La Ferté St Aubin with the Wells Twinning Group

Sheringham-Muzillac Twinning Association

The annual exchange visit between Sheringham and its French Twin Town of Muzillac in Southern Brittany took place from 11-16 September.

Feel like a fun trip to France in excellent company? This is your opportunity!

Fourteen twinning members were warmly welcomed by their French hosts. Vice Chairman Sue Nelson on behalf of Sheringham’s Mayor Madeleine Ashcroft and Muzillac’s Mayor Jo Brohan formally introduced this year’s exchange at a gathering in the Mairie. Among all present was a strong feeling that despite the British political situation, the notion of solidarity and friendship between the two towns remains firmer than ever.

The Wells-next-the-Sea Twinning Group will travel by coach to visit the delightful town of La Ferté between Tuesday 14 April and Sunday 19 April 2020. Be assured of sheer enjoyment, outstanding cultural visits and plenty of mouth-watering French cuisine in a variety of venues. Come and see the châteaux and the quaint villages of the Sologne area whilst making new friends and memories. You will stay with French hosts renowned for giving the warmest of welcomes. French and English are spoken throughout the holiday as friendships are forged and enjoyed. The visit will end with a sumptuous Gala Meal in La Ferté where you will experience local entertainment. You will have the opportunity to return your hosts’ hospitality in 2021 if you wish. The cost of your visit will be around £225.

For more information about the visit, look on the Wells Twinning web site at wellstowntwinning.co.uk or contact Jill Francis, Group President, on jillywilly2305@gmail.com or phone 01328 853291. Come and enjoy yourselves in France. Barry Howes

The French had organised visits to local places of interest, including the Nantes to Brest Canal, a Tropical Gardens attraction and the historic town of Redon. As always, the hospitality and meals were legendary, and the weather stayed sunny.

Arrangements are now being made for the return visit next summer by the French, probably in July. New members are always welcome, whether or not you speak French. For further details please contact our website sheringham-muzillac.co.uk

Weybourne WI Visit King’s Lynn

It was a bright autumn day on Thursday, 10th October, when a group of members and friends from Weybourne WI travelled by coach to spend the day at King’s Lynn.

Thanks from Norfolk Knitters and Stitchers

After a refreshment break on arrival, we divided into two groups for a guided tour around the town. One group took the maritime trail which featured the historic Hanseatic buildings, while the other concentrated on the ‘darker side’ of the town and included the exorcist’s house and information about hangings and witch hunts.

A big thank you to everyone who has donated yarn, material, patterns and needles to Sheringham and Cromer Public Libraries to be used by Norfolk Knitters and Stitchers.

We use the yarn and material to make items for local charities including Kelling Hospital. Age UK, local residential and care homes, N and N Hospital, the Salvation Army, animal charities and the homeless as well as supporting people in need further afield.

Items we cannot use are sold on EBay to raise money for the proposed Chemo Ward at Cromer Hospital. So far we have given them £6000 with another £2000 in the pipeline. Other items are passed on to local charity shops and the Big C at Wymondham.

After the tours ended we chose various locations to eat lunch, before spending some time browsing in the shops and exploring the town further.

Thank you also to the staff at the both libraries for taking in donations and passing them on to us. Kate Davis, Norfolk Knitters and Stitchers

Everyone agreed it had been an enjoyable outing.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

A recent departure from our pens was Gracie, another cat very popular with everyone who has been in contact with her. To see Gracie now, as opposed to when she joined us is remarkable. Initially, we thought she was a very old cat as she was very thin and in terrible condition. With lots of loving care her health and condition improved and she did leave for a new home which unfortunately proved unsuitable as she intimidated the resident old dog. We believe she was probably trying to be friendly but obviously the dog did not. However, she has now settled in a new home as the only pet and is enjoying the love and care she is receiving from her new family, who are delighted with her. This tiny little cat did not have a good life before joining us but is now reaping the much-deserved benefits of a very loving home.

