Sowing the seeds of success Sheringham High School has been presented with the ‘Best Yield Cup’ after entering the Norfolk Schools Solana Potato Competition for the first time.

During a school assembly for termly achievements, student Ryan Pemberton was surprised and delighted to be presented with the cup by Craig Stephens, managing director of Solana UK, one of the UK’s leading seed and agri-research companies.

Several new polling stations to be used by the Council

The UK shall be voting in a General Election on Thursday, 12 December 2019 with Polling Stations being open between 7am and 10pm across our district.

The newly appointed Patch CoOrdinator, Michelle Angus, said ‘This is a great start to the school year and I am looking forward to entering next year’s competition. We have 3 different year groups from Sheringham High School who are studying Horticulture on The Patch. All students have shown a keen interest in the organic growing of fruit and vegetables but it is especially gratifying when we get awards from outside agencies.’

North Norfolk District Council has had to implement several changes to Polling Stations due to usual buildings being unavailable at such short notice. We very much appreciate the work that has gone into making our Polling Stations available for this election including the movement or cancellation of pre-existing bookings which had been in place.

Furthermore, there have been two further changes in polling arrangements:• Following a request from Matlaske Parish Council we have changed the Polling Station arrangements for electors in Matlaske from Little Barningham Village Hall to Baconsthorpe Village Hall, School Lane, Baconsthorpe, NR25 6LJ. • Due to the unavailability of Sustead Village Hall we have changed the Polling Station arrangements for electors in Sustead which also includes electors from Bessingham and Metton so that they will now vote at a Portacabin sited at Hanworth Village Hall, The Common, Hanworth, NR11 7HP.

Residents who wish to vote and are not already on the Electoral Register will have to register by 11.59pm on Tuesday, 26 November 2019. If you are not registered you will not be able to vote at this Election.

If you wish to apply for an Absent Vote at this election the deadline for the receipt of postal vote applications are: 5pm on Tuesday, 26 November 2019 with the deadline for Proxy Vote applications being; 5pm on Wednesday, 4 December 2019.

Postal Vote packs will be dispatched on Friday, 22 November to those who have permanent postal voting arrangements and those who have applied for a postal vote before 6 November. A second dispatch will be made on Tuesday, 3 December to those who apply for a postal vote between Wednesday, 6 November and 5pm on Tuesday, 26 November.

Sheringham Stroke Support Group

Sheringham Stroke Support group met on Wednesday 30 October at Anchor Close Sheringham for a most interesting illustrated picture show and talk by Brian Hedge.

It was Brian’s second show about Sheringham, including many unseen pictures of local fishermen, private and RNLI lifeboats and Olive Edis, the British photographer who spent her life between London and Sheringham and had a studio in South Street, Sheringham.

We saw a picture of Olive with her war chauffeur in a large car and driving her own small car.

There were also photos of Sheringham Railway being built plus 28 staff who worked there, the inside of Sheringham's first hotel on the corner of Weybourne and Holt Road and pictures of the High Street and a funeral procession on foot which had to ask the Salvation Army Band to move so they could pass. Sorry I can't remember all the names of Shannocks mentioned but I can recommend this latest contribution by Brian to groups who like Sheringham history.

Our previous two meetings were based on

The first meeting gave us an opportunity to tell stories, jokes, poetry and funny stories.

It started with our dear Marion Sharp, who has regained her speech and mobility after having several strokes. She told us her story about becoming an ordained Methodist Minister.

She ended each part of her journey with ‘well I never’. Towards the end of this journey she went into Norwich City Football Club and was welcomed into the Club by David Stringer and Bryan Hamilton and spent time in the Club talking to anyone who would like to talk.

On 16 October we had our Music and Movement class with Sally King stretching parts of our bodies that hadn't stretched since our September meeting! It’s a good job we sit down for these meetings. Our usual cuppa and biscuits revive us to go home around 3.45pm after receiving our raffle prize.