Being confined in a cat pen is not the normal environment for a cat and although some cats will settle quite happily, especially if they have arrived from a stressful situation, others will find it challenging and will not be seen at their best. It is therefore important to remember that the cat may behave differently when it goes to its new home and does need time to adapt to its new surroundings. We usually advise that the cat is initially confined to one room and gradually introduced to other rooms as its confidence improves. In the first few weeks it is also important to ensure that, until the cat is properly settled, all windows should be kept closed and the cat’s whereabouts monitored before opening doors. Because cats can be unpredictable, we do on occasion rehome a cat that will decide it has” landed on its paws” on leaving its carrier and will explore the whole of its new home and settle down, once its inspection is complete, on a nice comfy chair or settee. Whether they settle straight away, or need time to do so, it is important to let the cat do it at its own pace rather than try to force the issue.

both new owner and the cat. The cat will often be quite timid and hide because it is new to the area and there are no familiar smells to help him. The more confident cats have generally been reunited quite quickly although there have been instances where we have had to lend a cat trap to help get the less confident ones back with their new family.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This Phoebe, lovely friendly girl, number is for vouchers only 8 years old and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham

Hedgehog Haven

I have hedgehogs come in from many different locations but I was rather surprised when I received a call from Corks Funeral Directors! They had found a small hedgehog in the back garden. This little fellow only weighs 100grms and would not have survived much longer outside. What else could I call him but Corky!

Over the years several cats have escaped through a window or door soon after joining their new family and this has resulted in a worrying time for

The Importance of Fraud and Scam Awareness

With the winter months drawing near it can be a difficult time for our more vulnerable loved ones and can unfortunately make them targets to fraudulent individuals. That is why Home Instead Senior Care Norwich and Clapham and Collinge solicitors recently teamed up to offer a free Scam Prevention Workshop for older people, family members, carers and people throughout the community.

The workshop held on the 23rd September offered advice and guidance in supporting your loved ones to help them feel safe and secure in their own home. As the home is no longer only targeted by doorstep sales-people and cold callers but also nuisance calls, texts and unwanted post it is important that we take steps to prevent this invasion of privacy and security.

Citizens Advice research shows that almost three-quarters (72%) of people surveyed had been targeted by scammers over a two year period. Over a third, had been targeted five or more times. Home Instead Senior Care and the team at Clapham and Collinge Solicitors have identified some ways your loved ones may be targeted and offer suggestions of preventative measure.

on your legitimate communication. • Similarly if you receive an Email from a company/provider asking for your bank details do not follow their instructions. Contact the company/provider directly or if you have an account on their website sign in and check for any new messages.

If you receive any of the above phishing attempts make sure you report them to the organisation the individual is claiming to be from, they will confirm whether it is genuine or fake correspondence.

unwanted Calls and texts Unfortunately sales calls are a product of our society and an unwanted nuisance. Our information may not be as secure as we would like it to be and we have all had calls asking if you had recently been in a road traffic accident.

A scammer may pretend be to calling from your bank, service provider or another trusted company with the intent to access your information or bank accounts. It is important to not give out any personal details and if you are not expecting the call – hang up.

Clapham and Collinge are proud to provide the local community with an extensive range of private client services across North Norfolk.

if you would like to enquire about our private client services please contact us on 01263 823398, email enquiries@clapham-collinge.co.uk or visit www.clapham-collinge.co.uk

Doorstep Salespeople and Cold Callers Door to door sales techniques can often include a very pushy and intimidating pitch with the aim of selling a service or product to an individual that may not necessarily require that service/product.

As we all know these pushy pitches are easier to avoid when you are not in a face to face scenario, we would suggest that you or your loved one take care in answering the door unless they have previously arranged a visit.

online scams The anonymity of the internet presents opportunity for would-be scammers without the risk of being identified. You may be approached through various different methods of direct communication such as Email or social media or indirect methods such as fraudulent websites, viruses and fake dating sites.

You can take the following preventative measures to protect yourself and your loved ones from these common scams.

• When entering payment details always check the web address starts with a secure extension of 'HTTPS' for example 'https://example.com/' • Make sure you or your loved one have up to date Anti-Virus software. • If you receive a suspicious Email from an individual claiming to be your gas, energy or another supplier do not click any links or download any attachments contained within the email. Search for the provider's website yourself and make an enquiry or call the number provided

FIREWORK FEARS!

We all know how stressful the firework season can be for our pets so here at Toll Barn Vets we have a few helpful tips to help keep pets as calm as possible. Animals have very sensitive hearing and loud bangs can be painful whilst the flashing lights can be scary.

fireworks are let off.

Many pets go missing at this time of year when they get scared by fireworks so make sure all pets are easily identified with a collar and tag or microchip (with up to date contact details) so that they can be reunited with you if they get scared and manage to run off.

Always keep dogs and cats indoors during fireworks and make sure dogs are walked earlier in the day to avoid being out when

It can help to build your pet a safe den and keep windows, doors and curtains closed to minimise noise as much as possible. Some pets will find it comforting to have an alternative noise so keeping the radio or television on can help to reduce awareness of the sound of fireworks. Pets will often look to you for reassurance during stressful situations so try to act as normally as possible and make sure not to tell pets off if they are behaving in a stressed manner during fireworks. It is also important to reward calm and relaxed behaviour with cuddles and treats!