Morley Club Christmas Coffee Morning

The Morley Club Bowls Section. 48, Cromer Road, Sheringham will be having their Christmas Coffee morning on Saturday 7 December from 10.30am to 12.30pm.

Christmas Hallelujah is the name of Marilyn Baker’s latest CD and also the concert she is performing at the Canaan Christian Centre 21 Holt Road, Sheringham at 3pm on Saturday 14 December.

As well as the usual tombola, raffle and book stalls, the profit from which goes to maintaining the bowling green, there will be a charity stall of bric-a-brac and new items, the money from which will be donated to a local cancer project (any gifts or donations welcome).

Cromer Hospital receives £1m from Norfolk farmer’s legacy

The generosity of a Norfolk farmer is set to improve health services in North Norfolk after Cromer Hospital received one of its biggest ever donations.

The family of Douglas de Bootman have presented a cheque of more than £1m to the N&N Hospitals Charity after the retired farmer left the proceeds of his estate to Cromer Hospital in his will.

Mr de Bootman spent his life farming at Pentney, near Swaffham, before retiring and buying Church Farm in Thursford with his wife Janet.

said her uncle liked helping others and Mr de Bootman revealed to her a week before his death that he was leaving his legacy to benefit Cromer Hospital.

“He was very active in his retirement up until three or four weeks before he died. He had quite a lot of land and used to get up early in the mornings and spent his time taking care of the grounds: cutting the grass, pruning the trees, chopping wood, etc. He was very skilled at carpentry, welding, and agricultural engineering.

After Janet died of cancer in 2010, Mr de Bootman continued to live in Thursford and spent much of his time looking after the grounds of his farm and discovered his love of painting.

The 88-year-old died in March 2018 following a short illness.

He loved being outside with his Labrador and in his retirement took up painting, which it seems he had a natural skill.”

“He was such a quiet, sensitive gentleman.

He and Janet enjoyed a few holidays in Scotland. My uncle liked a quiet life, in Thursford he had a few elderly neighbours who he liked to help and vice versa.

“We are happy that the money is going to the new cancer unit at Cromer Hospital as cancer affects so many people in many ways.”

The sale of Mr de Bootman’s estate has resulted in Cromer Hospital receiving £1,078,519.30

The Trust is currently working with Macmillan Cancer Support to create a state-of-the-art cancer care and support centre, which will increase chemotherapy and treatment space at Cromer Hospital.

Louise Cook, Head of Fundraising for the N&N Hospitals Charity, said: “We are overwhelmed by this incredibly generous donation, which will make a significant difference to thousands of patients in North Norfolk.

“Mr de Bootman’s legacy will undoubtedly help improve the facilities and services at the hospital and will be felt by patients, staff and visitors for many years to come.”

Do you want to help maintain your local Common?

A number of people have expressed an interest in helping to maintain and restore habitats on Beeston Common and back in the 1980s the Beeston Common Management Group (BCMG) was formed to enable people to do this. In recent years there has been more reliance on contractors to carry out the bulk of the work although BCMG has looked after more sensitive areas and mowed pathways.

If you are interested in maybe reforming the BCMG or just coming along on a casual basis then a number of task days have been arranged.

From previous enquires it seems people cannot all make the same day so two alternatives have been given for December. If these are not suitable and you want to help then please email with your preferred day and should enough people pick another day then arrangements could be made. Task times are expected to be 9.30am to 12.30pm but can be flexible although generally meeting prior to the tasks will be at 9.30am by the main pond.

The work for the most part will take place in

the autumn/winter period (October to March) and will mainly focus on the management of the small wildflower areas in the south of the Common, scrub and path clearance (cutting back trees and branches) to maintain the open character of the Common. The following dates cover December and work will take place unless it is bad weather (rain/snow etc). Upper Sheringham Bells have been tuned!

We are still waiting for the date when the bells from All Saints Church in Upper Sheringham will be making their journey back from the bell works in Dorset to North Norfolk ready to be returned to the tower to be fitted in the new frame before they will once more ring out over the village. We had hoped this would be before Christmas, but this is now looking unlikely – it should be early in the New Year – watch this space!

Graham Allen Award Winners 2019 new Visitor Centre on iconic north norfolk estate wins annual Design award

The Lookout, on Holkham Estate, has been presented with North Norfolk District Council’s Graham Allen Award, an esteemed award given each year to the project considered to have made the most significant contribution to the built environment within the district.

The new visitor centre forms a striking circular arrival to the Holkham National Nature Reserve. The building comprises of a small café, orientation exhibition and conveniences for visitors through its distinctive timber cladded finishes and open, inviting layout.

With the nature reserve attracting approximately 800,000 visitors per year, this stunning new gateway promises to offer a unique visitor experience for years to come.

James Bracey, General Manager at Holkham Estate, said “We feel extremely honoured to be recognised for this award.

The construction of the Lookout has created a much needed visitor facility at Lady Anne’s Drive, Holkham. This iconic building was designed to sit subtly within the landscape, whilst creating a strong link between the visitor and the natural environment. The building intentionally provides the simplest of facilities of respite, refuge and interpretation.

This project demonstrates Holkham’s commitment to the natural and built environment.”

The award has been running for the last 38 years to celebrate the best practice in design and conservation in North Norfolk. The results of the awards were announced yesterday, November 7, at a ceremony at North Norfolk District Council’s offices in Cromer.

Phillip Rowson, North Norfolk District Council’s Head of Planning, said “The Lookout is a fantastic new focal point for visitors exploring the nature reserve and will encourage understanding of its sensitive habitats and wildlife. The centre offers incredible views of the surrounding landscape and it’s the relationship with its setting which makes it so special.

“The quality of this year’s entries and subsequent shortlist for judging was exceptionally high, so this year’s winners can be incredibly proud of their achievement.”

The Lookout was not the only winner on the day. The prize for Highly Commended went to The Shambles Café. The project saw the repair and conversion of a derelict Grade II Listed building in the heart of North Walsham.

Fakenham also enjoyed the spotlight when The Mews on Barons Hall Lane won the Commended prize. The project saw the creation of 10 high quality new homes formed in a contemporary terrace.

The People’s Choice Award, voted for members of the public at North Norfolk District Council’s Greenbuild event, went to the refurbishment of Little Regents Hall in Sheringham. The historic community hall has been cleverly restored into a Bed and Breakfast.

Previous winners of the have included the refurbishment of the Gunton Arms on the edge of Thorpe Market and Hootz House at Pensthorpe Natural Park and last year’s overall winner; Church Barn in East Ruston.

Little Lucky was found on 9 November wandering down Hall Lane in North Walsham the middle of the day. She could so easily have been run over. At 170 gms she was very cold and had to be gently warmed before being offered food. She was very poorly but is doing ok at the moment.

Sheringham Town Council News …

sheringham and beeston war Memorial has undergone a deep clean in preparation for ww1 remembrance service.

Sheringham Town Council made it a focus to enhance the War Memorial, in anticipation for WWII commemoration events taking place in 2020, and directed the Administration team to seek quotations from suitable specialist companies. The War Memorial monument which was unveiled and dedicated in 1921, is Grade II listed, as such requires particular care and attention to preserve. The war memorial is dedicated to those from Sheringham and Beeston Regis who died in service during both the First and Second World Wars.

The Administration team contacted Variblast (based in Framlingham Pigot), after seeing the work they undertook on other War Memorials in Norfolk as part of their ‘give back’ competition. The competition was launched by Variblast in 2018 to give back to Norfolk Community and

to Honor the service and sacrifice of all those who gave so much but asked for so little.

After receiving notification from Variblast offering their services, Sheringham Town Mayor, Madeleine Ashcroft, commented that the Council were delighted to have been selected by Variblast for their 2019 War Memorial Clean Competition.

Cleaning was undertaken on Saturday 2 November, with the team from Variblast donating their time for free for the project, and missing the Rugby World Cup final in the process. Warren Farrow, Director for Variblast commented that “I would like to thank the two members of my staff ‘Ben Boydell’ and ‘Scott Fairchild’, to whom carried out the works unpaid in the name of charity.”