There are also several medicines and techniques which can be used to reduce anxiety around firework season.

&DOO RXU )5(( -GD\ D ZHHN $GYLFH /LQH

Pheromone-based and natural calming products come in several varieties including plug-in diffusers, tablets, liquids, collars and sprays. These products can help pets feel more relaxed and calm and should ideally

be started at least 48 hours (preferably longer) before fireworks are due to start. Noise phobia CDs are also available and are designed to gradually reduce sensitivity to loud sounds over a long period of time in the run up to Firework Night.

It’s also important to remember small mammals such as rabbits and guinea pigs, as well as birds during this stressful season. These pets can also get easily scared and if possible these pets should be moved into a quiet room or shed. If this is not possible cages should be covered to reduce the sound of the fireworks and turned to face a wall so the firework lights are less visible. It is essential to ensure enough ventilation still remains underneath the cover. Make sure pets have enough bedding to burrow and hide in should they feel stressed.

As November creeps up its time to start thinking about Firework season and what we can do to help our pets.

Country’s biggest New Year’s Day Firework display celebrates 21 years All eyes will be on the skies above Cromer Pier on 1 January 2020 as the traditional New Year’s Day Firework display celebrates its 21st anniversary.

The event, which started as a one-off display for the new millennium in 2000, was funded by Cromer Town Council and was located on The Meadow - it was a success in terms of local support, and it raised a few hundred pounds for charity.

Former Firework Committee Chairman Jim Bond said “This seemed to be an event that we could do every year, and the following year it attracted a larger crowd. After a few years, the display was moved onto the pier, thanks to North Norfolk District Council's support. It has gone on to attract larger and larger crowds, and consequently an increase in donations which helps pay for the following year's display and grants to local charities."

Since 2000 the event has given out grants totalling over £60,000 to local charities and good causes. Organisers hope as many people as possible will again come to Cromer for the day to see more than 3,000 firework shots light up the skies over the North Sea.

Firework Committee Chairman Pat West said “As always, the advice is please arrive early and support the local businesses in town who do support the Fireworks committee. There are several exciting new sequences within the main display which will be new to Cromer this year and we are very excited to show these to everyone. As last year, there will be a torchlight parade from Cromer church before the display. We have a new route and for those who have purchased official merchandise there is a designated area with a grandstand view of the firework display.

The annual display attracts more than 10,000 people into Cromer on New Year’s Day with many spending the day in the town for a breath of fresh air and something to eat and drink before the display is fired from Cromer Pier at 5pm.

Will Evans, Project Manager at Titanium Fireworks, said: “Titanium Fireworks are delighted to be firing again off Cromer pier on New Year’s Day 2020. This show is now a firm highlight in our calendar and the crowds it draws, and money it raises for the community, make it something special for us to play our

part in. A local youngster will be leading the countdown as a thank you for the winning drawing she sent to the display organisers after the 2019 event and we will then start the main show and fill the skies above Cromer with an array of effects to wow the crowds and start the year with a bang. As always we would like to encourage those who can, to donate to New Year’s Day Fireworks 2019 the collectors around R.Birnie (Winner 2019 photography competition sponsored by Hughes) the town so that this – 4.30pm. north norfolk District Council recently hosted a fun-filled civic reception in the spectacular location of Cley Visitor Centre.

The fund-raising event was a huge success raising £2245 for the Chairman’s chosen charity of the year – Norfolk Wildlife Trust. During the evening an auction was held with some unusual lots, such as unique experiences including a ride in a Tiger Moth at Langham Airfield and pieces of art.

Cllr Clive Stockton, North Norfolk District Council’s Chairman, said “I am absolutely overjoyed that the evening was informal, relaxed, with some 70 persons present and the auction itself raised such an exceptional amount.

The auction was carried out free of charge and therefore the total raised has been donated to my chosen charity. This will contribute to two strands of work being carried out by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust – the “Children and Nature” project and heritage grazing programme.

The auction was only possible because of the most generous support of the 22 donors who gave such fantastic lots and I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to them and to the auction house who facilitated the event. ”

The reception marks the commencement of a series of school and community events including tree-planting sessions taking place across the district with the aim of raising funds for Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s ‘Sure Start’ centres which focus on educating children and encouraging them to get in touch with nature.

Sure Start centres are part of Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s Children and Nature initiative. It creates wildlife-friendly areas outdoors where children can get involved with nature through wild walks and educational sessions.

Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club

On Tuesday 1 October, after a superb lunch, Sue and Guy Morton gave a fascinating talk called ‘Bell Ringing in Norfolk’.

Call Steve on 01263 511626 www.cromergaragedoors.co.uk

Stuart’s

Sue explained that bell ringing was an English tradition. At St Peter Mancroft in Norwich in 1731, the Bloody Peal (so-called because bell ringers had blood on their hands at the end) was rung by 8 people over 8 hours and 15 minutes. This was a record for 151 years!

Sue and Guy met through bell ringing and decided to pursue their mutual interest at All Saints Church, Upper Sheringham. A bell hanger’s report on the six bells, which had been cast in 1841, stated that they were in a bad condition. The parochial church council asked Sue to co-ordinate a major fundraising project to re-hang the derelict bells to enable traditional English full-circle bell ringing to take place again (the bells have not been rung in this way since 1935).

TAXI & TRAVEL SHERINGHAM

01263 824444

A chiming mechanism is also to be installed to ensure the bells can be sounded even when there are no experienced bell ringers available. So far £73,000 has been raised, another £12,000 is needed.

Sue and Guy demonstrated four-in-hand ringing, both having two handbells in each hand, their performance attracting plentiful applause. The talk ended with a lively questions and answers session and afterwards 6 members tried their hand at bell ringing.

Garden Therapy at Canaan Christian Centre

The Canaan Christian Centre situated at 21 Holt road, Sheringham is offering help to anyone who would like some garden therapy. We are told that something in our DNA responds to nature but not everyone has a garden or a space to try out gardening. The Canaan Centre has a large garden and lots of varied work volunteers could get involved in. I personally know it alleviates my stress level and the satisfaction that results from an hour or two in the open air is very valuable, so come

along and try. I knew very little about gardening but watching Monty Donn and gardening programmes has resulted in my Cromer garden bursting with flowers. We hope to have a gardening expert with us too who can advise us. Sessions will be on Friday mornings from 10am - 12noon with a break for coffee. Free. Evelyn Smith Director

Macmillan Coffee Morning and Walk

Sporting Centre of Excellence

Olympian Gail Emms encourages young people to take up sport

Macmillan Cancer Support North Norfolk Committee, in conjunction with SiS, recently held their annual Coffee Morning and Walk at St Peters Church Hall Sheringham.

North Norfolk District Council launched Year Four of its Sporting Centre of Excellence initiative, hosting an evening of speakers including Badminton Olympic medallist Gail Emms at Gresham’s School, Holt.

Fifty three walkers took part, with Kathy Lee and Linda Alder raising much appreciated additional money from sponsors. The whole event was a tremendous success breaking all records and raising a fantastic total of £1265.95.

This year the event was supported by Ro Curtis with the New Sheringham Singers who entertained the walkers and visitors to the coffee morning with some superb singing. Thank you to everyone who contributed in so many ways, and this wonderful community for being so generous!

The aim of the initiative is to encourage children with a talent for sport to get involved and to take advantage of specialist coaching provided and the excellent facilities at Gresham’s School.

Now entering its fourth year, the sessions have produced many sporting achievers, including three winners at the County Championships and 11 children selected for the Norfolk Schools Athletics Association, amongst many others.

Olympian Gail Emms with Cllr Clive Stockton, Chairman of North Norfolk District Council

Emms gave a moving speech and later said of the event “I was so thrilled to be able to speak to these children and their families about the joys of getting involved in sport. I truly hope to encourage and inspire young people to take advantage of the amazing opportunities on offer here which I could have only dreamed of when I was starting out. Not only is it important to be physically active for our health, but it’s exciting that those with real talent can progress and succeed if they want to.”

Marc Bradford, whose daughter is currently taking part in the programme, said “My daughter has been attending the endurance running training due to an invitation after her achievements over the last year in numerous school and district competitions. We found the all the speakers entertaining, interesting, inspirational and relatable and left the evening with a broad smile and thinking about how lucky we are to have the chance to receive such top level training.

St Peters Church PCC were very kind in donating the use of the hall to Macmillan. The money raised is ring fenced by Macmillan Cancer Support to help local people in North Norfolk with cancer and their families. Thank you everyone!

Do you enjoy playing badminton?

A massive thank you from both of us, to all of you who have been involved in setting up this training program and for hosting such an insightful evening”.

Did you know that there this a badminton club in Holt?

The club meets every Wednesday in the Sports hall at Greshams School from 7pm to 9pm.

We are a friendly group of intermediate players (male and female) and play for fitness and fun, and are looking for new members to join us. First session is free, so why not pop along or call Mel or Karen for more info on 07776 487117/07884 584066.