Deputy Mayor Liz Withington, who was present as the clean was being undertaken, thanked the team from Variblast for an excellent job that will be much appreciated by the Town and the community who are rightly proud of the people the memorial represents and remembers.

It was fitting that Variblast completed this work as just as the Town Council is working with the District Council to improve the War Memorial Gardens to raise people’s awareness of the importance of remembering the sacrifice of our previous generations.

Age Concern North Norfolk held an event to celebrate ‘The Older Peoples Day’ and the re-location of its Pop-in group. The group is held at the Community Centre in Cromer, every Friday from 10am to 12 noon.

Mental Health Awareness

The growing movement of Mental Health awareness has captivated the UK with employers and HR professionals championing the importance of having a good work life balance. Extra working hours, low wages and a need to increase earning capacity means that the balance of work and life can fall out of sync. As a result, the mental health of those employees is put in jeopardy.

People with unhealthy work life balances may feel unhappy about being at and devoting time to work. If your employees/colleagues are showing signs of lack of motivation at work, distracted behaviour or seem unhappy at work, these may be signs that they need some help.

Similarly, those who seem to worry about work at home, those who are not developing personally outside of work or seem to be neglecting other aspects of their lives in favour of work, could be struggling with an unhealthy work life balance.

Head of Employment Law Nicola Strefford explains "Nurturing employees is the best way to ensure you are getting the best out of your workforce. Incorrect work life balance can affect productivity, absence figures and turnover for businesses so it's extremely important that employees are encouraged to have a correct work life balance and feel taken care of. We always advise clients to deal with issues

On Tuesday 5 November, after a tasty lunch, Steve Piotrowski gave an enthralling talk about the award-winning Suffolk Community Barn Owl Project.

The project was founded by Steve in 2005 as part of the response to the national decline in barn owl numbers (there were 12,000 pairs in 1932 but only 3,750 in 1982). He explained that the decrease was a result of a lack of feeding and nesting opportunities brought about by loss of habitat. The project has installed more than two thousand nest boxes, the majority of which are made by SOLD, a Lowestoft-based charity. These nest boxes have enabled the barn owl to recover and there has been a ten-fold rise in population since the late 1980s.

Steve stated that the barn owl is one of the most dedicated parents in the bird world. The male is much smaller than the female and is excluded from the nest once the eggs hatch, although he continues to feed his young. Barn owls are silent hunters, relying on their incredibly sensitive hearing to locate their prey. Their main target is the short-tailed vole, which, fortunately for the owl, is widespread in the UK and is very productive, breeding like mice. A surprising fact Steve revealed is that there is no waterproofing on the owl’s plumage, which is why drowning is the second biggest killer, after road accidents, of barn owls.

A busy afternoon for Weybourne WI It was a busy afternoon for Weybourne WI on Wednesday, 6 November.

The meeting began with an informative talk by Caroline Jarrold, who is a 7th generation member of the family who founded the Jarrold company, which will celebrate its 250th anniversary in 2020. Caroline is based at St James Mill in Norwich and holds the posts of Community Affairs Adviser and Secretary of the John Jarrold Trust.

On behalf of the 36 members and 2 guests present, our Chairman, Dave Williams, thanked Steve for his fascinating talk.

We shall next meet at the Links Hotel in West Runton on Tuesday 3 December for our Christmas Lunch and a talk by Simon Partridge about the history and traditions of Christmas. Caroline told us about the history of the company, from when it was started

by John Jarrold in 1770, up until the present day. Over the years a succession of family members have taken the company from strength to strength and it continues to develop and expand.

Caroline’s talk was accompanied by numerous slides, which illustrated the changes that have taken place.

In the 1980s and 90s there was massive investment in printing and publishing and various magazines, books, catalogues, etc., were all produced by Jarrold. However, the majority shareholding of the printing business was sold in the early 2000s and investment was made in other areas including retail, training, security, cleaning services and property development.

The John Jarrold Trust is a charity which benefits people in Norfolk and distributes around £80,000 per year.

In 2017, the Jarrold Department Store began a new initiative to support three charities including Each, The Big C and the Prince’s Trust.

A vote of thanks was given by Maggie Parker.

The AGM then took place and various reports were presented and accepted, before elections were held. The Committee members and President (Celia Howe) were all unanimously re-elected. Gwyneth Sibilia thanked the Committee for their hard work throughout the past year.

The afternoon concluded with tea and homemade biscuits.

And after that? Well, the indefatigable Christine Adams decided to do strenuous and dirty jobs on the Poppy Line and this was the subject of her talk to Holt and District Probus Club in early November.

Christine’s first job on the North Norfolk Railway was as a cleaner – and steam locomotives are very dirty things!

She went on to be a fireman – or we should say firewoman or fireperson. She learned to fill the firebox with wood and to light the fire at the crack of dawn using a piece of wood wrapped in a length of rag dipped in paraffin. She “invented” the use of a kitchen blow torch to keep a flame going to light the rag with! And of course she kept the fire going with shovel after shovel of coal.

All of this was not without its problems. One of the jobs that has to be done the morning after a locomotive has been running is to get inside the firebox and clean out the accumulated clinker. Firebox doors are not on the whole designed for women to squeeze through! But Christine said on a cold winter morning, the retained warmth of the firebox can be surprisingly welcome!

After that, Christine became a driver and drove Poppy Line locos up and down the line between Sheringham and Holt. She said she had a special liking for the late David Shepherd’s engine ‘Black Prince’.

The Club were also shown a video of Christine’s trip to drive Polish engines, and numerous still photos of the lady in action!

For tart Case 200g plain flour 100g cold butter 2 tbsp. cold water

Pre heat oven to 200c, rub butter into flour, then add water, slowly mixing until combined well. Let sit for 20 mins. Roll out to 1/2cm thick and mould into a tart case. Bake in oven until golden brown.

Heat cream and zest until simmering, add chocolate and stir until completely melted.

Add orange juice, vanilla and liqueur and stir then add beaten egg and stir in thoroughly.

Let cool for ten mins then pour into tart cases and chill for 2 hours. For orange pre heat oven to 180c, coat orange in sugar and place on lined baking

Holt Country Park Calendar available to buy Ideal stocking filler!

North Norfolk District Council is delighted to announce that its Holt Country Park calendar featuring visitors’ winning images is now on sale, following the year-long competition. The calendar consists of photos taken by visitors to the Green Flag award-winning park over the last year and each month features a winning photographer’s image together with other selected images that show off the beauty of the Park and how people enjoy it throughout the seasons.

You can now purchase the calendar for just £5 from the park itself, or can be collected at the park after an online purchase on the Council’s website. For those who would like to get their copy delivered, this can also be done online after a small postage fee of £1.50. The calendar would make a fantastic Christmas present for those with a love of the great outdoors.

Each year hundreds of artists take part in the scheme, inviting the public into their studios to reveal how and where they work.

The event annually attracts thousands of

visitors and in 2019 more than 31,000 people flocked to studios across Norfolk.

Norfolk Open Norfolk Open Studios Sculptor Andy Jarrett Studios enables artists to promote and sell their work directly to visitors who can see artwork as it happens in the studio.

During Norfolk Open Studios 2019, 430 artists participated across 250 venues along with 19 Norfolk schools. Throughout the county artists came together to create 16 Art Trails, allowing visitors to enjoy several studios in one day. Art demonstrations, private views, workshops and talks also make up this key event.

Artists will also receive an online profile on the Norfolk Open Studios website, showing a selection of their work, contact details and links to their website and social media channels – this profile remains published for up to one year.

Artists will also have access to marketing materials such as posters and postcards to publicise their involvement. They will have the opportunity to exhibit a piece of artwork at the Open Studios Central Taster Exhibition at The Forum in Norwich in the run up to the scheme. Applications opened on Friday 8 November and close on Friday 13 December 2019.
